WHAT DOES IT SYMBOLISE
The Roundhouse’s circular form symbolises wholeness and community. For instance when people gather in groups, they tend to form circles - this enables everyone to see each other and form better group discussions and a sense of togetherness. This type of group forming can also be further explored by looking at tribes.
A tribe harbours a perfect environment for different people to come together and share ideas, fostering a sense of community. These rituals provides individuals with a sense of purpose and are then more likely to interact with other people. For example, Tapeba Amerindians in Brazil, perform their ritual in a circle. The enables the group to form a community and a sense of togetherness.
A more contemporary example are summer camps. During the evenings, people will often gather around a fireplace. This is for many reasons; for warmth, but, its a place where people share stories and build intimate connections. The Roundhouse reminds me of this.
HOW MIGHT THIS RELATE TO MY PROJECT?
By analysing how tribes form rituals in a circle indicates how important the shape is. To them forming a circle during their rituals helps create a sense of community and purpose. Additionally, looking at a contemporary example of people gathering around a camp fire also highlights the significance of circles and their positive impact on people. This is something that I want to take forward into my design project.
