Natalie, also known as “Boob-one-ic Plague” or “Boobs” for short (because everyone in roller derby has a name to match their personality), is on a mission to not only live the life she wants, but to regain her fitness and shed some of the weight involuntarily gained after years of treatment.

The well-researched link between the production of oestrogen and weight gain and breast cancer concerns Natalie after her own weight gain from treatments. The other concern is research and a cure for metastasised cancer or “mets” as she refers to it.

The discovery of tumours on Natalie’s brain came mid 2018, just four months after the completion of a year of target treatment following on from six months of chemotherapy, radiation and a mastectomy after a diagnosis of breast cancer in June 2016.

Natalie believes her initial breast cancer diagnosis could have been detected earlier.

The annual event that is held throughout the country celebrates the lives of people touched by breast cancer and includes a 5km run or walk or a 10km run as well as a range of food and fun activities for families to enjoy.

“Mother’s Day Classic is not about breaking speed records. We are all about delivering a fun and inspirational community event that involves celebrating and supporting those touched by this disease,” says MDC Foundation CEO Sharon Morris.

“Our focus is on participation, whether you walk, run, donate or volunteer. It’s a fun morning, with many dressing up: you’ll see everything from pink stormtroopers to teams in fairy wings and dads in tutus,” says Sharon.

This year’s goal is to reach $2.1m for life-saving breast cancer research.

NOW we Canberrans have finally “come of age” with the delivery of one of the best “truly integrated transport systems” money can buy, what next?

Federal candidates on parade

IMAGINE this. You have bought a home and paid extra for views of the hills and to be opposite a quiet park alongside a pond with bird life and other animals.

Sounds good. But what if the government decides it needs to make up for its lack of provision of amenities in the area by plonking a supersized activity centre on that peaceful parkland?

It’s happening in Coombs. Earlier this year, the government announced the building of a large playspace on Edgeworth Parade alongside the Holdens Creek Pond. To the rest of the city, this sounded great. It was also unusual, as this government is not known for its initiatives on community facilities (ask the people in Woden and Dickson).

Although the site remains on the plans as a small local park, it is a bare patch as the government has reneged on its commitment to have the park completed by summer, 2017.

Then to make matters worse, the government carried out one of its infamous “Have-Your-Say” surveys structured to deliver skewed results.

The results were generally positive to the questions as they were asked.

The local school provided a long list of its desired facilities, most of which should have come with the school or have been made available across the suburb.

The government is refusing to talk to the residents, who have bluntly been told that the plonking on this quiet suburban site of a major play activities park is non-negotiable.

It is these questionable survey results that are used to justify overriding of the serious concerns of the residents most affected – those who live nearby and paid the extra to do so. The residents agree that these facilities are needed and are overdue.

Just that this parkland space on Edgeworth Parade was not meant to be this massive centre of activity.

The government is refusing to talk to the residents and address their issues. They have been told in very blunt terms – that the plonking on this quiet suburban site of this major play activities park is non-negotiable.

That’s an interesting take on the government mantra of putting “people first”. Part of the reasoning is that there was overwhelming support for this large activity centre.

This claim is based on two things.

One is the inappropriate survey. The other is more disingenuous. Once the plans had been finalised with no community consultations, residents were given a couple of hours to meet with the designers – not to have their issues discussed but to be informed of what

was about to land on their doorstep.

That’s what this government now says is the extensive consultations.

You have to sympathise with the Coombs residents. Planning has worked against them ever since a certain planning minister put in place inappropriate and anti-residents’ planning processes for this suburb.

That, of course, was Andrew Barr, now chief minister, who has continued to deliver planning travesties across the city along with “people-last” initiatives such as what has been happening in Coombs.

The minister directly responsible today for this shameful planning shambles is Yvette Berry, the Minister for Suburban Development. It is her office that has the reputation for not being kind to residents who have alternative views to what has been sold by the bureaucracy to the minister.

What’s the way forward? The

community and sports facilities proposed are definitely needed in the area but should not be located on this particular site. If they are to be on one site, this level of major play centre requires an easily accessible site (not one with narrow roads), needs to have generous parking (not the 15 or so allocated) and needs to be not immediately near to houses.

There’s the opportunity to work with residents to deliver to this suburb appropriately placed community and sports activity centres as well as to deliver on some of the other overdue facilities (shops, art centre, etcetera).

It is time – and overdue - for Yvette Berry and her office to show some humanity and be nice to the people of Coombs.

Revealed: life of flaxen-haired Charlotte Faunce ACCLAIMED artist Jiawei Shen is widely known for his portrait of the Princess of Denmark, Mary (formerly of Hobart).

He has also painted a woman worthy of the title of “Princess of Canberra” and, for the first time, it will be on public display at the Queanbeyan Art Society following a launch on May 4.

A young, flaxen-haired Charlotte Faunce stands poised in a golden dress trimmed with delicate black lace, reading from a leather-bound book. Her eyes are downcast, her expression contemplative.

Born almost two centuries ago, Charlotte may well be ruminating on a life that encapsulates the story of the wider Canberra region: almost from the moment of European arrival, through many of its significant developments, and the enduring connection of some of the most recognised family names in the area.

The work is a prized possession of a family descendant, 89-year-old Peter Ryrie.

“I commissioned it in 1991 and it’s taken from a photo,” says Peter.

“Shen is a personal friend of mine, known for his large-scale historic pieces in major public collections and as a leading portrait artist, and I knew he was perfect to paint Aunt Charlotte.”

Tasker Faunce and his wife, Elizabeth (both the offspring of generals), Charlotte’s life was one of firsts.

A “Currency Lass” – the first generations born to the newly arrived – Charlotte’s place of birth was near Campbelltown, at the property of Charles Throsby, one of the explorers to happen upon the Limestone Plains in 1820.

In 1837, when she was just over a year old, Capt Faunce was appointed first police magistrate for the huge

Land District of Queanbeyan, taking in the area that, in 1913, would become the modern-day capital.

The Queanbeyan township itself would only officially be declared the following year and until the arrival of Mrs Faunce – considered a “civilising influence” – apparently with only one other woman in residence among a population of 40 to 50 men.

The family estate, “Dodsworth”, home to the town’s first hospital, makeshift courthouse and lock-up, was situated close to the eastern bank of the Queanbeyan River (today, essentially the location of the Queanbeyan Golf Course).

When Charlotte was 19, her muchrespected 48-year-old father died while playing in a cricket match, a game he helped introduce to the area.

Two years later, in 1858, she was involved in the opening of one of the region’s most critical pieces of infrastructure – the graceful timberspan bridge across the Queanbeyan River, the first despite 30 years of locals somehow making do without.

Charlotte would have the honour of christening it (with duly smashed bottle of wine) “The Queen’s Bridge”, and for which she received “three hearty cheers.”

With the arrival of the likes of the cultured Faunces, Queanbeyan (pop. then around 600) had become the hub of social activity for the district and the place where the primary families

of the area would meet.

Charlotte and her sister, Ellen, would marry into the Ryries, graziers with holdings throughout the Monaro.

Charlotte’s betrothed, Alexander, was the first Australian-born son of Stewart Ryrie Snr’s second marriage to Isabella Cassels following the death of his first wife, Anne. Their home became the still existing “Arnprior” at Braidwood.

On Alex and Charlotte’s union in 1860 – the ceremony conducted by her younger brother, reverend AD Faunce – the couple moved to the newly acquired 35,000-acre property, Micalago Station. Named to differentiate it from the nearby though still remote township, Michelago, it remains within the family.

Twenty years on, Charlotte was the wife of a politician – Alex becoming Member for Braidwood in the NSW Legislative Assembly, later elected to the Legislative Council.

Just like her own mother, Charlotte would have nine children – seven sons and two daughters. One, named for his grandfather, Tasker, would pass away when only five months old.

Another would become one of Australia’s most distinguished soldierdiplomats: Maj-Gen Sir Granville de

Laune Ryrie KCMG, CB, VD. Having served in the Boer War, he followed in his father’s footsteps, elected Member for Queanbeyan in 1906. He fought in World War I and was wounded twice at Gallipoli. After the war, he became high commissioner to London.

Keeping the home-fires burning, Charlotte would outlive Alex by four years. She died on February 25, 1913 at 77 – only a matter of weeks before the new nation’s capital officially came into being. She’d also witnessed the jubilee of the Queanbeyan Bridge (by 1908, rebuilt twice), recognised for the “distinguished part” she’d played 50 years earlier.

Charlotte was laid to rest beside her husband in the Michelago Cemetery.

They would later be joined by their famous son, Granville, who was afforded a burial with full military honours.

The portrait of Charlotte will be unveiled at 2.30pm, Saturday, May 4, at the Queanbeyan Art Society. It will be available for viewing over the next month.

Let’s loosen up sport and enjoy it again!

MEIKLE WHILE never a sporty girl, I was great at participation; I gave everything a go especially in primary and early high school years, from ballroom dancing to badminton.

I enjoyed trying out new sports and activities in the hope I would be successful at one of them. Turned out I wasn’t!

Sport got harder in the later years of high school.

The competition aspect and expectation that you had to be good at sports increased and that’s where it took the fun out of it for me.

Sport got serious. Great for those seeking the thrill and challenge of competition but not so much for me when I just wanted to have fun.

School sport was tortuous – cross-country running in the depth of winter mornings when the sports teachers drove along calling: “Run faster, girls!” from a minivan, collecting injured runners along the way, felt like a cop out. I certainly didn’t learn any particular skills apart from a passionate hatred of running. It took a long time before I gave jogging a go and I actually don’t mind it. I now know there’s a lot to understand about the sport science of running with training and techniques to do it correctly and enjoyably. That would have been good to learn.

I hope there’s more to offer today’s young women to keep them engaged in sport.

But it’s staggering that even today’s high school girls have a significant decrease in physical activity, compared to boys. Less than 10 per cent of female high-school students in Canberra are meeting Australia’s physical activity guidelines.

ACT government programs such as “Girls: It’s Your Move” support high schools to take a holistic approach to engage students and increase girls’ participation in physical activity. And, of course, the recent rise of women’s elite sport will continue to inspire and motivate more girls to keep going into early adult-

hood and beyond. But work clearly still needs to be done.

Now I am a mum, I want my kids to try out and enjoy as wide a range of sport and active activities we can afford and schedule.

My best friend and I recently spent a blissful morning’s play date with our four children and for those seeking a definition of a blissful play date is one where the children don’t fight, cry or hurt themselves, where the parents can sit, chat and take a little break from the constant demands of motherhood, while the children enjoy imaginative play and build their own little friendships.

It was one of those special times where we had almost run out of things to say to each other as our kids were playing so beautifully together. One of the things we chatted about was different football classes we had signed the children up for, on the advice of a kindergarten expert who said that children who were confident and able to play ballsports make friends during lunchtimes and help ease the transition into “big” school.

The penny dropped for me that our default setting was to let the dads or others to do sports with the kids. We decided that wasn’t right. So, in addition to the classes, we resolved to get the soccer balls out of the garage and at our next play date the mums will kick the ball around with the kids at the park.

So mums, let’s not sit back!

I don’t expect or particularly desire my kids to become elite or professional sportspeople – rather I would prefer them to get pleasure from lots of different sports played together, with their friends and their parents, too.

But that means that I have to model this for them. They need to see their mum take time for my active health needs, see my face sweaty and red from exercise, and experience what a laugh it is when mum kicks the ball with them. And believe me, they will laugh!

Use your vote to tell them Canberra counts FEDERALLY, the major parties have only a minor interest in Canberra.

The ACT’s Federal election results have always been a lay down misère with the 2019 election expected to deliver three House of Representatives seats to Labor with a Liberal and a Labor candidate in the Senate.

No wonder Canberra is taken for granted!

Canberrans can send a message. By minimising the first-preference votes going to the two major parties the message will be that the ACT needs to be taken seriously.

The Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition are busy pork-barrelling promises to marginal electorates around Australia while the three seats and senators for the ACT are of little consequence.

While traditional media electioneering focuses on the leaders of the two main parties, local candidates scramble for attention with roadside posters, appearances in shopping centres, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

The ACT seats of Canberra, Bean and Fenner are now up for grabs. The single incumbent, Labor’s Andrew Leigh, is standing in Fenner. Most candidates wisely prefer an electorate without someone who has such a high profile and has performed as well as Leigh. Leanne Castley, of the

Liberals, and Andrew Braddock, of the Greens, have at best a tiny, outside chance.

For the ACT to gain influence and to be taken seriously, the prime focus needs to be on the Senate and on the other two seats.

The seat of Canberra is up for grabs. It is also time to get beyond the “professional politician”. Labor preselected Alicia Payne, a former staffer of Lindsay Tanner, Bill Shorten and Jenny Macklin. The Liberals have no chance. Tim Bohm is the only independent running in the seat. He seeks to undermine profes-

sional politicians by limiting them to a maximum of three terms. He is running an extensive and targeted social media campaign along with the usual banners and occasional media appearances. Bohm could be Canberra’s Cathy McGowan in Indi or Kerryn Phelps in Wentworth.

There is no incumbent in the seat of Bean which largely covers Tuggeranong and Woden south of Hindmarsh Drive. However, this seat also has an interesting independent candidate. Dr Jamie Christie is an emergency physician who has worked as a salaried specialist in the Canberra Hospital

for decades. His family has been in Canberra since 1927. The Labor Party has manoeuvred their temporary senator, political adviser and former unionist, David Smith, into the seat to allow Katy Gallagher back into the Senate.

With former Chief Minister and popular senator Katy Gallagher running, Labor is unassailable in the Senate. This leaves one seat open to challenge. For the first time in many years the Liberals are looking somewhat vulnerable. Unlike former senators Gary Humphries and Margaret Reid, the Liberal Party is no longer represented by a reasonably progressive senator.

The campaign being run by the unions against the very conservative Zed Seselja highlights his strident support for Peter Dutton and other issues illustrate he is out of step with the high proportion of socially progressive Canberrans. These people, along with disenchanted Liberal voters, do have alternatives.

Independents Anthony Pesec and Gary Kent have grouped (as Group B) on the senate voting paper. Anthony Pesec, a former investment banker and civil engineer, is running a very

public and effective campaign. Pesec featured in “CityNews” on March 28 and the digital version is easily found on the paper’s website. Gary Kent was once the president of the ACT Liberals and is one of those disenchanted Liberal voters mentioned above.

Both present credible alternatives for centralist voters.

Canberra does not have to be dismissed and marginalised as being irrelevant. The way to really gain the attention of either major political party is to provide them with a reason to take the ACT seriously. This can be achieved if voters, at the very least, choose an independent or other cross-bench candidate before placing their next vote against their preferred major party.

Jon Stanhope felt Jim’s comments deserved a reply: “While I accept that the government has been less than transparent about light rail costings and it is hard to work out what is going on, it is clear, contrary to your suggestion, that many millions of dollars have been expended by it on the project to date. Take, for example, wages and

“It is, of course, naive to think that the PPP will deliver anything for free. Capital and interest costs, operating costs and even costs in relation to delays in construction will almost certainly be met by the taxpayer. It is standard practice in PPPs and other major contracts where a private-sector partner is expected to absorb the cost of risk for that cost to be priced into the contract. I will be amazed if our PPP partners, out of the goodness of their hearts, have not done that in this case.

“For a more complete but albeit still limited understanding of the costs of light rail it is also worth having a look at the auditor-general’s report where a range of works and costs not included in the PPP are detailed. “A major gap in the information available to the community was the cost of

relocating utilities (reported in ‘The Canberra Times’ in 2013 as possibly being as much as $200 million) and whether any of that cost is funded through the PPP. “The light rail business case at page 81 also identifies a range of costs related to the project that were not included in its costings.

“One thing that is certain is that, as a consequence of not funding for growth in demand, very heavy cuts have been made to the health budget, to the tune over the last few years, of hundreds of millions of dollars.

“It may, of course, be purely coincidental that these have been made at a time when the government has committed to funding a priority transport project requiring funding of an order similar to the amount of the cuts to health.”

Stanhope for chief minister!

WHAT the hell is Jon Stanhope doing writing opinion pieces for “CityNews”?

Reading his column each week, I am convinced he shouldn’t be a magazine columnist – but chief minister! Yes, chief minister for another 10 years.

His April 18 column (“Health goes short as the tram mandate is met”) says it all. He writes with a lot of experience and has a practical approach to solving territory problems.

Let us hope his political career is resurrected at the next ACT Legislative Assembly election.

Makes sense for women

at least some young women do think and act proactively about their safety.

I AM an elderly woman of 75 and want to say how interested I was to read Kate Meikle’s column “Do men know how scared we are of them?” (CN, April 18).

Today women seem to be endlessly asserting their physical prowess – and one admires their energy and drive.

But the fact remains that MOST men are bigger, heavier, and stronger than MOST women; so even gentle men can easily appear threatening.

And sometimes a strongly bonded group of young women can be pretty scary, too.

So it makes sense for women to use their brains to avoid being in undesirable situations. That may seem like a burden for women only: but there are many slight, weak or old men who have to protect themselves also.

However, I don’t think women (or men) should feel fearful and threatened because they need to use their brains. Rather, I think they should feel a sense of pride that they CAN look after their interests in this way.

And they should be encouraged to talk with each other about how they can successfully handle challenging circumstances.

Kate makes a good point that kind men should be sensitive to women feeling uncomfortable.

He particularly encouraged Downer residents to embrace having their surroundings take on the appearance of Braddon’s increasing medium and high-rise urban intensification.

Hopefully, as a servant of the public after June, this influential, new appointee will anticipate and address planning impacts and associated infrastructure issues from a well-balanced and informed “people”, rather than a narrow property, perspective.

Law Week puts focus on protecting your rights FROM Monday, May 13 to Saturday, May 18, the legal community will come together for the biggest event on the Canberra legal calendar.

Every year the week is run by the ACT Law Society, and president Chris Donohue says it’s an opportunity to focus on lawyers and the law, raise public awareness of what lawyers do and raise awareness on how the ACT Law Society supports the community.

This year the ACT Law Society has chosen the theme: “Lawyers: Protecting Your Rights”.

Chris says ACT Law Society takes its community role very seriously.

“We are active in lobbying for good law in the ACT, scrutinising legislation for the benefit of the people of Canberra,” he says.

“It is our firm belief that legislation should fairly balance the principal forces in society, and where possible, look after minority interests.

“Most recently, we have been very vocal about the shocking way the Barr government is siding with insurance companies to stop injured Canberrans getting fair compensation, through the ill-advised ‘Motor Accident Injuries Bill 2019’.”

Law Week also offers a week of free and ticketed events to the public.

Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay will launch the week at the ACT Golden Gavel speaking competition at 5.30pm on Monday, May 13. This ticketed event will test the public speaking skills of some of Canberra’s most erudite young lawyers.

There will be a free legal referral service at the ACT Law Society from 12.30pm to 2pm, Monday to Thursday, and a free wills advice clinic from 11am to 2pm on Friday.

“These services are extremely important for members of the public who feel daunted by the law and need assistance or advice on where to go next,” Chris says.

There will also be free Supreme Court tours on Monday and Thursday, as well as the 34th annual Blackburn Lecture, at 12.30pm, Tuesday, May 14.

Entry is by gold coin donation.

Karen Fryar, the first woman appointed to the judiciary in the ACT, will be delivering the lecture, which will be on the topic of pro bono and who it benefits.

At 12.30pm on Wednesday, May 15 the ACT Human Rights Commission will host the ticketed event “Here, There and Everywhere – human rights developments locally and nationally”. At the event a panel of local human rights experts such as Dr Helen Watchirs will discuss the practical experiences of applying human rights in ACT proceedings.

Then, from 6.30pm, the ticketed Annual Law Week Dinner will feature special guest Azmeena Hussain, who is a principal at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers and social justice advocate.

This law week, the ACT Law Society will also be raising money for the Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS).

“The DVCS is a charity I’ve supported for many years,” Chris says.

MUSA AT least since 1975, when Peter Weir’s film version of “Picnic at Hanging Rock” hit our screens, socalled “Picnic” tourists have been annoying locals at Mt Macedon in rural Victoria by climbing atop the famous rock and shouting, ”Miranda, Miranda!”

She’s the most beautiful of the three schoolgirls who vanish into the rock in Joan Lindsay’s 1967 fictional mystery.

Miranda is “like a Botticelli angel”, and like her mathematics teacher Miss McCraw and her schoolmate Marion, she is never found.

It’s been called an “Australian horror romance” and now the National University Theatre Society is putting it on stage in an adaptation by playwright Tom Wright, first seen at Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre in 2016 and then in Edinburgh during 2017.

Artistic director of NUTS, Claire Holland, sees the mythic tale as “nightmarish Australian gothic” and “an eerie contemplation on female adolescence within the Australian bush”.

Staged back-to-back with the company’s physical theatre version of “Peter Pan”, the

NUTS production is directed by second-year English student Matilda Hatcher, who joined

the society last year backstage, but all hands are on deck as they grapple with the theatre space in the New Kambri cultural centre on campus.

“It’s not 100 per cent what we envisage as a place to work, but that’s not Kambri’s fault,” she says of the new drama space.

“In the bureaucratic process there was a lack of understanding as to what the theatre community needed, but at least we have a black box and seating – the A/V elements could certainly be enhanced.”

As she approaches “Picnic”, Hatcher has jumped straight into surrealism, sometimes using walks from the Japanese Butoh style, sometimes masks, always following the precepts of French director Antonin Artaud, who once advised: “Real theatrical experience shakes the calm of the senses, liberates the compressed unconscious and drives towards a kind of potential revolt”.

In doing so, she believes, they have created “a tale of missing children and the horrors that lurk at the corners of our imagination”.

Five female performers will play five present-day Melbourne schoolgirls struggling with their own suppressed erotic power and the need to solve the mystery of the missing girls and their teacher.

In Wright’s chiller-thriller of a script, the potential for history to repeat itself becomes very real as they take on the role of

the missing girls, the headmistress Mrs Appleyard; Albert, the lower-class coachman; the upper-class Michael Fitzhubert and all the other roles. Everybody plays at least two or three characters.

“Tom Wright’s adaptation uses lyrical language, not the kind Melbourne schoolgirls would use today,” Holland notes.

“But it gives us room to craft our own interpretation.”

In his script, the present-day schoolgirls revisit the past, with time jumps often indicated in contrasting modern and historical dress.

“We have explored the idea of both being in the past and having the modern girls still feel the experience today… it’s really interesting how the performance develops in unexpected ways, nothing is safe,” Holland says.

As director, Hatcher has deliberately played up the horror side, “to electrify the story… to make audiences feel uncomfortable, to put them on the edge.”

“It’s eerie, quite eerie but there’s a frenetic energy that comes out of nowhere,” she says.

It will “terrify the pants off you”, one UK critic wrote.

It’s when timing is everything “The Hummingbird Project” (M) “THE Hummingbird Project” falls into the category of sci-fi adventure. That may surprise moviegoers who expect films thus categorised to tell stories about creatures from other planets invading earth.

Canadian writer/director Kim Nguyen’s film won’t excite ornithologists or other bird watchers, but one of them must have done the work to establish how long it takes for a hummingbird to beat its wings just once.

The scientific evidence varies but there appears to be general agreement that the frequency is around 70 beats per second, which approximates 14 to 15 milliseconds per beat. And that information underlies the film’s plot.

Vincent Zaleski (Jesse Eisenberg) is a brash hustler in the IT world, working for the firm controlled

by Eva (Salma Hayek). He’s inventive, forceful, ever looking for the main chance that will make him very rich. She ruthlessly protects her company’s intellectual property principally comprising algorithms to improve her clients’ business practices. Her mantra is success at any cost. Her style is savagely uncompromising.

Vincent’s cousin Anton (Alexander Skarsgård) is a different kettle of fish. Where Vincent is the go-getter, Anton is shy, retiring, afraid of shadows, an unsung genius when it comes to developing algorithms and writing the code to implement them.

The plot of “The Hummingbird Project” is Vinnie’s plan to make big money by closing a deal in the market faster than anybody else. The action may be in Kansas but the market is in New York. Vinnie’s plan is to run a cable between those two centres that will carry market trades faster than any other communications hardware. This generates two problems. The physical one is running a cable in an absolutely straight line between the two cities. The intellectual one is writing software that will beat other traders by sending details of trades along the line in both directions in 16 milliseconds. That way lies big money.

Vinnie’s plan is business at its most aggressive.

And it makes for a strong movie. The ups and downs of both of its dramatic threads are not difficult to follow. The principal cast delivers the tensions with vigour. The supporting cast is convincing. The ebb and flow of events

On the debit side, those with the necessary wit and perception may note occasional minor bloopers that don’t get in the way of telling the story.

“The Chaperone” (M) THE screenplay for “The Chaperone” telling how 16-year-old Louise Brooks shed the shackles of middle-class life in Wichita, Kansas, in 1922 to become a member of a modern dance company and later the star of 17 silent and eight sound films between 1925 and 1938, is the work of Julian Fellowes.

It’s subtle, clever writing, drawing on a book

by Laura Moriarty telling about Louise’s career that began when in 1922 she was offered a place at the New York school of modern dance conducted by Ruth St Dennis (Miranda Otto) and Ted Shawn (Robert Fairchild). Director Michael Engler’s debut feature film (after a distinguished career in TV series and telemovies) begins at that point. Louise’s mother was reluctant to send her daughter so far at age 16 without a chaperone.

And that, more than the events in Louise’s life, is

the seed from which the film grows.

Elizabeth McGovern plays Norma Carlisle, wife of a Wichita lawyer, mother in her early 40s of two adult sons, who volunteered to chaperone the teenager in the big city.

The subtleties of the raw materials that Fellowes provided give McGovern the wherewithal to deliver a strong emotional current of charm and verity.

The unremarkable woman who actually went with Louise (that Louise went to New York with that chaperone is fact) is replaced by a woman whom the film slowly develops into somebody whose real objective was to find her own identity. Norma’s search has occupied her adult life. The key to unlocking its mysteries lies with the handyman in a New York orphanage run by Catholic nuns.

While Norma is genuinely fond of Louise, Louise has other fish to fry. Haley Lu Richardson plays her deftly. Her dance movements are a delight to watch.

Depicting a child wise beyond her years suddenly turned loose in the figurative candy store, her maturity in fulfilling her womanly yearnings is convincing.

‘Milk’ among the cream of Street’s plays

FOR eight years The Street Theatre has been running a dramaturgical project called “First Seen”.

A way of creating original performance work and encouraging debate on issues and relationships central to Canberrans’ lives, quite often the works “first seen” go on to be staged

by The Street and notable success included director/playwright David Atfield’s play “Scandalous Boy”.

This year Atfield turns dramaturg.

He’s been charged by The Street with selecting four plays for workshop, drawn from 14 script submissions.

“People can send almost any sort of script, so there are plays at several different levels of development… I’ve selected three and also a fourth play, which is virtually ready to go.”

Yes, but Emily didn’t have to dig the bluebells up!

WRITER Emily Bronte wrote of the common bluebell that “a fine and subtle spirit dwells in every flower”.

While readily available here, a word of warning; the English bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) spreads like wildfire and could be a menace for the small garden.

It has taken me two years of constantly digging up bulbs as soon as they appear... and still they come.

For the large garden with shady areas this is not a problem and can present a magnificent carpet of waving blue flowers.

Many visitors to the now-sold Kennerton Green gardens in Mittagong may recall seeing the silver birch wood underplanted with bluebells.

GARDEN centres are awash with the wonderful Cyclamen persica, a favourite flower of florists. Sold mainly potted as an indoor plant, most people throw them out after flowering. However, by planting it in a shady spot in the garden under, say, a deciduous tree, it will die down in summer, only to reappear at this time.

The photo of cyclamen in a hanging basket is in our garden that’s now at least 10 years old. It’s in flower and has never been repotted. We’ve fed it regularly in the growing season with organic Maxicrop

ONE last word on this lovely plant, I must mention a beautiful dwarf soft pink variety growing to less than 10cm high is Cyclamen hederifolium. From the seemingly bare earth and through the mulch, the tiny petals appear before the leaves. As the flowers die down, the ivy-like leaves with a marbled effect appear to provide a solid ground cover until they finally disappear in mid-winter until autumn next year; nature is truly amazing!

FOR a complete contrast in colour and texture at this time of year is Anemone hupehensis x japonica or Japanese windflower.

Despite the common name, it originates in China.

Initially recorded by Swedish naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828), the plant was first introduced into England by plant hunter Robert Fortune, who sent specimens to the Horticultural Society of London in 1844. Despite this, it doesn’t appear in cultivation in China today. The delicate pink and white flowers, on tall stalks up to 40cm tall, wave enticingly in the wind.

to get rid of. However, it is only a problem if you let it be one; I simply pull the excess plants out, roots and all, after flowering.

BUILDING blocks have become progressively smaller to the extent that today many people find it easier to trot along to a farmers’ market than grow their own fruit and vegetables.

However, a development in growing fruit trees on dwarf root stocks has meant that many fruit trees are suited for the small garden.

Alternatively, they can be grown in large containers. This is possible even on reasonably sized balconies with plenty of sun.

A “dwarf” fruit tree doesn’t mean the fruit is dwarf. For instance, the Fleming’s Nurseries’ range of Trixzie miniature fruit trees will produce full-size fruit from as early as two years.

A couple of examples are Trixzie “Gala” apple will grow to just 2m x 2m and, for cross pollination, use Trixzie “Pink Lady”.

PEACHES (with one exception), apricots and nectarines are self-pollinating, so only one is required. These are possibly better for balcony growing. Examples include the Trixzie “Nectazee” nectarine growing to just 1.5m x 1.5m. Of a similar size is Trixzie “Pixzee” peach with full-size fruit.

I’ve always been intrigued that when talking about “fruit” trees the topic doesn’t include “citrus” trees.

Many citrus trees are ideal for container growing and the “Meyer” lemon is possibly the best for containers.

Keep in mind all fruit trees require full sun and, for plants in containers, watering and feeding cannot be neglected.

Don’t use saucers under a container as they inhibit drainage and can cause root rot. But if you must, fill the saucer with pebbles and sit the container on top of the pebbles. Naturally, this is applicable to all pot plants.

With the exception of citrus, most fruit trees will not arrive in garden centres until about June, but now’s the time to start

Wing has been running his own restaurant for nearly three years and says that, with my help, he's in control of the tax side of things, including business activity statements and superannuation.

He says he's also comfortable with the award and industrial requirements, but is now wondering how his restaurant compares with other restaurants and their profitability.

I told Wing that it was gratifying to hear that he felt confident around his business.

"The question about comparing a business to others is often asked; it's called benchmarking," I told him.

"A very good source of small-business benchmarking is the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). It publishes many benchmarks for several industries on its website. There is a benchmark for restaurants.

“It is set up for three different income brackets and you can check against the one that is most suitable for you. When we lodge tax returns for our business clients we compare their figures to the benchmarks.

"We also know that the ATO compares returns lodged to the benchmarks so they do serve an important purpose. To arrive at these benchmarks the ATO aggregates information shown in tax returns lodged.

"While this is helpful to you for tax purposes, there is no evidence as to whether the figures shown are for efficient or inefficient restaurant operators. So while this is a good starting point, you will need to go further when looking at efficiency for your restaurant.”

Wing said he had been unaware that the ATO published these figures but wondered if there were any other benchmarks that might be helpful.

I told him that by searching "restaurant benchmarks" on the internet, he would find sites with benchmarking information.

"It is entirely up to you which you choose," I said. "As you know I use Mindshop processes for working with businesses. There is also a Mindshop benchmarking tool that we can use.

"This is a bit more complex than using the ATO benchmarks. You benchmark relevant aspects of your business against top performers in your industry.

"While it may take some time to set up and collect the data, it should be helpful to you in the long run. Once you have the data you can develop action plans and implement them during the coming months.

I suggest that sales would be a good place to start. You may also want to look at waste as I know you are interested in being sustainable and minimising the waste in your restaurant.”

Wing thought that sounded good and was keen to know if I had any other helpful ideas.

“I know you have a lot of regular customers so it might be useful to survey them for their opinions," I said.

"You could provide a short survey, say no more than five questions that you give to every customer with their tax invoice or, if you prefer, you could design a slightly longer survey using Survey Monkey and send it to your customers. You'll need a database of email addresses for this option.

"So let’s make an appointment for next week to progress this further.”
