Independent Product Selection

We work closely with the Technical departments of housebuilders to drive innovation and support the UK’s ambition of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. A crucial aspect of this work is ensuring the early integration of solar PV systems into the building design process, which is essential for achieving a seamless and efficient installation. This includes careful consideration of how solar systems interact with roof structures, coverings, physical limitations, and electrical installations.

Additionally, we collaborate with manufacturers to challenge existing industry standards, identify and address potential weaknesses, and develop cutting-edge solutions that improve both safety and performance across the sector. Through these efforts, we aim to contribute to the ongoing transformation of the construction industry towards a more sustainable future.

Risk prevention

Fire safety measures

With our extensive experience in solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, we have developed a keen understanding of the common failure points within the industry and have implemented strategies to eliminate these risks in our installations. Two of the most prevalent failure points are site-made MC4 connections and DC isolators, which have been identified as the leading causes of DC fires in PV systems. By proactively addressing these issues during the design and installation phases, we significantly reduce the likelihood of such failures.

Additionally, we recognise that product selection is critical in ensuring both the value and safety of our installations. As part of our commitment to safety, we exclusively supply inverters that feature integrated Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) technology, which is designed to detect and mitigate arc faults, preventing potential fire hazards.

Furthermore, we only use fully certified solar panel systems, ensuring that all components meet the highest safety and quality standards. This thorough approach to both design and product selection allows us to deliver reliable and secure solar PV systems that our customers can trust.

Electrical safety measures

Having over 40 years of experience as an electrical contractor, we possess a comprehensive understanding of the risks and complexities associated with electrical systems. Solar PV installations, which can operate at voltages exceeding 1000V, require specialist knowledge and strict adherence to safety protocols to protect both workers and property.

The system remains live during daylight hours once a solar panel installation is completed, which presents potential hazards if not properly managed. To ensure the safety of our team, we implement a range of preventative measures, including ensuring that no bare string cables are fed into the property, which could create an exposed live circuit. Additionally, we make certain that all DC cabling is clearly and visibly labeled to avoid any confusion or accidental contact.

These proactive steps are essential in maintaining a safe working environment and guaranteeing that those working in and around the property are protected from electrical hazards. Our long-standing commitment to safe working practices is fundamental in delivering high-quality, secure solar installations.lator

This helps our installers stay updated on the latest safety protocols and industry best practices.

In essence, Clarkson Evans’ in-house team of fully qualified electricians and solar installers is committed to providing exceptional service, driven by ongoing training, development, and a dedication to excellence in every installation.

Working with us

DNO (District Network Operators)

As the adoption of low-carbon technologies continues to grow, it is essential for Network Operators (DNOs and IDNOs) to stay informed about the quantity and location of energy assets within their networks. At Clarkson Evans, we support our customers by managing the application and notification process for new Solar PV installations. Our services ensure that network operators can maintain a safe, efficient, and reliable infrastructure, helping to facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources while upholding network safety standards.

MCS certificates (Microgeneration Certification Scheme)

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is a recognised standard of quality within the renewables sector, and Clarkson Evans takes pride in certifying all of our solar installations to MCS standards. This certification not only guarantees the highest level of workmanship but also ensures that all products installed are MCS accredited, further reinforcing our commitment to delivering reliable and efficient renewable energy solutions.

Customer handover packs

Providing homeowners with clear and detailed information about their solar installation is essential, as many may be unfamiliar with the benefits of producing their own energy. Effective communication helps homeowners better understand their solar systems, ensuring they feel confident and informed about their investment. Supporting homebuyers with this crucial information not only enhances their overall experience but also plays a vital role in their decision-making process throughout their journey. For housebuilders, prioritising this educational support is key to fostering long-term satisfaction and trust with customers.

Performance monitoring

All non-compliances are closely monitored to drive continuous improvement. When issues arise, installers receive additional training and technical updates to prevent recurring mistakes and reinforce best practices.

Installer performance, assessed through the “right first time” metric, is regularly reviewed to identify areas for improvement. We are committed to maintaining high-quality standards and continuously enhancing our performance through ongoing monitoring and support.

Solar PV solutions

Solar PV designs

Our expert PV design team offers a comprehensive, end-to-end design solution, delivering a complete package that includes SAP assessment calculations and DWG drawings to optimise energy efficiency ratings for our customers. We collaborate closely with our customers’ technical teams to integrate PV systems into the building design at the earliest stage, addressing potential challenges related to rooftop space and the placement of inverters and other generation equipment.

Our team is highly responsive to changes and on-site adjustments, ensuring the final design meets our customers’ evolving needs. With specialist knowledge and strong partnerships with manufacturers, we are able to produce detailed designs and as-built working drawing packages. Leveraging our combined expertise in solar PV and electrical systems, we seamlessly integrate the PV installation with other building services and trades, providing comprehensive designs tailored for both roofing and electrical contractors.

The advantage of our ‘one-stop shop’ approach is that all liability is consolidated under a single supplier/installer. This streamlined process ensures a clear understanding of both the DC and AC components of the installation, with this information clearly defined in our designs.

SolShare installations

Our experts can seamlessly integrate SolShare into solar PV designs, offering a behind-the-meter solution that makes solar energy accessible to multiple flats within the same building. By connecting a single rooftop PV array directly to individual flats, SolShare ensures that each household receives its share of clean, renewable energy. This innovative system allows residents to benefit from solar power while retaining the flexibility to choose their own energy retailer. As a direct connection of solar to flats, SolShare systems are eligible for the maximum SAP uplift, often resulting in an EPC uplift of at least one band, making it a highly effective and sustainable solution for shared energy use in multitenant buildings.

Housebuilder training

Solar PV Training for Housebuilders

We are committed to equipping housebuilders with the essential knowledge and skills to integrate solar photovoltaic (PV) systems into their projects. Our comprehensive training program is designed to cover every aspect of solar PV technology, from the basics of the equipment to the ongoing aftercare processes, ensuring housebuilders can offer energy-efficient solutions to homeowners with confidence.

Our training begins with a solid foundation in the core components of a solar PV system. We provide in-depth product training on solar panels, inverters, and battery storage solutions, giving housebuilders a thorough understanding of the technology.

In addition to product knowledge, we delve into the critical processes involved in the installation and operation of solar PV systems. Our training covers the steps for working with Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), guiding housebuilders through the process of connecting systems to the local electricity grid. We also explain the intricacies of export tariffs, helping housebuilders understand how these schemes work and how homeowners can benefit from them. Furthermore, we provide insights into system kWh generation expectations, discussing the factors that influence performance and why certain systems may generate more or less energy than expected.

We also provide user guides that simplify the process of installation and maintenance for both housebuilders and homeowners. These easy-to-follow manuals ensure that everyone involved in the solar installation process has clear instructions, from setup to routine maintenance, enabling a seamless experience.

Finally, our training extends to aftercare processes, ensuring that housebuilders are fully equipped to handle ongoing support for solar PV systems. We offer guidance on call-out times, providing housebuilders with the necessary information on response times and service level agreements. Additionally, our aftercare training covers maintenance and troubleshooting, ensuring that housebuilders are prepared to assist homeowners in keeping their solar systems running at peak performance.
