With major developments like Camperdown and the Grand Bohemian Hotel occurring on Falls Park’s edges, Greenville will evaluate how it can protect its natural resources WORDS BY CINDY LANDRUM

Unlike many city parks that attract users with their sports fields or playground equipment, Falls Park’s attraction is natural.

The Reedy River, Reedy River Falls, and green space beckon the park’s visitors, serving as a downtown oasis.

With major projects on the river’s east bank either underway — Camperdown, Centennial American Properties’ redevelopment of the block of South Main across from the Peace Center that includes office space, a 140-room AC Hotel, apartments, retail, and condominiums — or planned — a Grand Bohemian hotel by the Kessler Collection where the Wyche law firm is now located — the city is focusing on how it can protect the park’s natural resources.

“Urban development needs to be led by public space planning, and it’s Falls Park,” said Darren Meyer, principal of MKSK, a landscape architecture, planning, and urban design consultant working with the city on those public spaces.

The river’s east bank, defined as the river between Japanese Dogwood Lane and the Bowater building, has tremendous potential, Meyer said.

“Even though it’s not the ceremonial entrance to the park, it will get a lot of use,” he said.

That raises the question of what can be done to help protect the natural resources that made the park so popular in the first place, Meyer said. “How do we stabilize the banks and manage undergrowth? How do the pathways take shape? What are the options from the more golf-course approach to paths to having more of a natural edge?” he said.

One question is how the plan deals with the Bowater garage, which is mere feet from the river. Landscaping could be used to screen, not hide, the garage from the park. “One thing to look at it if the garage wasn’t there, would the screen work there,” he told members of the City Council’s neighborhood and planning committee. Landscaping could be used, he said.

A staircase will create a new Falls Park entry from Main Street to Japanese Dogwood Lane. The design, which hasn’t been finalized and must go through the Planning Commission, likely will incorporate landings so the staircase can be a social space, Meyer said. Camperdown has agreed to build the staircase and the city will reimburse the company over 25 years through tax revenue growth generated by the development.

In addition, three options are being studied for the public green space at the corner of Main and Broad streets. Edward Kinney, senior landscape architect for the city, said the corner needs to serve two purposes — moving people through the development and providing a gathering place for people to linger. The options range from a small urban forest with movable seating to a design with more distinct paths to one that has planters and seating areas.

The urban panel of the Design Review Board will hold a public hearing in conjunction with the city's application for streetscapes and intersection improvements in conjunction with the Camperdown project at its meeting at 4 p.m., Feb. 1 in City Council Chambers, located on the 10th floor of City Hall.

This is one option being considered for the new stairway from Main Street to Japanese Dogwood Lane.

There are three key public spaces on land touching the Camperdown and the proposed Grand Bohemian location — the corner of Main and Broad streets, the new stairway from Main to Japanese Dogwood and the east bank of the Reedy River near the Bowater parking garage, and the Bowater building.

The one-year anniversary of the largest single-day protest in the nation’s history was commemorated across the U.S. on Saturday, Jan. 20, including in Greenville at Falls Park on the Reedy.

The Women’s March anniversary rally, organized by the Upstate Coalition for Equality and other advocacy groups, drew more than 1,000 men, women, and children to the downtown park.

The event was designed to harness “collective energy” around a variety of issues, including electing more women to office, eliminating homelessness, and more. Speakers included elected officials, DACA supporters, League of Women voters representatives, and homelessness activists, among others.

Most scientists are in agreement that life began on Earth about 3.8 billion years ago with the emergence of simple, single-celled organisms. But how did the building blocks of life begin in the first place? It’s a question that humans have pondered for centuries.

Now scientists at Furman University and The Scripps Research Institute have published a new study that might just help answer that question.

The study, which was published in the January 2018 edition of the science journal Nature Communications, demonstrates how key chemical reactions that support life today could have been carried out with ingredients likely present on Earth some 4 billion years ago.

“This research establishes a potential chemical precursor to the citric acid cycle, which may have been functional on the early Earth prior to the origins of life,” said Greg Springsteen, a chemistry professor at Furman University and co-author of the study.

The citric acid cycle, or TCA cycle, is an eight-step chain of chemical reactions that convert carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into carbon dioxide and adenosine triphosphate, which cells use for energy. Every oxygen-breathing organism, from fleas to flamingos, relies on the TCA cycle to release stored energy in cells.

In previous studies, researchers attempted to formulate a recipe for early life by trying to replicate the chemical reactions that form today’s TCA cycle. But some of the molecules, or ingredients, needed to sustain the cycle were likely too fragile to withstand the harsh environment of the early Earth.

That’s why Springsteen and his co-authors instead looked to replicate the reactions by using ingredients found on early Earth.

Now, after five years of experiments, the researchers have identified feasible ingredients between two nonbiological cycles of chemical reactions, the HKG cycle and the malonate cycle. Both of the cycles use chemical reactions that resemble the TCA cycle, including the ability to introduce new source material into the cycle.

The researchers used their understanding of reaction mechanisms to look for underlying chemical patterns. In the lab, they determined whether these patterns are sustainable in a reaction flask without the aid of complex biological machinery.

“The modern biological TCA cycle is a central metabolic pathway that releases stored energy, but requires the complex machinery of life to function,” Springsteen said. “The identified precursor pathways are functional within a reaction flask outside of life, and may have been the template from which a TCA metabolism arose.”

As for the future, Springsteen and his coauthors plan to conduct additional research to determine how these chemical reactions could have become as sustainable as the TCA cycle is today. The researchers think that as enzymes (proteins that act as catalysts within living cells) became available, they could have led to the replacement of nonbiological molecules in these fundamental reactions to make them more elaborate and efficient.

“The chemistry could have stayed the same over time, it was just the nature of the molecules that changed,” said Ramanarayanan Krishnamurthy, associate professor of chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute and co-author of the study. “The molecules evolved to be more complicated over time based on what biology needed.”

– Greg Springsteen, Furman University chemistry professor and study co-author The newly published study suggests that the two cycles could have come together to form a primitive version of the TCA cycle, which would have provided the chemical architecture necessary to jumpstart life on Earth. It also reveals that at the center of these reactions is a molecule called glyoxylate, which previous studies show could have been available on early Earth and is part of the modern TCA cycle.

Springsteen said the guiding research hypothesis behind the study is the notion that “the chemistry of life” is driven by metabolism — a network of reactions that occur inside the body and provide adequate energy for life processes. The types of reactions, and the routes they take in this metabolism, are remarkably consistent across living systems.

Evolution, is not only essential to understanding life on Earth. It’s also essential to our search for extraterrestrial life.

“This may help us to understand where to look out in the universe for other life.

If we can identify those kinds of environments that allow these precursor reaction pathways to occur, we might know exactly where in the universe we are most likely to find living systems,” Springsteen said. “I think that’s why NASA is interested in funding our work.”

Springsteen acknowledged that one of the two TCA cycle precursors described in the new study was established in experiments carried out by two undergraduates, Chandler Joel Rhea and Julia Nelson.

Clemson University has been named champions of the 2017 GameDay Recycling Challenge.

The university placed first in total recycling, with 98,521 pounds of material recycled, composted, or donated. Clemson previously won the category in 2014, and came in second place in 2015 and 2016.

“Participating in the competition is a way to push ourselves, and we are proud of how we improved upon last year’s system,” said Dave Vendeventer, Clemson University’s recycling manager. “We would not have been able to achieve our GameDay recycling goals without the hard work of the recycling team and the support of the Clemson community.”

The GDRC is made possible through a partnership among the College and University Recycling Coalition, Keep America Beautiful, RecycleMania Inc., and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Seventy colleges and universities participated in a friendly competition to engage college football fans to promote recycling and waste reduction. In total, the schools recycled or composted 2.06 million pounds of game-day waste during the fall football season, which broke down to recycling over 1.5 million pounds of bottles, cans, paper, cardboard, and other materials. The competition prevented

the emissions of 2,410 MTCO2E (metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent) of greenhouse gases, which is equivalent to removing over 500 cars from the road for a year.

Greenville County ranked among best in state for obtaining mortgage If potential homebuyers are searching to get a mortgage in South Carolina, Greenville County is an ideal place to start.

According to SmartAsset, a financial technology company, the county ranks third in the state in the annual study on Best Places to Get a Mortgage, behind No. 1 Horry County and No. 2 Charleston County.

SmartAsset “compares the likelihood of mortgage approval by county, in addition to mortgage rates, average five-year

borrowing costs, and property taxes.”

To compile the final rankings, SmartAsset evaluates and equally weighs four factors: “overall borrowing costs, ease of securing a mortgage, cheap property taxes, and cheap annual mortgage payments.”

According to the study, Greenville County has a 65.44 percent loan rate, the highest in the state. Property tax is an average of $9,000, which ranks 38th out of 46 counties in South Carolina.

New baby monkey is Greenville Zoo’s first birth of 2018 The Greenville Zoo has announced its first birth of 2018.

A baby Angolan colobus monkey was born earlier this month in the primate exhibit and discovered by animal care staff on Jan. 10, according to zoo director Jeff Bullock.

The new baby monkey, which does not have a name yet, has been on exhibit since its birth. But the zoo waited to make an official announcement until staff was confident it was healthy, according to Bullock. The baby’s sex has not yet been determined.

Bullock said the new monkey is the third baby of Nuru and Valentino.

Nuru, the female, and Valentino, the male, have been paired together since June 2015 as part of the Species Survival breeding program. Nuru was born at the San Diego Zoo in 2006, and Valentino was born at Jungle Island in Miami in 2002.

The pair’s first baby was born on Feb. 16, 2016, but died a day later due to head and chest trauma. Their second baby, Zuri, was born on Oct. 14, 2016.

The species is native to northern Angola and parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with a second population found in Tanzania and Kenya.

Furman University among 200 schools that ‘pay you back’ Furman University has been listed No. 4 in Best Schools for Making an Impact by The Princeton Review.

In the 2018 edition of The Princeton Review’s “Colleges That Pay You Back: The 200 Schools That Give You the Best Bang for Your Tuition Buck,” Furman climbed from No. 24 in last year’s edition to No. 4 in this year’s.

Robert Franek, lead author and The Princeton Review’s editor-in-chief, said very few of the nation’s four-year schools make this list. “These schools were bona fide standouts for the return they deliver on one’s college investment,” he said.

“They offer stellar academics, generous aid awards to students with need and/ or merit, and provide their undergrads with career services from day one plus a lifetime of alumni connections.”

The Princeton Review’s list is based on student responses to questions about community service, student government, sustainability, and student engagement on campus.

Several hospital systems across the Upstate are taking extra precautions to protect their patients and staff because of the widespread flu in South Carolina.

Greenville Health System (GHS) has implemented visitation restrictions for people under 18 years of age except under special circumstances. Children approved to visit will be asked to wear masks to help prevent transmission of possible respiratory illness.

The health system is also limiting visitors to two adults per patient at any time and asking anyone with respiratory illnesses to delay visits until they are well.

The precautions are being taken at all GHS hospitals, including Greenville Memorial Hospital, Children’s Hospital, Greer Memorial Hospital, Hillcrest Memorial Hospital, and others.

“Flu levels are increasing throughout our area, and we need to take these additional steps to help protect the health and safety of our patients,” said Dr. Robin LaCroix, medical director of GHS Children’s Hospital. “Flu can cause serious complications and even cause death. We ask that everyone continue to take steps to help keep themselves healthy over the flu season.”

In addition to GHS, Bon Secours St. Francis Health System has implemented visitation restrictions at its mom-and-baby unit at St. Francis Eastside and oncology unit at St. Francis Downtown. However, AnMed Health and Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System are asking people to voluntarily refrain from visiting patients.

To protect patients, staff, and physicians from possible exposure, the hospitals are

asking visitors to wash their hands and limit contact with other people. The restrictions at GHS and Bon Secours are expected to continue until flu season subsides.

The flu season lasts from October to May, but typically picks up during the coldest months, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Those at highest risk include people 65 and older; people with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease; pregnant women; and young children.

Flu and other contagious respiratory illnesses can unknowingly be transmitted for several days prior to the first symptoms appearing, according to the CDC. Symptoms include sudden onset of fever, dry cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and nasal congestion.

Children may also have nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Most people recover in a few days to two weeks, but some develop complications like pneumonia.

The CDC estimates that the flu has caused between 9.2 million and 35.6 million illnesses, between 140,000 and 710,000 hospitalizations, and 12,000 to 56,000 deaths each year since 2010.

As of Jan. 13, 24 South Carolinians had died from the flu this season, according to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The department also reported 2,141 documented cases of the flu in Greenville County for the week ending Jan. 13. GHS alone reported more than 623 positive flu cases for the week ending Dec. 31.

These gifts were donated anonymously by parents of BJU graduates who are thankful for the education their children have received.

Pettit said he is very thankful for these donations, which will continue to make BJU a great and affordable Christian

Greenville Humane Society opens the Healing Place, starts the Hope Fund On Monday, Jan. 15, the Greenville Humane Society announced the opening of the Healing Place, a 4,500-square-foot facility that will house sick and injured animals requiring rest and recovery before adoption. No other shelter in the Southeast “has a facility dedicated to treating sick and injured animals,” according to a news release.

Of the 1.5 million shelter animals that are euthanized in the U.S. each year, many are adoptable animals that have contracted “highly treatable illnesses.” But when shelters lack the ability to provide necessary care and there’s nowhere else for the animals to go, euthanasia becomes the only option. With this new resource, the Greenville Humane Society will be able to provide lifesaving care to sick and injured animals.

“The Healing Place gives us the capacity to save more animals. There are so many that need our help,” said Kim Pitman, executive director of the Greenville Humane Society.

The Healing Place includes treatment areas for animals with upper respiratory infections, as well as quarantine areas for conditions like parvo and ringworm.

As cooler temperatures sweep through the Upstate, people are falling victim, literally, to icy patches on sidewalks and roads. While you would like to stay 100% injury-free, you still have to go on with your daily routine. So we’ve thrown together a list of what to expect when wintery weather comes your way!

That way, you can have advanced warning of what’s to come. After that, winterize your home! If you have any cement walkways or surfaces that may become slick if icy, spread potassium-based melting granules over these surfaces. Unlike plain salt (or sodium-based melters), potassium-based melters will not damage cement surfaces, vegetation, or indoor surfaces if tracked inside. In addition, winterize your car! Add a few extra minutes to your morning routine in case your vehicle windows are covered with frost or winter precipitation. Invest in an ice scraper, which can be found for under $5 in most retail stores. Or, you could plan ahead and put an old towel or sheet over your windows to prevent any precipitation from sticking. Above all, DO NOT pour warm water on your windows to melt frost, ice, or snow. The two extreme temperatures may cause your windows or windshield to crack! Whatever you do, please do not try to drive your vehicle if your line of vision is blocked by winter precipitation. Not only is it dangerous, but it is considered illegal to drive with an obstructed view.

Walk Like a Pro If you absolutely have to walk on surfaces that may be slick, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Walk with slow, small strides and try not to be hurried. Wear boots or shoes with treads; avoid shoes with smooth surfaces. If at all possible, try not to carry heavy loads that will cause you to be thrown off balance.

Furman University’s football program received a $1 million gift on Jan. 11 from an anonymous donor.

The donation will establish the John Bagwell Offensive Coordinator Endowment. John Bagwell, who died in a car accident in 2003, was a 1989 graduate of Furman and a running back for the Paladins.

“This most recent contribution will honor the legacy and memory of John Bagwell, an outstanding football player who was instrumental in the Paladins winning the 1988 national championship,” said Furman Athletics Director Mike Buddie.

Furman also received a $1 million gift last August that established the Bobby Johnson Head Football Coaching Endowment. Johnson, who is now retired, served as head coach for the Paladins for seven years.

Buddie said both gifts are for the recently launched Football Championship Fund,

which was created to provide increased financial support for the program.

Head Coach Clay Hendrix, who is working to build a championship-level program for Furman, said Furman football is grateful for the John Bagwell donation. “I believe it further exemplifies the excitement about the direction of our program,” he said. “I also believe this is a wonderful way to honor one of our all-time greats. Anyone who ever saw John Bagwell play would testify to that.”

oining the University Center of Greenville plays perfectly into Converse College’s strategy to grow without changing its mission of providing an all-women undergraduate education on its campus in Spartanburg.

During a time when all-women colleges have struggled, Converse, one of only three dozen all-women colleges in the country, has set enrollment records in each of the last seven years. Undergraduate enrollment is at a 25-year high.

Twenty-three percent of those vacancies required early childhood certification that will be provided by Converse at UCG.

Twenty-three percent of those vacancies required early childhood certification that will be provided by Converse at UCG. The school’s graduate programs, which are co-educational, are growing, too.

Graduate classes are offered on campus, online, and in 35 public school districts across the state. In July, the school will begin offering its Master of Arts in teaching degree in early childhood education at the University Center.

Bachelor degree completion programs are also something Converse wants to explore, said Converse College President Krista Newkirk.

“Greenville makes perfect sense for us,” she said. “We are looking for ways to grow our graduate program. Greenville is a large population center that’s experiencing a lot of growth, and it has educational needs that aren’t being met. We’re trying to match our programs to the need.”

The MAT in early childhood education program is a 46-hour program open to students with a bachelor’s degree in any field and provides teaching certification to work with young children from birth to third grade.

“The program is ideal for people changing careers or returning to the workforce after a break, such as raising children,” said Lienne Medford, Converse’s dean of graduate studies and distance learning. “Providing this population with a convenient, face-to-face program that helps them successfully transition into teaching has the potential to significantly impact early childhood teacher shortages in Greenville

“In just four years, the number of South Carolina students graduating with a bachelor’s degree eligible for teacher certification fell by 30 percent,” the CERRA report said. “Since 201213, the number of hires coming from a South Carolina teacher education program has dropped by 25 percent.”

Newkirk said Converse plans to expand its presence at UCG with several additional programs in the future, including a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy in fall 2019 and, perhaps, Masters of Arts in teaching degrees for other levels. All Converse’s program offerings at UCG are pending accreditor approval.

“We’re constantly looking for areas where we can meet need and desire,” she said.

Newkirk is a member of the OneSpartanburg Talent Action Team that is creating a formal framework for large employers and colleges to discuss unmet workforce and professional development needs.

“Converse will use this information to evaluate how we are delivering our curriculum at the undergraduate and graduate levels,” she said. “I would like to expand this conversation to the Greenville area, including ways Converse can help fill needs for professional development and continuing education for employees of Greenville-area businesses.”

W

hen the University Center of Greenville was established three decades ago, Greenville was the largest metropolitan area in the Southeast without a four-year public higher education institution.

The idea was to give residents a place to take classes and earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees from well-ranked, accredited colleges and universities in South Carolina in fields that aligned with the Upstate’s job market without actually having to leave Greenville, their full-time jobs, and their families.

Today, about 500 students each year get degrees that were largely or completely earned at the University Center.

“The impact of what we’re doing here is of a significant regional university and all of the graduates are from here,” said David A. Taylor, CEO and president of the UCG. “We focus on degrees that are aligned to our actual job market in the greater Greenville area. ” According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2016 American Community Survey, an estimated 64,572 Greenville County residents 25 years or older have some college but no degree. Why is it important that those residents get a college degree? As a person’s educational attainment rises, so does their income. And as educational attainment rises, the likelihood of unemployment falls.

More money According to the Georgetown University Center for Education and the Workforce, the average worker with a bachelor’s degree will earn 35 percent more than someone with an associate degree. The average master’s degree holder will earn 17 percent more than somebody with a bachelor’s degree. And the average doctoral degree holder will earn 33 percent more than those with a master’s degree.

Greenville County has made some progress in increasing the percentage of college-educated residents. The 2016 American Community Survey estimates that 32.9 percent of residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher. That’s up from 26.2 percent of residents in the 2010 Census.

“It’s growing, but it’s growing too slowly,” Taylor said.

So is per capita income, a primary measure of an area’s economic competitiveness, although Greenville has made some progress. The problem is, however, that other major economic centers in the Southeast are making progress, too, and often at rates greater than Greenville’s.

“We lag significantly behind other major economic centers in the Southeast on both fronts,” Taylor said. “Greenville is prospering, but there’s an opportunity for much greater prosperity.”

Greenville’s needs A 2012 study by the College of Charleston’s Riley Center identified greater Greenville’s top education needs as education, health professions, and business.

Multiple members of UCG — Clemson University, Anderson University, University of South Carolina Upstate, Furman University, and Converse College — offer education degrees or soon will be.

In the health-care field, Clemson University, the University of South Carolina Upstate, and Anderson University offer undergraduate and graduate degrees at UCG. Three of Greenville’s largest business programs either

began or continue to be at UCG. Clemson and the University of South Carolina’s MBA programs in Greenville grew at UCG before moving to downtown. Anderson University currently offers an MBA program and a bachelor’s in business administration program at UCG. “We’ve fostered the growth of MBA programs in Greenville,” Taylor said.

One critical need in Greenville is for bachelor’s completion programs in business, he said.

Taylor said when he talks to business leaders, they identify accounting, supply chain, finance economics, and marketing as high-demand degrees. General business, general business administration, health care management, human resources, management, and international business are also in demand, he said.

“The University Center is the best way to address those demands,” Taylor said.

“If you pick the right major and attend an accredited, well-ranked university and you put in the effort to get good grades, there’s no doubt education pays,” he said.

To illustrate the point, Taylor said using UCG’s average of 487 annual new degree holders and the average increased yearly wage for each educational level according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, those new degree holders have an opportunity to earn more than $1 billion in income over a rolling 15-year period.

‘A COMMUNITY WITH TREMENDOUS UPSIDE’ Step by step, Kwadjo Campbell is working to bring positive change to the Poe Mill neighborhood WORDS BY SARA PEARCE PHOTO BY WILL CROOKS

K

wadjo Campbell wears many hats, to say the least.

He is the president of the Poe Mill Neighborhood Association, chairman of the English department at Legacy Charter School, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, the CEO of his own economic development company, and a former city council member in Charleston. But above all else, he is a dedicated servant to the people of the neighborhood he lives in, Poe Mill.

Campbell was born and raised in downtown eastside Charleston and still works to help the underserved communities there because of his family roots, but Greenville has become his home. “When I first moved to Greenville, I asked a friend to show me the hood, because I wanted to know where it was, and he drove me straight to Poe Mill.

Little did I know, I would end up as president of the Neighborhood Association,” Campbell says with a laugh.

Campbell describes Poe Mill as “a traditional, lived-in community with beautiful mountain views.”

“It’s a very diverse community, with whites, blacks, and Latinos, and it is primarily working class,” he adds. “We have a lot of strong families with good American, core values. And we have our challenges, but we are working to eradicate them. It’s a community with a tremendous upside.”

Campbell has plenty ideas of how to continue improving the Poe Mill area, and he knows exactly what he needs to do to accomplish them. From his personal experience of growing up in a low-income area to his degrees and business experience in community and economic development, he is the perfect person to get the job done. But Campbell realizes that to achieve the big picture, he needs to take it one step at time.

The first step is an upcoming career fair that he organized for the residents of Poe Mill and surrounding areas.

“The main employer will be Greenco, the beverage company,” he says. “They want to hire people from the community, and there will be some forms of prescreening, but

there won’t be background checks. There will be other businesses in the area, like the Chick-fil-A at Cherrydale, and they are just working hard to hire from the community.” The fair will be held at Soteria CDC, 210 Shaw St., on March 2 from 1-5 p.m.

Campbell also recognizes the continued draw of the revamped Poe Mill Skate Park. The project, which has brought in national attention, is currently run by skaters.

Campbell is currently applying for national grants that would go toward additional improvements. He is also hoping for the allocation of funds from the city but knows that can be a waiting game. However, Campbell is confident the skate park will be completed soon. “It’s coming,” he says.

“Oh, it’s definitely coming.”

Campbell is aware of the challenges that exist to complete different projects and initiatives in underserved areas, and he recognizes the need for strong community partnerships to accomplish goals. “The most important thing is to build relationships and partnerships,” he says.

“I couldn’t get any of this done by myself.”

Among Campbell’s big-picture goals is to address home ownership and affordable housing in the Poe Mill neighborhood. “Long term for the community, I want to see more home ownership opportunities for residents that live in that neighborhood,” he says. “I’d like to see more youth activities in the community. I’d like to see us establish more partnerships with employers, and I want to see us get a solid nonprofit or for-profit affordable housing developer that targets the Poe Mill area for housing developments.”

And even though Campbell knows these initiatives will be tough to accomplish, he has a clear plan to implement each and every one.

“One of the biggest issues in this community is the stigma. I mean, Poe Mill has been rough for a long time,” Campbell says. “There is a lot of alcoholism and drug abuse, and we need to combat those things with law en-

forcement but also from the bottom up.” Law enforcement, he adds, “can’t be the only solution but also can’t be absent from the solution.” Campbell says the roots of crime, such as addiction, also need to be addressed.

In the future, Campbell is planning to run for Greenville County Council — assuming his friend Xanthene Norris doesn’t run again. If she does, he wants to support her, because while Campbell believes he would be an ideal candidate, he ultimately just wants the people of his community to have a voice. “It’s about having someone in there to address the issues that are facing poor communities in the county,” he says.

Campbell credits his wife, Rashida Jeffers-Campbell, and four children for inspiring his work in the Poe Mill area. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. She is my partner in everything,” he says of his wife. “We are the two biggest nerds when you put us together, because we love this stuff so much.”

For Campbell, his involvement in revitalizing Poe Mill is shaped both by his past and desire to make a lasting impact on his community. “If you know anything about me, you know that I haven’t always been squeaky. I’ve had run ins with the law; I don’t deny that,” he says. “But I know that I have a certain responsibility, and I use that experience from the hood and triumphing over the obstacles that have been put in my way, by myself and by others. And being where I am now, I feel blessed to try and give it back,” Campbell says.

Campbell realizes that there are many obstacles to overcome going forward, but he is up for whatever challenges that may bring. “The stigma of how people see Poe Mill is an issue,” he says, “but it’s one that we are overcoming day by day, project by project, article by article, news story by news story. Change comes in seeing the value of a community that is fighting for itself.”

Bon Secours dedicates first Habitat home of 2018 Bon Secours St. Francis has dedicated the home that they built with Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County for Brad Allmond and his sons.

The four-month build was completed with the help of Bon Secours St. Francis employees, Habitat volunteers, and Allmond and other homeowners.

The home is the first of 10 homes that Bon Secours St. Francis has committed to building over the next few years in the Sterling community. The funding will benefit two programs, $200,000 in scholarships to the Call Me MISTER program and $150,000 for Emerging Scholars, both of which support initiatives focused on improving educational outcomes for diverse student populations across South Carolina. Clemson’s chief diversity officer and special assistant to the president for inclusive excellence, Lee A. Gill, said that the gift helps continue Clemson’s efforts to pull increasing numbers of students from underserved areas. Wells Fargo’s support is crucial to increasing the pool of diverse educators in the state. Call Me MISTER (Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) was established to increase the number of diverse teachers in South Carolina. The Cancer Society of Greenville County announces a new survivorship program The Cancer Society of Greenville is excited to announce a new educational series called Navigating the Journey. This is a six-week series of classes for cancer patients, their families, and caregivers. The classes will cover a variety of topics that hope to be helpful to newly diagnosed patients as well as those who are already in treatment.

There will also be classes specifically designed for patients who have finished their treatments and who are still experiencing side effects. The classes will address common physical and emotional concerns of cancer survivors, their families, and caregivers. The first three weeks of the class will be repeated each quarter, and the second set of classes will vary with different topics. Patients can attend as many or as few classes as they would like, and the classes do not build on each other.

The first six weeks topics are as follows: Cancer 101: navigating cancer treatment and side effects, navigating nutrition now and after treatment, navigating the emotions of a cancer diagnosis, navigating cancer through integrative therapies, navigating recipes for nutrition and taste, and navigating sexuality during and after cancer treatment (females only). Prohibition is one of the most captivating periods in American history, especially because it is difficult to imagine such laws being passed in the country today. A new traveling exhibit at the Upcountry History Museum, “Spirited: Prohibition in America,” will offer a closer look at each aspect of Prohibition, from the passing of the 18th Amendment to its repeal and everlasting legacy in modern U.S. history and culture. The exhibit features artifacts and interactive elements, including music, videos, and games that challenge one’s knowledge of Prohibition laws.

Prohibition was more than just outlawing the manufacturing, sale, and consumption of alcohol. Advocacy from religious movements was vital to passing the 18th Amendment, and an entire subculture stemmed from rebellion against it, from bootleggers and speakeasies to flappers and gangsters.

“Spirited” examines what changing and passing laws looks like in the United States, says Elizabeth Gunter, director of education and programs at Upcountry History Museum. “[The exhibit shows] the notion of how can a populous have a concept and then push it forward to make it law. It really wasn’t a top-down decision; it was a locally grown, communityorganized rallying people together to kind of say, ‘We want this to change,’” she says. “And that’s how the amendment was passed but also later how it was repealed.

There was this notion of the people’s role in American government, and this exhibit presents it through a topic that is more approachable than some lawmaking in American history.”

Though Prohibition was repealed by the 21st Amendment in 1933, the era continues to influence liquor laws that are still on the books and in effect today. “Especially in South Carolina, ‘blue laws’ have been slowly changing for the last 10 years, like laws on mini-bottles and no alcohol sales on Sundays, which are holdovers from Prohibition,” Gunter says. “It is really interesting that we still kind of live with the impact of a law that was created 100 years ago. It’s also interesting that things are coming into trend now, such as moonshine or speakeasy bars like Vault and Vator, which at the time were out of necessity, and now it’s for our enjoyment.”

For Gunter, the intersection of the women’s movement and Prohibition is one element of the era that she finds fascinating. “I really love the cultural impact of the 1920s and the changing freedom of American youth at that time,” she says.

“There was a lot of experimentation, especially with women’s rights, since Prohibition overlapped so closely with the passing of women’s right to vote, and what’s interesting is that Prohibition gets passed when women did not have the right to vote, but women actually play a major role in the repeal of Prohibition laws. I think that’s interesting to look at women’s roles in this story.”

tion from a national standpoint, Gunter is making sure that visitors are aware of the local effects of Prohibition as well. The museum will host talks and events that focus on the Prohibition era in Greenville, including a Last Speakeasy event on Friday, Jan. 26, that will provide attendees with the experience of a 1920s secret gin joint. A Feb. 3 bus tour that will explore the so-called Dark Corner, a popular moonshine bootlegger of the Carolinas in the 1920s, is already sold out.

The universal themes of “The Phantom of the Opera” have helped the musical stand the test of time SARA PEARCE | STAFF

Hailed as one of the best theater productions of all time, “The Phantom of the Opera” is the longest running show on Broadway. The show’s longevity and popularity can be attributed to its catchy, award-winning songs, an epic love story, and its relatable themes.

The story follows a young soprano, Christine Daaé, who is performing in Paris at the Opera Populaire. Christine becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius living in the labyrinth below the theater. The pair eventually bonds over a love for music and her ability to see past his disfiguration.

“Honestly there are so many reasons it stood the test of time, but the biggest thing is the story. The story is rooted in a place of empathy and love, and it really grabs people,” says Eva Tavares, who plays Christine. “My character sees someone like the Phantom who’s wounded, and then my character tries to help him realize his own worth. He shows her such gentle kindness, so when he starts to become really violent, she comes to him and says, ‘You aren’t that, and you don’t have to be what others label you as.’”

– Eva Tavares epic love story that tells the tale of a beautiful woman in distress and her muddled relationship with a disfigured monster, but there are also themes of empathy, understanding, and the ageold lesson of not to judge a book by its cover. These themes have stood the test of time, just as much as the music and production value of the show, and those qualities are what keep audiences coming back for more.

For Tavares, playing Christine has long been a career goal. She strongly relates to the character, but not so much in the sense of experiencing unrequited love. “I am very similar to Christine in the fact that I love helping people, even when sometimes it doesn’t appear to be the safest or smartest choice, just like how Christine goes into the lair without much regard for the danger that could be lurking,” she says. “But when you have that uninhibited

kindness as Christine does, you don’t really even think about that.”

Tavares disagrees with those who view Christine as a damsel in distress. “It actually takes a lot of courage to be like Christine, and show kindness and empathy in the face of danger and adversity,” she says.

And while Tavares admits the demands of being on tour can be overwhelming, the experience is ultimately worth it. “The tour presents lots of challenges, from health to travel to missing home, but we are a family on tour, and this is an amazing opportunity,” she says.

Centre Stage says its 2018-2019 lineup of plays is “a season for you.” Literally.

“I asked our marketing department to get real input from our audiences so that we could put on the shows that they want to see,” explains Centre Stage executive artistic director Glenda ManWaring. “With so much wonderful theater going on in Greenville, I feel that it’s really important to program for our patrons. So we sent out questionnaires to our patrons and based our season on the responses.”

The result is a season that includes classic musicals, dramas, and comedies, along with a brand-new variety show and, of course, its trademark rock ‘n’ roll revues.

Here’s a look at the Mainstage Series.

“DREAMGIRLS” Sept. 13-29

Based on the ups and downs of such acts as The Supremes and The Shirelles, this big, booming, Tony award-winning musical features powerhouse songs like “I Am Changing” and “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.”

“I’m extremely excited about Dreamgirls,” ManWaring says.

She says she’s long wanted to stage the show and praises its focus on breaking down racial barriers. “It is so relevant right now. It’s a magnificent piece, and it hasn’t been done in our area in a long time.”

“It is going to be a full-blown variety show,” ManWaring says.

“All kinds of acts, all kinds of fun, and, of course, it’s a Christmas theme. We’ve noticed that there’s just a ton of talent in the area, and sometimes we don’t get to see that talent because it doesn’t fit into that particular script, so this way we get to open it up. Some of my fondest memories are seeing those kinds of things at Christmas, where it was a family that came up with their instruments and did this fabulous piece, or a comedy routine or a juggling act or a magic act. Or just anything!

“We haven’t done a ’50s/’60s montage in quite a while, and our patrons have been asking for it and that’s what we’re going to focus on. It should be a lot of fun,” ManWaring says.

Stephen Sondheim’s beloved Tony award-winning blockbuster features everyone’s favorite fairy-tale characters, but with a modern twist. A movie version, starring Meryl Streep, was released in 2014.

“The survey was overwhelming in wanting to see ‘Into the Woods,’ and we were shocked,” ManWaring says. “I think the movie opened up a wider variety of patrons to see that it’s a cool, fun story. And we’re going to be doing some unique things with this show, incorporating the woods into our entire space.”

Once thought obscene and profane, “A Moon for the Misbegotten” is now a beloved classic that examines human vulnerability NEIL SHURLEY | CONTRIBUTOR

When Eugene O’Neill’s “A Moon for the Misbegotten” debuted on Broadway in 1957, it lasted for only 68 performances.

“It did not have a good run,” actor Sean Meehan says. The Greenville Journal recently sat with Meehan and two of his castmates for a discussion of the Warehouse Theatre’s new production of what is now considered a classic. “It was thought of as being obscene and was not very well received.”

“It was considered profane,” actor Ronn Carroll says. “But nothing too shocking for today.”

“Moon” is a sequel of sorts to O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey into Night.” Meehan plays the connecting character, Jim Tyrone. “My character is one of the sons from ‘Long Day’s Journey,’” Meehan says. “This play is sort of years later what has happened to Jim after the events in the first play.”

But even though Jim Tyrone is perhaps the play’s catalyst, the central character is a woman named Josie Hogan, played by Warehouse veteran – and Clemson University professor – Kerrie Seymour. And, Seymour says, it’s her character that gave the original audiences such a shock. “In Josie, you have a woman who’s not afraid to speak her mind in ways that probably didn’t fit into the mold that women should have fit into at that time. She’s a pretty rough gal.”

“She could be kind of raunchy,” Meehan agrees.

Josie lives on a farm with her father, Phil Hogan, played by Carroll. “They’re not well-to-do by any stretch of the imagination, and Josie has a love for Jim Tyrone,” Seymour says. “He’s about to come into some money, and within the play, whether it’s to get their hands on the money, or whether it’s to marry off his daughter, Phil comes up with a bit of an idea to get Jim and Josie together.”

“He’s a bit of a schemer,” Carroll says of his character, “noted throughout the family — and the neighborhood.”

“But also a lighthearted schemer,” Meehan adds. “These people are all close, they’re all friends. It’s not underhanded – there’s a lightness to the scheming.”

“It’s one of the lighter-in-spirit O’Neill plays,” Carroll says.

Appearing along with Seymour, Meehan, and Carroll are actors Matt Reece as neighbor T. Stedman Harder and Christopher Paul Smith as Josie’s brother, Mike.

“There’s also the character of alcoholism, which Jim Tyrone and all his family suffer from,” Meehan says. “Not only is Josie a hard, farm-working woman, but she’s also a woman who lives with four men who are also all drunks. Alcoholism is always pretty prominent in O’Neill’s plays. I think it weighs on everything.”

New York-based Meehan says the production also serves as a reunion of sorts. “There are four of us involved in this production who knew each other 20 years ago,” he explains. “Kerrie was in the year below me in my graduate program at Trinity Repertory Company. Mark Sutch, the director, was in my class, so I spent three years working with him. And the artistic director of the Warehouse, Mike Sablone, was a Trinity Rep person as well.”

“The four of us sort of grew up together,” Seymour says.

Grad school was also the time Seymour first saw a production of “Moon.” “I just remember thinking, ‘Well, I’d like to do that some day,’” she says. “It’s a fun, hard, challenging play.”

“And it’s Josie’s play, really,” Carroll says. “She’s in every scene.”

“I read an article that says it’s Jim Tyrone’s play, because he has a big monologue at the end,” Meehan says. “But it’s really Josie’s play. She’s the one who goes through some event or catharsis or change. That monologue isn’t truly a monologue for Jim Tyrone; it’s a monologue to affect Josie’s character.”

Seymour agrees. “It’s through her time with Jim that Josie sort of sets aside the act that she puts on, the lies that she tells about herself, and starts to tell the truth,” she says.

“These people do struggle a lot with who they are,” Meehan says.

“And,” Carroll adds, “there’s a lot of love for one another.”

For Sablone, the play is about vulnerability. “For my first season here at the Warehouse, I really wanted to focus on what it’s like when people actually talk to each other openly and honestly,” he says. “The theater should be a safe space for these kinds of conversations.”

“It’s a wonderful piece,” Carroll says, “and I think it should be a great production.”

He definitely has the temperament for it, and he had a lot to offer. And he was up for it.”

In the workshop, which will take place the day after the performance, the Sharps and Harris will listen to the attendees’ songs-inprogress and offer advice on how they could proceed. Sharp says that the workshops have been just as valuable for her as they have for the people she’s advising.

“I always learn something about my own writing when I need to look at someone else’s,” she says. “When I really have to break it down and analyze why is this not working as well as it could and why is this working well, it forces me to analyze that and apply it to my writing. And I get to see this immediate result. My favorite thing, and this has happened four or five times, is when we tell the person who wrote it something to add or think about, and they’re like, ‘YES!’ They get all excited about it, and I feed off that excitement. When you’ve been writing songs for 25 years, it’s nice to get that excitement.”

Despite the connection she has with her songs, Sharp says it’s never been difficult for her to hand them over to someone else to record. “I’m never protective of the song,” she says. “But I’ve also been lucky in that the artists who record my songs don’t typically want to change them.

They’re not rewriting lyrics or a melody.”

Which brings us to a question Sharp was a bit reluctant to answer: Does she have a favorite cover of one of her songs?

“Well,” she says after long pause, “the Dixie Chicks sang the hell out of ‘Home.’ But the one that gets me in the gut is Bonnie doing ‘The Bed I Made.’ It’s like a torch song, and she SLAYS it. I listen to that song and I completely forget that I had anything to do with it.”

The combined songwriting catalog of Randy Sharp, Maia Sharp, and David Ryan Harris, the three performers at the upcoming in-the-round show at the Peace Center’s Genevieve Theatre, has been picked over by some legendary artists.

Maia Sharp, who began the combination performance/songwriting workshop series with singer Edwin McCain last year, co-wrote the Dixie Chicks’ hit “Home” with Randy, her father, along with tracks for Trisha Yearwood, Bonnie Raitt, and Keb’ Mo’, among many others. Randy has had his songs performed by Alabama, Patti Loveless, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, and Linda Ronstadt. And Harris, as a songwriter, guitarist, and singer, has worked with everyone from Trombone Shorty to John Mayer.

So those in audience at the show this weekend will doubtless recognize some tunes. But in Maia Sharp’s case, the songs that some of these artists picked were never, ever the ones she intended for them to.

“Trying to write specifically for something has never worked for me,” she says with a laugh. “When I would try to specifically write for an artist, that song would never land with that artist. When I did have a song land, it was something I didn’t expect that they would like.”

Perhaps the best example of this is Bonnie Raitt, who has covered multiple Sharp songs, and with whom Sharp has developed a friendship over the years. “I had a whole Bonnie Raitt folder full of songs that I thought they were just no-brainers,” she says. “They were all such Bonnie Raitt songs. And she didn’t cut ANY of those songs. She cut three others that I never would’ve thought of. So I’ve decided that the key for me is to write a song that I feel a connection to, and that basic human response is something that hopefully another artist will share.”

McCain was another of Sharp’s collaborators and friends, and it was through him that Sharp began her performance/songwriting workshops at the Peace Center.

The first time Linsey Read drove on a Monster Jam course, she was in a slightly modified Ford Ranger.

It was in El Paso, Texas, Read’s hometown. During Monster Jam’s annual stop there, some locals were able to race their street-legal trucks on the Monster Jam track. Read finished milliseconds behind the winner.

After the second year Read participated, Lee O’Donnell, who drives the VP Fuel’s Mad Scientist truck, asked her if she’d like to be a Monster Jam driver.

“I was at the right place at the right time,” she said. “I actually thought it was a joke. I thought there was no way and that I was dreaming. I said yes, and they

sent me out to test at Digger’s Dungeon in North Carolina [home of the Grave Digger].”

Next came Monster Jam University, where she learned how to drive one of the 10,000-pound, 1,600-horsepower trucks.

She started competing in 2016 and was the only female driver on the tour.

“It was intimidating at first, but they’re really great,” she says. “I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t willing to share a word of advice or help calm nerves before a show. It’s like being a part of a big family. They just don’t want to be beat by a girl.”

Read is one of four female drivers who drives the Scooby Doo truck. She’ll be behind the wheel when Monster Jam makes its stop in Greenville at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena this weekend.

Each year, like many community theaters, Pelzer’s Mill Town Players comes up with a concert-style revue that’s light on dialogue and plot and heavy on music. And we don’t mean standards by Cole Porter or Rodgers and Hammerstein, either. These shows typically combine classic ‘60s, ‘70s, or ‘80s rock into a long string of favorites, typically grouped into a theme like piano-based songs (as in Centre Stage’s recent production, Rockin’ the Keys) or, in the case of the Mill Town Players’ new show, California Dreamin’, ’60s surf rock and soul classics.

California Dreamin’, which opens on Friday and runs through Feb. 18, is a nonstop collection of classics that starts with hits by The Beach Boys, moves through chestnuts by The Byrds, The Monkees, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, and ends up at Mr. Dynamite himself, James Brown. The performance will feature six vocalists and a five-piece live band, and though there’s no plot to follow, there’s

definitely a thread through the material.

“We were originally thinking about The Beach Boys,” says the Players’ executive artistic director, Will Ragland, “and then it expanded into thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to put on a show during the coldest part of the year that was all about the beach and the West Coast and songs from that era?’”

That was the kernel of a setlist developed by Ragland, director and choreographer Kimberlee Ferreira, and musical director Joshua Morton.

“It starts out with a Beach Boys medley, then continues into that surf-rock sound from the West Coast,” Ragland says. “All the songs we’ve chosen for that section are by bands from within the state of California. So the first half deals with fun in the sun. Then it begins to deal with more serious things, with songs by The Monkees and The Byrds into CCR, Three Dog Night, and then James Brown towards the end. What I like about it is that it’s not just about being able to hear this music live; you get a slice of musical history, so to speak.”

In order to create the best possible running order for the show, Ragland, Ferreira,

and Morton each came to the table with their own setlists and narrowed down the song selection.

“We discussed the strengths and weaknesses of each song,” Ragland says. “Some really strong songs had to be left out, but we put together what we thought was a great list. You have to be very careful when you do that, because you want to take the audience on a musical journey. It has to start out in one place and lead you somewhere else.”

Once the list was finalized, the rehearsal process was surprisingly short, given the amount of music, lyrics, and choreography that the vocalists, two Mill Town veterans and four newcomers, had to memorize. All in all, Ragland estimates it took about six to eight weeks.

“Because we are a community theater, we have to work around our actors’ schedules,” he says. “First, they learned the music, then the choreography, and then we added the important component of the band. Then we bring it all together with set design, costumes, and sound.”

It might sound like a daunting task be-

cause productions of this type often take months to prepare. But Ragland was confident in his singers and his band. “Fortunately the Upstate is full of talent, and we have friends we can invite to craft a team that’s perfect for what we want to accomplish,” he says. “The band is a group that we’ve worked with for so long that they’ve almost become our house band. They’ve got great chemistry.”

As for future shows, Ragland says he hopes to see more modern rock and pop music included as time goes by. “One day, when I’m older, I hope to have a music revue that features grunge music,” he says with a laugh. “Bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. That would be awesome.”

SAKE TO ME OTTO Izakaya opens in West End’s ballpark district WORDS & PHOTO BY STEPHANIE BURNETTE Peter Lieu waited years for the right opportunity to bring a restaurant concept downtown, and it happened last week. The second location of OTTO Izakaya opened in the ballpark district of the West End with its hyperfresh sushi, noodle dishes, and handcut fries replacing a long residence by Breakwater Restaurant & Bar at 802 S. Main St. Alongside his wife, Frances, and extended family, Lieu opened Lieu’s Chinese Bistro in 2003, steps off Woodruff Road. Lieu took a stab at the fusion market five years later with a sizable new-build restaurant he named Azia, but was hurt by the imminent recession. Azia folded and Lieu found a way to hold onto the property (alongside the Whole Foods Shopping Center), leasing it to the likes of J. Peters and other franchise restaurants, believing the time would come for diners to champion an Asian fusion menu.

Eighteen months ago, he decided the market was ready, and after an extensive interior upfit, he deemed the new concept an izakaya, a Japanese term for a sake bar known for great snacks and premium bar food.

Greenville has embraced OTTO Izakaya with its mouthful of a name and funny hours.

Its lettered walls with quippy phrases, like “Don’t Be Hangry,” tend to show up often on social media. And like the original, OTTO downtown opens at 4 p.m. and closes around 2 a.m., offering two happy hours with traditional drink specials from 4-7 p.m. and BOGO sushi starting at 10 p.m.

The footprint is significantly smaller; with just 100 seats, it’s a fraction of the size of the original location and has no private dining options. But, Lieu believes the concept shines through at both locales, which are open seven days a week.

“An izakaya is a place to find community, to have a nice drink and high-quality dishes.

energy had to be right,” Lieu says. “I walked in and it looked nothing like the other restaurants, but I could see all our downtown diners here. I knew it was right from the beginning.”

Ryan Robertson of SVN Blackstream LLC showed Lieu the West End vacancy. Robertson focuses on hospitality real estate and was a believer in the future growth of the neighborhood. He says the ballpark district is in “extreme transition” with a new hotel and exploding multifamily housing coming to the market in the next three quarters. “It was great timing for OTTO Izakaya to get into the district and make their presence known,” Robertson says. “Greenville has made the cultural change toward urban living, and that means demand for high-quality food and beverage options within walking distance.”

Lieu’s nephew and business partner, Doug Yi, plans to split responsibilities managing the two locations. Both are well known at OTTO Izakaya on Market Point Drive and have brought part of their team downtown to train the new staff. The menu is identical, and sake selections will feature upwards of 30 pours of cold sake by the glass or single-serve bottles, as well as a fully stocked premium bar.

If you’ve never been to OTTO Izakaya, it’s worth ordering the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice for an appetizer (and then plan to order one more) as well as the Crunchy Rainbow Pressed Sushi. Unlike any other roll in the region, it features shrimp crunch mixed into the sushi rice and then pressed into a box mold and topped with five fish, avocado, and two sauces. The french fries with spicy izakaya dipping sauce are noteworthy, as well.

The concept of a Drumnado performance is a simple one. Three drummers — in this case, Jared Burger from Greenville’s Hugger Mugger, Troy Wolf of Atlanta’s MammaBear, and Brandon Wooten — surround Tom Goss, guitarist for another Greenville band, S**t Karate, and then the four musicians unleash some serious improvised thunder.

We’ve done upside-down guitar solos. I just kind of felt like I was running out of ideas. So I thought, ‘I’ll do a show with three drummers.’ And it just kind of took on a life of its own.”

Goss says there are often times during a Drumnado performance where he feels more like an impressed spectator than a participant. “These guys are amazing,” he says. “I can throw anything at them, and they just feed off each other. Love is one of the most venerable topics of song; whether it’s a twominute pop ditty or a multi-movement classical symphony, matters of the heart have moved people to compose music for centuries. The Greenville Symphony Orchestra’s “Love Songs” program takes on some of the most beautiful classical music ever written around this

topic by some of the greatest composers in history.

The show, conducted as always by Maestro Edvard Tchivzhel, will begin with two pieces

by Tchaikovsky: “Romeo and Juliet Overture – Fantasy” and “Francesca da Rimini, op.

32.” The former was finished in 1880 but didn’t premiere until nearly six years later, while the latter, often referred to as a symphonic poem, was composed relatively quickly (over three weeks) in 1876.
