I

n celebration of Red Cross Youth Month, the Philippine Red Cross Malabon City Chapter

conducted a bloodletting program with a theme of "Give Blood and Keep the WORLD Beating" at City of Malabon University (CMU) on Sunday, October 22. The said program was in partnership with the CMU National Services Training Program (NSTP) that aims to collect 500 bags of blood from the participants to provide help to indigent people and the residents of Malabon in vulnerable situations. Participants are asked to register and undergo a check up to test if they are qualified to participate in the said blood donation. Malabon Chapter Head, Ms. Julie Legaspi said that this event aims to let the students know the importance of blood donation. She also added that it brings out their sense of volunteerism,

"Alam ninyo kasi sa isang bag ng dugo marami kayong maliligtas—you can save three people. So para hanggat bata pa kayo, hanggat estudyante kayo, malalaman ninyo na mahalaga pala 'yung blood donation." Several students of CMU participated in the said blood donation drive, Samantha Carana, a first year CMU student from Bachelor of Science in Business Accountancy Major in Marketing Management, said she felt nervous during the process of blood donation. "As a student, maganda po 'yung nakakapag-donate tayo ng dugo para po sa ibang tao po na nangangailangan," she added. Aside from students, residents of Malabon also participated in the said event. Marie Grace Ganuelas, a resident from Panghulo, Malabon, said that she felt happy donating her blood and being back to her alma mater.

She emphasized the quote "Dugong buhay, dugtong buhay.", "Napakagandang nagdo-donate tayo ng dugo natin at least every three months kasi nakakatulong din siya hindi lang sa ibang tao pati na rin sa sarili natin," she added. Philippine Red Cross Chairman, Dir. Ricky Sandoval, pointed out the importance of the said blood donation. "Here in Malabon, we have [a] blood bank, and this is the source of [our] constituents—of course, and mga hospitals na nangangailangan ng dugo. So we not only go to institutions like this but we also go to other companies, to the police, to fire volunteers, and other people that might want to donate blood," he said. CONTINUATION ON PAGE 3
