CLASS ACTS Celebrating the Class of 2022 GREENVILLE COUNTY SCHOOLS
FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Dear Seniors,
You’ve made it to graduation, and what a journey it has been! Following the disruption and losses of the pandemic, I am pleased that you have been able to experience a more traditional senior year, with homecoming, proms, yearbook signing, performances, and all the milestone events which many have looked forward to throughout your high school years. This is a time of great change and anticipation. Some of you may feel deep sadness in leaving valued friends, teachers, and activities. Others of you are eager to begin your next phase, whether that be further education, entering the workforce, military service, or another endeavor. Some may be experiencing a combination of these emotions. All of this is normal and may change from day to day, or even hour to hour. Whatever your situation, you will carry with you the lessons learned during your Greenville County Schools education. Our aim is for you to be well-prepared for your next opportunities in life, education, and employment. This includes both your academic foundations as well as the often-cited “soft skills” that are so important in every endeavor, such as getting along with others, self-management, and working in teams. Through your class offerings, extracurricular experiences, and/or work-based learning opportunities, you have gained these skills and more, and you leave us well-equipped for both the expected and the unexpected in your future. On behalf of everyone at Greenville County Schools, I want to express our incredible pride in your perseverance and accomplishments. Congratulations! Sincerely,
W. Burke Royster, Ph.D. Superintendent, Greenville County Schools

What is SmartARTS? SmartARTS is MAC’s successful arts education initiative, housed at the TD Center for Arts Integration, that partners with the Greenville County School District to provide teaching artists, art supplies, and professional development to facilitate arts-integrated residencies in science, math, history, and language arts classrooms. The mission of SmartARTS is to improve academic achievement through arts-rich experiences in the core curriculum to encourage career-ready creative problem solving and social-emotional intelligence. These arts integration experiences for students will also address learning loss that has occurred as a result of COVID-19. SmartARTS is thrilled to be a partner in creating arts-rich schools across Greenville County. SmartARTS not only helps at-risk students re-engage with learning and to find hope despite trauma, but the program helps build the vocabulary and context that students of poverty lack through dialogue, collaborative learning, and reflection as students explore the curriculum through the lens of the arts.
Students at Tanglewood Elementary created a mural with Adam Schrimmer inspired by protest art.
SmartARTS Goals: 1. Pairing SmartARTS teaching artists with over 75 teachers to plan and carry out rigorous arts-rich residencies, 2. Training Greenville County School teachers in arts integration pedagogy to create arts rich classrooms. 3. Implementing, documenting and assessing units that are inquiry-based and highly experiential to encourage career-ready creative problem-solving by students.

“My English teacher Mr. Lloyd has taught me so much. I’ve known him since my freshman year and had the opportunity to get to know him better. He taught me English two and creative writing, and would always give me feedback on English classes I was taking with other teachers.”
ENOREE CAREER CENTER
“The AP program has had a huge impact on my education. This program, along with the AP teachers, has given me the challenge that I needed, but never received before high school. It has allowed me to experience college work and get an early start on my college education.”
FINE ARTS CENTER
“Having a school counselor like Mrs. Liz Martin has really helped push me to become the best student and young adult that I could be. She truly has gone above and beyond in building a relationship with me and helping connect me with individuals that will help me succeed beyond high school. I am truly grateful for all her hard work over the last four years. ”

“My current Government and Economics teacher, Coach Rhodes, has made a positive impact on me because he is very patient, makes learning fun, and engages with students. I feel I could come to him for anything and he would listen to me.”

“The teacher who has made the biggest impact in my life was my former welding teacher Mrs. Wanda Haynes. She’s always pushed me to do my best. She has helped me in so many ways and given me advice on how to be better. She’s taught me almost everything I’ve needed to know to be a successful welder and student. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. ”
GREENVILLE SR. HIGH
“The art teachers, Mrs. Norsworthy and Mr. Burgess, have had an immense positive impact on my education. Strictly academic education fails to encompass the creativity of students. Art classes challenged me in ways that academics never could, and I’m deeply grateful for that opportunity for learning and growth.”

“My experience in the Fine Arts Center Digital Filmmaking program has had a profound impact on my education. My instructor, Eric Rogers, has provided me with an opportunity to grow as an artist through hands-on assignments and projects.Additionally, he has supported my film work through film festivals and screenings.” “After failing a fire search, I threw my gloves and gave up. Mr. Deese walked over and said ‘You are stronger than you think, so pick it up and do it again.’ Two years later, I found myself saying that to a 1st-year student. That’s when I realized that Mr. Deese has raised me from a student who didn’t believe in myself to a leader who will never give up again.” “Out of all my teachers, I would say that Mr. Bunce had the most positive impact on my education during high school. I thoroughly enjoyed his hands-on teaching style and the way he was able to relate everything we learned, no matter how difficult, to a realworld, entertaining example.” “Mr. Flounders, an excellent teacher with admirable character, has had one of the most significant impacts on my education. He is a role model, displaying the qualities of humility, kindness, sincerity, patience, and honesty. He has also taught me several things about my future career, engineering, and best subject, mathematics.”

“Mrs. Kristin Hallman was my AP Biology teacher my junior year. She always has a positive attitude and possesses a strong understanding of what she teaches. Specifically, her ability to change something as complicated as meiosis into a simple, step-by-step process pushed me to decide I wanted to major in biology.”
SOUTHSIDE HIGH
“The Bonds Career Center Firefighting program has enabled me to obtain certifications in my career field of choice before graduating. It has also given me the opportunity to serve my community and receive on-thejob training through the various co-ops and internships I have participated in while attending.”
TRAVELERS REST HIGH
“The Magnet Program at JL Mann High School has had a positive impact on my education by providing me with an opportunity to explore subjects closely related to my academic interests and future aspirations. Students may earn a magnet distinction in math, science, technology, or any combination of these three.”

“All of my teachers, especially Ms. Stelling, have gone above and beyond to ensure my success. Whether I knew her as my teacher, club advisor, chaperone, or loyal faculty tennis tournament partner, she has always been there to support me in all of my endeavors!”
WOODMONT HIGH
“My opinion of English classes greatly changed under the instruction of Ms. Mayernik at RHS. Through her seminar class, I discovered that we cannot simply focus on one perspective in the actions we take or careers we pursue. This is a lesson I will remember as I enter the field of medicine.”

Chef Bell’s class helped me to explore my love of food and land on a career choice that incorporated my scientific and culinary interests.”

“A teacher that has impacted my education is Mr. (Coach) Matthew Large. As both a volleyball coach and math teacher, he taught me to believe in myself, which ultimately helped me accomplish as much as I have. I miss seeing him in the halls of Wade Hampton everyday.” “The International Baccalaureate program at Woodmont transformed my perspective as a student. Instead of being told what to think, I was taught how to think critically. Instead of needing to memorize, I learned how to synthesize, elaborate, and position information in a global context.”
