Lea Carr
CHAMPION OF CONNECTION AND 2024 AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR
Lea Carr with Paragon Bank has been named the 2024 Germantown Chamber Ambassador of the Year. This award recognizes those who have gone above and beyond in the community and continue to give of themselves to others. For Carr, serving others and giving back to the community comes naturally, something she’s always sought to do with grace, humility and community pride.
“The Germantown Chamber is uniquely positioned in the community to help businesses of any size grow and to connect to other businesses and organizations while also benefiting the community as a whole,” she says. “I love to serve as an ambassador to give back to the community that we all love so much.”
Ambassadors serve as the welcome wagon for the Germantown Chamber, and we couldn’t do what we do without them. Our ambassador team consists of area professionals that really put in a team effort to support the Germantown Area Chamber and the entire community.
One of the many advantages of the Germantown Area Chamber membership is the abundance of networking
opportunities-monthly meetings, luncheons, award ceremonies and events in the community. Member perks include member media videos, social media blasts, access to the member e-membership list, monthly luncheons and more.
“The chamber is a large family that continues to foster valuable relationships and support local businesses,” she adds. “One of my favorite quotes is ‘Your network is your net worth’, and this is quite evident with the many opportunities to network, promote your business and strengthen our community.”
As an ambassador, Lea volunteers to support the chamber with events (i.e., ribbon cuttings, monthly luncheons, etc.) while also connecting with existing members and welcoming new and potential members.
“It has helped me to meet so many people in the community and make invaluable connections, along with the potential to help me grow my client base,” she says. “Winning Ambassador of the Year is a tremendous honor for me.” ■

A Business Model Destined to Succeed
THE JUNK LLAMAS • ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR
While winning the Germantown Chamber’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award wasn’t exactly on her 2024 bingo card, Junk Llamas co-owner Jessie Amaro feels humbled, honored and quite proud.
“I believe we won because of our dedication to two things,” she says. “Providing the best customer experience possible and building meaningful relationships.”
From full-service junk removal to dumpster rentals, Junk Llamas strives to make the process seamless and stressfree for their customers in an industry where good service generally gets overlooked. The Junk Llamas model stands out because they prioritize convenience, reliability and ecofriendly practices in every service offered.
Junk Llamas started shortly after Amaro graduated from Rhodes College when she and co-owner Lukas Truex turned a simple idea into a thriving business by listening to their customers and adapting to their needs.
The goal of providing convenient, eco-friendly solutions while building strong relationships within the community and an ability to adapt quickly and provide personalized solutions has served them well.
“We could not do what we do without the continued support of the organizations we are part of and the friends we have made along the way,” she says. “Our focus on excellent customer service and on building long-term relationships in the community sets us apart and will drive our continued growth.”
Amaro notes that Junk Llamas also donates and recycles when possible.
“Our main purpose is to provide you with upfront, honest and transparent junk removal.”

Going Above and Beyond for 20+ Years
Crowe HVAC Services has been in business for more than 20 years and was started by J.D. Crowe. His vision for the business started with providing the best customer service available–always going above and beyond to make sure everyone is taken care of and the customer is satisfied.
“That is still our vision and goal today,” says owner Richard Crowe. “We have an amazing team who works extremely hard to make sure we are up to par on our training, certifications, continuing education and code requirements.”
Crowe takes pride in offering a culture that treats its team more like family than co-workers.
“We strive to make sure our employees are well taken care
of-not overworked and able to be home and have family time,” he said.
Richard grew up in Germantown and attended Germantown Elementary School, Germantown Middle School and Germantown High School. He recalls mowing the lawns of many of his customers when he was 13 years old and loves that he is now taking care of their HVAC and plumbing needs.
It would be an understatement to say that Richard is over the moon about winning the Germantown Chamber’s Large Business of the Year Award.
“This award really hits home because I have tried to give back to those who have been so gracious and have done so much for me,” he says.

Germantown Police Look to Make a
Meaningful Impact in the Community
with Crisis Intervention Training
Unlike many communities where tensions between residents and police have grown in recent years, Germantown stands out for its strong, cooperative relationship between the police department and the community. Captain Ben Sharp of the Germantown Police Department (GPD) is dedicated to further strengthening this bond, ensuring Germantown remains a model of trust and collaboration.
Captain Sharp is in his 15th year on the GPD force and is currently the coordinator for the department’s Crisis Intervention Team, or CIT. The program is designed to train officers to navigate situations with individuals who may be experiencing a mental health crisis. Training
covers a range of topics, from de-escalating high stakes situations to tactical communication skills.
Captain Sharp believes the training offers an opportunity to build better relationships within the community and with those individuals that officers may encounter multiple times on what Sharp refers to as “calls of service.”
“We’ll get a phone call from a concerned citizen who sees a homeless person acting odd on the side of the road, or we’ll get calls from concerned family members who have someone that they care about who seems to be in crisis,” he says.

The CIT team is heavily involved not just in Germantown but the entire greater Memphis area. In fact, the first crisis intervention program in the country originated here in Shelby County. In 1987, a tragic incident involving Memphis police officers and the death of a man with a history of mental illness led to community outrage. In response, a crisis intervention program was established to address similar situations in the future. Known as the “Memphis Model,” the program continues to be implemented worldwide.
Thirty-seven years later, the Germantown Police Department has worked to evolve the CIT program while strengthening bonds within the Germantown community.
“We want to achieve peaceful resolutions, and we want people to work with us willingly, recognizing that we’re there to help,” Sharp says. “Then two months later when we run into the exact same person, because that often happens, they’ll remember ‘officer so-and-so’ and that he was really fair to me and took care of me. We build that rapport.”
“There has been positive progress made in continuing to build those relationships with citizens of the community,” Sharp says.
While not all GPD officers are trained and certified in CIT, that is Captain Sharp’s goal. He also notes that thanks and praise should not go to him, but his officers patrolling the streets.
“The patrol officers, the CIT patrolmen, the guys who are out there riding around on the street: they are the workers that make this happen,” he says. “I’m the guy who gets to sit in here and look over the stats and see how we’re doing, but it’s the work of the guys out on the street, riding through neighborhoods connecting with community members that matter most.” ■
THE OPTICAL BOUTIQUE
FAMILY EYECARE
Putting the 'family' in eyecare
Truly a family business, Dr Steven R Shum opened The Optical Boutique Family Eyecare in Germantown in 1975. He built the business on the principle of ‘treat others like you want to be treated’. This meant taking time to listen to his patients and personally educating them on their eye health needs. He believed that, when it comes to eyesight, only the best will do. With that in mind, he chose to offer only the finest quality eyeglasses, contact lenses and treatments available. It also meant using the latest technology to provide the most thorough eye exam possible, all the while, developing great relationships with his patients and staff. His belief paid off. In 2019, the clinic was named Germantown’s small business of the year! This was quite an honor, says his wife, Brister, an MBA who has been the practice administrator for 35 years.
Continuing his father’s legacy, Dr Andrew Shum joined the practice in 2016. Having
literally grown up in the business, Dr Andrew learned as a teenager, the importance of building strong, caring relationships with patients. With special emphasis on the family, Dr Andrew enjoys seeing people of all ages… young and old and everyone in between. His laughter can often be heard throughout the office, making it a fun place to visit.
Adding to the family, Dr Danielle Hebert joined the practice in 2021. Her kind and caring personality make her a favorite amongst both staff and patients.
To celebrate nearly 50 years of serving the Germantown community and surrounding areas, a ‘Horses 10’ speed limit sign was placed on Neshoba in honor of Dr Steven Shum…a fitting tribute since this family also shows horses!
Check them out for all your eyecare needs. You will be treated like family, too!

What I’ve Learned
Retired Pediatrician
Dr.
Lelon “Bubba” Edwards, Jr.
Interview conducted by Stephanie Painter Photography by Alex Ginsburg Photographics
My greatest accomplishment is serving my patients well and the overall relationships, companionship and integration with my families at Pediatrics East. When I retired in December, I had to tell all these people goodbye, and it was hard. When I began practicing, the parents were the babies, and now they are bringing their kids to the practice, so we have two full generations.
I’m most proud of helping kids not be afraid to go to the doctor. I get stories all the time about the kid that had to go to school when the brother had an appointment, and the one at school was mad because he didn't get to come.
The person I admire most: Dr. Bill Threlkeld who started Pediatrics East. He was kind, wise, funny and smart and taught me how to take care of people. I also admire my son-in-law, Andy Sanders, who is the assistant city administrator. Andy worked as the assistant public works director and was then elevated to city engineer and has worked hard to rise up the ladder, and he does a great job.
My advice for someone just starting out is work hard and don’t give up. I tell kids that the way to be the best at something is not by being the smartest; it’s about being the hardest working.
My favorite quote is ‘The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.’ It’s just too easy to get sidetracked by insignificant things.
Find good people and then hire them and make places for them. Dr. Threlkeld gave me this advice. Don’t hire people just to fill a spot. We found good doctors and made places for them and their practices grew. Pediatrics East is a big medical group with four offices, but when I started I was number six. After a few years, I was the practice manager and did that for 22 years, and his advice was the best I’ve ever received.
The worst professional advice I’ve ever received was to quit and give up. When I was in medical school, I failed my first test, so I had to meet with the program director. He said, ‘You might as well pack it up and take it home, son,’ but I decided to stay until Christmas, and it became easier after that. So I advise kids to never quit on their dreams.
It fulfills me to spend time with my wife and family. I have three children and 10 grandkids, and they all live here. We do grandkids stuff at their schools, and most of us get together after church on Sunday. On Halloween, it’s a tradition that we host a chili dinner, and everybody comes over and then goes trick-or-treating.
Germantown is unique because it’s a close-knit community. I’ve lived here for 34 years, and it’s a small town in a big city. I know so many people outside of work-the people at the bank, Germantown Hardware and Starbucks. Everything I need for the most part is within two blocks. Our house and neighborhood have been precious. Our neighbors have six grown kids and they now have grandkids, and they’ve lived across the street for 34 years. In our neighborhood, we all had children that are around our children’s ages, and we all grew up together.
The best thing about living in Germantown are the police and fire departments hands down. Every time I see police officers here, I tell them, “You’re the reason I live here.” I have three grandchildren at Riverdale Elementary School, and the Germantown schools are great.
In retirement, find something you enjoy. I plan to do woodworking projects. We have a lake house in Heber Springs, so I’ll spend time there working on the boat. I have a big black Goldendoodle, and we walk the trails. ■
• CAMPBELL CLINIC CELEBRATES 116 YEARS OF ORTHOPAEDIC INNOVATION
•

THIS YEAR, CAMPBELL CLINIC CELEBRATES
116 YEARS of innovation as a world-renowned orthopaedic clinic known for pioneering some of the greatest advancements in surgery, physician training and medical technology.
Founded in Memphis in 1909 by Jackson, Mississippi native Dr. Willis Campbell, a pediatrician with a growing interest in orthopaedics and surgery. His research eventually led him away from Memphis and pediatrics to London and later Vienna, where he studied orthopaedic surgery before eventually returning to Memphis to establish Campbell Clinic.
“The founding of Campbell Clinic was significant historically, as during this time period, orthopaedic surgeons did not practice outside of major cities like New York, Philadelphia and Boston,” says Campbell Clinic Chief of Staff and physician Dr. Frederick Azar. “Dr. Campbell later established a residency program, the first of its kind in the region.”
Since its founding, the clinic’s residency program has developed best practices and guidelines for future orthopaedic surgeons in training, while the clinic itself has become one of the most respected
orthopaedic centers in the world. In 1910, the University of Tennessee medical campus opened, where Dr. Campbell was appointed to organize the orthopaedic surgery department, a position he held until his death in 1941.
Dr. Campbell’s influence as a leader in orthopaedic associations and publishing is also notable, and Campbell Clinic has continued his legacy. He co-founded The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and served as its first president. He later published the first comprehensive textbook on orthopaedic surgery, Campbell’s Operative Orthopedics (first released in 1939 and now in its 15th edition), which set the standard for orthopaedic reference books and is widely considered “the bible of orthopaedic surgery."
In 1946, the Campbell Clinic Foundation was chartered to support resident education, and in 1990, the foundation formally partnered with University of TennesseeMemphis Department of Orthopaedic Surgery to manage the residency program. Today, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center-Campbell Clinic orthopaedic surgery residency program houses 40 of the best and brightest orthopaedic residents. This legacy of education is upheld as Campbell Clinic doctors teach and lecture globally, continuing Dr. Campbell’s mission of advancing knowledge.
One of Campbell Clinic’s most notable attributes is its ability to stay at the forefront of medical advancements and innovative surgical technology. “It starts with our predecessors,” says Dr. Frederick Azar. “We promote innovation in all areas of orthopaedic care, from sports medicine and joint replacements to pediatric orthopaedic care.”

Dr. Azar’s contributions to Campbell Clinic’s legacy are significant. His impressive career as a well-known and respected orthopaedic surgeon has allowed him numerous professional opportunities, including team physician for the Memphis Grizzlies for 22 seasons, co-author and editor of multiple medical publications and leadership roles in international medical organizations.
Dr. Azar notes that one of Campbell Clinic’s conductors of success and innovation is its culture of embracing evidencebased research conducted both independently and in collaboration with other institutions around the world, ensuring every new surgical technique, training process or other innovation is both safe and effective.
“This balance between progress and prudence has made Campbell Clinic a trusted institution,” says Dr. Azar. “We’re not just testing things to see if they work; we’re creating industry standards and teaching the next generation of surgeons based on what we have shown to be true in studies. We work hard to preserve our culture of faith, family and patient care.”
Campbell Clinic has pioneered remarkable advancements in orthopaedic care, setting new standards in areas such as sports medicine, trauma, joint replacement, pediatric orthopaedic care, physical therapy and spinal surgery, and orthopaedic oncology.
In 1986 the clinic developed the Russell-Taylor Nail, transforming the treatment of long bone fractures and allowing for rapid post-surgery recovery and mobility.
In recent years, the clinic’s physicians pioneered outpatient joint replacement surgery, allowing patients to go home on the same day—a once-unthinkable practice now considered standard.
In 2014, Dr. Jeffrey Sawyer was the first Memphis surgeon to conduct a surgical procedure using
the MAGEC system for pediatric scoliosis, a non-invasive approach which has improved outcomes for scoliosis patients worldwide.
The Campbell Clinic Foundation supports surgical advancements and endeavors which impact the Mid-South region and beyond. The Foundation facilitates surgical education through the 100-yearold medical residency and fellowship programs, conducts leading-edge orthopaedic research and hosts communityfocused programming. According to Executive Director Jenny Koltnow, the foundation is the backbone of Campbell Clinic.
“Orthopaedic innovation has revolutionized patient care and offered new ways to heal, relieve pain, restore mobility and sustain an active lifestyle,” says Koltnow. “We’re defined by the legacy of teaching and leading in our field. The Campbell Clinic Foundation attracts, educates and supports orthopaedic surgeons and healthcare professionals, who in turn, provide best-in-class patient care.” ■

Beating the Odds
Written by Erinn Figg

On a Friday afternoon in November, Germantown Fire Chief Eric Grizzard is addressing a diverse audience at Fire Station 4, including medical professionals, school representatives, neighborhood leaders and first responders. Their shared mission: make Germantown a HEARTsafe Community.
An American Heart Association HEARTsafe Community designation recognizes cities committed to improving cardiac arrest survival rates. This is achieved through widespread CPR training, increased access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and public awareness campaigns. The initiative requires collaboration among community leaders, emergency responders and healthcare professionals.
“In the past, a cardiac emergency meant simply dropping off the patient at the hospital,” Grizzard says. “Now, it’s a whole new system. It has to be a community effort.”
The Germantown Fire Department responds to 5,000 calls annually, 70 percent of which are medical emergencies. Among these are 45 to 60 cardiac arrests each year. With an average response time of six minutes, Germantown’s first responders work quickly and efficiently, but bystander intervention remains critical. To that end, Grizzard aims to train 6,000 residents annually—15 percent of the city’s population—in hands-only CPR, partnering with Methodist Germantown Hospital, Houston High School, local churches and neighborhood groups.
Germantown’s approach to cardiac care has evolved significantly. In 2017, the Fire Department became one of the first in the nation to adopt a neuroprotective bundle of care, integrating advanced tools like the Elegard Patient Positioning System for “Heads-Up CPR,” the Lucas Device for high-quality chest compressions, and the resQPOD to enhance blood flow to the brain and heart.
“Our neuroprotective CPR program is state-ofthe-art,” EMS Chief Jerome Cole says. “We’ve achieved a 48 percent return of spontaneous circulation rate, far surpassing the national average of under 10 percent. Additionally, our 21 percent survival-to-discharge rate exceeds the national average of just 4 percent.”
“Bystander CPR is the most impactful link in the survival chain, designating Germantown as a HEARTsafe Community will enhance survival rates and create a healthier, more resilient city.”
—EMS CHIEF JEROME COLE
Through partnerships like the one with Methodist Germantown Hospital, Germantown Fire Department earned American College of Cardiology accreditation in 2022. Over the past three years, the program has seen 16 cardiac arrest survivors return home neurologically intact.
“Bystander CPR is the most impactful link in the survival chain,” Cole says. “Designating Germantown as a HEARTsafe Community will enhance survival rates and create a healthier, more resilient city.”
Visit Germantown-TN.gov/CPR for a quick lesson on bystander CPR.

DIALING 911? HERE’S WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
When you call 911, every second counts, and understanding what to expect can make all the difference. Whether reporting an emergency or seeking immediate assistance, staying calm and prepared is key.
When you dial 911, your call is answered by a trained dispatcher at the City’s emergency communications center. They will ask a series of questions to gather critical information, such as your location, the nature of the emergency and whether anyone is injured or in immediate danger. Answering these questions clearly and concisely helps dispatchers send the appropriate first responders–Police, Fire or Emergency Medical Services–to your location as quickly as possible.
In many cases, help is already on the way while you’re still on the phone. Dispatchers are trained to provide instructions, such as how to perform CPR or stay safe in dangerous situations, until responders arrive.
“When we answer 911, two dispatchers are always on the phone,” Germantown Police Captain Sciara Childress says. “One dispatcher is listening to your concern and typing everything into the system. The other dispatcher is getting the call dispatched to send you the help you need. This allows the first dispatcher to continue with our questions, which may include medical instructions, so we can continue to
update police, fire or EMS before they reach the scene.”
It’s important to stay on the line until the dispatcher says it’s okay to hang up.
Remember, 911 is for emergencies only. Non-urgent matters should be directed to (901)-754-7222 from a landline or *54 from a cell phone.
“We want the public to know that we’re human, too,” Childress says. “We also have emergencies. When you call 911, we want to give you the best customer service and get you the same help as we would want if we called 911 ourselves.” ■
GERMANTOWN CLINIC AT EPICENTER OF SPINAL CARE INNOVATION
Written by Jake Thompson
by Alex Ginsburg Photographics
Thanks to the work of Dr. Kevin Foley and Semmes Murphy’s world-class specialists, Memphis is becoming the epicenter of spinal care, with the innovative procedures taking place in Germantown benefiting both our community and the world at large.
Dr. Kevin Foley of Semmes Murphy has spent several decades perfecting innovations in minimally invasive spine surgery. The focus of a majority of his life’s work has been making spinal and back surgeries as painless as possible while also trying to minimize recovery time.
Due to his innovations in the field, what used to be one of the most extensive surgeries the human body could experience is now considered a relatively quick outpatient procedure with far less recovery time. Most of Dr. Foley’s patients are back home and sleeping in their own beds the same night of their procedure.
The tools and techniques Dr. Foley is credited with advancing are now used around the world, including the use of tubular retractors and the percutaneous screw fixation technique which allow surgeons to fuse spinal components through small one-inch incisions, eliminating the major incisions that previously caused spinal surgeries to be more intensive with longer and more painful recovery times.
“We have developed the techniques and tools that allow a surgeon to carry out those procedures successfully,” Foley said. “Part of that has involved a project where we built a small robot to assist us with minimally invasive procedures, but believe it or not, it’s only a small piece of the puzzle.”
“With these tools, there is less pain, less blood loss and the rate of infection is almost zero,” Dr. Foley says. “Because there is not as much cutting and tissue damage, very rarely do we see an infection, and patients recover rapidly compared to old open surgeries.” ■
