Forgivable loans help area small businesses

911 Cellular and Surgical Theater are helping grow the commercial landscape in Beachwood after each business received a $20,000 forgivable loan that will be used toward the companies’ investment into the city.

911 Cellular is moving its headquarters from Solon to Beachwood, while Surgical Theater is splitting its warehouse and production space and its corporate offices into two separate locations in the city.

Beachwood City Council approved the move during a meeting on Sept. 15 and the repayment, which is to be over the next three years, will be generated from the income taxes both businesses will pay the city from new employees that will be added.

“The city put into place a revolving loan fund a few years ago, I think it was in 2023, and as part of that, some loans are designated for emerging cluster industries within the community as well as commercial revitalization,” Catherine Bieterman, Beachwood’s economic development director, told the Cleveland Jewish News. “These two loans fell under those programs.”

The loans first were approved by the city’s loan review committee and the

community improvement corporation board of directors.

“Both companies are going to be investing in new space for their headquarters locations,” Bieterman said. “Surgical Theater has been in our community for years and was in need of additional spaces. They’ve continued to grow, so their headquarters are now to be on Chagrin Boulevard and their warehouse operations will remain in the Commerce Park area.”

“The business owner of 911 Cellular is moving from a neighboring community. He has owned the building here in Beachwood and now is moving his operations here as he’s continuing to grow and accelerate positions to fuel research and opportunities in the security area.”

Bieterman said during the council meeting that the projects help fill office space within Chagrin Boulevard while ensuring that Beachwood supports the city’s increasing industry in technology, research and development with job creation and commercial growth.

“These loans can be used to support investment in research and development.” Bieterman told the CJN. “If you’re adding new positions, it can help support any equipment that may be necessary or support the addition of key R&D (research and development) employees. There’s also commercial revitalization, investment into an office building that’s necessary to continue to grow your operations, that qualifies as well.”

911Cellular, previously located at 6001 Cochran Road in Solon, provides panic alert systems, like panic buttons or wearable devices, and emergency notification networks for schools, places of worship, health care institutions and more.

The company has begun to work out of its new location at 24103 Chagrin Blvd., a building that was already owned by Chad Salahshour, the CEO and founder of 911Cellular. It plans on investing $175,000 into the fresh spot.

911Cellular did not respond to request for comment by the CJN, but Salahshour expressed his gratitude to the city and council in the Sept. 15 council meeting and said it’s the company’s vision to “make Beachwood, Ohio, the safety center for all our communities in the United States.”

Surgical Theatre, which was once at 781 Beta Drive in Mayfield, moved into 23645 Mercantile Road in Beachwood’s Commerce Park within the last few years and as the company has grown rapidly, decided to relocate its offices to 24100 Chagrin Blvd., where it plans to add new employment.

The warehouse and production side of the business will remain on Mercantile Road.

“The City of Beachwood’s support is the catalyst for our new corporate headquarters; a space built to fuel innovation and growth,”

Jeff Witherite, the CFO of Surgical Theater, said to the CJN in an email. “This investment accelerates our mission to advance our AIpowered eXperiential Reality (XR) platform, which transforms traditional 2D medical

imaging into interactive 3D models that enhance how surgeons educate patients, rehearse before entering the OR, and perform surgical procedures with precision. From here, we’ll continue leading the next generation of medical innovation and patient care.”

Surgical Theater develops virtual reality platforms that use patient’s medical images, such as CT and MRI scans, to help surgeons and other medical professionals with the rehearsal and planning for operations and surgeries. The company plans to invest $40,000 into its new office space.

“The city of Beachwood continues to see investments that are being made in these emerging industries,” Bieterman said. “Those include technology companies, like 911 Cellular, and medical technologies that are out there, like Surgical Theater. That’s really what this loan program is intended to do: support companies that are making investments in growing these emerging industries that are here within our community.”

And the loan program is a symbiotic relationship as the companies get help expanding while Beachwood grows as a hub for new or up-and-coming businesses.

“These programs are designed to assist companies in that growth stage as they’re bringing on new employment, and we’re there as a partner to continue to support the investments they’re making, both within the city of Beachwood and the physical space that they have,” she said.

Retired business executives create candy bar to benefit dog rescue

Retired business executives Melanie and Toby Maloney of Russell Township recently took a step away from retirement to launch a new treat into local markets called the toby bar – a crunchy chocolate and peanut butter bar that the couple dreamed of creating for years, according to a news release.

The toby bar is a two-bite-sized candy bar with a milk chocolate coating and crunchy peanut butter center, which the couple described as “pure delight in every bite.”

Having grown up in separate small-business families, the Maloney’s goal as entrepreneurs is not only to have a successful product, but to have an impactful product.

To make their impact, the couple has decided to donate a portion of the proceeds from each sale to benefit Airedale Terrier Rescue and Adoption, a nonprofit organization that they have long supported, being owners themselves of an Airedale named Casey.

“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to make people happy with our snack,” the Maloneys said in the release.

“And it also gives us a chance to give back to a charity we’ve long admired.”

Having lived in Northeast Ohio for nearly 30 years, the Maloneys said that they are happy to support the local economy and have worked with local businesses in the creation process of bringing the toby bar to life.

“We’ve worked with Ines Rehner of Sweet Designs Chocolatier in Lakewood to test and perfect the concept,” the Maloneys said. “We’re using Giannios Candy Company of Struthers, OH, which has been in business since 1910, as our manufacturer. We’re also using Solon and Twinsburgbased-suppliers for our packaging. In the coming months, we look forward to building our retail presence in Ohio.”

The toby bar is available at local retailers such as Sweet Designs, Patterson Fruit Farm, Lemon Falls and Krieger’s Market, and the company is preparing a nationwide rollout in early 2027. It can also be purchased online at tobybar. com.

“If people enjoy the toby bar as much as we do, we’ll be ready and eager to scale,” Melanie Maloney said in the release.

The toby bar is the first product of Toby Enterprises LLC.

The Rise of Digital Health Tools for Small Businesses

Small businesses are increasingly embracing digital health tools as a way to enhance employee wellness programs.

While wellness programs have traditionally been seen as an investment that small businesses shy away from, digital health tools can be implemented at a low cost, offering high returns in terms of employee health, engagement and satisfaction.

These tools, including mobile apps and wearable devices, provide affordable and effective methods for employees to take charge of their health and wellbeing, offering tangible benefits for both the employees and the employers.

MOBILE APPS AND WEARABLES FOR WELLNESS

Mobile apps have become a cornerstone in employee wellness programs. They enable employees to set fitness goals, engage in wellness challenges and monitor nutrition, making it easier to adopt healthier habits. These platforms not only promote physical

health but also foster camaraderie and friendly competition among team members, creating a supportive and engaged workplace culture.

Wearable devices, such as fitness trackers and smartwatches like the Apple Watch, are also growing in popularity. These devices give employees real-time data on their activity levels, heart rate, sleep patterns and even stress levels. This immediate feedback allows individuals to make informed decisions about their health throughout the day. For small businesses, wearables can help employees identify health issues early, reducing absenteeism and boosting productivity, which are critical in maintaining a lean and effective workforce.

AI-DRIVEN HEALTH SOLUTIONS FOR PERSONALIZED CARE

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing how small businesses approach employee wellness. AI-powered platforms analyze vast amounts of health data to provide personalized recommendations and predict potential health risks. These platforms can monitor employee activity, diet, and sleep patterns and offer insights tailored to individual needs.

For small businesses with limited budgets, AI-driven health tools are a cost-effective way to provide personalized health support without the expense of one-on-one medical care. By identifying early signs of chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes or stress, these platforms can guide employees toward preventive care, reducing the need for costly interventions later on.

PREVENTATIVE CARE: A SMART INVESTMENT FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

Preventative care is one of the most impactful aspects of digital health tools. By using technology to track fitness, nutrition and overall wellness, small

businesses can help employees take a proactive approach to their health, which can prevent more serious health issues from developing. Working with tele-med tools allows employees to seek care and have no out-of-pocket expenses if coded as a wellness visit.

Investing in preventative care has long-term benefits for small businesses. Healthier employees are more productive and engaged, and they take fewer sick days, which directly impacts a business’s bottom line. These programs encourage employees to make positive lifestyle changes that lead to long-term health improvements.

THE FUTURE OF DIGITAL HEALTH IN SMALL BUSINESS BENEFITS

As digital health technology continues to evolve, small businesses will have access to more sophisticated and personalized health solutions. These tools enable small business owners to offer wellness programs that would have once been out of reach, promoting early intervention and healthier lifestyle choices that ultimately reduce healthcare costs.

For small businesses, the appeal of these tools lies not only in their effectiveness but also in their affordability.

In conclusion, digital health solutions will continue to transform the way small businesses approach employee benefits and soon medical underwriting. Mobile apps, wearable devices and AI-driven platforms are helping small businesses create healthier, more engaged workforces, all while managing costs. By investing in these tools, small businesses will improve both employee satisfaction and their overall bottom line — creating a win-win situation for all.

Generator Pros

A POWERFUL, AFFORDABLE SOLUTION FOR HOMES AND BUSINESSES –AUTOMATIC STANDBY GENERATORS

Recent developments surrounding weather patterns and old electrical grid have created a renewed awareness that our electrical service is very fragile. It will continue to be a way of life. What is your back-up plan? When electricity is down, it can take hours or days for it to be restored –in spite of the diligent efforts of utility workers. We cannot tame the weather, but the GeneratorPros at Shepp Electric Co. can help to ensure that you are safe, warm and still in business no matter what unlikely disasters will occur.

There is never a lack of demand for the sorts of GENERAC generators that Shepp Electric provides –a fact that has helped the company thrive for over 30 years now. “We are a family business with family values! In fact, we are the only family-owned and -operated generator company on the North Coast. We cover all of Northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania,” Craig said, and this is one Geauga County businessman who racks up the mileage to show it. “We literally install two systems every day.” Unlike any other company around, this is all they do. They are totally devoted to standby power, and this is why they are the area’s leading GENERAC “Premier” warranty dealer and installer. With over

6,000 systems installed and serviced, hundreds have benefited from the GeneratorPros for quality service and standby power expertise.

“We are very pleased to say that we have the highest and most reviews of any company on the eastern seaboard. We just focus on honesty, kindness and advertising integrity, and unlike others, we have never paid for our reviews” says owner Craig Shepp.

Besides homes, the company has installed backup generators at countless area fire departments, police stations, nursing facilities, businesses where electrical service is not just a convenience – but a necessity. Systems are now seeing lifespans of around 20 years. Today’s systems can now be monitored anywhere in the world right from your cellphone. Thus, a very wise investment for anyone.

To assist you with making the right standby power investment, we strongly advise you to consult with the GeneratorPros at Shepp Electric Company, Inc., who will conduct a free site survey and electrical load analysis in order to recommend the best size and placement of the system, whether home or business. Contact them before the next disaster Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 877423-9010, or visit their website at GeneratorPros.com

to view information about all of their services and GENERAC Generator Systems.

Business owners especially are very concerned about loss. Craig notes: “Compared to the expense of lost revenue and inventory spoilage, an automatic standby genset is a bargain that will provide years of reliable service. It is truly a smart investment for home or business. You don’t have to live without power. While power storage cell technology is the next frontier of which we are now pioneering, standby generators are not going away.”

AC Plumbing, Heating and Mechanical

AC Plumbing, Heating & Mechanical is a family-owned business that started over 45 years ago in our father’s garage. Since then, we’ve continued his legacy by providing expert plumbing and HVAC service to families across our community. Raised in Beachwood, we take great pride in supporting the neighborhoods we grew up in – and being the team our neighbors trust when temperatures drop.

Winter in Northeast Ohio can be unpredictable, and your home’s systems take the brunt of it. Heating equipment works overtime, older pipes are more prone to freezing, and even small plumbing or HVAC issues can quickly turn into major problems once the cold sets in. A winter preventative maintenance visit ensures your furnace is operating safely and efficiently, your plumbing is insulated and protected, and

automatically during snow and ice, keeping your driveway clear – without shoveling, salting, or waiting for a plow. Installing now helps ensure a safer, more convenient winter for your family. As a new season begins, our goal remains the same: to keep your home comfortable, protected, and running smoothly when you need it most. Whether it’s a heating inspection, plumbing check-up, or planning ahead with an ice-melt system, AC Plumbing, Heating & Mechanical is here to help. We look forward to serving you this winter and for many years to come.

ENTREPRENEURS LAUNCH NEW MINI-BAR

The fun-sized milk chocolate treat is packed with peanut butter crunch

Serial entrepreneurs Melanie and Toby Maloney of Novelty are fulfilling a lifelong dream with the launch of the toby bar – bringing to market a perfect-sized crunchy peanut butter treat for chocolate lovers.

The couple describes their two-bite-sized creation as “pure delight in every bite,” with its creamy milk chocolate coating and crunchy peanut butter center. The mini-bar is available online at tobybar.com and at local retailers including Sweet Designs, Patterson Fruit Farm and Lemon Falls.

A portion of the proceeds from each sale will benefit Airedale Terrier Rescue and Adoption (ATRA), a nonprofit organization the married couple has long supported. (airerescue.org)

“We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to make people happy with our snack,” Toby and Melanie say. “And it also gives us a chance to give back to a charity we’ve long admired.”

The toby bar is Ohio proud.

“We’ve lived in Northeast Ohio for nearly 30 years,” the Maloneys say. “We love it here and are happy to support the local economy. We’ve worked with Ines Rehner of Sweet Designs

Chocolatier in Lakewood to test and perfect the concept. We’re using Giannios Candy Company of Struthers, OH, which has been in business since 1910, as our manufacturer. We’re also using Solon and Twinsburg-based-suppliers for our packaging. In the coming months, we look forward to building our retail presence in Ohio.”

The couple’s initial geographic focus will be close to home along with an online presence. They are preparing to orchestrate a nationwide rollout in early 2027. “If people enjoy the toby bar as much as we do, we’ll be ready and eager to scale,” Melanie says.

For more information, contact Toby or Melanie at 440-666-9705 or at info@tobybar.com.

THE POWER OF ROUTINE IN DEMENTIA CARE

If you love someone living with dementia, you know that structure can be the calm in the storm. Predictable routines—meals at the same time, favorite TV shows, bedtime rituals – offer comfort when the world starts to feel confusing.

Routine gives the brain a rhythm to follow. It reduces anxiety, builds trust, and helps loved ones feel safe. A familiar morning greeting or a favorite song can turn a challenging moment into one filled with peace. These consistent cues create stability and allow individuals with dementia to feel more grounded in their day.

For families, building these routines takes patience, creativityand often teamwork. It might mean labeling drawers, keeping a daily calendar, or using scent and sound to signal familiar moments. Over time, those small acts become powerful tools for communication and reassurance.

Professional caregivers trained in memory care understand how to blend compassion with consistency. They know that what matters most isn’t perfection – it’s presence. By gently guiding daily activities and honoring personal preferences, they

help each day unfold with dignity and purpose. At Home Instead, our caregivers are specially trained in Alzheimer’s and dementia care, helping families build routines that bring calm, comfort and connection back into everyday life. Because even when memories fade, the feelings of love, safety and belonging remain strong and that’s where care truly lives.

Diner relocates, renovates with help of friend’s construction company

Waffles, french toast, eggs and coffee are hot and ready to be served up by the Fromson family at the newly relocated and renovated Washington Street Diner in Bainbridge Township that opened on Oct. 13 –a relocation process that they found out is not as over-easy as the eggs they serve.

Now located at 8580 E. Washington St. in Bainbridge Township just down the road from its previous location at 8233 E. Washington St., the newly remodeled diner offers familiar menu items that customers can enjoy in a space that allows for efficiency and offers a shift in atmosphere from its previous location.

Dan Fromson, owner of Washington Street Diner for nearly two decades, told the Cleveland Jewish News that limited kitchen space, an outdated design and a potholefilled parking lot were all reasons behind the move – a move that he had been looking to make for years.

Knowing that a remodel would mean closing for months, Fromson opted to purchase a new space just down the road so that his family business could still operate during the four-month renovation process of the new space.

“It had seen better days,” Fromson said of the old location. “The new kitchen is much

bigger, which allows us to be much more efficient and that’s really what the move was for, but now, we also have a patio for the summer.”

In addition to more square footage, the main difference between the spaces, Fromson said, lies mainly in the aesthetic of the interior.

The old diner’s design had a retro feel of a classic, old-fashioned diner, he said. Now, the new space takes a modern twist on the cozy comfort food aspect of a diner with wooden accents and handmade pieces made by an Amish furniture maker.

“The diner just kind of evolved,” Fromson said. “I originally thought that when we moved, it would look just like the old diner but in a new space. It turned out to be way different and way more involved than I thought.”

To streamline the construction process, Fromson collaborated with Rodney Simon, longtime friend and owner of Simcon Custom Homes. Primarily in the business of residential construction projects, Simon told the CJN that he was happy to take on this project for his friend of three decades as his first job in the restaurant industry.

“Working with a close friend can sometimes be challenging, but this process was very smooth,” Simon, owner of the family business for over 35 years, said. “We had an open line of communication with daily meetings and talks, and Dan, the owner, was very open to all the suggestions that myself or any of my subtrades made.”

With construction beginning in June and being completed in September, the fourmonth process consisted of collaborating with Simon’s team of tradesmen, architects and interior designer Sarah Ridolfi.

“The three of us collaborated during construction on design details and cost efficiency to make sure that everything worked and fit within our budget and timeline,” Simon, a resident of Orange, said. “Then when construction was done, we had about one week of downtime between closing up the old Washington Street Diner to opening up the new Washington Street Diner.”

Calling the new diner a “wonderful place” for families, Simon said that with the completion of this project under his toolbelt, he is open to doing more construction

projects with restaurants in the future. With the collaboration of these two familyowned businesses completed, Fromson and his two sons are hard at work in their new space and ready to serve the community with sandwiches, burgers, breakfast and eggs, which Fromson said can be served “basically any way you want them.”

Washington Street Diner is open daily for breakfast and lunch from 7:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
