being available at Henley Beach. With beach wheelchairs, and now walkers, available to hire for free (accessed via a MLAK key in the lockers behind the Henley Surf Life Saving Club), it makes this precinct an ideal destination to visit for an hour or all day.

Hindmarsh Precinct, at Woodville Road and the soon to be completed Military Road and Main Street at Henley. These improvements are important to both our residents and businesses and help us to provide wonderful places and spaces for our community.

Spring – no matter how wet it remains - is a time to stretch our legs and get back into the garden. This October, we are again part of Nature Festival which celebrates and shares a strong environmental and sustainability message through our Climate and Net Zero tours, plant giveaways as well as our Green Enviro and Verges Alive event.

Speaking of Net Zero, our Beverley Centre is now all electric and we are well on the way to meet our target of net zero emissions by 2025. Replacing systems and infrastructure with more energy efficient alternatives has seen us half the Centre’s energy usage.

October, and the beginning of daylight saving, also aligns with our beach mat

Arts and culture make up a huge part of our City, from events shared, to musicians performing at a local venue, and we all enjoy the vibrancy that it adds to our community. This edition showcases some of the wonderful events to be held in our City over the coming months, from kite boarding to the colourful Diwali festival. While some are rich in tradition, others are about meeting like-minded people, and they all celebrate community. We invite you to check them out.

And if you are a local business, a creative, an artist or arts organisation in our City, now is the time to start thinking about an idea for a grant (see page 5 for the grant to suit you).

Improving the amenity of our City, making it safer for all road and path users and contributing to a green city is our ongoing role. Streetscape upgrades are continuing, in the

Finally, Council elections are just around the corner and are an opportunity for you to vote on who you want to see representing you in your local area at Charles Sturt. You will receive your voting ballot mid-October in the mail and we encourage you to have your say and make your vote count.

CREATING A BEACH ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL

This October the beach mat will again be rolled out, with accessible beach wheelchairs and mobility walkers available for free hire at Henley Beach.

Timed to align with the opening of the surf patrol season, the beach mat provides additional access to our beach and is ideal for wheelchairs, prams and those living with disability.

Earlier this year, we enjoyed a visit to the beach with Suzzanna, Kevin and Joanna from Novita. Joanna gave the mobility walker a big thumbs up as we made our way across the sand using the beach mat.

There are two types of beach wheelchairs, plus the new mobility walkers, available and once you have made your booking, they can be collected from a locker located behind Henley Surf Life Saving Club (morning and afternoon bookings are available).

For more information about our accessible beach visit charlessturt. sa.gov.au/accessiblebeach

(Please note: A MLAK key is available to borrow from Henley Beach or Civic Library and is required to access all hire equipment. A lifter is available at our Changing Places Toilet for transfer if required.)

HOW GRANT FUNDING CAN HELP YOU

Grants are now available to local businesses, artists, arts organisations, musicians, live music venues and residents to apply for funding in the following areas:

• #shoplocal

• Live and Local

• Arts and Cultural Grants Program

• Business Support Program - apply to be waitlisted

Keeping it live and local

We recently funded $2,000 to support the Adelaide Guitar Winter Festival School at The Gov, Hindmarsh. This was part of the Live & Local grant program.

Adelaide Guitar Festival Winter School is a week-long guitar course which provides an opportunity to learn from some of Australia’s finest guitarists in a small, immersive group, that is skills development intensive.

The program sees students of all ages learn from artists such as Joe Camilleri, Chris Finnen, Lucie Thorne and Lecia Louise.

Andrew Dundon, Executive Producer of Adelaide Guitar Festival said they were thrilled to have the opportunity to present their educational program and offer subsidies to City of Charles Sturt residents.

“The support from the City of Charles Sturt and The Governor Hindmarsh was instrumental in making this program a success”, Andrew Dundon said.

Funds for the arts

Additional funding from the City of Charles Sturt enabled Apparent Divide, an exhibition recently held at Praxis ARTSPACE, Bowden, to create a more inclusive exhibition.

An audio description was created for the duration of the show, an AUSLAN tour and artist talk was held, and the Access Event provided accessibility to neurodivergent, deaf, blind and participants with physical access needs.

The grant enabled artist and curator of the exhibition Amber Cronin to work with organisations that are experts in their fields.

“We are lucky in South Australia to have organisations and individuals who are committed to making art experiences more accessible to the broader community. The grant supported us in bringing Access to Arts and DeafCanDo together to enable this exhibition to be as inclusive as possible”, she said.

To find out more and apply visit charlessturt.sa.gov/grants

Due to Council elections, grant funding cannot be approved between 6 September - 14 November.

But we encourage you to plan and submit project ideas for activities commencing after 21 November 2022.

Grants can be a great way to develop and bring to life new ideas, projects and opportunities.

IS YOUR HOME COOL?

AdaptWest is the Western Adelaide climate change adaptation plan that operates across the Cities of West Torrens, Charles Sturt and Port Adelaide Enfield.

BEVERLEY CENTRE IS ELECTRIC

We’re on the path to Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. Our Council buildings play a key role in working towards this goal.

One of the AdaptWest focus areas is to assist residents of Western Adelaide adapt their homes to future climate. By understanding the performance of your home, you can take positive steps to reduce your environmental footprint and make your home more comfortable, as well as making it more energy efficient and saving money by reducing cooling and heating costs.

My Cool Home is a tool developed for you to use to determine the energy efficiency of your existing (or proposed) dwelling. You will get a report on energy use (star rating), estimated bill savings and CO2 produced.

The tool will suggest changes you can make to improve the thermal performance of your dwelling.

For additional resources, you can visit the ‘Our Homes’ page on the AdaptWest website as well as view a 3D house walk-through that provides information on why homes perform the way they do.

Learn more about the measures you can take.

adaptwest.com.au

The Beverley Centre, our second main administration building and home to our Field teams, is leading the way. The Centre is now all electric. Last year, we installed a 50kW solar PV system and transitioned it to an all-electric facility. We replaced old gas heaters in the workshop with energy efficient electric models and repositioned them to provide heat more effectively. We upgraded an old gas hot water heater to an efficient electric heat pump system. Our energy efficiency has improved through LED lighting upgrades in the workshop area. We’ve replaced old and inefficient fridges with a leading 6 star energy rated fridge in the staff kitchens, and replenished insulation to improve effectiveness of our Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system.

These measures have almost halved our annual electricity use at Beverley Centre and reduced

overall consumption by approximately 100,000kWh.

Electrifying our facilities, homes and the transport we use is an important part of our collective climate action. The aim of electrification is to replace technologies that require combustion with alternatives that run on renewable electricity. This is the cheapest, fastest route to reduce emissions. The next time your car, cooktop, hot water heater or space heater is up for replacement, we encourage you to explore all electric options, like we are.

You can learn more about our map to net zero corporate emissions on our website.

Everyday life is improved by the many services your local council provides, including our street lighting, waste and recycling collection, footpaths, playgrounds, local sporting and community facilities, supported services for ageing well and more.

Key decisions about the services, programs and infrastructure we provide are made by the elected group of councillors who serve a four-year term.

The next periodic elections will be held in November this year and you will get an opportunity to vote for the people you want to represent your local area in Charles Sturt.

As councils are part of the democratic framework of Australia, participating in local government elections is one of the most direct ways you can influence decisions that affect your local area.

Your voting pack will include the candidate profiles of who is standing for election in your Ward, a Ward ballot paper and a Mayoral ballot paper. You will be able to vote

CITY PUPDATE

Keep an eye out for our Beach Education patrols as the weather warms up. Our staff are always available for a friendly chat and will be educating our community about appropriate dog and owner behaviour along our coast.

Remember, off-leash rules will change in line with daylight saving from Sunday, 2 October.

Dogs on the beach must be on a lead not exceeding 2m in length between 10am and 8pm, and can be off-lead at other times but must be under effective control.

This is important for the safety of everyone on the beach, other dogs and local wildlife. Keep an eye out for the Hooded Plover nesting sites along our coastline too and follow the directions of our signage as we work to protect these wonderful but vulnerable birds.

Pick it up

Help us keep our City beautiful by carrying a dog poo bag with you when walking your furry friend.

We have over 100 dispensers across our community provided as a ‘courtesy’ service to residents. Please use these dispensers mindfully and only take one or two as needed. Want to be a community champion and volunteer to help refill a dispenser? Call us on 8408 1111 to get involved.

Pet Desexing and Microchipping Program

Have a new furry friend at home? We encourage new dog and cat owners to take advantage of our Pet Desexing and Microchipping Program.

When you desex and microchip your pet, you’re doing yourself, your pet and your community a favour. We

offer financial assistance to help desex and/or microchip your dogs and cats with participating vets.

You’ll find lots of helpful tips and tricks as well as information on our Animal Management programs at charlessturt. sa.gov.au/animalmanagement

KICKING GOALS WITH THE HINDMARSH PRECINCT UPGRADE

Multiple works are underway to improve the connections to the precinct, increase tree canopy cover, provide additional landscaping, develop infrastructure and improve road safety.

Holden Street - running alongside Hindmarsh Stadium from Adam Street adjacent the river to Manton Street

Holden Street will soon experience a full road reconstruction and streetscape upgrade (from Manton Street to Adam Street adjacent the river).

This wide roadway will provide a new streetscape amenity. The intersections will have strategic upgrades with traffic calming devices for road user safety, new concrete footpaths for access, landscaped garden beds and grassed areas.

Milner Street is a key roadway through Hindmarsh and a linkage to the Stadium from West Street over Port Road

The amenity of this streetscape has been improved with new landscaping and were completed first to give the plants time to grow.

Mary Street takes pedestrians from Port Road, near the tram and train, to the Stadium

There will be a new bicycle lane, for safety and to encourage active transport, landscaping and paved areas to improve the street. Mural artwork on the Lightforce building is now complete,

with a mural on the Joiners Arms Hotel building to come. The full works in Mary Street are due to be completed by November 2022, in time for the A-League season at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Crawford Lane, taking pedestrians from Port Road to the Stadium

Following the streetscape upgrade of Crawford Lane in 2019/20, we’ve constructed a raised intersection along the intersection of Orsmond Street to calm traffic flow and make the area more pedestrian friendly.

West Street from Port Road to the train line

West Street now has a paved entranceway from Port Road, with new landscaping featuring trees and shrubs, and a planter box.

East Street

A paved area now rounds out the corner of Port Road and East Terrace in front of the Hindmarsh Library, removing the median island onto Port Road, plus the area has been landscaped with tree plantings.

Funded out of our scheduled budget, this project has been further supported with $1.75 million in funding received by the State Government through the Local Government Infrastructure Partnership Program (LGIPP).

The project is due for completion in February 2023.

For more information, visit charlessturt.sa.gov.au/ hindmarshprecinct

The Hindmarsh Precinct Upgrade is progressing to plan with streetscape works in preparation for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.

TRANSFORMING WOODVILLE ROAD

Power Line Environment Committee (PLEC) works began in late 2020 to underground the powerlines from Norman Street to Port Road. These works were delivered by SA Power Networks and were completed in 2021. The PLEC works included underground power cabling and connection to properties, removal of stobie poles and installation of new LED road lighting. In 2021 SA Water also installed a new water main along Woodville Road in preparation for the streetscape upgrade to commence.

We have been working closely with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport, local residents, businesses and key users of the road since 2019 to shape the final streetscape design and to ensure the design

responds to the diverse range of stakeholders needs.

The current streetscape works includes the upgrade of the street from Port Road to the railway line, including:

• A wider tree lined central median to bring shade and greenery into the street

• Sheltered right turn lanes into side streets to improve road safety and traffic flow

• Improved footpaths and crossing points for pedestrians

• New and improved public lighting

• New verge tree planting and landscaping

• Seating and public artwork

• New Electric Vehicle charging station

Keep up to date with the construction

MEET YOUR HOSTS OF SEASONAL SESSIONS

Since then, this dynamic duo have taken the South Australian arts scene by storm. Zac produced the Adelaide Cabaret Festival working with the likes of Barry Humphries and Kate Ceberano, and Amelia is a critically acclaimed performer and writer, through her production company Amplified Assembly.

Now, they’re bringing their unique blend of creativity, connection, and charisma to Seasonal Sessions; a brand new arts event at the Woodville Town Hall.

‘We really thrive on creating opportunities for both audiences and artists to connect’ says Amelia. ‘Seasonal Sessions is just that - a weekend of music, cabaret and comedy, for local residents to come together over a laugh, a wine, and some great tunes’.

Seasonal Sessions features a diverse, high-quality array of both South Australian and interstate talent, spanning cabaret, music and comedy. So far the program has featured Tripod, Gospo Collective, esteemed writer Clementine Ford, Libby O’Donovan, and Michael Griffiths. November sees local talent Michaela Burger and Mick Harvey joining the bill.

Amelia and Zac have lived on the west side for the better part of five years, with their five year old son Archie, who’ll be starting school locally next year.

‘We’re really passionate about this area, and equally committed to investing our time and energy into making this a vibrant part of the city. To have this beautifully historic venue right here

in our backyard is not something we take for granted, hence the motivation to bring it to life through stories and songs each season!’ said Zac.

Seasonal Sessions is a collaboration between Woodville Town Hall and Amplified Assembly. It’s proudly supported by Live Music Australia.

Local Brompton couple Amelia Ryan and Zac Tyler met in New York City nearly 10 years ago. You could say it was ‘love at first showtune’ and within six weeks Zac convinced Amelia to join him in Adelaide.
