NOTE FROM THE CITY MANAGER John Sanger,NoblittCity Manager Greetings, SeptemberSanger, isrecognized
• Create a separate kit for each of your vehicles. Take time to learn life-saving skills − such as CPR and first aid, and check your insurance policies and coverage for the hazards you may face, such as floods and tornados. Also, know how to take practical safety steps like shutting off water and gas. We don’t like to think about disasters, but we also need to be prepared. For more information on making a plan, building a kit, or any questions about emergency readiness, visit https://www.ready.gov/kit.
• Keep a supply of water. Remember, one gallon per person per day.
• Keep all important documents in a fireproof/waterproof container.
National Preparedness Month is a great time to get ready for whatever may come your way. Making a plan is the best way to protect yourself and your family. In the event of a disaster, could you make it on your own for several days? After a disaster, you may not have access to medical facilities or grocery stores. Our first responders are among the best. However, when disaster strikes, they may not be able to respond as quickly as we are accustomed to. Planning steps to help get you and your family prepared for a crisis include:
A special thank you goes out to all of our emergency responders. They do an amazing job of keeping us safe every day. Let’s do our part. Be prepared for an emergency. It is the best way to protect yourself and your family during a large-scale emergency until help can arrive. Stay safe, Sanger.
as Disaster Preparedness Month. It was initiated in 2004 by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to promote the importance of being prepared for largescale emergencies. Here in North Texas, outside of tornados, we don’t give much thought to large-scale emergencies. It is hard to imagine a catastrophic event taking place. It is only when events such as the recent fires that destroyed thousands of acres and then major flooding in the Dallas area, where we saw more than 10 inches fall in one day, that we are reminded that we are not untouchable.

Sanger, Texas, has had many clubs and organizations since the early years of its history. Some of the clubs included: • Bolivar Masonic Lodge No. 418, chartered in 1875
• Sanger Outlaws, young men returning from war, played football against the Era men, the only other football team not in school
From Notes of Mrs. Ballard Powell, Wilson, Oklahoma

• Lions Clubs International was established in the early 1900s
A document housed at the Sanger Area Historical Society was written from notes of Mrs. Ballard Powell of Wilson, Oklahoma. A celebration was held to celebrate the many years of Sanger’s Wednesday Study Club. As the club was twenty years old in 1949 during Mrs. Toon’s term of office, a fitting celebration was enjoyed honoring Past Presidents of the club. As a birthday gift, Mrs. Chambers had written a history of the club, and Mr. and Mrs. Toon had assisted by printing it. Mrs. Glenn Waide arranged the program and the high point was Mrs. Chambers reviewing the history. Afterward, members and guests ate baked ham, frozen fruit salad, and pineapple sherbet. Mrs. Chambers was honored with a gift of an orchid on a white Bible. It was a gala day. Inspired by being so honored, the Past Presidents organized a Past Presidents’ Club. This organization met each year on Reassembly Day, usually in a home. The members then attended the Reassembly Luncheon. A donation to Clovis Crockett Scholarship was made each year. This continued happily for twenty years. Those who served as president of Varied Arts should be listed here. Since the Literature Department and Modern Era are still active, their past presidents are listed in the current yearbook. Varied Arts presidents were: Mmes. R.C. Freeman, H.W. Perry, Edwin Horst, C.D. Allen, L.T. Herby, Garland Henderson, and Henry ThroughoutCooper.the years, each president had marked their administration with their personality. Mrs. Samuel and Mrs. McCarroll were musicians. Their terms leaned toward that art. In 1947, Chloe presented a North Texas University sorority a delightful program of Christmas music in the Methodist Church. The whole community attended. Cletus Freeman’s artistic talent was encouraged, and

custom much enjoyed was the annual dinner honoring husbands of members and other guests. Probably the best attended of these was in 1947, with seventy-five in attendance. This was held in the gym with a Gay Nineties theme. Mrs. Glenn Waide was Master of Ceremonies. Music was of that period, as were decorations. Dr. Imogene Bentley, Dean of Women at N.T.U. spoke on the Gay Nineties theme. As the membership increased, much community work was done without neglecting club work. There was volunteer war work, and the club bought a Liberty bond; some rolled bandages for the Red Cross. The club supported cancer research, March of Dimes, Athletic Fund of the high school, library, Sanger Cemetery, local scholarship funds, and restoring the GFWC clubhouse. In 1951, the club voted to underwrite the publishing of a book of Tennie Byrd Powell’s poetry. Each member was to sell ten or more books personally. It was accomplished, and in three months, the project was completed. From 1960-61 the club began losing members. Some moved away, and some accepted jobs. As a result, one department was dispersed, Varied Arts and its remaining memberships were absorbed by the Literature Department. Mrs. Schafer’s energy and enthusiasm was the prime factor. It had fifty members and met monthly with a covered dish luncheon, program, and table games in the afternoon. The club’s history is distinguished and glowing, but it does not live on its past achievements. It moves with the times. In early years, members researched and B.R. Bentley’s Bolivar Oil Company store The Sanger “Bench” left to right Will Shafer, Ed Nance, and Art Seely in front of Gentle’s Grocery.
9 members of the club and others of the community took part in a club-sponsored art exhibit at the general meeting in 1948. The club won first place in State for art activities. In the early decades, there was a seated tea at Thanksgiving, beautifully arranged with a guest artist, and Mrs. Berry’s Colonial Tea in the early 1940s. Officers in the house party wore colonial costumes. A special guest that year was Mrs. Hattie Hamill Wilfong, District President, living then in Gainesville. At one of these seated affairs in Mrs. Harris’ home, Miss Stella Len Owsley of Denton Anothersang.

The current day Wednesday Study Club in Sanger is still strong with 20+ ladies from the community. Membership dropped a little due to COVID, but the current active members are still enthused about their organization and always welcoming new members. The Club is a social, learning, and philanthropic organization donating to various programs. Some of their donations have gone to the following: Blue Ribbon Club – Bartonville Texas Education Clubs State Mary Caruthers Art Scholarship M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital Rusty Armstrong Memorial Scholarship San Rayburn Bonham Memorial Veterans Center Area Historical Society and Museum Bargain Depot Sanger Independent School District Outreach Public McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center

Names, places, events, faces; what warm memories they bring us! Not all names can be mentioned, and some of the most noteworthy have been left out. The loyal members, devoted to the club and its leaders alike, stayed out of the limelight and did more than their share of club duties. It was they who made the history we’ve related here, and to them, all honor is due.

presented programs. As times change, programs were given by guest speakers and artists. At the twentieth birthday party, Jimmie Wilson Waide made the statement that is still true. “The Club was organized for study and cultural growth. It has been a long journey but a happy one. The road is not always smooth. Sometimes it leads up steep grades, sometimes detours, but one always knows where it is going.”
