The Harrington Family proudly supports the mission of The Gathering Place. We are grateful for the strong leadership of its Board Members and Trustees. Thank you, Eileen, for the last twenty years of dedicated service. You are an inspiration to all! “Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly.” - Anonymous
Good evening everyone,
What a joy it is to be here with over 1,000 individuals that help make up The Gathering Place’s caring community. Thank you for joining us to celebrate 20 years of serving the community, recognizing the founding board members who helped to start The Gathering Place on its road to success and honoring our visionary, founder and CEO, Eileen Saffran. Congratulations Eileen Saffran for taking a dream and making it into an incredible reality. We wish you well in the next phase of your journey as you retire as CEO. So much has happened at The Gathering Place over our 20-year history; tens of thousands of individuals have been served and supported, impacting countless others. In 2004, we purchased our own building in Beachwood after renting space for our first few years of operation. In 2008, we opened a much-awaited location in Westlake and in 2017 moved into a larger space in Westlake located in the Tri-C Corporate College West building. In 2011, we opened a Wellness Center in Beachwood to provide exercise programs for individuals in treatment and post treatment, and have been co-investigators on research projects involving exercise and cancer with Case Western Reserve University. In addition to providing education for those going through a cancer diagnosis, we provide education for students pursuing health care professions including medicine, nursing, counseling and social work. The Gathering Place has received numerous awards and recognition for the innovative support and programming provided throughout these 20 years. Tonight is going to be a wonderful celebration and there are so many people responsible for helping us arrive at this point. Our immense gratitude to our gala committee, to the Harrington Family Foundation who are serving as the presenting sponsor for this evening’s gala and all the amazing sponsors, the wonderful staff, volunteers and board members of The Gathering Place and Jamie Belkin Productions and her team for a truly beautiful evening. Thank you all for helping us celebrate our legacy and sustain our future. We would not be where we are today without many of the people in this room. We are grateful for your support and continued commitment as we move forward into the next phase of The Gathering Place.

Dear Friends,
It is my honor as Board Chair to welcome you to this evening’s ExtravaGathering, the celebration of our 20th anniversary! Special thanks to our gala co-chairs Beth and Jim Cavoli, Niki and Brian Schaefer, Barrie Spang, and Bill Spang, as well as to every member of our Gala Committee and staff that worked tirelessly for over a year to ensure tonight remains memorable in so many ways. Over 20 years ago, Eileen Saffran had a vision to create a place where individuals, families, and loved ones could receive the support and resources they needed to cope with cancer’s impact in their lives, all completely free of charge. It was a groundbreaking idea then, and in many respects remains so today. Through tenacity, passion, and drive Eileen rallied our earliest pioneers to her noble cause. Tonight we honor Eileen and recognize our founding board members for the crown jewel that The Gathering Place has become, a caring community that has directly impacted the lives of nearly 47,000 people and countless others indirectly, here and throughout the world. Tonight the ballroom is filled with the bonds that exist between every Participant who has bravely walked through our doors in Beachwood and Westlake, and every staff member, volunteer, donor, or board member who have rallied to their side with the love, commitment, and skill needed to make a true difference in their life. There have been tremendous accomplishments in the history of our organization, but we know there is still so much more to be done. Even as Eileen has been preparing to pass the baton to the next generation of leadership, she has recognized the importance of taking programs and services outside of our healing homes and into the 21st century, ensuring accessibility for everyone regardless of where they are. Wellness Without Walls is TGP’s next chapter in the evolution of cancer care, which you will learn more about during this evening’s program. I look forward to our caring community here tonight and in the future, following the lead gift generously made by Karen Lipman Steiger, providing the financial resources necessary to launch and sustain this critical initiative. What better way to honor Eileen’s legacy, and to wish her well in her retirement! Have a wonderful time this evening celebrating all that The Gathering Place has meant, and will continue to mean, in the lives of those facing cancer and embracing life!
With warm regards, David Ostro

ince I announced to our Board my intention to transition out of my role as CEO two years ago, I have thought a great deal about the message I would share as my tenure ends. As you can imagine, it is an incredible challenge to share all the emotions I feel after this 22-year glorious journey of doing my life’s work. There is absolutely no way I can begin to express the depth of my appreciation nor identify all the people who have come together in a meaningful way to create and sustain The Gathering Place. As good fortune would have it, a few weeks ago Ron Harrington, one of our Founding Board members who remains a respected mentor and friend, suggested as my transition approaches, I read David Brooks’ recent book, Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life. Brooks explains that "first-mountain lives" focus on fulfilling one’s own needs, whereas "second-mountain lives" focus on being deeply rooted and deeply committed to making a difference outside oneself. I did not have to go any further than the introduction to realize that I have been incredibly fortunate to have lived what he describes as feeling joyous during my “first-mountain life.” This, in large part, is due to all I have experienced as the Founder and CEO of The Gathering Place. At the end of his introduction, the author shares his insight on being joyous as: "Happiness tends to be individual; we measure it by asking, “Are you happy?” Joy tends to be self-transcending. Happiness is something you pursue; joy is something that rises up unexpectedly and sweeps over you. Happiness comes from accomplishments; joy comes from offering gifts. Happiness fades; we get used to the things that used to make us happy; Joy doesn’t fade. To live with joy is to live with wonder, gratitude and hope." Although I will formally be leaving The Gathering Place in a few months, the joy I feel from creating and being a part of The Gathering Place’s caring community will live within me forever. I look forward to living with wonder, gratitude and hope. The wonder of exploration of what lies ahead; the immense gratitude for being able to fulfill a dream while impacting the lives of thousands of people touched by cancer; and the hope that the mission of The Gathering Place will continue to be supported. I thank you for joining us this evening to celebrate our 20 years of service to the community and invite you to help us sustain our future through your continued financial support. In fact, YOUR "second-mountain life" may be realized; enabling us to serve individuals and families through innovative programming both within and outside of our walls all provided free of charge.
With appreciation, Eileen Saffran

Sustain Our Future
The Gathering Place is excited to announce a new fund established to continue our innovative programming into the future, The Eileen Saffran Innovation Fund. This fund, named in honor of Founder and longtime CEO, Eileen Saffran, recognizes the innovative spirit she, and all staff and board leadership, have embraced from inception. The first initiative to launch from this fund will be Wellness Without Walls. This initiative will make the free programs and services The Gathering Place provides more accessible, located beyond our original “homes” and into the community closer to where people live. A cancer diagnosis does not discriminate with regards to one’s age, gender, race, religion or socio-economic status. We recognize and are sensitive to the fact that people have unique approaches to healing and coping. Serving people in their own community can provide greater comfort and ease at a most challenging time in their lives. As the number of people living with and affected by a cancer diagnosis increases, we recognize that there are more ways to complete the circle of care. The Gathering Place will continue to welcome people into our “homes’ while our next vision will move us outside of our walls and into a variety of community settings while also using technology to help us fulfill our mission. The Gathering Place is grateful to Karen Lipman Steiger for her lead gift of $250,000 to Wellness Without Walls. Karen has been volunteering at The Gathering Place since 2018 and her mother, Sandra Lipman, was a longtime supporter of The Gathering Place. Karen’s generous gift is made in memory of her parents, Sandy and Paul Lipman, and her sister, Susan Lipman. We invite you to Raise Your Paddle to help us move outside of our walls and into the community. We invite you to help us sustain our future. You, too, can make a difference in the lives of people touched by cancer.

Sheri ’s Butterfly
When Sheri Grossman was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2002, her daughter, Jenny, gave her a beautiful card with these motivational words: Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly. For the next 5½ years, Sheri lived each day fully alive. She was tenacious, embracing each day with joy, energy, strength and an inner glow that inspired all whose lives she touched. Sheri was an active volunteer at The Gathering Place providing a warm and genuine hello to anyone who walked in the door as a front desk volunteer and helped Norma’s Garden maintain its beauty by pulling weeds and watering its flowers. Additionally, Ned, Sheri’s husband, was a former Board Member and he and Sheri were donors prior to her cancer diagnosis. At your table you will find a “Sheri’s Butterfly." Please look under your bread plate to find out if you are the fortunate one to leave our event with this keepsake. You may decide to keep it for yourself or give it to someone facing a challenge that could use a dose of inspiration and hope. Sheri would have done that. Ned donated all our gala butterflies. Should you be interested in purchasing others, you may do so at www.sherisbutterfly.com. The Gathering Place receives a portion of the proceeds of all sales so we can continue to provide hope and healing to anyone currently coping with the impact of a cancer diagnosis.

Celebrate Our Legacy
I share, with gratitude, my earliest recollection about each Founding Board Member. I thank them for the hope they have given and positive impact they have made for thousands of people touched by cancer in our community. Their willingness to take a leap of faith contributing their time, talent and treasure will forever be remembered deep in my heart. -Eileen Saffran
Terry Adelman When I met Terry at the Cleveland Racquet Club for lunch I knew that she had years of experience helping nonprofits successfully fundraise. After sharing my vision with her, Terry offered to provide her wisdom, share her relationships and lend her energy to help our organization get started. From day one, Terry understood the importance of stepping up to the plate.
Jack Bialosky, Jr. While performing in "Fiddler on the Roof" at the Jewish Community Center, I shared my vision to meet the needs of people touched by cancer to one of the show’s leads, Keith Gerchak. Keith was an architect with Bialosky Partners at the time, and when hearing what I was hoping to do, encouraged me to speak with his “boss.” I met Jack in his office to ask his advice about a potential buildout in some rental space we had identified. Before the end of the conversation, after hearing about his extensive nonprofit board leadership experience, I asked if he would consider taking a Board position. Jack brought his intelligence, expertise and friendship.
Ellen Casper I knew that Ellen would lend her mental health professional’s lens as we were laying the groundwork for The Gathering Place. I met Ellen in her office to share the needs I was hoping we could meet for those touched by cancer. Years of counseling experience coupled with her humanistic approach to life were immediate assets as a lay leader. Ellen’s deep commitment to and understanding of the role mental stability plays in maintaining holistic well-being was a benefit as we designed our programming.
Charles Deutchman I met Charles through another fellow actor while I was in "Fiddler on the Roof," his bride-to-be, Sharon. Sharon and I engaged in many conversations about my dream of starting a cancer support center. She suggested I talk to Charles about the fundamentals needed for the financial aspect of a business plan, as he was well known as a business “turn-around” expert. Ivt was clear from our initial conversation that Charles would be a tremendous asset in this early phase due to his finance expertise and many years of leadership roles in a variety of nonprofits in the Cleveland area.

Diane Galvin I began moving my dream into reality while working both in the Department of Family Medicine at UH and in a private counseling practice. I had little or no time to take care of all the administrative needs necessary to start a nonprofit. Diane, as my best friend, knew of my vision long before I began to put “pen to paper.” Working fulltime as a physical therapist by day, she came to my home office after work in the evenings to assist with the “nuts and bolts” necessary to build a nonprofit from scratch. Additionally she understood the importance of the non-medical needs presented by a cancer diagnosis having witnessed my parents’ journey and was deeply committed to the mission. Diane joined our Board to combine her passion for the mission with her years of experience in the healthcare arena.
Peter Galvin Whenever I would mention needing to find a space for this new nonprofit I was starting, multiple people suggested I contact Peter. Although I reached out to Peter for his real estate guidance. I learned Peter had an abundance of wisdom about many more issues; most importantly what makes nonprofits successful. And it is more than simply where to locate. Not only did he find our first healing home to rent and held my hand through the legalities of signing on the dotted line, he passionately introduced me to his personal and professional world while taking a leadership role on our Board.
Nancy and Ron Harrington In the beginning of our grassroots movement, we held our community meetings once a month. Each month I would update attendees on significant contacts made, funds raised and our need to introduce me to anyone they felt might be interested in hearing about my vision. Diana Simsic, a social worker at UH at the time, approached me after the meeting to tell me about a family she met while working as a veterinary assistant in Hudson. She said that the Harringtons were terrific people who perhaps would be interested in what we were trying to achieve. Following up on her suggestion, I contacted Ron and Nancy. We sat in Ron’s office at Edgepark Surgical and talked about the gap in programs and services for people on a cancer journey and how we were striving to meet those needs. Even though cancer had never touched their lives personally, both Ron and Nancy said, “How can we help?” Their “help” started with hosting a party in their home, getting their employee “family” involved in various fundraising activities and personally reaching deep in their pockets to provide financial support needed to launch the organization. Additionally both of them agreed to join our Board to lend their business acumen, entrepreneurial spirit with their genuine concern and care for those in need.
Allen Hart Allen’s wife, Nancy, was the best friend of Mary Fisher Bornstein, a member of our clinical staff. Nancy died from Myeloma within 16 months of her diagnosis. Mary, attending the community meetings we were holding on a monthly basis, suggested I contact Allen to see if he might be interested in supporting our cause. During lunch with Allen, I learned about the challenging journey he traveled with his wife. Allen was very articulate about his experience with the healthcare system and was able to identify what gaps in the system The Gathering Place was trying to fill. He pledged his support and offered to join our Board to provide his entrepreneurial-style leadership.

Clem Hearey Around Thanksgiving, November 1998, the 26-part series in The Plain Dealer entitled “Losing Lisa” ended. The series chronicled Lisa Hearey’s end-of-life journey including her family’s powerful experience under the loving care of Hospice of the Western Reserve. The series painfully highlighted several of the family’s unmet needs from diagnosis to death. It pointed out some of the deficiencies in the health care system, as it existed then. I sent a letter to Clem sharing my vision with plans to fill many of the gaps identified in the series. I invited him to attend our next community meeting and as they say, “the rest is history.” Clem became deeply involved as a lay leader lending his personal lens as well as his expertise as a human resource professional.
Ken Levine The Gathering Place was founded using sound business practices. Appreciating that I knew little or nothing about nonprofit accounting rules and policies, I sought to identify a seasoned accountant who may have an interest in helping set this organization on firm footing in this area. Ken’s name came up in one of my conversations sighting his extensive work with other nonprofits in the community. We met for coffee and based on that conversation it was clear that Ken had a wealth of knowledge about the nonprofit sector relating to accounting practices. He agreed to join our Board lending his expertise and leadership skills. I gave Ken a loving nickname of “thorny” due to his consistent questions and oversight that thankfully became a thorn in my side to the advantage of our organization.
Lissa McKinley* On a sunny August morning in 1998, I met Lissa at Brueggers in Cleveland Heights. I was encouraged to meet with Lissa for a few reasons. She was a physician, researcher and had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Listening intently to my vision, Lissa began to cry. She was deeply touched by what I was saying, feeling deep in her soul the commitment to meeting unmet needs for people on a cancer journey. Lissa agreed to be one of the three original signers for all our legal documents needed to start The Gathering Place. Afterward, she joined our Board and wore a lens that no one else had. Lissa lived life to the fullest writing poetry until her death in November 2013. These words from her obituary help describe who Lissa was: Her long, personal engagement with cancer informed her evolving sense of empathy in medicine and encouraged her “to teach and model humanism in patient care,” particularly of cancer patients. She spoke nationally and internationally on these subjects, helped to create a curriculum reflecting humanism at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine as well as at The Gathering Place.
16
Ruth Miller* Known to those familiar to her as “Ruthie,” Ruthie was my partner in our private practice for a decade. The practice focused on chronic illness and the family. Her interest in this focus was borne out of her experience years before as she accompanied her sister on her cancer journey from diagnosis to death. There was absolutely no one who did not like Ruthie Miller. She was a kind and gentle woman whose smile permeated a room. Ruthie agreed to join our Board to bring her professional expertise as well as serve as an ambassador and connector within her personal community. Her late husband, Allen and she became major donors and helped fund a myriad of initiatives. Ruthie died in August 2019 and remained interested in our work up until the end of her life.
Sylvia Morrison Communication and marketing were key areas of need as The Gathering Place began to form and blossom. I knew Sylvia from our college years at The Ohio State University. Sylvia was working as an administrator in communications at the Cleveland Clinic and began giving me guidance and assistance in “crafting and delivering” the message. It was clear that she, as a lay leader could fill a niche for our organization. She agreed to join our Board to help spread the word near and far.
John Parker Connecting the dots through relationships brought John and I together. As an attorney with BakerHostetler, John was a close friend and colleague of Pat Jordan, who died of Melanoma a few years prior to the founding of The Gathering Place. Sharon Sobol Jordan, Pat’s widow, suggested I contact John to provide information about my vision. It was immediately evident that John’s legal expertise along with his years of nonprofit Board service would make him a wonderful addition to our Board. Having lived through his friend Pat’s journey, John agreed to bring whatever he could to help lay the groundwork for our organization.
Elizabeth Pitorak I developed a relationship with Elizabeth through my work at University Hospitals as well as through my family’s personal journey. My father’s end-of-life care was provided by Hospice of the Western Reserve. Elizabeth, a nurse by training, was instrumental in starting the Lake County Hospice, which became Hospice of the Western Reserve. Because Elizabeth was a leader in the end-of-life field, I reached out to share my vision with her. At the time, she was the Director of the Hospice Institute, which promoted excellence in end-of-life care through knowledge, education and research. When we met in August 1998, Elizabeth shared that she was a breast cancer survivor and had been a caregiver for her mother who died of cancer. All of her personal and professional experiences and expertise provided valuable input to our holistic approach to care. Along with Lissa McKinley, she agreed to be one of the three signers on legal documents. Additionally, Elizabeth agreed to bring her knowledge and experience in a nonprofit leadership role to our Board.
17
Brian Ratner The Ratner family has had a long history of philanthropy in the Greater Cleveland area and they are well known as leaders and donors within the nonprofit community. The Jewish values of “tzedukah” (charity) and “tikkun olam” (any activity that improves the world, bringing it closer to the harmonious state for which it was created) were deeply rooted in the family for generations. Furthermore, the unparalled business acumen of the executive team within Forest City was known throughout the community-at-large. Additionally, the Ratner family had lived through many cancer journeys within the family losing several beloved members to the disease. A number of our early stakeholders had long-standing relationships with various members of the Ratner family and several reached out asking if someone would be interested in getting involved with the early creation of our organization. Brian offered to bring his business acumen, corporate experience and commitment to our mission joining our Board early on.
Laura Rocker Laura lost her sister, Debbie, to colon cancer and when she heard about my vision, she reached out to see how she could help. As a psychiatrist, Laura had years of experience working with people needing counseling therapy in conjunction with pharmaceutical intervention. Through both her personal and professional journey, Laura recognized that there was much more that could be helpful than simply traditional therapies. As a longstanding Clevelander with a family deeply rooted and involved in the community, she joined our Board introducing her professional and personal worlds to our mission.
Norton Rose* Ellen Heyman, our founding Program Director, and I went to meet Norton at his office. Norton had previously held a number of high level executive positions in several corporations based in the Cleveland area and was one of those people whose Rolodex’s was gold. He pulled no punches and if he believed in something, he jumped in “hook, line and sinker.” Fortunately, he believed in my vision and our plans to start The Gathering Place. While in his office, Norton picked up the phone and arranged for us to meet with two other business leaders who he felt could help move our agenda forward. Furthermore, Norton agreed to join our Board bringing his wit and wisdom with him. There was absolutely no one who could tell a story like Norton and I, for one, never tired of listening.
Debbie Rossman I must have spoken with literally hundreds upon hundreds of people and groups to share my vision inviting them to join in the movement to start The Gathering Place. In early 1999, I had the pleasure of attending a meeting of the Mt. Sinai Community Partners (MSCP) Executive Committee at Beth Curtiss’s house. MSCP was formed after Mt. Sinai Hospital closed. They were originally the auxiliary for the hospital and continued volunteering and raising funds to support health-related causes in the community. Debbie was the Chair of MSCP at the time I met with them. They held the first large fundraiser at Moxie for The Gathering Place to raise funds and awareness about our mission. Under Debbie’s leadership, the group made a capital gift to name the library in our new healing home in Beachwood. Furthermore, Debbie joined our Board to provide leadership and represent MSCP as we were opening to serve. In 2002, MSCP ceased to exist and The Gathering Place was given a generous “Legacy Gift” of cash as well as endowed funds housed at the Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation that continues to provide annual funds to update and expand our libraries.

Margo Roth Ellen Heyman, by my side almost from the time I started putting pen to paper to start The Gathering Place, was a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at University Hospitals when this journey began. Ellen, a longtime Cleveland resident, knew multitudes of people who eventually became significant stakeholders and volunteers. Ellen, in her role as a nurse practitioner, had become closely involved with one of her childhood friends. Margo and Bob’s son, Grant, had recently been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Ellen was on the journey with them. We arranged to meet Margo in one of the hospital’s lobbies to provide her with information about our endeavor. Margo rushed in wearing her iconic high top Converse athletic shoes having forgotten about our meeting until Ellen called to remind her. I have yet to meet anyone who does not adore Margo. Her authenticity and genuine concern about everyone’s well-being attracted a large community of people to learn about and support our mission. Margo and Bob hosted a magnificent party in their home to introduce my vision to their world and as they say, it was full speed ahead from there. Margo agreed to join our Board and with some arm-twisting, stepped into the significant leadership role as our Founding Board Chair. Margo’s beauty shines, both inside and out. I am so grateful that she continues to be deeply engaged in helping us fulfill our mission.
Ernie Siegler* I met two of the most beloved people, Norma and Ernie, when I was on the Board of the Jewish Community Center. We went on a bus to see some new facilities at Camp Wise and I started telling them about my plan to start an organization to focus on the non-medical needs of a cancer journey. Norma shared that she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer several months before and was feeling hopeful about the future. They immediately, however, understood how challenging the journey could be and were very interested to learn how they could help. I soon learned how involved and generous both Norma and Ernie were in many different sectors of the community. Ellen Heyman, a longtime friend of the Sieglers, and I met Ernie for breakfast early in 1999 (prior to opening our doors in January 2000). At the end of breakfast, Ernie pulled out a check for $12,500 hoping this would be a good “kickstart” for our fundraising. Furthermore, he agreed to join our Board lending his business acumen and sharing his long-standing relationships to help us in this early phase of our organization. Unfortunately, Norma died prior to The Gathering Place opening our doors. Ernie made a capital gift naming our healing garden, Norma’s Garden. Unfortunately, he died in January 2014, shortly after we moved into our present home in Beachwood, and never was able to soak in the magnificent outdoor space he helped us create. Walking through the garden you can feel both Norma and Ernie’s loving and beautiful spirit.

Sharon Sobol Jordan Shortly after I met Clem Hearey, he shared that he had recently met a woman who, like him, was a single parent having lost her husband to Melanoma. In 1999, Clem connected me with Sharon Sobol Jordan who, at the time, had a 5-year-old daughter and was working as Law Director for the City of Cleveland under Mayor Mike White. Sharon shared that her husband, Pat, was diagnosed the week Annie, their daughter, was born. From diagnosis to death was a little over a year leaving her with a 13 month old. I recognized her needs as a grieving spouse and shared my plan to provide programming for children who were on a cancer journey of a family member or another significant adult in their lives. Sharon’s understanding and passion for the cause was immediate and palpable. She began connecting me with others, such as John Parker, who helped propel this organization’s solid footing in an expedient manner. Adding to her “plate,” Sharon agreed to bring her life’s experiences, strategic thinking and leadership skills to our Board.
Hank Spain I was introduced to Hank by my parents. He was their trusted financial advisor early in his professional career. My parents became surrogate parents to Hank and I was impressed by his fund of knowledge and the kindness he showed my mom and dad. Recognizing that The Gathering Place would benefit from someone with investment expertise, I shared my vision and plans with Hank. He readily agreed to do whatever he could and joined our Board. He hosted our first Board meeting in a conference room in his office building.
Cheryl Wikas I was coming from a clinical background and had no nonprofit fundraising experience. I knew it was imperative that some of the first money raised would be directed to hire a development consultant. Several people were recommended to me and I met with all of them. Cheryl and I met at a local coffee shop. She had recently left a position as a program officer for a group of local foundations deciding to open a private consulting practice. Cheryl knew the foundation community as well as best fundraising practices for nonprofits. She shared that one of her parents had died of cancer and knew the challenges individuals and families faced while traveling that journey. Not only did Cheryl reduce her fees to fit what we could afford at the time, she taught me fundraising 101, 201 and 301! After her contractual relationship ended with The Gathering Place, Cheryl joined our Board to give much needed and valuable fundraising expertise going forward.
