Letter from Ward 4 Reno Councilmember

Bonnie Weber Dear Neighbors,

It has been nine months since I was honored to be elected as your City of Reno Ward 4 Councilmember. These past months have flown by and we’ve been busy at work in Ward 4!

Civic engagement and pride in our neighborhoods is very important to me. On June 14, 2019, our community came out and celebrated Flag Day. We were joined by the Reno Police Department, the Reno Fire Department, Sierra Nevada Job Corps, and community members as we raised a new U.S. flag at the spruced-up area around the Welcome to Stead sign.

I’m proud of the restored pride in Dorothy McAlinden Park and the cleanups we’ve hosted there. What a difference a couple of hours of service can make in the appearance of this Stead jewel.

This summer, we hosted a fascinating tour of the Reno-Stead Water Reclamation Facility, which was expertly led by Public Works Director John Flansberg and his staff member.

It is an impressive and sparkling facility and the tour gave us a much better understanding of this facility that most of us take for granted every day. It is truly a hidden powerhouse behind our homes. Our tax dollars are hard at work there.

Last but not least, I hope to see you at the Takeoff Celebration on Saturday, September 7 at the RenoStead Airport. Stead is the home of the National Championship Air Races and this event will bring the air races to all members of the community.

This free event will include a parade, flyover, and airplane and car show and shine. I hope to see you there!

The City of Reno is working on a lot of projects and getting caught up is no small task. To introduce myself, I am a Reno native and I have practiced law in the area for nearly twenty years. As a father of three, our community is a deep passion of mine, and I’m excited to be a part of guiding Reno into the future.

Affordable housing, economic growth and opportunity, arts and culture, and a strong sense of community are all top priorities of mine and I will continue working with fellow Councilmembers to make decisions that are best for our residents.

I look forward to meeting you soon, and in the meantime, I hope you can attend Councilmember Weber’s Takeoff Celebration! There is no better opportunity to enjoy one of Reno’s prime attractions, the Reno Air Races. See you soon!

Routes

To better serve the community, we will be sweeping Reno streets according to a specific schedule. Want to know when your route will be covered?

Below you will find the days of the month we are going to be sweeping in each route and the route maps.

Please keep in mind that this is a seasonal activity (April-October).

How you can help • Trim your trees away from the curb line allowing the sweepers a clear path to sweep along the curb.

• Move parked cars prior to your assigned sweeping schedule.

Community Engagement City Council Meetings Meetings are usually held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, starting at 10:00 a.m. in Council Chambers, 1st floor of City Hall. If you can’t make a meeting but would like to provide public comment, you can submit it online.

Boards and Commissions With over 50 board and commissions, there’s a wide array of focuses for citizens to engage. From the Neighborhood Advisory Boards to the Access Advisory Committee or the newly formed Human Rights Commission, we hope you find an area of interest and apply.

Neighborhood speeding and distracted driving can be dangerous, and we want to assure you and your neighbors that the Reno Police Department is committed to making our city safe and accessible for all pedestrians.

We’ve heard resident concerns about traffic issues in your neighborhood and I’d like

to remind you, especially as summer is upon us, to please continue to drive cautiously through your streets, follow residential speed limits, and most importantly, stay alert!

The Code Enforcement Team enforces regulations and laws related to: • Existing buildings and structures that are unsafe or present a danger to the public • Building code violations including building without permits • Housing code violations including minimum standards for safe and sanitary conditions • Zoning code violations including use, location, size, parking and land use • Nuisances, including: • Weeds • Outdoor storage • Trash and debris

• Junk vehicles • Overgrown vegetation • Abandoned vehicles

Do I have to give my name?

No, you can remain completely anonymous. The city will not release complainant information. However, it is helpful for the Code Officer to have a reporting party especially if they need more information or would like to provide an update.

Reno is known as “The Biggest Little City in the World.” Reno is famous for its casinos and as the birthplace of Caesars Entertainment Corporation. It is the county seat of Washoe County, located in the northwestern part of the state.

The city sits in a high desert at the foot of the Sierra Nevada and its downtown area occupies a valley known as the Truckee Meadows. Reno is the largest metropolitan area in Northern Nevada.

Tips

When to call 9-1-1 Emergencies that require immediate attention from police, fire or ambulance services and include: • ALL crimes in progress • Major crimes that have just occurred • Any call with the potential for injury or death • Any medical emergency • Any type of fire

When calling 9-1-1

• Know the location of the emergency • Stay calm and speak clearly • Answer the dispatcher's questions • Stay on the phone (if it’s safe to do so) and do not hang up until the dispatcher tells you to do so

Texting 9-1-1 Texting 9-1-1 is beneficial to those who are hard of hearing, deaf, or speech-impaired, but residents should only text 9-1-1 when calling 9-1-1 is unsafe or not possible.

CALL if you can, TEXT if you can’t

• Include the location and type of help needed • Answer questions and instructions • Do not power off your phone until a dispatcher tells you to do so

Create a fire escape plan that shows two ways out of every room.

Ensure everyone knows where the safe meeting place is outside the home.

Everyone living in the house should practice the escape plan two times a year.

Cooking safety Leave no items that can burn around any cooking area.

Ensure someone stays in the kitchen when they are frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food.

Ensure pot handles are always turned toward the back of the stove.

Smoke Detectors Located on every level of the home.

Located inside and outside sleeping areas.

Test every month by listening for the noise when you press the “test” button.

Batteries are changed yearly.

Should not be more than ten years old.

Candle Safety Place in a sturdy fire-proof container that will not tip over.

Blow out all candles when leaving the room or going to sleep.

Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Electrical & appliance safety Ensure electrical cords are in good condition and not broken or cut.

Clean dryer lint after every use.

Ensure electrical outlets are safe and do not feel warm when touched. If they are warm, call the landlord or an electrician.

Carbon monoxide alarms Located on every level of the home.

Should not be more than seven years old.

Fire Safety To prevent children from starting fires, lock up matches, lighters, cigarettes, candles, etc.

Dispose of fireplace ashes property.
