Keep the Bank Open

The SC Conservation Bank must be reauthorized

By Bruce Bannister and Ross Turner South Carolina is experiencing rapid growth and change. Our population is increasing at the astonishing rate of 104 people every day and will soon exceed 5 million. People are staying here and moving here because of our smiling faces and beautiful places.

One of the great challenges we face is how to keep our state unique and attractive in the face of such growth. One of the best tools for achieving this goal is the S.C. Conservation Bank.

In 2002, the General Assembly established the Conservation Bank, which is funded by a portion of the state’s share of the deed recording fee, which is paid every time land is sold in South Carolina. It’s an eminently sensible policy that uses funds collected when land is sold (often for development) to protect other lands in the state. No tax dollars

are used.

A board of volunteer South Carolina citizens reviews applications from land trust organizations, state agencies, and local governments for grants that are used to acquire either title to, or a conservation easement on, properties with conservation and/or historic significance. The program is totally voluntary; the owners of the properties decide if they want to participate.

The Conservation Bank will go out of business on June 30, 2018, unless reauthorized by the General Assembly. That would be a tragedy for our state.

The Bank has been remarkably successful. In 15 years, it has protected nearly 300,000 acres of farms, forests, wetlands, historic sites, urban parks, and other special places across South Carolina at an average cost of only $520 per acre.

In the Upstate alone, projects fund-

ed by the Conservation Bank include Stumphouse Mountain, Nine Times Preserve, and the historic Blythe-GodwinHagood House, as well as expansions of Paris Mountain State Park, Jones Gap State Park, and Lake Conestee Nature Park. The bank has also protected some of the spectacular scenic vistas along Highway 11.

None of these popular projects — and many others across South Carolina — would have happened without the Conservation Bank.

Many other special places are at risk, and without the Conservation Bank the chances of losing them greatly increase.

Tourism is South Carolina’s No. 1 industry as people come here in droves to admire, use, and enjoy our extraordinary natural and historic resources. A study by the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business determined that natural resources provide $29 billion in economic benefits to our state each year and support 236,000 jobs.

Thus, conservation is inextricably linked to our state’s economic well-being.

The Conservation Bank’s success record is all the more remarkable when you consider the obstacles it has faced over the last 15 years, including caps on funding, diversion of funding, and the “death clause,” which provides that whenever half or more of other state agency budgets are cut, the bank receives zero funding. No other state agency is subject to such a restriction. The death clause was invoked during the Great Recession, but the General Assembly did provide a little funding to keep the lights on and the two bank staff employed.

The Conservation Bank program was the subject of a recent review by the S.C. Legislative Audit Council. The report identifies some weaknesses in how the program is administered, but we are pleased that the Conservation Bank Board is already taking steps to address them. In addition, the report offers recommendations on amendments to the

law, such as diverting a certain percentage of the bank’s funds to the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) or even merging the bank into DNR. These recommendations, in our view, are not appropriate for an audit report and should not distract attention from the urgent need to reauthorize the program as quickly as possible.

A new nonprofit organization, the Palmetto Land and Water Legacy Alliance, has been established with the sole mission of reauthorizing the Conservation Bank. Business, conservation, and community leaders across the state have come together to join and support the alliance. IN THEIR BACKYARD Thirty years ago, North Main residents predicted that GATEWAY HOUSE would doom their neighborhood.

It didn’t. Instead, it has saved lives.

Mike Wnuk was a child when his parents joined a protest that turned out to be a defining moment in their lives. Partly to protect their only child, they objected to Gateway House’s plans to renovate a condemned apartment building on West Earle Street and turn it into permanent housing for people with mental illness.

It was 1985, and hundreds of North Main homeowners fought the change, citing safety concerns and the prospect of falling property values. The historic neighborhood raised enough money to fight the nonprofit for more than a year.

Earle Street in those days had brushes with violence. One homeless man was found dead in a backyard, and another was badly beaten up. Residents didn’t feel safe to walk alone at night or leave their doors unlocked, and many people in the early 1980s were not familiar with mental illness and feared the worst, says Bogdan Wnuk, Mike’s father.

“People react irrationally when it comes to things they’re not familiar with, and our reaction was negative at first,” the elder Wnuk says. “Mike was 12 years old, and for us, as a family, mental illness was foreign.”

What the Wnuk family and their neighbors could not have foreseen was that less than a decade after the historic street’s zoning battle ended in 1986 with the Gateway House winning, Mike Wnuk — their own son — would become a tenant of the very apartments his

community had opposed.

“I was a loner as a kid and felt like an outsider,” Mike Wnuk says. “The first time I fit in was at Gateway House.”

TIME TO EXPAND

Fast-forward three decades, and there have been no protests over the organization’s latest expansion plans.

Gateway House has helped hundreds of local people with persistent, lifelong mental illness. The North Main community has grown more accepting of the organization’s Rutherford Street clubhouse and its 72 apartments scattered throughout the area.

So when Gateway House held a recent neighborhood meeting to discuss plans to double its clubhouse space and build a little closer to residential homes, only two homeowners attended, says Phil Emory, who has been executive director of Gateway House since it opened. Emory plans to retire this year.

The organization serves 100 people each day, and its current 10,000-squarefoot space limits potential.

a two-story building of up to 20,000 square feet, says Fred Carpenter, chairman of the board and a member of the board of directors of Clubhouse International in New York City.

“We are what is referred to as a Clubhouse Model program. It’s an international term, and we’re one of 350 programs that exist in 35 countries around the world,” Carpenter says. “What we basically do is psychosocial rehabilitation.”

Gateway House’s members have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and major depression.

“Most of our folks come through our program and attain a more meaningful life,” Carpenter says. “They have a sense of support and a peer group and hope for a future and meaningful life.”

Some are able to work or return to school after going through the program. And because of its success, Gateway House trains people from around the world in the Clubhouse Model. Gateway House also helps other Clubhouse Model programs start. This

includes new ones being built in Greenwood, Rock Hill, Clemson, and on the South Carolina coast, Carpenter says.

‘THEY KNEW OUR MEMBERS WERE AXE MURDERERS’

Gateway built a house at Earle and Rutherford to serve as a guesthouse for people who travel to Greenville to learn from Gateway staff and members. The organization has trained people from 40 states and more than 15 different countries, says Sally Bissada Lassiter, a staff member.

The organization’s roots were humble.

In 1984, the Gateway House started its Clubhouse Model from a small room at Earle Street Baptist Church. The organization grew quickly and bought property on Rutherford to create a permanent space for its members’ daily activities and meals.

There also was a need for more affordable and private housing for members, so the board received donations to buy a 12-unit apartment building on West Earle Street, Emory says.

Emory was asked to speak at Earle Street Baptist Church about the apartment plans. Pulling up to the church, he recalls being amazed to see so many cars lined up the street.

His talk quickly grew heated.

“There was an angry mob of people who threatened me and threatened to burn down Gateway House and the apartment buildSally Bissada Lassiter ing,” Emory recalls. “I tried to educate them, but they didn’t want to hear anything I had to say. They heard about schizophrenics and knew our members were axe murderers.”

Fear and stereotypes of people with mental illness fueled the verbal assaults.

“One person said, ‘If you rent an apartment to one of your members and that person walks by my house, I’ll wet them with the water hose,’” Emory says. “As I was leaving the meeting, a person said, ‘I wouldn’t be surprised if someone found you in a ditch with a knife in your back.’”

Thankfully, it never came to water hoses or violence. The neighborhood hired lawyers to sue the nonprofit. They lost each court battle until it ended with the S.C. Court of Appeals ruling in favor of Gateway House, Emory says.

FULL CIRCLE

Emory put the ugly fight behind him until a half dozen years later when a woman visited the clubhouse and introduced herself to him. “She said, ‘Mr. Emory, I hope you don’t remember me,’” he recalls.

Then she confided that she was one of the Earle Street

neighbors who had fought him in court, and now she had regrets, telling him, “Our son has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Can you help us?”

Emory did help her son, Mike Wnuk, who had dropped out of Spartanburg Methodist College after having problems with depression and anger.

Wnuk became a clubhouse member and moved into the Earle Street apartments, not knowing until then about the apartments’ history and his own family’s part in it. His parents sold their Earle Street house in 2014 and moved to Florida, but he’s stayed in Greenville because of Gateway House.

He’s also become an ambassador for the program, speaking

about Gateway House and the Clubhouse Model around the world.

“I thought it was an incredible story about how there’s stigma about mental illness, but then people come around and see how they’re wrong,” Wnuk says. “Life is funny sometimes.

My parents never knew this would happen to us.”

Wnuk, whose diagnosis was later revised to bipolar disorder, has walked down his childhood street daily for more than 20 years, and no one has ever threatened him with a water hose, he says. “When I walk on Earle Street, people recognize me and say, ‘Hey, Mike, how are your parents? Are they still in Florida?’”

30-PLUS YEARS OF NEIGHBORHOOD ACTION

Residents of area hired attorneys to stop Gateway House from turning a rundown apartment building into a home for people with mental illness. Gateway House won the court battle, and their members still live on Earle Street.

Earle Street residents hired a lawyer to oppose the purchase of a house for the purpose of providing a group home for people infected with HIV/AIDS. The legal challenge failed, and the home remains on Earle.

The historic street’s neighbors fought zoning code changes that made it possible for a 24-hour Waffle House to open on East Stone Avenue, backing up to East Earle homes.

The Waffle House has been a neighborhood mainstay for the past six years.

Residents of historic neighborhoods on either side of East Stone Avenue object to a bail bond business moving to East Stone Avenue. Zoning will allow that usage. Some North Main residents also have challenged the Salvation Army’s renovation on Rutherford Street.

M

odern Greenville has a history of bold ideas and even bolder solutions.

When Greenville leaders were trying to lure the Hyatt to Main Street to help give a dying downtown life in the 1970s, it took a bold idea to seal the deal.

Under a complicated public-private financial partnership, the city owned the hotel atrium, ballroom, and kitchen, which were considered a city park. The city sold its interest in the hotel for $1 million in 2010.

In the early 2000s, an equally bold idea was proposed to build new Greenville County schools. At the time, many schools were ailing; some had to put out trashcans to catch the dripping water from leaky roofs every time it rained, while others used so many portable classrooms, their campuses looked like Army barracks. The building needs were so many that it was likely the district would never catch up. Then developer Bob Hughes and Institutional Resources came up with a financing plan that was akin to a home mortgage. Under the plan, the district would set up a nonprofit organization to sell bonds to pay for the projects and build equity in the schools as the $1 billion debt was paid down. Seventy schools were built, added to, or renovated.

Today, Greenville is faced with a similar challenge, with two bold proposals being floated to address two problems. One is a pitch to deal with the lack of parking in Cleveland Park, while the other is a pitch to demolish the Church Street bridge, a significant thoroughfare leading into downtown, in order to improve traffic.

CLEVELAND PARK’S PARKING CRUNCH In Greenville’s Cleveland Park, parking is a zoo. Really.

On nice weekend days — even those without a special event — finding a parking spot in one of Cleveland Park’s parking lots can feel like winning the lottery. It doesn’t help that a parking lot near the softball field has been closed since a part of it was washed out about two years ago.

When the parking lots are full, park visitors try to find a space anywhere they can, lining the streets that wind through and around the park and turning one of the park’s meadows into a temporary parking lot. Last year, the latter prompted complaints and an online petition by nearby residents to keep cars off the meadow.

Now, residents of the Cleveland Forest neighborhood are asking the Greenville City Council to pay for a master plan and parking study for the park. Neighborhood residents are concerned the problem will only become worse when part of the parking lot off Cleveland Park Drive will be used as a construction staging area once Renewable Water Resources begins a nearly three-year project to dig a 1.3-mile sewer line tunnel from Cleveland Park to Hudson Street, near where the new City Park will be built.

“Cleveland Park has been sort of neglected as the rest of the parks get developed,” said Jay Anthony, president of the Cleveland Park Neighborhood Association. “We want to make sure Cleveland Park doesn’t get left behind. The biggest issue is Cleveland Park has gotten overwhelmed.”

Mayor Knox White said he hopes the new City Park will take

some pressure off Cleveland Park.

“Cleveland Park is completely full on weekends. We need to give people another place to go,” he said.

But Scott Powell, the former president of the neighborhood association, said he doesn’t think City Park will provide much relief to visitor-choked Cleveland Park.

“There are a bazillion condos being built,” he said. “Falls Park hasn’t helped reduce crowds in Cleveland Park. In fact, it probably has added to it. And more people are moving to Greenville. Downtown is a big draw.”

The neighborhood association was formed in 2011 to fight a developer’s proposal to build apartments on the Cleveland Park Stables site on Woodland Way across from the where the city’s dog park used to be.

The Greenville Zoo attracts more than 300,000 visitors a year and has plans to add a new tiger exhibit, among other improvements. In addition, the Swamp Rabbit Trail has increased park visitors, too.

Anthony, who said neighborhood residents love having the zoo in the park, said it might be time for Cleveland Park to get an overall redesign, perhaps pushing the entire parking out to its edges and closing the roads that traverse its interior.

“Planners should consider ways to pull the parking to the perimeter of the park. If this were done, the roads through the park could be closed on the weekends, like Central Park,” Anthony said.

City officials have said providing parking relief is one reason they’ve pushed for expansion of the city’s trolley system to Cleveland Park and the Greenville Zoo. But Powell said having remote parking for the zoo is not a good option.

field Baptist Church and the back of the zoo is unobstructed. With an agreement with the church for weekdays and Saturdays, the rail bed could be turned into a “train” route to the zoo.

“Kids are fascinated by trains. It would be a draw to encourage parents to park off-site,” he said.

Anthony said, “There’s a creative solution out there.”

In addition, the neighborhood association said it’s time the city does something with the stables property, which was bought by Jill Cox, the widow of former Daniel Construction president Charles Cox, and donated to the city in 2012.

“We’re disappointed that it has been allowed to sit dormant for years,” Anthony said.

Powell said the property could be made into an active park that connects to the Swamp Rabbit Trail and the YMCA.

THE DEMOLITION OF CHURCH STREET BRIDGE State Sen. William Timmons has asked the S.C. Department of Transportation to consider removing the Church Street bridge permanently.

The bridge had been slated for rehabilitation in April, but the project has been delayed because bids came back higher than expected.

The City of Greenville is also pushing for the state to install a protected bicycle and pedestrian lane to replace the bridge’s little-used sidewalks.

“We’re evaluating the city’s request to accommodate a protected bike/pedestrian lane on the Church Street bridge,” said Jonathan Chasteen, a program manager in the DOT’s Greenville office. “We have not evaluated Sen. Timmon’s inquiry at this point, as we are still evaluating whether we can accommodate the city’s request utilizing the existing bridge structure.”

It wouldn’t be the first time a vehicular bridge was removed in downtown Greenville — and this isn’t the first time the idea of demolishing the Church Street bridge has been discussed.

To make room for Falls Park and the Liberty Bridge, the four-lane Camperdown bridge built in 1960 was torn down in 2002. People wondered why anybody would want to tear down a perfectly good bridge, a bridge that obscured Reedy Falls but also hid the river that could change colors depending on which dye nearby textile plants were using. Opponents predicted traffic gridlock. It never came.

Greenville City Councilwoman Gaye Sprague, who is a traffic engineer, has heard the pitch to destroy Church Street bridge before. “It would definitely take some study to see how the at-grade intersections would work,” Sprague said. “The cost would be high, but it’s expensive to maintain a bridge as big as it is, too.”

The Church Street bridge was built in 1959, when vehicular traffic was king and providing a corridor for a growing commuter population was a top priority. Church Street was extended, cutting through the Camperdown Mill Village. “They would never put the bridge there today,” said Greenville Mayor Knox White.

But they did.

Today the street runs from Wade Hampton Boulevard to Mills Avenue.

In 2015, Church Street from Augusta to Broad streets handled a daily average of 26,300 vehicles. The stretch from Broad Street to Beattie Place handled 25,000 cars. At rush hour, vehicles back up on the bridge as drivers wait their turns to get through a series of red lights on their way to work or back home.

Sen. Timmons has asked the DOT for cost estimates for rehabbing the bridge, replacing it, and permanently removing the bridge and turning Church Street into a surface-level street.

According to Timmons, the SCDOT said “it was a narrow call whether to rehab or replace the bridge.”

The freshman senator added, “I’ve floated the idea of removing the bridge to some people, and I haven’t heard a single person who wasn’t for it.”

Removing a grade-separated highway (Church Street is also U.S. 29) in the middle of a downtown isn’t a new concept. Rochester, N.Y., just finished converting a part of its Inner Loop highway into a surface street, and freeways and highways have been removed in Portland, Ore.; San Francisco; Boston; Seoul; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Milwaukee; and Trenton, N.J. While it may seem counterintuitive to take down a bridge and highway that handles much of the traffic flowing into downtown, some cities have found that doing so actually results in less congestion and safer streets, with traffic adapting to the loss of the bridge and drivers spreading out to other roads.

“Downtown planners like to have connections,” Sprague said. “The Church Street bridge, in essence, is a disconnect.”

The cost of removing the bridge would fall somewhere in between the cost of rehabbing it and replacing it, Timmons said. SCDOT officials have said building a new bridge could cost $50 million.

The City of Greenville has floated a proposal of its own: constructing a protected bike and pedestrian path on the Church Street bridge. The city says a protected lane could be built without reducing the number of vehicular traffic lanes if the sidewalks that currently line the bridge are removed. The sidewalks are rarely, if ever, used.

Now that the bridge renovation is delayed, SCDOT has time to further study the city’s request.

Mayor White said he was pleased to have removal of the bridge on the table, but a traffic study would have to be conducted.

THE FAB FIVE … PROJECTS ON THE HORIZON THE BIG DIG

Beginning next year, Renewable Water Resources will begin digging a 1.3-mile long, 100-foot deep tunnel under downtown Greenville. The 10-foot diameter tunnel will go through granite from Cleveland Park near the Greenville Zoo to Hudson Street near the new proposed City Park.

Once boring starts, it will take about a year to finish the tunnel, and that’s with laborers working 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The new sewer line will serve the Reedy River basin from downtown Greenville to Travelers Rest and should provide capacity for the next 100 years.

TROLLEYS

When the plan was first proposed to place a downtown baseball stadium on an abandoned lumberyard in the West End, critics pounced. There’s nowhere to park, they said. How about County Square, supporters countered? It’s too far to walk, critics replied. The solution: The future tenants of that baseball stadium, the Greenville Drive, bought trolleys to shuttle fans back and forth from County Square and Fluor Field. On non-game days, the trolleys now run up and down Main Street and have be-

come a means of transportation for downtown visitors as well as an attraction in and of themselves. Now, the City of Greenville and Greenlink have taken over trolley operations and are looking to expand service to get visitors to the Village of West Greenville, Augusta Street, and Cleveland Park.

COUNTY SQUARE

Once the old Bell Tower Mall shopping center, County Square has been Greenville County’s base of operations since 1987. But the county is seeking proposals for the redevelopment of the old mall and two office buildings with parking lots across the street totaling nearly 38 acres. The redevelopment could be the largest in the history of downtown. The county wants a 250,000-squarefoot office building to house its operations and a 1,000-space parking garage on the site; the rest is more or less up for grabs.

Proposals are due April 6.

CITY PARK

Looking back, there’s no denying it: Falls Park saved the West End. Within two years of Falls Park opening, $150 million in private investment was made and, just like that, an area that had once been neglected came alive. The city hopes its new City Park

will have a similar affect on the Southernside and West Greenville neighborhoods.

Because the City of Greenville owns property along the park’s border, city officials will have greater control over the type of residential development that follows. The city has said the area will be ideal for affordable housing.

SWAMP RABBIT TRAIL EXTENSION

Hundreds of thousands of people each year flock to the Greenville Hospital System Swamp Rabbit Trail, a hugely popular walking and bicycling trail built on abandoned railroad beds from downtown Greenville to Travelers Rest; since then, the trail has expanded outward. Construction on the latest extension — from Cleveland Park to the Verdae development off the Motor Mile — will likely feature bridges over Laurens and Haywood roads, and, perhaps, Verdae Boulevard, if the trail make it to the Clemson University-International Center for Automotive Research. Construction is scheduled to start in January. The exact route has yet to be determined, but the trail is expected to cross Laurens somewhere near Washington Street. —Cindy Landrum

Lawmakers introduce 10 bills to fight growing opioid epidemic Greenville’s Phyllis Henderson and Eric Bedingfield are among a group of Republican state representatives who have introduced 10 pieces of legislation to curb South Carolina’s growing opioid and heroin epidemic.

The group had spent months studying the issue and discussing various aspects of the bills. “It’s been a real team effort here and we want input from everyone. I really Phyllis Henderson wanted to work on our prescription drug monitoring program in South Carolina, so we all started the conversation about how to improve it,” Henderson said.

One bill would require doctors to participate in a prescription drug database that would monitor how many opioid medications their patients were prescribed by other physicians, according to Henderson. The state already has a prescription drug tracking system, but only requires physicians in the Medicaid program to participate.

Another bill would require health care professionals to notify the Department of Social Services when a fetus is exposed to alcohol or controlled substances in the womb.

“As this bill makes its way to the Senate, it is my hope that the reform and funding components included in this legislation will be seriously considered and a long-term, sustainable solution is quickly agreed upon,” he added.

State Reps. Bruce Bannister, Chandra Dillard, Dwight Loftis, Leola Robinson-Simpson, and Phyllis Henderson were the Greenville representatives to vote for the bill. Reps. Jason Elliott, Mike Burns, Gary Smith, William Chumley, and Eric Bedingfield voted against the tax increase. Reps. Tommy Stringer and Mark Willis didn’t cast a vote.

The S.C. House of Representatives has approved a bill that would increase the state’s gas tax and create several driving fees in order to raise about $600 million annually for road and bridge repairs across the state.

The bill, H. 3516, would increase the state’s gas tax by 2 cents a year for the next five years and increase the cap on the vehicle sales tax from $300 to $500 and add $60 or $120 fees for hybrid and electric vehicles every two years. It will also create a motor carrier road user fee for out-of-state truckers, and reform governance of the state Department of Transportation’s Highway Commission.

City Engineering Services Manager Dwayne Cooper said the city will “try to move heaven and earth” to get the PNG Connector open by the holiday season.

When the half-mile, two-lane connector opens, it will give motorists a way to get to popular destinations on Woodruff Road without having to get on the traffic-choked road itself.

The epidemic hits close to home for Bedingfield. Last year, his 26-year-old son Josh died after overdosing on fentanyl, a synthetic opioid up to 100 times stronger than morphine.

SC House approves gas tax increase to fund road repairs

The partnership between Upstate Forever and Keith is part of an effort to improve water quality in the Tyger River Basin, which the state has designated as “impaired,” according to Upstate Forever officials.

“South Carolina’s roads and bridges are crumbling, and the House took an important first step today to solve this safety and economic development crisis. It is evident to everyone that we have to fix our roads,” Elliott said in a statement.

According to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, opioid-related deaths across South Carolina increased from 237 in 2013 to 516 in 2014. In 2015, 550 South Carolinians died of heroin and opioid abuse, according to Greenville County Deputy Coroner Jeff Fowler. The deaths almost rival those from car crashes in South Carolina. In 2015, 637 people died in vehicle crashes in the state.

Upstate Forever protects 300 acres A former tree farm in Pauline is now protected through a partnership between Upstate Forever and a Spartanburg County landowner.

The Greenville-based nonprofit has permanently protected about 302 acres, also known as the Keithfield property, near the Glenn Springs area that links Croft State Park to another larger property protected by Upstate Forever. The properties represent about 7,500 acres of protected resources, Upstate Forever officials said.

“Establishing a conservation easement on Keithfield helps preserve a unique, yet vanishing, quality of life seen in rural South Carolina,” John Keith Jr., who owns the land, said.

Last year, Piedmont Natural Gas, which has a facility behind Target, told city officials it planned to build a private road from Woodruff Industrial Lane to Verdae Boulevard to provide an alternate way to get its trucks out of its facility in an emergency without having to get on Woodruff Road. It asked the city if it wanted to make it a public road and connect it with Ketron Court and Green Heron Road.

The new road will allow motorists to take Verdae Boulevard to the PNG Connector to get to Magnolia Park, where Costco and Cabela’s are located, and the shopping centers that contain Target, Academy Sports, and Trader Joe’s.

Piedmont and Verdae Properties, which owns undeveloped land along the proposed new road, will contribute $1.6 million. Verdae also provided right-of-way valued at another half million. The city of Greenville, Greenville County, and the Greenville Legislative Delegation Transportation Committee will contribute $400,000 each. The last $400,000 could come from Woodruff Road businesses in that area. —Cindy Landrum

Listening to the tracks on Greenville singer/ songwriter/guitarist Travis Smith’s new self-titled album, it’s difficult to figure out how he’s not on the pop or R&B charts. The album is tightly arranged, slickly produced modern soul with dance-floor-ready funk and more subdued, acoustic-guitar-based ballads, and it’s one of the most polished recordings that an Upstate artist has yet produced.

“It’s love music,” Smith says with a laugh. “It’s similar to Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.”

Upstate music fans who know Brooks Dixon from his more laid-back, acoustic singer/songwriter material might be a little surprised by his new single, “Good Intentions.” Over an infectious sax-spiked funk groove, Dixon and singer Sarah Gibson share a soulful duet that finds two people pondering a new relationship.

Zoom Through the Zoo 5K registration opens Registration for the Immediate Care Pelham Zoom Through the Zoo 5K opened March 1. This is the only 5K in the area that has a route incorporating a loop through the Greenville Zoo. The race, which will be held April 1 at 8:30 a.m., begins in Cleveland Park and continues throughout the zoo. Following the race at 9:30 a.m., there will be a celebration in Cleveland Park with food, games, and prizes for the top male and female runners.

Runners can register online at bit.ly/GVLzoo5K until March 30. Registration will be open on March 31 at the Zoo Business Office, and day-of-race registration will also be available. Registration is $35, and proceeds benefit the Greenville Zoo Foundation.

The building adjacent to Berea Station is currently bare, but in a few months it will become a canvas to recapture a community’s overlooked history. Berea Station Events Inc. recently launched a beautification project to design a mural at the pocket park, located along the Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail at the intersection of Sulphur Springs Road. The mural will be painted on the wall beside Berea Station’s historic train and Pullman car.

The project, called Berea, A Look Back, is a culmination of a multiyear effort, says Beverly Sutton, board member of Berea Station Events. Sutton, a 1965 graduate of Berea High School and lifelong community resident, says the mural will “make memories for Berea and not let old Berea die.”

Berea, A Look Back is a collaboration between Berea Station Events, artist Adam Schrimmer of Blank Canvas Mural Co., and Berea High School students. Students in art and media classes are interviewing Berea residents to capture the area’s oral history. From

those stories, they will help conceptualize “a visual representation of the community’s history” on the mural.

Jan Jordan, board member of Berea Station Events and a 1966 graduate of Berea High School, says that the mural will “bring back pride” to the Berea community. She spent her early life in San Souci before her family moved to Berea in 1960.

Jordan laments that much of Berea’s history has been forgotten over the years. She describes a recent trip to the Greenville County Library with a friend to search for basic history on the community. The pair was disappointed to find just a small collection of old newspaper articles. “Greenville County has memories of the cotton mills, but areas like Berea… we have to fend for ourselves and preserve our heritage,” Jordan says, adding that Berea was once primarily a cotton farming community.

The desire to protect and pass down that history is part of the reason why project organizers sought a partnership with Berea High

School. The young students represent the future of the community, Jordan and Sutton say.

“We thought it would be a good idea to tie in the students with this to showcase the people and talents in the community,” Jordan adds.

Amber Ruiz, an art teacher at the high school, says the project is a great opportunity for the students. “It won’t be a mural in the school that just students will see; it’ll be in the community. Hundreds of people drive by that area each day. It’s a way to get the kids’ names out there in a positive aspect.”

So far, Berea High students have conducted more than 20 interviews with area residents and are almost finished with that phase of the project.

“It’s been remarkable for me. There’s a lot of history that we don’t know as students.

There are a lot of stories to be told,” says Berea High senior Lenny Coello. “It’s remarkable that everyone has something to say about their parents, teachers, classmates. … I was surprised that there’s a common connec-

tion, that they all knew each other.”

Jacob Harley, a junior, has enjoyed meeting alumni of the school. “We don’t know how it was back in the day. I’ve always liked to go back and hear stories,” he says.

By talking with older residents, students have discovered new details about landmarks that they’re familiar with today. Christian Ballard, a senior, was surprised to learn that there used to be an airport on Watkins Road, an area where his family is from. His brother, Brock, a junior, recently began fishing with a friend at Huffs Lake, which has largely been forgotten in the Berea community. When he spoke with a longtime resident, however, he learned that decades ago the lake was a popular spot; as a teenager, the man had a job there selling bait for fishing.

ally want to own it. And not just own it and have it be about the community, but have youths in the community be part of it to create a sense of ownership for generations,” he says. “Murals last a long time. These kids … will get to see that mural for years.”

Schrimmer’s work can be seen around Greenville at Hampton Station, Oakblue Kitchen, Six & Twenty Distillery, and the Innovate Building. While he will add some of his own designs to the mural, the layout will largely be composed of the students’ drawings. They’ll also help Schrimmer paint parts of the mural.

Berea Station Events plans to grant one of the participating students a scholarship, with the monetary amount yet to be determined.

After completing their interviews, students will ultimately each sketch out a memory from the stories they’ve collected. The project committee will choose the winner of the scholarship based on the sketches.

The organization hopes to reproduce and sell the student sketches, as well as combine them with historical photos to make a book that celebrates Berea’s history and diversity.

The Metropolitan Arts Council provided Berea Station Events with initial grant funding, but the organization needs to raise an additional $7,200 to complete the mural by their target date of May 2017. Sutton and Jordan say they’re about halfway toward the fundraising goal.

“We’re all so ready to get this started,” says Sutton. “We’re ready to start planning the dedication.”

Two Clemson educators receive awards from auto industry Robert Prucka and Srikanth Pilla were selected for the 2017 Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award. It is the first time since the award began 54 years ago that Clemson has had two winners in a single year. Prucka, an associate professor, leads the Deep Orange 9 vehicle prototyping project and does emissions-reduction research for companies that are members of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). Pilla, an assistant professor, received a $5.81-million award from the Department of Energy to create an ultra-lightweight automobile door. He also oversees a lab where software-maker Moldex3D has donated 30 licenses worth $1.65 million.

EVA AND HENRY VEGA HOPE TO LAUNCH A RESTAURANT CATERING TO FAMILIES WITH SPECIAL-NEEDS CHILDREN On a recent Sunday night, strangers and friends gathered at Henry and Eva Vega’s Greer home for dinner.

The guests totaled nine adults and eight children who ranged in age from 1 to 9. From all outward appearances, it could’ve been a lively evening that resulted in over-tired kids and frazzled parents. But this wasn’t a typical potluck dinner party during which parents would

inevitably chase their little ones around while attempting to enjoy a few bites of food interspersed with an actual adult conversation.

This dinner had a distinct purpose: to give families with children with special needs a nice, restaurant-quality meal. The by-donation, four-course dinner was called Una Noche de Chocolate.

And the Vegas, both trained chefs who graduated from Culinary In-

stitute of the Carolinas, had hired two in-house babysitters who are also certified occupational therapists. In other words, the children would be in capable hands while the adults enjoyed a rare childfree dining experience. It’s a rare occurrence that Eva and Henry Vega know all too well.

‘WE WANT TO MAKE IT EASIER’

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the name for a group of developmental disorders, the symptoms of which can include ongoing difficulty communicating and interacting with others, and repetitive behaviors, as well as limited interests or activities. More than 200,000 U.S. cases are diagnosed each year.

This special Night of Chocolate dinner was the first monthly pop-up-style evening the Vegas plan to host, each with a specific theme. The pop-up is a precursor to the full-service restaurant they hope to open called Thyme and Play. The restaurant will cater to all families but specifically to those with special needs, while offering a locally sourced menu.

“We want to create a world away from South Carolina for just one night in a safe environment,” Eva says. “People enjoy coming together for food. We want to make it easier for families like ours.”

The chocolate-infused menu included pomme bites (pomegranate seeds covered in Lindt white chocolate and chocolate), strawberry and mixed green salad (topped with cacao nibs), strip sirloin (with marbled mashed potatoes, roasted carrots, and red wine chocolate sauce), and a Mexican pot de crème.

Dinner was served on the romantically lit back patio while the children remained indoors.

At the end of the evening, Eva took short testimonial videos of the participants and later posted them on thymeandplay.com.

In their clip, guests Crystal and Dustin Mills agreed the dinner was a success.

“The ambiance was perfect. Everything from start to finish was absolutely fantastic,” Dustin says.

“It was nice to actually sit and have a conversation and not have kids, and the bonus was the food was delicious,” Crystal says.

Todd and Leah Stafford echoed those sentiments.

“We really loved the fact that our kids are in a safe environment playing, and we got to have a wonderful meal together, and the food was fantastic,” Todd says.

“You don’t think it was too much chocolate?” Eva asked.

“No!” Todd and Leah interjected in unison.

“You can never have too much chocolate,” Todd says. “It’s like bacon.”

The Vegas have two children: a 2-year-old girl, Liana Alexi, and a

feast BORN OUT OF NECESSITY Eva and Henry’s son, Alex, almost never cried as a newborn.

He also rarely expressed excitement of any kind. At the time, Eva didn’t recognize her son’s constant calmness as anything other than a blessing.

Sometime after Alex turned 2, Eva started to notice that these traits were atypical for a young child and wondered what they meant. She had an idea.

Eva has several young relatives who have been diagnosed with neurological and physical disabilities. One of their therapists approached Eva one day while the children were playing and asked if she’d ever considered Alex might have autism. He was shortly diagnosed with ASD. Eva and Henry dealt with the news very differently.

“I went into fix-it mode with the hope of curing him,” Eva says. “For my husband, it was a punch to the gut. His dreams of having a baseball player were shattered.”

As a result, their relationship suffered.

“We lost each other,” Eva says. “It was heart-wrenching. We had to ask ourselves, ‘Are we going to do this together, or are we going to separate?’ Nobody copes the same way.”

As they worked through the various challenges of raising a child with autism, they noticed their needs didn’t fall in line with societal norms or expectations.

“We found we were compromising a lot,” Eva says. “We’d go to a nice restaurant and have to wait for a table.

Meanwhile, our son is getting agitated.

Any place where he was welcome had only frozen chicken nuggets and French fries as options. Our son doesn’t eat that.

We’ve had waiters ask us to leave because other guests were uncomfortable by our son’s behavior, the sounds he made. People would get upset. We didn’t want to be ashamed of him.”

THE PREPARATION The Vegas are uniquely equipped for this venture that is equal parts business, culinary, and community advocacy.

Both Eva and Henry are disabled Navy veterans with lifelong experience in food service.

Originally from the Dominican Republic but growing up in the Bronx, Henry was in charge of culinary operations on an aircraft carrier, managing hundreds of meals per day. Eva, who moved to Honea Path from Florida when she was very young, was raised in a family that appreciated good food and home cooking. Her mother, Magali Rivera, who is

assisting the Vegas with establishing Thyme and Play as a nonprofit, attended culinary school.

“It was part of our everyday life,” Eva says.

After moving from where the Vegas were stationed in Japan to Greenville in 2012, Henry worked in Rick Erwin’s kitchen, became a chef for a nonprofit, and now assists in Greenville Tech’s culinary institute.

Henry completed programs through Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities to further prepare him for the business of owning a restaurant.

Additionally, the Vegas’ travels allowed them to experience different cultures and cooking techniques they know many families aren’t able to firsthand.

They hope to use what they learned to provide a multicultural dining experience for their guests.

THE SOLUTION Many families in the Vegas’ situation would’ve bolstered their support system and focused on their own coping strategies and success. And no one would have faulted them. But instead, Eva used their challenges as the impetus to help other families facing similar difficulties.

Eva empathized with parents who weren’t ever able to leave their children with a babysitter because of their specific needs and who also wanted their children to be accepted by society when they all ventured out together. Henry had always dreamed of starting a restaurant.

“I advocate for all other kids, not just my own,” Eva says.

The result was the Thyme and Play concept, officially announced a year ago, which Eva hopes will be located in Greer because of the number of special-needs organizations nearby. She is currently applying for grants to help with the funding.

The dining area will be sensory-inclusive and equipped with such features as soundproof booths, belted seats, adaptive seating and table heights for wheel chairs, and handicapped-accessible restrooms.

Servers will be trained to be attentive to and aware of customers’ individual needs.

The menu will be locally sourced.

Until they find a permanent location, the Vegas will continue to host by-donation monthly dinners in their home.

They’ve also secured the use of Imagine Kitchen, a commercial kitchen for rent on The Parkway in Greer, two to three times a month as a pop-up restaurant.

“The world should be more accommodating by now, but it’s not,” Eva says. “In the end, we’re building a better tomorrow.”

A Body in Motion The many moods of husband-and-wife duo Megan Jean and the Klay Family Band Megan Jean and Byrne Klay

In the four years since their last album, Megan Jean and the Klay Family Band have undergone something of an identity crisis. Sure, there are elements that have remained the same: Megan Jean’s hurricane of a voice that can glide from baritone to mezzo soprano without breaking a sweat; the engine-room thrum-and-stomp of her husband Byrne Klay on banjo and bass drum — that’s all intact.

But depending on when you might have seen them on their endless tour around the country, Megan Jean and Byrne Klay might have been a folk-tinged duo with Jean on acoustic guitar, or a washboard-strumming revue heavy on campy 1950s horror movie references and 1920s flapper-jazz style vocals. In their most recent incarnation, they’re a mesh of fiercely rhythmic, percussion-heavy propulsion, with the banjo and Jean’s roofshaking voice the only melodic elements.

It might seem that there’s some grand evolutionary design in place, but Jean says

that necessity, and injury, have been the mothers of their invention.

“I started on guitar, and then realized I needed to have drums to get folks dancing,” she says. “And I needed to get ’em dancing if I wanted to play where the people were on Saturday night. I switched to washboard, which hurt my hands and shoulders terribly after a few hundred shows over several years.”

She adds, “These days I’m playing a full kit and singing, and it’s the most fun I’ve ever had onstage.”

Byrne Klay is one of those musical wizards who can essentially play any instrument he picks up, but even so, his style has changed as well. “Last year I started playing an electric banjo,” he says. “It’s a whole new thing for me. It plays and resonates like a banjo but sustains like a guitar. I’ve learned a lot making that thing work beneath Megan’s voice. And Megan’s drumming has really developed; her feel for rhythm is pure heartbeat.”

Klay adds, “A good musician knows that the secret is to tune your instrument to the strongest heartbeat. The rest is just a body

in motion.”

The result is that Jean has more space than ever to flex her vocal muscle, which she does with even more skill on the KFB’s new album, “Tarantistas.” The duo recorded the album at The Jam Room in Columbia with engineer Zac Thomas. “We have special chemistry with Zac,” Klay says. “As an engineer, he’s the perfect partner for us. His ears are as good as Megan’s and his skill set covers everything we can’t. He has great taste and really listens to how we play.”

Jean estimates that the band has played 600 shows since their last album, and despite the hardships of being an independent band that literally lives on the road (their home is their touring van much of the time), the experience they’ve accumulated has been invaluable.

“I think it’s been a blessing of sorts for us, to exist like we have in a vacuum, devoid of industry interest,” she says. “We’ve been able to develop our own sound organically, just playing enough to keep gas in our tank and food in our bellies. We run our band like an

Bollywood films are well known for their flamboyance, but underneath the elaborate costumes and expertly choreographed dance numbers, there’s often a simple love story that serves as the heartbeat of the film.

That’s the spirit that rests at the center of “Taj Express: The Bollywood Musical Revue,” the hit musical that arrives at the Peace Center on Sunday, March 12, featuring 2,500 different pieces of wardrobe and 30 onstage roles.

“Taj Express” takes place on the titular train as it takes passengers throughout India. The trip allows for dazzling displays of choreography and costumes that express different styles and traditions throughout the country. The main characters are all, in a sense, on board to chase their respective destinies. The regal-but-poor Arjun has set out on a journey to find his childhood sweetheart. He doesn’t

know it, but that girl, Kareena, is on the train too, hoping to meet up with the man of her dreams.

In the meantime, a young composer named Shankar, played by Mikhail Sen, is also on board, struggling to write the score for a new film. That score forms the basis for the musical numbers in the show; as Shankar creates the music, musicians onstage perform it, and the cast is caught up in kaleidoscopic dance routines.

Sen has an extensive list of performing credits on his resume covering film, television, and theater, but the sheer scale of “Taj Express” took him by surprise. “I’ve never done a Bollywood production before,” he says. “It’s phenomenal. The amount of work that goes into this is ridiculous, just in terms of scale. You’ve got a cast of 30 people and a crew of 19 all working extremely hard to put on a show every night. The costumes, the live projections. It all comes together beautifully. It’s a real spectacle.”

Sen says that the plot device

of the train moving throughout India is a great way to display the different styles and traditions the country has to offer. “It really captures the spirit of India and takes it to another level,” he says.

The actor worked with awardwinning writer and director Toby Gough to weave a story into all the pageantry; together, the pair crafted Shankar’s dialogue.

“Bollywood is all about the singing and dancing, but we’re able to weave this narrative that goes into those sequences beautifully,” Sen says. “We had to dig deeper and find those connections and bring out a narrative that takes the audience through the journey.”

Ultimately, Sen says that he found the key to his dialogue by working with rhythm. “It’s about how rhythm is ingrained in our bodies,” he says. “I played with different rhythms in speech and thought and gesture. There are rhythms to everything.”

And that goes double for the dancing. Sen sounds a bit in awe

as he talks about the way the dancers in “Taj Express” push their bodies.

“The dancing is phenomenal,” he says. “The cast has undergone a huge amount of preparation to do this for 64 shows. The stamina level means everything, because it’s so high-intensity.

Everyone brings their A-game night after night, five or six nights a week.”

Never let it be said that North Carolina’s Parmalee didn’t pay their dues on the way to a platinum record. You can start with the fact that for the first few years after they formed in 2001, no one knew what to do with their part-rock, part-country sound.

They had a little too much twang for rock radio and louder guitars than country radio was used to at the time.

That lack of an easy niche for their style essentially means that Parmalee had to build their fan-base the old-fashioned way: nonstop touring. They lived on the road for the better part of a decade. And it was at one of those hundreds of shows that, in 2010, trag-

edy struck, one that would make trying to get on the radio seem like child’s play.

Drummer Scott Thomas stumbled upon two thieves who were trying to rob the band’s RV, and the resulting shootout between him and the robbers left him with three bullet wounds in the leg, stomach, and shoulder.

Thomas was in a coma for 10 days, but eventually rejoined the band in May 2011.

Oddly enough, that’s right about the time the band’s luck started changing.

They signed to Nashville’s Stoney Creek Records and put out the rollicking morning-after rocker “Musta Had a Good Time,” which coincided nicely with country radio’s move toward more pop- and rock-influenced songs. “Musta Had a Good Time” hit

the Top 40, and their follow-up, the surging acoustic ballad “Carolina,” hit No. 2 on Billboard’s “Hot Country Songs” chart and went platinum in 2013.

“We just kind of did our thing and country just kind of curved toward where we were at,” says singer Matt Thomas, Scott’s brother. “We spent a long time out there with nobody really able to pinpoint us. It took three or four years to break the door down. Once we wrote a song like ‘Carolina,’ we kind of figured it out. We just came to a good intersection together with radio.”

And life after a platinum record has got to be pretty close to Easy Street, right?

“Well, last night we played a show in Kansas City, and then we had to catch a flight to Houston the next morning,” Thomas says.

“So we were done playing at midnight, then got up at 3 a.m. to get to the airport, and we still haven’t slept. It’s a lot of work. It’s a 24hour job, seven days a week.”

And the band loves every minute of it.

“We’re not complaining,” Thomas says. “It’s a lot of hustle, but you’ve got to be out there.

You’ve got to go after it.”

“If you don’t, somebody else will,” he adds with a laugh.

It’s a sobering reality in a post-internet music industry: Big sales don’t come as easily as they used to, and constant touring is a way of life. Luckily, by the time Parmalee hit

the big time, they were already used to that.

“Touring has always been our backbone,“ Thomas says. “From booking and promoting our own shows to setting up the PA ourselves to dealing with club owners and different people in the industry, there’s a value in that. Everybody should do that; you make mistakes and you learn a lot.”

Parmalee will play a free show after the Greenville Swamp Rabbits game at Bon Secours Wellness Arena on Friday, and Thomas says the band is looking forward to heading back to the Carolinas. “Everybody’s excited because they saw us back in the day,” he says.

“They feel like part of the success we’ve had.

It’s nice coming home knowing that everybody sees that it was worth the struggle.”

With the recent passing of Mardi Gras, the food of Lousiana has been top of mind.

I spent the first 10 years of my life there, making for a rich and flavorful culinary foundation. Although I’m sure I ate my fair share of chicken nuggets, “kid food” also included bold and spicy dishes like jambalaya, ettoufee, and just about any kind of meat or seafood (yes, that includes alligator) prepared with blackening seasoning. Blackening, as a preparation, is as common in Louisiana as frying. It’s on virtually every restaurant menu and used by home cooks in lieu of the usual salt and pepper to flavor seafood and poultry.

My mother likes to tell the story of when we moved to South Carolina (only briefly at the time) when I was 11 — after a few weeks in the new state, Louisiana having been my entire life experience at that point, I complained to my mother that “all the food here needs salt.” Everything seemed flavorless in comparison to what I knew. (No offense intended to South Carolina’s own rich culinary tradition.)

Throw blackened chicken on a sandwich with mayo, lettuce, and tomato. Turn blackened chicken into blackened chicken salad with a little mayo and celery. You can use it on just about any fish, shrimp, or chicken. The only rule is that you are liberal with the spices — the heavy-handed seasoning is partly what makes something “blackened.”

Blackening Seasoning Blend 1 tablespoon sweet paprika 2 1⁄2 teaspoons salt

“Blackened” should not be confused with “spicy hot.” The spice blend has some cayenne, of course, but heat is not the dominant quality. The brilliance of blackening seasoning is that it adds intense flavor that is also always complementary to the protein at hand. It somehow manages to be both the star of the show and the supporting cast.

Surprisingly, perhaps, the spices that make up the blackening seasoning blend are common, everyday pantry staples — onion powder, garlic powder, dried oregano, etc. It’s the ratios and composition of these that make the spectacular blackening seasoning.

“Too Perfect”

When you think of local theater venues, Greenville Tech’s Center for Manufacturing Innovation (CMI) isn’t the first thing to come to mind. In fact, it probably doesn’t come to mind at all.

However, this Friday CMI will host a performance of “Too Perfect,” an original sci-fi play by Greenville Tech’s head of speech communication and theater department, David Burke. “This play is my first effort at a relatively new wave of theatrical experimentation: site-specific theater,” Burke says. “The concept is to adapt dramatic performance to a space not originally intended for theatrical production.” Burke was inspired to write “Too Perfect” after reading about a teaching assistant at Georgia Tech University who was actually a computer. The often-comedic play explores thought-provoking questions about technology, AI, and the very nature of reality.

Or as Neo in “The Matrix” would say, “Whoa.”

Last New Year’s Eve, Daniel Casasanta, bandleader for the bass-driven, improvheavy Upstate band Sly Sparrow, made a resolution.

“I was thinking about what I wanted to do in 2017,” he says. “And what I wanted to do was get eight or so bands together on one stage in one day, kind of like a festival.”

Unlike some other resolutions, Cassanta made this one come true, recruiting a couple of blues-heavy guitar slingers (Eric Weiler and Shane Pruitt), a cutting-edge prog-rock group (Buffalo Head), some young Southern rockers (Trevor Hewitt and Justin McCorkle, son of the late Marshall Tucker Band guitarist George McCorkle), and more in an event simply called The Show. “I wanted to mix it up when I picked the bands,” he says. “I wanted to have a little bit of everything: some rock, some blues, some country, some Southern rock. I wanted them all to be in front of a crowd they might not typically play in front of.” —Vincent Harris

The Grateful Brothers are a group that came by their name honestly. About a year ago, founding members Zach Thigpen and Brad Crowe (both singer/guitarists) were trying to start a new project together, and their conversation turned to the music they loved the most.

“My favorite band for most of my adult life has been the Grateful Dead,” Thigpen says. “And Brad’s has been the Allman Brothers Band.

So I suggested we do a Grateful Dead thing, and he suggested we do the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead.” From there, the two formed a six-piece ensemble with powerhouse local players Jeff Holland (percussion), James Hall (drums), Nathan Hawkins (bass), and Adam McFarlane (keyboards). Then, following in the footsteps of both groups, they let the improv happen. “We’ve really taken the songs into our own space,” Thigpen says. “That’s the most exciting part is that now we can go to some really interesting places with this music, which is fun for the musicians, and I think it translates to the audience as well.” —Vincent Harris

Greenville Wordsmiths presents The Yarn

Every month since M. Judson’s Booksellers & Storytellers opened downtown, Adrienne Burris, of the local nonprofit Greenville Wordsmiths, has hosted a storytelling event called The Yarn. Inspired by NPR’s storytelling program, The Moth, the setup for The Yarn is simple: Participants prepare a five- to six-minute story from their lives based around a certain topic (this month’s topic is karma) and then their names are drawn at random.

They either tell their story or listen to others tell theirs.

“I just wanted an event where people in Greenville could come share stories about their lives,” Burris says. “It was also important for

me to create a community where people could take risks and put themselves out there. Because Greenville Wordsmiths, which runs free creative writing and publishing workshops for kids in elementary and middle schools, focuses on encouraging kids to take creative risks. This is a bunch of adults showing them that they need to put themselves out there. It was kind of a way for us to practice what we preach.”

And if you’ve never spoken in front of a crowd before, don’t worry. Burris has a way of looking at The Yarn that should make any prospective storyteller a lot more comfortable. “You never have to feel pressured to tell a story,” she says. “Being there as a listener is just as important a role as being a storyteller.

That being said, I would also say you should think of it as a group of friends. When you tell

Clemson Invitational

The Reserve at Lake Keowee For the second consecutive year, Clemson University’s women’s golf team will host the Clemson Invitational at The Reserve at Lake Keowee. The Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course will provide the backdrop for a practice round on March 30 followed by competitive play among participating collegiate women’s golf teams from across the country. Seventeen women’s golf teams will participate. Spectators are welcome, as this event is open to the general public and there is no charge to watch.

The Happy Geezer I keep a sharp eye out for the advantages of age and have a few items to report here.

I’m a minor-league hiker, which is to say that I take good walks in Cleveland Park or out at Connestee or up Paris Mountain or around the lake at Furman. Nothing serious, but I like being out watching the birds.

I often go by myself, and because some of the trails are rough and rocky, I use a trekking pole, an alpenstock to the Germans. I don’t want to topple off the trail to be swallowed by the kudzu.

Mine is just an adjustable aluminum item with a rubber tip, a sculpted plastic grip, and a little lanyard to keep me from dropping it in the creek or down a crevice.

The thing has a small spring in it, which seems to liven up my steps, though I may be fooling myself about this.

respond, “Yes, I turned 65 just last week,” the clerk might say, “You don’t look a day over 50” as he hands me the quarter that he has already drawn out of the till.

The pleasure of this exchange is small enough, but tell me a better way to fish out a compliment.

Other little pleasures? Well, some restaurants have a senior menu which works fine if, like me, you enjoy an early dinner — which is another way of saying you like to get to bed early and sleep well.

And best of all, even young women greet me since they know that they are a lot faster than I am.

I like it so much that I sometimes use it on my urban walks, say over Liberty Bridge and then up the river behind the Peace Center. It gives me a nice rhythm. What’s more, folks are really polite to me as I bounce along. Sometimes they open doors. Plus, I get a lot of “hello”s and “good morning”s. People smile at me the way they smile at babies in carriages.

And best of all, even young women greet me since they know that they are a lot faster than I am.

I know I should be ashamed of myself for taking this advantage, but I can’t resist the courtesies and am glad to know that such kindnesses survive.

Another plus: I like the little 5 percent geezer discount that I get in the market at midweek.

It’s not that I buy a lot and save big money. It’s just fun to see some old friends there among the canned goods and packaged prunes once a week. We clog the aisles with our carts while talking about good times and grandchildren.

The rest of the shopping pleasure comes at checkout where the clerk faces the existential dilemma: Should he ask my age or risk insulting me by applying the discount without asking?

My suggestion for the clerk: Ask me, “You couldn’t be a senior, could you?” And when I

Your mailbox will never be empty because, member or not, AARP will bomb you with their material. I like their little magazine; my attention span may have faded a bit, but I can still handle its blip pieces. Those AARP editors learned a lot at the knee of Reader’s Digest.

As a retiree, I enjoy being able to drive about Greenville during the safest time of the day. That falls between 9:30 and 9:45 on Sunday morning when the traffic is pretty light and people don’t speed or run red lights very often. Not to mention that it is nice not to have drivers honking because I’m driving too slowly.

I enjoy the gracious insurance agent who, when I complain about my rates (as in “I drive less and pay more”), starts in sweetly, “Well, as we get older…” I want to say, “Are you really talking about both of us?” but she’s too nice for my wit.

One last pleasure: I like having my ID checked.

I go to the downtown festivals and ballgames frequently, and Greenville is aggressive about checking the age of everyone who wants to buy a beer. They’d check me if my beard reached my knees and was white as snow. I just love it. Sometimes I get one of those age validation bracelets even when I’m not thirsty.

I hope you’ll send me happy stories of your retirement years, but keep them brief and send them early in the day.
