GREENVILLE’S PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE A Q&A with Mayor Knox White WORDS BY CINDY LANDRUM | PHOTO BY WILL CROOKS When asked what the most important event of 2017 was in the city of Greenville, Mayor Knox White had an answer that might surprise people.

Rather than name one of the many huge developments being built downtown or the focus on increasing affordable housing, White said it was moving the city’s public works to a brand-new facility on Fairforest Way. “I think the importance of moving public works was understated,” he said. “Maybe it’s not as dramatic as tearing down the Camperdown Bridge, but it will be just as transformative.”

White recently talked to the Greenville Journal about the past and the future of downtown.

What was the single most important decision made in the past 10-15 years that helped transform downtown Greenville and make it what it is today?

Reclaiming the Reedy River. We can see more clearly now that when Falls Park opened in 2004, everything changed. Suddenly, our city had a signature attraction. It’s hard to imagine now, but the West End was once mostly boarded-up buildings and dangerous.

The river was barely noticed. Falls Park changed that. The park brought vibrancy and people to the streets of the West End and, in quick order, major capital investment, which continues today. Above all, the park and river give Greenville a unique identity and personality all its own.

If you think about it, the core of downtown’s success is built around, simply, trees and water. I really believe that how we stay focused on those two simple elements is a good way to measure our success going forward.

Why did Greenville succeed in revitalizing its downtown when so many other cities failed?

I’d attribute it to good planning and great partnerships. Partnerships come easy in Greenville, but that is not the case everywhere. Our downtown is testimony to a lot of people doing their part to build a city of which we can all be proud. It’s everyone from people in the restaurant and hospitality community renovating old buildings to local developers addressing the need for the right mix of residential and office development.

On the planning side, we have a formula, and we stick to it. We recognized that’s all about having a Main Street that doesn’t go dark after 5 p.m. and on weekends. A lot of cities took a lot longer to realize that. That is why we focused so much in the early years on attracting residents to downtown. Residents ensure activity on the street after hours and on weekends. Now we have plenty of apartments (once there were few!), and now we have to focus on having the right diversity of residential. But achieving a critical mass of people living near Main Street has been crucial to our success.

All the while, the other goal has been to keep the downtown walkable and “peoplefocused.” This, too, sets us apart. We have filled the downtown with public art, preserved historic buildings, and done a multitude of things to make the experience of being downtown safe and pleasant. All of these things are done in the spirit of staying true to and enhancing our city’s unique personality.

What are the top three challenges facing Greenville in the future, and why?

I’d put all three under the heading of “managing our growth.”

First, we’ve learned what all successful cities are discovering: A growing city has to work

hard to keep housing affordable. It’s not only a matter of demand pushing up prices. For several decades, we have worked in partnership with many neighborhoods to remove blighted rental housing and replace it with new, affordable owner-occupied housing. These neighborhoods are much improved, but now we find a severe lack of good rentals. So we need more clean, safe rentals, and we need a wide array of owner-occupied housing at different price points. This is important because we want our city to be a place for everyone. Our tradition of public-private partnerships and our willingness to act boldly will be tested.

Second, a growing city (fourth-fastest in the U.S.) means more people and more traffic. While we don’t own or control many of the major roadways, it’s our duty to explore smarter ways to help people move around. We are investing in new and better-synchronized traffic lights on key corridors. But the best example of what we can do about traffic congestion is the new Woodruff Road bypass. This city-designed road will parallel Woodruff and allow residents to have direct access to Costco, Magnolia Park, and other popular shopping destinations without getting on Woodruff at all. It will be ready by next fall.

Supporting better public transportation is another role we will continue to play.

Third, a growing city must build more park and green space. It’s now or never for future generations. Our new park along the Reedy will make the river cleaner, expand recreation opportunities for families, and serve as a model for how we will use city-owned property to build more affordable housing. When the trucks rolled out of our old and decrepit public works facility last month, it received little fanfare. But we may well look back and see that this was an event as momentous as the removal of the Camperdown Bridge over the falls. Both opened the door to transformational change along the river and for West Greenville. Like Falls Park, the new park will offer the kind of balance we need to deal with the growth we are experiencing.

If Greenville accomplishes just one thing in 2018, what does it need to be, and why?

I say it needs to be how we make real progress in addressing the three “growth challenges” I just described.

Greenville has a lot going for it. What’s missing?

I don’t think the city or the county gets high marks for public transportation. We are much improved, but not where we need to be. Greenlink is clean and efficient, but hourly bus service is not practical for people trying to get to work or anywhere else. We have to do better. Our partnership with the county is excellent, and I think we are on the same sheet of music here. The city’s new expanded trolley service can also be a template for how shorter distances may be handled in the future, at least for neighborhoods in the city.

I’d also say that the city needs to do a much better job of annexation. The city has a lot to offer to nearby neighborhoods — including better services and, in many cases, lower taxes (to their surprise). Annexation is another way of dealing with growth for everyone’s benefit.

Finally, I’d like to see even more attention paid to good architecture and design. Even with our guidelines and vetting by our citizen-led boards, too many apartments are just plain ugly or vanilla. The good news is that some more recent projects have looked better and our design staff has been more vigilant. Let’s keep challenging our builders and developers to raise the bar. Greenville should set the standard for good design in both the public and private realm.

In Greenville, the familiar — development in and around downtown, the new City Park, and affordable housing — and the not-so-familiar marked the biggest stories of 2017

CITY PARK Moving a city’s public works department from one site to another typically is not all that newsworthy. But Greenville’s new public works facility on Fairforest Way was so much more than a new home for the city’s fleet of dump trucks and other heavy equipment. It was the first step in the creation of a signature park on the west side of downtown, a project that city officials say will be as transformative for that part of Greenville as Falls Park was to downtown. The city has set aside $20 million over the next decade to pay for the park. City Park, as it is being called now, is expected to include a great lawn, a “sprayground” water feature, a picnic area, basketball courts, and a veterans memorial and other related features. The park project also includes the transformation of Welborn Street into a pedestrian promenade.

Groundbreaking could be held as early as spring.

Greenville’s Housing Trust Fund, established in November to address an affordable-housing shortage, will focus on projects serving households with incomes between $15,000 and $55,000. A study completed by CZB, an Alexandria, Va.-based urban planning and neighborhood development consulting firm, showed the city is short more than 2,500 affordable-housing units. Last spring, the Greenville City Council voted to use $2 million of the city’s fund balance to increase the amount of affordable housing in the city. That money will be combined with $1 million from philanthropic, corporate, and charitable sources. The consultant said households that make $55,000 a year or more could readily participate in Greenville’s housing market. But teachers and first responders, especially those who are early in their careers, are among those who struggle to find anything affordable in the market.

CITY COUNCIL ELECTIONS Greenville City Council has a decidedly different look after an unusual year in 2017 in which all three of the seats up for election were contested. Lillian Brock Flemming, the longtime incumbent who has represented District 2 since 1981, was elected to another term, defeating challenger and commercial banker Matt Cotner. Some observers said the race personified what is happening in the gentrifying district with Flemming representing the longtime residents and Cotner the newcomers, although he has lived in Greenville for 16 years.

While Cotner’s supporters turned out in numbers that would have been large enough to win the seat in years past, it wasn’t enough this year as Flemming’s base turned out in even bigger numbers. The two other winners — Russell Stall and Wil Brasington — were political newcomers but not strangers to leadership roles in the community. Stall, a Democrat who won one of the Council’s at-large seats, is the retired founder and former executive director of Greenville Forward, a nonprofit established to facilitate Vision 2025. Brasington won the Republican primary for District 4 and had no opposition in the general election. Brasington is a former president of the Alta Vista Neighborhood Association and successfully fought a proposed Walmart.

DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT Development in and around downtown Greenville continued to make headlines in 2017.

The year’s biggest development, though, was a building that won’t get built — an office building that Centennial American Properties had proposed for 55 Camperdown Way. The proposal, which was approved by the city’s Design Review Board, drew immediate criticism.

Now, instead of having a four-story brick-and-glass office building mere steps from the historic Main Street bridge, the property will remain green space through a permanent conservation easement. Work on the rest of the Camperdown project continues. The $200 million redevelopment of the block of South Main Street where The Greenville News has made its home since 1969 includes office space, a hotel, multifamily units, retail, and restaurants.

Another transformative development, NorthPointe, is also under construction. The mixed-use development by Central Realty Holdings, located at Wade Hampton Boulevard, East Stone Avenue, and Church Street, is in the early stages of site work and reconfiguring affected roadways. The development will be anchored by a Harris Teeter grocery store. It will also have 284 apartment units, restaurants, retail, and a fitness center.

BASKETBALL 2017 was a year for basketball in Greenville. The removal of the Confederate flag from the Statehouse grounds in Columbia paved the way for Greenville to host the SEC women’s basketball tournament, won by the eventual national champion the University of South Carolina. The flag’s removal also allowed Greenville to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA men’s tournament after the games were moved from North Carolina because of that state’s “bathroom bill.” Both organizations must have liked what they saw while they were here. The SEC women’s tournament will be held in Greenville for three years beginning in 2019. The NCAA men’s tournament will return to Greenville in 2022, and the women’s regional will be held at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in 2020.

As the city of Greenville continues to grow and change, so does its thriving community. This year, Greenville celebrated special events, like August’s solar eclipse, and important anniversaries, like the 85th year of Bon Secours St. Francis. Among these significant milestones, the individuals and organizations that work toward bettering our community are of the utmost importance. Here are some of this year’s most notable community events, improvements, milestones, and changes.

A RARE SOLAR ECLIPSE PASSES THROUGH THE UPSTATE

A total solar eclipse brought Greenville into complete darkness for about two minutes on Aug. 21. Witnessing a phenomenon like this is often a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and this was evident through the numerous tourists who arrived in town for the big moment and the events planned in celebration.

The Upstate was a prime destination for the eclipse, because Greenville was in the path of totality. Approximately $12.3 million in revenue was generated for the city over the long weekend, while a study by the state Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism reported that the eclipse had a $269 million economic impact in South Carolina.

Greenville also gained a lot of attention in the national spotlight and from visitors, and VisitGreenvilleSC President Chris Stone deemed this the most important aspect of the eclipse. “They experienced two wows, the eclipse and Greenville, S.C.,” he said. “There’s no substitute for making friends. Exposure is such a key part. People were able to touch, feel, and experience Greenville.” Greenville will not see another total solar eclipse until 2078, and those who were in the Upstate on Aug. 21 will have a memory of the city they won’t soon forget.

THE GREENVILLE SWAMP RABBITS FIND THEIR PLACE IN THE COMMUNITY When the Greenville Road Warriors switched their name to the Greenville Swamp Rabbits in August 2015, a lot more than just the mascot changed. By changing their name, they entirely reinvented their image and became a household Chris Lewis, Greenville name in the Greenville community. Swamp Rabbits games became an activity for all Photo by Will Crooks ages, regardless of one’s interest in or knowledge of hockey.

But the Swamp Rabbits organization does much more for the community than just offer a source of entertainment. They hold a variety of after-school programs to promote health and fitness, anti-bullying, and reading, and this year the team participated in about 200 mascot and player appearances. The team also holds promotional games throughout the season to support local nonprofits and charitable causes.

MURAL AT BEREA STATION SHOWCASES COMMUNITY’S HISTORY The mural at Berea Station was in the works for several years before its completion this spring.

The mural, entitled “Berea, A Look Back,” served as a canvas to remember the old ways of Berea, while simultaneously celebrating the new. The mural was a collaboration among Berea Station Events Inc., artist Adam Schrimmer of Blank Canvas Mural Co., and Berea High School students.

The students conducted interviews with longtime residents of Berea to capture the community’s oral history. From those stories, they helped conceptualize a visual representation of Berea, which Schrimmer then turned into a cohesive design. He painted the mural with continued help from the Berea High School students. By including the students in the process, the mural brought together both the past and future of Berea, and it also showcased the community’s talents and people.

ROPER MOUNTAIN PULLS THE PLUG ON HOLIDAY LIGHTS When the lights go out at Roper Mountain Science Center after this holiday season, it will be for the final time.

After 26 years, organizers with the Rotary Club of Greenville and Roper Mountain Science Center have decided to discontinue the Holiday Lights program due to a steady decline in attendance. When Holiday Lights started over two decades ago, it was one of the only Christmas shows in the Upstate. But that’s no longer the case. Both the Photo by Will Crooks Rotary Club and the science center felt that this was the year to end Holiday Lights on a positive note in order to preserve its legacy.

The program initially started with only 12 light displays and has now grown to more than 70, the most iconic being the 97-foot Buck Mickel star, which stands at the top of the mountain with more than 2,500 lights. Over the years, Holiday Lights has raised more than $2.5 million for science education and community service, in addition to providing entertainment to families. Once the current season is over, Roper Mountain will auction off the light displays. The event’s last night will be on Dec. 30, 2017.

BON SECOURS ST. FRANCIS CELEBRATES 85 YEARS Almost everything about Greenville has changed since St. Francis opened its doors in 1932, but the health system’s dedication to helping those in the surrounding community has not.

In 1921, the Salvation Army agreed to assist Greenville’s textile executives in building and equipping a hospital to serve cotton mill village residents. When the Great Depression hit, the Sisters of St. Francis were asked to come to Greenville to run the hospital.

St. Francis was the first hospital in Greenville to have an ambulance and the first hospital in the Upstate with digital mammography. St. Francis is focused on more than just physical health, but rather a holistic health that addresses housing, hunger, education, and workforce development, and they tackle these issues by partnering with other organizations around the Upstate. “We look at what the great needs in the community are by doing community health needs assessments. Our ministry is done in collaboration with the community,” said Alex Garvey, senior vice president of mission for Bon Secours St. Francis Health System. “The greatest ministry is when a community’s greatest desire intersects with the greatest need.”

BUSINESS Expansion was a common theme this year.

While downtown Greenville continues to build up as much as out, downtown Spartanburg also joined in with the opening of South Carolina’s first AC Hotel. BMW announced its plan to invest $600 million to expand BMW Manufacturing Co., creating 1,000 jobs in five years, and Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport’s five-year, $125-million renovation wrapped in May, increasing capacity and amenities.

Not to be outdone, Mauldin development may soon be ramping up to the tune of 1 million square feet of mixeduse property. And the leaders of the Iron Yard, the software education firm that closed 15 of its campuses earlier this year, have returned with a new coding school in Greenville that should launch early in the new year.

FORMER IRON YARD LEADERS TO LAUNCH NEW CODING SCHOOL IN GREENVILLE The Iron Yard’s unexpected announcement that it would be closing up shop earlier this year left many in the local tech industry questioning the role and future of coding schools. But four months later, two of the company’s former executives, including founder and CEO Peter Barth, announced their plan to open a new coding school in downtown Greenville.

The school, known as Carolina Code School, will offer a 12-week, full-time, immersive webdevelopment course to prepare college students and professionals for a career in software development – no coding experience required. The course, which costs $13,999, will be offered six times a year and accommodate up to 20 students per cohort. Those accepted into the course will study the basics of front-end and back-end web development for eight weeks and then focus on a programming language (Java, JavaScript, Ruby, etc.) of their choice.

“Our goal is to prepare students with the skills they need for careers in software development,” Barth said. “We’re not only going to teach them the basics of coding. We’re going to make sure they can actually apply what they’ve learned outside of the classroom.” Carolina Code School plans to open its doors and start training students in early 2018. –Andrew Moore

HUGHES INVESTMENTS ANNOUNCES CENTERPOINT MAULDIN DEVELOPMENT Greenville developer Phil Hughes of Hughes Investments announced in August that he plans to develop an urban village along Interstate 385 in Mauldin with at least 1 million square feet of new apartments, offices, shopping, dining, lodging, and entertainment, including a public park with an amphitheater.

The 40-acre site is bordered by I-385, Holland Road, Bridges Road, and a Greenville Health System distribution center.

With help from Mauldin, Hughes intends to connect the development to the Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail via a pedestrian bridge over the interstate.

Mauldin officials said they’ve agreed to provide public infrastructure — landscaped streets with sidewalks and water and sewer service — and pay for it with property-tax revenue generated by the development. Hughes said he intends to develop the entire village — estimated to cost $100 million — over 18 months. Construction of the first phase is not expected to be completed until 2020.

An office building that Hughes developed on the property for Charter Communications 16 years ago would be incorporated into the village.

A conceptual site plan shows nine mixed-use complexes along both sides of a main street with retail space on the ground level and apartments or office space on upper floors. It also shows locations for two hotels and a movie theater.

BMW ANNOUNCES EXPANSION

During a year that saw Volvo commit to building a plant in Berkeley County, South Carolina’s first automaker sweetened its investment in the Upstate.

German automaker BMW Group announced June 26 that it will invest $600 million to expand Spartanburg County-based BMW Manufacturing Co. and create 1,000 jobs by 2022.

The announcement was made at the company’s Start of Communications event, or unveiling, of its next-generation X3 at the local plant.

BMW’s Chairman Harald Krueger said $200 million of the investment would be for training and further education for the plant’s associates. The automaker also provided details for a nationwide training program.

The additional jobs will bring the plant’s employment to almost 10,000 people within the next five years.

BMW’s original investment in the plant, which opened in 1994, was $600 million, and the automaker hoped to create 1,900 jobs and eventually produce about 150,000 cars per year.

The facility has grown to become BMW’s largest plant by volume in the world.

Today, it represents a nearly $8 billion investment, encompassing more than 5 million square feet, with total production nearing 4 million vehicles.

The annual production capacity of the plant, which is the manufacturing hub of BMW’s X3, X4, X5, X6, and soon-to-be X7 Sports Activity Vehicles, has grown to about 450,000 vehicles per year. –Trevor Anderson

AC HOTEL SPARTANBURG OPENS After more than two years of construction, South Carolina’s first hotel bearing Marriott’s modern, European-inspired AC brand opened Dec. 14 in downtown Spartanburg.

The $20 million, 10-story, 100,000-squarefoot hotel at 225 W. Main St. boasts 114 guest rooms and a plethora of amenities, including a rooftop restaurant, Level 10, owned and operated by Greenville-based Rick Erwin Dining Group.

Its lobby and second floor are a showplace for more than 40 pieces of art from The Johnson Collection’s portfolio of works from Black Mountain College, an experimental arts school that operated from 1933 to 1957 in Black Mountain, N.C. Three meeting rooms that offer a combined 2,662 square feet of meeting space are named for some of the college’s leaders — Anni and Josef Albers, Ruth Asawa, and Kenneth Noland.

Spartanburg business leaders credited the hotel as a major driver of the momentum that has attracted a spate of new dining and retail establishments, residential units, and other development projects to downtown during the past two years.

GSP WRAPS UP WINGSPAN Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) officially wrapped up its five-year, $125 million main terminal renovation nicknamed Project WINGSPAN in May. GSP officials said the project has increased the airport’s capacity to 4 million passengers per year.

In addition to bringing a of new food, beverage, and retail concessions to the terminal, the project resulted in new parking options, art installations, centralized security screening, administrative offices, conference center, and a new airside garden.

GSP’s President and CEO Dave Edwards said in May that the airport’s fares were lower than its nearest competitor, Charlotte Douglas International Airport. GSP has also gained back most of the business that was being lost to Atlanta.

Airport officials are working on a master plan that will be completed in 2018.

At least $100 million will be invested in new projects during the next few years that will continue to improve the airport’s passenger and cargo business.

During the past year, GSP also completed the renovation of an existing hangar for PSA Airlines, launched its self-run fixed-base operator Cerulean Aviation, and announced an expansion of the Upstate’s “Atlantic Bridge,” the air cargo service between GSP and FrankfurtHahn Airport operated by Senator International. –Trevor Anderson

A failing dam threatens to contaminate drinking water for thousands of people. Pollution in the Reedy River causes a shortage of recreational access points for Greenville County residents. And a raging wildfire births ecological wonders at Table Rock State Park just months after destroying thousands of acres.

The year 2017 has seen no shortage of environmental disasters and breakthroughs. In our annual Year in Review report, we’re presenting developments that hold profound implications for the region — and world — going forward. These are the Greenville Journal’s top environmental stories of the year.

Lake Conestee is one step closer to causing one of the worst environmental disasters in the Upstate since the 1996 Colonial Pipeline spill, which dumped nearly 1 million gallons of diesel fuel into the Reedy River.

The lake, which is on the Reedy River near Mauldin, holds about 2.8 million tons of sediment that’s been polluted with heavy Dave Hargett. Photo by Will Crooks metals like arsenic, pesticides, and cancercausing chemical compounds. The toxins are thought to have been discharged from the textile mills, coal plants, and dyeing operations that were once located along the Reedy River. The toxins eventually mixed with the river’s sediment and flowed downstream to Lake Conestee, where they now sit behind a 125-year-old stone masonry dam that’s quickly failing.

“Failure would be catastrophic,” said Dave Hargett, founder of the Conestee Foundation.

Within 48 hours of the dam’s failure, it would release the lake’s toxic sediment into the Reedy River, where it would eventually float downstream to Boyd Pond in Laurens and Lake Greenwood, which provides drinking water for more than 40,000 Greenwood County residents. Now, the Conestee Foundation, the nonprofit that purchased the lake property in 2000, is trying to prevent the dam’s failure and has received $185,000 from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control to identify a long-term solution.

FIRE GIVES BIRTH TO A SPRING TRANSFORMATION FOR TABLE ROCK, PINNACLE MOUNTAIN

In November 2016, the S.C. Forestry Commission announced that a small campfire had quickly grown into a raging wildfire on the side of Pinnacle Mountain in Pickens County. The fire grew larger and larger for several weeks, burning acreage and causing smoke to inundate the Upstate. The fire, which was contained a month later, burned more than 10,000 acres and cost $4.8 million. But it also had ecological benefits, according to Joe Lemeris, a resource management biologist for the state Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism. “People forget that wildfire is natural. It’s nature’s way of clearing out the old undergrowth to make room for the new,” he said. “The fire is already providing countless ecological benefits for the mountain.”

For instance, the forest floor, once scorched and barren, is now covered in leaves that provide erosion control and nutrients. It also provides a prime research opportunity for Lemeris, who has partnered with researchers at Clemson University and other schools to establish photo-monitoring stations across Pinnacle Mountain and other areas within Table Rock State Park. The researchers plan to study footage from the cameras this spring to better understand how the fire benefited the mountain’s landscape.

HOW THE REEDY RIVER’S WATER QUALITY IS HINDERING RECREATION OUTSIDE THE CITY

Despite its unhealthy amounts of pollution over the years, the Reedy River has become one of downtown Greenville’s most treasured spots for recreation. Every year, thousands congregate around the river’s scenic shoal and waterfall at Falls Park. And thousands more enjoy sports and various recreational activities along the river at Cleveland Park and Lake Conestee Nature Park.

But many residents believe the river needs more access points outside the city. The Reedy begins in Travelers Rest and meanders through the city of Greenville to Lake Greenwood. The upper portion of the river’s 75-mile path includes the urban areas of the cities of Greenville, Mauldin, Simpsonville, and Fountain Inn. Unfortunately, the river has to be clean enough for local governments to promote recreation and create public access points. Since the 1900s, the river has experienced severe pollution from nearby textile mills, sewage discharges, and runoff from increased urbanization. Now much of the river is listed by the state as “impaired,” a designation that signals possible health risks and causes local governments to prohibit swimming, kayaking, and other recreational activities. Luckily, partners ranging from regional conservation groups to local governments are collaborating to combat further contamination of the river.

URBAN BEEKEEPING BLOOMS IN GREENVILLE

About three-fourths of the world’s food crops depend on pollination, according to a report released by the United Nations Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. But the number of managed honeybee colonies in the United States has declined from 5 million to 2.5 million since the 1940s because of various threats – invasive species, diseases, pesticides, and habitat destruction.

Luckily, Greenville residents are beginning to raise honeybees in their backyards to help boost the declining population. “When you think about all the colonies that are dying off, it’s hard to say whether or not I’m actually impacting the global population,” said Matt Putnam, who started keeping bees at his residence off Highland Drive in 2015. “I think education is a bigger component for me. I’m sort of an ambassador for the species.”

There are several benefits that beekeeping can provide to people and the environment.

Beekeepers can collect up to $200 worth of honey from each hive they maintain. And keeping bees is good for the environment because it aids in the pollination of nearby fruits, vegetables, and plants. “Bees are sort of the new backyard chickens,” said Jennifer Tsuruda, a beekeeping specialist at Clemson University.

BEHIND THE SCENES, THE GREENVILLE ZOO WORKS TO SAVE ANIMALS WORLDWIDE

Over the past century, American zoos have played a crucial role in saving hundreds of species from extinction. While most of the work has stemmed from breeding, more and more zoos are funding conservation in the field or even starting their own conservation programs.

The Greenville Zoo, for instance, has spent more than $300,000 on conservation over the past seven years. In 2010, the zoo’s conservation committee launched the Quarters for Conservation program to meet accreditation standards by creating a funding source for local and global conservation efforts. For each admission purchase, visitors receive a 25-cent token that can be inserted into a kiosk at the zoo’s entrance to vote for one of five conservation programs, which include efforts to help the Fijian crested iguana, Sumatran orangutan, Chilean flamingo, Amur leopard, and Angolan Colobus monkey. The zoo has also since launched an annual grant program and lecture series to promote conservation. Together, these efforts will help to ensure the health and longevity of countless species across the globe.

MIKE SABLONE TAKES CHARGE AT THE WAREHOUSE THEATRE

During his first full season at the artistic helm of the Warehouse Theatre, Mike Sablone didn’t shy away from heavy topics. The theater, for instance, examined gentrification through “Clybourne Park” and gay marriage through “The Cake.”

Sablone got his start in regional theater but spent much of his career before Greenville in New York and Los Angeles. He was production/development director for actor John Krasinski’s Sunday Night Productions and was executive director of the 2016 film “The Hollars” and the 2012 film “Promised Land.”

Bob Jones University’s on-campus Museum & Gallery closed for a two-year renovation in February and its Heritage Green location closed permanently. The building that houses the M&G is 70 years old and water has penetrated its walls, damaging some of the interior walls. Renovation work includes the sealing of the outside walls, replacement of a number of interior walls, and installation of a new heating, air, and ventilation system. The museum could reopen in late 2018 or early 2019.

The M&G of Bob Jones University is widely recognized as one of the finest collections of religious art in the Southeast and perhaps the nation. As for the Heritage Green location, a new museum will take its place. The Carolina Music Museum will feature a collection of pianos and harpsichords owned by Tom Strange. The collection of vintage keyboards has been stored in Strange’s house in Easley.

THE MCCALLAS AND THE GLT CELEBRATE 25 YEARS

Allen and Suzanne McCalla weren’t sure how long their tenure was going to last at the Greenville Little Theatre. When they were hired in 1993, the theater was in trouble. Debt climbed and season subscriptions plummeted after a series of interim directors and a new artistic director who alienated audiences. The board said it would take care of the debt if the McCallas would take care of the audiences. In the 25 years since, they’ve produced more than 180 shows and tripled attendance.

‘HAMILTON’ IN 2018

One of Greenville’s biggest theater stories of the year won’t actually happen until next year. “Hamilton,” the wildly popular Broadway musical that uses hip-hop to tell the story of the United States’ first secretary of the treasury and Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, will headline the Peace Center’s 2018-19 Broadway series.

There’s a crop of great young bands writing, recording, and playing shows — bands like Hugger Mugger, Tom Angst, Apricot Blush, and Phat Lip. There are more places to play, thanks to the opening of the Tipsy Music Pub and the Velo Fellow’s new listening room. And Sit N’ Spin studio moved into a state-of-the-art new recording space but made it a point to keep their services affordable. Here are the best overall musical moments and places of 2017. I hope there’s more to come in 2018.

There was no better expression of pure emotion than Hugger Mugger’s debut, released just as 2017 was coming to an end. A maelstrom of guitars and electronics swirls around singer/guitarist Cassie Posey’s raw, passionate wail and the torrential music reflects the lyrics’ themes of confusion, exhilaration, and pain. If it’s possible for music to serve as an unfiltered expression of a person’s state of mind, it’s happening on this album.

BEST ALBUM (REGIONAL): “…& I’M FINE TODAY,” SUSTO SUSTO’s first album, a collection of cosmic country-rock infused with a sense of dark mystery, was so great that following it up was going to be a challenge, but singer/songwriter Justin Osborne rose to the challenge by going big. “…& I’m Fine Today” brings in elegant strings, layered backing vocals, and the occasional bit of electronics, all of which serve a group of outstanding songs that rest comfortably at the crossroads of country and rock. If it isn’t a masterpiece, it’s damn close.

BEST ARTISTS (LOCAL): JIM ROLLINS AND MATT REYNOLDS Sometimes it takes the tragic, senseless death of someone for people to realize how truly remarkable they were, and the Upstate got an unwelcome double dose of that realization this year. Both Jim Rollins (banjo player and vocalist for the West End String Band) and Matt “Curfew” Reynolds (a singer-songwriter who also served as a roadie for the late Col. Bruce Hampton and tour manager for the Dark Star Orchestra) died unexpectedly, leaving a couple of deep wounds in the local music scene and nationally, as well. Both men were beloved by many, and they will be missed enormously.

VENUE OF THE YEAR: RADIO ROOM, 110 POINSETT HIGHWAY, GREENVILLE Wes Gilliam, David Raghib, and Geoffrey Cannada are not going to give up until the Radio Room is Greenville’s equivalent of Columbia’s New Brookland Tavern or Charleston’s Pour House. In other words, they’re going to keep bringing in adventurous national bands and supporting the local scene in their new location. The work they did this past year, both in terms of their relocation and their booking, has been fantastic.

BEST SHOW (SMALL VENUE): PHAT LIP EP RELEASE SHOW, GOTTROCKS, JUNE 2 This show was a perfect combination of a dynamite band (Kelly Jo Ramirez’ new Latin pop project, Phat Lip), a red-hot crowd, and the perfect setting. A packed house spent a joyous couple of hours dancing to a tight band with one of the best singers in the Upstate, and the show was one of the best possible examples of what a local music scene can be.

BEST SHOW (LARGE VENUE): ANN WILSON, PEACE CENTER, MARCH 23 Ann Wilson is without question one of the best singers in the history of rock music, and she proved it again at this show, which featured a generous helping of Heart hits like “Alone,” “Barracuda,” and “What About Love,” along with a selection of her favorite songs by other artists. When she hit that cathartic, roof-shaking “YEAH!” toward the end of The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” she brought the house down.

1. Welding Tommy Pike Customs Portrait: This moment at Tommy Pike Customs shows the magic of being able to freeze time with a camera. Photography allows a dynamic process to be captured in a way that the human eye simply cannot.

2. Olivia Perreault Double Exposure Artist Portrait: When planning the GCCA Brandon Fellow profile series, I knew I wanted to create a single image for each artist that found a way to blend that artist’s work into a portrait of herself.

For Olivia Perreault, an artist who paints landscape scenes found near her home, I thought it would be perfect to blend her landscapes with a portrait of her using double exposures.

This blending of her paintings and her body creates an image that captures her strong personal connection to her work.

4 3. Delvin Choice Smoke Portrait: Delvin is a cool dude. There is no way around it. The guy just exudes charisma. I wanted to create a simple portrait but felt that one more visual element was needed to capture a bit of the drama of being a performer. Smoke was that magic element that brings more depth to a very simplified portrait.

4. Mari Steinbach Biking Portrait: Mari Steinbach never slows down. Besides being the director of Greenville’s Parks and Recreation Department, she is a seasoned triathlete. The hardest part of this shoot was keeping up with Mari. I had to ask her to slow down each time she rode past me.

Thirty attempts later, I finally slowed her down enough to capture this frame.

5 5. ‘Star Wars’ in the Classroom Photo: When you are photographing a story about “Star Wars” and the assistant director of the Roper Mountain Science Center says he can get you a guy in a Stormtrooper suit, you thank the photography gods. Needless to say, this was one of the most memorable shoots of the year.

6. Sean Brock Portrait: Sean Brock is kind of a big deal. And photographing someone who has already been photographed by GQ and the New York Times is a bit daunting, to say the least.

Instead of introducing obvious props like kitchen utensils or food, I wanted to strip away all distracting elements — even color — and just focus on Sean himself.

Sometimes less is more.

7. Victoria Wyeth Portrait: When I met Victoria Wyeth, I immediately realized that she possessed a frenetic energy that is nearly impossible to match and seemingly never ran out. Every photo I had found of her in other publications and websites seemed sedate and static compared with the fireball that stood before me. After spending 30 minutes setting up for a very static, serious image, I scrapped everything and let her be herself. All we ended up needing was one light, a white wall, and Victoria’s infectious charisma.

8. Solar Eclipse Portrait: Interns are great to have around the office. They can get you coffee, hold your light stands on windy days, and, of course, willingly look ridiculous for the sake of a great image.

I mean, the only thing better than one pair of solar eclipse glasses is four pairs, right?

9. Ken Christy Woodworker Portrait: Ken Christy has the hands of a craftsman and the mind of a philosopher. Shooting artists opens a window to their creative process. What most struck me about Ken was his lasersharp focus on this craft. I hope this image captures just a bit of that intensity.

10. Charis Jackson Barrios Portrait with illustration: My best images come when the subject plays an active and collaborative role in their creation. 11. Evan Harris as Dr. Watson Portrait: Theater lends itself well to photography. The elaborate stage designs, costumes, and special effects all help bring an imaginary world to life. Looking at this photograph, it’s hard even for me to believe we were not actually surrounded by the bitter cold of a dreary London winter in the late 1800s. Instead, we were simply standing on a stage with a painted wall as a background and two smoke machines humming as I hollered for more fog.

12. Pierce Curren Snake Portrait: Some people really like snakes. Pierce Curren and his parents take liking snakes and other reptiles to a new level. They host the internationally distributed educational TV show “Scaly Adventures.” Me, I am not much of a snake guy, but I am always willing to get as close as I need for the shot.

For the third consecutive season, the Clemson Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide will meet in the College Football Playoff. This time, they’ll play in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day under the lights of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

Unlike the previous two matchups, however, the Tigers and Crimson Tide aren’t competing for the national championship. The winner of this game will face the winner of the Rose Bowl — either the Oklahoma Sooners or the Georgia Bulldogs — in the national championship game on Jan. 8 in Atlanta.

Here are five players on the Crimson Tide who could make a difference in Monday night’s game.

5 Alabama Crimson Tide players to know before the Sugar Bowl

RAEKWON DAVIS, defensive end, sophomore At 6 feet 7 inches tall and 306 pounds, Raekwon Davis is a force on the Crimson Tide’s defensive line, a unit that is consistently loaded with top talent. After seeing playing time in seven games as a freshman, this season the sophomore leads the team in sacks (6.5) and is second in total tackles (59) and tackles for loss (7).

Due to his size alone, Davis has helped bolster the Alabama rushing defense, which ranks No. 3 in the country.

But he can also be effective in pressuring the quarterback.

In a preview of the Iron Bowl against the Auburn Tigers, Sports Illustrated’s Joan Niesen wrote of Davis, “The hulking sophomore is primarily a run-stuffing defender who plays inside, but he has the rare ability to disrupt the passing game when he’s not plugging gaps.”

RASHAAN EVANS, inside linebacker, senior

Prior to the start of the 2017 football season, Pro Football Focus’ Elliott Rooney named Rashaan Evans as a player poised to have a breakout season for the Crimson Tide. Before this year, Evans had played 482 snaps in his career — just under 20 percent of the team’s total defensive snaps. But in those limited opportunities, Evans had shown flashes of promise as an impact player.

“The big question for Evans in 2017 will be if he can put together a full season of this type of production,” Rooney wrote. That question has now been answered. In addition to leading the Crimson Tide in tackles for loss (10.5), the senior is second on the team in sacks (5) and third in total tackles (57).

COMMUNITYJOURNALS.COM In his scouting report of Evans, FanSided contributor Jon Dove said, “In the run game, Evans plays downhill and doesn’t hesitate to take on blocks. He does a great job rolling his hips into the blocker and creating a jolt. This provides him with room to attack and make the tackle. Evans also has the quickness to work around blocks in space.” His ability to defend against the pass — either as a rusher or in coverage — also makes him a valuable asset, he added.

The Alabama offense heavily relies on a strong ground game. Just like last year, the Crimson Tide have split carries from the running back position between Damien Harris and junior Bo Scarbrough. This season, Harris leads the team in rushing yards (906), touchdowns (11), and yards per carry (8.2).

CALVIN RIDLEY, wide receiver, junior

Alabama does not have a prolific passing offense, but when quarterback Jalen Hurts drops back to throw, he’s often looking for Calvin Ridley. The junior leads the team in receptions (55) and receiving yards (896) this season, and he averages an impressive 16.3 yards per reception. Ridley has been an explosive player ever since he first arrived in Tuscaloosa, setting the Crimson Tide’s single-season freshman receiving record. He currently is No. 2 in school history for career receptions and No. 3 for career receiving yards.

Although Ridley hasn’t put up the flashiest numbers this year — he has only 3 touchdowns on the season — he’s still considered a top NFL prospect at his position. A recent CBS Sports mock draft has him as the No. 15 overall selection, while USA Today has him at No. 19. In a scouting report prior to the 2017 season, NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah wrote of Ridley, “[He] is a smooth and explosive athlete. It’s hard to find players with that combination. … He has elite over-the-top speed and tracks the ball naturally. After the catch, he’s competitive to fight for extra yards. If Ridley gets some space, he’s a threat to score from anywhere on the field.”

The Crimson Tide are ranked No. 2 in the country in team passing efficiency defense, and they allow the seventh-fewest passing yards per game at 163.7. Junior defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick is the secondary’s best player and a top prospect heading into the 2018 NFL Draft. A recent mock draft from CBS Sports has him as the No. 8 overall pick, while USA Today has him as the No. 3 overall selection.

This season, the junior is tied for third on the team in tackles for loss (6) and also has 6 passes defended to go along with an interception. Positional versatility is the key to Fitzpatrick’s value in the Alabama defense, as he is capable of playing both safety and cornerback. “Fitzpatrick is a long, super-athletic Swiss Army knife in the secondary,” CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso said.

Harris has at times been overshadowed by his counterpart Scarbrough, but it’d be a mistake for Clemson fans to overlook Harris coming into this matchup. According to USA Today’s Luke Easterling, “While he may lack Scarbrough’s rare combination of size, speed, and power, Harris is a well-built runner who packs a punch between the tackles and still has the explosiveness to break away for the big run. His vision, patience, and balance make him a frustrating assignment for any would-be tackler, as his intelligence and awareness are just as dangerous as his physical skills.”

Greenville’s TJ Lazer is a band seemingly born to play on nights like New Year’s Eve. They’re a funky rock band that’s designed to get people dancing, and because of the “musical collective” approach they’ve adopted, they can grow from a stripped-down combo to a massive musical revue. Case in point: There will be times at their New Year’s show at Gottrocks where there are 15 musicians onstage, including members of the opening band, Phat Lip. “We’ve used [Phat Lip players] Troy Jones, Matt Fassas, and Sam Kruer before, and we’ve worked with [singer] Kelly Jo on a couple of gigs, too,” says TJ Lazer bassist Thomas McPartland. “It’s great for us to be able to play with a band we’re familiar with that’s also a large group where we can have guests sit in and really make it a party.” —Vincent Harris FRI

I’m alive today because of you. When we moved to Greenville, my mom, Nikki, brought me in to be spayed through Animal Care’s free large breed dog spay/neuter program. It was too expensive to afford a spay surgery where we lived before, and she didn’t want me having any more puppies. During my surgery, Animal Care’s veterinarian discovered I had a cyst the size of a grapefruit on my ovary.
