Outstanding Leaders Under 40 Dr. Walter Lee ’12

Dr. Walter Lee, known as “The C.A.R.E. Specialist,” is an assistant professor of middle/secondary education at the University of South Carolina Upstate. He is also the campus coordinator of the nationally acclaimed Call Me MiSTER Program and an ambassador for the Black College Fund.

Lee's research centers on self-concept development strategies for African American learners. His research encompasses various aspects such as the intersectionality of poverty and race, the concept of color blindness, equitable instructional practices, culturally relevant pedagogy, and cultural competence.

Lee employs qualitative research methodologies, including interviews, autoethnographies, and focus groups, to carry out his research.

Lee teaches a range of courses covering topics like curriculum, instruction, assessment, and research. He has presented his theoretical framework for educating African American learners locally and nationally. His work on self-concept development fosters "healing through love and critical insight."
