MIRAMAR

New Workforce Housing to be Constructed in Historic Miramar

Located at the Northwest corner of SW 68th Avenue/SW 34th Street the area known as Wellman Field is the location for the proposed workforce housing initiative called ParcView Townhomes, which will be a mix of two and three-bedroom townhouses and made available for families earning under 120% of the AMI.

SCOPE

The scope of the project includes 66 town-house units ranging from 1,200 SF – 1,500 SF two-story dwellings. Of the 66 units, 8 will be 2-bedroom/2.5-bathroom units and 58 will be 3-bedroom/2.5-bathroom units with a choice of 4 floor plan variations.

AMENITIES

ParcView Townhomes is close to several amenities such as the Miramar Aquatic Centre, Shirley Branca Park and Bandshell, and VEH Youth Enrichment Center. There will be a passive park, walking trail and a playground.

HISTORIC MIRAMAR

When the City of Miramar became incorporated in 1955, the city expanded its service to the community with the addition of police stations, schools, and educational facilities. Today, many of the original buildings and facilities are still in existence, however, the aim of all expansion in East Miramar is to continue to grow the city but maintain the charm of historic Miramar to preserve the city’s history.

Stated Mayor Wayne Messam.

For information about ParcView Townhomes, visit MiramarFL.gov/Housing

“This project is a great opportunity for the residents of Miramar as it brings workforce housing to a beautiful area of our community where folks will have access to great education, parks, retail, and food options. I applaud the City of Miramar’s leadership in helping us redefine affordable housing. We are building a region for everyone.”

FROM THE CITY MANAGER’S OFFICE

DR. ROY L. VIRGIN

by:

Less than 1% of Earth’s water is considered fresh water. Fresh water is the source by which drinking water is produced.

In the City of Miramar, fresh water taken from two underground aquifer systems is treated to meet drinking water standards set forth by Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies and is distributed to our residents and businesses through a piping network.

The Earth is considered a closed system meaning no “new” water can be added. Therefore, the finite water we have should be preserved and protected for current and future generations to have safe, drinking water.

Join us to conserve water.

Helpful conservation tips that will save you money on your utility bill:

• Locate and fix leaky faucets inside your homes.

• Utilize the load sensing option on dishwashers and washing machines or operate at full loads.

• Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.

• Install plumbing retrofits such as low-flow aerators and showerheads which are available in the conservation kits provided by the City of Miramar.

• Check toilets for leaks by adding dye or leak detection tablets (available upon request) inside the tank, wait a few minutes and if the color is visible inside the bowl, you have a leak.

• Replace older toilets using the rebates available through the city.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR WAYNE M. MESSAM

As we reflect on the future of our vibrant city, I am filled with optimism and excitement. Miramar continually evolves through various developments, initiatives, and events that foster a thriving community.

SAY NO TO THE INCINERATOR

As we approach nearly 70 years of progress, preserving the beauty and advancement of our city remains paramount. One critical issue we face is MiamiDade’s proposal to build an incinerator near our city’s border. We must stand firm against this project, ensuring our voices are heard and our environment is protected. I urge you to continue spreading the word about signing the petition at Miramarfl.gov/NOBURN or scan the QR code below and call the Miami-Dade commissioners. You can find their contact details on the same website. Let us remind them that we will not accept an incinerator in our backyard. There is a viable alternative in Medley, Florida that does not jeopardize the health and well-being of our residents and our neighbors in SW Ranches, Weston, Pembroke Pines, and beyond.

HEALTHY COMMUNITY

Our residents are our greatest asset, shaping Miramar into the community we love. This is why we place a strong emphasis on promoting health and wellness. I am delighted to share the ongoing success of our Caribbean Dance Class –Soca Step in Miramar, held every second Friday of each month. This program, with the lively rhythms of Soca music, provides a unique way to stay fit and connected with fellow residents. Join us for sessions at the City Hall Plaza, which promises plenty of fun. Zumba classes are held every Thursday at Sunset Lakes Community from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm and feel free to attend Yoga classes at the Miramar Cultural Center Botanical Gardens every Saturday from 10 am –11 am. All these activities are free and open to residents.

CELEBRATING A CULTURE

Looking ahead to summer, I am thrilled to highlight our upcoming Emancipendence celebration on Saturday, August 3, 1 pm – 9 pm at the Regional Park Amphitheater. This annual event commemorates the emancipation and independence of the Caribbean nation of Jamaica, celebrating the rich cultural heritage that makes Miramar unique. Expect vibrant performances, delicious cuisine, and a joyful atmosphere as we come together to honor this significant occasion. This event is just one of many celebrating the rich and diverse culture found in Miramar.

FLOOD INSURANCE - NEW FEMA FLOOD MAPS AFFECTING 20K MIRAMAR HOMES

In light of recent weather patterns and the impact of climate change, addressing the need for flood insurance is more important than ever. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has issued an updated map indicating areas that now require flood insurance. Visit MiramarFL.withforerunner.com to check if you are impacted. With over 20,000 homes in Miramar included in this updated map, protecting your property is crucial. I encourage all residents to explore flood insurance options and ensure they have the necessary coverage by July 31, 2024. For more information, please visit our city’s website or contact our dedicated team at 954-602-HELP for assistance.

YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL

I am also excited to share the success of our Youth Advisory Council, which allows high school students to learn about local government and volunteer in various aspects of the city. Applications are now open to students at Miramarfl. gov/youthadvisorycouncil.

As your Mayor, my commitment to you remains unwavering. Together, we have achieved remarkable progress, and I am confident that our collaborative spirit will continue to drive Miramar forward. Whether advocating for our community’s interests, promoting health and wellness, celebrating our cultural heritage, or ensuring the safety of our homes, we are united in our efforts.

Thank you for your continued support and engagement. I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and working alongside you to make Miramar the best place to live, work, and play.

ALEXANDRA P. DAVIS VICE MAYOR Putting You First... Keeps Us First

As we step into summer, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the recent graduates and share my excitement for the vibrant season ahead. This spring, I proudly spearheaded several initiatives aimed at enhancing community engagement, fostering prosperity, and ensuring the well-being of our residents in Miramar. These initiatives reflect my commitment to creating a thriving and inclusive community.

Monarch Lakes Park is now open again! On March 18th, I hosted a ribbon cutting as we re-introduced the long-awaited Monarch Lakes Park. The 15-acre park includes a walking trail with signage, pavilions with charcoal grills, bathrooms, a state of the art playground, more parking, and a press button splash pad.

On April 4th, I hosted the Apprenticeship Fair, which provided valuable alternatives to traditional college education. This event, in partnership with various organizations, highlighted the high demand for trade jobs and connected potential apprentices with professionals offering paid programs. Following this, I launched the Miramar Beautification and Neighbors Helping Neighbors initiatives. On April 6th and 21st, myself, city staff and volunteers worked together to improve six (6) homes in our historic community, addressing code violations and assisting residents in enhancing their properties.

Listening to our residents is crucial for our city’s progress. On April 11th, I hosted the Historic Miramar Community Town Hall which provided an invaluable opportunity for residents and business owners to engage directly with city officials, discussing important issues and sharing their visions for our city’s future.

April also marked Volunteer Appreciation Month. On April 9th, I hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Awards Dinner that honored over 200 dedicated volunteers from 19 boards, showing our deep appreciation for their invaluable service to the community. Their contributions are a testament to the strength and spirit of our community.

We must do all we can to get rid of the scourge of domestic violence mainly perpetrated against women as well as other forms of abuse. To address domestic violence and other forms of abuse, On April 25th, I spearheaded the Safe House Program, which designates our fire stations as places of refuge and support. This initiative, aligned with the Safehaven and Safeplace programs, ensures that help is always available for those in need.

In recognition of Autism Acceptance Month, I led an Autism Walk and Resource Fair on April 27th. This event, in collaboration with Sea Castle Elementary School and the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD), was warmly received by the community, with strong participation from local schools, staff, vendors, and volunteers.

May brought a series of celebrations, including Haitian Heritage Month, National Youth Apprenticeship Week, and Mother’s Day. On May 7th, I hosted a national youth apprenticeship week ice cream social gathering for young participants of the city’s apprenticeship program, celebrating over a decade of success in producing skilled, certified professionals. On May 10th, the Haitian Heritage Celebration featured vibrant performances by Dadou Pasquet and Darline Desca, with Mecca serving as the emcee, showcasing the rich culture and history of Haiti. On May 11th, I celebrated mothers with my annual Mothers’ Day Brunch and Movie event.

Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world. On May 25th, we welcomed the 8ft Cricket Ball and Billy the Marlin to Miramar as we celebrated the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup coming to Broward County.

June was a vibrant month filled with a variety of activities that brought our residents together. We began on June 4th with a kickoff of Caribbean-American Heritage Month right here in the City of Miramar which outlined all the activities for the month. The Community and Public Safety event on June 8th was a great success, providing an opportunity for residents to meet our public safety personnel and learn about the programs

offered by our fire and police departments.

Our annual Taste of the Caribbean Islands event on June 22nd at our new venue was a tremendous success as we celebrated the rich contributions of Caribbean-Americans in our community. The event featured steel drum music, moko jumbies, and live performances by Farmer Nappy, Visions Band, Alomako, and Gem Meyers, as well as a special celebration of Grenada’s 50th year of independence.

On June 27th, we hosted our annual Job Fair, which featured vendors in industries such as engineering, finance, government, law, and healthcare. Residents had the opportunity to interact with employers and apply for a wide range of job opportunities.

Finally, on June 29th, I partnered with Memorial Healthcare System to kick off their One City at a Time Summer Health Fair. This family-friendly event offered free medical exams and screenings, Medicaid eligibility services, and much more, ensuring our residents had access to essential health services. In addition, Mobile Medical Clinics will be available for adults and children in three (3) Miramar locations – three (3) days per week from July 2nd – September 30th. For more information, please visit MiramarFL. gov or MHS.net.

These initiatives reflect my unwavering dedication to making Miramar a better place for all. I look forward to continuing this momentum and further engaging with our vibrant community in the months ahead. Together, we are building a prosperous and inclusive future for Miramar. Until next time. Always remember putting you first, keeps us first!

MESSAGE FROM COMMISSIONER WINSTON F. BARNES

Miramarians one and all,

The Month of June, the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane season, started with predictions of an unusual season, and we have had torrential rains and accompanying inconveniences. As usual, the staff was aware of the flooded roads and quickly responded accordingly. Regular alerts followed the various events, and sandbags were offered to our residents.

This has served as notice for our residents to prepare for the season in ways that will minimize eventualities and their impact on the community, with the usual robust support from our Fire Department and Police Department.

In fact, the weather and its outcome were so well-managed that we could stage a very successful Beer and Fishing event at the Regional Park on Saturday, June 15, to mark Father’s Day 2024.

As a city, we assisted and accompanied Christway Baptist Church in celebrating its 30th—anniversary, to the delight of church staff and residents.

We also celebrated Haitian-American Month, and the significant number

of residents of that heritage share our Caribbean neighbors’ cultural and historical realities as usual.

For Stroke Awareness Month in May, we also had the pleasure of hosting Smiley’s Voice Foundation’s Carol Hylton and neurosurgeon D. Norman Ajiboye, with whom we recorded an information-sharing video for our website and cable channel.

Various cultural presentations mark Caribbean Heritage Month, but this year, we have the pleasure of hosting a book launch for Jamaican American author and educator Frances Marie Coke. Reviews have congratulated her on her second book, “When Banana Leaf Stain Fades.”

As always, we thank the community for its warm support and participation in our various events and invite one and all to attend our annual School Book Backpack Drive on July 13, 2024, at Lakeshore Park.

In the run-up to the much-anticipated 2024 T20 Cricket World Cup, the City of Miramar in Broward County ushered in the excitement of the upcoming tournament with a giant cricket ball rolling into its City Hall Plaza Complex. Dubbed ‘Giant Cricket Ball Rolls into Miramar’ for the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup, this one-of-a-kind event was held in May 2024 and afforded cricket fans an opportunity to take a selfie with the 400-pound, 8-foot-tall replica cricket ball. So too, cricket fans were able to meet the Miami Marlins’ (major league baseball team) mascot, as well as to win prizes and surprises. In addition, there was free food, hot dogs, burgers, slushies and pan chicken.

Several elected officials from Miramar and other cities were present to not only welcome the Giant Cricket ball, but also to pick up a bat and ball and display their cricket playing skills. The People’s Commissioner, Maxwell Chambers was in full gear and showed off his batting prowess.

Some of the elected officials present were Vice Mayor Alexandra P. Davis, Commissioner Yvette Colbourne, and Commissioner Joy B. Smith of neighboring West Park.

The 2024 T20 World Cup ran from June 1st to 29th in the United States and Caribbean. This event was very historic marking the first time that the United States was co-host to a T20 Cricket World Cup, together with the West Indies.

What is the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup?

The ICC Men’s T20 World cup is the Twenty20 International cricket tournament that, since 2007, has been organized by the International Cricket Council (“ICC”). This event has generally taken place bi-annually and, as of 2022, eight editions have thus far been played featuring a total of 21 competing teams. To date, only the West Indies and England have won the tournament more than once—with each team having won a pair of titles.

More than 2.5 billion people follow and enjoy cricket from around the world. In that spirit, the 2024 T20 Cricket World Cup coming to South Florida is highly anticipated and is set to be both a thrilling affair and an unforgettable event. Twenty teams will be chasing the Cup in the tournament, including: India, Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies, Afghanistan, Canada, Ireland, USA, Namibia, Scotland, Oman, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, Nepal, and Matches are slated to be held at nine venues across the United States and Caribbean (West Indies), such as New York, Dallas, Guyana, Barbados, Antigua, Florida, Trinidad and Tobago, St Vincent, and St Lucia. The Championship match was hosted by the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, June 29, 2024.

MESSAGE FROM COMMISSIONER YVETTE COLBOURNE

Hello Miramar!

We recently held a series of events to celebrate Juneteenth, emphasizing the significance of Black History in American history. The events included an Awards Dinner on June 18 at the Miramar Cultural Center, featuring the esteemed civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton. Rodney Baltimore of Hot105 adeptly served as the master of ceremonies. Reverend Sharpton eloquently highlighted Juneteenth’s historical importance, calling it crucial for fostering community awareness and unity. He stated, “Black History is American history, and Juneteenth is a pivotal moment that must remain at the forefront of our national consciousness.” During the dinner, I had the pleasure of honoring Reverend Sharpton with the keys to the city.

Also, at the event, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson recognized our dedication to community enrichment by making a well appreciated presentation with a Congressional Record, and a presentation of a generous check for one million dollars towards a new community center in the Sherman Circle area, an initiative spearheaded by my office.

The festivities continued June 19th with a well-attended Juneteenth Family Day at City Hall Plaza. Families enjoyed various activities, including hair braiding, bead and doll-making workshops, and engaging book reading sessions, all aimed at fostering cultural pride and creativity. Each child received a free book to promote literacy and community involvement. The day also featured lively performances from local schools, churches, and dance groups, showcasing Miramar’s vibrant talent.

Additionally, the Priscilla Dames Alar Odessey Art Collection, curated by Christopher Norwood, was showcased, featuring African art and artifacts. Juneteenth celebrations are Miramar’s way of bringing together our community to celebrate our shared heritage and the progress we continue to make, these activities underscore the city’s commitment to honoring history, promoting education, and fostering unity among its diverse population.

As Miramar looks towards the future, events like these serve as powerful reminders of the importance of cultural heritage and community solidarity.

As always, One Miramar.

Derac’s academic achievements complement his professional accomplishments. He holds an associate degree in arts from MiamiDade Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Social Work, and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from Florida International University (FIU). Celebrating Six Months of Joy and Community at Our Adult Day Care Center

The past six months have been a whirlwind of joy, laughter, and unforgettable moments at our Adult Day Care Center. We’ve celebrated various events that have brought our community closer together and provided enriching experiences for our seniors.

Valentine’s Day Event: We kicked off the year with a heartwarming Valentine’s Day celebration. Our seniors enjoyed a day filled with love, music, and delicious treats. The event was beautifully decorated with hearts and flowers, creating a festive and loving atmosphere. Couples shared dances, friends exchanged heartfelt cards, and everyone left with a smile, feeling the warmth of community love.

Mother’s Day Brunch: In May, we honored all the wonderful mothers at our center with a special Mother’s Day brunch. The event featured a delicious spread of homemade dishes, heartwarming stories, and live music that had everyone singing along. The highlight was the “Mother of the Year” award, presented to one of our beloved seniors, who shared her inspiring journey of motherhood with everyone present. It was a beautiful way to show appreciation for the incredible mothers among us, and many tears of joy were shed.

Caregiver Support Group: One of our most impactful initiatives has been the caregiver support group. This group meets regularly every third Saturday of the month to provide a space for caregivers to share their experiences, offer mutual support, and learn from each other. Our partnerships with organizations such as Trustbridge, Alzheimer’s Association, Southeast Florida Chapter, The American Red Cross, the Parkinson’s Foundation, Care to Share Inc., Senior Helpers, and Elders Needs Law have been invaluable. These partnerships have allowed us to bring in expert speakers, offer specialized resources, and provide comprehensive support to caregivers who are navigating the challenges of caring for loved ones with conditions like Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, and other age-related issues.

Music Therapy Sessions: Throughout the months, our regular music therapy sessions have been a highlight. These sessions have not only provided entertainment but have also offered therapeutic benefits, helping to improve mood, cognitive function, and overall well-being. Our seniors have enjoyed singing, dancing, and playing instruments together. The sessions have become a beloved routine, fostering a sense of accomplishment and joy as participants discover new talents and rekindle old passions.

Intergenerational Activities: We’ve also introduced intergenerational activities, bringing in local school children to interact with our seniors. These visits have been filled with arts and crafts, storytelling, and games, creating bonds across generations. The laughter and energy from these sessions have been infectious, with both the children and seniors looking forward to each visit.

Wellness Programs: In addition to our special events, we’ve launched new wellness programs, including chair yoga classes tailored for seniors. These programs have been well-received, offering gentle physical activity that promotes balance, flexibility, and mental clarity. Participants have reported feeling more energized and less stressed, making these programs a staple in our bi-weekly schedule.

Art and Creativity Sessions: Our art and creativity sessions have allowed seniors to explore their artistic talents and express themselves through various mediums. From painting and drawing to crafting and sculpture, these sessions have been therapeutic and have helped to boost self-esteem and cognitive function. The artworks created have been displayed around the center, adding a personal touch and creating a sense of pride and accomplishment among participants.

Celebrating a Milestone: Among the many special moments at our center, we are especially proud to highlight that we have a remarkable client who recently celebrated her 105th birthday. This incredible milestone was marked with a joyous celebration, bringing together our entire community to honor her life and experiences. It was a heartwarming event that underscored the richness and depth of the lives of our seniors.

These events and activities have not only brought immense joy to our seniors but have also strengthened the sense of community within our center. We look forward to continuing this journey of creating memorable experiences and celebrating the lives of our cherished seniors. With more exciting events on the horizon, including a Fourth of July celebration and a fall festival, we are committed to enriching the lives of our participants every day.

BUSINESS

Greetings from your Chamber President, Patty Archer!

We are always proud to witness the vibrant growth and prosperity of our Miramar business community. Our bustling streets, thriving entrepreneurs, and dynamic workforce are a testament to our community’s collective efforts in driving sustainable economic development.

In our journey towards progress, it’s crucial to recognize the pivotal role of business policies that sustain our momentum. These policies serve as the cornerstone of our community’s growth, ensuring a sustainable insurance market, prioritizing workforce education, facilitating affordable and attainable workforce housing, and promoting responsible and sustainable growth.

At the heart of advocating for these policies lies our organization. We are not solely about networking; we are the voice of our local businesses and the champions of an environment where businesses can thrive, jobs can flourish, and opportunities can abound.

Supporting good business policies isn’t just about bolstering the bottom line; it’s about investing in the future of our community. A sustainable insurance market ensures that businesses can weather unforeseen challenges without compromising their operations. Workforce education equips our residents with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in an ever-evolving economy. Sustainable housing initiatives provide stability for our employees and small business employers, which fosters a sense of belonging and commitment to our community. And responsible growth safeguards our environment and preserves the beauty and charm of our surroundings for generations to come.

Now and in the future, the Chamber is dedicated to being a Convener of Leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community. For more information and our event calendar, visit miramarpembrokepines.org.

MIRAMAR NEWS

Programs Available to Miramar Residents

Miramar Canal Embankment Program – residents can apply for free stabilization/repair of their eroded canal or embankments. The program offers a one-time free service for all residents whose property abuts a waterway, canal, or lake. The City’s approach to stabilizing the embankment is using the Geotube system. This is a sediment filled high strength geotextile fabric. Using a pump, the geotube is filled with sand material dredged from the waterbody or imported if there is inadequate material available in the waterbody. Once it reaches capacity, the geo-tube provides a durable ballast, which stabilizes the shoreline. Once the system is installed, the slope is sodded, restoring it to its desired habitat. Once vegetation has been re-established, the eroded slope returns to its natural aesthetic resilience. Residents can apply for the canal/lake embankment restoration program by visiting the City’s website at www.miramarfl.gov/embankmentrestorationprogram or by calling 954-602-HELP (4357)
