Jetty Memorial Theatre Season Guide 2023

Page 1

Welcome

WOW 2023!

This year is about taking a journey, expanding limitations and exploring other places, providing a fresh outlook and encouraging a flourishing and opening up of ideas and possibilities. It’s about cutting an optimistic path through the recent reality we’ve all been through.

There’s been a lot to unpack over the last couple of years with a real push to look inward and see what’s on offer in our own back yard. There’s a definite sense of moving forward and embracing a new normal and not the old normal and having to regroup and re think about what really matters. Alice in Wonderland summed this up nicely when she said “It’s no use going back to yesterday as I was a different person then.”

2023 at the Jetty Theatre sees a year of uplifting experiences. There’s something for everyone to enjoy, from theatrical magic, daring exploits, fun and farcical rides, distinctly Australian stories and adventures to far off places. Take a chance to see something that will stir up your ideas and emotions as we showcase a diversity of artforms - theatre, film, music, comedy, cabaret, circus and lots for kids and families - alongside the work of our highly talented local artists. Let your imagination soar and allow magic to happen.

We thank you for your continued involvement and support of the theatre by being part of what we do. Your willingness to trust us to deliver a quality program enables us to strive towards authenticity and integrity.

So step inside! You never know what’s just beyond those doors as we dare to celebrate the magic of theatre and community spirit. We’re a venue that’s accessible to all, so whether you’re a regular theatre goer or it’s your first time, we just ask you to take a chance and explore what we have on offer. We do really think that there’s something for everyone.

Life is better when it’s live. Let’s take a journey together!

We acknowledge the Gumbaynggirr people as the first artists, the first storytellers, the first creators of culture and the Traditional Custodians of this Land. We pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.

SCREEN ADDICTION

Do you love staring at screens? Are you staring at a screen right now? You should get out more. Specifically, to a show that has an enormous screen smack-bang in the middle of it.

The Umbilicals take the energy of live performance and the spectacle of cinema and smash them together into a new show performed simultaneously on stage and the big screen. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen, and nothing they’ve ever done, and it will blow your mind way more literally than you are expecting.

The Umbilical Brothers are an international comedy phenomenon. Their unique mix of mind-bending comedy and back-breaking physicality has taken

them to 40 countries; from stadiums supporting Robin Williams to stadiums supporting N’Sync.

Named as two of Entertainment Weekly’s “100 Most Creative People In Entertainment,” they have appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, after James Brown at Woodstock ’99, and before the Queen of England. Younger fans and stoners know them from The Upside Down Show which won them an Emmy and a Logie.

They haven’t just broken down the rules of theatre; they’ve invented a new theatrical multiverse. Unbelievable human performances meets specialeffects wizardry. It feels so much like magic, you’ll want to burn them at the stake.

Wild Thyme is an exciting meeting between three of regional Australia’s brilliantly talented, versatile, and captivating female artists. Coming from diverse musical and cultural backgrounds, the juxtaposition of Arlene Fletcher, double bass, Katie Crane, guitar, and Laura Targett, fiddle, infuses their varied musical passions into an exciting brew of acoustic music which defies genre and cultivating a whole new style of their own.

This debut album release celebrates their diversity and divergence of genres as this

trio commands their musical sound. Wild Thyme are looking forward to gracing the stage of the Jetty Theatre AGAIN and with a bang!

DEBUT CD and MERCH will be available on the night.

I was among the many lucky folk who witnessed this remarkable trio - what a show! Each member is a virtuoso on her instrument and the vocal harmonies are melodic and tuneful. Their humility underpinning their superb talent is a formidable combination.” Audience Member

HOW FAR

YOU GO FOR A FRIEND?

WOULD

A provocative story for our times, this funny and poignant new Australian play by award-winning writer Suzanne Hawley is both a comedy and a tragedy.

A tale of sea eagles and pole dancing, of children and childhood dreams, of religion and rock ‘n roll. Most of all this is a tale of friendships that have stood the test of time. Until now.

Jackie, Elizabeth, Frances and Susan become besties at high school and find freedom in Swinging London a decade later. After that they carve out very different lives for themselves and don't see each other as often, but always meet up once a year for the ‘Musketeer’s dinner’.

But this year is different.

Past sixty, older but no wiser, the most radical member of the group is in crisis. To offer their support, the ‘Musketeers’ take Jackie back to her country home for a weekend – to relax and let their hair down. What could possibly go wrong?

What follows tests their friendship, their morals and their courage as never before.

And a final twist will change their lives forever.

STREAMING KILLED THE VIDEO STORE. AND THAT’S NOT ALL WE LOST…

Re:group performance collective and JMT Touring Presents

Co-created by Mark Rogers, Solomon Thomas, Steve Wilson-Alexander & Carly Young.

An immediate hit with critics and audiences, Coil is one of those rare productions: gobsmackingly clever in its execution whilst being funny, warm hearted and deeply resonant.

Blurring the boundaries of theatre and cinema, this innovative new work draws on our collective memories to pay tribute to the glory days of the video store and the communities we made within them.

Coil reflects upon the joys, perils and pitfalls of nostalgia, and how we grapple with goodbyes to move on.

Creating new work at the very edge of video technology and live performance, re:group mash theatre and moviemaking together to create ‘live cinema’. Inspired by the highs and lows of pop culture, re:group aim to turn typically comfortable and passive viewing experiences into something immersive, irreverent, and inherently live.

Don’t miss this playful, one-of-a-kind live cinema experience.

A DETECTIVE STORY TOLD WITH PUPPETRY

Can you help solve the case?

A Little Bit of Blue is an interactive environmental detective story, told with puppetry. As well as unravelling a mystery, it involves learning about the unique habits of an extraordinary Australian animal, the Satin Bowerbird, and its fascination with the colour blue. It is a fun, frolicking mix of Detective Noir and slapstick, combined with learning about this intriguing creature.

Something has gone missing and is nowhere to be found. Mrs Mavis Hooley has been looking everywhere. Every day a new thing seems to disappear. Little things. A $10 note. A ball of wool. It’s

troubling at first, but the thief then takes it one step too far!

Mavis calls in a Detective to investigate. A stake out is required. In the dead of night, and the Detective indeed finds something peculiar…. The children’s role is to help him solve the case.

Jenny Ellis, a puppeteer of more than twenty years, weaves the whole mystery together.

WHAT’S HAPPENING TO WINTER?

Presented by Siren Theatre Company, Critical Stages Touring and JMT Touring

Will climate change erase winter leaving it to exist only in fairy tales, paintings, and historical accounts? In hot, bushfireprone Australia our winters are becoming warmer and shorter. The End of Winter is about loss and resilience. It’s about the places one can search for cold weather —places that can be reached via public transport and the imagination.

This is a new work for the stage that speaks to our current climate crisis. Written in the wake of the devastation of the 2019 bush fires it asks: What’s happening to winter?

Noëlle Janaczewska is a multi-awardwinning Australian writer whose plays, radio scripts, libretti, fiction, and essays have been performed, broadcast and published throughout Australia and overseas.

The themes and ideas contained within The End of Winter lean into the most significant issue of our time –the changing climate and the loss of seasons.

Noëlle’s unfailing ability to ignite universal emotions and laughter in all of us while gloriously revealing her own exquisite uniqueness is one of this piece’s great joys. This is a feminist work, which explores shifting identities - writer, child, carer, lover, explorer.” Director Kate Gaul

STAGE MAGIC

Based on the book by Mem Fox and Julie Vivas. Adapted by Eva Di Cesare and Sandra Eldridge. Directed by Sandra Eldridge.

The magical stage adaptation of the beloved Australian story is back to celebrate its 40th birthday.

Mem Fox and Julie Vivas’ beloved picture book ‘Possum Magic’ has enchanted children for decades and Monkey Baa Theatre Company brings the paper and ink to life on stage once again using a clever, nuanced palette of live action, stage magic, an original soundscape, elements of puppetry and projected animation.

Grandma Poss loves making magic. She makes wombats blue and kookaburras pink. She makes dingoes smile and emus shrink. But one day, when danger arrives in the form of a snake, Grandma uses her most magical spell to make Hush invisible. Hush has many wonderful adventures. But being invisible isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and Hush longs to see herself again. One problem. Grandma Poss can’t find the spell to make Hush visible again. And then she remembers... this particular magic requires something more, something special, something to do with food... people food. Possum Magic takes us on a whimsical journey to cities around Australia to find the food that makes Hush visible again.

Recommended for ages 3-8 years and their families.

THOSE FOLK

Charismatic, authentic and thoroughly entertaining, Lawrence Menard (USA) and Clare Quinn (AUS) are the transpacific-troubadours known as ‘Those Folk.’ Having met in Scotland in 2012, they have since travelled extensively and lived in the pine forest mountains of California. They now hang their travelling hats in Pomona, Queensland.

A partnership forged in the fires of folk music, Those Folk explore sounds from the 1960’s folk revival and contemporary Americana music. Breathtaking vocal harmonies are featured alongside rich instrumental work performed on guitars, accordion, mandolin and banjo. As songwriters, Lawrence & Clare delve into love, hope, belonging, and the human condition. As performers they enthral, enchant, and leave a lasting impression. Lawrence & Clare have been compared to the likes of Simon & Garfunkel and Angus & Julia Stone. Those Folk make not just folk music, but music for all sorts of folk.

AVENUE Q

Avenue Q is a musical comedy featuring puppets and human actors. It won Best Musical, Book, and Score at the 2004 Tony Awards. The show's format is a parody of PBS's Sesame Street, but its content involves adult-oriented themes.

It has been praised for its approach to themes of racism, homosexuality and internet pornography.

The show is often described as Sesame Street on steroids, and comes with

warnings for crude language, adult concepts and puppet sex. The laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that, although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighbourhood.
