Strands of difference While movie connoisseurs are used to the blond bob of Julie Andrews’ Maria, they may be surprised to learn that the original Maria von Trapp was a brunette, and was portrayed as such in the original Broadway musical.

During the filming of The Sound of Music, Andrews – a natural brunette – was fresh off the set of Mary Poppins, where she kept her hair short for wigs. In addition, a hair dyeing mistake turned her hair orange. The crew, wanting to lighten her natural hair for the camera, decided to cut off the orange strands and dye her hair completely blond.

Over the years, portrayals of Maria and her hair have changed, with many stage renditions favoring performers’ natural hair colors and textures.

For the current North American tour, Capaldi worked with O’Brien and the creative team, particularly longtime Broadway veteran and tour hair designer Tom Watson, to create a wig that resembled her own brunette curls.

“I think curls suit (Maria),” Capaldi says.

The effects of caffeine on adolescents

WITH THE GROWING variety of energy and pre-workout drinks sporting colorful packaging and candy flavors, it’s easy for kids to be drawn to these beverages without realizing what is in them – or whether they should be drinking them at all.

Energy drinks and other high-caffeine drinks can have serious health side effects for adolescents, who may be attracted to them by social media trends or peer pressure. Staying informed about recommended caffeine levels, and sharing that insight with kids, can help you avoid larger issues down the road.

Recommended caffeine intake Caffeine stimulates the brain and nervous system, providing a short-term increase in alertness, focus and energy.

Within 15 minutes of consumption, the effects can be felt as the caffeine enters the bloodstream.

For healthy adults without preexisting medical conditions, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends a maximum of 400 milligrams of caffeine per day to avoid dangerous side effects.

Many pediatricians follow the caffeine guidelines for adolescents set by American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, which suggests absolutely no caffeine

for children under 12 years old. Children between 12 and 18 are discouraged from having caffeine, but if they do, it should be less than 100 milligrams per day.

Dr. Norah Ledyard, a pediatrician at Mount Carmel Health System, recommends consuming caffeine in its natural form, such as in coffees and teas, to limit the side effects of additives.

Risks of caffeine Many caffeinated drinks come with warnings to the effect of “only intended for persons 18 years or older” due to potential side effects such as disrupted sleep, increased anxiety, higher heart rate and blood pressure, and caffeine dependency.

Many teens – and adults – rely on caffeine to deal with tiredness, Ledyard says, though that tiredness may stem from lack of sleep caused by caffeine.

“Every single day, I see adolescents with sleep issues, anxiety and worries. Caffeine can trigger and worsen those,” she says.

“Sometimes I think we don’t realize the connection to some of these drinks.”

Caffeine can have unexpected effects on different people, especially those with pre-existing medical concerns or family histories. The stimulant can also interact with other medications, causing more severe symptoms.

Adolescents’ growing bodies – which are growing physically and mentally while going through hormonal changes – are more susceptible to the effects of caffeine.

“What I always talk about with kids is that, at this age, your brain and your body are very vulnerable to a lot of changes happening,” says Dr. Misha D. Yajnik, a pediatric doctor at OhioHealth.

Staying educated A national poll conducted by C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann

Arbor found that one in three parents do not know the recommended caffeine limits for teens. Many highlycaffeinated drinks that are marketed to adolescents contain 200 milligrams of caffeine or more, well above the recommended amount.

“A lot of parents aren’t aware of what’s in these drinks,” says Ledyard.

“Their adolescents may be taking their money and buying them on their own.”

Alternatives to Caffeine With long school days and extracurricular activities, your child might feel like they need caffeine to give them energy, but a healthy lifestyle can go a long way. Here are some things to incorporate into their daily routine to help give them energy: •Getting good sleep •Participating in calming routines such as yoga, journaling and reading before bed •Staying hydrated •Eating a healthy diet filled with nutrient-dense foods •Engaging in regular physical activity

Experts suggest parents help their children understand that an energy drink isn’t the same as a soda, and that these beverages are loaded with caffeine and additives. Many energy drinks and pre-workouts contain other stimulants such as guarana, taurine and L-carnitine, which can also increase blood pressure, heart rate and breathing rate.

Learning how to read the label on these drinks can help identify the caffeine content and look for other potentially harmful ingredients.

Talking with children about family medical history and any predispositions can help them be more cautious as well.

“I have a lot of young teenage athletes. They are not educated on a lot of the ingredients in some of these drinks,” says Yajnik. “They think, ‘Oh yeah, I should drink this because it’s going to help my performance,’ but they don’t realize there’s a lot of additives.”

Yajnik and Ledyard both emphasize the importance of setting a good example for kids. Modeling healthy lifestyles can make a huge difference in helping adolescents make smart choices on what they are consuming. CS

The Mocktail Movement Say cheers to the new year, minus the alcohol

DRY JANUARY IS no new trend, but for many people, cutting back on alcohol has become less of a monthlong challenge and more of a lifestyle shift.

According to a Gallup poll conducted this past July, the percentage of adults in the U.S. who say they consume alcohol has decreased to 54 percent, the lowest it has been since Gallup began tracking it in 1939. As alcohol consumption decreases, mocktails are finding their place on the main menu.

Mocktails have roots in early global traditions of non-alcoholic drinks, later shaped by the 19th-century Temperance Movement and cultural practices that favored alcohol-free beverages. After Prohibition, interest in unique non-alcoholic options grew and, in recent years, the rise of health-focused lifestyles has fueled a renewed demand for flavorful alternatives to alcohol.

What is a mocktail?

The modern mocktail has evolved to be much more than a traditional virgin cocktail. Instead of mere cocktails with the alcohol removed, mocktails now have their own spots on menus and are crafted with a focus on flavor.

Zero-proof spirited cocktails use alcohol-free versions of gin, whiskey, tequila and more to create non-alcoholic versions of classic cocktails such as Negronis and spritzes. Botanical drinks are built with herbal and health-supportive ingredients, using bases such as tea and seltzers, while fruit-based drinks are made with juices and citrus-forward flavors.

Where to sip responsibly Mocktails have been around for decades, but in recent years, restaurants have worked to elevate them, putting an emphasis on balance, aromatics and presentation to make them feel just as enticing as a cocktail.

Whether you’re looking to start your new year off fresh, challenge yourself or opt for lower-alcohol options, restaurants across central Ohio are adapting to sober-curious trends.

Huli Huli Tiki Lounge - Seafoam Sipper

Another fan favorite is the Seafoam Sipper, which tastes of lightly sweet, coconut-kissed cream soda with herbal notes of pandan and mint, all with a smooth, silky finish.

DIY drinks We all know that winter months make for more nights in. If you prefer your refreshments from the comfort of your couch, here are a few recipes to try.

Guests can opt for non-alcoholic versions of select cocktails or enjoy a separate mocktail section including alternatives that emphasize fresh juices and Filipino flavors, such as the Ube Colada, a combination of ube simple syrup, lime, pineapple and coconut cream.

For a truly unforgettable dining experience, stop by Bonifacio on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays for Boodle Night. Watermelon-Basil Cooler

Dirty Coconut Coke

•½ cup raw sugar •8 fresh basil leaves, sprig for garnish •4 wide strips lime zest •1 oz. lime juice •½ Fresno chili pepper •2 oz. fresh watermelon juice •2 oz. non-alcoholic tequila

•8 oz. cola •½ oz. cream of coconut (such as Coco Real) •¼ oz. fresh lime juice •2 oz. unsweetened coconut milk •1 lime wedge

Make the basil syrup: Simmer the sugar, basil, lime zest, pepper and ½ cup water until the sugar dissolves. Cool, refrigerate for about an hour, then strain. Keeps up to two weeks.

Assemble the drink: Mix ¾ oz. basil syrup with lime juice, watermelon juice and tequila, then pour over ice and garnish with a basil sprig.

Combine the base: In a highball glass, mix cola, cream of coconut and lime juice. Add ice and stir briefly to blend.

Finish and garnish: Pour in the coconut milk slowly to create a gradient, then garnish with a lime wedge.

Low-ABV Brews For those who prefer beer over cocktails, there are plenty of ways to enjoy while sticking to your goals. Here’s a list of low-ABV and non-alcoholic beer options around Columbus.

Athletic Brewing Co. Line (~0.0%): Athletic is a prominent non-alcoholic brewery, and it can be found at local bottle shops around the city.

BrewDog – Cold AF (<0.5%): BrewDog’s non-alcoholic pilsner is just as crisp and refreshing as its typical brews.

The Arnold Sports Festival through the eyes of a local

AS AARON TUCKER lines up for another

5K on a chilly spring day, he is brimming with excitement and energy.

In the center of downtown Columbus, right in front of the Greater Columbus Convention Center, he stands next to his fellow racers, ready to take off.

Just as the race is about to begin, he hears the booming voice of Arnold Schwarzenegger telling all of the racers to “Get to the chopper.” That’s how Tucker knows the Arnold 5K has begun.

The 5K is a part of the Arnold Sports Festival, which has brought world-class bodybuilders, strongmen and women, and thousands of other athletes and spectators to Columbus for nearly four decades.

As it enters its 37th year this March, view the festival and expo through the eyes of a Columbus native.

Plenty to do and see Tucker got into running in 2021, and has participated in the Arnold 5K Pump & Run almost every year since.

Even before getting into running, he was a committed fan of the festival. To truly get the best experience, he recommends going early to avoid the crowds and enjoy extra perks.

Racing Challenge If you are looking to add another level to your run game, sign up for the Arnold Ruck, the rucking division of the Arnold 5K. Run with athletes from more than 30 states as you start at the corner of North High and Spruce streets near the Arnold Statue and take in the downtown Columbus views.

“I always tell people, yes, you pay the money to park. Yes, you pay that money to get to the expo, but it’s a lot of freebies,” Tucker says. “I do enjoy going to the different booths to look at different products. Whether it’s for weight training or to try out different energy drinks or different protein shakes, you know, something that you can add to your everyday fuel.”

But Tucker doesn’t just go for the snacks. The strongman, strongwoman and bodybuilding athletes have always amazed him, he says.

“It’s awesome to see how people can transform their bodies in that way, which is a whole different level that I don’t think I can ever achieve,” he says.

Outside of the bodybuilding and strongman/woman competitions, the festival also hosts a variety of other sports and events, ranging from arm wrestling and strongest firefighter to youth cheer and foosball.

Lasting impact For Tucker, the festival is more than just an opportunity to get some free samples and an excuse to visit the convention center.

Through the festival, he has met famous athletes and actors he admires, such as English actor and bodybuilder Martyn Ford, but he especially enjoys the positivity he has seen when competing in the Pump & Run. “It’s just been addicting. Especially when you do it with your friends, you challenge each other, who can get more reps, or whatever the case may be, but everybody’s cheering for each other,” Tucker says. “The cool thing about the bench press is that strangers are cheering for each other. I’ll be yelling and screaming, ‘Let’s go.’ I never will see this person ever again, but they’re cheering for you.”

What Tucker has enjoyed the most is learning more about the world of fitness than he ever knew, and he hopes others take the opportunity to explore all of what the festival and expo have to offer. “(The festival) is bringing more eyeballs to the sport of bodybuilding, bringing more eyeballs to the support of strongman and strongwoman, bringing

Teaching Tomorrow’s Tech The Ohio State University introduces university-wide AI programming

ou see it when you scroll through your social media feed. You see it in ads and commercials. You may even see it in your inbox, offering responses to emails.

AI has entered countless aspects of everyday life, but despite its evergrowing knowledge base, it still needs to be guided – which provides an opportunity for people who want to learn how to guide it.

With AI’s increasing prevalence and applications, The Ohio State University this past June kicked off a AI Fluency initiative with the goal of teaching the next generation of workers how to ethically apply this new tool in their fields.

Getting started Led by the Office of Academic Affairs with support of other offices and centers, including the Center for Software Innovation and the Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning, the AI Fluency initiative at OSU is the first of its kind in the nation.

The initiative was spearheaded by Executive Vice President and Provost Ravi V. Bellamkonda after he joined OSU in 2025. Having launched and led an AI initiative when he worked at Em-

ory University in Georgia, Bellamkonda was excited to help OSU create one of its own.

“Ohio State students will become ‘bilingual’ – fluent in both their major field of study and the application of AI in that area. Grounded with a strong sense of responsibility and possibility, we will prepare Ohio State’s students to harness the power of AI and to lead in shaping its future of their area of study,” Bellamkonda wrote in a statement.

The goal of the initiative is to make members of the current freshman class fluent in AI applications by the time they graduate in 2029.

“AI fluency is about being fluent in the application of AI to the field of study,” says Center for Software Innovation Executive Director Shereen Agrawal. “It’s one thing to learn about technology and treat it as something (like) ‘I learned how X works,’ or ‘I learned X concept.’ There’s another piece. How does it apply to the things that you care about and, increasingly, field applications?”

Dr. Vince Castillo, an OSU assistant professor of logistics and member of the AI Fluency Faculty Advisory Council, began incorporating AI into his classroom in 2023. He has continued to work with students and lead discussions on how the tool works and how they can ethically incorporate it into their workflow.

In his classes, students have discovered ways to use AI to streamline or eliminate harder and menial tasks related to their field, such as creating data sets or writing coding scripts.

means to them within music, so they’re able to approach artificial intelligence and machine learning from their own experience – and in many cases, from an embodied experience, as opposed to a linguistic one,” Tallon says.

As examples, Tallon points to audio recognition programs that can help students improve their solo practicing or analyze audio files that can be used for musical therapy.

Here to stay With three National Science Foundation-funded centers on campus – the AI-EDGE Institute, ICICLE and the Center on Responsible AI and Governance – students and staff at OSU have received lessons and guidance on how to incorporate and work with AI for years.

Agrawal says the introduction of the AI Fluency initiative as a university-wide program is meant to branch connections across colleges and fields and create a pathway for the future.

“We have this moment in time where we can decide that we’re going to take a concerted and bold approach to thinking about this head-on,” she says. “(Determining) ‘What’s going to be that Ohio State identity to it?’ and ‘How are we going to make sure that it still reinforces some key and core principles?’ … is going to be hard, but we’re up to the challenge.” CS

Rethinking Emergency Care Nontraditional emergency rooms offer alternatives to busy hospitals

T

he emergency room is associated with long wait times and a crowded environment, not ideal for injuries or illnesses requiring more attention.

Since they were conceived in the 1970s as a way of providing emergency care to areas without a hospital, freestanding emergency departments (FSEDs) have become increasingly popular and, in some circumstances, preferable to hospital ERs. What’s a freestanding emergency department?

The FSED term typically refers to an ER not physically attached to inpatient services, with American College of Emergency Physicians’ definition – which may vary by state – specifying that FSEDs are open 24/7, 365 days a year.

FSEDs are classified as either hospitalaffiliated “satellite” departments, or as autonomous and independently owned. A majority of FSEDs – including all of Ohio’s 50 such departments – are hospital-affiliated, which can help make

transfers smoother when a patient requires more advanced care.

These FSEDs generally comply with the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA), which requires Medicare-participating hospitals to provide a medical screening examination and stabilizing treatment to anyone who comes into the emergency department, regardless of their ability to pay. Similar to hospital ERs, FSEDs are also required to have qualified staff, including emergency physicians, nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants.

Differences in service Only hospital ERs can admit patients for inpatient care and handle more complex injuries and illnesses that require specialist care or interventions, such as surgery. Otherwise, FSEDs are full-service ERs capable of handling life-threatening emergencies and can be an appropriate alternative to the emergency room.

Care in Central Ohio Several Ohio hospital systems have FSEDs, including Cleveland Clinic, Mercy Health, Kettering Health and Premier Health. In central Ohio, OhioHealth and Mount Carmel are the primary systems with FSEDs, with locations in Westerville, New Albany, Lewis Center, Powell, Hilliard, Obetz and Reynoldsburg, among others.

For non-life-threatening conditions, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has advanced UCCs in New Albany, Dublin and Columbus. Additionally, OhioHealth offers UCCs in locations such as Polaris, Hilliard, Dublin, New Albany, Grandview Heights and Franklinton, while Mount Carmel has UCCs in Grove City and near Reynoldsburg.

Compared to traditional walk-in urgent care centers (UCCs), which can only treat patients with non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses, FSEDs typically have more advanced imaging capabilities such as X-rays, CT scans and ultrasounds.

They also have laboratory capabilities for blood work and diagnostic tests, and they have intravenous fluids and medications, narcotics, and resuscitative medications.

Convenient care There are now more than 840 FSEDs in the U.S., up from 50 in 2001, which makes them roughly 15 percent of all emergency departments, per the 2022 National Emergency Department Inventory.

While data is inconsistent as to whether FSEDs take a load off hospital ERs, some research suggests that FSEDs perform just as well, if not better, in terms of wait times, treatment times and patient satisfaction.

Feed Your Health Eating fiber helps with digestion and disease prevention

A

s New Year’s resolutions drive people to the gym, they may be tempted to load up on protein shakes and supplements. But in doing so, they may miss out on a crucial nutrient: fiber.

Fiber is a carbohydrate found in foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts.

Though recommendations vary for individuals with digestion-related medical conditions, Harvard’s Nutrition Source suggests children and adults generally need 25-35 grams of fiber per day. However, most Americans only get about 15 grams per day, which may cause them to

Constant Constipation One potential sign of fiber deficiency is constipation, which can include three or fewer bowel movements a week, difficulty or pain passing stool, or small, hard, pebble-like stool.

Occasional constipation can be okay, but symptoms persisting for three months or longer can lead to bloating, cramping and nausea.

Chronic constipation can also cause abdominal pressure and increase the risk of problems such as fecal impaction, diverticular disease (wherein small pouches form in the lining of the large intestine) and hemorrhoids.

In addition to ingesting more fiber via fruits, vegetables and whole grains, constipation may also be alleviated by drinking more water and exercising regularly.

Types of fiber Soluble (dissolves in water) and insoluble fiber each have their own benefits.

Soluble fiber attracts water in the digestive tract, forming a gel-like substance that helps slow digestion. Soluble fiber can help lower cholesterol, prevent glucose surges after eating and reduce hunger – particularly important given that blood glucose and weight are risk factors for diabetes, which can double the risk for heart disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Sources of soluble fiber include oatmeal, chia seeds, nuts, beans, lentils, apples and blueberries.

Insoluble fiber plays a role in promoting regular bowel movements by helping food move through the digestive system.

Insoluble fiber can be found in whole wheat products, quinoa, brown rice, legumes, leafy greens such as kale, almonds, walnuts, seeds, and fruits with edible skins such as pears and apples.

Fermentability is another key property of fiber. Fermentable fiber acts as food for gut bacteria, which uses it to create short-chain fatty acids that increase water in the intestines to create easier-to-pass stools, regulate inflamma-

tion, and help with metabolic and immune function.

Nonfermentable fiber travels to the colon intact, contributing bulk and weight to stool that helps with bowel movements.

Getting a fiber fix Besides helping with digestive health, fiber also can help reduce the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Some studies suggest that increased intake of certain fibers is associated with a reduced risk of colorectal and breast cancer.

he world is full of people who love sugary foods, but don’t love the calories that come along for the ride. A new process to create substitutes for sugar might make those sweet treats a little more healthful – without sacrificing taste.

If you’re looking to add more fiber to your diet, here are some tips from the Mayo Clinic: • For breakfast, choose cereals with five grams or more of fiber per serving. Prioritize cereals with whole grain, bran or fiber in the name. Add fruit for additional fiber.

• Choose whole-grain bread, rice, pasta, etc.

• Try substituting white flour with whole grain flour when baking.

• Eat fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes (peas, beans, lentils, etc).

• Swap sugary snacks for high-fiber options such as whole fruits, raw vegetables, low-fat popcorn without salt, whole grain crackers or nuts, and dried fruits that don’t have added sugar. The production process Though discovered in the 1940s, allulose wasn’t approved for commercial use until 2015, and adoption of it has been slow. Allulose retains 70 percent of the flavor found in regular sugar, or sucrose, but contains fewer calories. The chemical, also known as D-psicose, occurs naturally in raisins, figs, wheat and molasses.

In 2023, researchers from the University of California Davis and the Department of Chemistry at the Mars Advanced Research Institute discovered a production technique to produce allulose more efficiently.

Before the findings, manufacturers had to use expensive separation techniques to isolate the allulose from glucose and fructose molecules, lest their products have lower purity and yield.

To improve the production process, the researchers tested a natural process called precise fermentation. This process identifies the bacterium Escherichia coli, more commonly referred to as E. coli, as an industrial microorganism – which has the enzymes to create allulose – and enables it to convert the glucose to allulose by editing its metabolism. Now, manufacturers can create a higher-purity product with an increase in output of almost 99 percent, reducing the need for processing and extensive purification efforts.

Implications for consumers The newest production technique for allulose minimizes metabolization as it passes through the body, with

Researchers are collaborating with partners in the sugar industry to upscale their work, with the hopes of eventually getting the sugar alternative into more products on shelves.

Products that already use allulose include Simple Truth sweetener, Chobani Zero Sugar yogurt and SmartSweets candy. These and a range of other foods and drinks can be found at grocery stores around Columbus and beyond.

As reported by Healthline, allulose promotes weight loss normally spurred on by sugar intake and improves how the body handles fat stored in liver cells.

This change leaves fewer calories behind than regular sugar, making it helpful for those who follow keto and other diets, and also reducing consumption. It also has an imperceptible effect on blood glucose and insulin levels – good news for individuals with diabetes who are worried about spikes in glycemic response. Medication Advancements New drug approval makes huge advancements in HIV/AIDS fight

A

fter more than four decades of research and treatment advances, a new drug presents a promising contribution to the fight against HIV/ AIDS. Developed by Gilead Sciences, lenacapavir offers hope for people with limited treatment options due to drug-resistant HIV. History and reach An estimated 1.3 million people are infected with HIV each year, but with the recent approval of lenacapavir under the brand name Yeztugo by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, this number could see drastic changes. HIV affects the body’s immune system, and without treatment, the virus can lead to AIDS. HIV was first detected in the U.S. in 1981, taking the lives of more than 700,000 Americans since, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In Ohio, the number of HIV/AIDS diagnoses sharply peaked in the early 1990s, and since then has slowly declined. Ohio saw 861 new cases reported in 2023, with the majority of cases reported in Franklin County.

One early treatment for the disease was antiretroviral therapy, an assortment of daily pills designed to contain the virus. Since then, antiretroviral therapy has become a widely used daily treatment for those with HIV, working to protect others from contracting the virus. Lenacapavir began as a treatment used in combination with other medicines for HIV-positive patients, but has recently been approved as a preventative measure against the spread of the virus.

How it works Most HIV drugs focus on suppressing the virus within the body to prevent the spread to others through daily pills. Due to the high dependence on consistency with the daily medication, the effectiveness of these pills is not as high as it could be. Lenacapavir, which is administered as a biannual injection, offers a solution that doesn’t depend on a strict daily schedule.

Like a vaccine, lenacapavir works to prevent infection before the virus enters the body. Unlike a vaccine, however, lenacapavir stays in the body as a defense against HIV, while vaccines train the immune system to fight off sickness.

According to Time Magazine, lenacapavir stays in the body longer than other antiviral medications and has proven to be effective in preventing the replication process of the virus.

Potential for impact Lenacapavir has demonstrated a roughly 99.9 percent protection rate in a large clinical trial. The treatment works by preventing the spread of the virus, so the drug would be administered to those who are HIV-negative.

For those already living with HIV,

lenacapavir can be used in combination with other treatments to control the spread of the virus in the body.

While lenacapavir holds potential to have a strong impact on the spread of HIV, accessibility is a key concern. As of now, only medical professionals can administer the injections, making access more difficult for vulnerable populations in low- and middle-income countries.

In the U.S., the annual list price for lenacapavir as HIV prevention (Yeztugo) is more than $28,000. By contrast, generic versions licensed for use in low- and middle-income countries are priced at about $40 per year, with estimates suggesting the cost could drop to roughly $25 per year if demand is high.

The cost agreement is backed by Unitaid, an organization dedicated to providing affordable and accessible healthcare across the world. The treatment was quickly approved by the FDA and European Medicines Agency, and is set to be accessible in low- and middle-income countries by 2027. Weighing in on Weight Loss Drugs A look into the rise of GLP-1s, as well as their risks and benefits

A

pproximately 70 percent of Americans are overweight or obese according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Being overweight, typically defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 25-29.9, is associated with increased risk for health issues such as high blood pressure, stroke and heart attack.

Within a culture hyper-focused on diet and beauty standards, drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy have become popular solutions for quick weight loss. However, these drugs aren’t for everyone, and they’re not a one-and-done solution for weight loss.

A brief history Following World War II, amphetamines, a class of addictive stimulants known for boosting energy and metabolism while decreasing appetite, became popular for weight loss.

In 1959, the Food and Drug Administration approved the first weight loss drug, phentermine. Similar stimulants and appetite suppressants became common weight loss drugs up until the early 2000s.

In 2005, the FDA approved Exenatide, an injectable drug for diabetes that mimics the hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), helping to regulate blood sugar. GLP-1 also regulates appetite by slowing digestion and creating a feeling of fullness.

Exenatide’s approval effectively paved the way for future GLP-1 drugs, including Victoza, Saxenda and, in 2017, Ozempic, which became a weight loss sensation.

The Ozempic trend Despite Ozempic’s association with fast weight loss, it’s intended to treat type 2 diabetes. However, a third of patients on Ozempic had no history of diabetes, per Trilliant Health analytics.

Social media, celebrity endorsements and media coverage contributed to off-label use of Ozempic, resulting in shortages for those who actually need the medication.

Even after the FDA’s 2021 approval of weight loss drug Wegovy – which has

a higher dosage of semaglutide, the same active ingredient in Ozempic – Ozempic is still prescribed off-label since some insurance plans don’t cover weight loss drugs.

The same situation applies to Mounjaro, a diabetes drug approved in 2022, and Zepbound, a weight loss drug approved in 2023.

Despite both drugs containing tirzepatide – which mimics GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) to regulate blood sugar, appetite, metabolism and fat storage – insurance coverage isn’t guaranteed.

A 2024 study of more than 18,000 people on Ozempic or Mounjaro found that 48 percent had no history of diabetes.

There’s also concern about counterfeit versions of Ozempic and suchlike drugs, which may not have been tested for safety, quality or effectiveness.

These drugs may also include harmful ingredients or have incorrect dosages.

but GLP-1s aren’t a perfect weight loss solution.

In addition to side effects such as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, bloating, constipation and diarrhea, some data shows that the body may adjust to the drug and weight can plateau.

Weight may also be gained back after people stop taking the drug.

Additionally, rapid weight loss from these drugs can cause dehydration, malnutrition, gallstones and electrolyte imbalance.

Extreme weight loss from GLP-1s may also contribute to sagging skin, though exercise can help skin return to normal by building muscle to fill the space.

Individuals interested in weight loss drugs should speak with their doctor to evaluate their eligibility and determine the safest way to lose weight before jumping on the trend. CS

Orchestral Ambience Jazz CEO and symphony executive director share musically inspired home

F

ew would be surprised to learn that an impressive piano anchors the living room of two notable names in central Ohio’s music community.

The working, custom-made trombone stand, though? Now, that might elicit a surprise or two.

That trombone stand and piano sit side-by-side in the Clintonville home that Jazz Arts Group CEO Katy Coy and Central Ohio Symphony Executive Director Benjamin Coy share with their son, Anson.

The Coys bought the home in September 2024, moving back to central Ohio after eight years in south Texas town McAllen. They had lived in Clin-

tonville during a prior stretch of time in Columbus – Ben was completing his doctorate at The Ohio State University, and Katy was working for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra – so it only made sense they would return to the neighborhood when they returned to central Ohio for Katy’s new job at JAG. The house they picked wasn’t even one they had considered. They were looking at another Clintonville home, and when it didn’t interest them, the real estate agent suggested the 100-year-old house they’d eventually choose. And though they were initially hesitant to consider a house so old, it quickly made an impression – not least because of the ways it reminded the Coys of the old brownstone they’d called home in Chicago, the town where they were living when they met.

“We’ve kind of let the house talk to us,” Katy says.

The house’s layout, particularly its high ceilings, made it a space that could serve as a residence and a music studio, Ben says. The quality woodwork and cabinetry was a selling point, as was the abundance of natural light.

“You don’t see these little bits of character in newer houses,” says Katy.

And the whole family appreciates the location, not far from High Street and within walking distance to the nearest ice cream shop. When events such as the Clintonville Jamboree take place on High Street, the Coys need only open their windows to hear the music.

The piano, which the Coys moved here from Texas, is the centerpiece of the living room. Ben uses it as part of the music lessons he teaches, Anson uses it as his study space and both of them play.

The trombone stand is a custom job that Ben obtained during a music educators’ conference in San Antonio. He encountered a vendor selling intricate music stands and idly asked him if he’d ever made one for a trombone, knowing from personal experience – he’s played the trombone since fourth grade, and it’s what his doctorate is in – that most trombone stands are inconvenient and unattractive. By a stroke of luck, the vendor had built just such a stand for a nephew who no longer used it, and he was happy to pass it on to Ben. “He wanted it to go to someone who would use it and display it,” he says.

Another musical instrument on display in the living room is the ukulele.

Katy picked it up, intending to learn to play it, but was not shocked when Ben –the extensively trained musician that he is – figured it out in a matter of days.

The Coys may be musically inclined, but there’s more arts and culture than just music in the living room. Two bookshelves are loaded with references to the family’s interests, starting with a collection of plays that reflect Katy’s background in theater – as well as the circumstances under which the couple met, when Ben was in the pit orchestra for a show Katy was involved in producing.

Other books include cookbooks, reference guides, sheet music, beer brewing chemistry guides and even collections of correspondence by Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein.

Socked away under the coffee table is a chessboard, hand-carved in Spain, that Ben picked up at a local antique store for the couple’s anniversary. Though the gift was just as much for Anson, who was a competitive chess player in Texas.

Hanging over the fireplace – which has been out of use for many years, but still adds character to the room – is a painting the couple bought from an art-

ist in Central Park during a trip to New York City, not knowing where they would eventually put it.

It’s no wonder, given its contents, that the living room is the hub of much of the activity in the Coy home. It’s where Ben practices and gives private lessons, and it’s where Katy has periodically held JAG meetings and impromptu performances, the source of the room’s “Jazz Club” nickname.

“My staff Christmas party ended in a jam session this past December,” says Katy.

The dining area tends to capture attention with the collection of artwork and other keepsakes on the wall. The Coys call it the Wall of Optimism – they originally put it together in Texas, during the early days of COVID-19 – and Katy looks at it every day as she has her morning coffee. Among the highlights of it are: • A wedding photo • A sketch of Katy created by a high school friend of hers, who drew it with her eyes closed • A poster for Andersonville, the Chicago neighborhood in which the Coys once lived • A drawing bearing a Spanish phrase that translates to “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life,” a quote by German poet Berthold Auerbach Inside the dining room cabinets is a set of hand-painted Mexican china, which the couple bought in McAllen.

At the back of the house is an office used primarily by Katy, who jokes that much of the central Ohio arts community would recognize it from the background of her Zoom calls. The huge windows let in lots of natural light, which Katy appreciates, and also offer ample opportunities to spot squirrels, rabbits, neighborhood cats and other urban wildlife.

“I love that I have so many windows that I can’t hang anything on the wall,” she says.

Cruising for a Cure Buckeye Cruise for Cancer connects community while supporting OSUCCC – James

EVERY FEBRUARY, THOUSANDS of Buck-

eye fans trade Ohio’s gray winter skies for Caribbean blue aboard the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer. This weeklong getaway blends vacation destinations with fundraising for The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James).

Part relaxation, part pep rally, the cruise offers a unique way to travel and meet Buckeye greats – current or former coaches, athletes and prominent alumni – while also supporting a worthy cause.

Now in its 19th year, and recipient of the 2024 JEGS Foundation Award of Excellence, the cruise continues to

draw travelers, survivors and Buckeye fans alike for a special week at sea filled with camaraderie, celebration and connection.

All aboard The Buckeye Cruise for Cancer was founded in 2008 by Lisa Cisco and Chris Quinn with the help of a small group of volunteers. Having begun with a goal to raise $1 million, the cruise has since grown into one of OSUCC – James’ signature fundraising events, raising more than $40 million since its inception, according to the cruise’s 2025 Impact Report.

Onboard, daily activities range from a Buckeye Spectacular Show – featuring

current and former OSU greats such as Archie Griffin, Urban Meyer and Ryan Day – to autograph sessions, game nights and tournaments, live auctions, breakfasts with cancer survivors and more. Cruisers can also lounge poolside while enjoying live entertainment from Columbus musicians.

In the past, the cruise has taken travelers to standout tropical ports such as St. Lucia, St. John’s (Antigua), Roseau (Dominica), CocoCay, Freeport (Bahamas) and Key West. This year, cruisers will take off from Fort Lauderdale and visit Grand Turk, St. Maarten, St. Barts, St. Thomas and San Juan.

Aboard the cruise, cancer survivors are not just passengers, but honored participants given a space to share their stories and feel understood. Many survivors describe the community as a family.

Full speed ahead As the cruise embarks on its 19th trip this February, its impact continues to extend far beyond the ship’s deck.

Every voyage fuels groundbreaking research, supports essential patient care and strengthens the local network of survivors and families – pushing the fight against cancer forward.

Pattern in Errors

Retiree returns to the art world after a layered career

FROM CHILDHOOD SUPERHERO drawings to silkscreen printing to graphic design and more, Alan Kinnard has navigated changing times and emerging art forms.

Now, at 71 years old and more than a decade into retirement, he continues to reinvent himself through art.

Behind the silkscreen Initially studying social studies in college, Kinnard never expected to pursue an art career until his father suggested an art course. After declaring a minor in art, Kinnard was eventually introduced to silkscreen printing.

After graduating from Miami University in 1976, he continued to pursue the craft professionally and creatively.

For many years, he worked at a wall printing firm in Columbus while also designing and showing his own works at regional galleries, but eventually had to step away, frequently getting sick from the chemicals.

In 1986, Kinnard started his own graphic design company, learning the industry through tutorials and taking on projects with entities such as the

Glitches meet the printer As Kinnard focused on creating his own art, he found himself drawn back to the errors he saw in printing and technology.

“I was always fascinated by the errors in the printing, the idea that the pixels aren’t supposed to be there,” Kinnard says. “(Then I thought), ‘What if I use them as design elements?’”

Starting with photos or screenshots of computer or television glitches, Kinnard creates patterns and layering effects to highlight how humans interact with technology and “specifically, what happens when things go wrong and how people react,” he says.

This type of work aligns with the techspressionism movement, the digital version of expressionism, but Kinnard still draws from his roots as a printmaker.

“I started out silk-screening, and to build the image, you need to think about it in terms of layers and how they’re going to pile on and make your image,” he says. “There’s a process to silkscreen, and that’s how I look at these digital pieces, too.”
