City of Coffs Harbour acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, the Gumbaynggirr people, who have cared for this land since time immemorial. We pay our respects to their elders past, present and emerging, and commit ourselves to a future with reconciliation and renewal at its heart.

I hope you enjoy the summer edition of our quarterly magazine, filled with stories about successful community partnerships, commercial innovations and great things happening in our City over summer. You can read about the groundswell of community contributions for the latest YAM exhibition, and how local gardeners are sharing their seeds as part of a new libraries initiative.
We’re also celebrating the valued partnership between the City and the Friends of the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden, which continues to ensure this amazing inner-city oasis is maintained for everyone to enjoy.
On the innovation front, we share the story of how the City’s innovative precast bridge structures are contributing to safer road access in our own community while also generating revenue for the City through our partnerships with other Councils – we’re truly spanning the state with our innovation in this space.
And with summer holidays here, our holiday parks are hitting peak season. These City-run facilities are thriving, continuing to be a major drawcard for our region. With their picture-perfect settings and topnotch facilities, our parks provide an ideal home base for families and groups of friends to enjoy the best of what Coffs Harbour has to offer, and in turn, they provide a significant boost to our local economy!

FIELD OF DREAMS PULLING OUT THE STOPS FOR A PITCH-PERFECT WICKET
After a massive 2024, the whistle has blown on the final event of the year at C.ex Coffs International Stadium, and preparations are well underway for another Sydney Sixers Big Bash League clash to kick off the New Year.
Renovations have started on the outfield, involving coring, scarifying and applying 250 tonnes of top dressing to the surface to ensure it’s play-ready for the sport’s top-tier cricketers come 3 January.
And while many of us are slowing down towards the Christmas break, the timeline for wicket preparation is ramping up. Wicket preparation is a delicate and skilled task that’s crucial to provide a playing surface that ensures fair competition, good playability, and player safety.
The wicket has to provide the right balance for batters, bowlers and fielders, requiring careful management of soil composition, moisture, rolling, and surface texture.
The City’s greenkeeping team has a proven track record for delivering exceptional surfaces for elite sporting groups and for BBL, this means daily attention in the lead up to the event.
And as for event day, Acting Director City Planning and Communities Ian Fitzgibbon said the City will be rolling out the stops to make it a super-friendly event for families.
“We’ll have face-painting, giveaways, and a host of fun activities for the kids at the stadium,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.
“It’s always an electric atmosphere at C.ex Coffs International Stadium for the BBL, and we’re expecting a sell-out crowd again this year. With food trucks on site and a swag of Sixers merch available for purchase, it’s sure to be a great night out.”
The gates, bar and food outlets will open at 4.05pm, with the match scheduled to start at 6.05pm.
Secure your tickets today before they sell out. Family-friendly prices start from $9 for kids, $35 for adults and $70 for families.
Stuck for Christmas gift ideas? The BBL is a fantastic family event so why not give the gift of tickets!

BRIDGING THE GAPS
OUR INNOVATION SPANNING
THE STATE
City of Coffs Harbour has supercharged its own bridge-building program, with its in-house expertise and specialist construction facility also in hot demand from other Councils across NSW.
The City took an innovative step in 2020 to convert a storage yard into a specialised construction facility for precast concrete bridge beams, which is now helping fast-track the replacement of priority timber bridges across the Local Government Area.
The proactive approach has caught the eye and interest of other Councils.
City of Coffs Harbour commercially supplies, and in many cases builds, replacement bridges for other local governments across the state. The City has undertaken 14 bridge projects for other Councils, worth about $11 million in total, while it has supplied the precast materials for another five projects worth about $1.5 million.
The City’s Acting Infrastructure Director Daniel Noble says it is a win-win situation.
“We’ve increased the replacement rate for older timber bridges in our own region, which provides safer road access for people, especially in more
remote areas, as well as longer-lasting structures with lower maintenance costs,” Mr Noble said.
“By March 2025, 18 local bridges will have been replaced since 2021.
“Additionally, the precast construction facility gives us something unique to build stronger partnerships with other Councils and to generate commercial returns for our City.
“We’ve supplied bridges and products to neighbouring Councils at Armidale, Bellingen, Clarence Valley and Kempsey, while the team recently completed a bridge more than 400km away in Cessnock.”
The precast facility has been profitable every year since day dot and has a healthy list of work ahead, stimulated by the NSW Government’s $500 million Fixing Country Bridges program.
Bridges replaced in the local area include two on Old Coast Road, Korora, while the largest was a $2.9 million bridge over the Bobo River, near Brooklana.
“We’re a leading Council in this space, boasting our own facility and expert staff from highway bridge building backgrounds,” Mr Noble said.

HOLIDAY BOOKINGS RUN HOT AT CITY FACILITIES
Local residents are big winners as visitor numbers at Coffs Coast Holiday Parks continue to soar well above national norms.
City of Coffs Harbour owns and operates four self-funded parks along the Coffs Coast and the collective profits help fund broader projects and make resident rates go further.
BIG4 Park Beach, BIG4 Sawtell Beach, Woolgoolga Beach and Woolgoolga Lakeside Holiday Parks accommodate a whopping 370,000 guest nights each year, generating some $15 million in annual revenue, and far exceeding industry occupancy benchmarks.
City of Coffs Harbour Director Business Services Steve Bayliss said the numbers signal a win-win for visitors and locals.
“We provide the Coffs-pitality so tourists and visitors get a taste of the beautiful place we call home,” Mr Bayliss said.
“But it’s also a huge boost to the local economy, with holiday park guests spending an estimated $54 million in the local government area by each year.
“Importantly, the City’s four holiday parks are completely self-funded, we don’t use a single cent from ratepayers. All improvements to the parks are financed through their own revenue.
“Additionally, revenue from the Holiday Parks can be reinvested into local parks and reserves. In the past few years, the parks have contributed over $2.5 million to local projects such as operations at the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden and maintenance of the Jetty Foreshores. We are knocking it out of the park!”
Customer satisfaction tells a wonderful story too, with ratings consistently in the ‘excellent’ range and the majority of guests reporting they would recommend the parks to a friend.
BIG4 Sawtell Beach guest, Tamika, raved: “This is one of the best holiday parks I have ever stayed in!”

MAKING CULTURAL WAVES
ART, SPORT AND COMMUNITY
COLLIDE
Community spirit is at the heart of the latest exhibition at Yarrila Arts and Museum - Swell Chasers: Surf Stories from the Mid North Coast.
More than 200 stakeholders collaborated with the team from City of Coffs Harbour to develop the exhibition, which explores a kaleidoscope of stories from the Mid North Coast’s surfing landscape. From Gumbaynggirr surfers’ relationship with the land and sea, to the surf lifestyle that emerged in the '60s and '70s, iconic road trips, the pioneering surf shops, clubs and schools, and the rise of local legends, it’s all been uncovered and on display until 2 February.
“This region is interwoven with the stories of legendary surfers, surf culture, and a deep connection to the ocean - it’s a bond that has inspired generations, and it's a part of the very fabric of this region,” said City of Coffs Harbour Mayor, Nikki Williams.
“Swell Chasers: Surf Stories from the Mid North Coast is testament to the creativity and passion of our local surfers, board-shapers, artists, and filmmakers, and those who generously loaned items from their treasured personal collections to bring this exhibition to life.”
The exhibition includes approximately 500 objects and 1500 digital images spanning surfboards and bodyboards, photographs, digitised magazines, clothing, trophies, artwork and film. The
City’s curators visited surfers across multiple generations up and down the Mid North Coast to record stories and uncover never-before-seen objects for public display.
The exhibition recognises the pioneering achievements of locals such as Hilary (Nicholson) Melittas who placed third in the World Surf Titles in Manly in 1964, and Helene Enevoldson who established Australia’s first surf school in Coffs Harbour in 1992.
It showcases the work of 36 individual surfboard manufacturers traversing Angourie to Crescent Head, along with other memorabilia including shaping tools and photographs of board making in action from sheds, backyards, and converted banana farms.
Generations of Gumbaynggirr surfers are represented through photographs, film footage and artwork, and a surf film by BathTime Productions commissioned for the exhibition combines vintage and contemporary footage to take viewers on a paddle through the headlands and bays of the region.
City of Coffs Harbour Acting Director City Planning and Communities Ian Fitzgibbon said that as a local surfer, he is stoked to see the exhibition come together.
“Arts, sports, the culture of the community coming together in this one exhibition – this is a surf session you won’t want to miss!” Mr Fitzgibbon said.
THE GEM ON OUR DOORSTEP A SUMMER OASIS FOR PEOPLE AND KOALAS
ALIKE
In the heart of summer, the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden (NCRBG) is an inner-City sanctuary where the tree’s canopies offer a perfect refuge from the sun's fervent gaze.
Tourism Research Australia data shows demand for nature-based visitor experiences grew by 47 per cent over the past decade and visitation to botanic or public gardens saw the highest growth (85 per cent). Lucky for us, NCRBG is a local gem to enjoy year-round!
Sprawling across 20 hectares, the NCRBG has something for everyone. Accessible through the Coffs Coast Explorer App, The Best of the Botanic Gardens Interactive Trail is a mostly flat circuit walk that follows sealed paths and boardwalks to some of the garden’s best spots.
Meander through lush littoral rainforests and marvel as the landscape unfolds into a panorama of green hues and vibrant blooms. From a Japanese-inspired garden to beautiful glasshouses filled with exotic plants, there are so many secluded spots where the tranquillity of nature will surprise and delight.
“The North Coast Regional Botanic Garden is a major tourist attraction with more than 100,000 visitors every year,” City of Coffs Harbour Mayor Nikki Williams said.
“The Garden recently received a welldeserved feature and national coverage on Better Homes and Gardens, so the secret’s well and truly out about this oasis on the edge of our CBD.”
NCRBG is open every day of the year and entry is free. Visitors can even book a buggy tour or transport to and from one of the picnic areas, which are great options for those with mobility restrictions.
“The Botanic Garden is a great place to go to escape the summer heat,” says City of Coffs Harbour Acting Director City Infrastructure, Daniel Noble.
“Stroll through the rainforest and natural areas or visit the sensory garden to enjoy the roses and the arbour covered with slipper vine (Thumbergia mysorensis), which gives a stunning display at this time of the year. Next to the sensory garden you’ll find the glass house with the lipstick palm (Cyrtostachys renda) displaying its vibrant red colours.”
City of Coffs Harbour works in partnership with the Friends of the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden Inc. to maintain and develop the NCRBG, recently formalised via a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Under the MOU, the City remains responsible for the dayto-day management of the garden, with the Friends playing a key role through the thousands of volunteer hours they provide.

REAP WHAT YOU SOW LOCAL SEED LIBRARIES BLOOMIN’ MARVELLOUS
Summer gardens are flourishing in locals’ backyards and Coffs Harbour Libraries are continuing to add to their innovative community services by adding seed libraries at the three branches - in Coffs Harbour, Toormina and Woolgoolga.
The new free program enables library members to ‘borrow’ seeds in the same way as they might borrow books.
There is no due date on the loan, library members can simply borrow, grow, and enjoy the harvest. They are then encouraged to return some seeds to the library, or donate other dried heirloom seeds, for others to enjoy.
“A seed library is about sharing and generosity within the community, so it becomes self-sustaining,” City of Coffs Harbour Acting Director City Planning and Communities Ian Fitzgibbon said.
“It encourages community connection and supports sustainable practicesyour local library is now a go-to place for tips and resources for a bountiful garden crop.
“Our Coffs Harbour Libraries continue to evolve and are vibrant community hubs, with some 57 per cent of the
Coffs region now library members. The seed libraries will add to the diversity of our collections, which already include special cake tins, STEM kits, board games, jigsaw puzzles, online study resources and so much more.”
Library members will be able to borrow two packets of seeds per visit and there are currently more than 40 varieties of seeds available.
Going forward, seed varieties will change depending on seasons, donations and availability.
"I encourage you to visit your library regularly to see what seeds are available for you to grow and keep an eye on the libraries website for gardening-focused programs,” Mr Fitzgibbon said.
“By continuing to share successful seeds, community members will also strengthen biodiversity and food security by growing more plants that are adapted to local conditions.
“Growing plants and saving seeds is also a great opportunity for adults and children to learn about the lifecycle of plants.”
A seed library is about sharing and generosity within the community, so it becomes self-sustaining.

LIFE’S A BEACH... SUMMER SURF TIPS FROM COFFS HARBOUR LIFEGUARDS
It’s heating up and that means beach weather! In Coffs, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to great beaches. From family friendly beaches including Jetty beach to well-known surf spots such as Arrawarra, there is a beach for everyone. Beach conditions can change quickly with the tides, weather and other factors.
City of Coffs Harbour’s Lifeguards have created the below tips for you to remember when visiting the beach.
ALWAYS SWIM BETWEEN THE RED & YELLOW FLAGS.
Lifeguards place the flags where it is safest to swim, and they will be observing this area and will notice if you need help.
LOOK FOR BEACH SAFETY SIGNS.
Lifeguards place signs on the beach to let you know of any dangers that may be present – look for these signs before you go into the water to be aware of dangers.
SAY HELLO TO A LIFEGUARD.
When you arrive at the beach, go and say hello to the lifeguards – they are there to help and they love to meet new people and answer your questions.
NEVER SWIM ALONE.
Always swim with a friend or an adult and never go into the water by yourself.
It’s always a good idea to tell someone where you are going for a swim, before you leave home.
IF YOU GET INTO TROUBLE IN THE WATER, STAY CALM FLOAT ON YOUR BACK AND RAISE YOUR ARM.
Remember to stay calm and raise your arm for help. Try to float on your back and if you feel you are being pulled away from the shore avoid trying to swim against the current.
IN AN EMERGENCYCALL TRIPLE ZERO (000)
If you cannot swim, do not try to rescue other people who are in trouble. Always get help – if a lifeguard is not available call triple zero (000).
BRING A FLOATATION DEVICE WHEN VISITING THE BEACH
Bring a flotation device like a surfboard or bodyboard when you come to the beach – they’re useful for getting yourself and others out of trouble! Look around, many Coffs Harbour beaches have remote rescue tubes installed for public use

TOP TIPS
WATER EFFICIENCY
Did you know the City of Coffs Harbour Local Government Area uses an average of 17 megalitres (million litres) of water every day? By working together to protect this vital resource, we can meet the demands of a growing population and the challenges of a changing climate.
More than 1,000 primary school children and their family members signed up for the City of Coffs Harbour’s Big Splash Water Saving Challenge between August and October. They learnt about some of the steps we can all take every day to conserve water.
1. Take a 3-4 minute shower. Showering for 4 minutes instead of 10 can save 54 litres of water a day!
2. Only use the washing machine and dishwasher when they’re full.
3. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.
4. Water your garden wisely. Use mulch, water at dusk or dawn, and use a trigger nozzle or watering can, to reduce water wastage.
5. Fix leaking taps and toilets. A leaking toilet can waste as much as 260 litres of water every day!
If your water bill is higher than usual and you suspect you may have a concealed leak, learn how to check for this using your water meter here
