Slater stepping down from City Council after 18 years APPLICANTS SOUGHT FOR WARD 3 COUNCIL SEAT After serving Lenexa for more than 18 years, Ward 3 Council Member Amy Slater has stepped down from her position.

Amy Slater, a lifelong resident of Lenexa, was elected to her position in 1999 and has been re-elected in all subsequent elections.

Slater has served on the City Council through record development and population growth and saw the creation of Lenexa City Center from vision to reality.

This change creates a vacancy on the Lenexa City Council. Ward 3 residents interested in filling the vacancy may serve the remainder of Slater's term, which ends in January 2020.

PREVENTING FLOODS IN LENEXA

Recent flood events in both the metro area and hurricane-ravaged southern states have brought back many memories for Lenexa residents from not-too-distant times when neighborhoods would suffer flooding from volatile nearby creeks. The City of Lenexa has invested in remediating these flood-prone areas, and we're being proactive in creating infrastructure that prevents future flooding in developing areas. Check out a few examples below.

Little Mill Creek used to plague the Brentwood Park neighborhood with dangerous flash flooding. An $8 million project completed in 2008 successfully stabilized the stream, enlarged culverts and worked with the natural flow of the water to prevent future floods.

Lake Lenexa is much more than a beautiful place to spend a summer afternoon. The 35-acre lake, dam and spillway control flooding around Coon Creek by temporarily holding rain back and releasing it slowly after a storm.

A simple way to prevent buildings from becoming flooded is to keep them from being built in areas that are subject to flooding. A stream setback ordinance passed in the early 2000s keeps homes and businesses from being built too close to streams, preventing future losses.

New amenities are being built to handle runoff from future expansion.

Central Green (pictured) is designed to collect and filter runoff from the many hard surfaces of Lenexa City Center. To the west, the Clear Creek Wetlands provide flood control for growing area development.

We were recently awarded a grant through the Mid-America Regional Council's Planning Sustainable Places Program to study the Quivira Road corridor from 79th to 99th Streets.

Through this study, we hope to create a vision for the continued redevelopment of this highprofile corridor. Safety issues and improving opportunities related to pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles will be looked at to improve livability along the corridor.

Residents in each of the city's wards will have the opportunity to vote for local Lenexa officials in the Nov. 7 election. Four positions on the Lenexa City Council are up for election this year.

The last day to register to vote in this election is Oct. 17.

Call for artists: HeART of Lenexa contest To participate, create a work of art in any medium, inspired by something you love above Lenexa. Submit your art electronically and tell us about your inspiration. Prizes will be awarded in three categories (5–12, 13–18 and adult).

AUTUMN HOUSEHOLD TIPS

Limb & leaf cleanup Are you prepared to properly dispose of autumn's deluge of fallen leaves and sticks?

CURBSIDE PICKUP All yard waste haulers in Lenexa must provide yard waste collection as part of the basic service charge LIMB PICKUP/YARD WASTE for residential customers.

• Yard waste is collected weekly March through November and limited to six bags or bundles per pickup, except during October and November, when the limit is 10 bags or bundles per pickup.

Yard waste is collected monthly December through February.

• Yard waste must be disposed of separately from trash in a

compostable container, such as a brown paper yard waste bag.

• Tree limbs and brush must be secured in a bundle not longer than 48 inches, 18 inches in diameter and weighing no more than 65 pounds each or loose in a ridged container no larger than 35 gallons.

CITY SERVICES Twice a year, in spring and fall, the City of Lenexa accepts yard waste, including large limbs, at Dumpster Days (see below for details).

When severe weather causes

sporadic damage throughout neighborhoods, the City will open a storm debris drop-off site for residents for a time and period determined after the storm.

In extreme and extraordinary storm situations such as ice storms, microbursts or tornadoes, we will schedule and perform curbside pickup for affected areas. Residents will be expected to haul storm debris to the curb or right of way for City crews to pick up. City employees will not go onto private property to remove debris.

FALL DUMPSTER DAYS: OCTOBER 7–8 Lenexa residents are entitled to one free annual bulky item pickup (as required by Lenexa code), which they can schedule calling their waste hauler.

Residents can also dispose of excess yard waste and large items during Dumpster Days at the Lenexa Municipal Services Service Center, 7700 Cottonwood St., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 7–8.

Acceptable items include: appliances, ballasts, electronics,

furniture, lamps, light fixtures, smoke detectors, tires and yard waste.

Chemicals, commercial or industrial waste, fluorescent tubes, fuel tanks, household trash, liquids, propane bottles and other hazardous waste will not be accepted.

SIX TIPS FOR FALL SAFETY Keep your home free of seasonal hazards that can cause fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Cool, dry weather brings a range of fire hazards, from heater malfunctions to the kindling of crisp, dead leaves. Here are six great tips from the Lenexa Fire Department to stay safe this fall.

1 Before lighting your fireplace for

the first time of the season, be sure to have your chimney inspected by a professional. Lenexa Fire staff respond to multiple fires each year caused by improperly maintained fireplaces. Bird nests stuck in the flue are a common culprit.

2 Portable heaters are another frequent cause of fires in the area. Always keep your heater maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions. Keep it away from combustibles, and keep it

clean. Fire staff recommend treating a heater like a candle – don't leave it unattended while it's producing heat.

3 While furnaces burning natural

gas are a common source of carbon monoxide poisoning, any gas-burning appliance including stoves, water heaters and fireplaces can produce these dangerous fumes.

Always make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector on every story of your home that is tested monthly.

4 You should also take note of anything unusual about the flame of gas-burning appliances. A natural gas flame should be almost completely blue with a fleck of yellow near the base. Propane flames should be blue with a yellow tip. A

mostly yellow flame or a strange sound indicate a problem.

5 Always call the Fire Department

to get a permit before burning leaves, lighting a bonfire or igniting other open flames outdoors. Fire Department staff will evaluate weather conditions and the site before issuing you a permit. If weather, wind or ozone conditions are unfavorable that day, a permit will not be issued.

6 Never start your vehicle in a

garage to warm it up, even with the garage doors open. Opening the door between your home and the garage will pull harmful fumes into your home. Also make sure that the exhaust pipe is clear of snow or debris.

QUICKTIPS: Temporary storage containers As the weather cools, residents often find it’s a great time to tackle a big remodeling project or move to a new home. Temporary portable storage containers are a convenient way to safely store property during these projects.

Before you rent one of these units, please take note of a few regulations: • You can have a temporary storage container on your property for up to 30 days in the calendar year.

• You must place the storage container on a paved surface.

The container may not obstruct any city right of way or sidewalks.

• The maximum allowable size for portable storage containers is 160 square feet with an overall length not to exceed 20 feet or height of 8 feet.

FREE FALL ACTIVITIES: From pumpkin painting to cornbread contests to arts & crafts projects, families will find lots of free fun for kids at our Chili Challenge and Enchanted Forest events. Looking for even more engaging children's activities? There's plenty of arts, crafts, STEM and enrichment programs for kids in this issue's Recreation Program Guide!

All participants need to sign a release from liability form before registering and participating in any Lenexa Parks & Recreation program.

Children need to have the form signed by a parent or legal guardian prior to attending a class.

All program cancellations will be determined 48 hours (two business days) before the class is scheduled to begin. In order to prevent cancellations, all registrations are required before the 48-hour deadline.

You will be notified if a program is cancelled or changed. Upon request, a confirmation receipt can be mailed for any program.

If you need to cancel, call at least five business days before the program begins.

Refunds will only be made if cancellation does not affect the minimum number required. There will be a $5 processing fee. Refunds generally take three to six weeks.

Some senior trips and programs require advance notice and have their own cancellation policies.

Refunds are not granted after the activity starts.

The City of Lenexa is committed to making reasonable accommodations for disabled persons, as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Requests for accommodations must be made at least 10 business days prior to the program or activity.

Drop-in activities at the Rec Center are now included in your Rec Center membership. A fee is charged for the general public, but no day pass fee is assessed in addition to this charge. These activities include: • Pickleball: Open play is available in the Activity Gym on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1–3:30 p.m. Regular rate is $2. Members can also play pickleball any time they'd like in the second-floor gymnasium! Just ask an attendant for help if the courts aren't prepared.

• Gym for Me: The Activity Gym is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9–11 a.m. for children ages 5 and under to play with push toys, riding toys, ball, inflatables and more. Regular rate is $2.

• Splash with Me: Kids ages 5 and younger can swim, play and become more confident in the water in the Kiddie Pool. Regular rate is $2. For current dates and times, check the pool schedule at Lenexa.com/RecCenter.

AQUA

BARBELL STRENGTH: Plate-loaded barbells enhance muscular endurance and strength using basic weightlifting techniques.

AQUA TONING: Resistance exercises performed in the shallow areas of the pool enhance overall muscular strength and endurance.

BOOT CAMP: Challenges cardiovascular, pulmonary and musculoskeletal systems using a variety of fitness equipment and body weight exercises.

AQUA ZUMBA®: Low-impact, high-energy cardio dance class in the shallow areas of the pool.

BOSU® BALANCE TRAINING: Uses an inflated dome on a flat base to enhance overall fitness and everyday ease of movement.

WINE 101 (AGES 21+)

Learn the basics about wine, including history, the 5 "S's" of wine tasting and what to look for when ordering wines while dining out. Samples of white, red, dessert and sparkling wines will be provided along with crackers and cheese to cleanse the palate. Register by Oct. 9.
