Mayor’s Message Dan Reese

November is here! Let the holiday season begin. Halloween has become quite the event in Windcrest over the last few years! In November, we will celebrate Veterans Day on November 11th. We will, of course, celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 27th. I hope you all have plenty to be thankful for and are able to spend some time with those you love.

Windcrest Elections: Election Day is November 4th. I’m told this edition will be delivered the week of October 27th. We are electing the office of Mayor and City Council Members Place 4 and 5. I thank all the candidates for their willingness to serve and look forward to working with you in keeping Windcrest a great place to live! The closest polling place will be at our own Takas Park Civic Center at 9310 Jim Seal Drive. You are going to vote whether to reauthorize the use of one quarter percent of the sales tax revenue collected for maintenance and repair of municipal streets. Thanks to you, we have been using that revenue for many years to support street repair.

State, County, and School District Elections: You will see a lot more on the ballot than just our Windcrest city elections! There are 17 State of Texas Propositions that consider changes to the Constitution of Texas. Bexar County has two Propositions that consider funding around the Freeman Coliseum, Frost Bank Center area, and funding for a new multipurpose area designed primarily as a home venue for the San Antonio Spurs. Closer to home, Northeast Independent School District (NEISD) is proposing five (A through E) Propositions that will consider funding for a multitude of projects throughout the district. As always, there’s a lot of homework to do before you vote. You can get an electronic version of the generic ballot at: https://www.bexar.org/DocumentCenter/ View/43464/Generic-Sample-Ballot-Printable-PDF?bidId= Light-Up is Coming! This years’ theme is “Storybook Christmas.” The first event will be our Dedication Tree on Wednesday, November 12. Seems early for “Light-Up”, but we actually have two events in November and our signature “Light-Up Kick-Off Celebration” is the first week in December. Here are the early events:

• Wednesday, November 12 | 6:00 PM: Dedication Tree Lighting Ceremony at the corner of Jim Seal and Crestway

• Wednesday, November 19 | 6:00 PM: Candy Cane Lane at Windway & Patriot Island

• Saturday, December 6 | 4:30 PM: Light-Up Celebration Kickoff at 8601 Midcrown Dr.

Update on Windcrest International Business Park (WIBP). On Tuesday, September 23rd, I organized a tour of WIBP with Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Calvert, the owner of WIBP (who flew in from Ohio for the tour), our EDC Team, and the commercial real estate group that is marketing the site. It was a very productive tour! Commissioner Calvert was very excited about the property and the potential. We are planning a gathering in January that he is tentatively calling a “Future Forecast Forum”. This event will bring together real estate professionals and developers from the area to highlight the potential of the site and the area around it. One other item I am working on with Commissioner Calvert is a Bexar Countywide animal adoption event; we should have details soon!

“Coffee with the Mayor” continues to be very helpful for me as well as for those who can participate. We begin at 8:30AM at Las Palapas on Walzem. You are welcome to come and go as you please and have coffee, soda or tea on me! — Dan Reese

The Importance of Board Training in Economic Development

The dedicated volunteer board members of the WEDC tirelessly invest their time and expertise without compensation, playing an indispensable role in driving economic development. Their commitment to fostering community prosperity is amplified through comprehensive board training, which equips them with critical skills and knowledge to guide the organization effectively. By deepening their understanding of economic trends, financial management, and strategic planning, these selfless leaders make informed, impactful decisions that spur growth and strengthen our communities. The unwavering dedication of our volunteer board members, combined with their pursuit of ongoing training, ensures our organization is exceptionally well-positioned to tackle the challenges of economic development and deliver lasting benefits. Each WEDC Board member completes the mandatory Open Meetings Act and Public Information Act training annually, a testament to their diligence and responsibility as stewards of public trust.

Among the outstanding training options available to our commendable WEDC Board and Staff is the Basic Economic Development Course, which provides a thorough foundation in key concepts and strategies essential for success in economic development. Additionally, the Sales Tax Workshop offers invaluable insights into the complexities of sales tax regulations, compliance, and strategic tax planning. Our board members who have participated in these courses consistently praise their depth and relevance, noting how the knowledge and practical tools gained empower them to excel in an ever-evolving economic landscape.

Furthermore, our volunteer board members generously take advantage of numerous free training opportunities designed to sharpen their skills and foster connections with fellow professionals. These initiatives not only enhance their expertise but also build meaningful relationships with other dedicated leaders, further amplifying their impact.

We are deeply grateful for the extraordinary efforts of our volunteer board members, whose commitment to continuous learning and service drives our mission forward. F.D. NEWS FIRE DEPARTMENT

Deep Fried Disaster: The Turkey Fryer Files

Ahhhh, November, the smell of stuffing, sound of football, and annual tradition of calling the Windcrest Fire Department because someone decided to fry a turkey on the porch next to the wooden fence under the patio awning. Spoiler: fire plus turkey oil equals a holiday memory nobody wants in the scrapbook.

Turkey fryers are basically medieval torture devices disguised as cooking appliances. Too much oil? Hot grease volcano. Frozen bird? Backyard fireworks. Try to sneak it into the garage because it is “too windy”? Congratulations, you just invented a new open-concept kitchen.

Here is the deal:

• Fry outside, far away from your house.

• Defrost the bird completely. (No, cousin Eddie, you cannot use the leaf blower on the turkey.)

• Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Remember, garden hoses are for tulips, not flaming poultry.

Every year, the Windcrest Fire Department responds to fryer mishaps that could have been avoided with a little patience and a lot fewer “hold my beer” moments. Trust us, nothing says awkward Thanksgiving like explaining to your neighbor why their trampoline is now seasoned with Cajun drippings.

This year, roast it, bake it, smoke it, heck, let Grandma boil it if she insists. Just keep the flames on the candles and off the turkey.

From all of us at the Windcrest Fire Department, may your Thanksgiving be happy, safe, and only slightly overcooked.

Thanksgiving Safety

The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially at Thanksgiving. Kids love to be involved in holiday preparations. Safety in the kitchen is important, especially on Thanksgiving Day when there is a lot of activity in the home.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips:

• Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food.

• Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.

• Keep children away from the stove. Stoves will be hot, and kids should stay 3 feet away.

• Make sure kids stay away from hot food/liquids. Steam or splashes from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.

• Keep floors clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, or bags.

• Keep knives out of reach of children.

• Ensure cords from electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.

• Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children-up high in a locked cabinet.

Did you know?

Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home fires involving cooking equipment.

Remember:

November 2nd daylight savings time starts. When your clocks fall back 1 hour remember to change your smoke detector batteries.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

Greetings from the Windcrest Police Department!

School Zone Safety:

We are still in the early months of the school year, which means an increase in pedestrian traffic, especially in the mornings and afternoons. Please slow down in school zones and watch for children walking or riding bicycles. You will continue to see our dedicated Windcrest Police Officers and Windcrest Citizens Patrol members at the crosswalk in front of Windcrest Elementary School. Please pay close attention to their traffic direction as they ensure children and parents cross safely.

Crime Prevention – Vehicle Break-Ins

Never leave ANY valuable items in plain sight in your vehicle. Thieves often look for quick opportunities, an unlocked car or highly visible valuables make for an easy target.

Coming soon!

We are in the beginning stages of putting together the first ever Windcrest Public Safety Citizens Academy! Our tentatively scheduled start date is Wednesday February 4th, 2026. Stay tuned for more details!

THANK YOU!

A heartfelt thank you to all those who took part in and/or helped out with both the National Night Out and Trunk or Treat Events.

“The police are the people, and the people are the police.”

CODE ENFORCEMENT & COMPLIANCE

From Alley Cats Allies:

Windcrest just had a class for our TNR program here at Takas Park and thank you to all who attended!! San Antonio Feral Cat Coalition also offers Trap-Neuter-Return classes online or a class at their new offices. Please check on their website for more information.

If you are feeding a cat or kitten that has wandered into your yard and adopted you, city code requires you to take this class. We are only talking about an hour and a half of your time. These classes have lots of good information about how TNR works and why it is the best program for our community cats.

TxWeACT also would like to encourage residents to be fosters for either dogs or cats. Since our city does not have their own facility to house our stray population, we are in constant need of folks who would be willing to house a dog or cat for a period of time while the city looks for a new home for them. You get all the joy of loving on an animal without the long term commitment of owning one. You can contact an animal control officer at city hall for more information.

Hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Meetings: the 4th Tuesday of the month 210-562-0299

This is the season when our trees start to lose leaves again, remember to pick up the leaves as this not only makes your yard look untidy but it also can become a hazard. Unwanted critters such as garden snakes and spiders will hide under leaves piled up by the wind. The morning mist can cause the leaves to become slippery and cause you to fall. Forgotten items in your yard can also get covered up by the leaves creating yet another fall hazard.

Please refer to our city code of ordinance at www.windcrest-tx.gov/code and report any ordinance concerns to www.windcrest-tx.gov/report.

ANIMAL CARE & CONTROL

This is Ziggy. He is a sweet and playful puppy that enjoys cuddles and kisses. If you would like to adopt him, give us a call at 210-655-2666.

Deer Season

Foods to never feed deer

Human junk food: Bread, chips, cookies, and other processed snacks are very difficult for deer to digest and can cause severe digestive issues.

Corn: A high-carbohydrate food that can lead to lactic acidosis, causing the digestive system to shut down.

Processed nuts and seeds: These often contain added sweeteners, spices, and preservatives that deer can't properly digest.

Livestock feed: While it may seem like a good idea, it is not a natural food for deer and can lead to health problems.

Check out the city website or come to our local adoption events to see the animals we have available. All dogs that are available for adoption are current on vaccines, spayed/ neutered, and no adoption fees. Also, we need fosters. If you are willing to foster a dog, contact us. We have dogs that need home experience and only you can provide that need.

Certain plants: Some plants, like rhubarb, rhododendron, azaleas, and mountain laurel, are toxic to deer.

Why these foods are harmful

Digestive upset: Deer digestive systems are adapted to break down fibrous, natural vegetation. Sudden changes to highcarbohydrate foods can lead to rumen acidosis, where the gut microbes that digest carbohydrates proliferate and produce lactic acid, which can kill beneficial microbes and disrupt the entire digestive system.

Malnutrition: A sudden influx of "empty calories" from processed foods can lead to malnutrition because the deer cannot properly absorb the necessary nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

Disease and injury: Feeding deer can lead to disease outbreaks, food impaction, and even injuries or death to the animals, other pets, and people.

LIONS CLUB NEWS

WINDCREST Volunteer Group

Get ready Windcrest, our awesome Chili Cornbread dinner is right around the corner. Make sure you mark the 2nd Saturday, November 8th on your calendar! The dinner is at the Takas Park Civic Center. The doors open at 5:00 PM and we’ll serve chili until 7:00 PM. You can also get it to go. Early bird tickets are $8 each, or $10 at the door. So be sure to contact one of your neighborhood Lions Club members and get your tickets early! As always, children under 10 (eating in) are free. We also have vegetarian chili. We can’t wait to see you there. It’s already November, which means Christmas will be here before you know it. This year’s decorating theme is “A Storybook Christmas!”, so start thinking about how you’ll decorate for Light-Up.

The Lions Club is selling greenery again this year. It’s fresh cut, smells great and looks beautiful, you have until Nov. 7th to get your orders in. Hopefully you’ve gotten your orders in already!

If you would like to know more about the Lions Club, please reach out to our Membership Chair, Lion Lea Fagin at leas_fagin@yahoo.com.

The Windcrest Volunteer Group continues to make a meaningful impact in our community, one small act of kindness at a time. Recently, our volunteers assisted a resident who needed help replacing a few light bulbs. While it may seem like a simple task, it made a big difference in her daily comfort and safety at home.

Carolyn S. shared her appreciation, writing: “I want to thank you once again for your recent help with my lighting problems. Not only did you promptly reply to my email request for assistance, but you also managed to get that help to me within one day! Now that my fluorescent kitchen light bulb has been replaced as well as my front porch light, I can function much more comfortably at home... The service provided by the Windcrest Volunteers greatly improved my quality of life.”

Stories like this remind us that being a good neighbor can brighten more than just someone’s home, it can brighten their day! Thank you to all our Windcrest Volunteers for continuing to serve with compassion and community spirit.

Important Updates

As we prepare for another magical Light-Up season, we’d like to share a few important updates about this year’s contest categories.

The “Best in Show” category has been removed from this year’s competition to simplify judging and ensure each display is recognized within its selected category.

Residents wishing to compete for the “Best Use of Theme” award must now select that option on the registration form in addition to their chosen category. This special recognition celebrates the display that best captures this year’s theme, “A Storybook Christmas.”

Please note that all other categories — such as Best Use of Lights — do not require displays to incorporate the theme. Participants are encouraged to get creative and showcase their unique holiday spirit in any style they choose!

We can’t wait to see how our community lights up Windcrest once again this season.

GARDEN CLUB

Hello Garden Club members. We had a successful welcome back September 2nd meeting at the Civic Center. We gathered and donated school supplies to Windcrest Elementary, as well as Camelot and Montgomery Elementary. Our guest speakers were City Councilwoman Cindy Strzelecki and Edward (Dusty) DeHoyos, Director of Public Works. Their presentations centered on the efforts to keep WC vibrant through tree preservation, tree planting, and maintenance of green spaces. We thank the 15 members who supported Lunch and Love on September 27 at the Crossroads Church. Their efforts helped provide nourishing meals to individuals and families from our Windcrest area. Mark your calendar for Nov 11, 10:00 am, Civic Center for the Christmas Cheer event and a special Decorating with Frosting make and take with Gina Giddings. This will be followed by our Dec 2, Civic Center Christmas Potluck, so get your White Elephant Gift and prepare to play Bingo as we say farewell to 2025. All of these events offer

opportunities to show our WC Garden Club spirit of donating gifts and raising funds to help serve our WC neighbors during this holiday season.

Happy Thanksgiving to all our Garden Club members and Windcrest neighbors.
