If you, like many, have been hibernating through Winter and the first part of Spring, May may be the perfect time to reengage with the world. In Tennessee, the weather tends to be neither too hot nor too cold, and the month is packed with holidays and celebrations that honor people, history, and nature. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s celebrated: Mother’s Day (Second Sunday in May, U.S. and many other countries): A day to honor mothers and maternal figures with gifts, calls, cards, and appreciation.

Memorial Day (Last Monday in May, U.S.): A solemn day to remember and honor military personnel who died in service. It’s also the unofficial start of summer.

May Day (May 1st): Globally, it’s known as International Workers’ Day, celebrating labor movements and workers’ rights.

In some cultures, May Day is also a spring festival with flowers, dancing, and traditions like the Maypole.

Cinco de Mayo (May 5th): Celebrated more in the U.S. than in Mexico, it commemorates the Mexican victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 and has become a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (U.S.): Celebrated all through May to recognize the contributions and influence of AAPI individuals in U.S. history, culture, and society.

Mental Health Awareness Month: A time to raise awareness, fight stigma, and promote mental well-being.

Teacher Appreciation Week/Day: Usually in the first full week of May in the U.S., it’s a chance to thank educators for their hard work and dedication.

These are just some of the highlights. There are many other celebrations that take place this month, and Clarksville itself will be busy all month with lots of cool events and things to do.

So, check out the socials, see what’s up, and join in the fun. Maybe we’ll get to see a picture of you in the June magazine.

Wandering Down Nashville’s Spice Road - Part 1 Partaking of the Cuisine

en minutes from Downtown Nashville, with the skyline looming above, lies a treasure trove of international stores and restaurants, centrally located on or just off Nolensville Pike. Although most know it because of its entrance to the Nashville Zoo, many don’t take the time to wander parts north and south, which I have dubbed “Nashville’s Spice Road”.

It has become a favorite haunt of mine, and although I visit several times a year, I know that I’ve barely scratched the surface of all the ethnic varieties of places to visit. Keeping that in mind, I’ll share with you some of my food favorites and nationally renowned places to sample a delicious and authentic meal:

fare of Alexander the Great. It is the comfort food of Uzbek meals and is cooked in a large cauldron called a kazan, similar to paella in Spain. It is one of my favorites.

You’ll also find homemade hummus, suzma (similar to a feta dip), and ikra, a vegetarian dip. Chechevitsa, a lentil soup made with lentils imported from Russia, is a favorite along with vinegret, a beetroot, potato, and onion salad. You can also find kimchi, meat kebabs, fresh grilled fish, and baklava here.

Osh 216 Thompson Lane Uzbekistan Cuisine is served here. Before my first visit, I could not begin to tell you what the cuisine was or where the country was located. After perusing the menu I saw some familiar items that I identified as Korean, Middle Eastern, Russian, and many I could not place.

My server explained to me that the country lies at the beginning of the famous Silk Road and many cultures exist peacefully together, including Koreans, Asians, Russians, and Middle Easterners who came in to trade and ended up as permanent residents. Osh was recognized at #9 of the top 100 restaurants on YELP for 2022 and continues its high rankings today.

The restaurant is named for its signature or national dish, osh or plov, which is an ancient Persian dish that includes meat, spices, carrots, and onions and was the

for best Thai food and Takeout. In 2011 Degthai was Nashville’s first Thai food truck serving street food options, which is still the mainstay of its menu today.

In November of 2020 the restaurant went to brick-andmortar and the word spread.

With its Bangkok influence and its purposely limited menu of 8-10 entrees , the dishes are truly Thai authentic with no watering down of ingredients or heat.

Green and red curries are flavorful with abundant vegetables and herbs. Stir-fry Pad Kra Pao with fresh basil and seasoned pork is the most ordered item, along with Pad Thai.

Add sarma (stuffed grape leaves) and a hot pastry roll such as borek stuffed with potato, cheese, spinach, or feta, or a boregi, a feta and parsley fried filo dough roll.

Then split one of the meat specialties, especially lamb if you can save room. Do try a dessert such as a baklava or the katmer, filo dough filled with pistachios, sugar, and the Turkish version of clotted cream called kaymak, brushed with butter and chopped pistachios.

Mild heat would be best recommended but there is an option to add chili oil, nam prik pao (chili sauce ) and dried Thai chili peppers with each meal. The reason for the flavor authenticity is the inclusion of Thai bird’s eye chili peppers in the dishes which was both an eye and tongue opener when I visited Bangkok in 2004.

Experience a market for Latin American and Mexican food here. A former grocery market, Plaza Mariachi is decorated in the decor one would expect in strolling a Mexican or Latin mercado. Its mission is that it “exists to celebrate cultural diversity.”

script on the outside, but once inside, it mimics a country tavern you would find in the Mediterranean.

No surprise you would find a Kurdish restaurant in the largest Kurdish community in the US, roughly at 20,000. The restaurant is also on the New York Times top 50 list of restaurants.

Ample menus perfect for family-style sharing include a litany of hot and cold appetizers known as meze.

Grilled kebabs and shawarma are a specialty, but vegetarian options are available.

My suggestion is to share the appetizers, especially the dips such as hummus, cacik (similar to the Greek Tzatziki sauce), and ezme, which is a salsa made with walnuts, vegetables, and pomegranate molasses.

One obvious feature that separates this place from any other liketype restaurant is its performance stage offering entertainment 7 days a week, including singers, circus performances, and salsa dancing groups.

A food court allows you to view the entertainment while partaking of the various food establishments set up aside.

You can find tacos, chimichurri grilled items, plantains, menudo, sopes and more.

Fresh fish, shrimp or both are cooked in the lemon and lime juice along with red onions and aji spice (yellow chile pepper) mixed in for a refreshing version of ceviche. Jalea, which is a lightly breaded and spiced fish over a bed of yucca is popular. Potatoes with a cheese and chili sauce called Papa a La Huancaina are a favorite here as well as the Tallarin Verde which is a pasta with a green pesto sauce.

Don’t miss the green plantains (tostones) served with two Peruvian sauces; one similar to an aioli and an aji verde, a spicy Peruvian green sauce.

Didn’t make room for dessert but did try the national Peruvian drink, the Pisco sour, similar to a whiskey sour but made with the liquor from Peru called Pisco, which is made from fermented grapes.

I’d highly recommend the street corn and grilled skewers. If you’re looking for tequila options, the Z bar offers excellent margaritas, micheladas, and palomas.

After you’ve finished eating, stroll through the various markets and find specialty Latin foods, Mexican tooled leather, and colorful embroidered apparel.

If I haven’t whet your appetite to try one or all of these places, stay tuned for the second part of this article, where you can shop for the ingredients and specialty foods to put a little international fare on your table.

Panca 3915 Nolensville Pike Peruvian specialtiesare found here. A casual type restaurant with an outdoor terrazzo and a bright colored llama adorning its bar, Panca is the part of the Plaza Mariachi concept of Latin American cuisine adjacent to the plaza.

Peruvian food is clearly not to be confused with Mexican fare as the county’s foods are influenced by indigenous Incan and Spanish tastes. Corn, potatoes, and grains Bar at Panca such as quinoa are mainstays along with grilled meats and fish.

The hallmark of Peruvian food is ceviche, and there are several types offered here.

Clarksville Academy Steak Dinner Clarksville Academy recently hosted its annual Steak Dinner, an evening of fundraising at the school that features great grilled steaks with all the trimmings, and on-stage, musical performances by CA students of all ages.

Sally Allen, CA’s Director of Advancement, said, “This is our 36th Annual Steak Dinner. We have about 150 students participating tonight, some as performers and some as our servers. We have students representing grades 2 – 12 in the show, and this is a fun event that everyone looks forward to every year. We’re expecting about 230 people tonight.

“The Broadway-esque show is called ‘Our Golden Era’ and it focuses on several different decades. There will be music by The Jackson 5, Patsy Cline, Elton John, ABBA. It’s kind of a mixture of songs that people in the audience will like, relate to, and want to sing along and tap their foot to. It’s also songs that the kids get excited about.”

Allen teams with the choir directors and CA Director of Schools, Jennifer Hinote to plan the evening’s themes and songs well in advance. She says the choir students, middle and upper school, start practicing in January, and the younger students start practicing in November.

“The kids actually put the show together in just a matter of weeks,” Allen said. “The money goes into our Annual Fund, which is used for general budget items - teachers’ salaries, maintenance, and care for the school, those kinds of things. This helps us keep tuition costs low.

“It takes a lot of volunteers to bring this together every year. Tonight, we’re all just excited to see the kids perform and have fun.”

Honoring Memorial Day with Reflection & Remembrance —a tribute to those who gave all

n a community like Fort Campbell and Clarksville, so closely tied together and proudly rooted in service, let’s remember with deep gratitude and honor those who never came home. This year, we invite our readers to reflect on fifteen somber, meaningful facts about Memorial Day and the sacrifices of our fallen heroes.

Memorial Day is for the fallen Veterans Day is to honor everyone who has served in our military. Memorial Day honors those who died in service to our country.

Memorial Day started after the Civil War The day was originally called Decoration Day. The tradition started when families of soldiers from both the Union and Confederate Armies would decorate the graves of the fallen with flowers.

The first official observance of Memorial Day was in 1868 May 30, 1868, was the first official Memorial Day. General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic issued a proclamation designating May 30th Decoration Day. More than 5,000 people traveled to gather at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC to lay flowers on all the headstones of the fallen.

That tradition is still carried out till this day as vol12

unteers decorate individual graves with American flags and flowers at cemeteries across the country.

Memorial Day recently became a federal holiday In 1971, Congress finally made Memorial Day a nationally recognized holiday and set its annual observance for the last Monday in May. Memorial Day was created by American citizens Before Congress made Memorial Day a national holiday, it was organized at the grassroots level by individuals, and local community organizations.

Leaving coins is a military tradition to show respect without disturbing the grave.

Red poppies are a symbol of remembrance Red poppies became the symbol of sacrifice, inspired by the WWI poem In Flanders Fields: “If ye break faith with us who die, we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders Fields.”

Flags fly at half-staff until noon On Memorial Day, the U.S. flag is flown half-staff until noon, then raised to full height, symbolizing both mourning and the resolve to move forward, strong.

Memorial Day is a deeply personal day for them as they continue to mourn in their loss.

Overseas cemeteries hold our heroes 130,000+ Americans are buried in U.S. maintained cemeteries around the world.

Rolling Thunder keeps the mission alive The Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally has honored POW/MIA service members, drawing thousands to Washington, D.C., every Memorial Day weekend since 1988.

The cost of freedom is high Freedom isn’t free. Every right we enjoy, freedom of speech, worshiping freely, protesting anything, and pursuing happiness, were all secured by those who served, with some paying the ultimate price while defending our freedoms.

This Memorial Day, let us continue to make the day sacred with reverence, gratitude, and pride.

Fort Campbell Memorial Day Ceremony Home to the 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell has been integral in every major conflict since WWII. From D-Day, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, many soldiers of the 101st have paid the ultimate price. A special wreath laying ceremony is held at the Eternal Flame of the 101st Division Headquarters.

A large community of Gold Star Families Clarksville, Oak Grove and Hopkinsville are home to dozens of Gold Star families who live among us, who have lost their loved ones in combat.

They are mostly the spouses and children of fallen soldiers, while some are siblings and parents.

NEW YORK BUTCHER SHOPPE Clarksville recently welcomed The New York Butcher Shoppe to the ever-growing Sango area. The company, whose motto is “Rare Quality, Well Done Service,” is a family-friendly market that offers the finest quality meats and exceptional personal service, as well as freshly prepared deli sandwiches, hot meals to go, a great selection of prepared meals, and much more.

Taylor Rather, a Clarksville resident for almost 30 years left a career in tech to open this up-and-coming franchise. “I just decided to dive in,” Rather said. “I thought The New York Butcher Shoppe would be a great addition to Sango.

“I’ve loved meat my entire life. Here, we offer a full line of certified Angus beef, and I mean all the cuts you can imagine.

We offer chicken and pork, Duroc pork which is excellent. It’s raised on acorns its whole life, and it’s delicious.” Rather said the shoppe will have fresh seafood and a constantly-changing variety of fish each week, which will be influenced by what his customers are seeking.

“We’ll always keep the staples – salmon, jumbo shrimp, scallops, etc,” Rather said. “We ground up meat fresh this morning.

We’re not a full restaurant, but we have a deli. We offer some great deli sandwiches and a comfortable place for you to enjoy them.

“We also offer a good variety of prepared meals -chili, white chicken lasagna, chicken Parmesan, eggplant Parmesan. So if someone wants to take a night off from cooking they can grab something to go for two, four, six or eight people. We also have wine coming soon. We’ll be selling wine by the bottle, but not for on-premise consumption.”

The shoppe will also have fresh sausage that is ground and stuffed daily. “We’re going to try to have a variety, at least four types of sausage available at all times. We’ll just have to get a feel for what folks want.”

Rather said butchered meats will be the shoppe’s main sellers, “but, we chose to open a model with a deli, because we felt this area had a real need for a good deli. Sango is booming, and we feel very fortunate to get into this great location with Millan Enterprises. Today is just our soft opening. We’ll do a grand opening soon, but so far we’re just rolling along and it has been great. There is nobody in town with this lineup of products. We’re so excited to be open.”

Jenni Comley said people started showing up at the Dotsonville Community Center by 4:00pm to drop off their entries in this year’s DCC Chili and Dessert Competition, an annual event that has been going on since before she arrived in the community, twenty years ago.

“Everyone gets to eat at 5 p.m. after the judging has completed,” Comley said. “This year, we’re doing cash prizes for the winners in chili and desserts. There are no age limits, and men, women or children are allowed to enter in either competition. Our Woodlawn community is really growing, and this is a tradition that everyone seems to enjoy.”

June 21 is the annual BBQ. Everyone is welcome. “We have a great barbecue, and it’s a chance for everyone to come in, meet their neighbors and have some good conversation,” Comley said.

DCC also hosts a Wild Game Dinner in January. Last year’s event was standing room only. “There are lots of door prizes and gift baskets in the silent auction,” Conley said. “We’ll also host our ice cream social in August. And, Friends-giving in November. We cook turkeys and ham, and we ask everyone to bring a side dish. It’s always a great sitdown dinner. It’s a really good thing, especially for those who don’t have family in the area.”

Chamber's Veteran Business of the Month larksville Area Chamber of Commerce recently selected Clarksville Elite Gymnastics Center as its Veteran Business of the Month, a local business that has grown exponentially over the last 25 years under the leadership of Larry Corrigan.

Corrigan is a retired U.S. Army. He started as a young Ranger then spent the rest of his career in 5th Group.

“I was in Group from 1988 – 2006,” Corrigan said. “I stayed in Charlie Co. 2nd Battalion for the vast majority of my service, 23 years total. I retired in 2006.”

Corrigan was on a HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) team. “We would jump on the weekends and flip and twist,” Corrigan said. “I wanted to learn how to do it better. We jumped in Huachuca and El Paso. Army jumps straight and falls flat. We jumped for fun and I wanted to learn to do it better. I made friends with a gymnastics coach, and after Somalia I was looking for something. I needed a hobby. I was working with the guy that taught us how to flip. I started teaching little kids, and it has led to this.”

Corrigan retired here in 2006. “I never moved away,” Corigan said. “I’m never going to. I love it here.”

He recently showed us around the 50,000+ s.f. Building that is called the Elite Sports Complex. “We’re

about to open a second building, which will house cheer-leading and an indoor playground for kids,” Corrigan said. “Here, we do gymnastics and we have a ninja course, So, there is tumbling, preschool gymnastics, recreational gymnastics, and team gymnastics.

“We work with kids from preschool to 18 years old.

And, we have one of the most dominant teams in the state. There is a gym in Franklin – Let it Shine, and ETC in Murfreesboro. The three of us sort of trade punches back and forth.”

Elite, in its most recent regional meet, did really well.

From the state of Tennessee four level-10 kids made it to Nationals and one of them is from Elite. 100% of Elite’s Level-9 kids made it.

“There is optional gymnastics for the upper levels and compulsory gymnastics for the little kids,” Corrigan said. “We have students as young as 18 months, competitive gymnastics starts around age 5. Most of our kids come out of the recreation program. Our coaches are very adept at identifying talent. We actually have a place on our teams for every kid. We have 147 kids on our team, and they represent all levels.”

“We currently have around 2,000 students enrolled, and we’re growing. We started in 2000, that’s when our gym opened. I was volunteering at a gym that closed and I decided to start my own place. I didn’t

know a lot, but us SF Guys think we can do anything.”

Elite started with just eight kids in a 6,000 s.f. Facility. They moved to a 9,000 s.f. building for several years. The gym was then set up in the Miss Lucille’s Marketplace complex for ten years.

“We got the opportunity to buy this land, and we finished this building a little over a year ago,” Corrigan said. “Here we have 54,000 s.f. The gym is 44,000. So, we’ve grown from 8 kids to 2,000 kids in 24 years.”

The Elite has 97 coaches, many of whom are college kids who teach a few hours a week. They also employ several who are professional full-time coaches.

“There used to be a USA Gymnastics tagline – ‘begin here, go anywhere’. My son was a wrestler. His twin sister was a collegiate gymnast. He learned standing flips and other things and it helped him as a wrestler. Other wrestlers would always ask him to show him how to do that.

“The foundation of gymnastics is strength, flexibility, balance, and speed. Those are things you need in all sports. If you train in gymnastics, it’s going to enhance any other sport you do, football, basketball, whatever.”

For Corrigan, it’s all about the kids. “I want to make sure we get a picture of our team,” Corrigan said. “I fired myself from the head coach position. I spend most of my time now setting up meets, from Phoenix to Detroit. I coach the girls you’re about to meet, but they’re the only ones. I’m ready to retire. The youngest of the girls I work with is here today. I want to see her through graduation and hopefully a college scholarship, and then Ill be done.”

Montgomery County Parks & Recreation recently hosted its 2nd Annual Easter Egg Hunt. Once again, the event was set up at Civitan Park, but this year activities expanded beyond the Lacrosse field, thanks to the addition of an Adaptive Easter Egg Hunt designed for all ages and abilities.

Fortera Credit Union proudly sponsored the adaptive hunt, with Fortera’s Susan Dickinson saying, “It’s an honor to support children and families of all ages and disabilities.” Another new partner for this year’s event was APSU’s Aviation Program. Families got the chance to get up close to on of APSU’s helicopters, which later, at 11:00am and 11:30am did two helicopter egg drops, one for the 6 – 8 age group and one for the 9+ group.

“We’ve had a great response to the adaptive hunt,” MoCo P&R’s Kara Zahn said. “We are so excited that Buddy Ball and Progressive Directions, Inc. teamed with us to provide an inclusive hunt for our special needs community. We are also very thankful for APSU’s Aviation Program. The helicopter egg drops are going to be really cool.

Hundreds came out for the event. Activities officially kicked off with the adaptive hunt on two smaller fields, then at 10:00am, the action began on the Lacrosse field with the 0 – 2 age group, followed by 3 – 5, 6 – 8, and lastly 9+.

Cheesy J’s opened on March 12 near Walmart in Sango, and so far the response has been fantastic, but what else would you expect from a place that sells classic comfort food like grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup, and challenges their customers to “get cheesy with it!”

The menu goes beyond just the basic grilled cheese we all grew up with. Partner/Manager Jennie Davidson said, “Among our big sellers are the Bar-B-Gouda – pulled pork, smoked Gouda and BBQ Sauce, and The Dip – roast beef, Swiss, Gruyere, onions, horseradish and au jus. Of course The Smoky and The Mac are very popular, too.

“We give a small side of our homemade classic tomato soup with every grilled cheese sandwich so that folks can try it. People are loving that it’s homemade, like our macaroni and cheese, and also the pies. Today we’re featuring chess pie.

Davidson has been working in customer service for more than 20 years, but this is the first time she has been a partner in a restaurant. “I managed Island Fin Poke for the Bryants, and they were so good to me, I wanted us to continue to work together,” Davidson said. “So, we partnered up and opened Cheesy J’s.”

There is a friendly disagreement about who is the “J” in Cheesy J’s, Jeff Bryant says it’s him, Davidson says it’s her. But both agree that so far everything with the new concept has been amazing.

“I love my customers,” Davidson said. “I love my staff, too. Without these great people I would be pulling my hair out. Lunch and dinner periods are both doing well, so we’re are staying pretty steady.”

Cheesy J’s currently offers dine-in and carry-out at its 2305 Madison Street location.

A Riveter’s Legacy: Honoring World War II Rosie

Their message, courage and grit endured through generations and are carried forth by today’s working daughters who continue to break barriers and achieve their own dreams.

As Mother’s Day approaches, many of us reflect on the women who shaped our lives with strength, sacrifice, and unconditional love. Here in Clarksville, we are honored to celebrate one such extraordinary woman: Thelma Louise Bryant.

The recognition ceremony, held at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library during DAR’s monthly meeting, served as both a heartfelt tribute and a living history lesson.

“We are honored to have Mrs. Thelma Bryant with us today. Mrs. Bryant and her family spent a year in Mobile, Alabama, during World War II. In order to be able to work alongside her mother as a riveter, she told an untruth about her age. Mrs. Bryant worked on airplanes, patching those that were damaged in the war.

Her children describe her as a hard worker who took pride in serving her country. A Clarksville resident, Mrs. Bryant has been featured in television stories and articles by the American Rosie the Riveter Association, of which she is a member,” wrote Brenda Graham, DAR’s First Vice Regent.

At 96 years young, Thelma is not just a mother; she is a living symbol of American resilience, wartime courage and the power of women to rise in the face of history.

In March, during Women’s History Month, Thelma was recognized and awarded by the Daughters of the American Revolution (Captain William Edmiston Chapter) for her vital role as a 24

Rosie the Riveter isn’t just a cultural icon. It’s a legacy of the millions of women who stepped into roles traditionally held by men during World War II.

These women played important roles during the war in shipbuilding, producing munitions (shells, bullets, etc.) and, yes, riveted aircraft that were crucial to the war efforts.

Among them was Thelma Bryant, who joined the workforce at just 16 years old, after lying about her age to contribute alongside her mother at Brookley Army Air Field.

As a riveter, Thelma was tasked with patching up aircraft damaged in the war. It was precise, physical, and

More than six million women joined the workforce during World War II, many of whom, like Thelma, had never held industrial jobs before. Their contributions not only helped win the war but also reshaped the role of women in America forever.

Today, the iconic image of Rosie the Riveter—strong, confident and determined— still resonates.

As we celebrate mothers this May, it’s worth taking a moment to honor the mothers who did more than raise children. They built a future.

Women like Thelma Bryant proved that strength and tenderness are not opposites, but partners. They showed us that being a mother means fighting for something bigger than yourself, whether in a home, a factory or on the front lines of history.

At 96, Thelma carries herself with quiet strength, perhaps the same that led her into the workforce eight decades ago. She continues to inspire not only her family but also an entire community, which is proud to call her one of their own.

“It was special to honor mom and all the Rosies. ... We’re very proud of her and it’s so nice of the DAR to recognize her,” said Mrs. Bryant’s daughter, Wanda Burnett.

Her story mirrors the untold tales of countless women whose wartime service was not only patriotic but deeply maternal: protecting future generations by securing a free and thriving nation.

The Captain William Edmiston Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized this, presenting Thelma with a certificate and medal to honor her as a local heroine during their Women’s History Month celebration.

“We’re excited to have her here today! The award we gave her was the Women In American History Award, and a medal,” said Marie Tillman, DAR Chapter Regent.

The event highlighted not just her contributions during World War II, but her enduring impact on the Clarksville community. Thelma’s recognition also serves as a reminder of the legacy left by “Rosies” across the country.

APSU Hosts Empowering 4th Annual Education Summit for Women Veterans Austin Peay State University recently hosted the 4th Annual Education Summit for All Women Veterans at the Newton Military Family Resource Center.

Katie Staple, Director, Veteran Initiative for the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, who manages the Veteran Reconnect Grant, which is available for Veteran Designated Campuses in Tennessee, was in attendance, as was Stephen Baird, representing Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve.

“We make sure that the tenets of the Uniform Services Employee Rights and Reemployment Rights law are enforced,” Baird said.

Karen Richards represented Neurolumen. “It’s a home pain therapy device that uses low-level lasers and infrared light. It’s available through the VA and works on neuropathy, arthritis, knee replacement, shoulder surgery, migraines, and any kind of pain.”

“U.S. Army (Ret.) MG Walt Lord said, “This is our 4th Annual Women Veterans Education Summit. This started when Yolonda Williams was the National Commander of Women Veterans of America. She brought us the idea, partnered with us, and within 30 days, we were able to put that first event together.

“It has just continued to grow every year. It’s a comprehensive collection of mostly non-profits that provide all kinds of services from education to health to financial support for women veterans. We do this each year during Women’s History Month.”

Waltrip Brewing Co.’s John Andrews said, “Joe Maynard is one of our investors, and part of our team. He has been a great supporter of the Michael Waltrip Brewing brand, and with our first Michael Waltrip signature bar, which is a concept he helped develop.

Niagara of the South

A Cumberland Falls

t 68 feet high and 125 feet wide, Cumberland Falls is something to bestow your eyes upon. It is the second-greatest volume of water, only to Niagara Falls, east of the Mississippi River. And to think that if it were not for some dogged efforts by some persistent Kentuckians, it would have been one massive hydroelectric plant and not the beautiful natural spectacle we see and enjoy today.

Inspired by a recent article and lecture by naturalist and artist Larry Richardson on the origins of our own Cumberland River, my husband and I set out to the southeastern part of Kentucky to visit Cumberland Falls State Park. The drive to the park across western Kentucky crosses through lush farmlands and rural towns until the topography changes, hills and hollers emerging with evergreens and limestone ridges into rugged terrain.

Cumberland Falls State Park was discovered by pioneers as far back as the 17th century. Explorer, Thomas Walker had the first written account of the Cumberland Falls area and is credited with naming the falls after the Duke of Cumberland.

But before that, the falls were considered sacred and a spiritual gateway by the Cherokee, Shawnee, Chickasaw, and Creek indigenous people. Land grants were issued in 1826 to two American Revolution soldiers

In the 1800’s sawmills were present with logs sent downstream to points west such as Nashville, Louisville and Frankfort. Later, as the 34

who established a dwelling, and it passed hands several times including during the Civil War where an established cabin onsite served as a hospital for injured soldiers. Later, it became a popular resort, and its first hotel was established in 1875.

The wooden log inn ran until 1902 when it was called the Brunson Inn after the present owner. When the state established the park in 1931 it was renamed the Moonbow Inn until it was destroyed in a fire.

Getting to Cumberland Falls at this time was quite a feat. The first stage of the journey was by rail to Parkers Lake, 12 miles from the falls. From there it was by mule-drawn wagons called “jolts”.

Silo Park Kicks Off 2025 at Old Glory with Live Tunes & Summer Vibes Old Glory Distilling Co. recently hosted its Silo Park launch party to kick off the 2025 outdoor dining and entertainment season with live music by Britt Dignan, Wes Beeler and Sadie Fine, great food, summer cocktails, and more.

Yellow Creek Baptist Church holds Easter Egg Hunt

Yellow Creek Baptist Church hosted its annual Community Easter Egg Hunt on April 19, 2025, drawing over 150 children and their families for a joyful day of fun, fellowship, and Easter celebration.

“We were excited to see so many visitors fill the field,” said Pastor Shane Moore, who thanked the volunteers for their dedication to serving the community.

Children took photos with the Easter Bunny before racing to find more than 14,000 eggs, carefully prepared by volunteers over several days. Five separate hunt zones ensured fun for all ages, even the tiniest participants.

Beyond candy, many eggs contained prize tickets, offering chances to win Easter baskets, scooters, a mini trampoline, and even a full-sized trampoline.

Children’s leader Jasmine Atkins shared, “It’s a blessing to spend time with our community families and see so many return year after year.”

Through it all, Yellow Creek’s mission shined brightly—to show love, offer hope, and welcome everyone like family. As Moore put it, “We hope every visitor felt loved and invited to make Yellow Creek their church home.”

Cafe 931 Captures Hearts with Home-Style Cali Mexican Cuisine

eeping secrets is hard, except when it comes to fantastic restaurants.

Sometimes, you hear about a place with great food and service, and think that must be new, only to discover that it has been around for months or even years.

Many in Clarksville heard about Cafe 931 for the first time when its owner, Claudia Oakes, and a couple of her signature items were featured on a Food Network show that focused on five of Clarksville’s outstanding locally-owned restaurants.

Cafe 931 has been in business since 2016. Oakes started with a catering business in Oregon, then eventually moved to Tennessee, where she had the opportunity to open the restaurant.

Burrito “It took off pretty fast,” Oakes said. “We’re from Southern California and we like to say our flavor is from So. Cal. When we got open during the pandemic we had a lot of people who couldn’t travel home, so they would come here to eat and they were like, ‘oh gosh, this feels like home’. We even had some customers who would cry, and say, ‘I haven’t been able to go home.

This just tastes like home.’”

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Pomona, 931 delivers Mexican food with “Cali” flavor. “We were born and raised in California, most of my family is still there, but my mom is here with us, she is from Gua38

dalajara, Mexico,” Oakes said. “We have traveled all over, and the flavors and recipes are just different. For example, a burrito, there are some places that cover them with cheese, we don’t do that.”

Oakes said that when her family first arrived in Tennessee, they would go to restaurants, and things would come out covered in cheese. “We would have to make a mental note - next time, no cheese, but then we would forget,” Oakes laughed. “When we opened Cafe 931 we were thinking fast, grab and go. We didn’t have much seating area. We said, let’s continue our burritos and do them without queso.

Let’s do it the way we like it, so that’s rice, beans cilantro, onions - that’s a Cali burrito.”

Cafe 931 does street tacos using two small tortillas, but on Tuesday nights they offer a homemade tortilla that is a little bigger and thicker. The restaurant’s big sellers are, for breakfast, the bacon chorizo burrito - Mexican sausage, potatoes, eggs and bacon, and of course the biscuits and gravy burrito.

During a recent food Network show that was shot in Clarksville, one of Claudia’s originals, the biscuits and gravy burrito got lots of attention. “After the show, everybody comes in for the biscuits and gravy burrito.

They say we saw this on Food Network. That’s the one we want to try.”

Oakes said her appearance on that show was definitely a boost for business. “Yes, we’re getting people from

all over the U.S. They saw us and they want to come and try us. We have people driving in from Florida and Texas, and others doing day-trips from Ohio and Illinois. They just want to make a day of it, and try what they saw on TV. They also want to visit the other Clarksville restaurants they saw on that show.”

So, where did this unique recipe come from? “I came up with that when I was trying to think outside the box,” Oakes said. “I thought, okay, we’re in the south, so … I was a cook in the Army. One of the first things I learned how to do was biscuits. I thought, this is something we can do, and it might be a hit.”

Oakes says her family came to Clarksville when her Husband received an interesting job offer. “The evolution of the restaurant has been very organic,” Oakes said. “We started with three tables, and then we needed more space, and now we’ve taken over this whole building. Barry, my husband, was working as a regional manager for Bank of America over southern Washington and all of Oregon. He was missing a lot of the kids activities and things like that, working all the time. He said, ‘this is not the life I want to live’. Our friend Randy invited him to check out Clarksville. He came to Tennessee, then came home and said, ‘hey, I think we’re moving to Tennessee’. I said, okay, I’ll follow you wherever you want to go.

Saturdays are busy at Cafe 931. “We get a lot of families that day. We’re closed on Sundays, and then on Mondays we’re restocking everything. Everything here is fresh.”

Oakes says the most popular lunch items would be the Quesabirria Combo - beef inside a corn tortilla with cheese, cilantro, and onion. “We grille it to make it toasty and give you the broth to dip it in. That combo is very popular. Another popular item is the Ramen Birria, so that’s the noodles, the meat and the juice with cilantro and onion, and quesadillas on the side.

“My favorite item is the Cali Burrito asada. That’s something I grew up with in Cali. In high school there was a Mexican restaurant right across the street, and just about every day I would go there and order a burrito asada.

“Oh, and you have to try the Acai, it’s a berry that grows in Brazil. The Acai bowls started in Brazil, then Hawaii. Our recipe came to us by way of Hawaii. It’s a little sweet, but it has lots of great benefits. If I want something good, but not too heavy, that’s my go-to. It’s very popular.”

“I love it here. I joined the military at the age of 18 and having Fort Campbell here makes it feel like home. This community is a little melting pot. We have a lot of customers who speak Spanish with us, and they love to chat with us.”

Oakes praises her mother, Juana Alvarez. “She stays so busy, as does my nephew,” Oakes said.

The Fort Campbell Broomball team, led by MG Brett Sylvia, sought to avenge its 2024 loss against the Montgomery County team, led by Mayor Wes Golden, at this year’s annual Mayor vs. General Broomball match at the Ford Ice Center inside F&M Bank Arena.

“This is a win, win,” Mayor Golden said. “We’re raising money for United Way. The community gets to come out and enjoy the show, and we get to build on the wonderful fellowship that exists between Fort Campbell, Montgomery County, and Clarksville. It’s all about coming together and having fun.”

MG Sylvia has a warning for Golden and his team before the match, “The Montgomery County team is in so much trouble, they don’t even know. … We have some formidable young players this year, so youth is on our side.”

During the evening, Clarksville Street Department faced Montgomery County Highway Department, and Clarksville Gas & Water faced Clarksville Fire Rescue. In the main match, Fort Campbell defeated Montgomery County 1 – 0, allowing MG Sylvia to direct some humorous comments at Mayor Golden.

Ukraine Rally Clarksville Indivisible recently hosted a Peace Rally for Ukraine. Dozens gathered at Patriots Park, including many Ukrainians who have made Tennessee and Kentucky their home.

Anastasia Huff, a member of the American-Ukrainian Community of TN and KY, herself with many family members still in Ukraine, said this was more than just a global issue. “We have friends and neighbors who are directly affected by Ukraine’s war with Russia,” Huff said. “There are citizens from both parties who stand with Ukraine.

This is about what’s right. It’s about the American values that we all share.”

The group also honored American fighters who volunteered to stand with Ukraine, and brought attention to the issue of the many thousands of Ukrainian children who have been abducted by Russia. Huff’s husband, James, shared information on how Ukrainian aid is being used to create jobs in this country.

Clarksville Indivisible’s Joy Rice said, “Members of the Ukrainian community reached out about organizing an event. We’ve had three years of war. Now, with peace talks happening, we want our elected leaders to know that we support Ukraine.”

Business Speed Networking Karla Mullen recently hosted one of her popular Business Speed Networking events, this time welcoming more than 60 local entrepreneurs to Clarksville Regional Airport, where they were invited to “... seek new clients, partners or collaborators, and build valuable connections, fast.”

“We actually had about 65 businesses sign up,” Mullen said. “The concept is similar to speed dating but for your business. Everybody gets about a minute to tell the person across from them what their business is, then they move on to the next table.”

The event attracts everyone from entrepreneurs and nonprofits to bigger businesses.

“I normally do this two to three times a year,” Mullen said. “I’m thinking about hosting a day session in May. We normally have 60 – 80 businesses in attendance. There are a lot of new businesses in town. Every time I host one of these, it’s about 50 % repeat and 50% people that have never been here before.”

Mullen was inspired by a BBB networking event that she attended about 17 years ago. “When I got into real estate, I got back into networking,” Mullen said. “I went to a networking event and felt awkward because nobody wanted to talk to me, and I just remembered how much fun the speed networking event was. I thought it would be a fun thing to bring back.”
