CEU’s are available for all classes except the nursery tour and How to Hire an Arborist.
Knowing how and when to prune for fruit is much different than pruning an ornamental tree. If you have a fruit tree, this is the class for you!
Hiring an arborist can be difficult if you do not know the right questions to ask. Learn key terms that will help you navigate arborist qualifications, ask the right questions and understand estimates.
LAURA MOORE CUNNINGHAM CITY ARBORETUM TOUR
Come tour the nursery and see where the city grows its trees. We will look at basic nursery production, discuss species identification and learn about characteristics of small trees. We’ll walk to Kristin Armstrong Municipal Park and look at mature specimens. We will walk on uneven surfaces which may be dusty or muddy depending on the spring weather. Please wear appropriate footwear.
Get the dirt on soil and plant interactions. Learn the basics of caring for the soil as well as basic plant structures. You’ll walk away with a growing understanding on how to manage soil and proper tree care for healthier, longer living trees.

Learn about insects and diseases that affect our trees and the most common problems people create by incorrect practices. Learn to identify problems and get suggestions on how to correct them.
This class addresses more than just cutting off branches. Incorrect pruning can cause serious problems for your trees. Learn the correct way to make a pruning cut, the tree’s response to the cuts and how to prune for the long-term health and beauty of your trees.
Planting incorrectly is one of the most common reasons for tree failure. Unfortunately, sometimes the problem isn’t evident for 10 or more years. Once you’ve chosen the perfect tree for your area, learn the correct way to plant (or what to look for when someone else plants) to ensure the tree’s long-term success.

Birds are found in nearly every city setting, from urban micro parks to the sprawling foothills that border our northeastern edge. Birds visit backyard feeders, perch in low shrubs and on tall structures, swim in our river, lakes and ponds, nest in our trees and soar overhead. A variety of Boise’s habitats attract and support hundreds of species, and we invite you to explore some of the area’s most common birds.
The Field Guide to Boise’s Birds is available for free online. Printed versions can be purchased at the Boise Parks and Recreation Administration Office for $8 plus tax.

COTTONWOOD CREW, Tuesday Mornings, November – March, 9-11AM
The Boise River riparian corridor provides critical habitat for a wide range of species including Bald Eagles. Black cottonwoods and
willows are critical components of this habitat and unfortunately are also a favorite food and construction resource for the American Beaver. Boise Parks and Recreation manages approximately 25 miles of riparian habitat and could use your help in protecting trees from beaver damage by wrapping them with welded wire.
For more information on these and other volunteer programs with the Boise Parks and Recreation Department, please contact: Jerry Pugh Community Volunteer Coordinator

Tuesday Mornings; 9-11AM
Due to multiple factors, pollinator populations across the globe have declined drastically, with some species declining up to 90%. To help, Boise Parks and Recreation is working to provide high quality pollinator habitat by planting, monitoring and maintaining dedicated pollinator areas in Boise Parks. To help us care for these areas, we work with a great group of pollinator champions who are part of our Pollinator Posse, and we would like to invite you to be part of the team! Beginning in late March, weekly garden parties are on Tuesday mornings from 9-11AM. Participants plant new pollinator plants, prune and thin out existing plants, add ground cover to planting beds, remove weeds and monitor for pollinator use.
Thursday Mornings; 9-11AM
Do you have a love for trees or simply want to learn more about them? Boise Parks and
Recreation is currently seeking participants for its 2026 Tree Steward program. The Tree Steward program provides an opportunity for citizens to learn about and care for our community's trees through a combination of training and hands-on experience. Participants will receive an orientation, where trained and certified tree care professionals inform participants on how to identify trees, how trees grow, proper planting techniques, pruning basics and how to diagnose common tree problems. Participants then help care for park trees on Thursday mornings through October. Participants that complete 30 hours of service during the year become certified Tree Stewards.
The rose garden has always been a labor of love by and for the people of Boise, and you can help continue that tradition by volunteering to care for this beautiful garden. Since 1935, the Julia Davis Rose Garden has attracted
gardeners of varying expertise who share one thing in common – a passion for roses. Beginning April 3, 2026, weekly work sessions will be held Friday mornings from 8-11AM. You don’t need a green thumb to be a Julia Davis Rose Garden volunteer. Our professional staff will provide direction and training for anyone who is interested in lending a hand.
Calling all nature enthusiasts! Join the effort to document the wonderful diversity of wild things in our parks and open spaces by participating in the 2026 City Nature Challenge. Between April 24 and 27, participants in approximately 350 cities across the globe will document biodiversity in their communities using the free iNaturalist app. In Boise, volunteers are encouraged to visit their favorite park, trail or open space to collect data.
