The Invisible Party

The Student Hotel, designed by The Invisible Party is located in the heart of the city of Amsterdam. It is easily accessible, next to Delft Central Station. The Student hotel has a range of spaces where individuals can collaborate with one another and feel a sense of community. There is a multi-programme of spaces within the hotel. For example, workspaces - both private and public and an in-house restaurant. The overall brand identity is very distinctive, showing a clear link between the Student Hotel and of Delft University of Technology. For instance the usability and visual aesthetics are incorporated. Designers have also utilised bright and vibrant colours reflecting the city - adding a playful element.

The hotel is open planned with many large windows, allowing a lot of natural light to fill the space. Concrete columns give it a casual and cosy aesthetic. The exposed piping on the ceiling adds an industrial look. The design building has carefully considered sustainability through their motto of ‘less-is-more’. For example, the spatial configuration is circular, reducing carbon footprint. Furniture has also been created using the same circular design. This means screws and bolts can easily be removed and recycled.

The fabrics and materials used on furniture are all from recycled materials and products. For example, chairs made of old jeans and recycled milk caps. Designers have avoided using glue, instead using water-based paint. Suppliers are all environmentally friendly.

How might this influence my work?

I would like to utilise some design elements from this case study. For example, taking a sustainable approach to design, incorporating colour, materials and an overall aesthetic that reflects Birmingham.
