Independent Product Selection

We work closely with the Technical departments of housebuilders to drive innovation and support the UK’s ambition of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. A crucial aspect of this work is ensuring the early integration of solar PV systems into the building design process, which is essential for achieving a seamless and efficient installation. This includes careful consideration of how solar systems interact with roof structures, coverings, physical limitations, and electrical installations.

Additionally, we collaborate with manufacturers to challenge existing industry standards, identify and address potential weaknesses, and develop cutting-edge solutions that improve both safety and performance across the sector. Through these efforts, we aim to contribute to the ongoing transformation of the construction industry towards a more sustainable future.

Risk prevention

Fire safety measures

With our extensive experience in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, we have developed a keen understanding of the common failure points within the industry and have implemented strategies to eliminate these risks in our installations. Two of the most prevalent failure points are site-made MC4 connections and DC isolators, which have been identified as the leading causes of DC fires in PV systems. By proactively addressing these issues during the design and installation phases, we significantly reduce the likelihood of such failures.

Additionally, we recognise that product selection is critical in ensuring both the value and safety of our installations. As part of our commitment to safety, we exclusively supply inverters that feature integrated Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) technology, which is designed to detect and mitigate arc faults, preventing potential fire hazards.

Furthermore, we only use fully certified solar panel systems, ensuring that all components meet the highest safety and quality standards. This thorough approach to both design and product selection allows us to deliver reliable and secure solar PV systems that our customers can trust.

Electrical safety measures

Having over 40 years of experience as an electrical contractor, we possess a comprehensive understanding of the risks and complexities associated with electrical systems. Solar PV installations, which can operate at voltages exceeding 1000V, require specialist knowledge and strict adherence to safety protocols to protect both workers and property.

The system remains live during daylight hours once a solar panel installation is completed, which presents potential hazards if not properly managed. To ensure the safety of our team, we implement a range of preventative measures, including ensuring that no bare string cables are fed into the property, which could create an exposed live circuit. Additionally, we make certain that all DC cabling is clearly and visibly labeled to avoid any confusion or accidental contact.

These proactive steps are essential in maintaining a safe working environment and guaranteeing that those working in and around the property are protected from electrical hazards. Our long-standing commitment to safe working practices is fundamental in delivering high-quality, secure solar installations.lator

Regulatory compliance

There’s more to a solar installation than just the panels...

Ensuring compliance for properties with Solar PV systems involves more than simply appointing an MCS accredited installer. Due diligence is necessary to confirm that the materials and equipment installed are not only individually certified, but also certified as a complete system.

The MCS 005 standard applies to photovoltaic modules (solar PV panels), while the MCS 012 standard governs pitched-roof mounting kits, including in-roof systems. However, it is important to note that the mere presence of these accreditations for individual components does not guarantee that they have been tested and certified together as a unified system.

For full compliance, the MCS 012 certificate must specify the exact panel being installed and demonstrate compliance with the relevant BS EN 13501-5 fire standards. An indicative classification will not suffice. In the case of in-roof systems, a current fire classification of BROOF(t4) under BS EN 13501-5 is required. Without this classification, meeting the compliance requirements of Building Regulations Approved Document B (ADB Table 12.1) will be challenging.
