YWCA’S HEALDSBURG CHILDCARE CENTER

On September 19, 2024, the Healdsburg City Council and YWCA Sonoma County, conducted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new YWCA Healdsburg Childcare Center. This exciting new facility is a testament to the City Council's commitment to expanding early childhood education in the community.

In 2021, the City Council adopted a goal to: “Explore options for expanding child-care services focusing on delivery mechanisms, and funding options.” After a thorough review process, the YWCA was selected as the ideal partner to establish a licensed, full-day preschool program at the Community Center.

As part of the implementation of the program, the City agreed to make improvements to the existing classrooms to meet state licensing requirements, creating a safe and nurturing learning environment.

The YWCA Healdsburg Childcare Center offers families in the area access to affordable, highquality childcare. We are thrilled to welcome the YWCA to our community and look forward to the positive impact this new center will have on local families.

NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH

When disaster strikes, having a well-prepared emergency kit can make all the difference. This National Preparedness Month, we are reminding you to build your emergency kit.

Don't forget to include:

Non- perishable food, water that can last several days

Flashlights, radios, extra batteries

First aid kit

An emergency kit should have everything you need to survive for several days. Include supplies that might be needed by pets, older adults, and those with disabilities.

Remember to maintain your kit so it's ready when needed:

Keep canned food in a cool, dry place.

Store boxed food in tightly closed plastic or metal containers.

Replace expired items as needed

Rethink your needs every year and update your kit as your family's needs change.

Since you do not know where you will be when an emergency occurs, prepare supplies for home, work and cars.

SMALL STEPS, BIG IMPACT: ZERO WASTE TIPS FOR YOUNG ADULTS

Beyond the familiar basics of composting and recycling, there are countless ways to minimize your environmental footprint.

Here are a few simple steps you can take:

Embrace Secondhand Shopping: Ditch fast fashion for sustainable style. Apps like Poshmark, Depop, and ThredUp make it easy to find gently used clothing and accessories.

Choose Reusable: Invest in reusable cups, containers, and bags. Single-use items often end up in landfills due to their non-recyclable materials.

Join the Sharing Economy: Check out local Facebook groups or online marketplaces like Craigslist for gently used items. This helps keep goods out of landfills and saves you money.

Start a Tiny Garden: Even in a small apartment, you can grow your own food. Repurpose a plastic container, fill it with soil, add seeds, and watch your garden flourish.

Mindful Consumption: Before making a purchase, ask yourself if you truly need it. By being more intentional, you can reduce waste and save money.

By incorporating these small changes into your daily life, you can significantly reduce your environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future.

CABERNET ROAD CULVERT REPLACEMENT PROJECT

In the winter of 2023, ground subsidence and a sinkhole formed above two aging, 42-inch diameter corrugated metal culverts beneath Chablis Road, historically referred to as Cabernet Road. To prevent further damage, the City is working to replace these structures before the start of the rainy season. The project includes removal and replacement of the two culverts crossing under the roadway, installation of rock slope stabilization at the inlets and outlets to prevent erosion, and restoration of the roadway and adjacent land subsidence.
