Case Study: Film
The Man Who Knew Infinity
ABOUT:
The film is based in the UK. It’s about an Indian man named Srinivasa Ramanujan who travels to the UK to publish his remarkable discoveries about infinity, using his knowledge about mathematics and physics to support his ideas. However, he was surprise to come to racial scrutiny and exclusion. Additionally, Srinivasa had very limited knowledge about England’s culture and weather which resulted in him catching a common cold due to the lack of clothing.
HOW DOES THIS RELATE?
The film is about a person of a different ethnic group coming into a new country and not feeling welcomed. We see him struggle to settle and adapt in a new environment and face racial scrutiny. This relates to my project because it focuses on creating a space that welcomes and eases the process of place-making for students like Srinivasa. After having watched the film, there are some questions I have noted to further develop my research. For example: • How might I make it easier for students like Srinivasa to feel included, limit racial exclusion and overall feel more welcomed in a new environment. • How did the character feel throughout the film? How did he feel when he first moved? When he faced racial scrutiny etc.
