ORTHOSOUTH

Innovations in Healthcare

OrthoSouth announced the opening of its new OrthoSouth Spine Institute in November, marking the culmination of multiple months’ work.

Dr. Sam Shroerlucke is part of the team at OrthoSouth that spearheaded the project, making the facility the only MidSouth practice to house a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team of spine specialists at a single location.

OrthoSouth’s Spine Institute offers spinal health care in a holistic, personalized approach: from diagnostics and treatment to rehabilitation for all back and spine-related conditions.

“What we’re trying to do is coordinate all the different aspects of back pain and spine problems, whether it’s surgical or non-surgical, in order to manage the patient’s needs under one roof,” Schroerlucke said.

The Spine Institute houses all of the varying specialties a patient might need, according to Schroerlucke. Holistic approaches to medicine and medical procedures are not new, but they are being embraced more and more as providers learn the many benefits to patients.

“We now know there’s more than one way to treat a certain problem,” Schroerlucke said.

Standard Setting the

A look inside Germantown's commitment to excellence

Ever wonder what makes Germantown such a special place to call home? Sure, the parks are beautiful and the neighborhoods are charming, but it's the everyday excellence of our city employees that truly sets the city apart. From a cheerful greeting at City Hall to efficient solutions in public works and acclaimed public safety, residents experience the city's mission of “Excellence, Every Day.”

Much of these high standards stem from the city’s approach to onboarding and empowering

its staff on all levels. Guided by the city’s core values of Producing A+ Results, Delivering Service Excellence and Leading Responsibly, city employees undergo specialized training designed to make every resident feel valued, heard and cared for.

“Our residents deserve the very best, and excellence isn't something we just talk aboutit's woven into the fabric of everything we do at the city,” Mayor Mike Palazzolo says. “Each employee plays an important role in shaping

Germantown's culture of exceptional service, and it shows every time they interact with our community. I'm incredibly proud of how our team lives the promise of 'Excellence, Every Day.'”

Here are some examples of how the city is redefining civic service, one interaction at a time.

LEADERS OF EXCELLENCE & AMBASSADOR DEVELOPMENT (LEAD)

When the extensive six-month LEAD program is in session twice a year, at any given time, you can find city staff out of their element and usually enjoying it: communications professionals are decked out in firefighter turnout gear, court clerks are driving forklifts, accountants are taking aim in the police firing range.

This cross-training program gives staff members a hands-on experience of the city’s array of services and allows them to walk in the shoes of their colleagues with different skill sets. Not only does it educate team members about the city’s fundamental values, it fosters connections among them, allowing for a more meaningful experience and ultimately resulting in better customer service. LEAD members also delve into leadership development topics and take a deep dive into Germantown’s Strategic Plan and its key performance areas.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS TEAM (FIT)

Germantown's First Impressions Team (FIT) is composed of key representatives from various departments whose goal is to ensure that the appearance of the city fits its core values. FIT members regularly tour the city, reporting aesthetic concerns through a custom app to quickly alert appropriate staff.

“This team is made up of 10 employees who represent Engineering, Code Enforcement, Public Works, General Services, Parks and Recreation, Administration and Procurement and Risk. This program focuses on non-hazard-related elements that, while not safety concerns, play a vital role in creating a welcoming and polished environment,” says Jennifer Jenkins, assistant director of Procurement & Risk. “Key areas include landscaping and grounds maintenance, signage, utility poles and utility boxes, just to name a few. By prioritizing curb appeal, the program fosters civic pride among residents and ensures that visitors experience a positive, lasting first impression, reflecting a community that values beauty, care and attention to detail. In doing so, the program directly supports the city’s mission of Excellence, Every Day.

PUBLIC SAFETY

Public safety is another aspect of Germantown that stands out in its excellence - whether it be through skills, training or response time - and that type of service doesn’t happen by accident.

To maintain the highest level of public safety, the Germantown Police Department (GPD) continues to invest in cutting-edge technology and advanced training. These strategic upgrades not only enhance officer performance and safety, but also provide residents with a stronger, more efficient police force.

For example, GPD has introduced a virtual reality training system, ensuring that officers are prepared for real-world challenges, complementing their traditional training methods.

“Utilizing virtual reality simulation allows us to place officers under stress in multiple scenarios to help ensure good decisions are made during critical incidents,” says Police Chief Mike Fisher. “It’s just one of many ways that we continually strive to set the standard for public safety excellence, ensuring that our residents feel secure and protected every day.”

Through innovative training programs like these, Germantown continues to deliver on its promise of “Excellence, Every Day,” enhancing quality of life for every resident who calls our city home. ■

What I’ve Learned Spence Ray

President, McNeill Commercial Real Estate

By the grace of God, I strive to initiate, building and maintain relationships, the IBM of life. I daily remind myself of who I am, a child of God, son of my parents, a husband, dad, grandfather, coworker, brother, friend, neighbor, uncle, developer and an American.

I find meaning and purpose in these relationships and to that end I consider them my deepest accomplishments.

I am a small part of an incredible team working together on some awesome developments.

Some think we are in the real estate industry but we consider ourselves to be in the people business. Our desire is to develop and contribute with excellence in what we build and how we treat people.

Our community is filled with men, women and children who do not have adequate economic, political or academic resources and need someone to fill the gap. I admire those who fill the gap.

Dr. Scott Morris is an example of this. I find consistent qualities in him and others like him who I label as living by the “Boaz” principle. They are outward, upward and other focused.

I love the outdoors, especially the west. Our national parks are one of a kind and as long as it is outside, challenging and somewhat dangerous, I’m all in.

The workplace is a powerful platform for influence, impact and building relationships. The paradoxes of life are powerful and true. Death of self brings real life and it really is better to give than to receive.

Either community will thrive or individuals will, but not both. Franchise players know who they are, so do the rest of the team.

The best advice I received came from my boss and partner for over 40 years, Phillip H. McNeill Sr, when I first went to work for him. He said, ‘Son, if you are ever going to do anything of significance, you have to take risk.’ Phil gave me much responsibility I did not deserve and showed me what it means to take risk with people and in life.

Few things in life that have meaning do not involve risk.

I love the spirit and expectation of excellence of Germantown. From planning and design, leadership, schools, public works, fire and police protection, people care and are in it for the long haul.

My favorite quote: 'Life is an adventure, live it.' The human heart-soul loves a great adventure, especially when experienced with those they love.

Most people live in three days: Yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Yesterday is defined by (past) successes, failures and regrets. Regardless, those days are over and done. We can learn from them and use to navigate today, but good or bad, leave them be.

Tomorrow, which steals life from today because we can write it however we wish, yet we're never accountable because it's always part of the future.

Today is the only place where we really live, breathe, laugh, cry, nurture relationships and face challenges.■

Meet the next generation of leaders and achievers from Houston High School

From athletic accomplishments on national stages to academic excellence and leadership in the classroom, this class of 2025 has distinguished themselves through hard work, discipline and dedication. In the following profiles, we highlight a few seniors whose stories reflect the spirit and strength of the Houston Mustang community.

by Jeff Hulett
Photography by Alex Ginsburg Photographics
“I manage my time by where my feet are. When I’m at school, all of my focus is on school. When I’m on the diamond, all my focus is on baseball.”

Chandler Day

SENIOR, HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL

With a Division I baseball scholarship in hand and a confident presence on the mound, Chandler Day is ready to take his next big step.

The Houston High School senior will graduate this year and continue his academic and athletic career at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

As a left-handed pitcher — or southpaw — Day has long admired the San Francisco Giants. He also draws inspiration from former Houston High standouts who made it to the major leagues, including World Series ace Matt Cain, Ben Johnson and Paul Maholm.

While known for delivering strikes from the mound, Day is just as focused in the classroom. He plans to study business finance and is determined to make the most of every opportunity that comes his way.

In a fast-paced world filled with distractions, Day has learned the value of staying present — whether he's on the field or in a classroom.

“I manage my time by where my feet are,” he said. “When I’m at school, all of my focus is on school. When I’m on the diamond, all my focus is on baseball.”

That grounded approach, Day said, has helped him thrive both academically and athletically. He credits his peers, coaches and teachers for their support and encourages younger students to stay focused and intentional.

“I would tell an underclassman to make the most of every opportunity they get, to invest in themselves, and only try to be as good as they can be and not worry about being as good as others.”

“You never know what you can handle until you try it, so don’t be scared to put yourself out there.”

Jack Boccher

SENIOR, HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL

Earning an appointment to a U.S. military academy is no easy feat—acceptance rates hover in the single digits, and competition is fierce. That makes what Houston High School senior Jack Boccher accomplished all the more remarkable: he was accepted into not one, but three—West Point, the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy.

“I chose the Naval Academy because I’m really motivated to fly and sail around the world,” he said. “It’s always intrigued me ever since I was a boy, and I stuck with my goal.”

A stellar varsity soccer player, Boccher had the grades and talent to go anywhere on scholarship, but attending a service academy is free in exchange for a six-year commitment to serve.

“I can see myself being there for 20 years,” he said. “Pilots tend to serve longer.”

As for rounding out his career on the Houston Mustangs soccer team, Jack says they are in the heart of the season, maintaining an undefeated record at time of writing. He plays goalie and proudly notes he hasn’t conceded a goal this season.

For Boccher, he’s excited about finishing up his senior year in such a fun and communal way. As for what keeps him on track, having a plan is critical.

“Time management is key. It’s just prioritizing what I need to get done,” he said. “I know where I want to be in four years, three years, two years. I use that motivation to my advantage.”

His advice to younger students? Embrace responsibility.

“You never know what you can handle until you try it, so don’t be scared to put yourself out there.”

Eva and Roos Rotnik

SENIORS, HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL

For Eva and Roos Rotink, water isn’t just where they compete — it’s where they thrive. The twin sisters and standout swimmers at Houston High School recently showcased their talent on a national stage: the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials.

“I learned a lot from participating in the trials, and it showed me what it takes to be the best,” Eva said. “It opened up a bunch of other amazing opportunities, gave me recognition and the chance to meet some amazing people. It was unlike anything I’d ever been to, especially since it was in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.”

For Roos, the chance to race against the country’s top swimmers was a powerful motivator — but also a test of balance.

“Maintaining good grades and athletics comes down to time management and discipline,” she said. “I typically try to get all of my homework done during flex time at school and during the weekends if the time allows.”

“Maintaining good grades and athletics comes down to time management and discipline,”
Roos Rotnik

Both sisters have parlayed their dedication into full athletic scholarships. Eva will swim at Indiana University, while Roos is headed to the University of Virginia.

Their commitment — in and out of the pool — is evident.

“I would say that my determination to do well in my classes and in the pool is what drives me to succeed,” Eva said. “I remind myself that time management is super important, since I’m at school for about six hours a day and then at the pool for three, so with the time I have I make sure to get my homework done whenever I get the chance.”

“I would say that my determination to do well in my classes and in the pool is what drives me to succeed,”
Eva Rotnik

Ryan Mitchell

SENIOR, HOUSTON HIGH SCHOOL

“My parents have always taught me that time management is key,” said Ryan Mitchell, a senior at Houston High School and an expert at juggling his baseball career while succeeding in the classroom. “If you can manage your time well, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. That mindset has helped me stay focused and excel in both academics and athletics.”

Ryan’s dedication and determination have paid off, earning a Division 1 level athletic scholarship to Georgia Tech. A natural shortstop and big fan of the Atlanta Braves, he had the honor of playing in the 2022 Olympic trials, where he saw firsthand how much admiration and respect other countries have for the United States and its culture.

“If you can manage your time well, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. That mindset has helped me stay focused and excel in both academics and athletics."

“Before and after games, I had the chance to sign autographs for young fans from all over the world,” he said. “After winning gold, I truly understood the value of hard work and the importance of not taking my position or platform within baseball for granted.”

As for bestowing advice to younger students looking to master academics and the ballfield, Ryan believes in always having fun — but not slacking off in the classroom.

“Keep your grades up and take pride in being a student too,” he said. “Time management is everything — if you stay disciplined with your schedule, there’s nothing you can’t balance.”

The Perfect 36’ers

Meet the Perfect 36’ers, a wildly impressive group of Houston High seniors with a common thread: They all scored a perfect 36 on their ACT.

The ACT is a stress-inducing rite of passage for high school upperclassmen, with more than 1.4 million test takers annually. They are tested in four major sections: Math, English, Reading and Science. According to the 2023 ACT Profile Report (most recent data), approximately 4,055 students out of these 1.4 million test takers achieved a composite score of 36, which works out to about 0.28% of all examinees.

For a single school to have 8 test takers score a perfect ACT, well that’s rare air indeed.

When asked what best advice you can give for future test takers, Wesley Kim said, “Always stay ahead on time; it allows you to double back to hard questions and maybe even take a small break at the end.” Shirley Long added, “There are endless practice tests on the internet. Regular practice will be one of the best ways to prepare.” ■
