A POLITICAL OUTSIDER Greenville’s John Warren, chairman of Lima One Capital and former Marine, announces gubernatorial bid WORDS BY JORDANA MEGONIGAL | PHOTO BY WILL CROOKS On Monday, Upstate entrepreneur John Warren, founder and former CEO of Lima One Capital (now serving as chairman), announced his candidacy for this year’s gubernatorial campaign. Warren, who hails from Greenville, is a graduate of both Washington and Lee University and New York University, and additionally served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps. With his announcement, he is one of two candidates for the governor’s seat who come from the Upstate, alongside Lt. Gov. Kevin Bryant of Anderson. Greenville Journal was able to sit down with Warren to discuss his campaign run.

rather than having 110 state agencies who all have their own computer system, common sense would say, “Why don’t we have one computer system?” In fact, why do we have 110 state agencies? Let’s consolidate those and save some money. These are very basic things that really serve the taxpayer and would go a long way in government.

I will say this: When you don’t run certain aspects of the government like a business, you get problems like V.C. Summer, where you have a totally incompetent board that should either resign or be replaced, but instead, the whole thing is allowed to happen, which puts taxpayers on the line for $4 billion in losses. The VC Summer project is the best contrast to allowing South Carolinians to make a decision: Do you want the state to be run as it has been run, or do you want it to run efficiently?

Outside of that, what is it that you bring to the table that none of the other contenders do?

My background has taught me that leadership comes down to three things: core values, core competencies, and courage. You have to have all three to be a true, efficient leader. So, in terms of the values, we need to return some conservative, common-sense principles to government. In terms of competencies, we really need someone who knows how to run a business, because the current [state] budget is what, $9 billion? (Editor’s note: For fiscal year 2018-19, the state budget is $8.1 billion from general funds, up slightly from $7.9 billion last year.)

But none of these people have actually run a business with that sizeable of a profit and loss.

In terms of courage, there’s a lot of corruption down there, and you’re going to have to fight an ongoing battle with special interests, with the lobbyists, and with a few of the corrupt legislators to really get things done. I think my background proves that I have all three of those characteristics.

So, what is the main thing you hope to improve in S.C.?

So, let’s get to the bottom of it: Why run for politics?

I really feel called to get into the race. My background is service. I am a former infantry officer in the Marine Corps that has led over 300 combat missions; I signed up for the Marine Corps shortly after 9/11 because I felt like my country needed me in a time of war.

I love my state and I think we have everything going for us as a state except our state government. When I look at our state government, our pension system is bankrupt. There’s the VC Summer [nuclear expansion] project, where taxpayers are $4 billion in the hole, with citizens in Newberry and below still paying for a site that isn’t ever going to be operational.

We’re wasting so much money in spending, and our education system is 50th in the nation.

All of those things are completely unacceptable, and I think I can bring some commonsense conservative principles back to really make a huge difference for South Carolina.

You were quoted once as saying that we, as a state, have a huge leadership problem politically, that we have a failure of competence and a failure of values, so you’ve been consistent in that message. But you go on to say that a lot of people go on to run who have not been successful in the real world.

What is “real-world” experience, and what do you think that brings to the office?

So, let’s look at who I am: I am a businessman; I am a conservative; and I’m a Marine.

Who I am not — I am not a career politician; I am not a government insider; and I am not a lawyer. I am accountable to a profit and loss statement, and I know how to run effective organizations.

One of the problems we have in Columbia is that people talk a lot about creating jobs, but I will be the only one in the race that has actually ever created hundreds of jobs. I think we need someone with real-world experience, who actually knows how to create jobs, who actually runs an efficient company — those are the leadership skills that we need to run our state. And, I happen to think that as a CEO, a founder who grew a company, and as a platoon commander who was in charge of 42 Marines in combat, those are skills that transfer immediately to the executive level at the state — the governor’s seat.

You mention running a business. Do you feel that government should run like a business? Because there are those who don’t feel that way.

The No. 1 characteristic of a business is that it values money. In government, the money that the government has, well, that’s South Carolina’s money. That’s hard-earned money by all of the citizens, and yet our political leaders don’t value it.

But we can do a lot of very basic things to save taxpayers a lot of money; for example,

Overall, I think we need to make South Carolina stronger and more secure. That encompasses a lot of things, but to start, we need to create jobs by reforming the tax code. We need to improve every child’s education in the school system; we’re 50th right now, which is totally unacceptable. We need to allow parents the option to choose where they send their children. We need to make government more efficient and save taxpayers’ dollars. And, we need to find a solution to the VC Summer project; no taxpayer in South Carolina should continue to pay for a facility that is never going to be operational. The Legislature has been in session for one month already; why hasn’t that been done?

You just mentioned tax code reform, which is a big topic, especially with the federal changes we have this year. So, talk a little bit more about that. What does that mean to you?

With the tax code right now, there are too many special-interest loopholes, and the tax rate is one of the highest in the South, especially from the income tax level. When you combine that with the sales tax level, it’s also very high and encompasses a ton of loopholes for special interests. What we need to do, rather than penalize small businesses that create great-paying jobs, which the current tax code specifically undoes, is we need to flatten out the base and lower both the income rate and the sales tax rate. That would really stimulate the economy.

With that kind of focus on businesses, I have to ask: When it comes to business in South Carolina, should we focus more on recruitment, or entrepreneurship?

I think recruiting companies is a terrific idea. [Former S.C. Gov.] Nikki Haley did an amazing job of selling large companies like Boeing on all of the benefits of South Carolina.

But that’s just one aspect of job creation. The other aspect is cultivating a culture and a government system that encourages entrepreneurship and small business. The vast majority of South Carolinians are employed by small businesses, who are penalized by our current tax code because they don’t have the lobbyists that a lot of these large corporations have, and they ultimately suffer and subsidize a lot of the large business. I’m a conservative; I believe in limited government, but I believe all of South Carolina should have limited government and lower taxes — not just a few.

What is it you want people to walk away knowing about you?

More than anything, I want them to know that I am doing this because I feel called and that I am going to serve the people of South Carolina. That is the only reason I’m running.

SUPPLY IN DEMAND Upstate hospitals combat IV bag shortage amid flu season WORDS BY ANDREW MOORE In the midst of what health officials say is shaping up to be the worst flu season in nearly a decade, three of the region’s largest hospital systems are struggling to provide intravenous (IV) bags for incoming patients.

The bags, which are used to administer fluids and medications, have been in short supply since Hurricane Maria’s devastation of Puerto Rico in September, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The storm not only knocked out the island’s electrical grid but also damaged a number of manufacturing facilities responsible for the production of IV bags.

“If we can’t support patients coming in emergency rooms who have the flu, more people are going to die,” Deborah Pasko, director of medication safety and quality at the American Society of Health System Pharmacists, told the Associated Press. “I see it as a crisis.”

The shortage comes amid a spike in flu cases, both in South Carolina and nationwide. This year’s flu season is particularly intense due to a mutation of the virus that made the original iteration of the flu vaccine less effective, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reports that the flu is widespread throughout the state, with more than 81,000 confirmed cases since October. Greenville County currently leads the state, with more than 3,000 cases of the flu reported last week.

The flu season lasts from October to May, but usually picks up during the winter months, according to the CDC. Those at highest risk include people 65 and older, people with chronic medical conditions such as asthma or heart disease, pregnant women, and young children.

Symptoms of the flu include a sudden onset of fever, dry cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and nasal congestion, according to the CDC. Most people recover in a few days to two weeks, but some develop pneumonia and other complications that require hospitalization.

Officials at hospitals across the Upstate emphasized that the national shortage of IV bags has not yet affected their ability to treat patients, but has in some cases changed the treatment methods.

The Greenville Health System, for instance, has limited the use of IV bags at its eight inpatient hospitals since November, according to John Pearson, director of pharmacy services. “We have been closely monitoring the situation to ensure that we proactively take the necessary steps to minimize our patients from being impacted,” he said.

GHS typically uses more than 10,000 small-volume IV bags a month to administer antibiotics and other medica-

tions, according to Pearson. But to conserve resources, the health system is requiring nurses and physicians at all inpatient hospitals to deliver medications into a patient’s bloodstream via syringe or administer oral medications when they can.

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, which owns and operates Pelham Medical Center in Greer, has managed the shortage since October through the use of oral medications, continuous drug infusions, and alternative fluid options, according to Dr. David Church, vice president of oncology and support services.

Anderson-based AnMed Health has adapted to the ongoing shortage by switching patients to oral therapies

when possible, stopping IV therapies when patients no longer need them, directly injecting medications rather than delivering them via IV whenever possible, and identifying alternative suppliers, according to spokesperson Kari Lutz.

“We have begun to see our inventory levels return to normal in recent days, and are hopeful that we are nearing the end of the shortage,” she said.

Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, which operates a number of inpatient hospitals and outpatient facilities throughout the Upstate, did not respond to multiple interview requests before time of publication.

age of IV bags to improve in the coming months as more and more manufacturing facilities are restored to full capacity and connected to Puerto Rico’s power grid.

Numerous pharmaceutical companies, including Baxter International Inc. and B. Braun Medical Inc., have already resumed production, according to the FDA. But they must first clear their backlog of orders.

In the meantime, the FDA is working with pharmaceutical companies to extend the expiration dates on critical drugs and temporarily permit the import of IV products from facilities outside the United States. Baxter, for instance, has been shipping IV bags from its facilities in Ireland, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, England, and Italy since October.

Others, however, are calling on the federal government to develop a more comprehensive strategy to prevent future shortages.

In November, the American Hospital Association and five other trade groups addressed a letter to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, arguing that the production of medications and supplies is too dependent on manufacturing facilities in Puerto Rico.

“Congress should examine how the pharmaceutical industry communicates information about what drugs are manufactured at which plants and where those plants are located. To date, no state or federal law requires that this information be disclosed,” the letter reads.

“This lack of transparency puts health care systems at a significant disadvantage when trying to take a proactive approach to handling a potential drug shortage. The current system results in a reactive approach, which is usually short-notice and has a rapid downstream effect, leaving hospitals at a loss to meet patient needs.”

Governor’s School, city taking steps to protect iconic ‘roots tree’ during construction Photo by Will Crooks

It’s probably the most famous tree in Greenville, or at least the most photographed, that American beech at the edge of Falls Park with its exposed roots.

And the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, which owns the hillside on which the tree stands, and the city of Greenville will be taking steps to protect the tree during construction of additional space for the school’s music program.

Mike Taylor, managing principal of DP3 Architects, said four trees near the “roots tree” need to come down for construction of the 10,000-square-foot building next to the school’s current music building. He asked the city to consider allowing one of its crews to remove the nearby trees because they know that it is iconic and the importance that it not be harmed.

“It’s one of the most photographed trees in the city,” said Dale Westermeier, a horticulturalist who is the city’s director of parks and grounds. “It’s a spectacular tree.”

Nobody knows for sure how the iconic tree got there or when it took root. Westermeier doesn’t believe it was planted, but instead was a “volunteer” that sprouted on its own.

The tree is at the edge of what once was the Furman Arboretum, which was South Carolina’s first arboretum. The arboretum was established in 1929 and designed by Furman professor S.A. Ives. After the Greenville Garden Club won second place and a $500 prize in a “Better Homes and Gardens” contest in 1932 for its work on the McDaniel Avenue Rock Quarry Garden, the club added 266 trees to the arboretum. The Furman Arboretum was not maintained during World War II and was abandoned entirely when Furman moved to its current campus near Travelers Rest. But the “roots tree” flourished.

“It’s obviously pretty comfortable there,” said Westermeier, who said American beech trees could live several hundred years.

Perched at the top of an embankment off Furman College Way, the former road turned into a foot trail at the edge of Falls Park, the tree’s twisted, exposed roots have prompted some residents to call it the “Medusa tree” after the monster in Greek mythology that had snakes on her head instead of hair. Westermeier said removing the four nearby trees should not have any adverse effects on the “roots tree.”

“Being a Furman grad, I know how iconic that tree is,” Greenville City Manager John Castile said, adding the city would need to have an agreement with the school, and identify how the removal of the four trees would be paid for, before work could start.

The new music building will be behind the Governor’s School’s amphitheater and library, near Furman College Way. The $4.31 million building will house studios, practice rooms, and ensemble rehearsal space. It will also provide humidity-controlled storage space, something the school doesn’t have.

“Currently, students can be found practicing in hallways and all over campus, so they need dedicated practice space,” said Christina Vandiver, the school’s public relations director. “We also do not have sufficient rehearsal room space to accommodate large ensembles and bands.”

The music department is the Governor’s School’s largest with 94 students. The new space won’t allow the school to increase the number of music students because the residential high school is limited in how many students it can accept by the number of beds it has. The school’s capacity is 242 students.

Groundbreaking is expected in April. Construction will take about a year to complete.

By 2030, South Carolina will be one of four states with a nursing shortage of more than 10,000, according to an analysis by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Upstate colleges taking steps to address South Carolina’s looming nursing shortage South Carolina will have 10,400 fewer registered nurses than it needs by 2030, and three Upstate colleges and universities are taking steps to address the looming shortage.

A new partnership between North Greenville University and the University of South Carolina Upstate will give North Greenville biology majors interested in a nursing career the opportunity to earn two bachelor’s degrees in five years.

And Bob Jones University will launch a School of Health Professions in the fall, a move that the school says will allow it over the next several years to add resident and online programs, particularly at the graduate level.

“As the level of illness in the general population has increased over the last 20 years, as well as the number of seniors over 65, there is a need of more expertly qualified nurses to take care of them now and in the coming years,” said Dr. Tom Allen, dean of NGU’s College of Science and Mathematics.

And with baby boomers reaching their 60s and 70s, the need for nurses will grow even more.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Center for Health Workforce Analysis for 2014-2030 says seven states will have nurse shortages by 2030. South Carolina is one of four states projected to have shortages of more than 10,000, in addition to California, Texas, and New Jersey.

Students will earn a bachelor of science degree in biology from NGU after their fourth year and a bachelor of science degree in nursing from USC Upstate after their fifth year.

The first group of NGU students will enter the nursing program at USC Upstate in spring 2019.

BJU will reposition programs currently in its other schools into three divisions in the School of Health Professions: exercise and sport science; nursing; and health sciences, which encompasses pre-med and pre-dental, communication disorders, and concentrations in pre-physician assistant, pre-physical therapy, pre-pharmacy, public and global health, and health-care administration. More than 400 students are currently enrolled in these programs.

In the past five years alone BJU enrollment in health-related programs has grown more than 21 percent.

AMERICAN STORY

Bob Dotson logged 4 million miles across the country telling the stories of ordinary Americans who did extraordinary things.

B

ob Dotson appreciates a good story.

It started at a young age. Dotson, the former host of “American Story,” the longrunning series on NBC’s “Today” show, remembers being 8 years old and listening to his grandfather tell the story of how, while on his honeymoon, he was unexpectedly reunited with his long-lost brother in the dining car of a Salt Lake City-bound Union Pacific train.

Dotson’s grandfather had a postcard he had written to his mother from that long-ago honeymoon. “It was probably the first tweet of the 20th century,” Dotson said. The postcard showed Dotson’s grandparents floating on their backs in the Great Salt Lake. The picture had a big circle drawn around a third person. “Maw, we found Vance.

It led Dotson to a career of storytelling, one during which he spent traversing the country — logging more than 4 million miles — looking for seemingly ordinary people who did extraordinary things, the people whose names we don’t know because they are too busy making America what it is to tweet about it, the people in the shadows and away from the spotlight that make America work. ******* One of the people Dotson found was Jim Crudup. Dotson was in a coffee shop in Mississippi, and people there told him he needed to go see Crudup because he was re-

storing a 1946 Ford and was really good with his hands.

“It really was a pretty car,” Dotson said.

But that wasn’t the real story. After getting out of the Army, Crudup got a job as a truck driver. But the company bellied up by the time Crudup got to Detroit, so he took a job cleaning medical tools at a research lab at the University of Michigan. As he observed the surgical students, he realized their tools were too big.

“He was one of the first people in America to come up with microsurgical tools,” Dotson said. He taught students how to use them, and, eventually, the professors were sending surgical students having difficulty understanding a concept to him because he had a natural teaching ability.

Crudup, an adjunct professor whose students went on to great fame and fortune, didn’t have a medical degree.

In fact, he never graduated from college.

When Dotson asked him why he never became a doctor, Crudup told him he was 45 years old, had three kids, and because it was the 1950s and he was African-American. “That’s three strikes, and that’s not going to work,” Crudup told Dotson.

His reward? “I was expecting some cliché answer. But, instead, he said, ‘Well, I’m 82 years old and one of these days I’m going to be in an operating room, and I’m going to call in an I.O.U. and I’m going to know they’re well taught,’” Dotson said. “This is a story about somebody who made a significant contribution to America, but he’s not going to write a book about it. He’s too busy solving problems.”

******* The America Dotson saw is a different America that is reported every day on television and on the internet, he said.

He uses the example of the No. 68 bus that goes by his daughter’s apartment in Brooklyn, N.Y. On its route to Coney Island, it passes a McDonald’s that is owned by a first-generation American Hasidic Jewish family. The restaurant’s general manager is first-generation Palestinian.

Most of their customers that come in for their morning coffee are from Russia and the Ukraine, India and Pakistan, he said.

“Back home, a lot of their relatives are at each other’s throats every day. But in Brooklyn, they’re on each other’s soccer teams,” Dotson said.

Why is that so?

Dotson believes it’s because the people who came to America — and those who are still coming to America — are pioneers. They have a different mindset, he said.

They look at how they can fit in, Dotson said. They look at what they can add.

“If you look at it from the bottom up and not the top down, not from all the folks who make a lot of money to pontificate on TV every day about how terrible it is, you realize the country is still working. People are still getting up in the morning; the kids are going to school.

Dotson thinks the answer can be found by studying people in your backyard or in the coffee shop across the street and not necessarily listening to politicians. ******* After Dotson retired, he and his wife, Linda, could have lived anywhere in the United States. After all, he had seen most of the country.

“There are a lot of beautiful places in this country. It’s like living in a postcard,” Dotson said. “But six weeks later, I would have gotten up in the morning and said, ‘OK, now what do I do?’”

Shoeless Joe Jackson — or more specifically, a controversy over who owned his will and the rare signature contained on it that ended up at the Supreme Court — had brought Dotson to Greenville before the late Mayor Max Heller’s vision for downtown came to fruition.

“Just figure the odds of this: He’s an immigrant. He’s Jewish in the deep South, and he comes up with a plan that’s, ‘Let’s not worry about what we’re going to do for ourselves next spring, or even our kids. It’s what should we do for our grandchildren,’” Dotson said. “And look what they did.”

Dotson points to the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, which sits on a hill overlooking Falls Park.

“In any other town, that hillside would be covered with

developers building high rises selling for the highest dollar,” he said. “But here, it’s, ‘Let’s just do this for juniors and seniors in high school, and, in fact, they can sleep here. And we won’t just build a building; we’re going to build a Tuscan villa and it’s going to be gorgeous.’… And they did.”

That was the effort initially of one person, Virginia Uldrick, who died in November.

Greenville’s transformation is a testament to the people who live here who come in all flavors and backgrounds, rich and poor, he said.

“It’s the pioneer spirit,” Dotson said.

“If you’re looking for what the essence of America is, it’s a bunch of folks who band together to face down a common challenge and do better generation after - Bob Dotson generation.”

******* When Dotson was a young television reporter in Oklahoma, he went to a fire station in Stillwater that was being torn down. The fire chief told him there was some film up in the attic.

Dotson took a look and was told it had been put there

by Benny Kent, who worked for a newsreel company that sent stories to New York City. “Benny Kent was me 100 years ago,” Dotson said.

The stash of flammable nitrate-based film included Geronimo’s last buffalo hunt. “There was all kinds of great stuff,” said Dotson, who said Kent was enough of a reporter and storyteller that he did stories that he knew he couldn’t sell because they were interesting, including stories on the 24 all African-American towns in Oklahoma.

His first “American Story” segment was a play off that story. It was a segment on Birdie Farmer, a 101-year-old woman who was the last living relative of the original Buffalo soldiers, which were black cavalry units that went west after the Civil War. They were told they had to keep the Native Americans away from the immigrants lining up for free land.

Dotson asked Farmer what her husband would have said was the best day of his life. Dotson figured he would have said the day he married Birdie, since she was 30 or 35 years younger than he. At one time, George Armstrong Custer was offered the position of head of the Buffalo soldiers. He turned it down. “My husband said that was the best day of his life, because you know Custer went to Little Bighorn and got scalped, and we went to Fort Sill, Okla.,” Birdie told Dotson.

While he doesn’t reside in an ancient palace or command an army of monkeys like King Louie from Disney’s “The Jungle Book,” Kumar, the Greenville Zoo’s male Sumatran orangutan, is still living like royalty. In addition to receiving free meals on a daily basis, he has a playground and personal caretaker, all of which are funded by local taxpayer dollars.

But despite his lavish lifestyle, Kumar can’t resist the call of the wild. Since arriving at the Greenville Zoo in November 2016, the 12-year-old orangutan has broken out of his enclosure three times, according to Dr. Nick Kapustin, veterinarian and deputy administrator.

In June 2017, for instance, Kumar chewed through one of the wires used to secure the exhibit’s netting. He then slipped through a small hole and sat on top of the exhibit for about 10 minutes before returning. Crew members used several padlocks to secure the netting immediately after the escape.

But the repair wasn’t strong enough to hold Kumar, who escaped for a second time in July after chewing through another wire in the exhibit’s netting.

“I think he was showing off for Lana,” said Kapustin, referring to the zoo’s 32-year-old female orangutan who shares an exhibit with Kumar. “He got out of the enclosure for a couple of minutes, grabbed a nearby extension cord, and gave it to her.”

Kumar’s most recent escape took place on Jan. 22, when the zoo was closed to the public for annual maintenance. The rebellious ape broke out when contractors finished repairing mesh panels in the enclosure, according to Kapustin. He then found a weak spot, tore a hole, squeezed out, and sat on top of the enclosure for nearly 20 minutes before returning inside. The contractors later returned to “double tie” all the connections of the domed enclosure.

other animals because of their intelligence.

Numerous studies in the wild and in captivity indicate that orangutans, which share about 97 percent of the same genetic material as humans, are among the smartest land animals on the planet. In fact, they’re capable of learning and using tools.

Orangutan mothers, for instance, typically only give birth about once every eight years in order to allow their offspring, which start as fully dependent infants, enough time to learn how to climb and distinguish the hundreds of plants and fruits that make up their diet.

As they mature and venture out on their own, young orangutans continue to develop their resourcefulness and put the skills they’ve learned into practice. That includes using various tools to make their lives in the jungle easier. Researchers have observed them turning branches into fly swatters and back scratchers, constructing umbrellas when it rains, using leaves as bandages to dress wounds, weaving twigs together to build a nest for sleeping, and more.

“Their ability to create tools out of ordinary objects is fascinating,” said Jennifer Stahl, a zookeeper. “We actually have to scan the exhibit after it rains to make sure there aren’t any rocks in the ground, because they can use them to crack or break the viewing glass.”

Kapustin said the zoo’s staff members perform at least four security drills throughout the year to practice their response to a large animal escape. When an escape does occur, the zoo enters an immediate lockdown, meaning the front gate is closed and guests are moved to the gift shop and various other safe areas. The zoo also keeps darting equipment and lethal weapons on standby just in case, said Kapustin. “Our priority is preserving human life, so we usually have no other choice but to dispatch an animal if it approaches a member of the public.”

He added that the zoo is required to contact local law enforcement agencies if the escaped animal breaches the premises. In Kumar’s case, the zoo’s response team only

used a tranquilizer dart during the first escape. “People like to think orangutans are cute, but they’re really just wild animals at the end of the day,” Kapustin said. “Their behavior can change instantaneously.”

Although aggression, especially the lethal kind, is not a common trait among orangutans, the zoo still considers Kumar and Lana a danger to the public. An orangutan is about seven times stronger than a human, according to Kapustin. Luckily, Kumar stayed away from the public and returned to his exhibit during the escapes.

“I think his decision to stay in the zoo really speaks to the level of care he’s given here in Greenville,” Kapustin said. “We’re home sweet home.”

SAVING A SPECIES Kumar was born at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas, and later transferred to the Oregon Zoo in Portland. He arrived at the Greenville Zoo shortly after Lana, who was born with her twin sister at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans and later transferred to the Cincinnati Zoo. She was sent to Greenville in September 2016.

Kumar and Lana were transferred to the zoo as a recommendation by the Orangutan Species Survival Program.

The purpose of the program is to ensure the survival of threatened or endangered species by monitoring captive populations and making breeding recommendations based on genetic variability and spaces available at other accredited institutions, according to Kapustin.

Bornean and Sumatran orangutans are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The Sumatran orangutan population is estimated to be under 15,000, while about 54,000 orangutans are thought to live in Borneo.

Rampant logging and the rapid expansion of palm oil plantations have been blamed for destroying their jungle habitat

throughout Indonesia. Plantation workers and villagers also attack adult orangutans that feed on their crops, while poachers capture babies to sell as exotic pets.

Since the arrival of Kumar and Lana, the Greenville Zoo has worked to boost its support of local and international conservation efforts to help Sumatran orangutans. In 2016, for instance, Stahl was awarded a $2,000 grant from the Greenville Zoo Conservation Committee to visit the Melaka Zoo and Night Safari in Malaysia. While there, she spent two weeks renovating exhibits, participating in orangutan conservation efforts, and teaching training techniques.

Last year, the zoo donated $5,500 to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme, a nonprofit that rehabilitates apes kept as pets or driven into conflict with humans. It also began advocating the purchase of palm oil that comes from sustainable plantations, which are certified

by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. The group was established in 2004 to ensure workers producing the oil do not destroy the habitats of endangered animals such as orangutans.

Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world. It’s used for food, detergents, cosmetics, and biofuels. The establishment of palm oil plantations throughout Indonesia has been a disaster for orangutans and other endangered wildlife as companies prefer to clear primary forests rather than degraded areas or grasslands, according to Stahl. More than 20 million acres have been opened up for plantations throughout Sumatra and Borneo.

“Something as practical as making sure you buy the right peanut butter can make a real difference,” Kapustin said. “And if everybody at least used some of that perspective in their life, then a lot of things might come together to make for a less dreadful situation.”

In 2016, Jennifer Stahl, a zookeeper at the Greenville Zoo, visited the Melaka Zoo and Night Safari in Malaysia, where she spent two weeks participating in orangutan conservation efforts, among other activities.

Annual Meals on Wheels of Greenville event provides more than 55,400 meals to the homebound Meals on Wheels of Greenville’s annual Sweetheart Charity Ball was held Saturday, Feb. 3, and proceeds will provide over 55,400 meals to the homebound of Greenville County. The money raised by the ball will support the Meal Enhancement Program to help meet federal guidelines for senior nutrition, provide more fruits and vegetables, and deliver more groceries to homebound citizens of Greenville County.

The Sweetheart Charity Ball was held at the Hyatt Regency Downtown, and funds were raised through silent and live auctions, Fund-a-Need donations, and sponsorships by partners including Greenville Health System, Greenville Maintenance Services Inc., Heiser Distribution, Hincapie Sportswear, Michelin, Strange Bros. Grading Co. Inc., Cintas, and PNC Bank.

United Way of Greenville County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program benefits thousands of people in the Greenville community and officially began on Feb. 1. It allows households making $60,000 or less to file their taxes for free with the help of experts. The program helps to ensure that individuals get all deductions that are available to them. Last year, the program helped more than 10,000 people, saving $1.8 million in tax preparation fees and bringing $13.5 million tax refunds to the Upstate.

This is the program’s 12th year in the Upstate. There are both online and in-person options to help meet the needs of local taxpayers. The program is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Appointments are now being scheduled by calling 2-1-1, United Way’s resource helpline, or toll-free at 866-892-9211. The VITA program will continue to run through the April 17 filing deadlines. continued on PAGE 22

Frances Duncan Tate SIMPSONVILLE – Kay Frances Duncan Tate, 86, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018, at home in Simpsonville, SC after a short battle with cancer.

Born in Greenville, SC, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Viola Duncan. She was married to the late Bert J. Tate for 63 years.

Mrs. Tate is survived by a son, Michael V. (Mike) Tate and his wife Kathy of Fountain Inn, SC, 2 grandchildren, Jeremy Michael Tate and Jenny, of Charleston, SC, Ashley Tate Young and Seth of Easley, SC. She is also survived by a sister, Doris Duncan Filmon and Loy of Aiken, SC, and great-grandchildren, Matthew Tate and Grant and Lydia Young. Mrs. Tate was predeceased by her daughter Valerie Lynne Tate in 1968, and her brother, Jack Duncan.

Frances and Bert worked for many years with the young people of Mauldin First Baptist where they were affectionately known as Mama and Papa Tate.

She was very active in her church in WMU, YWA’s/Acteens, Sunday School and the Pearls Group for widows. She loved crafts of all kinds, including jewelry-making and painting.

The family received friends on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at Mackey Funerals & Cremations at Century Drive in Greenville. Funeral services were Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at Mauldin First Baptist with Rev. Wade Leonard officiating.

Marty Crawford GREENVILLE – Marty Keith Crawford, 70, died peacefully at home on Friday, February 9, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

The family would like to thank Open Arms Hospice, and also these special sitters who were so helpful her last two weeks; Rebecca Miller, Mel Wright and Victoria Santamaria.

Born in Pelzer, he was a son of the late James Clayton Crawford and Nellie Roberts Crawford.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Ann; son, Dr. Myles Crawford (Stephanie) of Franklin, TN; and the loves of his life, his three grandsons, Oscar, Julian, and Sebastian. Other survivors include a sister, Bonnie Klyce (Don); a brother, Edward Crawford (Robin); and numerous family and friends.

Marty served his country for 20 years as a member of the U.S. Army National Guard, and retired after 43 years from Canal Insurance Company. He was a member of Mt. Zion Christian Fellowship, was greatly loved by many and will be dearly missed.

A visitation was held Tuesday, February 13, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The graveside funeral service was on Wednesday, February 14th at 1:00 p.m. at the M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Cemetery.

Advent United Methodist Church remembers fire On Feb. 8, congregation members and staff of Advent United Methodist Church on Woodruff Road gathered to remember the events of a year ago, when the sanctuary burned and destroyed the building. Since that time, Advent has been working on plans for rebuilding while carrying on with services in the Christian Life Center.

Jim Tindal, chairperson of church council and local business leader, said, “With such total devastation, the congregation could have easily focused on ourselves and all that we lost. Instead, this congregation came together as a family should during a crisis. We established new temporary worship space and then immediately got back to work serving our community and sharing the love of God with the world.”

In 2017, Advent supported over 25 local, regional, and international organizations. The church provided meals for 188 students at local schools for the weekends every week, housed six families in transition homes (five of which moved to permanent housing), built a Golden Strip home with Habitat for Humanity, provided over 425 gifts to needy children at Christmas, served more than 800 neighbors in need through Triune Soup Kitchen, provided 20 percent of the total volunteer hours at Harvest Hope Food Bank, and contributed enough funds to build 10 water wells internationally.

Habitat Greenville dedicates home to single mom Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County dedicated a home for Brittany Bartilucci and her son, Dominic, on Thursday, Feb. 1. The house was donated to Habitat Greenville in honor of Marjorie E. Schmidt, who lived in the house for 35 years. Bartilucci is in the process of completing Habitat’s affordable homeownership program and purchasing of the home. She has completed 25 hours of

homeownership education classes as well as 200 hours of “sweat equity” helping to rehabilitate her home and build the homes of other Habitat homeowners. She will also pay an affordable mortgage for the home.

During the dedication, Bartilucci was presented with the ceremonial key and several gifts to prepare her for life as a homeowner, including tools, a vacuum cleaner, cleaning supplies, a lawnmower, quilts, and more.

March Surge

It’s time to turn planning into action for your spring garden For me, March signals a fresh surge of life in the Piedmont. Depending on where you live in the area and what direction you face, spring will happen at different times for you in the little micro-climates we live amidst. When the buds start to swell and the soil “starts to stir,” as my grandmother used to say, you know it is time.

Spring also brings wildflowers to our landscapes. We are fortunate to live in one of the most diverse horticultural regions of the temperate world, according to the South Carolina Native Plant Society. I would encourage you to visit their website (www.scnps.org), as they have a most interesting brochure on the wild plants on the Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail. And save the date for their popular Upstate native plant sale on April 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Conestee Park in Mauldin.

The maintenance chores of the winter garden are mostly completed — leaves for the most part up, mulched, and composted and pine straw or chipped bark down. I enjoy walking the yard with a freshly sharpened pair of bypass pruners daily. A clip here and a nip there is not only good for the plant but also good for my soul.

Lawn care becomes paramount in the minds of most of us now. Consult with your local nursery to be sure you are doing what is best for your type of grass.

Take a keen look at your lawn and ask yourself if you really want that much of it to take care of. If not, then think about shaping the lawn in a way unique to you and expanding your beds and borders.

Read about the French word “potager,” which means kitchen gardening, a style of gardening that combines traditional plantings with herbs and vegetables.

Maybe this idea appeals to you.

Hayward says in his book “Tending Your Garden,” “These seasonal maintenance chores can be considered management.

Maintenance is about knowing the when and why of doing all the jobs of keeping a garden in good heart and balance.”

I do not advise any pruning of spring flowering shrubs until they have flowered.

Hydrangeas can be fertilized in late March, as well as shrubs, perennials, winter annuals, and emerging bulbs for that flush of flower and new growth. As Gordon

Spring trumpets the beginning of my vegetable planting. As the moisture of the soil allows, by March 1 I try to have my beds turned, composted, and ready to plant. Preferring to direct sow most of my spring seeds, I also plan potatoes in March. Besides potatoes, the following plants can all go in the ground next month: asparagus root, celeriac (grown

now but harvested after first frost in fall), fennel, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, kale, lettuce, mustard, onion sets and plants, peas, radish, spinach, turnips, Italian parsley, chives, shallots, arugula, blueberries, raspberry canes, and figs.

Continue to pull weeds and watch for the dandelion. This perky little yellow flower used to annoy me, but now it makes me smile. Its leaves and root, used for centuries, make tasty greens for a salad and delicious tea. The plant is loaded with vitamins and minerals. In most yards, it grows freely in the spring.

Seeds and roots and trees and shrubs all have this amazing inner guide and seem to know when the time is right for them to surge into life. This vital inner force that permeates all living things is always present. See you in the garden.

If frost is expected, I cover my crops for the night, but these plants prefer cool temperatures and cool soil. Last frost can be anywhere from April 11 to 20 here in the Piedmont, but following the weather is a must if you plant an early spring garden. MORE THAN A MURAL A 7,000-square-foot piece of original artwork has been unveiled from the rooftop of Embassy Suites RiverPlace Downtown, showcasing Greenville’s history, its landmarks, and some of its most notable institutions, as well as the community’s civic leaders.

Scenes depicted span the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Liberty Bridge — where Greenville vanguards Max Heller, Tommy Wyche, and Buck Mickel are captured in conversation — and together they tell the story of a vibrant community made up of visionary people.

The artwork, designed and painted by nationally renowned artist August Vernon, is visible to guests from their hotel rooms and patrons of UP on the Roof restaurant. The mural was commissioned in cooperation with Windsor Aughtry Hotel Group, which owns the hotel, and it joins other large-scale commissions Vernon has created for communities across the United States.

Vernon studied at Art Institute of Pittsburgh. His mural career was inspired by the scale and beauty of murals in Philadelphia; Baltimore; Key West, Fla.; and other places he’s traveled and studied.

EMERGING TALENT Young Greenville artists receive recognition at national arts competition MELODY WRIGHT | EDITORIAL INTERN

Each year, thousands of young artists from all over the country compete against each other in literary, visual, design, and performing arts for the YoungArts competition.

With more than 7,500 student submissions from 47 states, the top 10 percent were recognized as winners in 2018.

Representing the growing artistry in the county, nine Greenville high school students received recognition in the national arts competition. Four of these nine are YoungArts finalists.

The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities had six students who placed in the competition, including the four finalists.

SCGSAH student Aidan Forster received a writing finalist award in creative nonfiction and an honorable mention in poetry. Forster attended National YoungArts Week in Miami last month along with other finalists, and he now qualifies as a candidate for the U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, one of the highest honors for high school students with academic and artistic excellence.

Forster submitted two personal essays and a poem for the competition. One essay centered on his voice, which he received criticism for at a young age for its highness.

“That piece is called ‘Autobiography of a Voice,’ and it explores my relationship to my voice as both an agent of beauty or positivity in my life but also something that inhibited my social presence in ways,” Forster said.

Forster said his two personal essays really connect and speak to each other. “My other piece examines the particular isolation that I felt growing up queer in the suburbs,” he said. “I chose those because I thought they were my most potent pieces, both in terms of language and content and the communion between the pieces that I thought was the most exciting.”

With his primary passion poetry-writing, Forster hopes to pursue literary work in the future. “I realized at YoungArts that my possibility as an artist extends beyond just the creation of poetry, but to advocacy and activism. I think I would also like to somehow unite my passions for writing and my passions for the LGBTQ community and activism just as sort of a joint venture.”

Another SCGSAH student, Kyle Tolbert, won a voice merit award in the singer-songwriter category. He submitted an original piece called “Bridges” through a technique called live looping. “I looped these layers of sounds and they repeat themselves, and then I’d sing over that with my lyrics and melody,” Tolbert said.

Saying that looping isn’t something most people are familiar with, Tolbert drew inspiration from singer Kimbra and used

looping to capture the audience with a unique performance.

“I’m going to pursue music as an artist. I want to go to college and get the whole spectrum of music, business, marketing, artist management, singer and songwriter, and artistry development,” he said.

Tolbert says he has something to say with each of his performances. “I think that art is a way to expand your mind and just open your mind to be more connected to the people around you, the community, the world really.”

The young musician also recently spent some time songwriting with producers in Los Angeles. “I found out that I do my best songwriting when I write about things that are personal to me,” Tolbert said.

“My inspiration for the series derived from an examination of the messages expressed by the Black Lives Matter community in protests and rallies,” Hopkins said. “The entries also draw from anecdotes concerning the movement and its connections between my family and me.”

Hopkins plans to pursue a degree in illustration after graduating high school.

“In regard to my future as an artist, the experience at YoungArts influenced me to become more open and vulnerable in my pieces and make my work more genuine,” he said. “Doing this, I’m hoping to leave an impact on my viewers and allow them to evaluate their stance on social injustice.”

Also representing young artists in Greenville, The Fine Arts center had three YoungArts winners this year.

Students Samuele Parrini and Rachel Yi each received merit awards for classical music in violin. Both young musicians submitted concerto and sonata pieces by Bach, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Glazunov, as well as some pieces by contemporary artists.

Laughing, Parrini and Yi both said that preparation for the competition required lots and lots of practice. They mentioned the value of winning an award such as YoungArts and the recognition by colleges that is received. “YoungArts’ goal is to open up opportunities and give support to musicians,” Yi said.

Looking to the future, Yi will pursue music as a career and as a service. “My long-term goal is to be a musician that can bring music to students and the community,” Yi said. “I think before I settle down somewhere I do want to experience the life of a soloist and also chamber music professionally and being able to work with different musicians and see how well I can collaborate with everyone.”

For Yi, music is a way of portraying who she is as a person and what she wants to bring to the world. “I think arts in general gives a freedom in the society that we have.

there can be and what is already there.”

Parrini looks forward to studying music in college and has three different avenues of music he’s considering. “One being a soloist, second being a chamber musician, and the third being an orchestral musician,” he said. “It’s hard to say which one I’d prefer now because I have had a few opportunities in all three aspects, but I’ll just keep growing and figuring out which ones I like more.”

Speaking to the value of art in society, Parrini described music as a language with no words or phrases but feelings. “It’s a great feeling to be able to speak on stage without saying a word,” he said, “to come up with emotions that you would like to portray and then to do your best to share that with an audience.”

Another student winner from The Fine Arts Center, Anna Burkhardt, received the visual arts merit award. The portfolio she submitted for YoungArts consisted mainly of fiber arts along with some other pieces.

With fiber arts, Burkhardt works with a variety of techniques, including textiles, surface design, embroidery, sewing, and weaving. “A lot of times I draw inspiration from my academic classes. Science a lot of times I draw inspiration from, and of course life experiences,” she said. “I’ve recently adopted that to my portfolio. My portfolio evolved more with life experiences and personal things I can incorporate.”

Burkhardt plans to study art in college and build a career from that focusing on fiber arts. “I think [art in the community] is very important. It’s an aspect that has come to define Greenville,” she said. “It’s something that people contribute.”

The National YoungArts Foundation, based in Miami, provides emerging young artists ages 15 to 18 with a strong community of encouragement, opportunity, and support. Chair of the SCGSAH creative writing department, Scott Gould, spoke to the value of a competition such as YoungArts. “It’s important for students at this age working in this kind of environment to see where they stack up with their peers.”

Fifteen artists from Greenville are among the 135 selected for Artisphere’s GE Artists Row for this year’s festival.

More than 1,160 artists applied for the festival, a record for the 14-year-old festival. The 11.6 percent acceptance rate makes Artisphere one of the most selective fine arts festivals in the country.

This year’s festival will be held in downtown Greenville May 11-13.

“Artisphere is one of the major reasons why Greenville has become one of the most thriving art communities in the country,” said Joseph Bradley, the festival’s 2-D mixed media award winner from last year and one of the panel of five jurors who selected this year’s Artist Row participants. “This festival has learned how to successfully integrate with the community to connect artists and patrons in positive and sustainable ways.”

The outdoor festival, which brings thousands of people to downtown Greenville, set records for artists’ sales last year with average sales of $9,150, up from $8,200 the year before. Last year’s artists sold nearly $1.229 million of art, and a Clemson University study put the festival’s economic impact at more than $6.6 million.

The 15 local artists on Artists Row won’t be the only local visual artists participating in the festival. Some will present demonstrations and workshops in the Art Lab, and others will participate in Artists of the Upstate, a juried art show.

In addition to art in a variety of media, Artisphere features food, music, street performances, and activities for children.

Comedians Ryan Brown, Eric Neuman, and Rob Nobles, who will perform at Coffee Underground on Tuesday, love New York City. They honed their comedic skills on the Upper East Side at a club called Comic Strip Live. The club has been home for everyone from Jerry Seinfeld to Dave Chappelle, and Seinfeld even taped a recent comedy special at the club.

“The club became like the comedy home in New York for each of us,” Brown says.

“And over time we cohered into a group.”

“Comic Strip Live has this cool reputation in New York, and it’s kind of a club that took us in as young comics and helped us learn our craft,” Nobles says. “It’s a common thread that’s helped us get close and write together because we understand each other’s styles.”

“It’s become a hub for us,” Neuman

says. “We do this Tuesday open mic where we come and do a show with as low stakes as possible. We come with five minutes of new material that we’ve prepared and perform and then give each other feedback.

That’s been really instrumental to our growth.”

So it’s a bit surprising given their affection for the city and the club that these three comedians have decided to get together for a tour called “Escape From New York,” which takes them out of their comfort zones and to North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

The idea began with Brown’s roots in the South. He’s a North Carolina native who maintained contact with one of his favorite comedy clubs in Raleigh, a place called Goodnights.

“I think it was Eric who said, ‘Hey, we should go to North Carolina and do a show at that club,’” Brown says. “So I reached out and we did our first ‘Escape from New

York’ show. We went down there, did the show, and came back up.”

There are different reasons that the three men wanted to do an expanded version of that one night, and most of them center on finding new audiences and making them better comedians. Both Brown and Neuman admit, however, that it’s something of a release to do comedy outside a hothouse atmosphere.

“New York is like a training ground for comedy,” Brown says. “There are lots of places to perform, and the best comedians in the world come there, so it makes you stronger. But then it’s fun to leave that pressure cooker of comedy and go to these smaller cities and towns where there aren’t a million shows going on every night. I think crowds in those situations are more appreciative; they enjoy having that caliber of comedy come to their town for a night.”

“I think when you’re in New York, it’s weirdly high-pressure because you don’t know who’s around,” Neuman says.

“There are industry people, there are agents, and there are other comics walking around. News travels so fast in that if you have great set, everyone hears about it. And if you have a bad set, everyone hears about it, too. It’s the place you’re least comfortable. There’s a level of relax-

ation with this tour that we don’t get to enjoy in the city. We can just have fun.”

There’s also something to be said for developing a broader comedic approach that will work all over the country, and the only way to do that is by touring.

“A comic that I greatly respect once said to me, ‘You gotta do the road,’” Neuman says. “I didn’t understand it as much then as I do now. New York really doesn’t accurately represent the country or the world.

You can make your friends or people who are similar to you laugh, but that’s not what comedy is about. You want to have as wide a reach as possible. You want to be able to make people who you have nothing in common with laugh. I think traveling around really helps with that.”

FROM THE BIG APPLE TO MUSIC CITY For ‘Brooklyn country’ band The Lone Bellow, moving to Nashville was about family VINCENT HARRIS | ARTS & CULTURE WRITER

When the Brooklyn, N.Y., trio The Lone Bellow released their self-titled debut album in 2013, it garnered some serious buzz and critical acclaim. The passionate, sparkling vocal harmonies of Zach Williams, Kanene Donehey Pipkin, and Brian Elmquist seemed to burst out of the speakers; the songs were insanely catchy combinations of acoustic instrumentation, tightly wound song craft, and genuine emotion, and the whole package was enough to make Entertainment Weekly call The Lone Bellow “one of the top reasons to love country music in 2013.”

Wait, country music? Sure, the band had a bit of Southern twang in their sound, but this isn’t Little Big Town or The Band Perry we’re talking about here. Is “country” a fair description?

about how to label the music.”

In fact, a fan of the band may have come up with a better description than they ever could have.

“I remember one time we were opening for Dwight Yoakam,” Pipkin says, “and we went back to our merch table afterwards to meet people, and we heard two guys talking. One of them said, ‘What kind of music would you call that? It was really good. I really liked it.’ And the other guy said, ‘I guess you’d just called it Brooklyn country music.’ So, if you want to call it country, be my guest, but we’re not going to label it ourselves.”

It might be more difficult not to call The Lone Bellow country now that they’ve moved from Brooklyn to Nashville, Tenn., before recording their newest album, “Walk Into a Storm.” But it wasn’t business that drew the band from The Big Apple to Music City.

“The main motivation was family,” Pipkin says. “We’d heard from a lot of people that we’d met on the road that you can be home more if you’re based out of Nashville, purely because of where it’s located.

You can make these kinds of loops where you always end up back in Nashville as opposed to New York, where you have to be gone for a longer time to make it worth your while.”

Despite that convenience, it was difficult for the group to leave the place that essentially created the band.

“It’s the community that really championed us and gave us the confidence to do this full time,” she says. “And we had

such a beautiful group of friends, so it was difficult to leave that group and the daily inspiration of the city.”

One of the immediate advantages of moving to Nashville was that the band got to record “Walk Into a Storm” with producer Dave Cobb (Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, and Chris Stapleton) in the legendary RCA Studio A, where icons like Dolly Parton once recorded.

“It was incredible,” Pipkin says of the experience. “Dave is such a fun person to work with, and we have a lot of the same musical tastes. You can sit and talk to him about every Beatles recording ever, and he’ll happily talk with you all day. He’s a fun presence in the studio. He’s very energetic. Things happen really quickly, and he’s really good at capturing the birth of an idea. You can hear the kinetic energy of that in his recordings. They sound really live, and really vibrant.”

As for the studio, she says, “Recording at RCA was just a dream. You want to bring everything to the table because you feel so inspired to even be in there, in the place where Dolly Parton recorded ‘Jolene.’ It’s a really inspiring place.”

Since Mavis Staples began using her powerful, soulful voice as part of The Staple Singers in the early 1960s, she has sung about making our country, and our world, a better place. With her father, Pops Staples, behind her on guitar, Staples’ voice soared on classics like “I’ll Take You There,” “Respect Yourself,” and others, carrying messages of love, understanding, and strength in the face of dark times.

It could be argued that this message is more important now than ever, and the Grammy-winning singer, who will perform at the Peace Center on Wednesday, has kept up the fight, releasing a series of solo albums that combine the passionate faith of gospel and the gritty determination of R&B. Staples’ most recent album, last year’s “If All I Was Was Black,” is perhaps her angriest, most emotional solo release. With songs like the title track, “We Go High” (which appropriates former First Lady Michelle Obama’s “When they go low,

R&B icon Mavis Staples’ messages of kindness and understanding continue to resonate with fans, both old and new we go high” catchphrase) and “Who Told You That,” the 78-year-old Staples sounds like she’s still fronting her father’s band, singing with a fiery defiance over wiry, raw funk, soul, and gospel tracks.

“It’s been my life to sing these kinds of songs,” Staples says. “I tell everybody that it’s like my father used to say: ‘Anyone who wants to write a song for us, read the headlines. That will tell you what kind of song we want.’ We want to sing songs about what was going on in the world, and if we could sing a song to make it better, that’s what we wanted to do. That’s what we were about. And this man in our lives, this man up in Washington, D.C., he’s really given us some song titles.”

Staples often uses the word “we” when she talks about her solo work, and it’s because she doesn’t feel like she’s fighting her battles alone. “I talk to Pops and Dr. King,” she says. “I tell my father, ‘Daddy, I’m still here. I’m still doing what you wanted us to do.’ It makes me feel better.”

And that fight, against racism, poverty, cruelty, and a host of other societal ills, can Mavis Staples

be wearying. In fact, Staples says that in some ways, it’s too bad she still has to do it.

“I’ve been doing this since the ’60s, and it’s a shame that I still have to sing these songs,” she says. “I don’t just want to sing these songs; I NEED to sing these songs and be hopeful that they will help somebody.

We need more kindness and understanding.

We know what we need to make it better, if people would just listen to us, and do like we say, we’d have a much better world!”

Whether it’s Staples’ incredible voice or the times we live in, audiences are responding to her message like never before. She’s noticed a whole new crowd at her shows joining her longtime fans.

“We’ve been getting college students,” she says. “Our audience still has older people, our fans that have been there all along. But we have new fans. I’ve gotten some of Wilco’s fans [Jeff Tweedy of Wilco has produced and written songs for three of Staples’ albums, including “If All I Was Was Black”], and people are coming to me telling me they’re playing the records for the babies!”

In fact, it’s the babies that are giving Staples hope that her work is making a difference.

“At one of our recent shows, the whole front of the audience was loaded with little kids, like 5 to 7 years old,” she says.

“And in a quiet moment, one of them just came right up to the stage and said, ‘MAVIS! YOU ROCK!’” Staples howls with laughter thinking of that excited child.

“I thought I was going to fall off the stage!” she says. “I tell you, I’m just the happiest old girl in the world. I couldn’t ask for anything more in my life. It really gives me hope. They get it. And they’re passing it on.”

THE MAGIC OF SONG Herring Chamber Ensemble concert features music to console, celebrate life and singing ARIEL TURNER | STAFF

The Herring Chamber Ensemble, the chamber choral group composed of Greenville Chorale members, will present a threepart program for the two performances of their 21st annual winter concert, featuring music that expresses consolation, celebrates life and singing, and “music that is just plain fun to sing.”

“We have all felt the power of music to reach into our deepest thoughts and feelings,” says Bingham Vick Jr., founder and director of the ensemble. “Sometimes music uplifts us when our spirits are down; sometimes it consoles our souls when we suffer great loss; and occasionally we can revel in the joy and enjoyment of ‘just singing.’ The Herring Ensemble brings together great voices, delightful people, and eager spirits when they sing.

We invite the audience to share this wonderful musical afternoon with us.”

The program opens with an unaccompanied “Requiem” by Canadian composer Eleanor Daley.

“The music and words that Daley bring together create a feeling of celebration for the departed, and a The Herring Chamber Ensemble warm and compassionate embrace for those still living,” Vick says.

Vick says Daley is not well known in the U.S., but her works are widely performed by choral groups in Canada.

“The piece as a whole is quite moving, and the music is challenging,” Vick says.

He says the audience should identify with it quickly, especially those who are currently experiencing loss. The music itself varies from minor to major keys, and Daley uses a variety of jazz chords that creates an expressive, rather than mournful, sound.

“She is forever throwing in these unexpected sounds, in a positive way, to the normal flow of harmonies,” Vick says.

The “music that celebrates life and singing” section begins with a piece composed by a friend of Vick’s in Chicago, “To Sing

in Winter” by Robert Bowker, that muses about the juxtaposition of the dreary weather and the joy of music. “It makes fun of the grayness of winter time,” Vick says.

“Flight Song” by Norwegian composer Kim André Arnesen follows and sums up this section of the program in the first line: “All we are we have found in song,” allowing the listener to get out of themselves and forget the cares of the world.

Two similarly themed works round out the section. Frank Ticheli implores the listener to “Sing, Be, Live, See...” in spite of “scorched earth … war and power,” and an old American folk hymn, arranged by Dr. Ronald Staheli, sums it up: “… Above earth’s lamentation … when tyrants tremble sick with fear … what if my joys and comforts die … though the darkness ‘round me close”… “How can I keep from singing!”

The Salvation Army’s Food Ministries are meeting more than just the need of hunger – they are rehabilitating lives! Jason is currently enrolled in The Salvation Army’s Addiction Recovery Program and serves in the Dining Hall as part of his work-therapy assignment. While serving in the Dining Hall, Jason is learning culinary skills that he can apply in the workforce upon graduation from the Addiction Recovery Program.

Volunteers like June serve weekly in the Dining Hall, preparing and handing out hot meals to Salvation Army shelter residents and the local community in need. Her ministry begins with serving meals and continues with the love and hope she provides to others.

In addition to hot meals served daily from the Dining Hall, The Salvation Army provides food assistance to families in the midst of crisis situations. Over 2,700 families were provided with a box of nonperishable food items last year.

The program closes with homage to the King’s Singers, the allmale vocal ensemble celebrating 50 years in existence. The Herring Chamber Ensemble will perform four of the King’s Singers most popular arrangements: “You are the New Day,” James Taylor’s “That Lonesome Road,” “Short People,” and “I’m a Train.”

Not typical for the winter concert, the program will also feature a guest choir – the Concert Choir from Blue Ridge High School. Because of the snow on Dec. 8, the ensemble was unable to perform at the “Christmas With the Chorale” concert with the Greenville Chorale. Under the direction of Laura Morris (also a singer in the Herring Ensemble), the Blue Ridge Concert Choir will perform three selections from that Christmas program.

To fully embrace your food, you need to know the narrative, says John T. Edge, director of the Southern Foodways Alliance (SFA) since its 1999 founding.

Edge, who recently spoke in Greenville about his newly published book, “The Potlikker Papers,” at a Sunday Sit-Down Supper hosted by M. Judson Booksellers, says slavery, racism, gender inequality, and other social challenges in the South are imprinted on the region in many ways, but especially in the historic cuisine. One example of this phenomenon is the aforementioned Southern dish of black-eyed peas and rice, which was born out of poverty.

SFA, an organization that documents, studies, and explores the diverse food cultures of the changing American South, is the beneficiary of the Feb. 26 guest chef dinner hosted at Jianna, which will feature chefs Michael Kramer (Jianna), Nick Graves (Restaurant 17), and Jason Scholz (Stella’s Southern Bistro/Stella’s Southern Brasserie). Greenville historian John Nolan will also be on hand to share a bit of local history.

“It’s a good thing to bring all of us together and showcase what we do here in the South,” Graves says. “I appreciate what they do.”

Each chef will prepare and serve passed hors d’oeuvres as well as a main dish served family style.

There are no guidelines placed on their menus, but each chef has chosen to showcase different aspects of Southern cuisine, and not just the fine-dining variety.

Kramer says he appreciates the SFA’s focus because it represents all food, from takeout and food trucks to street food and fine dining.

“They don’t just focus on the big chefs but focus on the people that are making an impact in the South,” he says.

And while the menu for the benefit dinner will edge toward fine dining, the ingredients used will be sourced locally and represent the history of our region.

For instance, Scholz is preparing a Crispy Dirty Rice with “schmeared duck liver and spicy sweet pickle relish.” Charleston gold rice will be fried into a small vessel for the duck liver, which on the surface may seem like an elitist dish. The use of organ meats, however, couldn’t be more indicative of a society living in poverty and minimizing waste by using every part of the animal.

Scholz’s Duck Leg Ducketta (with smoked honey caramelized ginger, peach bourbon glaze) will also feature his version of a North African dukkah, a peanut-based mixture of nuts and fragrant spices. Peanuts are a quintessentially Southern and historically complicated ingredient since they were brought to the South by African slaves.

Graves will be featuring grass-fed, grain-finished beef from Apple Brandy Beef in North Wilkesboro, N.C., and Kramer will serve North Carolina oysters, for which Jianna is well known, along with a pasta dish and charred octopus.

Tara McNamara, communications director at the Peace Center, said showing Oscar-nominated short films has become a tradition in recent years. “We’ve presented the Oscar-nominated short films for a few years now, and they are very popular,” McNamara said. “People start asking about them every year, well before we make the announcement.”

Some of the films that will be shown include Pixar animated short “Lou”; “The Eleven O’Clock,” a story where a psychiatrist has a patient who thinks he is also a psychiatrist; “Heroin(e),” a film about West Virginia’s opioid crisis through the eyes of three women; and “Dear Basketball,” an animated short written and narrated by retired NBA star Kobe Bryant.

“Charlotte’s Web”

Greenville Little Theatre will put on a production of “Charlotte’s Web” for younger audiences.

Based on the best-selling children’s book by the same name, “Charlotte’s Web” is the story of a pig named Wilber who lives on a farm and befriends Charlotte, a small spider who teaches Wilber how to have fun in life.

Jamie Ann Walters, who plays Charlotte, said the story is a great tale for children because of its themes and laughs. “The costumes are fun, and the reaction from the children never gets old for me,” Walters said. “They are entranced from beginning to end.”

“Charlotte’s Web” is this year’s touring production currently being performed at schools by the GLT resident acting company. By the end of the school year, GLT on Tour will have performed over 100 performances of this beloved classic. –Robert Hull

South Carolina Children’s Theatre’s 2nd Stage is producing “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” with a fun twist. This is a unique adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ classic novel in which all the roles are done by two performers.

Husband and wife Mat and Mallory Pelligrino make up the entire cast.

They play Lucy and Peter, who are now adults, as the two recount their adventures in Narnia to the audience. “This will be our first time acting together,” Mallory Pelligrino said.

The Pelligrinos will reenact classic scenes from the story with common household items such as an umbrella, a coatrack, and a lamp.

“These props will be how Mat and I get into different roles,” Mallory Pelligrino said. “For example, when I become the witch, I will grab some curtains that turn into robes.”

Memorable characters such as Aslan the lion, Mr. Tumnus, the White Witch, and Mr. Beaver are all recreated in this minimalist production. –Robert Hull

The Apartment Club’s brand of tight, blissfully melodic indie-rock began as a solo project, with singer/guitarist Acen Herron writing and recording songs in his apartment while attending college in Tennessee. The rest of the band, drummer Geoffrey Kelly, bassist Nate Kelly, and, later, guitarist Jacob Bagwell, came together when Herron moved back to his native Spartanburg. “I’d send stuff I recorded on my laptop back to my friends in Spartanburg, and so when I moved back down we started playing shows,” Herron says. “I’d already played in countless https://theaptclub.bandcamp.com/ bands with Geoffrey and Nathaniel, so it was a perfect match.”

The band’s just-out self-titled EP was recorded in five 12-hour days at Legitimate Business Studio in Greensboro with producer/engineer Kris Hilbert. In order to break the stress of the recording grind, Hilbert took the band on a culinary tour of the city during their dinner breaks.

“That whole week turned into a foodie excursion,” Herron says. “Kris knew all the best spots in town and we’d look forward to where he was going to take us for dinner.” –Vincent Harris environment. Caroline Keller’s professional career started out with a bang. One of those performers who was singing before she could even talk, Keller was raised in the church and initially sang a hybrid of contemporary Christian and country music, a style that was popular enough to put her debut album and four singles into the top 10 on the Christian music charts. It was an auspicious beginning. Leaders Of The Shift w/ Emily Musolino

It’s hard to describe the music that the Manhattan trio Leaders Of The Shift makes without using the terms “mood” or “atmosphere.” Taking the adventurous spirit of progressive rock but eschewing the instrumental showing off, the band takes their time to build songs around the subtle, shifting rhythms of bassist Ben Geis and drummer MJ Lambert and the layered, textured guitar of John Shannon. “You could call it ‘progressive,’ but there’s an element of that that’s misleading because what we do is song based,” Shannon says. “In that sense, it’s more rock ‘n’ roll than prog, because prog seems to be more about instruments being as important as the song. Board certified since 2015, Garrett-Nelson was elected a trustee of the Board for Certification of Genealogists in 2016 and is a frequent speaker at national and local venues. African American genealogical research is particularly challenging due to the lack of individuals’ names in census records and other documents prior to 1870. 4) Defendant Williams Thomas Wiggins (Wiggins) is, upon information and belief, a resident of Greenville County.

5) Defendant Wiggins sold a vehicle to Carmax, receiving a check in the amount of $20,500.00.

6) Defendant Wiggins then took the check to Plaintiff and attempted to cash it. Plaintiff contacted Carmax and was assured by an authorized representative of Carmax and/ or CBS that the check was good.

7) In reliance on Carmax’s and/or CBS’s assurance that the check was good, Plaintiff gave Defendant Wiggins cash in return for his endorsing the check to Plaintiff.

8) Plaintiff then attempted to cash the check but was told that the check was not good because Carmax and/or CBS had canceled the purchase of the vehicle, returned the vehicle to Wiggins and stopped payment on the check.

9) Plaintiff is entitled to a judgment against Carmax and/ or CBS for the amount it paid

to Wiggins, under the doctrine of promissory estoppel, in an amount to be determined by the trier of fact.

FOR A SECOND CAUSE OF ACTION 10) All previous consistent allegations are repeated herein.

11) Carmax and/or CBS had a duty to Plaintiff to provide correct information regarding the check issued to Wiggins.

12) Carmax and/or CBS breached this duty by informing Plaintiff that the check was good, then stopping payment on the check.

13) As a result of Carmax’s and/ or CBS’s breach of duty, Plaintiff was damaged in that it gave cash to Defendant Wiggins but was unable to cash the check that it received in return.

14) Plaintiff is entitled to judgment against Carmax and/ or CBS in an amount to be determined by the trier of fact.

FOR A THIRD CAUSE OF ACTION 15) All previous consistent allegations are repeated herein.

16) Carmax’s and/or CBS’s actions are deliberate, unfair and deceptive actions made in the course of trade and commerce.

17) These actions are capable of repetition and damage the interests of the public.

18) Plaintiff is entitled to judgment against Carmax and/ or CBS under Section 39 – 5 – 10, et seq., SC Code for damages as provided in that statute.

FOR A FOURTH CAUSE OF ACTION 19) All previous consistent allegations are repeated herein 20) Plaintiff and Wiggins entered into a contract whereby Plaintiff provided cash to Wiggins in return for Wiggins’ endorsement of the above – mentioned check and giving the check to Plaintiff.

21) Wiggins then received the return of his vehicle from Carmax and/ or CBS and kept the money he received from Plaintiff in return for the check.

22) Wiggins is unjustly enriched by being allowed to keep the cash obtained from Plaintiff and also the vehicle that he had sold to Carmax and/or CBS. 23) Plaintiff is entitled to judgment against Defendant Wiggins in an amount to be determined by the trier of fact.
