Change the name of Wade Hampton High School

I graduated from Wade Hampton High School in 1965. I knew, vaguely, that Wade Hampton III was a Confederate general — our colors were gray and red, after all, and our football team was the Generals. As a high school student, I did find it a bit unsettling that the school was named for a Civil War hero, but I can’t recall anyone ever talking about it.

Our school’s name was just part of our culture.

In the early 1960s, I was aware that things were changing in the South. Along with the nation, I saw the images on TV of Little Rock, Ark., and Birmingham, Ala. Greenville still had not fully integrated its schools and wouldn’t do so until under court order in 1970.

No one I knew — not my parents, teachers, or friends — discussed these things. When I drove our maid Edith home to her substandard house in the “colored” part of town, I wished she could sit in the front seat, but we both knew the rules.

At 18, I left Greenville, eventually living in Minneapolis for 40 years. Over time, Greenville transformed. Last summer, I moved back.

One of the main reasons I was eager to return was that now blacks were integrated into the fabric of life here in a way I couldn’t have imagined when I was growing up.

It thrilled and amazed me to see blacks and whites eating in the same restaurants and socializing together in Cleveland Park, which had been strictly segregated when I left. In 1964, rather than integrate the park’s public swimming pool, Greenville had converted it into a “sea-quarium” housing six sea lions. Now it’s a tennis court where both blacks

and whites play.

I hadn’t given my old high school a moment’s thought until I read about an online petition started by WHHS student Asha Marie calling on the Greenville County School Board “to leave the school’s racist and unpatriotic name behind us.” Marie, who is biracial, is quoted as saying she’s received and witnessed racial discrimination at WHHS and that paying homage to a racist legacy suggests that racism and discrimination are not only tolerated, but acceptable.

Two facts about Wade Hampton III are indisputable: He was one of the largest slaveholders in the Southeast, and he served as a Confederate cavalry leader.

To the signers of Asha Marie’s petition, as well as others, WHHS represents a painful legacy of slavery, repression, Jim Crow, and white supremacy. They’re asking that people face the truth: The name Wade Hampton can’t be separated from its pro-Confederacy, pro-slavery roots.

Rod Andrew, a Clemson professor who has written a biography of Hampton, says, “You can’t deny Wade Hampton was a racist, but he would be considered a moderate on race for his day. He believed whites should lead, but he also believed that blacks deserved basic protections and rights.”

Knowing this more nuanced information increases our understanding of the man and the times, but it doesn’t change what his name stands for.

Wade Hampton High School opened in 1960. It was named during the era when the South was engaged in massive resistance to Brown v. Board of Education. The next year, the Confederate flag was hoisted over the South Carolina State House to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the War Between the States. The flag was a symbol of white supremacy in 1861 and in 1961.

But that was then and this is now.

Following the 2015 massacre at Charleston’s Mother Emanuel AME Church by Dylann Roof, who was photographed with a Confederate flag and who paid homage to white supremacy, South Carolina took the flag down from the State House. I think most South Carolinians, whites as well as blacks, were glad to be rid of it. They’ve grasped the affront to African-Americans that goes along with lauding the Confederacy.

African-American students have a very different heritage from the white students at WHHS. The reverberation of the name Wade Hampton when Asha Marie enters the school every day is different from the one that is there, unconsciously, or even consciously, for white students. It’s a not-so-subtle reminder that Marie lives in a white world where the history of her race doesn’t matter and that up until now those in charge have been content to keep it that way.

I understand that the opponents fear that something will be taken away from them if the name is changed. They love their school and have a legitimate position. But I ask them to put themselves in the shoes of African-American students who attend a school whose name honors a heritage built on violence, terror, and the ownership of their ancestors.

Greenville City Council District 4 Republican Primary candidates David Sudduth and Wil Brasington agree on many of the biggest issues facing the city: the need for more affordable housing, the necessity of having smart growth, and the need for improving our city’s green space.

But they differ in how to accomplish that. Sudduth: More affordable housing for professionals such as police officers, firefighters, and schoolteachers. Any plan will depend on the city’s ability to yield strong results from the investment of $2 million from its surplus. He said the city needs to “bank” land at a greater pace.

Sudduth: Supports taller buildings in the city’s central business district because it will reduce sprawl and make projects more attractive due to the high cost of land in the city. He also supports implementation of impact fees on developers.

Sudduth: Greenville needs to continue to create and maintain public space to enhance quality of life, including neighborhood parks. Greenville’s focus on walkability, human scale, and green space are major factors that set the city apart from other cities.

Brasington: City should establish a recurring funding source for affordable housing. It should also leverage land it owns. One such opportunity is the planned City Park.

Brasington: Doesn’t support an increase in the allowed height of new construction.

Brasington: The city should fully fund and implement the plans for development of City Park. He said it would provide significant new open space for city residents as well as relieve pressure on Cleveland and Falls parks.

A slowdown in student enrollment growth has caused Greenville County Schools to delay building a new middle school and several elementary and middle school additions.

But the conversion of Rudolph Gordon Elementary to a K-8 school is still planned for 2018, and a new Fountain Inn High School and addition to Summit Drive Elementary are still expected to open in 202122, according to the school district’s updated long-range facilities plan.

The board approved a 4.6 mill debt service tax increase to pay for the plan. It will also use $10.5 million from the district’s general fund balance.

The board has updated its long-range facilities plan each year since completion of its $1 billion school construction program in 2010. The revised plan considered updat-

ed birth rates, planned subdivisions, school program changes, and the economy, said Betty Farley, the district’s director of planning and demographics.

The plan calls for $130 million for renovations and another nearly $123.6 million for new schools through 2030. The district has budgeted $315 million for capital equipment and technology updates as well.

Fountain Inn High will accommodate 1,000 students, but the school’s core will be built for 2,000 students to allow for future expansion, Farley said. The school’s attendance lines will be determined in 2020.

It is designed to relieve overcrowding at Mauldin and Hillcrest high schools. It may also provide enrollment relief to J.L. Mann Academy and Riverside High, Farley said.

Rudolph Gordon’s student assignment area will be determined this year. The 250seat elementary addition and a 500-seat middle school expansion are designed to provide relief at Rudolph Gordon Elemen-

tary, Bryson Middle, Hillcrest Middle, and Riverside Middle.

A 250-student addition at Summit Drive Elementary is needed to address overcrowding at Summit Drive and other schools near downtown Greenville.

In addition, Roper Mountain Science Center’s Harrison Hall of Natural Science and the environmental science building will get renovations, while Greer High will get a multipurpose activity and physical education room.

All high schools will get new weight rooms. Construction of those will start in 2020 and take about 10 years to get all 14 projects done. Superintendent Burke Royster said new weight rooms will be used by athletic teams and physical education programs and are necessary for the district to be competitive with neighboring districts.

The long-range facilities plan also calls for construction of a $10.5 million career technology innovation and incubation center. The center would be centrally located within the district and would serve as a proving ground to new technology programs that later could be expanded to the district’s four career centers or to each high school.

An addition to Robert E. Cashion Elementary and construction of a new elementary school at the old J.L. Mann academy site are still in the plan, opening in 2022 and 2025, respectively.

But the slowing of enrollment growth has prompted the district to delay several future projects – Ellen Woodside Elementary from 2023 to 2029, a Fork Shoals Elementary addition from 2023 to 2026, a Mountain View Elementary addition from 2025 to 2030, a Ralph Chandler Middle addition from 2030 to 2032, a Simpsonville @ Morton Elementary addition from 2025 to 2029, and a new north area middle school from 2028 to 2033.

The district will pay off the bonds from its billion-dollar construction project in 2029, and the plan calls for a study of Alexander Elementary, Welcome Elementary, Bryson Middle, Hughes Middle, and Northwest Middle for possible significant renovation and upgrading or replacement.

The district would also look at the possible conversion of Fountain Inn Elementary to a K-8 school, and a review of the district’s four career centers.

NEWS Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress, S.C. Electric & Gas, and the S.C. Office of Regulatory Staff ’s Energy Office. St. Anthony’s grant was one of the final two PaCE grants awarded. It was the only school in the Upstate to get one of the final 24 grants.

While the solar setup will save the school money, its main purpose is education, with students being able to monitor the panels online. A new curriculum serving all grade levels will be developed using up-to-date library books, texts, and renewable energy websites.

The school also has a recycling program through an agreement with Greenville County Waste Management. Last year, students participated in an anti-litter program funded through a Palmetto Pride grant. —Cindy Landrum

St. Anthony to save money thanks to solar power St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School has completed the installation of 82 solar panels that will provide the school with up to 27,100 kilowatts of electricity per year, or about 10 percent of the building’s usage. St. Anthony’s will save about $2,700 per year and avoid the production of more than 19 tons of carbon dioxide.

The system was paid for through a $34,000 grant from the Palmetto Alliance for Clean Energy and a $20,500 rebate from Duke Energy-Carolinas. PaCE is a collaboration of Duke Energy-

The winning names will be announced on June 21, along with the amount of money raised through the voting process.

The proceeds of the online auction, which is open now and ends June 19, will go to a conservation program called “Selfies in the Forest” by the Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas, a Brazilian organization that conducts research on ocelots.

“It’s not an overstatement to say that the future of many species lies in all of our hands, so we hope that seeing and learning about these baby animals will inspire everyone in our community to support conservation efforts here and across the world,” said zoo administrator Jeff Bullock.

Knox White reacts to Greenville being named 4th fastestgrowing US city From 2010 to 2016, Greenville’s population jumped nearly 10,000 people, making it the fourth fastest-growing city in the nation, according to a new Census Report. Behind the formerly named Pleasantburg are three Texas suburbs of Conroe, Frisco, and McKinney, two of which are Dallas suburbs, while the other’s a Houston-area town.

But while it’s great to be ranked the fourth fastest, is that a good thing, a bad thing, or a sign that we’ve done an awful lot right, but we can’t rest on our laurels as even more development comes to Greenville?

If you ask Mayor Knox White, the latter seems to be the answer.

“As the city becomes more desirable — great downtown and neighborhoods — we are getting a greater share of that growth.

The mayor adds, “We can’t just put our head in the sand. That’s why we are moving to capture more green space and build a new park on the west side. And why we are looking for smart traffic diverters such as a new connector to Woodruff Road.”

White, of course, is speaking about the in-development City Park on Greenville’s west side and the parallel road that will be built, in part, to divert traffic off of the horribly congested Woodruff Road, which transformed from a large swath of undeveloped land into one of the city’s busiest retail strips in 15 years.

Still, the mayor is quick to point out that not all growth is good growth. Case in point, the proposed 55 Camperdown project on the Reedy River and a controversial — and abandoned — Chick-fil-A on Augusta Street.

“I think keeping the conversation focused on balanced growth is the best way for Greenville to chart a different path from other fast-growing cities,” White says.

Two other projects in the downtown area are also set to be redeveloped. The county offices at County Square are going to be bulldozed and replaced with a mixed-use development, complete with a new county HQ. And the so-called East Gateway District, the home of the proposed Grand Bohemian hotel, is set to re-conceptualize the northern side of the Reedy River, bringing with it new retail, office, and green space.

While downtown is the hub of most new development, other areas are experiencing a boom, from the outer edges of the West End to the Village of West Greenville. However, the mayor and others believe the next big wave of development will crest along Laurens Road.

As previously reported in the Greenville Journal, a host of new projects are on the table, from the extension of the Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail to at least two mixed-used developments, a theatre, and a grocery store. Spinx Plaza at the intersection of Laurens Road and Washington Street may also get a makeover.

And the big changes don’t stop there. There has even been chatter about the possibility of tearing down the Church Street Bridge. —Chris Haire

GPD welcomes bomb detection dog to force Greenville Police Department’s new officer has four legs, pointy ears, and a wagging tail.

Leo, a black Belgian Malinois, is a dual-purpose K-9 trained for regular patrol as well as detecting explosives. The crime-fighting canine was named Leo in honor of the Greenville Lions Club, according to Lt. Allen Johnson, who oversees the police department’s K-9 Services Unit.

The Lions Club donated $20,000 to the department last year for the purchase and training of an explosive detection dog. A young, untrained dog costs around $7,500 and training for a handler is another $6,000, according to a press release. The donation from the Lions Club will also pay for seven years of dog food.

“The dogs are vital to the department’s field operations, and this new dog is going to benefit both our officers and community,” said Johnson. “We’ve needed a bomb detection dog for a while now.”

The department’s K-9 Services Unit consist of five teams. The dogs — Rocky, Valor, Ghost, Sarge, and Saber — can detect narcotics, search buildings, track suspects, and provide aggression control. —Andrew Moore

Trolls record punk rock debut EP at bluegrass studio The Greenville punk band known as The Trolls have an interestingly inverted sound.

Rather than having Mickey Kriese’s guitar carry the melodic weight, bassist David Walker’s flexible playing forms the spine of many of their songs, allowing the guitarist to create a blurred barrage of riffs while drummer Cinco Sanders rages underneath. That’s all before vocalist Caleb Riley plants his snotty, Jello-Biafra-style sneer up top to make their sound an aggressively ragged punk salvo.

It’s a raw feel that the band is attempting to maintain while recording their debut EP, and they’ll be doing much of that work themselves, with some occasional time at Bonfire Recording Studios in Piedmont.

“They mainly do bluegrass, but it worked out that so we were able to get some hours over there,” Kriese says. “But for the most part it’s going to be DIY, because between Cinco and myself and David, we’ve done a lot of recording over the years. We have the equipment and the capability and the friends willing to help us out.”

Obviously, there’s a huge financial advantage for an independent band to record themselves, but Kriese says there are other benefits, as well.

“You don’t have to worry about being on the clock,” he says. “You don’t have to sit down and think, ‘OK, we’ve only got five hours, what can we get done?’ If we do it by ourselves, it’s a lot easier to dig in and take the time and make sure it’s exactly what we want.”

And what they want for their as-yet-untitled EP, which will be released in late summer, is to work quickly when it comes to songwriting. “A lot of it was written on the fly, and that was really exciting for me and Caleb,” Kriese says. “We’ve both been part of projects before where you spend so much time on parts here and there that you forget about the whole song. So when we started this band, we decided we just wanted to have fun and trust our instincts.” —Vincent Harris

What's Worth Saving?

Greenville’s struggle to preserve its past is a question about what it values

As Greenville has become one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities, it is working to preserve buildings of its past.

While the city grew in population nearly 6 percent last year, eclipsed only by three Texas cities, Greenville is starting work on a historic resources survey to identify significant properties throughout the city, especially in the West End, Village of West Greenville, the Sullivan community, Cleveland Park, Nicholtown, North Main, Augusta Road, Sherwood Forest, and Parkins Mill areas.

“A community’s historic structures speak volumes about what that community values,” said Furman University history professor Courtney Tollison. “Although most of us are not conscious of this as we walk or drive through towns and cities, community leaders at some point in time, whether the distant past or present, made or make decisions about how best to utilize that land. Whether a plot of land in any downtown hosts a park, a sleek new high-rise, or a historic structure reflects that community’s values.”

According to the latest Census Bureau estimates, Greenville’s July 2016 population was 67,453, or a 5.8 percent increase over what it was in 2015. Only Conroe, Frisco, and McKinney, Texas, showed larger gains among cities with 50,000 or more people. Greenville’s growth comes as no surprise to those who see a downtown landscape dotted with construction cranes, new apartments and hotels, and an increasing number of tourists.

“There’s so much development going on that we don’t want to lose these things without knowing what’s there,” said Ginny Stroud, the city’s community development administrator.

“There are properties out there that the general public may not realize are significant but are certainly part of Greenville’s character and what makes us unique.”

“No one visits a community and wants to see the new Walmart or McDonald’s, but in contrast, historic structures have a strong historic pull,” Tollison said. “In an age of increasing homogenization of the American landscape, communities distinguish themselves in part by the historic architecture they chose to preserve.”

The survey does not automatically place a property on a national or local historic register, but it can be a first step. Getting historic designation for any property requires a separate process. Properties that are listed in the National Register are eligible for preservation tax credits and grants. Properties in local historic preservation districts must get permission before they can be demolished or altered.

Greenville historian Judy Bainbridge said the city has done “reasonably well” when it comes to preserving historic build-

ings. But while the city has played a role in the preservation of some of Greenville’s oldest buildings and residences, much of the credit should be given to Greenville’s citizens and companies that have pushed for their reuse.

The most recent example is the Wilkins House, a stately home on Augusta Street that was slated for the wrecking ball before the Greenville community raised $300,000 to help Neil Wilson, owner of RealtyLink who bought the Wilkins House with the goal to preserve and restore it, move it two blocks to Mills Avenue. A two-and-a-half-year restoration was completed and the property now has a preservation easement preventing it from being moved or torn down.

But not all historic buildings in the city have had as happy an ending, Bainbridge said.

One of the biggest losses was the old City Hall, a red brick Romanesque revival structure built in 1892 and torn down in

1973. The building at the corner of Main and Broad streets was originally a post office. The city traded some land on West Washington Street for it when it was time to build a new post office. The building was added onto, but the city outgrew it.

The building had its problems, too, namely a sieve-like tile roof. The city had a plan to save the original portion of the building, but City Council decided to tear it down and put a parking garage topped by an international plaza with a steel water sculpture, which is now at the Fine Arts Center, in its place.

“That was most unfortunate,” Bainbridge said.

Many of Greenville’s oldest structures were saved because new uses were found for them. Bainbridge points to the Working Benevolent Temple, built in 1922 as offices for black professionals that was turned into the headquarters of the advertising firm Ervin Penland, now EP+Co., and the C. Granville Wyche house that today is the home of the Chandler School.

“Every community makes choices about preserving and repurposing or destroying,” Tollison said. “Do they want to promote business with that sleek new high-rise? Do they want to preserve the historical fabric of the community and build upon it by repurposing historic structures? Giving new life to historic structures opens another chapter in the life of that community.”

Tollison said after the Civil War, the infrastructure of many Southern cities was devastated. Cities whose economic bases rested in agriculture and slavery didn’t have the money to rebuild and restore so they didn’t. “The buildings sat there for decades,” she said. Charleston is a good example. In the 1920s, a movement started when Susan Pringle Frost began to restore many of that city’s homes south of Broad Street.

“Their struggle 150 years ago begets rewards today,” Tollison said. “Charleston’s heritage tourism industry is thriving, based significantly on the fact that it has the largest historic residential district in the nation.”

In contrast, Greenville’s economic base before the Civil

War was more diversified, Tollison said, allowing the city to recover more quickly because of textiles and manufacturing.

“Greenville was considered a ‘New South’ city, like Greensboro and Birmingham,” she said. The term was coined by Atlanta Constitution managing editor Henry Grady to describe Southern communities that looked forward, not back, and embraced Northern investment and industrial development.

“These places had money to build and rebuild, and often did,” Tollison said. “The historic preservation movement in this country didn’t really start for another 100 years… and new buildings sent a message of vitality and forward movement in sharp contrast to those structures which represented loss and defeat.”

The city’s new historic survey will focus on properties built before 1975.

Bainbridge said building started drying up in Greenville around 1933 until after World War II. But she said she hopes the city will find at least three potential historic districts through the new survey.

“There are places in the city that absolutely, positively should be designated and need protection,” she said.

Bainbridge said Haynie Street, the area where Jesse Jackson grew up; West and East Prentiss, West Avondale, the East Hillcrest, North Main and Buist Avenue areas; and the Jenkins Street area around old Sterling are all spots that could qualify. And individual residences, such as the Judson cottage on Cleveland Street near Belmont, deserve historic designation, she said.

She said, “There are potential historic properties spotted all around this community.”

The temple, which housed doctors, lawyers, dentists, a newspaper, insurance firms, and the first black mortuary in Greenville, now houses EP+Co. The temple was also one of the centers of Greenville’s civil rights activities during the 1960s.

COVER AMERICAN CIGAR FACTORY BUILDING The American Cigar Factory at 25 E. Court St. was built in 1902. It was one of five factories the company had in the South and employed 150 girls and young women when it began production. The building represents the business and factory diversity that Greenville attracted at the turn of the century. Stone Manufacturing also used it at one time.

MILLS MILL Otis Prentiss Mills, a former Confederate officer, built Mills Mill, located at 400 Mills Ave., in 1896. It had 5,000 spindles and about 200 employees when it opened a year later.

During World War II, the mill operated three shifts, seven days a week, to produce herringbone fabric for Marine uniforms. The mill was converted to loft-style condos in 2004.

WYCHE HOUSE The Wyche House at 2900 Augusta St. was built in 1931 as a country estate for Greenville attorney C. Granville Wyche. It was one of the most expensive and elaborate residences built in Greenville in the 1930s. The property, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is now The Chandler School.

Not saved OLD CITY HALL Built in 1892 to be Greenville’s U.S. Post Office, old City Hall was a red-brick Romanesque building with battlemented towers, deeply set windows, and terra costa ornaments. The building, at South Main and Broad streets, became Greenville City Hall after the new federal building and post office was built on East Washington Street. It was demolished in 1973.

HOVEY AND CLYDE DRY GOOD STORE Called the “green monster” by some, the Hovey and Clyde Dry Good Store was the first building built in Greenville after the Civil War. The two-story structure was built in 1869. The building’s second floor had a large hall the Democrats used in 1876 to plan the gubernatorial election of Wade Hampton. The building was torn down in 2010, after the case went to court and the city’s Design and Preservation Commission allowed a developer to demolish the building if it was deemed structurally unsalvageable.

THE CURETON HOUSE The gray Victorian house at 133 Augusta St. was the home of Josephine Cureton until her death in 2010. Cureton’s family had owned the house since 1912, when her father bought it from prominent builder Jacob W. Cagle 24 years after its construction. In her will, Cureton said she wanted the house to be demolished and the property used for a headquarters of the South Carolina Children’s Theatre. The theater expects to break ground on the project in September.

THE OLD RECORD BUILDING The Old Record Building was demolished in 1924 to make way for a new 10-story Chamber of Commerce Building. The building was designed by famous Charleston architect Robert Mills, the designer of the Washington Monument. The building was built in 1820 and served as the county courthouse until 1855.

OLD CITY JAIL Built at the corner of Broad and Falls streets, the old city jail was erected to house “the cleverest crooks who may from time to time find their way within the keeping of the county.” The jail was completed in 1916 and could house 72 men and a few women.

The jail, which had a residence for the jailer and seven fireplaces, was expanded in 1958.

It closed in 1976 and was demolished in the late 1990s.

Some believe that when a property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is safe from being demolished.

Wrong.

While the National Register of Historic Places has a lengthy application process, is more difficult to achieve, and is more prestigious, it offers no protection for historic structures or neighborhoods.

“The National Registry is a designation, not a protection,” said Greenville historian Judy Bainbridge.

In fact, it says so on the register’s website: “National Register listing places no obligations on private property owners.

There are no restrictions on the use, treatment, transfer, or disposition of private property.”

That’s not the case if a property is in one of the city’s Historic Preservation Overlay Districts. Property owners in those districts must obtain a certificate of appropriateness before doing any exterior improvements.

“No exterior portion of any building or other structure shall be erected, altered, restored, demolished, or moved within a historic district until after an application for a Certificate of Appropriateness has been submitted and approved,” according to the city’s guidelines. The Design Review Board Neighborhood Panel approves the requests.

Each of the city’s seven historic overlay districts has its own guidelines.

Attempts to gain historic district designation from the city must originate from the neighborhood. If a preliminary review indicates the neighborhood could qualify, a task force examines the proposal more thoroughly, drawing up preliminary boundaries and holding public meetings to see if there is enough support. Ultimately, the city’s DRB, Planning Commission, and City Council must approve the overlay district.

The last historic overlay district established in the city was the Heritage Historic District in 2001.

Adalyn, with her straight brown hair, is the last in line to leave the playground. She plants herself firmly 5 feet from the door to A Child’s Haven. Spreading out her arms for balance, she watches the preschooler ahead of her walk into the building. Adalyn will not move and is shaking her head.

At age 4, Adalyn might be expected to know better. If this were a day care or preschool playground, she would be disciplined for her obstinance. In fact, the little girl was expelled from three day care centers. Her mother, Amanda Morgan of Easley, lost her job as a certified medical assistant because she could not find child care for Adalyn, whom she describes as both sweet and very theatrical.

“I’m a single mother and had one-and-a-half years without income,” Morgan says. “It was the scariest time of my life.”

Fortunately, a friend recommended Morgan take Adalyn to A Child’s Haven, where her daughter could receive therapy and help for her communication delays and anger issues. Each month, Morgan has seen improvements.

At A Child’s Haven, young children who are delayed physically, mentally, and behaviorally

learn how to handle everyday challenges. They practice new skills that most children pick up on their own. Instead of teachers, they have highly skilled therapeutic providers. Instead of classroom instruction, they have therapy.

Even the facility’s playground is different. It’s a natural playground with a climbing amphitheater rock, box gardens, a slide built into the hill, and a large pad with water jets.

Also, trained providers visit families’ homes to observe and offer parenting tips and advice.

Amanda Morgan learned a great trick in dealing with Adalyn’s frequent temper tantrums. She now pulls out flashcards and distracts her daughter, asking her to select a card. “It takes her brain someplace else for a minute, and I never would have thought of that,” Morgan says.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, A Child’s Haven is preparing for the next few decades with big plans. These include a tiered garden with a child education and activity building and an anniversary fundraiser, hosted in the fall by Greenville philanthropist Betty Farr and former Governor and Secretary of Education Dick Riley.

Helping young children overcome developmental delays that might hurt their ability to learn is a great cause, Riley says.

“Betty has 15 grandchildren, and I have 14. We’re experts in that field,” Riley jokes.

“The earlier you get children into A Child’s Haven, the better it is. So they started an infant center to help these early preschool kids,” he says.

One of this year’s fundraising goals is for the organization to become less financially dependent on Medicaid funds, says Laurie Rovin, executive director.

A Child’s Haven’s $2.2 million fiscal year 2017 budget includes $794,723 in Medicaid funds, which support individual, classroom, and family therapy, as well as home visitation and transportation.

The organization had a $100,000 Medicaid budget deficit this past year, and it was covered through donations from United Way, Synnex Share the Magic, foundations, corporations, and private donors, Rovin says.

“The challenge with Medicaid is that it drives treatment,” Rovin says. “We have children we feel need to remain in treatment, but Medicaid wants us to discharge the child.”

Rovin gives the example of a 3-year-old child who witnessed a parent kill the child’s twin sibling. One parent was arrested, and the toddler later was removed from the other parent’s custody. The child was referred to A Child’s Haven because of developmental delays, but Medicaid thought the child should be discharged after three months. Believing the 3-year-old needed more help, A Child’s Haven made the decision to find alternative funding for the additional time in treatment.

“If we do not agree clinically with Medicaid, we will keep the child,” Rovin says.

For this reason, and because the organization plans to expand, A Child’s Haven has started the Lifting Lives campaign. There are 70 children on a waiting list for its services. Eventually, its fairly new 11-acre site will be able to expand to 96 children. Last year, the organization served a total of 120 children and families.

Success in reaching these goals is partly dependent on the organization’s ability to convince corporate donors of its return on investment to the community.

“Some of the most astounding numbers I’ve seen are that when you spend a dollar on helping a child, then you get $1.85 or more back,” says Sims Propst, senior vice president of Park Sterling Bank and a member of A Child’s Haven’s advisory board.

“When you get their brains going in the right direction, it’s much less work than having children repeat a grade, and it greatly increases their chances of graduating and going to college,” Propst says.

and lunches. A LiveWell Greenville partner, the organization grows tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, watermelon, cucumbers, strawberries, and herbs in its playground area.

“Children can eat some food off the vine, like strawberries and tomatoes,” says A Child’s Haven chef John Zuber. “One boy picked a green strawberry, cleaned it on his shirt, and said he loved it.”

The surplus fresh produce could be sent to neighborhood markets, benefiting the facility’s Berea neighborhood.

The program’s success is as much dependent on working with parents as it is working with the children.

“A lot of times the parents are good people, but they don’t know how to parent,” Propst says.

The families need so much help that parenting can take a backseat.

“We have had families that were homeless, and we helped to connect them to the resources they needed to get a home and job,” Rovin says. “Our mission is to treat children with developmental delays as a result of limited resources, abuse, or neglect and to provide support and education to their families.”

Families, visitors, researchers, and others can observe classroom therapy sessions via two-way mirrors and learn how effective parenting works. “Parents see the kids are better behaving here than at home,” says Alesia Jones, a parent and family clinical director.

Therapeutic providers, gently and patiently, guide children to more acceptable behaviors.

That’s why Adalyn’s therapeutic provider does not pick her up and carry her into the classroom when the little girl refuses to budge. Instead, she coaxes Adalyn to use her words. The girl finally explains: She didn’t get to say goodbye to her friend, a fourth-grade girl from Christ Church Episcopal School, whose class was volunteering on the playground.

So the therapeutic provider takes Adalyn by the hand and leads her over to the older girl. Adalyn hugs her friend, grins, and runs into the building.

Hearing stories like this gives Amanda Morgan hope that her daughter soon will be able to handle school. If this happens, Morgan will return to college and complete a registered nursing program.

“I feel like we should have been here earlier, but we had to learn the hard way,” Morgan says.

Meyer Center golf tournament raises more than $500,000 for students with special needs The Meyer Center for Special Children hosted the 29th annual Kids Classic Golf Tournament at Green Valley Country Club and The Cliffs Valley, Keowee Falls and Mountain Park courses, raising $570,00 to support children with disabilities. “I play a lot of golf and this is hands-down the best charity tournament in the Upstate,” said Clarence Edwards, event founder and board member.

Northwestern Mutual celebrates volunteer work with $15,000 grant Through its foundation, Northwestern Mutual presented Chris and Kelly’s HOPE Foundation with a $15,000 grant on behalf of Steve Grant, a recipient of the company’s Community Service Award. Grant created Chris and Kelly’s HOPE Foundation in 2012 after the loss of his two sons to accidental overdoses. vichyssoise-style white grape gazpacho with marcona almonds, house-made focaccia with local goat cheese and house-cured prosciutto, seared foie gras on corn French toast with beet puree and a maple syrup demi-glace.

These were the first three of nine dishes the new Rick Erwin’s West End Grille executive chef sent out during a recent tasting.

Between the range of flavors, the variety of ingredients, and the artistic plating, it was clear to the diners that chef Wilberto Sauceda was making a bold statement about the direction he plans to take the traditional steakhouse.

The next four courses the Miami native Sauceda sent out — prosciutto cro-

quettes, a deconstructed Greek heirloom tomato salad, certified Kobe beef ribeye tartare with a rosemary sauce, and a Nigerian tiger prawn on Carolina gold rice paired with a seared filet of loup de mare (a Greek fish) — were, again, surprising for the setting, given the clear Mediterranean influence.

The entrée course was in keeping with the steakhouse location but with Sauceda’s own touches of chimichurri on a Kobe filet and parsnip puree on a Kobe ribeye paired with a mini butternut squash hollowed out and filled with a butternut soup topped with fontina cheese. Tri-colored carrots and roasted onion with vibrant green pesto completed the dish.

pagne flute concluded the dinner.

Some of those dishes from the tasting may appear on the new menu Sauceda is developing for the flagship Rick Erwin’s restaurant. The chef says the tasting dinner is a clear indication of the shape the menu will take.

“We are going to be different,” Sauceda says. “I’m bringing a lot of seafood.

It’s time for a change. They don’t want to be just a steakhouse.”

For nine years, Sauceda cooked with James Beard Foundation award-winner and internationally recognized Miami chef Michelle Bernstein before moving to Greenville. Yet he doesn’t care for the pretense of having a big name or even schmoozing with those who rate as such.

“I’ve met a lot of big chefs,” he says.

“I’ve cooked with them, gone out and

had a drink with them, but I don’t care about that.”

While in high school in Miami, Sauceda started out as a line cook a few hours a week at a Brazilian steakhouse. He then moved on to a Caribbean restaurant. Once he learned that style, he moved on to Mediterranean, and finally, joined Bernstein, known as an expert in Latin-style flavors of cooking, to learn classical French technique to round out his training.

Over the years, Sauceda traveled the world with Bernstein, cooking at food and wine festivals. The James Beard winner taught Sauceda not to let the critics get to him and not to compromise.

“Michelle used to say to me, ‘Don’t ever change who you are,’” he says.

came six years ago by way of his future wife, and Greenville native, Kelsey Crenshaw. It wasn’t long after she and Sauceda had started dating that she introduced him to her hometown.

They married two years ago — Asada was one of the food trucks that catered their reception — and in November 2016, Sauceda decided it was time to move to Greenville.

“We’d come back and visit, and I’d think ‘Greenville’s not there yet,’” Sauceda says.

Then one day, he visited Tandem Crêperie and Coffeehouse in Travelers Rest. He had already noted the former High Cotton (now Halls Chophouse) as

a restaurant that signified growth in Greenville’s culinary scene.

“Greenville was ready,” he says. “It was time.”

They moved earlier this year, and Sauceda joined Rick Erwin’s West End Grille as sous chef. He was quickly promoted to executive chef.

Despite the impressive resume, Sauceda’s motivation in the kitchen, whether at the Aspen Food and Wine Classic or in Greenville’s West End, can be narrowed down to one simple fact.

“I just love food,” he says.

We celebrated our family’s last high school graduation this past weekend, so I spent a little time making the house look festive and ready for a summer of suppers on the deck, fun movie nights, and lazy weekend mornings (at least occasionally). way disrespectful. The quilted flag-andstar garland below the mantel was something the Mister and I purchased on our honeymoon in Dixville Notch, N.H. Dixville Notch is where the first ballots are cast for each presidential election, and the garland is a fun reminder of that bit of trivia.

I also try to look for older flags or those with a little wear whenever I go antiquing, but I have been known to dye flags in brewed tea or coffee to get the look I want.

My own hydrangeas are just beginning to bloom, so I added flowers to the house by mixing a couple of big grocery store bouquets of hydrangea and sunflowers with some ferns

and sticks from the yard. Then I added some parade flags to create the arrangements on the mantel and the table centerpiece.

Our graduation dinner afforded us the opportunity for the first serious cookout of the year. My faithful Blue Willow dishes once again work into the color scheme. The gingham cutlery is from Target, purchased years ago. For the centerpiece I used a divided Coca-Cola crate that I bought this past January at Reninger’s Antiques Market in Mount Dora, Fla. Sunflowers from the aforementioned grocery store bouquet, dime store parade flags, and a few sprigs of basil made a fragrant (but not sweet) centerpiece.

We made sure the outside of the house looked welcoming, too, with a little bunting and a few small flags popped into the planters. Her Royal Highness Charlotte, our corgi, waited to royally greet our guests. She’s a bit of a Tory sympathizer, but we like her anyway and plan to celebrate the season with her all summer long.

Curious George has ridden in a fire engine and a hot air balloon. He’s gone to the zoo, the aquarium, and a baseball game. Now, he’ll spend the summer in Greenville.

On Saturday, the bilingual exhibit “Curious George: Let’s Get Curious!” opens at the Upcountry History Museum-Furman University.

The exhibit will give children a glimpse into George’s world. Inside the museum, you’ll find the apartment in which he lives with the Man with the Yellow Hat, a sidewalk produce stand, a construction site, a city park, a miniature golf course, a space rocket, a farm, and a museum within the Upcountry History Museum.

Each is filled with its own hands-on activities that emphasize STEAM subjects through interactive activities designed to reward children’s natural curiosity.

“Kids are naturally curious about science and math, and this allows them to explore the things they see in everyday life just like

Curious George,” said Kristen Pace, Upcountry History Museum’s community engagement coordinator. “Curious George doesn’t hold back. If he sees something he’s intrigued about, he’s in it. We want children to use that natural curiosity to explore STEAM.” George, a good-hearted little monkey whose curiosity is constantly getting him in trouble, has been a children’s favorite since 1941, when the first volume in the “Curious George” series was published. In his initial adventure, George jumped off a big ship, phoned the fire department by accident, escaped from prison, and floated into the air under a big canopy of balloons.

The exhibit, created by the Minnesota Children’s Museum in St. Paul in 2007, is perfect for children ages 3 to 7 and their families, Pace said. It features life-size dioramas from the “Curious George” books and the animated show on PBS Kids. The exhibit was designed in partnership with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group.

When children explore the familiar buildings from the books and television series, they’ll be able to push buttons, turn knobs, and open cubbies. At the sidewalk produce stand, they’ll be able to sort and weigh col-

orful pieces of fruits and vegetables. At the construction site, they’ll be able to carry blocks, operate pulleys, and explore engineering through design. They’ll also explore color and light, angles and slopes.

Several special Curious George-related events are scheduled throughout the summer, including Family Fun Days in July, August, and September. On July 2, Curious George and children at the museum will learn about Independence Day. On Aug. 6, they’ll spend the day playing the Curious George way. The last Family Fun Day with Curious George is Sept. 3.

On June 12, the museum’s Monday Matinee Movie will be “Curious George” featuring Will Ferrell and Drew Barrymore. The movie starts at 2 p.m.

Her Story, Their Story ‘Chasing Capri’ tells the story of the Upstate trans youth who sued the DMV and won VINCENT HARRIS | CONTRIBUTOR

In March 2014, Capri Culpepper entered the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles to get a driver’s license. The 17-year-old Culpepper was born male but had begun to identify as female, so she showed up in full makeup for her photo.

The DMV wasn’t having it.

Culpepper was told she had to remove her makeup. She was a “male,” and her makeup constituted a “disguise.” In response, Culpepper filed a lawsuit against the state.

Over time, she began to speak out on the issue of transgender rights, becoming one of the faces of a debate that would come to a head with North Carolina’s controversial “bathroom bill.”

In the end, the DMV was forced to change their policy regarding driver’s license photos to allow for makeup on men, as long as that person typically wore makeup.

The victory was bittersweet for Culpepper, however. The Anderson native was bullied so much at her high school that she had to transfer.

Through it all, an acquaintance of hers from Anderson, Caleb Holland, an aspiring filmmaker and student at the Savannah College of Art and Design, was by her side, filming a documentary about Culpepper’s junior and senior years. The final result is the documentary, “Chasing Capri,” which was released online last Friday.

Over the two years that Holland worked on the film, a series of historic events caused him to change the scope his film. Today, instead of telling Culpepper’s story alone, “Chasing Capri” now tells the stories of other transgender youths, a contentious election, a controversial piece of legislation, and a horrific massacre.

“Capri and I had met previously, and I reached out to her because I felt that it would be a compelling story given the rise in trans visibility,” Holland says. “But along her journey, so many things happened culturally that really shifted her life personally, as well as the LGBTQ community across the South, so we kind of expanded as we went.”

The documentary mixes footage of Culpepper and fellow trans youths Corey Maison and Shakina Mayfack as they discuss the discrimination and violence they’ve faced for simply being who they feel they are.

all, scenes from the aftermath of the Pulse nightclub shootings in Orlando, Fla. “The film starts with a little history of Capri’s activism before the DMV case, and it ends at her graduation,” Holland says. “But we couldn’t have anticipated the bathroom bill or the Pulse shooting, so in 2016, we started going to all of these different places and covering the response to the bathroom bill and seeing how such a simple piece of legislation can hurt people on such a personal level.”

Holland adds, “And then during all of that, there was the Pulse shooting out of nowhere.

For me, I felt the weight of that. I went down to Orlando a day or two after the shootings happened, and it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, filming the memorials and vigils and feeling them in a really personal way.”

Much like Culpepper’s story, the Pulse shooting was personal for Holland not only because of the staggering loss of life but also because as a young gay man growing up in Anderson, he knew what Culpepper had experienced firsthand.

“It was incredibly difficult for me, and I saw a lot of the same struggles that she faced in my own journey,” Holland says. “I know personally how incredibly difficult it is growing up in a small community and being a part of the LGBTQ community, and part of what that film addresses is the need for people to find different families if acceptance cannot be found within their own families.”

Ultimately, despite the moments of fear and uncertainty, that might be the most important message of “Chasing Capri,” one that Holland says he had trouble finding in his teens: There’s power in greater understanding.

“I think if we can continue to foster empathy and conversation in small communities, people can understand that we should all be proud of who we are,” he says, “and that no one should have to be afraid.”

Stone Mural Project unveils butterfly mural at 223 W. Stone Ave.

The rains of the past two weeks didn’t delay progress on this year’s Stone Mural Project at the Hammack Law Firm, 223 W. Stone Ave. The fourth mural in as many years, this year’s butterfly-themed addition was designed by printmaker Sunny Mullarkey McGowan. The mural was scheduled to be unveiled at a small public ceremony this past Wednesday.

“We want everyone exposed to art,” says Jean Wilson Freeman, Stone Mural Project co-chair.

“It’s the great equalizer.”

Last year’s midcentury-inspired floral mural at 217 E. Stone Ave., designed by Freeman, became the backdrop of family holiday cards and had thousands of mentions on social media in less than a year’s time.

Stone Mural Project is a collaboration between local artists; Stone Academy, an arts magnet school; the City of Greenville; and for the last two years, students from Furman University’s art and community engagement class. Suburban Paint provided the paint and supplies, and Paul Hammack donated the wall space.

“This is the second year we’ve been involved with the Stone Mural Project, and I think it’s been a really great partnership for all of us,” says Lib Ramos of Makers Collective, who is assisting with the Furman class.

The mural’s theme each year is taken from Stone Academy’s school-year theme. This year’s is “Every day is a new beginning.”

McGowan, who is known for her naturethemed relief prints, knew immediately upon hearing the theme what her mural was going to be – the lifecycle of a butterfly.

“The subject matter fit perfectly,” she says.

The previous three murals have been brightly colored scenes that range from an aquarium to a take on George Seurat’s “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” McGowan’s, in contrast, is monochromatic, using only black, white, and greige (gray/beige). It is intended to look as though large wooden blocks were used to print the images on the wall.

The mural is divided in three sections featuring the eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly, from caterpillar, to chrysalis, to butterfly; the species is the official state butterfly. All of the vegetation depicted in each frame is part of the insect’s natural habitat and diet.

Stone Academy fifth-graders assisted McGowan in painting the mural in shifts. Prior to the project’s beginning, McGowan spent two days as artist-in-residence at Stone teaching the students relief printmaking. This is the first year the mural artist has done a residency with the school.

“It helps them understand the artist they’re going to be working with,” McGowan says. “Each of us is different. It introduces them to how I work.”

Super Hero Cycle Greenville Health System has teamed up with Miracle Hill Ministries to host the Super Hero Cycle at the Greer Memorial Hospital campus on June 3. In this new fundraising event to benefit the Upstate’s more than 3,000 homeless children and adults, cyclists of all ages will bike courses that range in length from 17 to 81 miles, while family and friends dressed as superheroes cheer them on. Greenville Comedy Marathon The members of Alchemy Comedy, No Expectations Comedy, and Laughing Stock Improv, along with other special guests from the Upstate, will soon put their comedic skills and sharp wit to the ultimate test. Alchemy’s annual Greenville Comedy Marathon, featuring 30 straight hours of laugh-outloud shows, begins Friday, June 9, at 6 p.m. and ends Saturday, June 10, with a final performance at 11:30 p.m. The Marathon will feature close to 130 performers.

“This big idea of the Marathon is to display to the Upstate just how much great comedy there is here,” says Harrison Brookie, founder of Alchemy Comedy.

Regular attendees of Alchemy Comedy’s weekly performances will recognize a few of the scheduled show formats, but many “are bonus extras and different than what we normally do,” Brookie says. Some of the unique performances include Local Legends: Improv Comedy Inspired by Karaoke Songs, South Carolina Children’s Theatre: Adliberations (Teen Improv), and a Stand-up Comedy Showcase from No Expectations.

The marathon also features an “all-nighter cast” of four fearless comedians — Wendy Pisor, Stacey Cherubini, Nico Estavez, and Nate Oulette — who are taking on the annual challenge of performing for 12 hours straight, midnight to noon, on Saturday, June 10. New this year is an all-nighter challenge for attendees, who can win a spot in Alchemy’s Improv 101 class by staying all 12 hours.

’50s Flashback: Elvis Presley Meets CBS’ Walter Cronkite In the late 1950s, Greenville, like the rest of the United States, was struck by Elvis fever. Presley was so beloved that East North Street Elementary School had 10 separate Elvis fan clubs. At the same time, CBS’ Walter Cronkite aired his report “The Road Ahead” that brought the horrid state of South Carolina’s roads into the public interest.

For seven years, Pam Stone starred on the hit sitcom “Coach,” but following the end of the Craig T. Nelson comedy, she moved to the Upstate as a promise to herself that she would leave Hollywood before she turned 40. The years that followed were spent hosting her own radio show from an outbuilding behind a barn at her country home and writing a syndicated humor column for regional papers, endeavors that both won Stone awards. Recently, she published her debut novel, “Girls Like Her,” which she will be signing at Fiction Addiction on June 10. Fiction Addiction owner Jill Hendrix is pleased to host the former “Coach” actress at her Greenville book signing. Hendrix says, “Pam is very engaging, approachable, and, of course, funny, and we know our customers will be thrilled to meet her.” —Kristen Ferris

On Saturday, June 10, these two ’50s icons will meet in Greenville. Walter Cronkite, played by Larry Bounds, will interview 23-year-old Elvis Presley, played by TJ Jones, who has just been drafted into the Army. After the interview, Elvis will perform, giving the audience a chance to dance along to some old time rock ’n’ roll.

If you’ve seen singer/guitarist Kelly Jo Ramirez around town doing solo acoustic shows, you might be a little surprised by her new project, Phat Lip. It’s a full-on dive into infectious, percussion-heavy Latin pop that’s more polished, and more fun, than anything she’s ever done.

The inspiration for Phat Lip, both the name of her new project and her new EP, came at the end of her last band, the Kelly Jo Connect. “I had to reinvent myself if I wanted to keep going,” she says. “And I was leaning towards either a hip-hop thing or Latin thing.” So Ramirez assembled a group of all-star musicians including bassist Shannon Hoover, guitarist Matt Dingledine, and keyboardist Adam McFarlane and headed to Studio 101 in Spartanburg to return to her roots. “I feel like that comes from my childhood, listening to salsa songs,” she says. “It’s so much fun, and it’s the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to be able to do it. I feel like it’s a culmination of a lot of things that I’ve done musically.” —Vincent Harris

Depending on when you might have seen Hillary Keane over the last few years, you might have a totally different idea of what she sounds like. She’s played extensively as a solo acoustic folk artist, but she also made music bordering on hard rock with the early iterations of her band, the Hillary Keane Project. Nowadays, the Project has moved more toward a mix of those two styles that puts the spotlight on her sensual, grittily playful singing. “We’ve been trying different combinations of people over the last two years,” Keane says. “At first we had a drummer and a bassist that had kind of a metal background, and while that worked to give us a rock sound and a heavier feel, I still wanted to go in more of a soulful direction, trying to touch back on my acoustic roots to get back to my goals as a songwriter.”

And her voice sounds a lot different than it might have a couple of years ago, too. “When I first started playing with a band, I was very focused on making sure I had all the notes right,” she says. “I’ve become a lot more comfortable, and I feel like I’m reaching a new level of richness with my voice.” —Vincent Harris

The Chase Walker Band

On the surface, it might seem like Chase Walker, singer, songwriter, and guitarist for the Chase Walker Band, is similar to Greenville’s own Marcus King. After all, his playing is steeped in the blues (especially when he plays his stinging, fluid solos on a National Resonator guitar). And he already has released an album (“Not Quite Legal”) despite being only 18 years old.

He’s even been featured in Guitar Player magazine just like King was.

But for Walker, the blues is more an element of his sound than his main focus. “Starting out, I wasn’t too into the blues,” Walker says. “But my parents used to listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan in the car, so when I started playing guitar — at age 11 — I really got into him, and that’s where it really started for me.” What’s different about Walker’s approach, though, is that he’s far less interested in dazzling solos than he is in serving the song, whether it’s a roadhouse blues number, a hard rocker, or a country-tinged ballad. “I’ve been to concerts by renowned guitar players, and their shows end up being a few verses of a song and then 2 1/2 minutes of guitar soloing,” he says. “And I’m not really interested in that.” —Vincent Harris

Lessons from Saint Junior

If I close my eyes, I can still picture him wearing those overalls, rocking in the Hinkle rocker on his front porch, waving at me from his old farmhouse in Springfield, Tenn., just outside of Nashville, where I lived in the early ’90s. Saint Junior in overalls.

You might think he’d have spoken with a deep, booming voice because he was a giant of a man, but you’d have another think coming. The first time we spoke, I lost my hand in his in a friendly handshake. I looked up at him and said, “Hello, my name is Trevor.” He looked down at me and said, “Well, hello there. I’m Junior,” in a voice so high-pitched and crackly it sounded as if he’d taken in a deep breath of helium from a balloon.

That voice both startled and astonished me.

He never learned to read, add and subtract, or tell time. He couldn’t carry on a conversation about history or current events or the future.

He didn’t go to school. There were no special education classes in his younger days in the countryside. He simply stayed with his momma and daddy and helped them on the farm. He lived each minute in the moment.

If you asked, “Junior, how old are you?” he would answer, “Lord have mercy, I can’t remember!” The truth is, he didn’t know.

If he needed to sign his name, he would ask, “Can you help me?” He didn’t know how.

He did know about life, though. He knew more about life than many highly educated people I know. He knew more about life than me.

You know the movie “Forrest Gump,” don’t you? It was based on the novel by Winston Groom by the same name. Tom Hanks played the part of Forrest in the movie and won an Academy Award for his efforts.

In the movie, people call Forrest stupid all the time. He responds, “Momma always told me stupid is as stupid does.” And what does Forrest do? He goes out each day with eyes full of wonder and a heart full of love. There’s nothing stupid about that. This kind of childlikeness brings redemption to the troubled people, troubled places, and troubled times around him.

Junior brought that kind of redemption, too.

Here are some things I want you to know about him.

He loved watches. He couldn’t tell time, but he loved them. He had a drawer full of them. He asked for one on each special occasion of his life.

My favorite memory about his watches comes from a Sunday morning at a small church. I asked the congregation to bow in prayer. I waited for several seconds before I began the prayer to allow a stillness and a quiet to descend on the place and on the people. At the most still and quiet moment, a “Cock-a-doodle-doo! Cock-adoodle-doo!! Cock-a-doodle-doo!!!” broke out.

I thought a rooster had come into the church!

I opened my left eye and saw Junior pushing buttons on his watch. I saw people around him pushing buttons on his watch. The “Cock-adoodle-doo’s” kept coming until someone gently led Junior and his digital rooster out of the side door of the sanctuary. We all burst out laughing.

It was one of the greatest prayers of all time.

He held my hand when we crossed the street, and the memories of those tender moments still cause a small tear to roll down my cheek.

When we walked into the grocery store, people always asked, “Junior, how are you?” He’d respond, “I’m fine. How you doing?” I’d say, “Junior, everyone knows you. Who was that?”

He’d answer, “Lord have mercy, I don’t know.

But they’re my friend!” People always smiled when they saw Junior.

When I walked into the senior citizens center and he saw me, he would walk over to me, wrap me into his big arms, and lead me to the closest person to us. “I want you to meet my friend,” he’d say.

He was one of the best friends I’ve ever had.

If I spoke to a group and allowed time for questions and answers, he always yelled out, “You know, you couldn’t do without me!”

He was right.

Saint Junior, full of humility, wonder and love, I learned to listen to your life even though there was an absence of many words between us.

Perhaps that’s the greatest thing I’ve ever learned: to listen to people’s lives, to listen to life itself.

You taught me.

Virgil Morrison Jr. was a 68-year-old man when I met him. Everyone called him Junior, but there was nothing “junior” about him. He was 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighed 300 pounds. His eyes were milky blue like the Tennessee sky on a cloudless morning.

His smile was toothless and endearing. His nose was the shape of a cucumber from a vine in the garden. His feet were size 16. His shoes looked like boats. He was balding, with clumps of white hair on the sides and back of his head, and the sun reflected off his bald spot and shined an aura around his face that made him look like a saint. He wore blue denim Liberty brand overalls.
