FireKeepers Hotel Expansion

FireKeepers Hotel Expansion Project consists of a

new Four Diamond Hotel Tower that includes 203 new hotel rooms, new high limit gaming area and lounge, four new bars, a Grab-and-Go style pastry bar, Porte Cochere expansion and FireKeepers’ flagship restaurant Nibi.

The building is an 8-story cast in place concrete structure plus a basement with unitized curtainwall and metal panels for the exterior skin.

and with a sf of 190,000 sf spread amongst 9 floors, workers are working in all areas at the same time.

The COVID-19 shutdown happened at the beginning of Q3 of the project schedule. The manpower counts were climbing as the shut down happened. The project manpower was at 180 tradespeople. The largest safety challenge on the project was keeping the project moving while keeping all of the workers safe and following COVID-19 guidelines.

With signage, socially distant daily huddles, multiple job site stand downs, and constant enforcement we were able to limit the impact of COVID-19 on the project workers.

For the COVID cases that the project did have, the cases were traced to off-site gatherings.

Jill consistently maintains a safe and organized job site. She is open to challenging others and leading safe practices among the trades and the job.

This has been especially challenging with additional site specific COVID processes and procedures.

With project safety requirements evolving throughout the COVID-19 timeline, it is important to have boots on the ground looking out for the health and safety of each person on site. Ensuring that everyone goes home safely means putting in the legwork each day to review site conditions, discuss with personnel, and take action to eliminate hazards.

Winter Hazards in Construction Of all the industries covered under MIOSHA, the construction industry continues to be one of the most hazardous. Every day hazards include slips, trips and falls, struck-by incidents, injuries to the hands, feet and head as well as the numerous obstacles a worker must face depending on the weather.

It is no secret that workers must combat inclement weather types of all kinds, including the extremes of the summer and winter. In the summer, temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit can present hazards that result in serious illnesses including heat stress, heat exhaustion and heat stroke—a serious illness that could be fatal.

While we have covered heat illnesses and how to prevent them, it is about time that we focus in on the hazards that can be present on construction sites due to the wintery mix of weather that we may see from October to March.

We will explore some of the hazards that are present in the coldest months of the year and what we can do to prevent and avoid them on our project sites.

COLD-RELATED ILLNESSES & INJURIES: Exposure to cold can range from discomfort to a potentially dangerous situation that can result in serious injury or even death. Working outside in the winter months risk exposure to extreme temperatures that could cause serious injuries such as chilblains, trench foot, frostbite and hypothermia. These cold weather illnesses and injuries can lead to serious and permanent issues for a worker including amputation and death. We will be sending out toolbox talks on cold weather safety over the next months to share with our site contractors.

WINTER WEATHER DRIVING: According to the Federal Highway Administration, on average there at 5,891,000 vehicle crashes each year.

Approximately 21 percent of the crashes, or more than 1.2 million, are weather-related. Of those weatherrelated accidents, 18 percent happen during snow or sleet, 13 percent on icy pavement and 16 percent of weatherrelated crashes take place on snowy or slushy pavement. It is important that our workers understand how extreme winter weather conditions can impact the roadways.

SLIPS, TRIPS & FALLS: While slips, trips and falls are a major hazard in any industry at any time of year, the winter weather makes this hazard particularly hard to avoid as workers battle the slick conditions of ice and snow. Slips, trips, and falls can result in bruises, abrasions, broken limbs, cracked ribs, serious back injuries and even trauma to the head, it is important to do everything we can to prevent this hazard on our sites.

PREPARATION IS PREVENTION: In the end, preparing for wintery weather and extreme cold will help ward off cold-related hazards on the jobsite, ensure that workers know and understand how the cold can impact their bodies, the ground beneath them and the normal conditions in which they work.
