Our state Legislature: comfortable or courageous?

As Election Day draws near, how would you answer this question: “Is your state government comfortable or courageous with facing the problems of our community?” Sadly, many of us know that our career politicians are comfortable. They relish serving themselves and strive to keep the status quo instead of boldly taking on the issues of our state.

For far too long we’ve held our elected officials to the lowest standard, not the highest.

When elected officials are brought up on ethics violations, we shake our heads and say, “That’s just the way it is in Columbia.”

We’ve seen representatives sell their votes to the highest bidder, as was the case with former State Rep. Rick Quinn, R-Lexington, who pleaded guilty to misconduct while in office and was let off with a slap on the wrist. Additionally, we saw the chairman of the state Senate Ethics Committee get pulled over for a DUI accident, reportedly lie about it to an officer, then get released on a technicality. We’ve seen nepotism run rampant with legislators’ family members being appointed to boards that get contracts from our state.

Unfortunately, this is status quo for our state.

As a husband, father, South Carolinian, and candidate, I find this unacceptable.

There’s a term in the military called “mission creep,” which is a slow compromising of values and acceptance of the status quo until a toxic, dysfunctional environment emerges. That’s exactly what has happened in our state government. Our elected officials should reflect our values, and it’s past time to bring integrity back to our Legislature.

I’ve lived by a code all my adult life, from the Honor Code at The Citadel to the Ranger Creed in the Army. Those codes demand a daily life of higher ethical living, and the same should be expected of our elected officials. If we can’t expect basic ethical conduct from our elected officials, how can we expect them to handle our taxpayer money, or big issues

such as education, roads, or our retirement plans?

The first step to address the systemic problems in state government is major ethics reform. Our state ethics laws are vague and toothless, allowing corrupt politicians to skate by with no real punishment. We need greater transparency and accountability to root out corruption, and stricter punishments for those who abuse the public’s trust.

In addition, I believe statutory term limits will ensure elected officials do not lose touch with the voters who sent them there. I view elected office like an Army assignment.

You give it all you’ve got for several years in serving others, then you move on. It should be the same with our elected officials. Elected office should be a season of service, not a lifetime occupation. That’s why I’ve pledged to serve only eight years in the Legislature.

I never want to forget why I’m serving or lose touch with everyday South Carolinians.

The honor of my life was leading American soldiers in combat. Many times, I would tell Rangers in my command that you can be either comfortable or courageous in taking on challenges — you can’t be both. Let’s elect citizen legislators that are courageous when facing the problems of our state. Too much is at stake for us to continue to elect the same officials who will simply make the same mistakes and empower the same special interests. I look forward to bringing courageous leadership to Columbia to address these issues and help secure a brighter future for our children and their children.

Investing to Grow: We need transit infrastructure that works

For the last three months, I have ridden the bus to work.

Since I live close to downtown, my average commute is nine minutes. The bus stops one block from my house and drops me off next to the parking garage where I used to pay $80 a month to let my car depreciate in the shade. The total cost of a bus pass: $1.50. The bus runs every hour and has never been more than five minutes late. The drivers are friendly, and the buses are clean. For my location and my commute, it’s a no-brainer. So I sold my car.

I admit, however, that I didn’t go the whole hog out the gate. I tried this as an experiment for the first month because my job takes me places the bus won’t go. Enter Uber.

When filling in the transit gaps with Uber, I have been able to travel anywhere I need to be for work and play. Moreover, the cost of taking Uber everywhere is still less than the total cost of car ownership if you have to park in a garage downtown. My kids are always in my wife’s car, and it works just

fine for a family. (Who wants to move car seats anyway?)

So why invest in transit infrastructure when you can Uber everywhere? Well, not everyone can afford Uber, much less the cost of a car, yet even cold-hearted Mr. Burns understands economies of scale. Even though I am a red-blooded, gun-toting, free-market conservative, I tell you that refusing to invest in transit is economic suicide.

Urban density is how cities grow and prosper. This was made abundantly clear last month in a presentation to our County Council by Urban3. As I wait for the bus each morning, I have noticed that at least 90 percent of the passing cars have a single occupant. They drive alone to work and park in a garage or parking lot that generates almost no economic return— creates zero jobs. Consolidating the logistics of moving people would free up the valuable real estate and worker productivity lost in traffic. It would also eliminate the biggest threat facing Greenville. We will choke ourselves out and wither on the vine if we allow the weeds of congestion to overtake us.

Check out the bus routes on the Greenlink website, or use Google Transit to plan a trip. Ride the bus or the trolley.

Talk to your officials at County Council and City Hall. Ask them to support transit. You can read about all the improvements coming to Greenlink, but we need dedicated, local funding to roads and transportation. After all, you have invested in a job and a home here. Don’t you want that investment to prosper?

A March for their lives For about 30 minutes after 2 p.m. on Saturday, you couldn’t hear car horns blaring or brake pads squeaking; there was no noise of shop doors opening and closing while customers scurried from store to store. The normal sounds of a Saturday in downtown were, instead, replaced by chants, singing, and the soft refrains of “We shall overcome,” which filled the air as more than 2,000 demonstrators filled Greenville’s Main Street.

The march began in the NoMA area of downtown and ended about 10 blocks later in front of town hall where students and community activists gave speeches, sang, and fostered an atmosphere of hope and change for the future.

Around America and the world, more than 800 cities held March For Our Lives events last Saturday, all of them organized by students, calling for increased safety measures for gun purchases and gun ownership. Greenville’s march was organized by Avi GoldsteinMittag, director of March For Our Lives Greenville, along with 19 other students from local high schools and colleges. The students partnered with several local community groups for the march, with all the organizers emphasizing the need to be a community on this issue.

“It’s not about the Second Amendment.

It’s about these kids staying safe,” said Justice Richardson, a member of the

Freedom Fighters. Based in Greenville, Freedom Fighters is a volunteer group that promotes peace, unity, and justice at the local and national levels.

“We’ve been fighting, advocating for peace for a long time,” Richardson explained. “Anyone that needs our support that’s on the right path, we lend a hand with open arms. It’s too much going on for us to just fight ourselves.”

Community was a common concern for the marchers. Dr. Bill Laing, a veteran, and his wife came to the march from Lawrenceville, Ga. “This is where our children are, our grandchildren are, and we wanted to support them and the safety they would have here.”

However support and community were certainly not the only concern of those gathered. Laing continued, “We are here to raise awareness and to get our politicians to see that there is support for tighter gun control.” Student organizers also arranged for there to be stations for people to register to vote before the upcoming elections later this year.

Goldstein-Mittag reiterated the student’s focus on changing the legislation. “We are marching to show lawmakers that we are here and we are going to continue to demand action until something is done.”

Greenville Zoo to construct nursery with viewing area for baby leopards Visitors to the Greenville Zoo may soon have the chance to get up close and personal with one of the rarest — and most adorable — big cat species in the world.

The zoo announced last week that it plans to construct a nursery for its Amur leopards.

The 240-square-foot facility will include three bedrooms and a viewing window for zoo visitors to observe newborn cubs as they mature, according to Greenville Zoo administrator Jeff Bullock.

Bullock said the zoo currently places Amur leopard cubs in a private enclosure for several months so they can bond with their mother and build up enough strength to safely navigate the obstacles in their exhibit.

The Greenville Zoo welcomed its first pair of Amur leopard cubs last year. The cubs were born to Jade, the zoo’s 7-year-old female, and Nelkan, an 11-year-old male.

They were put on exhibit in September, according to Bullock. -Andrew Moore

County Square, Camperdown, and City Park are three of the major projects that will transform the look and feel of downtown Greenville.

STICK TO THE PLAN It’s a strategy Greenville has used to turn downtown from a collection of vacant buildings and empty streets into a vibrant and nationally recognized model for redevelopment through effective urban planning.

It started in the late 1970s when the late former Greenville Mayor Max Heller, the patron saint of the city’s downtown renaissance, suggested turning Main Street, then a four-lane thoroughfare through the heart of the city, into a pedestrian-friendly tree-lined two-lane street where families would gather, diners would enjoy meals on sidewalk cafes, and shoppers would stroll from specialty shop to specialty shop.

Add to that a tricky public-private partnership that brought the Hyatt, and downtown’s transformation was underway.

Subsequent plans called for development to move south and then off Main Street into the five “corners” of downtown.

Progress didn’t come easy. Many of the projects that made downtown what it is today sparked controversy at the time they were built. But city officials stuck to the plan, and now downtown Greenville is a must-see for other cit-

ies that are trying to pump life into their cores.

Now, it’s time for an update since Greenville’s downtown plan is 10 years old.

Big questions to be answered: • HOW can downtown continue to grow while maintaining its authenticity?

•H OW should the city’s central business district position itself in the market?

• HOW tall should buildings be?

• WHAT kind of density is desired?

•W HAT type of development can downtown sustain for the next 10 years?

“We’re doing a lot of planning to figure out where we are headed as a city,” said Mary Douglas Hirsch, the city’s real estate development manager. “The new downtown strategic master plan will be a roadmap for the city going forward.”

What saved downtown Greenville was the vision of Heller and people like Buck Mickel, the chairman of Daniel Construction and an industry leader in Greenville and South Carolina, and Tommy Wyche, the lawyer who cobbled together deals that bookended Main Street’s development — deals that would convince the Hyatt to build in a dying downtown in a city usually too small for the national hotel chain to consider and would help turn the banks of the Reedy River in the city’s West End into a gathering place for families, artists, and visitors. What has allowed the success to continue is the commitment to a vision by city officials and community leaders who have followed.

Success, though, hasn’t been easy, and it has come with plenty of controversies.

A key to the transformation was the opening of the Hyatt in 1982. Greenville used a personal connection — the company chairman’s wife was born and raised in Greenville — to get the chain to consider building a hotel in a city that was smaller than those in which the company usually located. ship made it work. The city owned much of the ground floor, considered a city park. By the time the Hyatt opened with three overnight guests during a snowstorm in 1982, inflation had pushed the Greenville Commons project’s price tag from $23 million to $34 million.

“Mixed-use development is likely to be as economically successful or more successful for the developer as single-use development, and will definitely be more successful for Greenville in helping to create a vital and exciting city,” wrote consultant Land Design/Research Inc. The consultants also reminded city and business leaders that change would take time. “Although it is important to have short-term goals for the city, it is also important to remember that the life of a city spans centuries. It is not always wise to expect major changes to occur in five to 10 years, because often rapid change brings with it the danger of making mistakes,” the consultants wrote.

The 1989 plan recommended the city re-examine the design of Piazza Bergamo.

The plaza got a redesign, but not until a few years ago after the $100 million ONE development was completed at North Main and Washington streets, a project the city has called critical in North Main’s redevelopment.

The 1989 study also called the Reedy River and Reedy Falls a “priceless asset” and potentially Greenville’s “single most important tourist attraction.” It recommended the city remove the Camperdown

The city created the West End Market thanks to the donation by Caldwell Harper, who was president of Harper Bros. The city sold West End Market in 2005, saying the West End had turned into a solvent commercial and entertainment district.

Bridge, which obscured the falls, within two years.

When LDR came back to Greenville in 1997, it reported that “great progress has been made in downtown Greenville, but much more needs to be done — the real challenges lay ahead.”

But the report said the goal of removing the Camperdown Bridge was determined no longer valid after a study predicted traffic chaos if the bridge were removed.

That presented a problem. The bridge was blocking Reedy Falls, a key part of a plan to transform Falls Park into downtown’s signature piece. It was hard to sell spending $13 million on the park with public gardens and a pedestrian bridge that centered on the waterfall because few people had ever seen the waterfall.

But White, other city officials, and members of the Foothills Garden Club didn’t give up. Armed with another study that predicted minimal traffic impact, the City Council voted to tear the bridge down. The Liberty Bridge, a suspension bridge that curved away from the falls so as not to take attention away, was built.

“Reclaiming the Reedy River was so important,” White said. “We can see more clearly now when Falls Park opened, everything changed. Suddenly, the city had a significant attraction. It’s hard to imagine

now downtown was once mostly boarded up buildings and dangerous.”

Retail and restaurants have replaced those boarded up buildings, and residential followed. No longer did downtown Greenville go dark after 5 p.m.

The city’s 2008 downtown master plan said that rather than diluting the strong identity of Main Street by extending its length, Greenville should create new districts that have their own geography and history. The districts, each of which lies at a critical gateway to downtown, included Heritage Green, where the library and museums are located; the Gateway District, which includes Interstate 385 and the Bon Secours Wellness Arena; Broad & River; County Square, the county’s headquarters on University Ridge; and the Warehouse District, which includes the West End, the area near the Kroc Center, and the baseball field.

Each of the districts has big projects that are either ongoing or planned. Charleston’s The Beach Company has plans to redevelop the BB&T building across from Heritage Green. In the Gateway District, there are plans to build a hotel on the former Greenville Memorial Auditorium site.

In the Broad & River district, the block of South Main the Greenville News has called home since 1969 is being redeveloped, and there are plans to build a boutique hotel where the Wyche law firm is. Greenville County plans to redevelop County Square, and a slew of multifamily housing has or is being built in the Warehouse District.

Now, the city is looking for a new plan. It received 19 proposals and has narrowed its search down to four consultants, Hirsch said. Interviews will be held this week and the city hopes to select one of the firms by early April. The new plan, which will be compiled with public input, should be completed by the end of the year, she said.

From an urban planning standpoint, the new plan needs to include four basic principles, said Robert Benedict, director of Clemson University’s master of real estate development program.

First, there needs to be continuity of leadership and vision. Second, the city core needs to remain walkable. Third, public-private partnerships need to remain a strong component. And finally, it needs to include successful public transportation.

“Greenville needs to avoid losing its sense of character above all else,” he said.

In addition to identifying where the city needs to prioritize projects, the plan will define downtown’s position in the market, Hirsch said.

“It will look at office, retail, and residential and determine what downtown can sustain for the next 10 years,” she said.

Benedict said the city needs to avoid having a downtown with residential that becomes exclusive and homogenized.

“Mixed-use should also include an affordable housing component. There need to be incentives for developers to ensure that affordable housing is part of large mixed-use developments,” he said, suggesting property tax abatements or reduced fees. “Affordable housing is becoming a bigger and bigger problem.”

White said developing residential downtown was key.

Now, he said, the city needs to focus on diversity in residential in the city’s core. He said Greenville has an opportunity to do that with city-owned land near the city’s new signature park planned in western downtown where the public works department was housed. “I think the importance of moving public works has been understated,” he said. “Maybe it wasn’t as dramatic as removing the Camperdown Bridge, but it will be just as important.”

The new downtown plan will help the city determine appropriate height and density of development for downtown and identify strategic places where height is appropriate.

“Increased density is not a bad thing at all. It’s better than sprawl,” Whtie said. “But it still needs to retain character from a design standpoint that honors our textile heritage, and it needs to be pedestrian-friendly.”

In addition, the plan will identify sites for large mixeduse developments, ensuring their connectivity to the rest of downtown. Now that future projects will have to rely less on public investments because of the end of the TIF districts, the plan will recommend new ideas and approaches to help the city prioritize the investments it can make and to encourage appropriate and desirable private developments.

“So far, we’ve done very well redeveloping downtown,” Benedict said. “I’m more concerned with the neighbor-

hoods. We’ve got some very vulnerable neighborhoods close to downtown. I think Greenville needs to pay special attention to those.”

Benedict said the Ware/McCall neighborhood is a prime example. The neighborhood was cut in two when Academy Street was built and widened. The neighborhood links downtown with the Village of West Greenville, another development hot spot. “The linkage between the Village and downtown, how’s the city going to plan for it?

Preserving that neighborhood would be a good first step.”

In addition to the new downtown master plan, the city is working on a new comprehensive plan, a downtown traffic study, and a Wade Hampton Boulevard master plan, Hirsch said.

“We’re doing a lot of planning to figure out where we’re headed as a city,” she said.

How trees helped transform Greenville into a top travel destination WORDS BY ANDREW MOORE In January, travel and restaurant website TripAdvisor named Greenville a top destination on the rise in the U.S., touting its “thriving arts scene, hundreds of restaurants, shops and boutiques, popular annual festivals, numerous historic sites,” and more.

Greenville, however, wasn’t always so popular. Main Street, which has been named one of the nation’s best by a myriad of publications, was once a four-lane highway with narrow sidewalks and vacant storefronts.

The city, of course, has since redesigned the street into a pedestrian-focused boulevard with wide sidewalks, built one of the country’s most popular downtown parks in Falls Park, and curated one of the state’s strongest retail sectors. This positive change in Greenville, however, wasn’t an accident; rather, it was the result of a small group of leaders with a vision for how to build on one of the city’s most important local assets: trees.

“Main Street didn’t have an identity for the longest time. But then we planted the trees, which added the ambiance we needed to set the stage for the future,” said Nancy Whitworth, deputy city manager and director of economic development for the City of Greenville. “Downtown has changed a lot since then, but the tree canopy continues to be an economic driver for our city. It’s one of our greatest assets.”

It all began in 1975 when the city adopted a $1.4 million plan to revitalize downtown by planting hundreds of trees along Main Street.

Willow oaks were planted at the corners and crosswalks of each street, while red maples were situated in narrow planters along the edge of the sidewalks. The lack of variety, however, left the trees vulnerable to diseases and pests, according to Dale Westermeier, a horticulturist who is the city’s director of parks and grounds.

In 2000, Westermeier noticed that some of the maples were beginning to show signs of decline. It wasn’t long after that the city recruited James Urban, a renowned landscape architect, to assess the health of the trees in downtown.

Westermeier said the trees in downtown have been planted with vertical mulching and air spading. Vertical mulching allows columns of organic matter to be injected into the soil, while the air spade blasts air into the soil to reduce the effects of compaction.

The trees have also been planted with a subsurface system that allows the roots to grow beneath pavement in lightly compacted soil, ensuring the roots receive enough water for the tree to reach its full potential.

In addition to maintaining the trees, the city’s parks and grounds crew also plants about 15,000 annuals throughout downtown every year, Westermeier said. It also cares for more than 30 public parks, including Falls Park and Cleveland Park.

As for the future, Westermeier said the city’s parks and recreation department would spend the next couple of years monitoring downtown’s trees and spraying them with a chemical known as a growth regulator, which encourages the trees to redirect energy normally used for growth to their roots so they will grow deeper and more substantially. “We’re hoping to get another 10 or 15 years out of our oaks,” Westermeier said.

He and his crew also plan to spend the next couple of years expanding the tree restoration and replacement program further down South Main Street and working on major capital improvement projects throughout the city.

The city has set aside $5.4 million for parks and recreation in its proposed capital improvement plan for next year. The plan includes the second $2 million earmark for Phase 2 of the new City Park, which gets $2 million in CIP funds under the proposal.

Located on the west side of downtown, the park is expected to have a great lawn, sprayground water feature, picnic area, basketball courts, and a veterans memorial, among other features. Groundbreaking could be held as early as spring.

Donation from retired Greenville executive breaks record at Clemson University William Sturgis and his wife, Martha Beth Sturgis, are contributing $600,000 to create a distinguished professorship in the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Clemson University. This is the largest donation in the history of the department. Sturgis and his wife have donated to numerous organizations including the Peace Center, First Presbyterian Church, and more. They plan to double their donation for the professorship in their will.

A faculty member selected for the professorship will be able to use funds generated by an endowment to support graduate and undergraduate students as they do research, learn entrepreneurship, and travel to national meetings to present research. Sturgis served as executive vice president of worldwide packaging operations at W.R. Grace and president of its North American Cryovac Division. Sturgis received the Order of the Palmetto in 1997 upon his retirement as well as a commendation from the state House of Representatives. Sturgis said he and his wife established the professorship because they wanted to do something for chemical engineering at Clemson, where he got his start studying under influential professor Charles E. Littlejohn Jr. An announcement on which faculty member will receive the professorship is expected soon.

Most repairs are currently completed in Greenville County due to sponsor and volunteer availability. The agency also serves Pickens, Oconee, and Anderson counties.

The goal is to feed 50 clients for 50 weeks to celebrate 50 years, which will raise a total of $62,500. Rebuild Upstate marks 10th anniversary with 160 repairs, sets goals for 2020

Bob Jones University will host the world-renowned evangelist and broadcaster Dr. Billy (Jan Hwan) Kim and the Korean Children’s Choir on Friday, April 6, at 7 p.m. in Rodeheaver Auditorium.

Kim earned a Bachelor of Arts in Bible (1958) and a Master of Arts in New Testament and theology (1959) from BJU and has honorary degrees from a variety of universities, including Biola University, Belhaven University, Campbell University, Myongji University, Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the Korea Baptist Theological University and Seminary. Kim serves as chairman of Far East Broadcasting Company-Korea (FEBC), a network of 11 radio stations that transmit the Gospel to China, Russia, Japan, and throughout Korea. In 1993, Kim received the highest civilian award for radio broadcasting and media ministries from former South Korean President Roh Tae-woo, recognizing his efforts for improving Korea’s relationship with China and Russia.

The Korean Children’s Choir, whose members range from ages 7 to 13, is a ministry of FEBC-Korea. Directed by Kim, the group has performed at numerous churches, schools, and concert halls throughout the United States and Korea, including Carnegie Hall and the White House. Their BJU performance, which will represent three of FEBC’s five children’s choirs, will feature folk songs and sacred selections.

Rebuild Upstate marks its 10th anniversary with 160 repairs throughout 2017. Over the year, Rebuild Upstate was helped by over 1,400 volunteers who worked on 477 projects in 160 homes in four counties. Rebuild Upstate celebrated its 10th anniversary last fall.

At least five highly-talented and in-demand physician recruits have decided to accept employment elsewhere because of the issues. Others who are early in their careers have let GHS leadership know that their decision to stay in Greenville, or not, will be determined by what happens.

Dr. Paul Randolph Kowalski June 20, 1934 – March 23, 2018 PIEDMONT – Paul

Randolph Kowalski (Randy) of Piedmont, S.C. entered the presence of his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 23, 2018. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Frances Bagwell Kowalski; two children: Kelly Kowalski King (Jeff) of Cornelius, N.C.; Robin Kowalski of Piedmont, S.C.; four grandchildren: Sarah Bagwell King, Caroline Randolph King, Noah Francis Britt, and Jordan Randolph Britt.

A native of Anderson, S.C., Dr. Kowalski received his B.S. degree from Clemson University, his Master of Divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary, and his Doctor of Divinity degree from Presbyterian College.

His love for God and deep faith in Jesus Christ influenced every area of Dr. Kowalski’s life and work. Upon finishing seminary, his first pastorate was at the Pendleton Presbyterian Church in Pendleton, S.C. from 1958 to 1962. He then ministered to the people of the Abbeville Presbyterian Church in Abbeville, S.C. from 1962 until 1967. In 1967, he became the senior pastor at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church in Augusta, GA. where he served for seven years. He spent the last 30 years of his career as the senior minister at First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, S.C. from 1974 until 2004 when he retired.

Throughout his career, Dr. Kowalski provided counsel and advice to many organizations, committees, and partnerships.

He was a trustee of the Rabun Gap Nacoochee School and a former Director at Columbia Theological Seminary, where he served on the Pastor Advisory Board. He was a member of the Board of Visitors at both Presbyterian Home of South Carolina and Presbyterian College, where he was also on the Board

of Trustees. Dr. Kowalski served on the General A s s e m b l y Committee on Theological Education, the Board of Directors at Christ Church Episcopal School, them Advisory Council at Montreat-Anderson College, the Advisory Board at Furman University, the Board of Directors at the Metropolitan YMCA (where he was the Board Member of the Year in 1998), and the Synod of the South Atlantic Council. Dr. Kowalski was also a Trustee of the Outreach Foundation, serving as Vice-Chairman and Chairman in 1991 and 1993, respectively. In 1987, Dr. Kowalski was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow, following his active involvement in the Rotary Club including serving as President in Augusta and Greenville. Because of his allegiance to his alma mater, Kowalski was happy to be recognized as an outstanding graduate of Clemson University in 1988. Upon his retirement from First Presbyterian Church, he received the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian honor in S.C. The funeral service was held March 26, 2018, at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Easley, S.C., with burial in the church cemetery. A memorial service was held on March 31, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church, Greenville, S.C. Made by Hand From furniture to cabinetry and custom carvings, Michael McDunn’s commissions are custom keepsakes

M

ichael McDunn has always liked to make things. As a sixth grader, making Barbie® doll furniture for his sister augured well for his future career. “One day,” he recounts, “I set some of the doll furniture up on our front porch and tried to convince the neighbor girls to buy it.”

McDunn no longer needs to hawk his wares to the neighbors, as he has carved out a successful business designing and crafting furniture at his studio on Rutherford Road. In his small showroom, a mahogany Biedermeier-style desk entices visitors to run a hand over its sensuously smooth surface, while classic Southern rockers crafted of white oak wait to grace any porch. Sawdust scents the air in McDunn’s adjoining studio, where the carcasses of tables, cabinets, and other works in progress lie on benches like patients on operating tables, awaiting the surgeon’s attention.

The Warren, Pennsylvania, native moved to Greenville 43 years ago. Here, he sold his first pieces—small stylized animals—to the gift shop at the Greenville County Museum of Art. Soon after, he added wooden goblets, bowls, and lamps to his repertoire, and eventually nailed down a job as the museum’s resident woodworker.

In 1981, six months after his wife, Alice, gave birth to their first child, McDunn decided to strike out on his own.

“I figured I should do it then, before I chickened out,” he recalls.

He admires the perfect proportions of 18th-century furniture, and admits he has done more antique reproductions than he can count. Left to his own devices, though, McDunn leans toward a more cutting-edge Asian style. His signature pieces include freeform slab tables with tops carved from single pieces of wood.

Although most of his commissions come from the Greenville area, McDunn’s furniture can be found in museums in South Carolina and Georgia, and in homes as far afield as Europe. Pieces can be as small as a wooden trinket box with a marquetry-inlaid lid to an eight-foot-long solid ebony sideboard, one of the most challenging projects he has ever tackled. He once even designed, made, and installed a complete closet lined in blond mappa burl for a client. It took him 1,800 hours to complete.

Attention to detail defines McDunn’s work: the barely rounded edges of his furniture; the mortise and tenon and dovetail joints; the clean, balanced lines; the exquisite parquetry and marquetry inlay.

“There’s a great feeling of satisfaction in creating something with your own hands,” says the modest artisan. “And it’s nice to know that when I finish a piece it may be kept in a family for many generations to come.”

Top Sales Producers at The Cliffs Generate Nearly $30 Million in Real Estate Transactions in 2017 Cliffs Land Partners, the real estate arm of The Cliffs, is pleased to recognize its top real estate producers for 2017, who together achieved $29.3 million in sales from 67 transactions at the luxury mountain and lake club communities in Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina.

The top four producers sold 53 properties totaling $23.6 million, while the top sales support specialist booked 14 tours resulting in $5.7 million in sales. The Cliffs Land Partners celebrated a total of 180 transactions in 2017 totaling $96.2 million.

in 2017, the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) had a record high grants budget of $449,792 for arts organizations, individual artists and arts education programs throughout Greenville County. The Board of Directors and staff are committed to expanding the grants program every year.

In 2014, MAC launched its multi-year, $25 million Endowment for the Arts campaign. The endowment is exclusively for MAC’s grants program to ensure the highest possible level of financial support for the arts throughout Greenville County. As of March, 2018 the endowment had a balance of $1,460,783 in cash and pledges. The endowment balance reached $1 million in 2016.

SmartARTS:

SmartARTS has a presence in 63 schools in Greenville County. Since federal funding expired in 2007, MAC has raised over $2.07 million to continue and expand this arts-integration program that has significantly improved academic achievement in participating schools. In 2016, TD Bank established the TD Bank Center for Arts Integration at MAC with a gift of $200,000.

In 2014, MAC launched MAConnect, its young professionals group. The mission of MAConnect is to further the goals of the MAC by organizing informative events that educate and enlighten the next generation of arts patrons so that Greenville’s cultural amenities will continue to be sustained at the highest level possible. Membership expanded to 165 in 2017.

Greenville Open Studios: The Warehouse Theatre’s production of “Spring Awakening”

Greenville Open Studios 2017 had 145 participating artists with outstanding attendance and record-high sales – 38,638 and $294,060.

Brent Best, aka rapper, producer, and event organizer $amson, started out with relatively conventional musical influences.

“When I was a kid, I was into Michael Jackson, The Beach Boys, and Earth, Wind & Fire because that’s what my father and mother listened to,” he says. “I became attached to that groovy, atmospheric sort of sound.”

But as Best entered his teens, some more unusual inspiration started to take hold. “In middle school, I started listening to a lot of industrial music,” he says.

“Nine Inch Nails, Trivium, things of that nature. And then I started listening to Southern trap music like Gucci Mane. I love the synth work in industrial music, and then the percussion from trap music, I’d never heard anything like that. I’d mash those together in my beats and it worked for me. And I feel like all of those sounds shape my production style.”

That style is a dark blend of intense, hi-hat-fueled, electronic percussion and haunting synthesized backdrops, occasionally punctured by jagged shards of industrial noise. He compares his music to “walking down

a city street at 2 or 3 in the morning, when it’s just stopped raining and no one else is out.”

Lyrically, $amson can make his point in one line or relate it back to prior verses, spinning out double-meanings and puns with a sharp delivery and a dazzling linguistic flow. In that respect, he was directly influenced by the English hip-hopper MF Doom.

“In my opinion, MF Doom is one of the greatest writers in hip-hop,” he says. “The way he layers his ideas, he’ll be talking about one thing in one bar, but if you combine it with what he was saying in the last two bars, it would be a whole mosaic of different things. I’ve always tried to layer those different meanings into my lyrics so that it’s not just face value.”

Best may be one of the most important artists in the Upstate, not just because of his skills behind the mic or the mixing board, but because of the event-booking company he created, called Bad Internet. Bad Internet has created a series of genre-bending, multi-artist shows that combine rock, hip-hop, and various other styles on one stage, like the one featuring DJ Dolla Menu, Truez, Maxx Good$, and Matusa this Saturday at the Radio Room. That disregard for musical boundaries has created an opportunity for Greenville’s various music fans to mix under one banner.

That experimental spirit arose from a DIY attitude that Best has had throughout his career.

“When I first started out, I just wanted to be a rapper,” he says. “But I was trying to find people to make beats for me, and there weren’t too many people who were making beats I was enjoying. So I started producing myself. When it came time to do some shows, I had a manager who wasn’t doing too much for me on that front. So I decided to try it myself. I really started hitting my stride once I started figuring out what the crowd wanted energy-wise. And I thought to myself, ‘What’s missing? What do people want?’ So I just started throwing together things that I thought would fill that pocket, and that’s when everything blew up for me. I’m working on a new album that will be done in the next six or seven months, but right now I’m focusing on bringing people events that will give them a quality experience.”

fore and after hours to complete his gaming project at the time, “Pinstripe.” Brush worked for five years on Pinstripe before it finally hit the market in 2016, with a little help from a friend.

That “friend” is Kickstarter, a crowdfunding platform that Brush heard about in 2015 at an indie gaming festival in San Francisco. This was a time in Brush’s career when he was working a full-time job and working after-hours on Pinstripe.

“I was very overworked,” he says. “I felt kind of hopeless about finishing the game, and then someone told me that they had raised $20,000 on Kickstarter.” Two months later, he launched his own Kickstarter for “Pinstripe” and eventually raised $106,000.

“When the money came in, it’s kind of like a hangover,” Brush says.

“This is what I had been working towards for five years, and suddenly you wake up the next morning and have to get busy because it’s a business now, not a side project.

You have to get it done because people gave you the money.”

Brush explains that Kickstarter was an amazing asset, but that this realization of getting to work was tough with “Pinstripe.”

“Now that I’ve done that, I know I can do it with ‘Once Upon a Coma,’ but I know I can do it way better,” Brush says.

in search of his little sister. It is all about childhoods and rediscovering your identity as a child and perhaps what happens to you when you grow up.” This is indie game designer Thomas Brush’s elevator pitch for his newest game, “Once Upon a Coma.”

Brush has been exploring the world of video games since he was a child growing up in Simpsonville. He started taking it seriously in high school, when his parents gave him a computer and he created his first game, “Coma,” a free game that won numerous awards and accumulated more than 10,000 views.

After attending Clemson University for a degree in graphic communications and landing a job at a marketing firm in Greenville, Brush still found himself working be-

He wants to use the game as a vessel for art and experience. “I just wanted to make a game that was beautiful, with beautiful scenery and artwork,” he says.

Without formal training in any of these design aspects, Brush has worked hard to cultivate these skills. He is a self-taught artist and

composer, though he doesn’t write music in the traditional sense. “I slowly taught myself how to write music. All of the music in my games is composed by me. But I don’t know how to write music. I can plug notes into a computer and make them sound good. And a lot of that is trial and error.”

The art, design, music, and overall mood of the game come first to Brush, and he understands that for it to be successful, he must incorporate elements of traditional games. “It [‘Once Upon a Coma’] takes inspiration from classic games like the ‘Legend of Zelda,’ where there are fetch quests and swordplay and enemies. That is kind of dressing for the meat of my work, which is the story,” Brush explains, “a narrative experience with an atmosphere and a mood.

I always want the player to cry at the end of the game. People said it was an uncanny but beautiful ending.”

Brush has had a long journey into the world of video games, especially for having done it for only 10 years. He has found immense success in his Kickstarter campaigns for “Pinstripe” and “Once Upon a Coma” (which recently raised more than $80,000), and has had personal ups and downs when he felt like quitting. “‘Pinstripe’ had a slow burn of success. It didn’t do as well as I wanted to start. We got some very polarized reviews to start out with. I didn’t know if I wanted to do it again,” Brush says. Eventually, “Pinstripe” went on to earn rave reviews from several prominent media outlets, including The Washington Post and Time magazine.

Brush had to return to his roots to remove some of the stress. Once he took the emphasis off the numbers and money, he rekindled his love of making games and creating a truly unique experience for the player.

Brush has nothing but high hopes for “Once Upon a Coma, and he’s confident it will find success in its own way (and already has via Kickstarter). Brush also hopes for the Greenville digital arts scene to continue to grow. “I would just encourage anyone interested in games to email me, because Greenville doesn’t have a huge community, and I want to make it more prominent and well-known. I’d like Greenville to grow in the digital arts space,” he says. “It can be a lonely business, and I want there to be a community for game creators in Greenville.”

The “Trypnotyx” album is presented as a literal journey, with segments about takeoff, cruising altitude, and landing. Where did that concept come from?

The idea of the journey was always there because that’s what I want my music to do, and that’s what I want my shows to do.

Whenever I ask people what they have in their music library, I’ve never met one person who only has one type of music; everybody has a variety, so I want my record to represent that and actually take you on a journey like a movie or television show.

What’s it like playing with Dennis Chambers?

It’s amazing because his groove is like no other. That’s why everybody wants him in their band. And if he knows you can handle it, he will stretch your limits. If, as a musician, you have really good time, it frees him up to be looser with the time.

He might play in another time signature against yours, forcing you to hold it together. You become his metronome.

Jazz musicians often say that playing in an ensemble is like a conversation; what do you like about the trio format in terms of the musical conversation?

Music is no different whether it’s a big band or small one; you have to be a good listener. With the trio format, you have to speak more, but it doesn’t mean you have to speak a lot; there’s a difference.

I don’t have to play real fast, because there’s more space. That allows the beauty to emerge. There’s a lot of room for each musician to show the listener who we are, but we can also show the beauty of the music.

Since you’re all gifted improvisers, I imagine the live show is much different from the “Trypnotyx” album.

It should be different live. You can listen to the record at home. Live, we want you to have an experience. We want you to feel the music and see how it’s grown and evolved. We change it up each night and have fun with it.

Are you planning to make more albums with the trio?

I don’t know. Everyone is so busy, so I’m not looking ahead to that yet. I do know that there are more recording projects that I definitely hope we do together. Whether it’s a trio record, I don’t know yet. But I know we still have more to do.

Simply put, Victor Wooten is one of the best bass players who has ever picked up the instrument. Whether he’s accompanying Bela Fleck as part of The Flecktones, making stunning one-man-show albums like “A Show of Hands,” or collaborating with an array of artists from Bootsy Collins to Peter Rowan to Stanley Clarke, Wooten’s mastery of his instrument is complete, and he can move from complex jazz to free-flowing funk to heavy rock without batting an eye.

Wooten’s new trio should have any knowledgeable music fan salivating: He’s working with legendary drummer Dennis Chambers (Parliament-Funkadelic, John Scofield, Steely Dan) and saxophonist Bob

Franceschini (Paul Simon, Mike Stern), and their new album, “Trypnotyx,” is a testament to how adventurous a trio can be. The Victor Wooten Trio will be performing April 1 at The Spinning Jenny in Greer, and we spoke with Wooten about his band, his musical approach, and the future of this lineup.

How did this trio come together?

I knew about these two musicians long before I played with them, but the first time I played with them was with a jazz guitarist named Mike Stern.

We were his band, and in playing with Mike I realized how much fun it was to play with these guys. I knew right away I wanted to do something on my own with them. And it took years, but it finally happened.

OPEN BOOK Estuarie’s two complementary EPs are an exploration of personal struggle and doubt The two EPs released last year by the Upstate band Estuarie are simultaneously independent works and inextricably connected. Both EPs, called “Floodgate” and “Polarity,” begin with brief instrumental soundscape pieces, before moving into a series of atmospheric indie-rock songs.

On “Floodgate,” the songs are more subtle and subdued, with blurred guitars, gently pulsing rhythms, and understated synths. “Polarity” takes a more direct approach, picking up the tempo and sharpening the guitars, but there’s still a massivesounding production approach that makes every selection sound like an anthem, even if singer-songwriter Graham Peeples’ lyrics tend to express uncertainty and confusion.

But the similarities aren’t

just superficial. Peeples meant the two EPs to complement each other like chapters of a book, and he took deliberate steps to connect them.

“When we created the first EP, a lot of the songs for the second one were bouncing around on demos,” Peeples says. “So ‘Floodgate’ was Chapter 1 and ‘Polarity’ was Chapter 2, talking about all the things I’ve experienced in the last few years.”

But the two releases are connected in a more literal sense.

“The opening track of ‘Floodgate,’ ‘10.6,’ has elements from every song on the rest of the album,” Peeples says. “Then, coming out of ‘Rain for You’ (the last track on ‘Floodgate’), it ends with the same chord progression that opens ‘Incandescent,’ the first track on ‘Polarity.’ Then at the end of ‘Polarity,’ we loop back around to the motif from ‘10.6,’ the original song that started everything. I wanted it all to be seamless.”

As for the band’s moody, swirling sound, Peeples says that was a conscious decision as well, something to set them apart from the glut of indie-rock guitar bands on the music scene.

“I wanted something to differentiate us a little bit,” he says. “It’s the surrounding elements, the keyboards, the things we’ll throw behind the songs, that makes every-

thing sound wider. That atmosphere adds another dimension to the mix of the songs sonically and emotionally. It helps drive the points home.”

Estuarie, who will play April 5 at the Radio Room in Greenville with Alarm Drum and The Wormholes, started in December 2016 as the name of a solo project that Peeples was working on in a less direct rock ‘n’ roll vein, but after adding drummer Nick Ilderton (who left the group after “Polarity” was released), it became the band’s name and the calling card for a heavier sound.

“Once I started working with other people, we kind of kept pushing in a fuller direction,” he says. “We moved more towards an indie-rock direction with an ambient vibe.”

Lyrically, Peeples is essentially an open book, expressing insecurity, frustration, and depression.

The lines from “Chicago,” off “Polarity,” perhaps best express the feelings of this 19-year-old musician: “I’m just a wornout kid who’s tired of hearing / The wornout s— they keep trying to feed me.”

Peeples says he means to express a larger message through his own personal doubts.

“I think there are a lot of people dying to grab hold of something, and music has been that for me,” he says. “It’s been something to believe in, and it’s been there for me. And I want to provide an outlet like that for other people. There’s not a ton of that out there at the moment; there’s not a whole lot of room for mental health awareness, and for learning how to handle depression and anxiety and move past them. I want people to feel more at ease with it, even if it’s just through 12 songs from a 19-year-old.”

MAC CELEBRATES RECORD-HIGH GRANTS BUDGET, OTHER MILESTONES AT ANNUAL MEETING SARA PEARCE | STAFF

On Monday, March 26, the Metropolitan Arts Council honored several individuals and businesses for their support for the arts in the 2017 TD Bank Business and The Arts Partnership Awards at the MAC Annual Meeting.

MAC had its best year in a 44-year-long history of supporting the arts in Greenville. The organizational budget surpassed $2 million for the fourth consecutive year, which includes both in-kind donations and gifts to the Endowment for the Arts. Additionally, MAC had a record-high grants budget of $449,792 for arts organizations, individual artists, and arts education programs throughout Greenville County.

The awards ceremony recognized several of MAC’s successes this year, including MAC Endowment for the Arts, SmartARTS, MACConnect, and Greenville Open Studios.

Five primary awards were presented as well as several other individuals and businesses that were recognized for their contributions to the arts.

SmartARTS Teaching Artist Award Shane Bryant has been a ceramic artist since 1993. He founded the William Felton School of Crafts in 2004 and has taught classes through Furman University over the years, as well as the Spartanburg Museum of Art, where he was the pottery studio manager. Bryant served as a board member for Upstate Visual Arts and Greenville’s First Fridays and has been listed on the South Carolina Arts Commission Artist Roster since 2000. He has been an artist-inresidence for several schools over the years.

Additionally, Bryant has been a teaching artist for MAC’s SmartARTS program since 2004 and is a regular participant in MAC’s Greenville Open Studios program.

Visionary Award Holly Caprell has been the executive director of the Greenville County Youth Orchestras (GCYO) since 2007, an organization that has been educating young musicians for over 40 years. GCYO has a mission to impact the lives of Greenville’s youth through music and providing a quality orchestral program that develops and educates young musicians. During Caprell’s tenure, GCYO has expanded its programs and offerings greatly, as well as its awareness of the Greenville community.

Caprell is a graduate of Converse Col-

lege, where she earned a degree in psychology and minored in music performance and accounting. She is currently the voice teacher at Southside Christian High School and teaches private lessons.

Lifelong Support for the Arts Award Genevieve Sakas Manly has been an artist throughout her life, as well as a supporter of the arts. Manly developed a passion for dance at a young age and continued to follow that path when she studied ballet in New York at the School of American Ballet. Manly and her husband, John, formed a dance act after their wedding and toured around the country to open for artists including Sammy Davis Jr., Bob Hope, and Frank Sinatra.

The couple returned to Greenville in 1972, where they became involved in planning for the South Carolina Governor’s School of the Arts and Humanities. They contributed funding to build the 300-seat Sakas Black Box Theatre inside the John and Genevieve Sakas Center for Drama.

Manly has been a longtime board member and additionally created the Sakas Endowment to fund costume purchases and repair.

She has also been a longtime supporter of the Peace Center, where the restaurant is named in her honor. As a member of the Peace family, she has always supported and believed in the Greenville arts community.

Blair Commitment to Arts and Education Award Traysie Amick has been a teacher for most of her life and imparted her talent and passion for theater to thousands of youth throughout the Upstate. For almost 20 years, she has been the principal teaching artist at the South Carolina Children’s Theatre, where she has also acted and directed.

She has played an integral role in developing theater curriculum for SCCT programs such as Know Way, Second Stage, and Wee Play Theatre. She earned a B.A. in theater from Winthrop University. Amick designed a children’s theater program for Rock Hill Community Theatre, as it is close to Winthrop. She is also an alumnus of the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities and has graced many theaters around the Upstate with her presence through her career.

WHAT’S COOKIN’ DOC? The Cooking Doc Blake Shusterman wants to help you enjoy healthy food WORDS BY ARIEL TURNER

Dr. Blake Shusterman, aka The Cooking Doc, wants to change your buds. Your taste buds, that is.

“People around here just need a lot of help knowing what healthy eating is and how to do it,” he says.

A member of the Carolina Nephrology practice, Shusterman promotes #ChangeYourBuds on his monthly “The Cooking Doc” YouTube cooking videos designed to help people learn to not just tolerate, but enjoy healthy food, maybe even more than the unhealthy food they currently crave.

What started five years ago as a fun and practical way for Carolina Nephrology to help their patients’ necessary diet changes be less difficult has evolved into an educational resource for anyone interested in changing their diets.

“People who have kidney disease have a very specific diet, especially if they’re on dialysis, so the idea was to make a cooking show that was kind of tailored to them,” Shusterman says. “The beginning of last year I kind of wanted to broaden it out to healthy eating in general.”

Now, rather than focusing just on kidney health, which often means lower fat or sodium diets, he’s gearing his videos to be about healthy eating for a much broader audience of people interested in changing their diets without sacrificing flavor or enjoyment.

“One of the things I’ve tried to push in my cooking is ‘change your buds,’ so you go from shrimp and grits or fried vegetables or fried chicken and kinda change the way your taste buds enjoy food to the more baked foods or learn to kind of make flavors that you like in a different way, but it takes time,” he says.

Shusterman and his film crew and marketing team, PECULIAR, set up shop in his Augusta Road-area home once a month, and over the course of an afternoon, they film him cooking between one to four recipes.

Some of the segments focus on healthier versions of a typically unhealthy dish, such as fettuccini alfredo, substituting cauliflower for the heavy cream, or buffalo chicken dip made with lowfat cream cheese and tofu. Other times, the recipes are naturally low-fat and low-sodium dishes, such as baked fish or salads. But, most of the time, they are all vegetable-heavy, and rather than relying on excessive salt for flavor, Shusterman tries to use interesting ingredients, herbs, and spices that may expand the palate of his viewers.

The result is essentially like having a doctor in the kitchen with you while you’re cooking, he says, helping to guide your decisions, and in many cases, introducing new ingredients or preparation methods that will promote good health rather than contribute to physical problems.

“More and more doctors will start doing things like this,” Shusterman says.

He encourages his viewers to embrace whole grains, a variety of vegetables, fish, limited meat and dairy, and

minimal sugar. And his advice extends beyond cooking at home to making choices when dining out.

“Every restaurant makes their shrimp and grits, but they don’t focus on a good healthy option,” he says, citing one of the most common dishes on local restaurant menus.

But, he says, there are healthy options on menus if diners know what to look for. One good starting point is finding out which restaurants source their ingredients from farms in the area, which should mean a higher quality and more nutrientrich produce than items shipped from South America, for instance.

“Locally sourced is very important, and Greenville is starting to do that,” he says.

Portion size is another factor.

Often, restaurant portions are much larger than someone should eat in one sitting, Shusterman says.

“Sometimes people go out to dinner or lunch and they think, ‘Oh man, I’ve gotta get the bang for my buck. I’ve gotta eat everything on my plate because I’m spending $7 on a meal,’ but if you split it, you get two meals,” he says.

For those who miss the visceral aggression and release of a Rage Against The Machine concert, there’s a band out there that knows how you feel, and they’re going to give you everything from “Killing In the Name” to “Bulls on Parade” to “Renegades of Funk” at The Firmament on Friday.

Enrage Against The Machine came together out of love for one of the most popular, and revolutionary, bands of its era. “We’re all that age where we were teenagers when the first album came out,” says Enrage bassist Carsten Christgau, “and it had a huge influence on me.

That sound was just amazing, along with the message behind it and the rawness of it. Then later when I started playing bass, that first album was basically how I learned to play, was by figuring out their songs.”

Replicating the energy of such a fierce band might sound like a challenge, but Christgau says the quartet feeds off their audience. “It’s crazy,” he says. “We’re trying to bring across that high energy and going wild onstage. Andrew Thelston Band

Andrew Thelston’s self-titled album, released toward the end of 2017, is an eight-song collection of guitar-heavy rock that takes in late 1960s psychedelia, blues-influenced solos, and occasional nods to acoustic folk, all tied together by Thelston’s earnest, emotional vocals. It’s a cohesive effort from start to finish, and it’s also the work of one person; Thelston played everything from the drums on up, taking around 11 months to create it.

“When I started working on it at the tail end of 2016, it was just me going in and putting some demos together at the studio I started with my friend Daniel,” he says. “It kind of progressed from there.”

Thelston says he drew inspiration from a couple of hugely successful one-man-band projects from the 1970s and ‘80s. “I’m a huge Prince and Paul McCartney fan, and they did that throughout their careers,” he says. “I’m primarily a guitar player and singer, but I’ve been playing bass and drums since I was 16. So I decided to try to push myself and go that extra mile.” –Vincent Harris

If you’re a fan of vintage 1970s music by the Marshall Tucker Band, the Allman Brothers Band, or Charlie Daniels, you’ll probably find a lot to like in “American Son,” the newest album by the Texas quartet The Scooter Brown Band. Every track is drenched in Southern rock power with a bit of country twang thrown in for good measure. The “rock” part might come as a surprise to anyone who’s heard their previous albums, which were collections of relatively straightforward popcountry.

“What we’re doing now, that’s where my heart lies musically,” says singer/guitarist Scott Brown. “I think when we first started we were a lot more in the country genre, but I’ve always loved ’60s and ’70s Southern rock. It’s fun to play because you’re not pigeonholing it into a three-and-a-half-minute song that has to fit on the radio. You’re just playing music. It’s like a lost art form.”

Brown is a former Marine who saw combat in Iraq, so the hardships of life on the road in a rock band don’t phase him at all. “This is gravy, man,” he says with a laugh. “I wake up every morning and pinch myself and say, ‘Is this really what I do for a living?’” –Vincent Harris typically would not have an opportunity to enjoy a night of theater.
