HOME IMPROVEMENT
Now’s the time to plan for spring, summer renovation
SHANNON MORTLAND
During these dreary winter days, many people start thinking about how they are going to renovate their homes and start fresh in the spring and summer with a new look and feel.
For those who need inspiration, there are plenty of remodeling trends to consider.
When it comes to ooring, luxury vinyl plank is the favorite right now, according to Austin Calvetta, co-owner of Calvetta Brothers Floor Show with locations in Bedford Heights, North eld, Mentor, Westlake and Bath Township.
“People like it because it’s practical for pets and kids,” he said of the product’s attribute. “It’s scratch resistant, budgetfriendly, user-friendly, waterproof and can be installed over existing ooring.” Luxury vinyl plank ooring is also a ordable and easily repaired if something happens to a board, he added.
Lighting can also easily change the look of a room without costing a lot, according to Mark Dymidowski, president of House of Lights in May eld Heights.
Black and gold tones, as well as mixing the two together, are still very popular, he said, as are clean lines.
For customers who don’t know what they want, Calvetta and Dymidowski said there are knowledgeable people in

their showrooms who can help them gure it out.
Likewise at Perrino Builders and Remodeling in Chester Township, said President Pat Perrino, though nearly everyone who contacts him knows exactly what they want.
“About 99% of those who come in know what they want,” he said. “We’re not dealing with men anymore; we’re dealing with women. ese women are on Pinterest, Houzz, they’ve gotten ideas from their friends.”
Perrino said women are looking to brighten their homes with a lot of windows providing natural light. People are asking for two-toned kitchens, stained cabinets and crown molding, and they’re merging old ideas with new trends. It’s a style he calls “eclectic plus.”
Calvetta said ooring is trending lighter as well, with darker colors now obsolete.
Backsplashes are also being updated as a way to change the look of a kitchen without spending a lot of money, he said.
Regardless of whether people know what they want, they should come to a showroom with some basic information about the room and what they are envisioning.
Dymidowski advised those coming into House of Lights to know their ceiling height and bring a picture of the area where they are installing new lighting. e designers in the showroom will help them nd what they want within their budget, he said.
Calvetta said clients should bring basic measurements of the room and some pictures of things they like. Designers will help customers nd the right products.
“Our designers will design the whole room with the furniture in it,” Perrino said. “It’s a big di erence when you build a house and furnish it up front. Everything is built around the lighting and the artwork. at whole picture is put together by our team and the customer.”

Curb appeal can help put your signature on a home
SHANNON MORTLAND
It might be di cult to picture when there is snow on the ground, but spring is on the way, and now is the time to start thinking about how to enhance the curb appeal of your home.
Start by asking some basic questions to know where to start, according to Daniel Peck, owner of Painting Solutions in Chardon and Ocala, Fla.
Does the home look welcoming or worn down? Is the front porch clutter free and neat? Is the siding in good condition? Is the outside of the home dirty? Does it have peeling paint or mildew? Is the driveway stained?
“A house’s exterior is important, especially if you’re selling or having it appraised,” Peck said. “A lot of people would be pleasantly surprised of the impact you can make for not a large investment. It helps the sale. It does add value.”

“A house’s exterior is important, especially if you’re selling or having it appraised. A lot of people would be pleasantly surprised of the impact you can make for not a large investment. It helps the sale. It does add value.”
Ninety-eight percent of Realtors said they believe curb appeal is important to a potential homebuyer, according to a 2023 report by the National Association of Realtors.
For the best outcome, Peck advised to start with a new coat of paint and power wash the driveway to give it a fresh look.
Light xtures should be clean and accent the home, rotting wood should be replaced and areas harboring mildew should be treated.
Heidi ONeill, Realtor and landscape architect at ONeill Landscape Design and installation LLC in Russell Township, said the front of the home, including its front door and walkway, create a rst impression to a potential buyer, and bad rst impressions can be hard to overcome. “ e front walk is very important,” she said. “It should ideally give you a clear view of the front door the entire distance. It should also be far enough away from the foundation – to proportionately allow for the planting bed to be in scale with the height of the house.”
Once the snow melts, landscaping
should be addressed. Lawns and shrubs should be manicured and not overgrown. Sidewalk and porch cracks should be free of weeds. Crisp, straight lines can make a huge di erence, Peck said.
“Once this is all done, it’s easier to maintain,” he said. “It gets more expensive if you let it go, so don’t let it get away from you.”
Despite the cold, long winters in Northeast Ohio, many plants that can withstand the elements, according to ONeill.
Evergreens should play a large role in a landscaping plan and colorful plants should be used in the front yard because people will see those from a distance, she added.
Flowering plants can often lose their
owers after about two weeks, so it’s important for homeowners to pay attention to the leaves on each particular plant, according to ONeill.
“It’s popular right now to have some seating in the front yard,” she said. “Create a place to have your co ee in the morning or have a drink at night. It can give you a di erent view than your backyard.”
Making curb appeal a priority pays o , ONeill and Peck both agreed.
“ e outside of your home and the way you keep the inside of your vehicle are a re ection of yourself,” Peck said.

When water damage strikes, response time matters
ELLEN BRAUNSTEIN
When winter loosens its grip and the snow begins to melt, many homeowners discover that cold weather has quietly damaged their basements.

Jim Rusk, owner of USA Waterproofing Inc. in Twinsburg, which specializes exclusively in residential basements, said spring is when the effects of winter’s freeze-and-thaw cycle become most visible.
“One of the most common things we see are cracks in the foundation, cracks in the floor and cracks in the walls,” Rusk said. “Water gets into those cracks, it freezes, and every year that crack can get just a little bit bigger. Eventually, that lets water into the basement.”
During winter, frozen ground limits how much water can move through the soil. Once temperatures rise, thawing ground allows moisture to collect around foundations and seep through weakened areas.
“When the ground starts to thaw out, that lets more water around the foundation,” Rusk said. “That water finds its way into those tiny cracks and makes the walls and floors wet.”
The most urgent warning sign is water collecting on the basement floor. He said that often indicates groundwater pushing up through what contractors call the “cove area,” the
joint where the basement wall meets the floor.
“At first, you may see dampness on the walls,” he said. “But once you start seeing water on the floor, that tells you there’s an opening letting water in.”
Delaying repairs can lead to escalating damage. Moisture can harm stored belongings and appliances and create conditions for mold growth.
“If homeowners delay repairs, the water just keeps coming in,” Rusk said. “Wood framing can be damaged, washers and dryers can rust on the bottom, and anything stored down there that’s paper or fabric can start growing mold.”
In more extreme cases, long-term neglect can lead to structural problems.
“We’ve seen walls crack and start to push inward,” Rusk said. “In some cases, tree roots grow into those cracks. I’ve even seen situations where the wall pushed right onto the basement floor.”
Rusk recommended that homeowners inspect their basements as soon as snow melts and spring rain begins.
“Spend time down there,” he said. “Look closely at the walls and the floor for any dampness or visible cracks.”
Preventing water from reaching the foundation is equally important. Rusk advised homeowners to check gutters and downspouts to make sure rainwater is being carried away from the house.
“If water spills over the gutter and runs right down against the foundation, that’s going to find its way into those
cracks,” he said. “You also want the ground around the house pitched away so water runs into the yard instead of back toward the foundation.”
Older homes are especially vulnerable because waterproof coatings and drainage systems deteriorate over time.
“Foundations settle, coatings wear down and older drain tiles made of clay can crack,” Rusk said. “Tree roots and debris can clog those lines and keep water from draining properly.”
Insurance coverage for basement water damage is limited. Rusk said most standard homeowners policies do not cover groundwater intrusion unless homeowners have specific flood or drain backup coverage.
Repair costs vary widely depending on the severity of the damage. Minor waterproofing may cost a few thousand dollars, while major structural repairs can be far more expensive.
“Basement waterproofing can run anywhere from a couple thousand dollars up to $10,000 or $15,000,” Rusk said. “If walls need to be rebuilt, you’re looking at $20,000 to $30,000.”
His advice to homeowners is to take early signs seriously.
“Cracks and dampness don’t fix themselves,” Rusk said. “Every year they get a little worse. The sooner you address them, the less damage and cost you’ll face down the road.”

Cold weather puts focus on heating system maintenance
SHANNON MORTLAND
The ever-changing weather in Ohio can lead to extreme hot and cold temperatures, which can spark issues with ventilation in the home. Planning ahead can help homeowners avoid lasting repercussions.
Among the biggest problems is malfunctioning equipment due to a lack of fresh air, according to Steven Smylie, owner of Smylie One in Bedford Heights.
“When it gets really cold outside and we get a lot of snow, there are a lot of houses that are locked up and they don’t get enough fresh, outside air into the houses,” he said. “Fresh outside air is a good thing. It’s a necessity for furnaces and water heaters to work right.”
All fossil-burning appliances need fresh air to work properly, including wood- or gasburning fireplaces and stoves, Smylie said. For example, if an attic is not ventilated well and kept at a cold enough temperature, the snow on the roof starts to melt and has no place to go, he said. The snow then forms ice dams, which push under the roofing materials and get into the house, he said.
An attic should be similar in temperature to the air outside and it should have ventilation, such as through vents or an attic fan, to ensure proper air flow, Smylie said.
When moisture builds on windows and walls, it is a sign that there is not enough fresh air in the home, he said.
This problem became more prevalent following the COVID-19 pandemic, when people began staying indoors more often and working from home, and therefore leaving the house a lot less, Smylie said.
In addition to protecting the health of the home, fresh air is good for people. Items in the home expel off-gasses, he said, which taint the air.
“Dilution is the solution,” Smylie said. For most people, simply going in and out of the house several times a day will let enough fresh air into the home, he said. Those who leave the house less often should be more conscious about air ventilation, he said.
“Crack a basement window a quarter of an inch,” Smylie said. “Open a door every once in a while and let some fresh air into the house.”
It could also be worthwhile to invest in an
energy recovery ventilator or a skuttle, which attaches to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system and brings fresh air into the house when the fan turns on, he said.
Other good practices include making sure ventilation pipes are not covered in snow, change the filters and check to make sure the heating system is working before you need it. And while conventional wisdom says to turn down the thermostat at night to conserve energy, Smylie advised against it.
“The run time to get back to the higher temperature the next morning will offset any

savings and the furnace has to work harder to catch back up,” he said.
He also suggested having the furnace serviced in the offseason.
“We’re in Ohio, we need to be aware that extreme weather happens,” Smylie said. “As long as you plan ahead and have your system serviced ahead of time, the odds of not having heat when it’s cold out are less.”

Great Lakes Home Remodeling
A DIFFERENT WAY TO BUILD A HOME IMPROVEMENT COMPANY
Great Lakes Home Remodeling was built from experience and from a belief that homeowners deserve better.
Across the Midwest, many have watched the home improvement industry change. Small, family run companies have been pushed aside by large, Wall Street backed corporations that prioritize rapid growth and shareholder returns. Too often, that shift has come with inflated pricing, aggressive sales tactics, and a decline in craftsmanship and accountability. The focus moved away from people and toward profit margins.
Great Lakes Home Remodeling was founded as a response to that shift.
The guiding principle was simple. Do honest work, deliver exceptional quality and treat people fairly. In Jewish tradition, there is a deep emphasis on responsibility, ethical conduct and doing what is right even when no one is watching. Those values are not slogans. They are standards. Great Lakes was built on that same foundation.
From the beginning, the homeowner has come first. Every project is approached with care and intention, because a home is more than a structure. It is where family gathers, where traditions are passed down and where life’s most meaningful moments take place. Treating a home with respect is not just good business. It is a responsibility.
Today, Great Lakes Home Remodeling serves homeowners across Ohio, Michigan and Indiana, providing exterior solutions designed to protect, enhance and endure. Services include roofing, siding, windows and doors, all selected with durability, performance and long term value in mind. Materials such as stone coated metal roofing, insulated siding, architectural fiberglass shingles and energy efficient replacement windows are chosen because they align with a commitment to long lasting quality rather than short term gain.
Every member of the team is fully licensed, highly trained and committed to doing the job the right way. Craftsmanship matters. Attention to detail matters. Accountability matters. In Jewish teaching, work is meant to be done with care and dignity. That belief shows up on every job site.
Home improvement is a major investment, and it should be guided by transparency and trust. Flexible financing options and clear communication help

families make informed decisions without pressure or gimmicks. Fairness and honesty are not optional. They are expected.
At its core, Great Lakes Home Remodeling operates with a sense of stewardship. The homes worked on today are meant to serve families for generations. Exteriors are designed to be energy efficient, low maintenance and built to withstand the Midwest’s toughest weather because reliability is not a luxury. It is a responsibility to the people who live beneath those roofs.
One of the most distinctive offerings is stone coated metal roofing, often described as the last roof a homeowner will ever need. It delivers the elevated look of cedar shake, clay tile or architectural shingles combined with the strength of precision engineered steel. Each panel is carefully stamped, coated and finished with high definition stone granules that provide rich texture and long lasting color without the upkeep or limitations of traditional materials.
Beneath the beauty is strength. Corrosion resistant steel, advanced protective coatings and strict quality controls ensure long term performance against impact, extreme weatherand time itself. It is a system designed not just to last, but to honor the responsibility of protecting a home and everyone inside it.
Great Lakes Home Remodeling is not focused on being the biggest company in the market. The focus is on being the most trusted. Success is measured by integrity, by keeping one’s word and by building something meaningful one home, one familyand one community at a time.

Generator Pros
A
POWERFUL, AFFORDABLE
SOLUTION FOR HOMES AND BUSINESSES – AUTOMATIC STANDBY GENERATORS
Recent developments surrounding weather patterns and old electrical grid have created a renewed awareness that our electrical service is very fragile. It will continue to be a way of life.
What is your back-up plan? When electricity is down, it can take hours or days for it to be restored – in spite of the diligent efforts of utility workers. We cannot tame the weather, but the GeneratorPros at Shepp Electric Co. can help to ensure that you are safe, warm and still in business no matter what unlikely disasters will occur.
There is never a lack of demand for the sorts of GENERAC generators that Shepp Electric provides –a fact that has helped the company thrive for over 30 years now. “We are a family business with family values! In fact, we are the only family-owned and -operated generator company on the North Coast. We cover all of Northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania,” Craig said, and this is one Geauga County businessman who racks up the mileage to show it. “We literally install two systems every day.” Unlike any other company around, this is all they do. They are totally devoted to standby power, and this is why they are the area’s leading GENERAC
“Premier” warranty dealer and installer. With over 6,000 systems installed and serviced, hundreds have benefited from the GeneratorPros for quality service and standby power expertise.
“We are very pleased to say that we have the highest and most reviews of any company on the eastern seaboard. We just focus on honesty, kindness and advertising integrity, and unlike others, we have never paid for our reviews” says owner Craig Shepp.
Besides homes, the company has installed backup generators at countless area fire departments, police stations, nursing facilities, businesses where electrical service is not just a convenience – but a necessity. Systems are now seeing lifespans of around 20 years. Today’s systems can now be monitored anywhere in the world right from your cellphone. Thus, a very wise investment for anyone.
To assist you with making the right standby power investment, we strongly advise you to consult with the GeneratorPros at Shepp Electric Company, Inc., who will conduct a free site survey and electrical load analysis in order to recommend the best size and placement of the system, whether home or business. Contact them before the next disaster Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 877-423-9010, or visit their website at GeneratorPros. com to view information about all of their services and GENERAC Generator Systems.
Business owners especially are very concerned about loss. Craig notes: “Compared to the expense of lost revenue and inventory spoilage, an automatic standby genset is a bargain that will provide years of reliable service. It is truly a smart investment for home or business. You don’t have to live without power. While power storage cell technology is the next frontier of which we are now pioneering, standby generators are not going away.”

Acme Fence
BUILT TO LAST: FOUR GENERATIONS OF ACME FENCE AND A COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY
Founded in 1939 by Harry Davidson, Acme Fence has quietly become part of the fabric of Northeast Ohio. For more than 85 years, the family-owned company has designed and installed durable, beautiful fencing for homes, businesses and organizations—earning a reputation built on craftsmanship, trustand consistency.
Today, Acme Fence is led by fourth-generation owner Donny Zigdon, who was born and raised in the Cleveland Jewish community and attended a local Jewish day school. Growing up, Donny learned that business was not only about providing a quality product, but about responsibility – to customers, employees and the broader community.
That philosophy continues to guide Acme Fence. The company remains committed to its core values of being safe, proud, proactive, collaborative and communicative, with a mission centered on creating peace of mind for every customer. Unlike many contractors, Acme Fence relies on a team of experienced local employees, not subcontractors, and continues to operate from the same Northeast Ohio location it has called home for decades. Donny’s commitment extends well beyond the business. He has been highly involved in the
Cleveland Jewish community, including serving as a former board member of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and participating on numerous other community boards. His leadership reflects a sense of communal responsibility deeply rooted in Jewish values and lived daily through service and involvement.
From securing backyards and businesses to strengthening community institutions, Acme Fence’s story is ultimately one of stewardship. As the company looks toward the future, it does so with the same guiding principle that has defined it for generations—building work that lasts, and doing so with integrity, pride and care for the community it serves.
