On the cover

“Parakeets on Pink” is a continuation of Joseph Bradley’s imagery around aviary themes. Bradley, a Greenville artist, creates his pieces using a process that includes 25-30 layers of paint. His goals in art are to surprise the viewer with what they may be expecting to see, engage in different ways over time, and create visual art to make a connection. “Each of my pieces is an attempt to do just that: connect,” says Bradley.

From our publisher

Situated in the Village of West Greenville, Community Journals Media Group is in the heart of the local art scene. Over the years, we have watched our arts community grow and we’ve been proud to be a partner in that expansion.

In our first edition of artsUpstate, we round up arts, music and cultural events from the heart of the Upstate to the mountains of Western North Carolina. In this pocketbook guide, you will find highlights of local exhibits, concerts, screenings and festivals to get you from May through September—from Greenville’s Artisphere celebration of local, national and international art to Jesus Christ Superstar at Flat Rock Playhouse in North Carolina in September.

There are plenty of experiences for music and art lovers of all genres and ages. With events just a short drive, we hope you will use artsUpstate as your unique guide through the spring and summer.

Frankie Welch graduated from Furman University in 1954 and then opened a boutique in Virginia “with American clothes, for American women.” Her first scarf design, featuring the Cherokee alphabet, raised funds for Native American higher education. Lady Bird Johnson took note of Welch’s designs and asked her to create a scarf promoting the First Lady’s travel program, “Discover America.”

For the next 40 years, everyone from Pat Nixon to Betty Ford to Rosalynn Carter sought out Welch’s designs, and she became one of the first designers to create looks for both parties. She went on to become a personal stylist, consultant, and speaker. Her Frankie dress, designed in 1970, is so iconic, it was added to the Costume Institute Collection at The Met in New York City.
