Daxton Hotel

The Daxton Hotel consists of a 5-story 151 guest room new build, which also showcases The Madam restaurant, 4,000 sq ft Ballroom, Men’s & Woman’s Parlors, Wine Room, Private Dining Room, two Mezzanine Level Meeting Rooms, Main Lobby Bar and Lounge, and Fitness Center.

The project broke ground in April 2018 and was open to receive guests on April 1, 2021. The building also includes a green roof, two below grade parking levels, 9 top floor long term stay suites including walk-out terraces, and a lighted villa walkway to the North.

Site Logistics Challenges Located in the pedestrian popular City of Birmingham, The Daxton Hotel stands proudly in a downtown setting where real estate is at a premium. Depending on City permitted lane closures, the project site fluctuated between approximately 30,000 & 32,000 sq ft throughout the project.

With the building footprint approximately 25,000 sq ft, additional coordination was required to complete the building facade while sharing the remaining 5,000 sq ft with constant material deliveries.

Material staging was not often available, mostly limiting the jobsite to on-time delivery. Morning foreman huddles worked to improve workflow while a material delivery board offered delivery scheduling down to the minute. The 145ft tower crane was utilized for ~3/4 of the project, which was able to help with staging material around the jobsite when not being used for concrete or cast stone activities.

Prior to COVID-19 changing the way the jobsite was able to gather and discuss safety, a monthly lunch & learn was held by each subcontractor. This allowed the entire jobsite to take time over lunch, to learn about a hot button safety topic related to that particular trade.

Communicating specific risks, sometimes more prevalent to a particular trade, helped improve the overall group effort to have everyone go home safe at the end of each day.

During each lunch & learn, BRAVO card incentives were rewarded, typically with a small visa gift card and/or Clark gear. Drawing a “winner” from the large stack of BRAVO cards each month in front of the entire jobsite offered opportunity for open discussion and recognition of issues and praise for exemplifying good safety culture.

PREVENTION TIPS: 1. COVER UP - Wear loose fitting clothing, long sleeved shirts and pants to prevent sun burn.

2. USE SUNSCREEN with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Follow application directions on the container.

UV Safety Facts Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation is the hazardous waves of energy produced by sunlight. Sunlight can be exciting and fun-as there is so much to do outside when the weather gets warm, but if you forget to protect yourself, it can result in pain or even life threatening risks long-term.

Acute overexposure to UV radiation can cause skin burn, but chronic overexposure can lead to skin cancer, eye damage, and even affect our immune system. Young children are more easily burned due to the sensitivity of their skin.

3. WEAR A HAT! The brim of a hat can keep the sun out of your face, neck, and shoulders. Baseball caps will have little coverage, but a wide-brimmed hat can cover more area.

4. WEAR UV-ABSORBENT SUNGLASSES The sunglasses will be labeled with protection ratings on the product tag or lens’ themselves.

5. LIMIT EXPOSURE UV rays are most intense between 11:00AM-4:00PM. OTHER RISK FACTORS: • GEOGRAPHICAL: Closer to the equator will result in greater UV intensity levels • ALTITUDE: The higher the altitude, the closer to the sun = the higher intensity of UV rays.

• SETTING: Wide Open Spaces are going to have a higher opportunity of UV risk than an area with trees or plenty of shade.

• MEDICATIONS: Know what you are putting in the body. Certain medications can increase the sensitivity in the skin, which could cause easier sunburn. If you are unsure or curious, call your physician.

You do not need to be afraid of the outdoors or sun. Wear proper eye and skin protection and enjoy the weather! Preparation is the key to prevention!
