LENEXA OLD TOWN ACTIVITY CENTER OPENS AS
A V I B R A N T C O M M U N I T Y H U B
After months of anticipation, the Lenexa Old Town Activity Center is officially open and ready for the community. The City marked the occasion with a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 10. Located in the heart of Old Town Lenexa at the corner of Santa Fe Trail Drive and Pflumm Road, this enhanced facility will serve residents of all ages with expanded recreation, enrichment and social opportunities.
“This is a fresh chapter for Old Town,” said Logan Wagler, Lenexa Parks & Recreation Director. “With its mix of indoor and outdoor amenities, this center will be a cornerstone for connection and community. Whether you’re a senior exploring new interests, a parent enrolling your child in a camp, or a resident looking for a place to gather and play, this new space will provide something for everyone.”

SNAP A PHOTO! A vibrant 900-square-foot mural by artist Evan Brown (also known as Doodle Dood) now wraps the southwest corner of the facility, celebrating Lenexa’s past, present and future. This colorful public art piece was made possible in part by a $9,500 grant from the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. Don’t miss the chance to take a photo in front of this bold new landmark!

AMENITIES FOR ALL AGES
The Old Town Activity Center is the new home base for the City’s growing 50-plus programming. After the former Senior Center was razed in late 2024, programs were relocated to a new addition at the Activity Center called the Haskins Wing. This dedicated space offers more room for classes, workshops, social gatherings and wellness offerings tailored to active older adults.
While the Haskins Wing focuses on serving the 50-plus community, the rest of the facility is designed with all ages in mind. The west side of the building was completely renovated and updated and will now host summer camps, early childhood programs and school-age youth activities.
“Families will find an array of enrichment opportunities that grow with their children, from preschool readiness to afterschool fun,” said Wagler.

OUTDOOR RECREATION FOR EVERYONE
Outside, visitors can enjoy a variety of amenities that are open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., just like Lenexa’s other outdoor spaces. These include four new pickleball courts, an open turf area for free play or fitness and outdoor shuffleboard courts. The campus is also home to Scouting Park, just south of the facility, which has community gardens and a newer playground with a Boogie Board, tight rope walker and seated zipline.
EXPANDED HOURS THIS FALL
Starting this fall, expanded hours will make it easier for residents to take advantage of everything the facility offers — from early morning indoor walking to evening social programs.
Drop-in activities
Bingo, card games, yoga, basketball, dance, Johnson County Nutrition meals, preschool programs, e-sports, open gym play and more! Download the Lenexa Parks & Recreation app (see page 18 for details) to check current drop-in activities.

PERFECT FOR PARTIES , RENTALS & EVENTS
With flexible indoor spaces and modern amenities, the Old Town Activity Center is ideal for hosting events of all kinds. Individuals and businesses can now reserve space for birthday parties, family gatherings, meetings, workshops and other celebrations.
“The City encourages the community to think of the center as a go-to venue for events,” said Wagler.

Stay safe this summer

WATER SAFETY TIPS FOR ALL AGES
Summer in Lenexa means plenty of opportunities to cool off — whether it’s at the neighborhood pool, local lakes or backyard splash pads. While water activities are a great way to beat the heat, they also come with real risks. A few simple precautions can go a long way in keeping everyone safe.
Supervision is key. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly. Whether at a pool, lake or even a small kiddie pool, active adult supervision is the number one way to prevent waterrelated tragedies. Don’t rely on lifeguards or flotation devices alone — stay within arm’s reach of young swimmers, and keep your attention focused on the water.
Teach water safety early. Swimming lessons are one of the best investments you can make for your child’s safety.
Kids (and adults) should learn basic swimming skills and understand water rules — like not running near the pool, avoiding drains, and never swimming alone. See pages 25 and 28 for a list of upcoming group, private and semiprivate swim lessons offered by Lenexa Parks & Recreation.
Use life jackets when needed. Life jackets are essential for boating and recommended for young or inexperienced swimmers around open water. Choose U.S. Coast Guardapproved life jackets, and ensure they fit properly.
Be aware of natural water hazards. Local lakes and ponds can have sudden drop-offs, strong currents or hidden debris. Always check the area before swimming, and never dive into unfamiliar water. If boating, follow all
safety regulations, and keep an eye on weather conditions.
Establish pool rules. If you have a backyard pool, set clear rules — no diving, no swimming alone and always close gates or covers when not in use. Install a fence with a selflatching gate for added protection, and follow the City’s building codes for pools — available at Lenexa.com/ Your-Residence/Home-Improvement.
Learn CPR. In a water emergency, knowing CPR can save a life. Consider taking a class or refreshing your skills this summer — it’s a powerful tool that could make all the difference.
Water safety is everyone’s responsibility. With a little preparation and awareness, we can all enjoy a fun, refreshing and safe summer by the water.
APPLY NOW FOR THE CITIZENS’ POLICE ACADEMY
Come learn about the inner workings of the Lenexa Police Department! This popular 12-week program starts every January and September. Applications are currently being accepted for the next class, which begins Sept. 3 and runs weekly until Nov. 19. Classes are held Wednesday evenings from 6–9:30 p.m. at the Lenexa Justice Center.
Topics covered include patrol procedures, criminal investigations, use of force, police K-9, drones, tactical operations and more. To learn more or apply, visit Lenexa.com/CPA.

HEAT SAFETY
Can you guess the top weather-related cause of death in the U.S.? It’s not tornadoes. It’s not flooding. It’s heat.
As the hottest days of summer approach, make sure you know how to properly prepare yourself for outdoor activities and can identify the signs of heat-related illnesses.
Plan ahead. Keep up with the weather forecast. The National Weather Service will issue a Heat Advisory or Extreme Heat Warning during dangerously hot weather.
If these warnings are in effect, plan to stay indoors and out of the sun, if possible. Air-conditioned facilities are the best place to stay. If you don’t live in an air-conditioned building, many facilities are designated cooling centers. All 14 Johnson County libraries — including Lenexa City Center Library — are available cooling centers.
If you need to use an electric fan to cool down a room, don’t point it at you if the room temperature is hotter than 90 degrees. The dry air blown by the fan will dehydrate you.
If you need to be outdoors, make a plan to take frequent breaks in a shady spot.
Stay hydrated. Even if you’re lounging around or you’re not thirsty, you’ll need to drink more water than usual in extreme heat. Carry a water bottle with you. If you’re doing heavy exercise or hard work, drink 16–32 ounces of cool water an hour. That’s two to four glasses. Avoid drinks with alcohol, sugar or caffeine, which can dehydrate you.
Tip: To see if you’re drinking enough water, check your urine color. If it’s light yellow or clear, that’s a sign you are well-hydrated.
Dress for the weather. Wear loose, light-colored clothing, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Light or brightly colored clothes reflect sunlight, while dark clothing absorbs heat. Loose clothes allow air to circulate next to your body.
KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEAT ILLNESS
Taking precautions can prevent heat exhaustion, a heat-related illness you can develop from extreme heat exposure and dehydration. It can cause:
• High body temperature
• Headaches
• Dizziness
• Muscle cramps
• Weakness and fatigue
• Nausea and vomiting
• Increased heart rate
If someone is showing signs of heat exhaustion, try to cool them.
• Move them to a shaded, cool area. Circulate air.
• Remove unnecessary clothing, including socks and shoes.
• Get them to a cold water or ice bath; wet the skin by placing cold, wet cloths on the head, neck, armpits and groin; or soak their clothing.
• Take sips of cool water.
If left untreated, heat exhaustion can turn into heat stroke — which can cause permanent disability or death. Signs of a heat stroke include:
• Extremely high body temperature (above 103 degrees)
• No sweating
• Red, hot, dry skin
• Rapid, strong pulse
• Throbbing headache
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Confusion
• Slurred speech
• Seizures
• Unconsciousness
If you see someone experiencing symptoms of heat stroke, call 911 and try to help them get cool.

After hosting more than 50 pop-up events at the Lenexa Public Market over the past year, KC Döner has officially opened a merchant stall.
Owner Sami Jenedi works alongside his mother, Chef Nesrin Jenedi (pictured above), to bring Mediterranean cuisine with a strong Turkish identity to the Public Market.
“I’ve always dreamed of opening a small restaurant where I could share our food and culture with others,” Sami said. “Being able to bring that dream to life, especially alongside my mom, makes me proud. We’re not just serving meals; we’re sharing a piece of who we are. Seeing people connect with our food and enjoy something new is the most rewarding part.”
KC Döner’s menu is flavorful, fresh and rooted in tradition.
“Our recipes come straight from home, specifically Antioch (Antakya) in southern Turkey,” Sami said. “This region is known for its unique culinary identity, blending Turkish, Arabic and Mediterranean influences. Everything we make is based on traditional recipes passed down in our family. This food is personal; it reflects both our roots and our journey. My mom leads the cooking, bringing the traditional flavors of Antioch to life, while I bring in my experience from when I worked as a cook at Hilton Barcelona. Every dish is made with care, and we want people to feel at home through the food we serve.”
They also offer some vegan and vegetarian options, like hummus, red lentil balls and tabouli salad.
“Their authentic flavors and fresh take on traditional recipes are something truly special,” said Public Market Manager Tessa Adcock. “We’re confident that our guests will appreciate and enjoy what KC Döner has to offer.”
KC Döner is open Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m.–8 p.m. View their full menu at LenexaPublicMarket.com

A bandage may seem small—but to a child battling cancer, it can mean everything.
When 6-year-old Noah Wilson was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, he quickly grew tired of the plain brown bandages that marked his daily treatments. He wanted something cheerful — something that made him smile. So, he turned that wish into a mission.

Noah started Noah’s Bandage Project, an organization that collects colorful bandages for kids and raises money and awareness for childhood cancer.
To Noah, a bandage was more than a medical item — it was a badge of courage, a form of selfexpression, and a little piece of joy during tough days.
Although Noah passed away in 2015, his legacy continues to brighten the lives of children undergoing medical treatments.
This July, you can help make a difference by donating boxes of cool, fun bandages at any of the following locations:
• Flat Rock Creek Pool
• Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center
• Lenexa City Hall
• Lenexa Rec Center
• Lenexa Justice Center

• Lenexa Old Town Activity Center
• Municipal Services Service Center
Donations will be accepted from July 1–31.
You can also contribute online — just $2 covers the cost of one box of bandages, and all funds support pediatric cancer research.

This campaign is led by the City of Lenexa’s We Care Committee, a team of employees from every City department who organize events throughout the year to support local nonprofit organizations.

Still need to get your splash on? There’s time — and it’s a deal! Midseason pool memberships are 50% off starting July 7, so you can soak up the rest of summer for less.
But here’s the real splash-worthy news: Ad Astra Pool is getting a full makeover, and it’s set to open in summer 2026! Construction begins soon on a fresh, modern pool experience designed for fun, fitness and community. Check out the designs at Lenexa.com/PoolProject.
