Concept Keywords
WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN THESE PARTICULAR KEYWORDS?
These particular keywords were inspired from the site and my manifesto. My chosen site’s circular configuration helped me look into the symbolism of circles and what they might mean not only universally but, even more specifically, “how do different cultures interpret the shape?” Additionally, my manifesto was another element that inspired these key words. It was solely focused on my particular question, “How can place making theory help designers to create more inclusive environments for different communities?” With this question I decided to create a residential hub for students from various universities across Birmingham. I gathered keywords that would reflect and summarise my design proposal. I asked myself these following questions:

• What do you want the users to experience? • How can you ease the process of placemaking, especially for international students? • How might people feel more welcomed? • What does the circle symbolise? WHY GATHERING KEYWORDS ARE ESSENTIAL?
Gathering keywords is a great starting point in sparking initial conceptual ideas. Having multiple keywords and their synonyms help by widening my options and creativity.
HOW MIGHT IT HELP DEVELOP YOUR DESIGN? Having conceptual words help inspire new design and it will allow me to have a better understanding of what I want to design. Additionally, it makes the concept development easier by creating a foundation - a starting point for the design process. For example, I can use these keywords to influence the type of circulation I want the user to experience, the juxtaposition of furniture, lighting, and overall the spatial configuration to make it feel more like a community. This can be a place where different cultural groups can interact, develop life skills, feel a sense of purpose etc.
These keywords are influenced by, my manifesto; the purpose of creating an environment that is welcoming and one that tailors different cultural groups.
