MARCH 2024 ISSUE 61

MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Welcome to our first edition for 2024. We are so fortunate to live in a City abundant with parks, reserves, green spaces and natural beauty, and with your support we can help them grow and stay clean and litter free.

Protecting the environment and operating sustainably as a Council remains a key focus for us into the future. We are excited to introduce a new Community Renewables Program with our partners ShineHub which I encourage you to consider to help you save money on energy bills and increase our City’s climate resilience.

Our annual Citizen of the Year Awards is always a highlight. We have so many community members doing extraordinary things in our City and we relish the opportunity to come together and celebrate these achievements. Your contribution to

our City means the world. It also fills us with immense pride to officially welcome our newest citizens to this beautiful place we call home.

It has been an exciting time with key projects reaching significant milestones across our City. The reinvigorated Woodville Road Streetscape was officially opened in February, while Stage 9 of the Grange Lakes Corridor Shared Use Path was completed earlier this year. Construction of our newest community destination at Ngutungka Henley is now also underway and we look forward to sharing progress with you.

The next stage of consultation is now open for our renewed Community Plan. Your feedback is important to shape our community’s future together. I encourage you to please get involved and provide your thoughts on our four flagship initiatives. You can read more on page 3.

Thank you for making our City such a special place.

HELP SHAPE OUR FUTURE

Join our Solar Bulk Buy and be part of our Community Renewables Program.

As a Council we are committed to reducing our carbon emissions, have invested in solar for our facilities and declared a Climate Emergency in 2019.

All of this helps but we have also found a way to support our community to choose renewables as an alternative, further reducing the energy load as well as household budgets.

Partnering with ShineHub, we are excited to offer Charles Sturt residents the chance to be part of our 2024 Solar Bulk Buy, a community renewables program for homes and businesses in our City.

By participating you will be able to access affordable solar and battery solutions that will save you money and be part of our long term vision to establish a local renewable energy network

that powers our community sustainably into the future.

Purchase your solar and batteries through our 2024 Solar Bulk Buy program to save on your power bills. There are no up front costs to get involved.

The next stage will be the establishment of a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), turning it into a community network.

How do I get involved?

We’ll be hosting community information events over the coming months for residents to find out more. Solar experts from ShineHub, our exclusive bulk buy program provider, will be on hand to help you understand the benefits of going solar for your home and help get you get started.

To register visit charlessturt.sa.gov.au and search ‘saving energy’

Be part of the conversation and have your say.

Working alongside schools, community groups, local businesses, nature enthusiasts and cultural groups, we’ve created a Community Plan that reflects our values and aspirations. Our City faces challenges like climate change and population growth, but by working together, we can create a sustainable, safe and vibrant place to call home.

We have identified four flagship initiatives that will be delivered in partnership with our community over the next four years. These initiatives are as follows:

1. Community Renewable Energy Scheme

2. Increasing Our Tree Canopy

3. Central Neighbourhoods Plan

4. Local Centre Revitalisation

Share your thoughts on the new Community Plan and our flagship initiatives and be part of shaping our shared vision.

You can also see a copy of the Draft Community Plan at the Civic Centre, or your local library or community centre.

Having dedicated over two decades of his life to public service, Tolley Wasylenko has been inducted as an Honorary Freeman of the City of Charles Sturt.

Tolley began his local government journey in April 1999, representing the Albert Park – Cheltenham Ward, and continued his role as a dedicated Councillor of the City of Charles Sturt for 23 years.

Born to Ukrainian/Russian parents who immigrated to Australia post-World WarII, Tolley’s background and personal experiences have driven his passion for helping others, and his contributions to the community go beyond his role in local government.

With a job in the Highways Department for 30 years, he also served as a board

member on the West Beach Trust, held leadership positions in Neighbourhood Watch, was a Justice of the Peace, participated in the Charles Sturt Lions Club for 15 years and supported local youth development programs, fundraising for important causes like the The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Cardiologist Unit.

Tolley’s life’s work serves as an enduring reminder of the difference one person can make when driven by a deep sense of compassion and a commitment to serving others.

From the City of Charles Sturt, we say thank you.

Honorary Freeman of the City is an honour given to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to the community, giving their time freely to benefit others. The honour is given to a person who has served the City of Charles Sturt, its community and beyond for many years.

WEEKLY FOGO TRIAL A SUCCESS

Our weekly FOGO trial commenced in May 2023 and involved switching the collection frequency of food and organics (FOGO) bins to weekly and the general waste bin to fortnightly for 1200 households in areas of Seaton and Tennyson.

The mid-term audits results are in, and we have seen some amazing numbers.

Across the two trial areas landfill diversion is sitting at an impressive 68%, which is higher than the City-wide average of 54%.

This increase has been driven by the weekly FOGO households that are achieving a remarkable landfill diversion rate of 78%, compared to households that chose to opt-out of the trial diverting only 47%.

When it comes to food waste the households on our weekly FOGO

schedule are now diverting 61% of their food scraps away from landfill and into the FOGO bin, while households that opted-out of the trial are diverting just 8%.

These results place our weekly FOGO participants amongst the best recyclers in South Australia (second only to Holdfast Bay).

This initiative also improves cost efficiencies by avoiding the State Government’s solid waste levy of $156/tonne, helping us further streamline services for our community.

Well done to all our trial participants on the work you are doing to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

For more information about the trial visit charlessturt.sa.gov.au/weekly-fogo

PROJECT UPDATES

We’re excited to share that we have reached several exciting project milestones across our City.

WOODVILLE ROAD

Woodville Road Streetscape upgrade is complete.

This $8.4 million Woodville Road Streetscape upgrade project has transformed our community with a vibrant and accessible urban space that honours our heritage.

We started this project in September 2022 with the goal of improving traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and overall beautification through green spaces, public art, and smart technology.

Our Mayor, Angela Evans, is thrilled about this project and its reflection of our shared vision for the Woodville precinct. We are also proud to have

collaborated with the First Nations Kaurna Southern Cultural Immersion organisation and local artists to bring the Monana & The Spear artwork to life.

GRANGE LAKES

Stages 1-6 of the Grange Lakes Corridor Shared Use Path is already complete with construction of Stage 9 also recently completed in February 2024.

Consultation for the draft concept design of Stage 7 - Marlborough Street to North Street (through Don Ferguson Memorial Reserve) and Stage 8 North Street to Atkin Street (through Chambers Reserve & Henley and Grange Memorial Reserve) is now finalised.

We are planning to commence construction of Stage 7 in the 2024/25 financial year, and will continue to refine the design and communicate with our community for Stage 8 in readiness for construction in 2025/26.

To be kept updated on the next stage of consultation or to follow the project, visit our community engagement website Your Say Charles Sturt.

CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARDS

We recently celebrated local community members doing extraordinary things at the 2024 Citizen of the Year Awards.

Mayor Angela Evans presented the awards at the ceremony held at Woodville Town Hall.

Congratulations to all of our deserving recipients.

BARRY SHERWELL - 2024 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Locals may know Barry, which isn’t surprising as he is a volunteer at the new Bowden Brompton Repair Café as well as various greening groups and creative public art projects. His biggest venture? Being the founding member of the Ovingham Greening group.

This group has transformed patches of land to increase biodiversity, growing native and water resilient plants and instilling a sense of pride.

DENIS BRIEN - 2024 SENIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Denis has left an indelible mark in local sport from being a player, coach, administrator and sitting on various committees all through 70 years of cricket dedication.

For 15 years, he led the Young Eagles Cricket Academies, producing players in Men’s 1st Class Cricket and the Women’s T20 World Cup. He’s handled all aspects of academies, and has played a huge part in forging women’s cricket in our City. He continues to make a difference as Club President, the club Historian and current Chair of the Life Members Committee.

KYLAN BEECH - 2024 YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

After losing his mother to cancer at 14, Kylan transformed grief into action. In 2019, as a high schooler, he cycled 220km, raising a huge $30,000 for the Cancer Council. Fast forward to 2022, Kylan and his brothers embarked on a 2,220km ride and in total, Kylan’s unwavering commitment has generated over $100,000 for the Cancer Council.

KATS “N” JAMMERS - 2024 COMMUNITY EVENT/ GROUP OF THE YEAR

Volunteers, Andrew and Karen Muir bring the local community together to jam and have fun through developing ukulele skills. Andrew and Karen put a lot of effort into each fortnightly session, and members have shared how impressed they are by the level of professionalism they bring to the group, which has fostered a welcome and fun atmosphere. Members are of all ages, abilities and demographics. Through the group, people develop new skills, friendships, and create a sense of belonging.

Beyond this, Kylan has been a volunteer for the St Vincent de Paul Society, actively involving other youths in combating poverty and homelessness. His recent initiative, ‘Fred’s Mates,’ aims to rally young volunteers to address evolving community needs. Kylan has also been awarded the co-recipient of the state Young Citizen of the Year Award.

PLANTING FOR OUR FUTURE

Our annual Whole Street Tree Planting program is all about greening, cooling and improving your neighbourhood.

You might see our employees out digging holes and planting trees in streets between April – June as part of our 2024 program.

We have prioritised 26 streets and 18 tree species for planting across a variety of suburbs. Species options were selected to suit the specific growing conditions and characteristics of each street.

This is important work as trees are vital for the future of our City. They help shade and beautify our environment, clean the air and provide natural public amenity for our community.

But large, established trees need time to grow and mature. They also require ongoing care and maintenance to thrive and provide the biggest benefit to the environment and our community over their entire lifespan.

It’s part of our commitment to nurture a healthy, diverse and sustainable urban forest and to reach a City-wide tree canopy target of 25% by 2045 as outlined in our Tree Canopy Improvement Strategy.

Please keep this in mind if you see our employees out and about planting trees over the coming months. Together, we can build a greener, cooler and tree-rific future for our City.

Visit our website to learn more about our Whole Street Planting Program, including the streets and tree species selected for planting over the coming months. Also keep an eye out for further updates about the 2024/25 planting program commencing in July.

TREEBATE – TREE REBATE SCHEME

Who said money doesn’t grow on trees?

Buy and plant a tree on your property and we’ll ‘treebate’ 50% of the purchase price.

That’s a sweet deal and an easy way we can work together to reach our tree canopy target, cool our City and help the environment.

You can apply for a rebate for up to 3 trees per residential property or up to 10 trees for schools, strata groups and businesses up to a maximum rebate of $50 per tree.

Conditions apply.

Let us know before 31 May and we could include it in the next edition of Kaleidoscope, landing in letterboxes in March. Your community group, event or not-for-profit organisation must be located in the City of Charles Sturt.

Email us with the subject “Kaleidoscope Community Noticeboard” to publications@charlessturt.sa.gov.au
