Celebrating the 100th Anniversar y of Fire Prevention Week

CONTRIBUTED BY MIRAMAR FIRE DEPARTMENT

In a fire, mere seconds can mean the dif ference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Today’s homes burn faster than ever You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning Fire safety education isn’t just for school children Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Pre vention Week to make sure they under stand how to stay safe in case of a fire This year ’s campaign, “Fire won’t wait Plan your escape™, works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires.

HOME FIRE ESCAPE PLANNING AND PRACTICING

It is important for everyone to plan and practice a home fire escape Everyone

needs to be prepared in advance, so that they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds Given that every home is different, every home fire escape plan will also be different Have a plan for everyone in the home Children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assis tance to wake up and get out Make sure that someone will help them!

SMOKE ALARMS

Smoke alarms sense smoke well before you can, alerting you to danger Smoke alarms need to be in every bedroom, out side of the sleeping areas (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of your home Do not put smoke alarms in your kitchen or bathrooms Choose an alarm that is listed with a testing labora tory, meaning it has met certain standards for protection For the best protection, use combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that are interconnected throughout the home These can be installed by a qualified electrician, so that when one sounds, they all sound This ensures you can hear the alarm no matter where in your home the alarm originates

A time to raise awareness of the issue and support survivors

What is an Abusive Relationship?

According to the National Coalition against Domestic Violence, battering is defined as a pattern of behavior used t o e s t a b l i s h p o w e r a n d c o n t r o l o v e r a n o t h e r p e r s o n through fear and intimidation, often including the threat or use of violence Domestic violence can occur anywhere and to anyone regardless of socio economic status, gen d e r, r a c e , r e l i g i o n , e t h n i c i t y, s e x u a l o r i e n t a t i o n , e d u c a tional background, etc It is a crime of manipulation that anyone can fall prey to It is important to recognize signs of domestic violence to be able to combat against it

RED FLAGS OF ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP

Often, people question why a person would stay in an abu sive relationship It is important to understand that anybody can be a victim of domestic violence The abuser uses power to manipulate and control a person Also, fear often con tributes to why a person may stay in an abusive relationship The victim/survivor may be motivated by love to stay, but it is important to remember that the abuser is not motivated by feelings of love or intimacy Love should never hurt some

one Rather than question why a victim/survivor of domestic violence stays in an abusive relationship, let’s turn our focus to holding the abuser accountable, and question why they would choose to harm and endanger someone Yes, batterers can control their behavior

Millions of people are abused each year, but there is help out there. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic vi olence, it is important to get help The following numbers are resources that a survivor may find helpful:

August was observed as Black Business Month and the city recognized several black owned businesses and the contribution made to the city Of the many criteria to cop the top award, companies must show how they are in volved in the community Transcend Perform ance Auto, in its 10 year existence since opening its doors in 2012, launched an initiative called “Transcend Youth Program” that trains youth to become mechanics and intern at their auto shop The auto shop also fields candidates from Broward College and McPhatter Technical College and equip the students with hands on skills training, preparation for state exams as well as ensuring the right areas of study are se lected to break into the field

FINDING CAPITAL

Other business leaders and professionals that were on hand at the round table discussion were treated to musical entertainment and po etry, an interlude from the robust discussions from the expert panel that kept the audience engaged and informed One of the main themes around the discussion was how busi nesses can survive amid a crisis and how cities can help them stay afloat and thrive There was also an emphasis on navigating one’s business net worth and network to bring critical visibil ity to their establishments to grow incremen tally from the closest in your circle and expand outward

During an April 2022 survey, 21 6 percent1 of surveyed small businesses in the United States claimed that the COVID 19 pandemic had a large negative effect on business The positive news is that though some businesses in Miramar had shut their doors, and lost revenue, many were able to re open with the help of the local and federal pro grams afforded to business owners, most of them small businesses Attendees were able to hear from both city officials and the panelists about where and how to find much needed capital in a crisis as well as in non crisis situations, for example if they desire to scale their business

More information can be found on the City’s Small business hub at: https://www miramarfl gov/1849/Small Busi ness Hub

Miramar continues to be a city where busi nesses can thrive and take full advantage of re sources available Since 2021, the number of home based businesses has been on the increase and the city provides resources to these and all types of business ventures as it recognizes that small businesses employ over 60% of the work force in America and is the bedrock of what makes a city grow and expand

New Public Website Makes it Easier for Property Owners to Access Flood Risk Data for Individual Properties

The City of Miramar is always striving to find new ways to ensure compliance with the requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the Community Rating System (CRS) In fact, the City has recently partnered with Forerunner Industries Inc., a Delaware based software company, to digitize the City’s floodplain management program, thereby creat ing significant efficiencies for City staff by aggregating disparate flood information into a single dashboard and automating many workflows and reports The Forerun ner application will go a long way in helping the City increase the number of creditable activities it can submit to the Federal Management Agency (FEMA) for its CRS cycle verification, which can lead to higher CRS rating and therefore greater flood insurance discounts

The City’s official website now features a link to a public version of the Forerunner application for the City for all community members to access available flood risk data for individual properties The site will make it easier for homeowners, contractors, insurance agents, and realtors to learn about a property’s flood related risk and potential insurance compliance require ments

The public website can be accessed online at: https://miramarfl withfore runner com/ and will enable community members to perform the following searches:

SEARCH FOR A PROPERTY’S FLOOD RISK:

Each property in the City will have a unique public profile with available flood data Community members can now search for a property on the home page by address to find its flood zone, FEMA provided Base Flood Eleva tion (BFE) Design Flood Elevation (DFE), important flood compliance related warnings, and more

FIND ELEVATION CERTIFICATES AND OTHER IMPORTANT FLOOD RELATED DOCUMENTS FOR A PROPERTY:

Need an Elevation certificate for a permit or for insurance purposes? If there is document on file, community members can now find it in the search able Elevation Certificate page , or on the property’s unique public profile saving the cost of getting a new one

REVIEW SUBSTANTIAL IMPROVEMENT/ SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE INFORMATION FOR A PROPERTY:

Homeowners seeking to make improvements to a property may unknow ingly nearing the property’s substantial improvement threshold, i e , im provements in the last 5 years amounting to half of the assessed value of the current structure on the property The site contains a property’s previous im provement or damages that will help community members understand pos sible limitations to their plans

SURVIVING A RECESSION

Are concerns about inflation making you de pressed? Careful planning may be able to assist.

Are we in a reces s i o n o r n o t ? T h e fear of one has been c a u s i n g c o n s u m e r s s o m e d i ff i c u l t y H o w e v e r, p e o p l e a n d t h e i r w a l l e t s a r e c u r r e n t l y e n g a g e d i n a g a m e o f “ t o u c h a n d g o ” N o m a t t e r where you fall on the fear spectrum, I’ve g i v e n y o u a f e w t r i c k s t o k e e p i n y o u r b a c k p o c k e t f o r w h e n i t ’s t i m e t o s t a r t t h r i v i n g r a t h e r t h a n j u s t s u r v i v i n g , r e gardless of what the economy does THE KEY IS PREPARATION & FLEXIBILITY!

HERE ARE EIGHT SUGGESTIONS FOR THRIVING DURING A RECESSION RATHER THAN ONLY SURVIVING.

Start budgeting (track your income and your expense)

The only way to allay your anxieties is to

be aware of how much money is coming into the house and to keep track of what you are spending it on Take charge of your life By managing your spending, you are making sure that you are only purchasing necessities

2 Try to save as much cash as you can (after every payday, pay yourself first)

Saving even a small sum of money each month will help you create an inflation hedge This will allow you to get rid of un necessary objects To start your savings plan, start with a budget (See advice #1 )

3 Plan to pay off debts and refrain from taking on more loans (with current high interest rates, it is not a good time to borrow money)

As a result, your monthly expenses will go down and you’ll have more money to pay for rising living expenses

4. Cut expenses (this can lead to mean ingful savings)

T h i s c o u l d e n t a i l p r i o r i t i z i n g y o u r e x p e n d i t u re s w h e re y o u w i l l b e n e f i t t h e m o s t o r d e l e t i n g s o m e o f y o u r m e m b e r s h i p s a n d s e r v i c e s t h a t y o u d o n ’t n e e d A l t h o u g h d e a l i n g w i t h i n f l a t i o n m i g h t b e c h a l l e n g i n g , y o u c a n i n c re a s e y o u r f i n a n c i a l s e c u r i t y i n t h e l o n g r u n b y

m a k i n g s o m e s a c r i f i c e s t o d a y

5 Change up your grocery list (buy in bulk if you must)

Play the game of price comparison while shopping at surrounding establishments Try choosing a different brand or generic version of a product if you often buy name brands Consider buying the same goods in the frozen foods section rather than buying fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats They could cost you up to 50% less while being just as healthy and last longer

6 Putting money into your own devel opment by acquiring recession proof tal ents (learn more to earn more).

Another strategy to deal with the rising cost of products and services is to increase the amount of money you make each month To keep various income streams active, start a side business Perhaps you have a hobby that could be developed into a suc cessful side business Selling any unwanted objects that are laying about your house gathering dust is another strategy to increase the amount of money in your wallet

7

mind that others may be experiencing the

same challenges with inflation as you)

If there is a network of individuals who can help you during these times, reach out to them If you have relatives or friends who can help, make sure to let them know ahead of time You should also have a plan in place that specifies how long you will need the help in case it is offered

8 Take advantage of resources avail able and apply for grants (rental assis tance, purchase assistance programs, utility assistance, etc )

• The City of Miramar has the following program to assist its residents

• First time Homebuyer Program

• CARES Act Emergency Assistance CDBG CV3

• Minor Home Rehabilitation

• Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) Purchase Assistance and Home Re habilitation

• Residential Utility

• Micro Enterprise Grant Assistance Pro gram

Visit our website at www miramarfl gov for more information on each program

Stay calm, stay positive, your mindset determines your outcome I believe in you!
