We recognise with excitement our Australia Day Citizen of the Year Awards recipients. Our diverse and culturally rich City is abundant with community members doing extraordinary things

Building a strong and connected community is important to us and we want to know what’s important to you. Help shape the future of our City and guide our decision making. Over the coming months, we will begin to develop a new 4 year Community Plan and we want your involvement. Find out how you can be part of this process on page 10.

In addition, we will be consulting on our Annual Business Plan and Budget in April. This is your opportunity each year to guide our decision making on the work we will complete in 2023/24. 10 FOR $10 IS BACK

Our ever-popular 10 plants for $10 program returns for another year.

LOOK AFTER YOUR ENVIRONMENT

This is the City you live in, the suburb you call home, the parks, reserves and streets you walk and enjoy.

Just like your home, our public spaces are a place for you to spend time in. Give them the care and respect you would your home.

The closest bin may be full. Please try another bin nearby or even better, take your rubbish home with you. Help to keep our parks and reserves tidy and litter free.

Dog waste bags are provided in many of our public spaces if you forget one. Pick up after your dog to keep our spaces clean and safe for others.

The initiative offers residents, schools and businesses the opportunity to purchase 10 locally indigenous plants for just $10 to help green gardens across our City.

These plants are suited to local conditions and will beautify your backyard, help cool your garden, provide food and shelter for native wildlife and spark joy all year round.

Plants, trees and green space all play a vital role in cooling our urban environment and mitigating the effects of climate change. This program is another way that we are working together with our community to green our City now and into the future

and we encourage you to considering including a tree when choosing your plants.

You can get advice about species selection and helpful growing tips from a horticultural expert at one of our two collection days at our Civic Centre on Saturday 1 April and Saturday 3 June or directly from our partnering nursery Provenance Indigenous Plants.

Our library service will also be hosting the “Get Your Garden On” extravaganza featuring amazing presenters to inspire you to become a greening guru. Visit our website for further details charlessturt. sa.gov.au/10for10

Our new plants may be small, this helps them grow and establish to the conditions they live. Walk around the garden beds and leave them be so they can grow big and fill the space.

COMPOSTABLE BAGS FOR YOUR KITCHEN CADDY

It’s your environment after all.

Got your kitchen caddy and needing more bin liners? You can now get them delivered to you.

Simply submit a request to us online and we’ll drop them to you. It’s as easy as that!

If you can’t wait for delivery, you can always pick them up during business hours at any of our libraries or at our Civic Centre. Just bring ID with your City of Charles Sturt residential address.

One roll of bin liners should last you around 6 months.

If you use other bin liners to collect your food waste, please make sure they are labelled “compostable AS 4736”. Only certified compostable bags with this labelling can go in your green bin.

Request delivery of your compostable kitchen caddy bags online now at charlessturt.sa.gov. au/foodwaste

AUSTRALIA DAY CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARDS

In

January we celebrated local community members doing extraordinary things at the 2023 Australia Day Citizen of the Year Awards.

Mayor Angela Evans presented the awards in front of a packed room at Woodville Town Hall. Congratulations to our deserving recipients, all of our nominees and those who nominated. Your support in our community means the world.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD NASIR HUSSAIN

Nasir has been a qualified social worker since 2016 and has used his skills and experience in this field to positively impact the community. Working with and advocating for the multicultural groups within our City, Nasir provides opportunities for our community to feel connected and to have a greater sense of belonging and purpose. He assists new residents to our City in accessing facilities and services that help them feel established and settled in their new home. Nasir works tirelessly to promote and celebrate the many cultures within the City of Charles Sturt.

SENIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD GARY WEST

Gary has been actively involved within the City of Charles Sturt community for many years and is a long-term member of the Rotary Club of West Lakes. He previously held the position of President at the Rotary Club (2011-12 Rotary Year) and in 2012 was recognised by Rotary International by being awarded the Paul Harris Fellow for his outstanding service to the Rotary Club of West Lakes and the Club’s associated projects.

YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD ALISON HANKS

Alison has been a dedicated member of the community for many years now along with being an active member of the St John Ambulance Cadets. Originally part of the St John Ambulance SA Gawler Division, she moved to the Woodville Division where she joined as a Youth Leader and now holds the role of Cadet Leader. Alison was awarded the South Australian Youth Member of the Year Award at the 2022 St John Ambulance SA Awards Day. This award recognised Alison’s efforts not only as a Cadet Leader but her acts of service to the community.

COMMUNITY EVENT OF THE YEAR MY TREE PROJECT

The My Tree Project led by Western Adelaide Coastal Residents Association (WACRA) began in 2021. The idea came from an 11-year-old boy, who loved to read under his mulberry tree and shared an idea with his grandmother to grow trees and link them together via treehouses for each of his friends.

From this project, 450 trees and vegetation have been planted and permanent propagation areas have been established at West Beach Primary and Kilkenny Primary Schools. It has also contributed to our Tree Canopy initiative, reducing greenhouse gases, mitigating the effects of urban heat, and providing shade and habitat for the local wildlife.

In 2008, we embarked on a project to upgrade all our bus stops to meet the requirements of the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport prior to December 2022 (in line with our legislative requirements).

We have upgraded 580 bus stops, with only a handful on Seaview Road remaining where the verges are very steep. These will be upgraded in the coming years.

Our bus stops are now accessible with flat boarding surfaces, tactile ground surface indicators and ramps to reach the bus stop, enabling our community to use public transport safely and easily. The total cost of this initiative was approximately $6 million.

In addition to the upgrades, our community have told us that providing more bus shelters would encourage more people to use public transport.

Supporting sustainable travel is a key action in the City of Charles Sturt’s Transport Plan and Net Zero Strategy in response to climate change.

We’ve listened and from your feedback we have recently entered in a new contract with Claude Outdoor to provide new bus shelters for our community. The partnership provides new shelters at priority stops throughout our City, in exchange for revenue from the advertising panels on new and existing shelters for Claude Outdoor.

New shelter locations will be chosen based on patronage with priority given to warmer areas of our City.

In a staged approach, over the next 4 years you’ll see new shelters installed. We hope they will encourage more of our community to consider public transport as a sustainable method of transport.

Take steps to make your home more energy efficient and climate resilient.

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY CONNECTION

SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS

Our Ageing Well Team supports people aged 65 and over to build friendships and resilience through creating strong community connections.

Our social support programs have changed the lives of many people such as Terry, who regularly volunteers his time to visit Alan in a residential facility. Terry previously visited his Mum in another facility and became aware that many residents did not receive regular visits from family or friends, and decided to volunteer his time with Ageing Well. For Terry, “volunteering is rewarding to both you and the resident.”

Our social program allows Alan to stay connected to the wider community outside the residential facility through Terry’s visits. They enjoy sharing stories and experiences with each other and their similar sense of humour and common interests have allowed the two of them to build a meaningful connection.

Over the years we have connected the community through our social groups; Friendly Visiting Program, Men on the Move, Companion

Animal Project, Fish Feeders, Tai Chi, shopping assistance and buses, and respite services.

This year we want to support new ways of connecting older people together and help to create more meaningful friendships. Whether it’s a book club, a walking group, an art class, an intergenerational playgroup, or a virtual dinner club – we want to hear from you.

Let us know what social group you want to see for our older residents. Contact Hannah on 0417 878 077 or email hcortes@charlessturt.sa.gov. au or Cynthia on 8408 1846.
