JULY Is

Parks & Recreation MONTH!

40 years

his July, the City of Laredo joins the nation in celebrating 40 years of Parks and Recreation Month, honoring the vital role that parks, trails, recreation centers, and open spaces play in our community’s health, happiness, and connection. Launched in 1985 by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), Parks and Recreation Month shines a spotlight on the professionals, volunteers, and programs that help shape thriving, inclusive, and sustainable communities. This year’s theme — Build Together, Play Together — highlights how our shared green spaces are more than places to relax and play; they’re where memories are made, friendships are formed, and wellness is nurtured.

In Laredo, our parks are at the heart of summertime joy. Whether you're taking a morning walk through the shaded trails at El Progreso Park, diving into summer fun at one of our many splash parks and pools, or enjoying a family picnic at North Central Park, there are endless ways to connect, recharge, and make the most of the season.

Throughout the month of July, the Laredo Parks & Recreation Department will be sharing fun and engaging activities on social media to celebrate the occasion. From fitness classes and community events to creative challenges and behind-the-scenes glimpses of our hardworking parks team, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and get involved in.

When you visit your favorite local park, trail, pool, or splash park this month, snap a photo and tag us with our official hashtags: #WhereYouBelong #ParkAndRecMonth2025 #LaredoParksandRec

ummer in Laredo can be pretty hot, and that is why it’s always a great idea to cool off with your little ones at any of our Splash Parks. A splash park is an aquatic facility for children, where safety is the number one priority as water will always be shallow. It is a place with equipment for young children to play outdoors in water and is fitted with a non-slip or safety surface with various nozzles and features that can shower, spray, rain, mist, and/or shoot streams of water.

The City of Laredo is home to 10 Splash Park locations and you can take advantage when they open on June 4, Tuesdays through Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

UMMER SAFETY

TIPSFROM SPARKY!

Hi kids! It’s me, Sparky the Fire Dog, here with some paws-itively important safety tips to help you have the best summer ever! Whether you’re grilling with family, splashing in the pool, or hanging out in the park, safety means more fun! From your friends at the Laredo Fire Department, have a cool, happy, and fire-safe summer and remember, Sparky’s always cheering for you!

It’s important to memorize your home address and how to call Summer is all about fun, but staying safe is just as important. Fire

Remind kids to never touch matches, lighters, or fireworks. Know what to do if your clothes catch fire: Stop what you ’ re doing. Stop, Drop, and Roll—it saves lives!

Be safe near water. When you ’ re at the pool or near any water, follow the rules, never play rough, and always listen to adults nearby.

TIPS FOR THRIVING YARDS AND GREENER NEIGHBORHOODS

Laredo summers are known for their intense heat, dry conditions, and unpredictable storms— all of which can take a toll on our city's landscapes. As temperatures rise, it becomes even more important for residents to protect and maintain their green spaces. Keep Laredo Beautiful (KLB) is here to help you keep your yards—and our city—safe, healthy, and beautiful throughout the season.

Start with water-wise landscaping. Choose native or drought-resistant plants that thrive in our region with minimal watering. Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation, and consider installing drip irrigation systems to conserve water. Mulching around trees and flower beds can also help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Regular lawn maintenance goes a long way. Keep your grass at a slightly higher length during summer months to provide shade for roots and reduce water needs.

Remove debris and litter from your yard to prevent pests and improve the look and health of your space.

KLB encourages all residents to participate in our cleanups and beautification events. These community efforts help reduce litter, promote environmental awareness, and keep our public areas looking their best. Be sure to follow us on Facebook (@KeepLaredoBeautiful) or Instagram (@beautifullaredo) for upcoming event details, volunteer opportunities, and green living tips.

By taking small steps at home and engaging with citywide efforts, we can all play a role in protecting Laredo’s natural beauty—even during the hottest months. Let’s work together to Keep Laredo Beautiful this summer!
