North America’s largest cycling event will return to Elk Grove on May 17.

The City will host Stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California women’s race and the Stage 5 finish of the men’s race. More than 250 professional riders are expected to traverse the city during these races.

Stroll through the Fitness Festival, bring the kids out for the free kids’ zone, watch athletes battle it out in the Elk Grove Gauntlet, and have fun watching the little ones make their way through the Kids Warrior Challenge obstacle course. Prizes include an oil change kit and FREE car washes!

Stop by one or both of the upcoming Oil Filter Exchange events for a free oil filter and a chance to win prizes, food, and fun! Hosted by the City of Elk Grove and funded by a CalRecycle grant, this event offers participants a new oil filter in exchange for a used one. Filters are of equal or lesser value, and exchanges are limited to two per person.

PG&E Electric Tower Maintenance Program

As part of its mission to become the safest energy provider, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is proactively improving its Electric Tower Maintenance Program. In an effort to help maintain and upgrade the safety of the electric grid, PG&E is ending the use of lead-based paint on electric transmission towers and will be recoating towers with a new non-lead-based paint.

The work is scheduled to begin in the City of Elk Grove in March and will address approximately 35 towers located throughout the city this year. This program puts people first and prioritizes towers located near homes, schools, and parks. The work will not affect electric service in any way.

This two-hour class, taught by a master gardener, will teach you how to naturally create a soil amendment that helps the productivity of your plants! Composting is nature’s recycling system for organic material, such as leaves, grass clippings, yard prunings, and certain types of food waste. All participants will receive a FREE starter compost bin and a free bag of compost.

All attendees are asked to bring one nonperishable food item for the Elk Grove Food Bank.

Elk Grove Civic Summer 2018— Learn While You Earn Credits!

Summer Internships Available in Local Government

Students accepted into the Elk Grove Civic Summer program will gain valuable work experience, learning about local government and issues facing the Elk Grove community while earning summer school credits. Students will first prepare for the internship by participating in classroom study between June 18 and 29. Students will then intern at the City of Elk Grove, Elk Grove Unified School District, or other partner agencies between July 9 and 27. This program is open to Elk Grove Unified School District sophomores (class of 2020) and juniors (class of 2019) with preference given to students enrolled in a high school career academy or pathway. Space is limited.
