The new heart of Lenexa is here The hub of Lenexa's civic, cultural, culinary and recreational activities is ready for the community to enjoy.

After nearly two years of construction, the Lenexa City Hall and Rec Center opened July 31. The Public Market's official opening will be Sept. 1.

Browse pieces in the new City Hall Art Gallery. Pick up a scrumptious dessert at the Public Market. Splash aroung in the Rec Center's indoor pool.

On the following pages, we'll highlight some of the most stunning spaces in the new facilities.

COMING TO THE LENEXA CIVIC CAMPUS: SMSD AQUATIC CENTER AND CITY CENTER LIBRARY Two of our community partners will soon start work on a pair of visually engaging and active new public facilities at the civic campus.

The Johnson County Library plans to break ground on a two-story, 40,000-square-foot library on the southeast corner of the civic campus later this year.

Just north of the Lenexa Rec Center, the Shawnee Mission School District plans to open an aquatic center in late 2018 or early 2019.

The City Center Library will be built across the Lower Commons from the Lenexa Public Market. Patrons will be able to pick up and drop off books from a drive-up kiosk in the adjacent civic campus parking garage.

The Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center will hold up to 1,500 spectators for regional and national swim meets in a 50-meter competition swimming pool. The site will also have a public parking garage.

WELCOME TO THE MARKET The Lenexa Public Market is the metro area's newest culinary destination. Located on the lower level of Lenexa City Hall, this vibrant space will feature a food hall and market selling locally sourced, handmade products and fresh food when it opens Sept. 1.

LOCALLY MADE The Market features many handcrafted elements, like these rustic drink rails created by a local artisan. Other tables are carved from Lenexasourced walnut and oak wood.

THE KITCHEN Overlooking the Market from a mezzanine is The Kitchen, a demonstration kitchen that will host cooking classes, culinary events and public and private celebrations.

VARIETY + QUALITY The 11,000-square-foot market will be a dynamic space. Anchor restaurants and a handful of merchant stalls will entice customers to return for more of a favorite meal or product, while day cart vendors and pop-up merchants will add ever-changing variety to the market's collection of goods.

QUICK BITES – NEWS IN BRIEF ADAPTED POOL SEASON HOURS Ad Astra and Flat Rock Creek pools will close for the season at 6 p.m. Aug. 6. Indian Trails Aquatic Center will have an adapted schedule from Aug. 6 through Sept. 4. It will be open weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m. and weekends from noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 4 will be the last day of the season at Indian Trails, with hours from noon to 6 p.m.

CALL FOR ARTISTS: HEART OF LENEXA CONTEST It’s time to start preparing artwork for the annual HeART of Lenexa Contest. To participate, create a work of art in any medium, inspired by something you love about Lenexa. Submit your art electronically and tell us about your inspiration.

Prizes will be awarded in three age categories (5–12, 13–18 and adult).

Lenexa residents are invited to apply to participate in the next Citizens’ Police Academy, a free 11-week course that gives attendees an inside look a the LPD. The next session meets at 6:30–9 p.m. on Wednesdays from Sept. 6 through Nov. 15.

Attendees will learn about topics including patrol procedures,

criminal law, officer safety, traffic enforcement, firearms, crime scene processing, crime prevention and K-9, tactical and investigations units.

Tours will also be given of the Johnson County Crime Lab and Adult Detention Center in Olathe.

Enjoy lunch and a solar eclipse at the Lenexa Commons Spend your midday break on Aug. 21 enjoying a great lunch, learning about astronomy and taking in a historic solar eclipse.

The City of Lenexa is hosting a solar eclipse watch party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the civic campus. Pick up a delicious lunch from a local food truck, then head out to the Commons to watch the main event.

This is the first time in 38 years that the moon will completely cover the sun in the United States. Lenexa lies just outside the path of the total eclipse – at the event’s peak

at about 1:08 p.m., the sun will be 99.6 percent covered by the moon!

Free solar glasses will be available for the first 200 people to join us for lunch. There will also be solar system demonstrations and educational activities.

While you wait for the eclipse to begin, create a solar eclipse zentangle (material provided). Your completed artwork can be uploaded to the NASA website to be featured in a national quilt project.

The new pavilion at SarKo-Par Trails Park will seat up to 200 people and offer great views of Rose’s Pond.

Clear Creek wetland blends trails, flood control and water treatment Take a stroll down the 6,000 feet of new trails intertwined among the recently completed Clear Creek Regional Wetland southeast of Clare Road and 86th Terrace. While you admire the many species of birds, animals and native vegetation that now call this place home, the wetlands are quietly providing flood control, water quality treatment and recreational amenities for all residents.

The wetland joins regional projects like Mize Lake, Lake Lenexa and the City Center Streamway as another success of Lenexa’s Rain to Recreation Program. The water quality and flood-control projects designed and implemented by this program protect the natural and developed environment while providing public education, involvement and recreational opportunities.

The Clear Creek wetland is composed of two large wetland areas on 130 acres of City property. The area is sized to accommodate the rapid growth that western Lenexa is experiencing and decrease the likelihood of future flooding.

Dams on Clear Creek and an adjacent tributary cause water to pond in the wetland during rainfall events.

Much of the water is then retained after the rain, where it is naturally cleansed by the native vegetation.

New pavilion, site enhancements coming to Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park Sweeping improvements are now under way at the heart of popular Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park.

This project, which began in late May, manifested through a Park Master Plan as the top priority for the park for residents and patrons. The central area of the Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park, the site of the original owner’s home, is the only area of the 51-acre park not open to the public.

By March 1, 2018, this site will be home to striking new facilities and other new and enhanced amenities.

The centerpiece of the project is a new pavilion, which will seat up to 200 people and will be the largest open-air outdoor structure in Lenexa’s parks system.

The pavilion will be perched atop the highest point of the park, offering fantastic views of the surrounding landscape and Rose’s Pond from an overlook deck. With plenty of space and beautiful surroundings, the new pavilion will be a great location for hosting large gatherings.

Other planned improvements include the replacement of the central restroom and Lion’s Shelter, new parking and trails, the replacement of a reinforced box culvert near the skate park and other site improvements.

Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park has a unique history and has been developed over many years to suit the needs of the community over time. An old well on the project site will be protected through construction to offer visitors a look at the park property’s history.

Children need to have the form signed by a parent or legal guardian prior to attending a class.

All program cancellations will be determined 48 hours (two business days) before the class is scheduled to begin. In order to prevent cancellations, all registrations are required before the 48-hour deadline.

You will be notified if a program is cancelled or changed. Upon request, a confirmation receipt can be mailed for any program.

If you need to cancel, call at least five business days before the program begins.

To keep up to date on event, program and facility closures, cancellations and notifications, sign up for Rainout Line, our notification service.

Refunds will only be made if cancellation does not affect the minimum number required. There will be a $5 processing fee. Refunds generally take three to six weeks.

Adult and Active ARTS/CRAFTS FUNDAMENTALS OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Bring your digital or film camera and capture the fundamental principles of photography. Taught by Chris Stillwell, this course will cover technical topics such as camera and lens settings; artistic principles, such as how to compose a scene and light a subject; and practical subjects, such as taking family portraits and shooting pictures of wildlife.

STARFISH STROKE SCHOOL™
