PROJECT: Te Hikoi Ararewa (Wainuiomata Shared Pathway) Stage One and Stage Two CONTRACTOR: Downer NZ CLIENT: Hutt City Council (HCC) VALUE: $12.9m
Downer was awarded the contract for Stage 1 of the Wainuiomata Shared Pathway in 2017.
The project scope was to construct and deliver a 4-kilometre shared pathway that was 4m wide (3m in constrained areas) alongside the Wainuiomata Hill Road from Rishworth Street to Pukeatua Bridge. This included widening the existing footpaths on Gracefield Road and Bell Road South. Stage 2 was to extend the pathway from the Summit at Pukeatua Bridge towards Wainuiomata, ending at Park Way. This was a $12.9 million project, with Stage 1 being delivered through a successful tender and Stage 2 being secured by offering significant redesign savings to HCC. The design goal forms part of a wider strategic network with future linkages to the Beltway Cycleway (which began construction in July 2020), the Eastern Bay shared Path and the CBD. The overarching goal is improved safety, improved connectivity and increased active lifestyle and recreational choices.
