Quartet for the End of Time
Michael Collins clarinet/director Alexandra Wood violin Susan Dorey cello Catherine Edwards piano Messiaen composed his Quartet during his internment in the Stalag 8A German prisoner of war camp, during the Second World War, taking the title and inspiration from the Book of Revelation. This is a chance to hear one of the 20th century’s classical masterpieces, directed by our Principal Conductor, Michael Collins, who first performed the piece with Messaien himself. Supernatural Songs, Tavener’s ethereal tour de force inspired by the poems of W.B. Yeats, forms the centrepiece of this special concert, which also features The Hilliard Ensemble, as part of its 40th birthday season. They perform Arvo Pärt’s Litany, with the Holst Singers, and give the UK premiere of Voice of St Columba, by Gavin Bryars, with the Orchestra and leader, Alexandra Wood, performing Pärt’s meditative Frates.
