Some Greenville County residents would pay less in taxes, motorists could be dodging a few less potholes and state residents will have to register their mopeds under laws passed by legislators this year.

But lawmakers didn’t pass ethics reform — although there’s a chance something could pass when legislators return to Columbia on June 15 to take up Gov. Nikki Haley’s vetoes — or education funding reform.

Furman University political science professor Brent Nelsen said lawmakers did “just enough” to “look like they were doing something” this session.

The failure to pass ethics reform is a “major disappointment to an awful lot of people,” Nelsen said, especially in a year when the political elite are under a lot of criticism from the Trump wing of the Republican Party.

It took the legislature until the end of the five-month-long session to pass a roads bill that would yield $4 billion over 10 years to fix

the state’s crumbling roads and bridges.

The plan uses about $200 million a year from existing Department of Motor Vehicles fees and state vehicle sales taxes to pay for bonds to fund road projects. State officials say that would free up other DOT money and allow more than $4 billion for roadwork.

Gov. Nikki Haley signed the bill Wednesday, saying it was a “better option than what we will have without.”

Greenville County would get $37 million for secondary road resurfacing and have 20 bridges replaced under the plan. Interstate 85 widening, including a section running through Greenville County into Cherokee County, is included, said DOT spokesman Pete Poore.

Nelsen said that the plan was certainly not a long-term solution the state needs.

“But that would require tax reform,” he said, something unlikely in a year when all of the House and many Senators are up for re-election.”

The plan is a “small win” for the Upstate, Nelsen said, because it has “a lot of well-traveled roads.”

Military retiree tax cut

Veterans who served 20 years in uniform will get tax cuts to be phased in over five years.

By 2020, the law allows military retirees younger than age 65 a $17,500 deduction on income earned in the state. Older veterans will have up to $30,000 of their income earned in the state exempt from taxes.

Mopeds

Under a law that takes effect in July 2017, moped drivers and their passengers would have to wear reflective vests, and those under age 21 must wear helmets.

The law also requires mopeds to be registered and have a license plate, but moped operators would not be required to carry insurance. The law requires a special moped operator’s license for those who don’t have driver’s licenses.

In addition, the law prohibits mopeds on state roads with speed limits greater than 55 miles per hour. The top allowable speed of mopeds will be increased to 35 miles per hour.

Abortion

A new law signed by Gov. Nikki Haley at Hidden Treasure Christian School in Taylors Wednesday makes it illegal for women to get an abortion in South Carolina once her pregnancy reaches 20 weeks. The law includes no exceptions for rape or incest.

According to the law, doctors may perform abortions past 20 weeks only if the fetus has been diagnosed with an anomaly and will die or if the mother’s life is threatened.

Nelsen said the new law would be popular with many Upstate residents, although he expects it to be challenged in court.

Fraternities and sororities

The Tucker Hipps Act, which was passed on the last day of the legislative session, would require public colleges in South Carolina to post semiannual reports on serious student conduct code violations by fraternities and sororities.

If the bill is signed by the governor, colleges would be required to post online the last five years of violations related to alcohol, drugs, physical assault, sexual assault or hazing at least 45 days before the beginning of each fall and spring semester. The law is named for Tucker Hipps, the 19-year-old Clemson University sophomore who died after falling from a bridge during a 2014 fraternity run.

YMCA halts plans for Verdae facility SHERRY JACKSON | STAFF

A planned full-service YMCA on 10 acres at Verdae may not happen after all.

Earlier this week, Verdae staff said they were notified by YMCA officials that a recent strategic facility program analysis does not support plans to build an expanded facility at Verdae. The findings of the study and recommendation by the YMCA Growth and Planning Committee will be reviewed by the YMCA Board later this month for final decision.

“We were very surprised and disappointed,” said Rick Sumerel, president and COO of Verdae Development. “We’re the fastestgrowing project in the city and maybe even the county.” Verdae was never interviewed or asked to participate in the study, he said.

In making the decision, the YMCA was “mindful of our commitment to serve the entire community and the limited resources we have to do so,” said Scot Baddley, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greenville.

“With Verdae, we have determined that as much as we would like to have a larger presence there, the best option for our organization at this time is to continue to provide services through our existing Verdae YMCA location, rather than moving forward with the expansion previously considered.”

The YMCA of Greenville currently operates a 6,000-squarefoot facility in Legacy Square that opened in October 2012 and offers cardio and strength training equipment and group exercise classes. Plans for the new full-service facility had included a pool, childcare and outdoor activity fields.

Should YMCA leadership decide to abandon expansion plans, Verdae anticipates they will be asked to repurchase the 10-acre tract of land that the YMCA bought in 2015.

If the YMCA decides not to build, the land will revert back to Verdae to control, said Sumerel. “Hopefully it won’t come to that, but we do have safeguards historically built in at Verdae.”

Greenville County voters will go to the polls Tuesday for primaries in what one local official is calling the most important election some voters have seen in their lifetime, both locally and nationally.

“We have not seen a more important election in our lifetimes,” said Patrick Prince, second vice president for the Greenville

NAACP and a member of the Community Voter Empowerment Coalition.

Voters on Tuesday will decide the Republican or Democratic nominees in nine local and state races. In many cases, the winner of the primary will likely hold that office since no other candidates filed to run for the seat.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

For those who can’t make it to the polls on election day, in-person absentee voting is available in Conference Room H of Green-

ville County Square on Friday, June 10, and Monday, June 13, from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

In-person voting is open Saturday, June 11, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Voters should use the “Human Services Agencies” entrance.

Registered voters must present valid identification at the polling location of the precinct where they are properly registered to vote. Acceptable ID includes a valid South Carolina driver’s license, concealed weapons permit, a state identification card issued

by the DMV, federal military ID card, U.S. passport or a South Carolina Voter Registration card that has a picture. The ID must be current with a picture of the voter.

There are exceptions for voters who are properly registered and cannot get one of the above photo IDs. To vote using the exception, a person must have a voter registration card.

Greenville County Sheriff Republican Primary

Incumbent Sheriff Steve Loftis faces four former Greenville County Sheriff’s Office employees, the most competition he’s faced in his 13 years as sheriff.

No other candidates filed to run for the position, so Tuesday’s winner will likely lead the Sheriff’s Office for the next four years.

Primaries will be held in three Greenville County Council races.

The District 18 primary is a rematch of the 2012 Republican primary between incumbent Joe Baldwin and challenger Mike Barnes. In 2012, Mike Barnes defeated Baldwin but was disqualified on a documentsfiling technicality. That made Baldwin the party’s nominee although Barnes had won 56 percent of the vote. Barring a successful write-in campaign, Tuesday’s winner will represent the Greer and Blue Ridge area on Council.

Three Republicans are seeking their party’s nomination for the District 21 Council seat representing the Eastside, Greer and the Pelham Road areas. Incumbent Jim Burns did not seek re-election. Tuesday’s winner will face Libertarian Bill Michaud in November.

Four Democrats are challenging longtime District 25 representative Lottie Gibson in the Democratic primary. Gibson has represented the district since 1992. Two of the challenges are former County Council members. The two other candidates have experience with nonprofit organizations. No Republicans filed, so the winner will likely represent Southside, Welcome and the SCTAC area

County Council approves $22K grant for used oil recycling ANDREW MOORE | STAFF

Automobiles are great for transportation, but not for the environment. That’s why the Greenville County Solid Waste Division has promoted and conducted used motor oil recycling since 1993. Those efforts are about to get a financial boost.

Greenville County Council approved the division’s request for a $22,545 grant issued by the Department of Health and Environmental Control on Tuesday. The county finance committee approved the request on May 23.

The Solid Waste Division will receive the funds on July 1.

The county plans to use $5,000 of the grant for its “environmental importance of recycling used oil” program, according to county documents.

The educational program includes promotion for used motor oil recycling through digital billboards, digital billboard trucks, radio stations and news sites.

It also includes landfill tours and classroom presentations at Greenville County schools, according to recycling coordinator Wendy McNatt.

The county plans to use $13,595 for the purchase and installation of a gas and oil mixture tank at the Blackberry Valley Convenience Center. According to county

documents, the current tank was contaminated with chemicals.

The remaining funds will be used for Haz-Mat Environmental Service costs and recycling seminars and educational programs for employees.

Greenville County began collecting used motor oil and its bottles in 1993 after the S.C. Solid Waste Policy and Management Act of 1991 banned the disposal of motor oil into sewers, drainage systems, septic tanks, surface water and groundwater.

There are about 900 used motor oil collection sites in South Carolina, according to DHEC. In Greenville County, there are seven used oil-recycling sites. Some offer recycling for farm oil and oil and gasoline mixtures.

In 1995, South Carolina established its used motor oil grant program that provides local governments the funds to establish and maintain oil-recycling centers and its related programs or equipment.

Greenville County has received state funding since 1996. It had the fifth-largest amount of recycled used motor oil — 137.99 tons — last year.

McNatt said population, socioeconomic background and collection opportunities affect data. However, the county’s large amount of recycled used motor oil could provide several benefits for Greenville.

NGU calls Greer facility “game-changer” North Greenville University is working to ready the former Ryan’s Steakhouse corporate office building in Greer into the home for its graduate school and undergraduate online college.

NGU bought the 31,000-square-foot building and 10-acre property on Lancaster Avenue in March.

The building will house the school’s new physician assistant medicine master’s program, which will begin in January. The school will also move its existing graduate programs and its College of Adult Professional Studies programs into the facility, which is near Wade Hampton Boulevard and Poinsett Street.

Once the physician assistant program starts, it will join business, Christian ministry, education, health science and music education as the school’s graduate offerings.

NGU spokesman LaVerne Howell called the facility a “game-changer” for the school.

Swamp Rabbit Trail section to remain closed The section of the Swamp Rabbit Trail between Westfield Street and Reedy View Drive will remain closed until further notice.

The section was expected to open earlier this week but the contractor has encountered a tremendous amount of rock, which will have to be blasted.

City officials said the area presents a safety concern because pedestrians were going around and through the barricades and fencing.

A detour remains in effect.

A long-planned extension of the Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail south of Greenville is moving forward.

Greenville County administrator Joe Kernell told members of the Greenville City Council at a work session on Monday that the county expects to seek bids for the removal of the railroad ties and rails on a portion of the trail that would run from Cleveland Park to CU-ICAR. The proposed extension would cross Laurens Road near the intersection with Washington Street and continue parallel to Laurens.

The project includes a county-owned stretch of abandoned rail line that runs from Pleasantburg Drive to the automotive research center.

The city agreed in January 2015 to contribute $2.5 million to the project known as the Greenlink Gateway on the condition that the county constructs pedestrian bridges over Laurens Road, Verdae Boulevard and Haywood Road.

Kernell said Monday that an engineering firm is studying what it would take to put bridges at those points and to convert an existing railroad bridge over Woodruff Road to a pedestrian bridge.

“They’re studying what makes sense, whether it’s a bridge or a tunnel,” Kernell said. Kernell said the county likely would have to meet with the city if the cost exceeds the city’s $2.5 million contribution. The county expects to get the report on Haywood and Verdae bridges in late August, Kernell said.

The county has committed $1.5 million to the project already and will have another $4.3 million available once the sale of 1.2 acres of land that had been the proposed site for a failed downtown visitors center is complete. Kernell expects the deal with Bo Aughtry III to close within about 30 days.

“That’s not slowing us down,” he said.

Kernell said the county is working with an attorney to get easement and rights-of-way for the project north of Pleasantburg. The county is studying how and where to connect the extension to Cleveland Park.

Shining on Greenville veteran Doug Greenlaw keeps the spirits of worn-out flags flying CINDY LANDRUM | STAFF

Although the American flag from which it came was too tattered and torn to fly, a star that Bob Howard keeps on his desk at the Greenville Tech Foundation reminds him of all the things that are right about America — and the men and women who sacrificed to make it so.

“I think we forget how much good news there is in our country,” he said.

Howard got the star, now mounted on a cardboard card that has a short poem that even the smallest children can understand on the back, from Greenville resident and veteran Doug Greenlaw, who is chairman of the Community Journals.

Greenlaw has been saving the stars of American flags that are too worn to be flown for a year or so. After he cuts the stars out, he folds the flag, burns it and buries the ashes. That’s the proper way to dispose of a flag.

Greenlaw began making his star cards after he was given one himself at a military meeting he attended.

Howard attended a speech by Greenlaw during a military lecture series held at the Poinsett Club. Greenlaw gave each attendee a star.

Howard knew that Greenville Tech had a lot of locations where flags were flown and wondered if it had some in need of disposal.

In the past the school had found Boy Scout troops or American Legion Posts that knew proper disposal methods. This time, Greenlaw was the recipient.

“Most people don’t know how to get rid of flags,” Greenlaw said. “The American flag is literally a banner for our country. People know to treat it with respect and not throw it in a trashcan. But they don’t know how to properly dispose of it.”

The Military Order of the Purple Heart is an organization dedicated to helping veterans wounded in war, said Greenlaw, who helped found a chapter in the Upstate. That help can range from helping combat-wounded soldiers navigate the maze of government entitlements to providing rides to a Veterans Administration hospital to finding donors who can provide wheelchairs to wounded soldiers who need them.

“I think it’s your obligation if you’ve been given the right opportunity at the right time, to do it,” Greenlaw said. “I want to take the Military Order of the Purple Heart to the next level.”

Elite senior and super senior golfers had the chance to tee up last weekend at the sixth annual Chanticleer National Senior Invitational (CSNI).

The event was held June 1–3 and took place at the Greenville Country Club’s Chanticleer course with a tournament format of a 54-hole stroke play. Twenty-four states were represented in this year’s CNSI. The Chanticleer course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., is ranked as the top course in Upstate, according to the Greenville Country Club. It is also known as the longest (6,900 yards) in America, with a par 72 layout.

Final results for the invitational landed Rick Cloninger in first place after a challeng-

ing tournament. In the senior division, Cloninger of Fort Mill beat out Roy Hunter of Pawleys Island, S.C., by one stroke, winning with a 54-hole total of 217. This is Cloninger’s second title and fourth consecutive Top 3 finish.

The senior division includes players ages 55 to 64, and the super-senior division includes players 65 and older. Players over the age of 75 may compete as Grand Masters. The field is chosen from a pool of applicants based on their tournament playing record and current rankings, among others.

The Chanticleer National Senior Invitational began in 2011 to provide a conditioned and challenging course on which to present a premier invitational tournament for elite senior and super senior golfers recognized for their playing accomplishments on a national and international scale, according to Greenville Country Club. The 2016 event was awarded 1,000 points by Golfweek magazine.

ASKED ANSWERED ASKED: Some Upstate residents have noticed oversized campaign signs that are nearly 1,000 percent larger than the norm dotting the highways and sidewalks. Are they legal?

ANSWERED: Yes, depending on where you live.

Several of these mini-billboards, measuring 97 by 48 inches (compared to the traditionally accepted size of 24 by 18 inches), have been cropping up in the Thornblade area of Greer near South Batesville Road and The Parkway. But that area is an unincorporated part of Greenville County where general signage code compliance is handled by the county, but political and campaign signs fall under the auspices of the state Department of Transportation.

The state has leeway to determine if signs are a “safety hazard or impede maintenance,” according to Brandon Wilson, DOT District 3 maintenance engineer. But size does not matter. South Carolina code permits political signs up to 32 square feet – or 97 by 48

Both cities forbid political signs to be placed on public property, roadways and easements. Both also limit when signs can be placed (60 days ahead of the June 14 election) and when they must come down (within 10 days after the election).

So, for those in unincorporated parts of the county, the bad news is, yes, you’re stuck with them. And they might be around a bit longer than the others. State code says only that political signs can be in place for up to 90 days.

Putting Parkinson’s on the ropes

Art Smith pounds his boxing gloves against the punching bag, yelling with each jab and looking as ferocious as a brawler itching for a knockout.

“Come on, Art,” his cornerman shouts.

“Five, six, seven, eight – come on!”

Smith responds, giving the last punch his all, but he knows there’s no beating his true foe: Parkinson’s disease. It’s incurable. The best he can hope for is strength for another bout tomorrow.

Perseverance through boxing drills is the way Smith and about a dozen other Upstate adults with the motor system disorder are dealing with their gradual loss of mobility.

Behind the long, heavy punching bags hangs a vintage poster of Muhammad Ali. The three-time heavyweight champion boxer is a good role model for perseverance, as he endured Parkinson’s for more than 30 years before his June 3 death at age 74.

“Down the line. Call out loud,” shouts Jennifer Mathews, owner of Core Balance, a Woodruff Road fitness center, in which she opened Rock Steady Boxing Greenville a little more than a month ago.

The boxing and fitness regimen includes yelling. This helps people with Parkinson’s maintain their voice. “Soft voice is one of their symptoms, so we have them yell as they’re punching the heavy bag,” Mathews says.

Exercise and camaraderie Resting his lean frame between circuit rotations, Art Smith says he wasn’t into boxing before he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

“I boxed once with bare knuckles in a high school locker room and lost miserably,” he says, grinning.

A left-hand tremor resulted in Smith’s Parkinson’s diagnosis four years ago. He still has the tremor, but hasn’t noticed any other physical changes. Boxing several times a week is helping, he says.

“It lets you get off steam and put Parkinson’s on the bag,” Art says of his attacks against the punching bag.

Boxing also provides an emotional benefit. Sharing a rigorous physical regimen helps ward off psychological demons that accompany the disease.

“The primary purpose is camaraderie,” Smith says. “The biggest problem is when we feel apathy and depression and sit at home, doing nothing.”

Through rigorous training, the Parkinson’s disease boxers have grown close. They don’t have to apologize for fumbling the fitness ball or tarrying a little too long on the boxing circuit. Everyone gets it. Their particular weaknesses might vary, but everyone here has dealt with frustrating limitations that make these sessions — at any speed —

a challenging and aerobic workout.

“There’s not a lot available for people with Parkinson’s besides medications,” Mathews says. “A boxing workout helps with the things that Parkinson’s takes away from you: speed, agility, coordination, balance, focus, power.”

“We have to do this” Mathews assesses each person before assigning him or her to a clinic. She has divided training into a group for those who have better balance and physical skills and a slower group for people with more challenges. Mathews’ mother, Tonda Vial, 67, is in the latter group. She had been working as a teacher in Laurens County, when she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s five years ago.

“I used to exercise three or four times a week, bicycling, doing aerobics and Pilates,” Tonda says. “I did kickboxing aerobics on Thursdays.”

Balance, speed and fatigue problems sidelined her from her pre-Parkinson’s exercise regimen and forced her into retirement.

Tonda’s husband, Craig Vial, who taught science to middle schoolers in Laurens County before retiring, expected to spend time cycling and gardening. His wife’s diagnosis changed everything: “It’s such an insidious disease. Just walking is complex for Tonda.”

In searching for Parkinson’s treatments,

Craig came across stories about Rock Steady Boxing, which was founded by Scott Newman, a former Indiana prosecutor, who began boxing training 10 years ago, after his early-onset Parkinson’s diagnosis. He found that it improved his health and symptoms, so he opened the first Rock Steady Boxing program in donated gym space. The program expanded, eventually forming a training camp for other fitness trainers to learn how to expand the boxing strategies for Parkinson’s patients in their areas.

Craig decided to attend the training camp, so he could use the boxing strategies to help his wife maintain her strength and fitness.

His daughter, who already owned a fitness business, said she’d join him. “We went there just for my mom,” Mathews says.

“It wasn’t in my head to start these classes in Greenville, but once we got there we were so overwhelmed and inspired and amazed at what it was doing,” she recalls. “Over four days, we heard stories about how much the program had done for these people with Parkinson’s and how it changed their lives, so when we got back to the airport, we both were thinking, ‘We have to do this.’”

Carolina, including his daughter’s Greenville location. One is in Charleston, two are in Hilton Head and there’s a North Carolina location in Charlotte. Nationwide, there are more than 150 Rock Steady Boxing sites.

Later, in the boxing area, Craig holds a punching bag, calling out, “Good punches.

Here we go. Two. Pull ‘em back. That’s good!”

When people put on those big gloves, they’re literally fighting back the disease, Mathews says.

“It’s empowering,” she adds. “Part of what makes this work is what is called forced, intense exercise, which means we push them to work harder than they would on their own.”

Recent results from a study that compares Rock Steady Boxing to other exercise found evidence that people with Parkinson’s in the boxing program maintained greater physical ability and quality of life, according to University of Indianapolis physical therapy professor Stephanie Combs-Miller, who led the study.

The program is working for Tandy, whose gait and balance have improved since she started, Mathews says. “Her left arm had quit swinging when she walks, so we have

her take huge exaggerated steps and swing her arms.”

Having social support also has helped her mom. “In here, people are struggling with the same things she is,” Mathews says.

“It’s amazing to me how quickly the whole group felt like a family; there’s an immediate bond.”

Get some exercise with these Greenville Rec programs Now that the kids are home, here’s how to get them back out of the house So it’s the first full week of June, you’re back from that… let’s say “relaxing” family vacation, and the kids are hanging around the house all day. Every day. And it’s getting old. Fast.

What is Parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurological or motor system disorder that results from a person’s brain losing dopamine-producing brain cells. The most common symptoms are tremors or trembling in the hands, arms, legs, jaw and face; stiffness of limbs and trunk; slow movement and instability when standing; and lack of coordination and balance.

People with PD might have difficulty walking, talking and performing simple daily tasks. It usually impacts people over age 60, but some younger people can be impacted, as is actor Michael J. Fox. Also, heavyweight-boxing champion Muhammad Ali was diagnosed with the disease when he was in his early 40s.

There is no cure for Parkinson’s, but it is treated with medication, such as levodopa, to replace the lacking dopamine.

This is where the Greenville County Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism (or Greenville Rec for short) comes in. Greenville Rec offers more than 55 parks, trails and recreation facilities throughout the county, and while people might be familiar with the Swamp Rabbit Trail or Otter Creek Water Park, Greenville Rec also offers several youth sports programs, both during the summer and throughout the year.

I spoke with Greenville Rec’s Bob Mihalic about what’s available to get the kids out of the house — um, I mean, get them some exercise this summer.

Pittman Memorial Park, 420 Blacks Drive, Greenville “It’s a growing sport,” Mihalic says. “We work with [local nonprofit] Greenville Ultimate, and they’re the ones who put the leagues together and use our fields for that. The rules are almost set up like football. It’s a team sport, it can be played co-ed, and it’s becoming very popular with a lot of teens in the area.”

But we do find that we get a pretty big boost at the Pavilion in July and August. Folks love to come in and play. There are U.S. Figure Skating ‘Learn To Skate’ programs that start in June and run through the summer, so it’s one of those situations where if you want to get your young child involved in the sports, this is a chance with no pressure.”

And then we have young people who have become very good high school players and they still come to the summer tennis camps and get a higher level of training. Tim Driscoll is our pro, and he’s very good. For whatever level of skill you want it to be, there’s a program to fit you.”

Mihalic says that when Greenville Rec decides to add a youth sport, it’s in response to what the community wants.

“Almost everything done through County Rec is demand-driven,” he says. “In other words, it’s the residents of Greenville County who have asked for or implied what they’d like to see this type of sport or recreational activities. We do a lot of surveys and a lot of planning, usually years out, and it’s not like we create a sport and say, ‘Here, like this.’

“Twenty or 25 years ago, there was a demand for an ice rink, and we built one. Ultimate Frisbee is another example as well. We built an all-purpose field, and you can play soccer out there and flag football, but the community said, ‘This is starting to pick up steam,’ so we added time for Ultimate Frisbee to be played out there as well. It’s about consumer needs and wants.”

Bank of America helps fund Upstate workforce development and education

SCS students Nicholas Bain and Matthew Raunikar were recognized as National Merit Scholars. The students took the SAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test in 2014 along with 1.5 million juniors from 22,000 high schools. To advance to the finalist level, students had to meet additional standards including a record of high academic performance in college prep work, achieving SAT scores that conform to the PSAT/NMSQT performance and being fully endorsed by a high school official.

Bank of America will distribute over $115,000 in grants this month to ten area nonprofits working to increase educational and workforce development opportunities throughout the Upstate. Greenville Technical College will be receiving a grant that will fund its Center for Manufacturing Innovation to help build a curriculum and plans for capstone projects that are part of the advanced manufacturing certificate program. Other area organizations receiving grants this year include: Clemson University, Goodwill Industries of the Upstate, Greenville Symphony Association, Homes of Hope, Junior Achievement of Upstate South Carolina, Raven Magwood Foundation, Spartanburg Academic Movement, Tri-County Technical College and United Way of Greenville.

Students from St. Joseph’s Catholic School (SJCS) in Greenville painted outdoor hopscotch and Twister boards by both entrances of the Center for Developmental Services (CDS) facility. The handcrafted games will help patients build strength, balance and coordination during their sessions with physical therapists from Kidnetics. Students from SJCS have done multiple creative projects to help the CDS, including the painting of the new mural by the employee entrance at CDS last fall.

Hagood Mill hosts tribute to musician Jerry Garcia Hagood Mill is hosting a string band tribute that will highlight the music of Jerry Garcia on Saturday, June 18, starting at 10 a.m.

How to treat your windows for function and style Window treatments are an important part of any room, whether their purpose is functional or decorative. They are an opportunity to further complement the style of your space. To begin, focus on the function of the treatments, because these options are more limited. Then, consider the decorative options because they can help achieve the final design.

Panels have dominated window treatment design in the past, but recently, more detailed treatments have surfaced — perhaps not swags and jabots, but we are definitely seeing more details.

Function

Do your window treatments need to provide privacy, room darkening, temperature regulation or sun and glare control? Shutters and blinds are excellent choices when you want to tilt while not blocking out light completely. I like the 3-inch Norman shutters and the 2-inch blinds. The wider slats allow entry of more light, as well as providing a more updated look.

I also like a cellular shade in combination with

fabric panels. Cellular shades are window coverings made from pleated fabric that forms honeycomb-shaped cellular compartments.

The cellular shade is available in semi-opaque or room-darkening options. It provides another layer of insulation but can be concealed in a smaller head rail. They are also available with a top-down function to offer privacy.

For sun and glare control, solar shades are becoming more and more popular. This is a roller shade made out of perforated vinyl. It can look modern standing alone or can be softened with the help of fabric treatments.

One of my favorite treatments for privacy — without having to compromise style — is the fabric Roman shade. These shades are great for any style and are very customizable, depending on the fabric choice. Use solid, textured linen with a fabulous decorative tape to add softness and privacy, or opt for a bold geometric pattern to make a statement. The natural woven shade is available in a variety of woven materials, such as bamboo and rattan.

Gray tones and more traditional natural colors are available, as well. These treatments are

lovely when layered with stationary panels, or are just as appealing alone.

Design

Fabric drapes can add softness or texture or can be statement pieces. However, only one element should be the wow factor in a room.

Airy sheers with a tone-on-tone pattern or embroidery are perfect for creating a soft, serene bedroom. Add white panels to a farmhouse style to create a billowy, simple look. Unless I am using sheer fabric, I prefer lining and interning the panels to provide weight and drapability.

To make 8-foot ceilings appear higher, hang your rod directly below the crown molding.

The rod should be 8 to 12 inches (no more than 12) above the window casing. To allow maximum light into your home, extend the rod outside of the window molding. Panels can also draw to provide privacy. Use a blackout lining to completely block out light, which offers a hotel-like experience in your home.

Much like rugs, fabric treatments can also help with sound control.

Drapery hardware is another important element to consider. I prefer 1-inch rods with a simple finial, or a French rod that returns to the wall. A wide selection of finishes to complement any style is available. I prefer a French pleat as the header of panels.

In addition, I am seeing more valances now than I have in the past. They are perfect options in bathrooms and kitchens where panels may not be appropriate.

Don’t underestimate what window treatments can do for your room. Remember: Window treatments can be the “something’s missing” design element in any room. Carefully plan for function and style to complete your room and give the designer look that everyone will admire.

Greenville’s Mark Webb reflects on music career, prepares to release new album ANDREW MOORE | STAFF

Greenville singer-songwriter Mark Webb is a troubadour just trying to find his place in the music industry. His 11-year career has produced three albums, but none of them have felt “polished” to him. That’s why he considers his upcoming release his debut.

Webb releases his newest record— “Home” — on July 8 through Gold Ship Records.

The five-song album, which was recorded at Studio 101 in Woodruff, is the end product of years spent inside Greenville coffee houses.

It features more twang than ever before, something thought to be impossible for the Americana musician who grew up listening to Hank Williams and George Jones. The songs also feature strong lyrics with pop sensibility. And the confidence in Webb’s voice mirrors the fact that he’s not the new kid on the block.

Webb is 30 years old, but he stepped on stage for the first time when he was 19. From there, he released two acoustic albums that focused on his songwriting abilities. But everything changed in 2012 when he decided to go electric.

He recruited bassist Russ Chapman and drummer Josh Lane and headed into the studio. The trio recorded “Something More” in Atlanta. The album garnered local attention.

Webb and his crew toured around Greenville and were later invited to Fall for Greenville, which he’s played twice since then.

He’s become a local staple of sorts. Webb, equipped with his signature yellow Fender Telecaster, has played countless Greenville coffee shops, bars and restaurants through the years. And his involvement in local festivals, including Greenville’s Artisphere, has solidified his place in the music community.

But Webb could become a household name soon. He signed to Gold Ship Records in Bristol, Tenn., in January 2015. It was everything he had worked for.

“We knew that with proper artist development, Mark would be a huge success,” said Andrew Sergent, president and founder of Gold Ship Records. “What really sealed the deal for me was when I still had some of his hooks stuck in my head for days on end.”

A few months after signing, Webb entered pre-production for his label debut. But he wanted to do things differently this time around. He wanted to take his time. Webb was able to do just that with help from studio owner Brad Phillips.

“I just wanted to take my time and not feel rushed. Any recording I’ve done before has had a sense of urgency attached to it,” said Webb. “I wanted to develop these songs to their fullest potential. Brad helped that

along. He had a lot of great ideas.”

In the studio, Webb wrote three originals and reworked two songs from his catalogue.

It was his way of solidifying past efforts with his vision for the future.

“I felt like those songs never met their full potential. I just felt that they needed the high-end production to do that,” said Webb.

“They just fit great with the other songs.”

Webb and the record label decided to take the album name from the song “Come Back Home.” They chose “Queen” as the single.

Both songs encompassed what he wanted to tell listeners.

“Home is about being honest about the things that are going on in your life. Home is not just a structure or a town you live in.

When you’re behind those walls, you are yourself,” Webb said. “That’s what home really is. That truthfulness.”

What are some of your earliest music memories?

I can remember riding around with my grandparents, listening to country music on the radio. It was old country, too. But my mom loved Michael Jackson. So I just listened to a lot of different things. When I was younger, my family started attending church regularly. So there was a lot of gospel music in my house, too.

When did you know a music career was for you?

It wasn’t until my mid-to-late 20s that I tried to pursue it. I was just working parttime jobs at the time. I tried working in music stores. It was great. But it wasn’t the same. It was just a store that had instruments in it. I was only happy when I was able to play music for people.

So the new single is “Queen.” Is there a good story behind it?

I remember playing gigs and being in

smoky bars. Sometimes I’d see individuals by themselves, just sitting there. It seemed like they were longing for something. Maybe it’s something in the past or something that used to be. But I saw a lady in a bar. She was beautiful. But you could tell the years had taken something away from her. So I just created this story based around her looking for something she used to have. She wasn’t looking for a man to take her home at the end of the night; she was looking for something more.

The new album sounds more country than your past releases. Did that just happen naturally or was it on purpose?

I think it happened naturally. I would say the sound of the album is more commercial because of the production quality. I wanted something that had that radio sound that everyone listens to. As for the country sound, it does have more of that. And that’s because my friend Katlin Owen recorded some of the guitar parts and because Brad Phillips loves country music. I think being around them sort of brought that out of me a bit. I think I just wanted an album that said, “Hey, I can do country music.”

What are some shows that we can expect to see you at this year?

There are a lot of things I can’t really speak about, but there are a lot of dates that will be added over the next few weeks. But I can tell you this: I’m playing Rhythm and Roots in Bristol, Tenn. That’s in September.

She’s got a pink Mohawk, and she’s in the business of ice cream. Jessica Randall, the “pink mama” of Pink Mama’s Ice Cream, recently rolled out a few new additions to the shop in Travelers Rest.

The Main Street ice cream shop in Travelers Rest, formerly the Cool Mama’s food truck, officially opened a location in March of last year. The shop is known for handmade ice cream and waffle cones, the retired Red Cross emergency units turned ice cream response units and Randall’s pink hair, which served as inspiration for the opening of the shop and is now the business logo.

But the innovative ice cream shop has added yet another form of ice cream delivery service: a tricycle. The trike will serve as an addition to their mobile business component and deliver products throughout Main Street in Travelers Rest. Randall said it’s a good opportunity to reach those who aren’t able to come out for lunch and get to them quickly. Individuals can call or text in their orders and receive their sweet treats via trike throughout the week from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

“It’s a unique opportunity for us to expand our brand and our reach,” Randall said.

Along with the trike service, Pink Mama’s will now serve their most popular flavors

— lavender white chocolate and lavender dark chocolate — in 8-ounce cups and pints because of the high demand. Randall said their homemade lavender white chocolate and lavender dark chocolate chip ice creams have been selling out quickly. Custom orders will also be available.

The shop also recently soft-launched their new handmade sorbet line called Pink

Mama’s Chill. Randall said the sorbets have a combination of a chill and sorbet texture and flavors will change. Current flavors include lavender lemonade, mojito and pinkberry, among others.

Pink Mama’s offers more than 25 flavors of ice cream, sundaes, milkshakes, ice cream cakes and more. “We just want to have a great time, be a part of the community and have a great time doing it,” Randall said.

“It’s about making people feel appreciated.”

Podcast tells ‘Stories of the Upstate’ VINCENT HARRIS | CONTRIBUTOR

When Loyd Ford launched the “Stories of the Upstate” podcast last year, he had two goals in mind. One was to use the podcast to draw people to GreatUpstate.com, Loyd Ford his community events website. The other was to create an audio biography of Upstate residents from every walk of life.

“The whole basic concept was to have a show that was about 30 minutes focused on one person,” Ford says. “We mix serious and non-serious questions so that people don’t appear really stiff, we don’t give them questions in advance so they can show up and have prepared answers, we don’t want that.

We want the person. And that person always comes from Upstate S.C.” Ford has worked as a programmer for various radio stations around the country, including a stint at Greenville’s own WSSL 100 when it became the No. 1 station in the

area, and MY 102.5. He’d learned enough about the Upstate in his time here to know that there were plenty of interesting stories to tell.

“I really liked being connected to a community,” he says. “It was natural fit for me. I remembered what I loved about this community and how amazing it was, and I thought if there’s a place that I want to do this, this is where it is. So that’s what we did.”

And so, through 104 episodes, various Upstate residents have sat down with Loyd and talked about their lives, their triumphs and tragedies. “Half the reason we do this show is as a search for wisdom,” he says. “If you’re a subscriber, you’re going to learn things, and you’ll be stunned what they are. We’ve had someone on our program that survived an airplane crash. We’ve had a Catholic priest from Bob Jones University. We’ve had a woman who told us about how she and her entire family were put up against a wall by a Nazi firing squad and were going to be shot before someone interceded. It’s about people, family, career choices, wisdom, music and how you are handling life.”

“Music” category when a new idea was born. “Charles Hedgepath came and did an interview for Stories of the Upstate,” Ford says. “He was packing up his guitar, and he said, ‘I wish there was another way we could put a spotlight on the local music scene here.’ And I said, ‘Why don’t we do it?’ I was already doing the podcast. What was to stop us from having a jam, right? So once a month there’s a secret gathering with no audience. I hardly ever know who’s coming; Charles is the musical director of the jam, and he doesn’t tell me. It’s always a surprise.”

Precision strikes

The complex and harmonic rock of Florida’s Odessos can turn on a dime

Imagine you’re watching a flock of birds off in the distance. They’re tightly grouped, seemingly moving as one organism. Without warning, or any kind of visual cue you were able to spot, the whole flock turns as one, shifting direction entirely while staying as tight as before.

That’s what the music of Odessos is like. On their seven-song EP “Ursus Arctos Arctos,” released in 2015, the Dayton, Fla., band’s songs seem impossibly precise. The guitars, played

by Richard Simunac and singer Phil Temple, move from in-unison hard rock riffing to more intricate, gentle interplay. The rhythm section of bassist Brian Johnson and drummer Daniel Lunde are just as flexible, pounding through a crisply played, full-throttle chorus in lockstep before switching into a knotted, tricky progressive-rock-style time signature. And over the top of all that rapidly shifting musical landscape, Temple’s angular but tuneful vocals are layered in airy harmony. Think the vocals of King’s X over a more nimble, power-pop groove.

It’s heavy, to be sure, but dizzyingly melodic, and at times even bracingly anthemic.

What does it take to create a sound this tight, but not make it too tight? According to Richard Simunac, it’s all about experience, and having the right ingredients.

“When it comes to stuff like that, it’s really about the chemistry between the bandmates,” he says, “and that takes a while to get. I’ve known Brian since high school. We were actually in two pretty bad punk bands. And Phil and I have played together for years as an acoustic duo, which is where some of our songs came from when we brought them over to the full band project.

We’ve gotten to the point where we can know what we’re going to do and when we’re going to do it. It’s all of our combined experience together that makes the band what it is.”

And with a sound that’s so nicely sculpted, it makes sense that everyone in the band has to know his role. “The main thing is knowing your place in the sound,” Simunac says. “Once you know where you fit in in the sound, it’s very easy for the four of us to work out the rest of the song. One of you will say, ‘OK, I’m going to put in a lead line,’ or ‘OK, you’re playing the lead line? I’ll put some choppy chords underneath it.’”

Simunac credits the lead singer for the remarkable vocal harmonies on the EP. “Phil is a creative master with the harmonies,” he says.

“He’ll do them last-minute in the studio.”

Ultimately, what caught my attention about Odessos was how well balanced their music is between experimental and catchy.

“That’s something we think about a lot,” Simunac says. “Trying to strike a balance between complex and simple. There are a lot of bands that try really hard to sound complex.

We don’t want to do that; but we do want to have fun playing our own songs. Because of our experience with each other, we’re able to make something complex sound simple and make it sound good as well.”

Three movies for Floyd, Zep and Arlo fans This week, let’s discuss films with a musical theme — two by well-known directors and one by two guys who seem to have no idea how to make a movie.

“PINK FLOYD – THE WALL” Directed by Alan Parker | 1982 Alan Parker has made a few films with a musical theme, such as “The Commitments,” “Evita” and “Fame.”

While those three featured a lot of performances, they were stories told in a fairly traditional fashion. “The Wall” is not. It was based on the concept album “The Wall” performed by the band Pink Floyd. Roger Waters, one of the founding members of the band, wrote the screenplay. The semiautobiographical story is a musical told through a mixture of live action and animation that mirrors the story told on the album. As such, it could arguably be considered the most ambitious music video ever made.

“LED ZEPPELIN: THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME” Directed by Peter Clifton and Joe Massot | 1976

“ALICE’S RESTAURANT” Directed by Arthur Penn | 1969

This is a must-see for Led Zeppelin fans, but if you’re not a fan, don’t bother. It’s largely a concert film, but there are liveaction vignettes scattered throughout showing the band members acting out various fantasies. From a filmmaking standpoint, they are just terrible and look like something a middle school student would have made with his Super 8 camera back in the ‘70s. In one vignette, drummer John Bonham is a gangster who shoots a bunch of other gangsters. The scene contains some of the worst special effects I’ve ever seen. Another one shows singer Robert Plant as a knight, and it appears he had very little experience riding a horse prior to filming the scene.

This film is based on the 18-minute long song “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” which appeared on Arlo Guthrie’s debut album.

Arlo is the son of folk music legend Woody Guthrie, who died of Huntington’s disease in 1967, the same year Arlo’s album was released. It’s often played on Thanksgiving on the radio, and if you’ve listened to it, you know the plot of the film. It stars Arlo as a wayward musician who goes to visit his friend Alice on Thanksgiving. He ends up in jail and then in the Army and ultimately makes a point about America’s mixed-up priorities.

Fortunately, the live performances are so great it’s easy to overlook the rest. The section where Jimmy Page plays his guitar with a cello bow makes it worth sitting through the cheesy flashbacks.

The director, Arthur Penn, is also known for such classics as “Bonnie and Clyde,” “The Miracle Worker” and “Little Big Man.” Eric Rogers has been teaching filmmaking at The Greenville Fine Arts Center since 1994.

“SHILOH”

by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor This was one of my favorite books in elementary school.

An 11-year-old boy named Marty finds a stray beagle and discovers it belongs to a neighbor who regularly abuses his hunting dogs. Marty’s parents make him return the dog, which he names Shiloh. But Shiloh comes back to Marty, and he decides to steal and hide Shiloh to protect him. I’ve always loved dogs, so even at that age, I could relate to the empathy and compassion that Marty felt toward Shiloh.

“THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN”

by Garth Stein This book taught me to not always trust my instincts and to further value the opinions of friends. When I first looked at the subject of this novel, which features a race car driver as the central character and his dog as the “voice” behind their story, I immediately thought that despite rave reviews from some female friends, I’d suggest it for my husband to read. Why would I be interested in what appeared to be a male-oriented novel? But, boy was I wrong.

The book is funny, heartwarming, interesting (yes, even the bits about racing!) and filled with family, loyalty and hope. I laughed, cried and was engaged throughout.

“THE TRUTH ABOUT DOGS”

by Stephen King When I was a teenager, I read this book. It was a dark and twisted story, but as always, Stephen King is a master at creating endearing characters and setting the stage — no matter how gruesome. The master of horror has said this is the scariest book he has ever written.

The book follows the Creed family who moves into a beautiful old house in rural Maine and discovers the secret in the nearby woods. When something happens to the family cat and then to a member of the family, life after death and what happens next is explored.

There were the dangerous ones that antagonized him and the park visitors (real talk: “To be charged by a grizzly bear can be disquieting or terrifying, but it is always memorable”) and the loyal ones that served as his companions in the backcountry, including a mule nicknamed “Irwin the Magnificent.” Throw in some world-class ranger stories of rescues, guns, Rainier Ale and presidential encounters, and you’ve got a memoir that I’d be happy to recommend even if it weren’t written by my uncle.

“THE POKY LITTLE PUPPY”

Main St., Greenville Thursday, June 16, 8 p.m., $10 Cellist Sarah Clanton, a former Upstate resident, has spent most of the last two years either playing in Nashville or on the road touring behind her self-titled EP. And in that time, she’s gone from someone who used to be terrified to be onstage to a confident performer, both vocally and instrumentally. “I’ve grown a lot in the last year,” she says. “I had a lack of confidence when I first started performing. I was petrified. I failed auditions because I was just so nervous.

And the only way I could get over it was to just keep doing it. I’m still learning from the incredible performers I see here all the time.” Despite what she’s learned in Music City, Clanton says she’s happy to be coming home for this show. “I run into my music family in Greenville and see them getting more tightly knit, and everybody’s just so supportive,” she says. “They welcome me back every time I’ve been gone, and it feels good that people still want to come see me play.”

Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville Friday, June 10, 9 p.m., Free When singer/songwriter/guitarist Dylan Dickerson started performing the songs that would eventually form the catalog of Columbia’s Dear Blanca, he was doing so all by himself. “It started out as a one-man band, with me playing bass drum and hi-hat and guitar,” Dickerson says. Even though Dickerson was writing for a full band, circumstances forced him to play solo until he was finally able to recruit drummer and childhood friend Marc Coty. “Mark and I have known each other since we were 8 years old, so I got him on drums because it was natural,” he says. “We played as a two-piece for a long time, and then added [bassist] Cam Powell to the band.” The band plays a wiry, tight brand of guitar-heavy indie rock accented by Dickerson’s throat-shredding, emotional vocals. Given the intensity of his singing, it might be natural to assume that the lyrics are personal, but that’s not always the case. “A lot of it is characterbased,” he says. “Some of it is from my life experiences, but not as much as you might think.”

GREGORY HODGES Smiley’s Acoustic Café, 111 Augusta St., Greenville Friday, June 10, 10 p.m., Free Gregory Hodges plays a blazing blues guitar, but he’s far from a straightforward blues player.

He works funk and soul into his playing as well. It’s a gritty, down-home style that also has a bit of Southern rock thrown in, and when Hodges talks about his time in New Orleans, it becomes obvious where the Greenville native’s influences lie. Hodges spent six years in New Orleans, and he says his musical education came from the entire city. “The musicians in New Orleans have a lot of pride in what they’re playing,” Hodges says. “Some of them could maybe only play one or two chords, but they were going to play the heck out of those one or two chords.

It affected my playing a ton.

The sound, the groove, even the way people talk down there. You soak all that up.

I’ve incorporated stuff into my playing from guys I saw playing on the street.”

History comes alive at Chautauqua Festival Go back in time and meet four historical figures LETY GOOD | STAFF

With this year’s Greenville Chautauqua Festival theme, American Adventures, Greenvillians will get to hear the great stories of Mark Twain, Amelia Earhart, Matthew Henson and Wernher von Braun, from four nationally acclaimed historical interpreters. Festivalgoers will hear about Earhart’s adventure into the sky, Twain’s traveling chronicles, Henson’s journey as an AfricanAmerican who co-discovered the North Pole and von Braun, a German immigrant who is known as the father of rocket science.

Leslie Goddard, an award-winning actress and scholar who has portrayed famous women in history for over a decade, will visit Greenville as Earhart. As Mark Twain, George Frein, founder and artistic director of Greenville Chautauqua, will embody Twain’s character for the fifth time in Greenville. Professional actor, historical interpreter, playwright and director Keith Henley will tell the story of Henson. And Larry Bounds, who has performed in Chautauqua productions since 2002 as characters such as Harry Houdini and Winston Churchill, will transform into Werner von Braun.

The 10-day, two-weekend festival features live history through interactive theater and discussion, as well as other entertainment for all generations. The festival also expands into Asheville, Fountain Inn, Travelers Rest and Spartanburg.

Each interpreter will transform into a historical character and begin telling his or her story. After, the audience will have the chance to ask the character questions as the interpreter answers as the historic figure.

Life Is So Daily with Steve Wong

Hawaii is great, but Myrtle Beach is where the heart is I was born and reared in the Carolinas, and I proudly admit it: I like Myrtle Beach. I might like it even better than Hawaii.

Depending on who conducts the survey and what they are trying to prove, Myrtle Beach, S.C., is either one of the world’s best or worst vacation spots. I’ve seen surveys supporting both notions, and, of course, I choose to believe the surveys that say Myrtle Beach is one of the best places to get away from it all.

Granted, Myrtle Beach pretty much has it all, from the tackiest (and usually slightly obscene) Gay Dolphin souvenirs made in China to world-class golf courses that I’ve never stepped foot on.

Actually, Myrtle Beach is NOT the place to get away from it all because it’s all there in excess.

If anything, it is the place to go for an endless assortment of guilty pleasures and to get into all sorts of age-inappropriate trouble.

Native Carolinians of any age fondly remember – if barely – wearing tank tops and cut-offs under their high school graduation gowns, ready to hit the road to the Grand Strand as soon as their diplomas were passed on to their proud but worried parents. The parents were worried because they remembered firsthand doing the exact thing some 20 years earlier, and they knew some things best left unsaid at Sunday-after-church dinners at Momma’s.

And Momma could probably tell a few blushing Myrtle Beach stories of her own.

I’ve been going to Myrtle Beach my entire life, and a summer without a visit leaves a longing in my Southern psyche, no matter where else I might go.

For true believers, it’s an annual pilgrimage to the unholy waters of Sin City of the South.

Back in my day, wet T-shirt contests were hotter than the sidewalks of Ocean Drive on the Fourth of July. In more recent years, I’ve seen signs (and only signs, thank goodness) for wet boxer shorts contests. I guess equal rights to publicly display your privates behind thin, drenched and clingy cotton fabric have made a civil liberties stronghold on the Grand Strand.

And even when playboys turn into family men, they still find a reason to make the trip, trading wet T-shirt contests for changing wet diapers at the kiddie pools. Be it in a cheap motel downtown, a trailer in Garden City, a beach house in Cherry Grove or a condo anywhere between Calabash, N.C., and Georgetown, S.C., the Grand Strand calls to red-blooded Carolinians, like a coon dog attracts ticks.

At the urging of rebel vacationers, my family

recently flew from the far corners of the globe to Hawaii’s Big Island for a long-overdue gathering of the clan. One came from New York City; one from Portland, Ore.; one from Cambodia; and the wife and I from Sparkle City, S.C. After much ado, we made our way to the nearest Hawaiian beach. We had all read brochures and seen photographs of what to expect, but seeing clear blue waves roll up on shores of jaggy black lava rocks was still a bit of a shock to our Deep South mindsets.

“It certainly isn’t Myrtle Beach,” said my son, who despite being a West Coast transplant, yearns for Myrtle Beach Days.

No, it wasn’t. There were no hordes of sunburned and overweight people lying on gritty dirty sand. There were no smells of coconut-scented tanning oil mixed with iodine and Budweiser. The water wasn’t a greenish gray. And it wasn’t hotter than a boiled peanut right out of the brine of a roadside stand’s open-flame kettle.

No highways of cheap shops, outlet stores, three-story water slides, or all-day all-you-caneat seafood buffets. Just miles of secluded beaches of picture-perfect white, green or black sand dotted with palm trees and refreshed by ocean breezes.

Standing ankle-deep in the Pacific tidewater, I closed my eyes waiting for beach music to fill my soul, but alas, I could not hear “Smoke from a Distant Fire” or feel the urge to shag.

Instead, I heard the pounding rhythm of native drums and was mesmerized by the rapid-fire hip shaking of hula girls in grass skirts. Not bad, but not Myrtle Beach.

For a week, the family and I enjoyed all that Hawaii had to offer. We saw volcanoes, walked through rainforests, ate raw fish and bought authentic island-made souvenirs. It was relaxing, refreshing and certainly different. But unlike a week at Myrtle Beach, when it came to go home, I was ready to leave. It had been fun, but it wasn’t my Myrtle Beach.

All things considered, when it comes to Hawaii, I can take it or leave it, but if I don’t get Myrtle Beach sand in my shoes this summer – well, some things are just unacceptable to Carolina boys, like eating grits with a spoon or drinking unsweetened iced tea. It just can’t be.

LEGAL NOTICE The public will have opportunity to comment on Greenville County’s grant application for the 2016 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program from the US Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance beginning on June 10, 2016 through July 11, 2016 at 12 noon at the Greenville County Office of Management and Budget, 301 University Ridge, Suite 200, Greenville, South Carolina 29601. The purpose for the comment period is to receive comments from the public concerning the Greenville County JAG grant application for FY2016 in the amount of $167,254. Said grant application would fund the Department of Public Safety, Forensics Division at $43,751 for training and computer upgrades; the Department of Public Safety, Records Division at $24,000 for equipment and for temporary staff to work on special projects; the Circuit Solicitor’s Office at $55,751 for contractual services to continue the Adult and Juvenile Drug Courts; and the Sheriff’s Office for $43,752 for equipment.
