y first golf trip was a 15-minute car ride to a local miniature golf center where I proceeded to select a putter along with my choice of a red, green or yellow golf ball before sashaying to the first of the 18 manicured greens composed entirely of felt. Thus, is my immersion into the world of golf.

Although golf is not a nucleotide within my DNA, I am cognizant it holds significant implications for health. While Evan Che Stefanik’s piece, Fore Her Future, is centered on Mia Hammond’s accomplishments, my thoughts turned to the many benefits this great sport brings to well-being.

Thus my segue to the many ways golf improves physical, social and mental health.

Physical benefits Golf plays a significant role in many of the body’s systems. The cardiovascular system is impacted significantly.

Playing 18 holes can result in walking seven miles, assuming a golf cart is not used. This aerobic workout helps control blood pressure and improve heart function. The muscular-skeletal system is positively impacted since the body parts in this system are forced to move in many ways such as required to swing a golf club.

Walking 18 holes strengthens the muscles and bones in the legs and joints while also improving flexibility.

Golf also has a positive impact on metabolism. The movement required during a round of golf results into a high expenditure of calories. Up to 600 calories can be burned in a round of golf since as many as 10,000-14,000 steps may be taken. The result can positively impact blood sugar levels as well as reduce cholesterol levels.

When all of the aforementioned is taken into account, the impact on chronic health problems can be significant. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes may be reduced. There is also data to indicate that the risk of developing cancer can be reduced.

Mental and social benefits Playing golf can reduce stress. Cortisol levels can be reduced and thus promote a sense of calm. Some golfers may have an opposing view since the frustration of not sinking a putt can cause one to become upset. However, golf does help one escape from the pressures at hand and create a sense of calm.

For many golfers, the need to focus on the task at hand can promote a high level of concentration and thus promote mindfulness. Absorbing one’s self in the surrounding beauty of a golf course is soothing.

There is some thinking that cognitive function is improved due to the fact that a golfer needs to strategize how to play a hole and apply problem solving skills. This may play a role in delaying the onset of dementia.

Golf also promotes social interaction which is important for promoting well-being. Research indicates that increased socialization enhances one’s ability to live longer and healthier.

For people of all ages, golf can be a health-enhancing sport. Get ready to tee off.

A New Way Through New Albany The Market Street Extension

ith the Market Street Extension substantially complete, New Albany unveils one of the most transformative infrastructure projects in its modern history.

Far more than just a roadway, the new extension reflects years of planning to improve traffic flow, enhance resident amenities and create a more connected, walkable Village Center.

A historic step forward For decades, drivers moving between US-62 and State Route 605 had little choice but to pass directly through New Albany’s Village Center. Close-spaced traffic signals, high vehicle volume and steady flows of commercial trucks created congestion that affected residents, businesses and New Albany-Plain Local Schools. During peak hours, school administrators shared concerns about buses stuck in traffic or heavy trucks traveling close to the school campus.

“We are already experiencing the early benefits of the Market Street Extension, from improved bus movement to a safer pedestrian environment for our students,” says Superintendent Michael Sawyers.

“This project reflects what is possible when a community plans with intention and puts children at the center of its decisions. It is an investment that will serve our schools well for years to come.”

By creating a more direct connection between US-62 and SR-605, the project provides a true alternative route for drivers with no downtown destination. This splits traffic volume, allows for improved signal timing and relieves Village Center pressure. It also diverts large trucks away from the school campus, enhancing pedestrian safety for all.

City officials also believe the improvement will support continued growth of local destinations as safe sidewalks, crossings and less congestion often contribute to a more inviting environment for shoppers, diners and visitors alike.

Amenities blend beauty and purpose One of the most exciting components of the Market Street Extension is the addition of natural amenities that blend beauty and function. The centerpiece is a new water feature, which doubles as a stormwater detention basin and sce-

Designed to look natural, the basin includes surrounding wetland areas that will mature over time, helping provide sustainable waterquality treatment.

The surrounding landscape includes more than 550 newly planted trees, naturalized park space and new paved pathways that expand the leisure trail network, facilitating access to New Albany’s green space from Taylor Farm Park to the west and through Rose Run Park and eventually Rose Run Park Phase II. A wooden overlook provides an up-close view of the water feature, creating a peaceful destination for relaxing and enjoying nature. The improvements also strengthen pedestrian connectivity from Third Street to the Windsor neighborhood and Market Square – making it easier than ever to walk or bike into the Village Center.

Funding and partnerships make progress possible The project was made possible through a collaboration with The New Albany Company, whose land donation, along with financial support and involvement in planning and construction, helped accelerate the project.

The project’s total cost is nearly $17 million. The City received a $244,000 grant and a $756,000 loan from the Ohio Public Works Commission, with the remaining

funds coming from the City’s capital improvement fund, and a generous contribution from The New Albany Company.

“The Ohio Public Works Commission has been an outstanding partner for the City of New Albany throughout the Market Street Extension project,” says City Manager Joe Stefanov. “The land acquisition and design phases were complex and time-consuming, but OPWC’s support helped us navigate those challenges effectively.”

Construction moved faster than planned. A three-month closure of SR605, while inconvenient, cut five months off the total timeline, reducing what was originally a two-year project to less than 18 months.

“Given the location and how disruptive construction can be, we tried to fasttrack as much as possible,” City Engineer Justin Wilkinson says. “I worked in construction. It’s messy, but the end result is what matters, and here, we’re ending with something that will improve life for decades to come.”

With final landscaping updates set for early spring of 2026, the Market Street Extension will soon be fully woven into the fabric of the community. Even now, the impact is clear – connecting neighborhoods, easing travel, expanding walkability and strengthening the heart of the Village Center. More than just a new road, it’s an investment that moves New Albany forward.

Stirring Up Goodness at Souper Supper

S

ouper Supper is back for 2026 – and yes, it’s still the warmest, coziest and most delicious night in New Albany. Hosted by the City’s IDEA Implementation Panel (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility), this annual fundraiser brings families, neighbors and lots of soup together to support the New Albany Food Pantry.

“This is always one of my favorite New Albany events. Tons of people show up to mix and mingle, and sample the many soups provided,” says New Albany Councilwoman Marlene Brisk.

This year’s event is Feb 10, from 6-8 p.m. at the Philip Heit Center for Healthy New Albany, and if history is any indication, it will once again serve up the perfect blend of flavor, fun and community spirit.

The concept is simple: unlimited soup, bread and dessert. The impact? Far greater.

Attendees can sample an array of soups created by local cooks and then cast their

vote in the friendly competition for the “Best Soup Maker” title. From spicy to savory, creamy to creative, there’s truly something for everyone.

“Our family loves Souper Supper,” says Councilwoman Andrea Wiltrout. “Each pot of soup represents the heart of someone’s home, and having a warm night together without cooking in the middle of winter is such a treat.”

Souper Supper has quickly become a tradition that goes far beyond the ladle.

In 2024, the event featured cooks and guests speaking 11 different languages.

Last year, seven languages filled the room along with 200 people and the aroma of 18 different homemade soups, proving that New Albany does show up – especially when soup is involved.

“I really believe what makes the soups so delicious is that they are all a labor of love,” says Brisk. “They are often family recipes, handed down through generations, reflecting the heritage of the volunteers that make them, and the pride in their presentation shines through.”

While the atmosphere is lively, the purpose remains heartfelt: raising funds for the food pantry to support neighbors facing food insecurity. The event is free to attend, but guests are encouraged to make a suggested $5

donation, with every single dollar going directly to the local pantry.

Community at Heart New Albany school alum returns to give back to the community

F

rom a young age, Amanda Miller Bartlome had a knack for bridging gaps.

Moving from Michigan to New Albany just before seventh grade, she quickly built connections on basketball courts, soccer fields and in the classroom.

Those early experiences shaped not only her personal life but also her devotion to community, a commitment she now channels in her role as Meta’s Community Development Regional Manager, bridging technology and local needs to create meaningful change in the region.

The early years Although she was born in Cincinnati, the majority of Miller Bartlome’s childhood was spent in Michigan. When she was 9, her mother, Melissa, got a job in Columbus. Her mother spent about a year-and-a-half commuting to-and-from Columbus to Michigan until they decided to relocate permanently just before Miller Bartlome entered seventh grade.

Although she didn’t know anyone, Miller Bartlome also did not shy away from finding her place. After arriving in New Albany on the first day in her new home, she was in basketball clothes and on the court at AAU practice.

“I met a ton of my best friends that way.

One of my first friends that I met the first night in New Albany stood at my wedding,” Miller Bartlome says. “I think that’s really a testament to what New Albany is in the community. There was never a point in time when I didn’t feel welcomed.”

She immediately felt embraced through the New Albany community, and while she built friendships on the basketball court and soccer field, she developed her career ambitions in the classroom. Classes such as Modern European History and

Ethics were formative in her decision to study political science. “(The teachers) are unapologetic about how focused they are on student success, and I felt that on day one,” Miller Bartlome says. “The teachers, the curriculum, just the level of engagement that everybody has in your education shows, and you feel it.”

In August of 2016, she had spinal surgery due to scoliosis. Although missing most of the first semester of her junior year was less than ideal, the school worked to ensure she stayed up to date with classes, with a teacher coming to bring assignments each week.

Finding a path After graduating from New Albany High School, she ventured back up north and attended Michigan State University.

Miller Bartlome initially started her college career studying political science with the intention of attending law school, but when she took an introductory course in public policy, where she studied the Flint water crisis, her goals took a new form.

While she still earned her bachelor’s degree in political science, with a minor in German, she also completed her master’s degree in public policy.

After graduation, Miller Bartlome took a job as a legislative affairs and communications specialist at Scofes & Associates Consulting, a Lansing-based government affairs firm, where she worked for about a year and a half. However, she felt a pull back to Ohio, where her family was living. In May of 2020, she landed a job with AT&T, where she worked on the legislative affairs team and built integral skills to the work she does today.

lationships… and how important that is,” Miller Bartlome says. “Anyone can start a relationship, but the ability to make sure that it is authentic and genuine is very key to me.”

Following her time at AT&T, she briefly worked as a business development director for Orange Barrel Media. Although she found the work fulfilling, she missed the community engagement she had grown to love. During this period, her personal life was also evolving; she became engaged to her now-husband, Zach. Not long after, a role at Meta opened up that was directly focused on the local connection she had been missing. She applied, and in December 2024, she was offered the job.

An ear for the community As Community Development Regional Manager, Miller Bartlome’s role is to serve as a resource to her community, acting as a bridge between Meta and the communities in which it operates.

Since New Albany is where one of two Meta data centers are located, with another under construction in Middleton Township near Bowling Green, New Albany is a focal point for Meta’s community outreach. Miller Bartlome’s role focuses heavily on relationship-building, outreach and ensuring Meta

shows up as a responsible, engaged corporate partner in the local region.

A large part of that comes from Meta’s Data Center Community Action Grants.

Through this program, Meta provides financial resources to schools, registered nonprofits and community partners located near data centers.

“This program funds short term, high impact projects that are addressing critical community needs of any eligible nonprofit or local school that is driving impact in (Franklin and Licking County),” Miller Bartlome says.

Grants are awarded to organizations that fit the following criteria: applying tech solutions to address community needs, helping individuals create sustainable and connected communities and expanding access to high-quality STEAM learning opportunities.

Since 2020, New Albany’s program has awarded more than $1.2 million in grants.

A Day in the Life Although Miller Bartlome’s work day is never the same, she finds consistency in her 5-9’s before and after her 9-5. In the mornings, she loves to attend pilates classes at Butcher Shop Fitness. She and her husband also love to spend time with their mini golden doodle, Logan.

In 2025, grants were awarded to eight organizations, including three local recipients.

The Jeanne B. McCoy Community Center for the Arts was selected to provide funding for educational arts programming, New Albany Neighborhood Bridges received funds to supply TI-84 graphing calculators and resources for students in need, and New Albany-Plain Local Schools was awarded funding for an outdoor learning classroom in the Early Learning Center. Miller Bartlome says she feels particularly proud of the partnership with New Albany-Plain Local Schools, as an alum.

“Getting to support the outdoor learning classroom is awesome. I was able to take environmental science in high school

at New Albany, and we were outside all the time,” she says. “You can go outside while still learning important things about the environment and science.”

Beyond Data Center Community Action Grants, Miller Bartlome assists in additional funding for organic partnerships that form throughout the year. For example, Meta’s funding supports the creation of Ohio State’s new STEM Instruction Innovation Hub, an active-learning classroom designed to help introductory STEM students succeed through collaborative, student-centered teaching spaces.

Additionally, she frequently works with the New Albany Community Foundation, which has been a key partner since the data center’s inception.

Miller Bartlome’s Inspirations Miller Bartlome’s strong work ethic is evident, but she didn’t learn this on her own. She credits her mother, Melissa, as being a strong role model throughout her childhood.

She was once a single mother raising her two older children, Brendon and Elizabeth Lally, with the support of their father, who remains an important and present part of their family to this day.

“I grew up watching how hard my mother worked,” Miller Bartlome says. “I always appreciated and admired growing up with a strong female figure.”

She also credits her older sister, Elizabeth, as being a strong mentor.

“I’ve learned from my sister to be a lot more direct, and she got that from my mom,” Miller Bartlome says.

Committed to connection Miller Bartlome is committed to being more than a familiar face. She immerses herself in the community, listening, learning and forming genuine connections.

She’s present at everything from fundraisers to strategy meetings, keeping her role hands-on and engaged in every project.

“My sole focus is listening to the community,” Miller Bartlome says. “And there’s no better way to learn about our community and what is important here in Franklin and Licking Counties than from those who are doing the good work here every day.”

At just 29, Miller Bartlome has already found meaningful ways to give back to the community that shaped her. She does this through means ranging from forming connections and feeding off of the energy of others, to crafts she has mastered. This year, she will be on the New Albany Chamber of Commerce Board of Trustees, a role that allows her foster new relationships while gaining a deeper understanding of local needs and growth opportunities.

At the heart of her work is a set of values she carries with her every day, shaping how she connects with others and navigates her growing role in the community.

“Be genuine, be authentic, be empathetic,” Miller Bartlome says. “I try very hard to bring that to any conversation, any room, no matter the circumstance.”

The Gummy Returns Pharmavite has brought more to New Albany than just its signature gummy vitamins

If you’re part of that 74 percent, there’s every possibility that the gummy vitamins you take are made right here in New Albany. And as the market for them continues to expand – Fortune Business Insights estimates the market was about $11.75 16

billion globally in 2025, and will more than double in size in the next few years, reaching $27.57 billion by 2032 – many of the innovations in the world of gummy vitamins might just come from right here in New Albany, too.

New Albany’s sudden significance in the gummy supplement marketplace follows the 2025 opening of Pharmavite’s manufacturing, research and development facility on Jug Street. The vitamin and supplement

company is probably best known for its Nature Made brand, one of the leading brands in gummy vitamins.

Pharmavite’s business makes it a natural fit for a health-focused community such as New Albany. The company was attracted to central Ohio because of its growing reputation as a “national hub for science, innovation and technology, with an educated and growing talent pool,” says Brian Vogel, director of plant operations. www.healthynewalbanymagazine.com

New Albany city officials have credited the gradual expansion of the Health and Life Sciences cluster in the New Albany International Business Park as being a key factor as well.

“We also recognize the strength of public and private partnerships, and have experienced firsthand how the collective support and camaraderie between government and state entities, local businesses and philanthropic organizations moves this community forward in a way that is unique to the area,” Vogel says.

The 225,000-square-foot, $250 million production facility opened its doors this past May, having broken ground in 2023, adding about 225 jobs to the region.

“In addition to complementing current production … the state-of-the-art New Albany facility will also be home to Pharmavite’s Gummies Innovation Center of Excellence, focused on product research and development, as well as a dedicated research and development team to help innovate existing products and create future offerings,” Vogel says.

The facility has thus far been focused primarily on increasing production of gummies, Vogel says, but is transitioning to innovation operations heading into 2026. Results of the company’s prior innovation initiatives have included its Zero Sugar Gummies and Advanced Multis vitamin lines.

“In today’s world, as illustrated by consumers’ ever-evolving vitamin and supplement routines, moving the category forward requires agility and the understanding that we need to continuously test, learn, adapt and grow to support our consumers,” he says.

The company aims to do more for residents of New Albany, and central Ohio in general, than just make vitamins for them. Pharmavite prioritizes being part of the communities in which it operates, Vogel says, and aims to make a positive impact here via volunteering, sponsorships and more.

“All new hires volunteer in the local community during their first week of employment, offering each team member the opportunity to engage with local philanthropic partners,” he says.

Pharmavite has fielded a team for Pelotonia since 2023, and has also sponsored the ride as a Notable Funding Partner, providing operational support so that 100 percent of money raised for the event can go to research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital. Over the past three years, the Pharmavite Pelotonia team has raised almost $30,000, and the company also sponsored a snack and water station along the route this past year.

“They’re very much a people-first organization,” says Pelotonia CEO Joe Apgar.

Pharmavite reached out to Pelotonia to be part of the event even before its facility broke ground in New Albany, Apgar says, wanting to be involved in the community and provide volunteer support.

“It’s been very cool, from my vantage point, to see the organization get involved in a very authentic way,” Apgar says.

Other leaders around the city have expressed to Apgar just how impressed they are by Pharmavite’s immediate commitment to New Albany and its residents, he says, pointing to the company as a great example of how the local business community support organizations such as Pelotonia.

“For an organization to come from out of town and immediately support us in the way they did is really validating to the community that we’re doing good work, that we’re funding great science,” says Apgar.

The company has also worked with Healthy New Albany in a number of capacities, including serving as a Supporting Sponsor for the New Albany Walking Classic starting in 2023. Pharmavite has also utilized the organization’s Wellness Works program to arrange chair massages for employees, and has held a food drive in connection with Hunger Action Month programming.

Other New Albany-area organizations to which Pharmavite team members have contributed their time and effort include The Garden for All at All Saints Episcopal Church, which donates produce to such charities as the New Albany Food Pantry and Gahanna Residents in Need, and Dreams on Horseback, a Jefferson Township-based nonprofit dedicated to horse-partnered learning.

While strides are being made in psychedelic research, dosage guidance and other safety precautions lag behind – increasing the chance of users finding themselves in distress or emergency situations in which first responders and healthcare professionals lack proper training. The PEACE program aims to address this, closing the risk gap by educating Ohio’s professionals.

Inside the program Developed and administered by the CPDRE and funded by a $400,000 SOAR Innovation grant from the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health (ODBH), the PEACE program will equip more than 127,000 Ohio professionals with psychedelic-informed skills, including crisis triage and referral guidance to healthcare providers specially trained in psychedelic harm reduction.

“We want to arm our first responder and behavioral health workforce with knowledge about how to support someone’s challenging psychedelic experience in a way that’s going to be helpful, not increase risk or harm,” says Armstrong. www.healthynewalbanymagazine.com

New FDA-approved dry eye treatments, as well as recommendations from a local optometrist

While one of these new treatments may work best for you, Riccio offers some tried-and-true staples that have withstood time and varying levels of dry eyes to help with tear production and eye health.

O

ne of the most common ocular surface diseases, dry eye disease, affects millions of people across the U.S. and internationally, according to the National Eye Institute.

Several factors play into a person’s likelihood of being afflicted including age, health status and medication regiment.

In particular, people over the age of 50, those with chronic health conditions and people who take certain medications are more likely to develop the disease.

With symptoms ranging from burning and stinging to more extreme symptoms such as eye pressure and blurry vision, dry eye continues to be studied with the hope of finding more treatments.

The past few years have seen many new treatments for dry eye come to the market, including a few recent FDA approvals in 2025.

No tears left to cry In many cases, dry eye can be caused by a disruption in the eye’s natural tear production process, whether by inflammation and blockages that affect the eye’s ability to produce the different tear layers or due to parts of the eye not performing its job properly.

From different nerve receptors to glands, there are many possible areas and causes to engage and treat, sometimes leading to a trial-and-error approach to determine what can provide eye relief.

drops to help with eye moisture, as well as punctal plugs and gels to help with tear flow. Therapies such as thermal pulsation therapy, LipiFlow, to intense pulsed light therapy, OptiLight, have also been used to help with oil buildup and inflammation blocking natural tear production.

New treatments to try Whether people are faced with an insufficient amount of tears or an imbalanced composition of them, new treatments continue to evolve and engage as well as stimulate different areas of the tear production process to alleviate dry eye and its symptoms.

One new treatment, Tryptyr, was approved by the FDA in May 2025 as a neuromodulator eye drop that interacts with TRPM8 receptors on the eye’s surface to trigger natural tear production.

By engaging with the TRPM8 receptors, Tryptyr can help simulate the sensations of tear evaporation for engaging the process of creating tears to restore moisture in the eyes.

As the company that acquired Tryptyr, Alcon, has reported so far, up to four times more patients have achieved at least a 10-millimeter increase in natural tear production in as early as one day with this methodology.

Bausch and Lomb’s Miebo is another recent dry eye prescription eye drop that was approved by the FDA in 2023, and it was the first medication to address meibomian gland dysfunction.

1. Implement the practice of safely scrubbing your eyelids close to your lashes every morning and night.

2. Use artificial tears – for fewer times a day, eye drops with preservatives should suffice, but consider preservative-free drops if you use them more frequently.

3. Use an in-room humidifier.

4. Use a Bruder mask, a warm compress that helps open pores.

For those who don’t have dry eye, the eyelid scrubbing method can still be beneficial for promoting eye health and preventing the development of dry eye.

While technology has not been labeled as a cause of dry eye, Dr. Karen Riccio acknowledges that staring at a screen for long periods of time leads to blinking less, which in turn can result in patients noticing more of their dry eye symptoms. She has seen more young patients come in with dry eye symptoms, and predicts that they likely notice the symptoms because of extended screentime.

To combat this, she recommends taking screen breaks every 10 minutes – whether from your phone, tablet, computer or television – as a simple shift to help rest and alleviate your eyes.

The meibomian gland, located near the eyelids, helps produce the oils needed for tears. The correlated dysfunction disrupts oil production and causes tears to evaporate too quickly due to the lack of healthy oils. The Miebo eye drops are designed to create a protective layer across the eye to help stabilize tears and minimize quick evaporation, leading to decreased eye dryness.

Local optometrist Dr. Karen Riccio has practiced at Eye Designs for nearly 30 years and has started offering Miebo to patients. Though the treatment is newer, Riccio has had a few patients who have benefited from using the eyedrops.

“My patients who have taken it say it’s the best, that ‘It’s not perfect, but it’s the best of anything I’ve tried so far,’” she says.

New dry eye treatments don’t stop there.

VEVYE by Harrow and Reproxalap by Aldeyra are two new drops targeting two different causes of inflammation.

VEVYE is a topical, water-free antiinflammatory with cyclosporine that was given FDA approval in 2023 and seeks to treat inflammation blocking tear production. Likewise, Reproxalap targets the inflammation of dry eye and allergic conjunctivitis by regulating molecules associated with inflammation; however, this prescription is still under its resubmitted New Drug Application to the FDA in May 2025.

Lacripep, which has completed Phase 2 trials, is one aimed to address stinging and burning sensations by stimulating the lacrimal gland to produce tears, oil and mucin, similar to the nasal spray Tyrvaya released in 2021.

Even short-term treatments, such as Eysuvis from Alcon, have been developed for eye dryness from the wind or direct airflow, and there are more to come.

Treatment The beginnings and beyond of longtime procedure, LASIK

aser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis – better known as LASIK – is a procedure that is testament to decades of technological innovation and advancement in refractive therapies and procedures, which continue to improve in the projected future.

Patented by Dr. Gholam Peyman in 1989 before receiving FDA approval in 1999, LASIK has been a prominent procedure for correcting refractive error in vision, particularly in near-sighted patients, for more than 35 years.

Alongside other current procedures, LASIK continues to be a prominent fixture for refractive correction.

Shaping the past From the beginning, refractive correction was aimed to treat myopia, also known as nearsightedness. This is due to the condition’s effect on the eye, making it too curved or long for normal light refraction in the retina, affecting the brain’s vision processing.

Before LASIK and other laser procedures, refractive correction started in Japan in the 1930s with Dr. Tsutomu Sato. He used radial keratotomies, which called for a doctor to use a diamond blade to make incisions into the cornea’s fourth layer, Descemet’s membrane, to flatten the cornea.

While this surgery helped correct the refraction errors caused by myopia, it brought about additional complications such as corneal decompensation.

The procedure remained prominent until the 1990s despite these complications, becoming more precise for corneal shaping.

In the 1950s and ’60s, keratomileusis, the medical term for cornea sculpting, came about thanks to Dr. José Ignacio Barraquer Moner of Colombia and his work on creating what would be known as anterior lamellar keratoplasty (ALK).

ALK, or the more often used, deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), uses a microkeratome to surgically remove diseased outer layers of the cornea while keeping the rest of the cornea intact.

Though it has changed since its earliest uses, as Barraquer Moner’s student, Dr. Luis Ruiz, was among the professionals who continued to improve the microkeratome’s precision through the 1980s, with the procedure still in use today.

The 1970s and ’80s saw lasers start to get introduced to refractive correction procedures, starting with heat lasers before the more precise, non-thermal alternatives were created, leading to the innovations of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and LASIK. With the implementation of lasers, doctors saw the procedures’ precision and efficiency with reduced recovery time and complications, leading to their prominence as part of eye procedures.

Current procedures LASIK and PRK are two prominent options for refractive correction laser procedures today.

PRK preceded LASIK by a few years, first performed in Louisiana in 1988 by Dr. Marguerite McDonald. The first LASIK procedure was done in 1990 at the University of Crete in Greece by Dr. Ioannis Pallikaris.

Traditional versions of these procedures do still use the microkeratome tool, but newer iterations utilize all-laser procedures. PRK is a one-laser procedure, using an ultraviolet excimer laser created from a high-voltage electron beam from a combined noble gas and halogen to remove superficial outer layers of the cornea before reshaping the tissue.

Combining the use of two lasers, LASIK starts by using an ultrafast, pulsing femtosecond laser to create a flap that exposes the eye’s inner framework, the stroma, before following with the excimer laser for the reshaping.

Post procedure, LASIK typically yields a quicker recovery of about one day, compared to three to five days for PRK, where patients deal with light sensitivity and discomfort due to the more invasive process of removing skin.

“The skin layer heals from the outside in, so the visual recovery is a little longer, and because there are nerve endings exposed, that’s why there is more discomfort and sensitivity than with LASIK,” says Dr. Robin Beran, a longtime practicing ophthalmologist of Columbus Lasik & Cataract Center.

If choosing between laser procedures, recovery time is one factor to consider, as well as eye metrics and activity level. For those with thin corneas or who partake in high-impact sports, PRK is often recommended for less risk of complications from creating a flap or the development of dry eye.

Another laser procedure between LASIK and PRK is small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). Initially performed in 2006 and then FDA-approved in 2016, SMILE is a flap-less procedure like PRK and uses a femtosecond laser to remove a small section, a lenticule, of the cornea to improve the light refraction process.

Although it has a shorter recovery window than PRK – estimated at one to two days – and poses less risk of flap-related complications, SMILE comes with an additional cost and its offering can depend on the ophthalmologist.

Misconceptions about LASIK Though some sources may suggest that LASIK and PRKs can address vision problems caused by farsightedness (known as hyperopia), many ophthalmologists, including Beran, see the best results in patients with myopia and nearsighted astigmatism.

He explains that in younger people, especially, farsighted laser correction wears off because their eye muscles overwork themselves and don’t typically accept the correction, which leads to a more difficult recovery.

In older patients, their eyes are better served to wait to get a cataract procedure, such as adding a Light Adjustable Lens (LAL), as eyes tend to become more farsighted with age. www.healthynewalbanymagazine.com

Laser Procedure Candidates For patients to be considered for LASIK, PRKs or another laser procedure, the following criteria can help determine if it is the right fit: • Treatable prescription for nearsightedness (from mild to moderate nearsightedness on average) • Cornea must be more than 500 microns thick

• One alternative to laser procedures includes an implantable Collamer lens (ICL) for those who are too nearsighted for laser correction.

Future developments As LASIK and other laser procedures continue to improve, new elements such as 3D imaging and topography-guiding have provided alternative navigation methods which can be especially helpful for irregularly shaped eyes.

Other advancements include real-time eye-tracking and cyclotorsion control, which account for involuntary and subtle eye movements during the procedure to adjust the laser as needed in live time.

Artificial intelligence has also become part of the screening and treatment plan process, helping analyze the topography scans and biometric measurements of the eye as well as processing habits to provide a detailed guide for the laser, aiding with unique cases where patients may have eye scarring, aberration and irregularities.

New laser procedures are also on the horizon. Beran notes LIRIC – laserinduced refractive index change – is one to look out for in the next 10 years or so.

With LIRIC combined with use of the femtosecond laser, refractive correction can change how tissue bends the light and its characteristics. So far, the procedure seems not only reversible, but may also be able to correct the prescription of implanted contact lenses for cataracts and myopia.

According to Beran, a procedure such as LIRIC would make past cataract procedures, such as the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL), less impactful.

Fore Her Future High school senior looks ahead after winning first professional golf tournament

M

ia Hammond, a 17-year-old New Albany High School senior, regularly competes in tournaments. Throughout navigating her adolescent years and educational career, Mia has reached many of her dreams with the support of her father.

Mia recently won her first major golf tournament and wants to continue playing the sport at a professional level, with a vision of her course ahead.

Teeing up Her passion for golf began by observing her father and mentor, Thomas Hammond, who practiced often and teaches at The Golf Room in Dublin. He gifted Mia her first small set of clubs and introduced her to an at-home swing simulator at 3 years old. She went on to enter her first competition only four years later.

“Mia’s athleticism has been there since day one,” Thomas says. “From the very first time she hit the ball, she never had many of the major flaws. She knew how to hold the club and set up the shot.”

Early on, she often found success, but once she placed sixth at an event and earned no medal, she was determined to fully commit.

“I’m a very competitive person,” Mia says. “I basically never wanted to be beat again, and that pushed me to be the best.”

As she grew, she incorporated golf into her routine, usually aligning with her father’s lesson schedule and practicing for about an hour-and-ahalf, three days each week.

Major wins Despite inclement weather and delays at the 2025 Epson Tour Greater Toledo Classic women’s tournament in July, Mia emerged victorious. She was the youngest player on the field.

“It was nerve-wracking. And knowing that I was at the top of the leaderboard, it felt like a little bit of a rush to get done,” Mia says. “I don’t feel like it bothered me as much as it could have.”

This marks her first win in a professional tournament. Her father stood by her side as her caddy, carrying her bag and guiding her choice of golf clubs.

This victory qualified Mia for the upcoming Epson Tour events, expediting her track to membership and playing golf professionally.

On and off the course While still meeting the demands of the sport, her father encouraged her to enjoy a normal childhood. Wrapping up her final years in high school gives her that chance.

“Golf takes up so much of my life,” Mia says. “None of my friends play, so it’s good to also have those relationships outside of golf.”

The more Mia competes, the more friends she leaves with.

She and her family accompany the occasional player for dinner after the tournament or get to know them in the hotel lobby. She has also made a close friend through golf who will be attending the same college as her.

Things to Know • This tournament certifies Hammond as the eighth-ever amateur to win on the Qualifying Tour of the Ladies Professional Golf Association and the first to do so in five years.

Mia played back-to-back bogeyfree rounds to hold a three-shot lead. A few days later, she was scheduled to compete in a tournament in Indiana.

• Hammond was once chosen as the “most valuable player” on her softball team.

• Thomas Hammond started playing golf when he was around 12 years old. He’s a selfproclaimed biomechanics expert with a background in occupational therapy. “I try to help her regulate her emotions,” Thomas says. “That’s the biggest thing, not being too hard on ourselves.”

The green ahead Mia dreams of playing golf at the professional level, but first, she wants to pursue a college degree.

Duke University offered her a full-ride scholarship to play on its golf team. The school scouted her during the summer between her sophomore and junior year.

She plans on majoring in general business and is considering enrolling in graduate school afterward to study law.

“It’s a matter of being patient and taking up with the opportunities you have,” Mia says. “Once I get through college, it’s going to be more about how I can help young girls that have the same dream as I did get to those.”

As Mia continues golfing, her father realizes the positive impacts it makes on her life. He watches her compose herself amidst the pressures of the competition and feels invited into her future the same way he ushered her into golf as a child.

“I’m proudest of who she’s become,” Thomas says. “Golf has made her a real wellrounded individual. It teaches life lessons.”

A Place to Grow Rose Run Presbyterian Church partnership paves the way for Healthy New Albany Food Pantry’s permanent home

T

he Healthy New Albany Food Pantry is preparing for a transformational new chapter. In November 2025, following months of thoughtful conversation and discernment, the congregation of Rose Run Presbyterian Church voted to welcome the pantry onto its campus, approving a long-term lease that will allow the pantry to build a permanent, purpose-designed home.

This partnership ensures the pantry can continue its mission to provide healthy food and essential resources, while expanding its capacity to meet the rising needs of families across the New AlbanyPlain Local School District.

When the need outgrows the space For nearly a decade, the pantry has operated out of the New Albany-Plain Local Schools Annex Building at 79 N. High Street, generously provided rent-free by the district. That space has allowed the pantry to grow into a critical resource that feeds more than 1,500 neighbors annually.

In recent years, two significant shifts have made it clear that the pantry needs a new home:

1. The school district needs the building back. With student enrollment rising, NAPLS must repurpose the Annex to support its growing population.

2. The pantry has outgrown the facility.

The Annex lacks the space and infrastructure required for efficient, dignified service: • Limited refrigeration and freezer capacity • No elevator and many stairs • Insufficient room for volunteers, storage or client flow In short, the existing building can no longer support the scale or dignity of service the community deserves.

A thoughtful search for a sustainable home To continue meeting rising need and to build a more secure future for the families it serves, the pantry began searching for a new home.

After exploring many potential sites, including properties that were either unaffordable or unsuitable, one option emerged as both mission-aligned and community-minded: a partnership with Rose Run Presbyterian Church.

In November, the congregation voted to approve a long-term lease of a portion

of its property, allowing the Healthy New Albany Food Pantry to build a permanent facility on a dedicated lot with its own entrance on Harlem Road. The lease will be offered at a symbolic $1 per year, a reflection of Rose Run’s commitment to the shared belief that no one in our community should face hunger alone.

The pantry will construct its own building and parking lot, fully funded and maintained by Healthy New Albany and community donors, with no financial or operational burden to the church.

“We are incredibly grateful to Rose Run Presbyterian Church for this gift of land for the food pantry,” says Rachel Haugk, executive director of Healthy New Albany. “This opportunity allows us to build a permanent, purpose-built pantry and gives us the foundation to not only meet the needs of the moment, but plan for the future with confidence.”

A purpose-built pantry designed for dignity and growth Early concepts envision an 8,00010,000 square foot Building, designed to reflect the pantry’s core principles: dignity, accessibility and choice. This purpose-built home will allow the pantry not only to meet today’s needs but to grow sustainably for decades to come.

What’s next Groundbreaking is anticipated for spring or summer of 2026, following the completion of design work, building permits and the launch of a forthcoming fundraising effort to support construction. The pantry will continue normal operations at the Annex until the new building is complete.

Debunking Food Pantry Myth #1: Food pantries only give out canned goods Fact: The Healthy New Albany Food Pantry provides far more than shelf-stable items. It distributes fresh produce, meat and vegetarian proteins, eggs and dairy, along with non-perishable items. It also offers essential household and personal care supplies not covered by SNAP, such as soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toilet paper and diapers.

The Healthy New Albany Food Pantry sources items through three channels: community food donations, low-cost purchasing through Mid-Ohio Food Collective, and, when necessary, retail stores. Because MOFC can stretch one donated dollar into nearly five dollars’ worth of food, financial gifts ensure resources are used as efficiently as possible. They also reduce waste by allowing the pantry to purchase exactly what is needed, when it’s needed, providing consistent access to fresh, nutritious items.

Myth #4: Food pantries are only busy during the holidays Fact: Hunger is a year-round issue.

While giving increases in November and December, families need food every

month. Need often grows when school is out, and more than 1 in 10 New AlbanyPlain Local School students lose access to free and reduced-price meals. The pantry provides summer meal support and break boxes to help fill those gaps when school is out of session. Consistent support throughout the year ensures families have what they need long after seasonal giving fades.

Myth #5: People who visit the pantry are given a box of food when they visit The Healthy New Albany Food Pantry operates like a no-cost grocery store, where neighbors select items that fit their household’s needs and preferences. Item amounts are based on family size, ensuring each appointment-based visit provides meaningful, personalized support.

Any Way Soft-cooked eggs may pose safety hazards

E

ggs are a staple in many households with 87 percent of Americans consuming eggs at least once a week. While some people prefer scrambled or hardboiled eggs, others prefer their eggs to be soft and runny.

For some, there is a misconception that runny eggs are always unsafe.

Raw eggs do carry the risk of containing salmonella, a bacteria which can cause food poisoning and symptoms such as diarrhea, fever and stomach pains.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate the risk is 1 in 20,000 or 0.005 percent.

However, while consuming raw or undercooked eggs is not advised, there are ways to still enjoy classic dishes such as eggs in a basket or eggs benedict while reducing the risk of infection.

Pasteurized, please!

Pasteurization involves heating a food product to a specific temperature for a set amount of time in order to kill harmful bacteria and germs.

This process can be applied to eggs in their shell as well, with pasteurization effectively killing the bacteria. While pasteurization does not completely erase the risk of salmonella, it can be an added safety measure.

Pasteurized eggs – not to be confused with pasture-raised – should be marked with a P and their carton should clearly state that they are pasteurized.

Even with pasteurized eggs, safe food handling practices should still be followed, such as properly refrigerating the eggs and hand washing before and during food preparation to prevent cross-contamination.

The Food and Drug Administration requires unpasteurized eggs in their shell to include the following safe handling instructions: “To prevent illness from bacteria: keep eggs refrigerated, cook eggs until yolks are firm and cook foods containing eggs thoroughly.”

Cooked to perfection Although less than three percent of shell eggs are pasteurized in the U.S., egg products such as liquid, frozen and dried eggs, are all required to be pasteurized, per the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

For recipes that utilize raw or undercooked eggs, such as Caesar dressing, mayonnaise, certain frostings or homemade ice cream, pasteurized eggs or egg products are key to minimizing salmonella risk.

Otherwise, to avoid salmonella food poisoning, the FDA recommends casseroles and other dishes containing eggs be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. A food thermometer is suggested as the best way to ensure these dishes reach the proper temperature.

Facts About Food Poisoning Salmonellosis, the food borne illness caused by salmonella bacteria, is one of the most common forms of food poisoning in the U.S. with a million cases recorded per year and 26,500 hospitalizations, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Most cases are the result of eating undercooked eggs or poultry, though salmonella bacteria can also contaminate fruits and vegetables, unpasteurized dairy products, raw meat, seafood and untreated water.

Animals, including pets, may also carry the bacteria, which is why hand washing is important prior to eating, especially after touching animals.

People can also spread salmonella. Someone who is sick with Salmonellosis may risk spreading it to other people if they fail to wash their hands and contaminate surfaces or food.

Although Salmonellosis can resolve on its own after a few days, there are certain individuals who may have a higher risk of severe illness. This includes people who are pregnant, young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

The Perfect Protein Not all protein is created equal. The Protein Digestibility-Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) grades the quality of a protein source based on its digestibility and humans’ amino acid requirements.

The scores range from zero to one, and the closer to one, the better. Eggs have a perfect score.

In some health and fitness communities, raw eggs might be mixed into smoothies or shakes for added protein.

However, there are also other sources of protein with a perfect PDCAAS score that don’t involve the risk of food poisoning.

These sources, many of which are available as powder supplements that are easily added to nutritional drinks, include casein (milk protein), cow’s milk, soy protein and whey protein.

New Albany Community Foundation kicks off 13th Lecture Series season The New Albany Community Foundation celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2025, ending the year with the launch of another lecture series season. The New Albany Lecture Series launched its 13th season on Oct. 9 with Robin Roberts, Good Morning America Co-Anchor and author. Roberts was interviewed by Pelotonia Vice Chair and Founder Doug Ulman and the discussion centered around health and wellbeing, including Roberts’ cancer journey.

The series will continue later this month on Jan. 28 with a discussion of civil discourse and a debate moderated by Linsey Davis, World News Tonight Sunday and ABC News Live Prime host and radio correspondent. The program brings political consultant and author James Carville and former White House Chief of Staff and Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus.
