Golden’s Neighborhoods

IF YOU’RE HERE to explore Golden’s 6,208 acres—on foot, by bike or from the comfort of your vehicle — there’s a lot to see! We’ve put together a list of six neighborhoods and what you can expect to find as you venture around our city, where modern amenities blend seamlessly with Old West vibes.

Downtown Golden

With its massive welcome arch, Historic Downtown Golden is often the go-to area in the city for first-time visitors. The streets are lined with public art, unique retail boutiques, outdoor-gear shops, health and wellness stores, art galleries and plenty of spots to grab a bite to eat or a locally crafted beer There are also a variety of activities for those who love arts and culture, such as the Foothills Art Center and the Golden History Museum and Park, the latter of which will take you through 1870s homestead cabins. Aiming to get in your steps for the day? Hike along the banks of the water on the Clear Creek trail or explore the city’s oldest park, Parfet Park, with plenty of large shade trees and brass markers noting historical points of interest.

But there’s far more to Golden than the downtown hub of window shopping, historic buildings, people watching and vibrant nightlife. The city boasts diverse neighborhoods that contribute to the unique character of the city Here are some highlights of other areas for you to consider as you explore the area as a tourist—or potential resident.

North Golden

North and northeast of downtown, you’ll find a vibrant mix of residential communities, stunning parks and local businesses within the valley of the surrounding front range mountains. Explore Mount Galbraith Trailhead, White Ranch Park or Tony Grampsas Memorial Sports Complex Trail before refueling at one of the neighborhood taverns, bistros or grills. Then explore some of the North Golden shops, including one of the largest family-owned and operated ski stores in Colorado, before sampling some locally made beer at one of the neighborhood breweries.

South Golden/West Colfax

South Golden/West Colfax areas are home to the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum, which displays traditional, historical and modern quilts and hosts exhibits, classes and events. You’ll also find a popular bakery, sports bar, an award-winning distillery, hotel and even an RV park. Colfax Avenue is famous for being ‘the longest business street in America’ and stretches from Golden across the Mile High City

South Golden Road

Along South Golden Road, you’ll find a mix of locally owned businesses, outdoor beer gardens and off-the-beaten-path vendors, including a curiosity shop, a fun new country outpost with lively events and a summer market, a crystal and rock shop, and even a historic lodge that now hosts live bands. Convenient to Golden’s light rail station and home to Fossil Trace Golf Course, Splash Aquatic Park at Fossil Trace and several popular restaurants, South Golden Road is a local’s favorite just waiting to be discovered!

Gateway Village

Located near Red Rocks Amphitheatre and along I-70, Gateway Village has a hotel, bike and motorcycle shops and a variety of restaurants. It’s considered an ideal pre and “après-” (after) ski destination and is a perfect spot to enjoy handcrafted cocktails, fine wines and locally crafted beers around a cozy fireplace.

Lookout Mountain

For those who love playing outdoors sans snow, this neighborhood just west of downtown is for you! Golden’s tallest park sits atop its tallest peak, Lookout Mountain. Whether you hike, bike or drive the 7,300 feet, the breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains, Denver skyline and sweeping landscapes between will be worth the wait. In fact, the mountain is famous for road cycling and has been featured in several of the US Pro Challenge races.

The road that ascends from Golden up the steep side of the mountain (technically called Mount Zion) is part of the 40-mile Lariat Loop National Scenic Byway Built in 1913, this 4.6-mile switchback (56 curves!) allows you to retrace the motoring adventures of the early 1920s. Once you reach the top of Lookout Mountain, you’ll be able to explore the final resting place of Wild West legend William F. Cody at the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave, as well as the Lookout Mountain Nature Center, which includes interactive exhibits, an observation room, and a hands-on play room.

Need help exploring? Check out the map on page 24 of this guide.

Making Memories IN GOLDEN

VISITORS OFTEN COME to the area to get a taste of the “Wild West,” when pioneers traveled by horse, lived off the land, and communed over a glass (or two) of whiskey in the local saloon. It’s an experience they’re sure to get in Golden, where our welcome arch proudly proclaims, “Where the West Lives!”

The town itself is brimmi ng with Western-themed shops, showcasi ng everything from cowboy boots, hats and belt buckles to Native American art, antique relics and collectible rocks and gems from the region. But beyond what you can buy in Golden is what you can experience.

The Wild West Walking Tour, hosted by Golden Histor y Tours, for example, explains the town’s histor y and how it ties to the Wild West. There’s also a Wild West Pu b Crawl for adults who want to explore three breweries while sippi ng on local beer.

Golden is also home to the Colorado Railroad Museum, a top-10 Denver attraction featuring dozens of historic locomotives and railroad cars, model trains, exhibits and train rides. Take the entire family to pan for gold in Clear Creek at the Arapahoe Bar Gold Panning Park between Golden and

Wheat Ridge. No motorized equipment is allowed but you can use battery-operated equipment. The area allows dogs and there are public restrooms nearby.

Prefer to make memories from the comfort of your car?

The Lariat Loop offers 40 miles of scenic views with dozens of open space parks, museums and heritage sites, including the Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave, Dinosaur Ridge, and the Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Preserve, among others.

Hiking Trails THE TOAST OF THE TOWN IN GOLDEN

GOLDEN IS SURROUNDED by six moun‑ tains, all of which have hiking trails that lead to spectacular views of snow‑covered peaks and the high plains of Metro Denver. And what could be better after a hike than sitting in an outdoor beer garden, sipping a craft brew and looking up at the peak you just climbed? The map on the opposite page shows just some of the hiking trails around Golden. Here are some popular options and afterwards, toast to your adventure at a Golden brewery!

Clear Creek Trail

Don’t feel like climbing a mountain? No worries! The Clear Creek Trail is nearly flat and follows the beautiful river west up into a scenic canyon of sheer cliffs. The year-round, family-friendly trail is paved or hard gravel and crosses Clear Creek on several bridges. The trail can be accessed from the Welcome Center in downtown Golden or from two massive parking areas with restrooms on Highway 6 just west of Golden.

Lookout Mountain and Mount Zion

The highest and most prominent mountain that towers above Golden is Lookout Mountain. There is a high spur to the north called Mount Zion, which is where the giant white rock ‘M’ for the Colorado School of Mines is built. Each year, new students climb up and place a white rock on the geoglyph, while graduating students hike up and remove one as a treasured souvenir You can follow their path on a series of trails that climb both peaks. Most scenic is the Windy Saddle Trail,

which begins halfway up Lookout Mountain Road and switchbacks through pine forests to Buffalo Bill’s Grave and the Lookout Mountain Preserve and Nature Center Back in town, almost all beer gardens and cafés have a view of the two peaks.

North Table Mountain

Another landmark of Golden is this broad, flat-topped mesa that rises hundreds of feet above Clear Creek Valley to the north and is ringed by cliffs. You can hike to its summit on a hiker-only trail called Lichen Peak, or hike or bike on the 5.9-mile loop trail that goes completely around the mesa.

South Table Mountain and Castle Rock

The iconic view of Golden is the prominent high volcanic rock butte that sits above Coors Brewery named Castle Rock.* It has been featured on their logo for 150 years. The hike is short and steep, but pays wonderful dividends with the best views of downtown Golden. The very first T-Rex dinosaur bones were discovered here. The butte is visible from almost every beer garden and outdoor café in town.

*Castle Rock is private property. Do not trespass.

The City of Golden and Jefferson County offer an extensive and interconnected trail system of 24 miles, providing diversity in both types of trail experience and destinations. Regional Trail connections provide a link to neighboring communities and open space. Information about trail features, difficulty and locations can be found at www.visitgolden.com/outdoors/hiking or by scanning the QR code above.

“Meeting People”

Located just 12 miles from Denver with highway access to Denver International Airport, Golden is easy to reach, and yet offers a completely different mountain experience for small meetings, family reunions, weddings, even girlfriend getaways.

The key to the historic Old West town is that it is pedestrian-oriented and sits in lovely Clear Creek Valley, surrounded in all directions by rocky buttes and mountains. Everything in downtown is easy to reach by a short walk. And what a walk it can be. Pretty Clear Creek flows through the center of Golden and is followed by a paved bike path that stretches nearly three miles up into the mountains to the west and more than 15 miles east all the way to downtown Denver All of downtown Golden’s hotels are on the Clear Creek Trail or just a few blocks away, as are more than

The Eddy Taproom & Hotel Meeting Room

two dozen restaurants, five outdoor beer gardens, two live theatres, a concert music hall and several museums.

The people of Golden love to live outdoors and the historic town has become one of the top centers for outdoor recreation on the Front Range. Opportunities for “team building” activities abound, including bike riding, rock climbing in Clear Creek Canyon, hiking mountain trails, golf on one of Colorado’s most beautiful courses (where you can see dinosaur tracks made by a T-Rex! ), fly fishing, kayaking and rafting.

Meeting and wedding sites in picturesque settings can also be found, from a millionaire’s former mountaintop lodge to the Colorado Railroad Museum where a pavilion is surrounded by narrow-gauge steam locomotives and working trains, to gorgeous creekside settings just a few minutes walk from first-class hotels and fine dining.

Golden is also just a few minutes’ drive from the amazing Red Rocks Amphitheatre, making it the perfect place to combine a wedding or meeting with an unforgettable, bucket list concert night. With more than 700 hotel rooms, ranging from delightful bed & breakfasts to brand new, stateof-the-art hotels, and its ideal location, Golden can offer all the opportunities of a mountain town event, just minutes from a major international airport.
