Katy’s pole dance a big win for her sensual side

NOHRA WHEN Katy Eve started pole dancing seven years ago she says it was a bit more taboo than it is now.

“It was more of this secretive thing that you don’t tell your family or your work,” says Katy, 34, of Braddon.

But, mainstream or not, Katy is proud of her sensually-styled version of pole dancing, which stems from bars and burlesque, and is a big believer in empowering women through “sexy”.

A recent winner of the international competition Pole Theatre UK and a teacher and owner of The Brass Room in Fyshwick, Katy says it’s about being sexy for herself and not for men.

“There’s this big push with fitness-style pole dancing that downplays its origin,” she says.

“I think it’s particularly important for women to embrace their sensual side.

“But not in a way that they’re doing it for others, it’s for themselves.”

She first discovered pole dancing when a friend who had just had a baby and wanted to get fit took Katy along to a lesson with her.

“She asked me to come along and the rest is history,” Katy says.

While born and raised in Canberra, Katy spent three years in Perth and during that time trained at one of the “most prestigious

pole-dancing studios in Australia”, Bobbis Pole Studio.

It was also in Perth where she was “blown away” and inspired by the dancers who competed in Miss Pole Dance Australia.

So she entered a competition and the second time she competed was placed third and was able to go to the finals.

“It all started from watching that competition in Perth,” she says.

Now, Katy has won Miss Pole Dance ACT twice and after winning a division in Pole Theatre Australia, was eligible to compete in other cities such as Prague and Majorca.

But, she says her recent win in the Troxy Theatre in London, which she describes as a shocking surprise, has been one of her most important achievements.

“It was pretty amazing, I didn’t go in with expectations to win, I was up against some of the best pole dancers in the world,” she says.

“I just went in with the mindset to perform well.”

It was even more special for Katy with her sister there and her mum, who was watching her perform live for the first time.

Now, back in Canberra, but still feeling proud of her win, Katy continues to teach locals the femininity of pole dancing until the next competition.

“When I moved back to Canberra, all the studios were very fitness-based but for me, I like the sensual style and to move and be sexy, not for men, but for myself,” she says.

That’s what really drew her into pole, so she started her own studio focusing on the sensual side of pole dancing.

At first, Katy didn’t really understand what her studio would bring to people but now, she sees people often with barely any self-esteem find confidence through pole dancing.

“It’s really nice to give that to people,” she says.

“I didn’t understand how much power pole dancing would have.

“There’s obvious benefits from pole dancing, like it improves fitness, increases strength, especially core and upper body strength.”

But for Katy, pole dancing is much more than that.

While The Brass Room is largely a femalebased studio, which embraces everyone, Katy says she likes that it’s a place where strong women can come together.

“In my classes, I want students to lose themselves for that hour and have fun as well as get a workout and leave feeling good about themselves,” she says.

“As for my performances, I want to be able to inspire others the way I was inspired seven years ago.

“In general my style is sexy and sensual with flowy movements.

“It’s important for me to share pole dancing with more people because it has changed my life and I’ve seen it change other people’s lives.”

Mrs Kilbey’s inkling about debating Malcolm CANBERRA-raised rock star Steve Kilbey is heading back on the road with his iconic band The Church.

A national tour marking the 30th anniversary of the 1988 album “Starfish” – which included the hit “Under the Milky Way” – will also take in Canberra.

Promoting the tour, the Lyneham High-educated musician told ABC TV about representing the ACT in a debating competition with NSW. Kilbey’s family billeted a member of the visiting team, a young man by the name of Malcolm Bligh Turnbull. Kilbey’s mother predicted Turnbull would one day be Prime Minister.

Planners shamefully tow the ‘zero lot line’ “TO be, or not to be? That is the question”. With apologies to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the question for Canberra is: To be like every other ugly, modern city, or not to be?

Canberra is unique as the carefully planned national capital. The great joy of Canberra is that it is not Melbourne nor Sydney nor any other city. It has its own distinct character.

Unfortunately, the current government seems hell bent on losing this character and turning Canberra into a mini-Melbourne. Or a mini-any-other-city. No, thanks. Towering office blocks and blocks of flats encroaching on our footpaths is simply unacceptable. The term “zero lot line” describes these apartment and office buildings that front narrow footpaths.

The cities of great beauty in the world are not found in the glassfronted canyons and narrow, sunless streets of developer-influenced metropolises. They are characterised by room to breathe, to enjoy the sunlight and to celebrate difference. Even in Perth, where development pressure

With developer pressure the question remains – for how long?

The development of Campbell 5 is a case in point. The development brilliantly commenced with a wide, well-maintained park ready for the residents who would arrive later.

The first set of buildings had wide footpaths and access to the park. The recent example of the building on Constitution Avenue and Creswell Street with its close to zero lot line and domination over the Pedlar Restaurant provides an inexcusable example of a lack of planning control.

Another appalling example is on Vernon Circle. The new law courts’ construction has been developed with close to the zero lot line. Not so long ago a commuter driving around City Hill could feel the sense of space before dropping on to Northbourne Avenue. No longer!

These are just two examples.

There are plenty more. How could this happen? Who approved them? Is the minister asleep? Are developer donations to political parties having an influence? Why is the Opposition not screaming? Is this just developers pushing the envelope to screw every last square metre out of the government? Is this really the sort of a city Canberrans want?

It is not good enough to blame developers who have a role to maximise their profits while maintaining their reputation for quality construction.

The real responsibility lies with the planning department within the ACT government and with the Planning Minister Mick Gentleman and his predecessors. None have provided a real vision of building on the strengths of our city.

The concept of a “zero lot line” is really confronting. The original buildings down Northbourne Avenue through Dickson and Braddon were well set back from the street. Now the term “grand entrance” justifies turning the street into an ugly canyon.

Replacing the trees will only work if there is appropriate setback.

Look down Anzac Parade towards Lake Burley Griffin and enjoy the wide expanse, the avenue of trees and the sense of space makes this memorial avenue one of the great streets internationally. Granted, the entrance to the city is not ceremonial, however the original Northbourne Avenue design had extrapolated from the features of Anzac Parade. Addressing the spatial appeal, the trees and the setbacks are now even more critical as the development of the light rail and this city entrance proceeds.

Across Australia there is now a surfeit of apartments. The enthusiasm of some planners and their singular focus on this type of accommodation has resulted in a significant over supply. It might improve the rates

income of the government – but is hardly good planning. Additionally, stuffing families into apartments just because they do not have the same wherewithal as others is an anathema to the “Australian Dream”.

Hapless ways heritage is treated in Canberra The ACT Heritage Unit is at the bottom of the organisational structure within the Planning Directorate. Go figure how that works when it comes to being independent.

WHEN the ACT’s Suburban Land Agency recently agreed to withdraw the Gold Creek Homestead from immediate sale, it was a win for heritage, thanks largely to the National Trust ACT. The ACT government’s ACT Heritage Council had decided not to list Gold Creek Homestead as a significant site. For those who observe the mysterious workings of the ACT Heritage Council, this was not a surprise.

There are many problems with heritage under this ACT Labor/ Greens government. The ACT Heritage Council is in theory independent of government. Government appoints its members and it depends on the government’s ACT Heritage Unit for administration.

The ACT Heritage Unit is at the bottom of the organisational structure within the Planning Directorate. Go figure how that works when it comes to being independent.

Also consider how a heritage unit could do anything about wider heritage issues while being the lowest unit within the infamous Planning Directorate. What chance given the

common experience is that this directorate always favours the development lobby? And how committed is the development sector to identifying and enhancing our heritage?

For my sins I have read through the March 2018 publication put out by the City Renewal Authority – the “City and Gateway Draft Urban Design Framework”. This refers to the future of the northern entrance to the national capital. Residents identify this entrance as the main entrance to their hometown. Surely with all that, heritage would be a key factor listed as influencing any redevelopment along this major piece of national and local infrastructure.

There’s token mentions of the easy and obvious– the Sydney and Melbourne Buildings, Haig Park and Sullivans Creek (not much to do there).

But there is no overall strategy dealing with the fact that this entrance from the border to the lake is one large heritage site. This is probably because this government mistakenly thinks that a heritage value attached to any site or building means that development and changes cannot occur.

At the 2016 ACT election the Planning Minister was asked for Labor’s heritage policy. The response was that the ACT Labor government did not have one and that it would continue to do what it already does.

People concerned with our heritage are still pondering the implications of that answer. And now we have this “Gateway Framework” thingy. So we can clearly see that they will continue to do what they have always done – not much.

There is one more mention of heritage in the Framework: I quote

“The design of our buildings today is fundamentally important, as they will be our future heritage”. If you have been watching the latest proposals and approvals for towers along Northbourne and within Dickson, there is what this government City Renewal Authority sees as our future heritage. Wonderful!

As I mentioned at the top of this piece, the small win over the Gold Creek Homestead was through the efforts of several people, including those of the National Trust ACT. What

is remarkable is that this crew do this voluntarily. From the few people I have met over the years, the National Trust ACT is not exactly a fierce band of dangerous radicals. But I could be wrong on that.

This is an organisation that works, when time and resources allow, quietly and methodically with governments, residents and anyone else who cares to see this wonderful city flourish and grow. Sadly in researching this, I looked through recent years of funding and it seems that our planning and arts ministers are yet to recognise the value of having financial resources allocated to assist the running of the National Trust ACT. Maybe it is an oversight? Dear Ministers – this could be easily fixed.

Clearing heritage trees for trams is ‘appalling’ ‘CityNews’ horticultural writer CEDRIC BRYANT is despairing at the suggestion of clearing century old trees for trams up Commonwealth Avenue JUST the thought of removing the Cedrus trees on Commonwealth Avenue in front of the Hyatt Hotel for stage two of the light rail is appalling.

It would appear that, like old buildings in Canberra, trees don’t have a heritage value and must be destroyed in the name of progress. In another publication, a recent article asked “Is our lush, planned city losing its soul?”

The simple answer is, “yes”.

It’s claimed that these trees have a limited life? How do we know how long they will live? There is not an expert on earth who can ascertain their exact life expectancy.

We know that English/European trees grow faster in our climate than in their country of origin. However, even the oldest exotic trees in Australia are only about 150 years old, whereas oaks for example in their native habitat will easily grow to 500-600 years old.

It has been suggested these Cedrus may have only between five to 50 years of growth left in them, that’s a huge variation. So let’s give them a chance or do we simply euthanase them for the tram.

Certainly, if they are showing serious decline or disease this has to be

taken into account. But I don’t believe this is the case and just an excuse to remove them. The suggestion of a tram proponent to take cuttings to grow on these trees is ridiculous. How long do they think it takes for a conifer cutting to grow large enough for planting out?

Charles Weston was the first superintendent of Parks and Gardens establishing the Yarralumla Nursery in 1913.

He experimented with many exotic and native trees for the suitability of growing here. When he retired Alexander Bruce took over in January 1926. Bruce continued the great work of Weston and was charged with the responsibility of laying out the public parks and gardens of the Federal Capital; including Commonwealth Avenue.

In a pamphlet written by Bruce in 1927/28 on “Roses of the Federal Capital” (of which I have an original) he describes Commonwealth Avenue: “As a one way traffic avenue 200ft wide.

“The central plantation, 40ft wide, is planted with a double line of Cedrus deodar on the outer edges with a central line of Cedrus atlantica. The whole of the intervening spaces between these trees planted with roses”.

The pamphlet continues with the

ground preparation, spacing and varieties of roses including a detailed plan. Obviously, as the trees grew it became impractical to keep the roses.

Bruce also laid out the rose gardens in front of the Old Parliament House in 1928/29, which still exist for our pleasure.

Bruce’s final comment in his pamphlet read: “Already clearly it is becoming apparent a city of gardens will provide an admirable milieu for Federal Capital activities. Visitors from overseas, officials and others have been greatly pleased with Canberra. They have given expression to their sense of fitness to the Federal Capital and its surrounds for its purpose of national government.”

So where have our planners gone off the rails for our garden city?

If these trees are not heritage listed and/or on the National Tree Register, it begs the question why not? These are an important part of the history of early Canberra. It is of interest that similar sentiments on the value of these trees have been endorsed

by Dr John Gray, former landscape architect director for the NCDC, and Tony Powell, former commissioner of the NCDC concerning the removal of these trees.

And yet for all the work of Weston, Bruce and others that followed in establishing Canberra as a garden city others are set on destroying it.

Say goodbye to the undermined garden city Former town planner TONY POWELL accuses the ACT government of “gaming” the selling of land by auction so as to maximise profitability THERE has been a series of malpractices by the Barr Government throughout the whole of its four-year term of office that have been fundamentally destructive, not only in terms of meeting designated social and economic needs but also in terms of respecting and maintaining the planned “garden city” character for which Canberra is famous.

However, there is also another chain of activity that needs to be repaired, namely the electoral inertia that is peculiar to Canberra and which I think has to be overcome before better public administration becomes possible.

The Barr government has established a number of land-development agencies with implied “town planning” obligations, however, none of which seem to base their planning and development operations on explicit or published needs assessments.

The determinative factor in this regard is that, from the outset in 1989, the first Legislative Assembly evaded the statutory obligation contained in the Commonwealth legislation to the effect that “there will be a statutory town-planning system and a responsible statutory planning and

development authority”.

It managed to do so by enacting territory legislation that established an ACT Planning and Land Authority (ACTPLA) as a “corporation sole”, but without any resources, in other words, with no funding and no staff.

The deep-seated objection underlying this stance has been, and continues to be, incompetent town planning, which will continue as long as there is not an independent, expert, statutory planning authority rather the sole prerogative of territory governments.

The fundamental underlying problem of this attitude is that both chief ministers and Assembly members are prone to undermine statutory town-planning procedures in order to achieve personal or political party benefits and objectives, to the detriment of, in Canberra’s case, that “garden city” character.

The ACT now has a multiplicity of town-planning agencies, following the dramatic failure of the Land Development Agency because of its suspect land acquisition practices that the Barr government has declined to investigate or justify, that may be summarised as follows: • Environment, Planning and Sustain-

able Development Directorate, which reports to three ministers (Berry, Gentleman, Rattenbury).

• ACT Planning and Land Authority (ACTPLA).

• ACT Chief Planner – The 1988 statutory position responsible for the administration of the Territory Plan, including the assessment of development applications.

• City Renewal Authority, responsible for the redevelopment of the Northbourne Avenue corridor.

• Suburban Land Agency, responsible for the delivery of “greenfield” residential estates and with a focus on urban renewal projects in town centres and suburbs.

• Chief Minister’s Department, affordable land and housing provision.

The Chief Minister is regularly

banging on about the need for highrise residential development, on the grounds that the availability of urban land is diminishing at a significant rate which, generally speaking, his planning department, if there was one that was adequately funded, would be able to demonstrate, is simply not true.

The ultimate urban capacity of the ACT was considered by the NCDC to be somewhere in the range of 800,000 to one million population, including the Kowen Plateau.

The truth is that Andrew Barr thinks that higher densities will be cheaper for the government to fund from an infrastructure and land bank viewpoint, as do both the NSW and Victorian premiers.

In the last few weeks, two typical intensification projects have been announced. Geocon has lodged a development application for a 16-storey hotel in the CBD between Garema Place and Bunda Street, which will rise above 50 metres and will dwarf the Canberra Centre and block sunlight over a significant area of Garema Place.

There are three other development projects for hotel and apartment projects in Civic already in the pipeline that collectively will raise difficult car, public transport and overshadowing issues beyond the professional capacity of ACTPLA to assess and evaluate.

Further afield in Manuka a seven-storey hotel, modelled on the LeGrand Hotel in Paris, is the subject of a development application in the business area that unfortunately has a two-storey building height limit specified in the Territory Plan partly for heritage reasons, a development that would significantly block sunlight over cherished footpath eating areas in Franklin Street and Canberra Avenue, also a project that ACTPLA does not have funding or the knowhow to reliably evaluate.

It is clear that the Barr government has not made available a sufficient amount of residential land as a quantum of lot types and at affordable prices, also that it has “gamed” the selling of land by auction so as to maximise budget profitability.

It’s a ridiculous fact that Canberra, 200 kilometres away from the Pacific coast in the NSW hinterland, has the second most expensive land and housing in Australia.

remove the bird and this gentleman, seeing my distress, took the bags, removed the bird, instructed me to go and have a quiet cup of tea and walked off with the bird to dispose of elsewhere,” she says.

“Words cannot describe my thanks and respect for the kind deed performed and for interrupting his morning routine to help a stranger crying on a footpath.”

ELSEWHERE, a local car salesman put his customers ahead of his birthday and turned up early on Saturday to complete a sale for Janis Meikle, of Yarralumla.

“Danny Parascos was a dream to

deal with,” she says.

“We’d been into another major dealership on Melrose Drive and couldn’t raise any interest from an indifferent salesman. We wandered on to the Slaven Mazda forecourt and the contrast couldn’t have been greater; Danny was welcoming, knowledgeable and let the vehicle sell itself. No pressure, just enthusiasm for the brand. And then he came in early on Saturday to hand over the car with great ceremony – on his big day! What a guy.”

Put teeth into the law, train owners Tightening laws and regulations may help, but in my view a more feasible way of managing and preventing dog attacks is enforcing the education of dog owners.

THE recent savage dog attack on a policewoman in Canberra has raised again the serious questions on how to reduce the incidence of these attacks and how to regulate dog ownership.

Blaming the dog and its breed is often the first reason put forward as the cause of the attack.

Certain breeds such as terriers or guard dogs certainly have inherited a heightened level of aggression, but not all bite people.

Breeders carry a large part of the responsibility of dogs inheriting aggressive tendencies especially towards people. You hear rarely, for example, of greyhounds biting people, because they have been bred for decades for low aggression towards humans.

Owners certainly carry some responsibility if their dog bites someone. Mishandling, either via abuse or by spoiling, as we often see with little biters such as chihuahuas, can lead dogs to biting people. But again, there are severely abused dogs that don’t bite and those that need little encouragement to sink their teeth into a person.

But is it the person at fault who gets attacked?

Theoretically, you should have a fair amount of control over a dog attacking you or not before the attack.

Placating visual signals can be given to the dog to keep aggression low. Avoiding eye contact, looking bored, turning side on to the dog, behaving in a calm, friendly and positive manner giving the dog plenty of space can all prevent a dog from attacking.

However, once an attack has started it can be difficult to disengage from the dog. The literature recommends protecting vital body parts such as hands and face and front of the body by pressing against a solid object like a wall or tree, if those are not available to curl into a ball, lie still and avoid screaming to not agitate the dog further.

So what can be done to prevent future dog

RETURNING to work after July 1, like thousands of other Canberra workers who have to park in one of the many ACT government-operated parking lots, I got yet another stark reminder that Andrew Barr and his government are fixated on gouging Canberrans (to fund their white-elephant projects).

Parking fees have gone up yet again, the fourth year running of such increases (20 per cent in the lot that I park at) for no justifiable reason, that when coupled with similar across-the-board annual increases to rates, taxes and other fees is very quickly and noticeably making living in this city very expensive.

Once-off or increases to government fees and charges in line with the annual CPI inflation rate are reasonable, but the rampant increases in costs imposed on us by this government per its so called “taxation reform” (aka cash grab) over the last several years is well out of hand.

When is the gouging of Canberrans by this government going to stop?

When will this government live within its means and work with the capital it raises already versus continually seeking to appropriate more from us year after year after year?

Answer – when we vote them out at the 2020 election. Canberrans it’s time to wake up and take action.

Unfortunately, many people think that puppy classes at the vet’s is all the training their dog needs.

Going to a dog club or a qualified dog trainer is the best choice to train dogs effectively and for the long term. Most dogs will benefit substantially by being regularly trained for the first two to three years of their lives. This applies especially to breeds such as working, guard and many hunting dogs. Going to a dog club is great for participating in dog sports and social activities, but they may be less helpful with aggression issues.

Private trainers will provide individual attention and are often more inclined to take on more serious issues such as aggression or fear-based problems.

Pay attention, Paul IT was not unreasonable for columnist Paul Costigan to suggest that my public speaking capacity is well past its “use-by” date (CN, July 5). I am in my mid-80s and hard of hearing so that, fortunately, people tend not to call upon me any more.

In the case of the Canberra Conversation Lecture Series, I was responding to three main points that Jon Stanhope had raised in his introduction by specifying six main issues that need to be addressed, not only by the ACT government but also by the Canberra community generally, as follows: 1. Revised town planning procedures based on accurate and broadly-based “needs assessments”.

2. More efficient and more effective planning administration methods and organisation.

3. An unwarranted emphasis on urban intensification and high-rise housing development to the detriment of conventional needs.

4. The unwarranted cost and low transportation utility value of the light rail project stages one and two.

5. Manipulation of the land administration system by the government to the detriment of socio-economic needs.

6. The problem of electoral inertia, which means no pressure on the Assembly or the government.

Perhaps Paul Costigan might like to turn his mind to these aspects of my address, which could be a useful thing to do, rather than worry about my, and my colleagues’, decrepitude.

Jill loves the job of capturing memories MATERNITY and newborn photographer, Jill Dolby, of LoJo Photography, specialises in capturing and keeping the love that’s created with the arrival of a baby.

NAMED after Sir Philip Fysh, a Tasmanian politician who helped bring about Australia’s Federation, Fyshwick has been a suburb in Canberra since the 1920s.

The suffix “wick”, from Old English, means “dwelling place” – and, by extension, “village” or “district”. Its streets are named after Australia’s industrial towns and regions.

Rob keeps the focus on personal fitness DURING winter, Focus Fitness’ owner Rob Goodrick is a big believer that aches and pains can be dealt with, largely, by keeping exercise up.

The fitness-enthusiast opened Focus Fitness about five years ago and has qualifications in rehabilitation and remedial exercise.

Rob’s personal experience with injury makes him empathetic to his clients, which is why each program largely depends on the individual and how they feel.

“For example, if someone has a knee condition, I will specifically tailor the training program on how their knee feels on the day,” he says.

Which is easy for him to do as the training sessions are personalised, catering for groups of two or three.

“I think the social side of it is incredibly important. It’s what keeps people motivated and it becomes something they want to keep coming back to,” he says.

Passionate about different kinds of exercise such as Olympic lifting, CrossFit and boxing, Rob incorporates a lot of these training routines in his programs, as well as lifting, resistance training, aerobics and high-intensity circuit training.

THE EXPERTS OF FYSHWICK Make a dramatic start to acting CREATIVE hub might not be the first words used when describing Fyshwick but it’s been packed with drama and artistic flare since the arrival of the Canberra Academy of Dramatic Arts (CADA) in 2009.

And soon, it’ll be filled with drama enthusiasts, both experienced and beginners, who are keen to try one of its many short courses starting this month.

For people who have never tried acting before, CADA’s managing director and co-founder Elizabeth Scott recommends the short course, “Acting 101”.

“It’s a great way to test the waters and see if acting is for you,” she says.

This course, as well as many other CADA courses, sees people as young as 17 right up to 76 years of

age join, from all walks of life.

“This course is also a great way to build confidence as it gets you standing up in front of people and helps you feel more comfortable in your own skin,” she says.

After that course Elizabeth suggests people might want to try “Screen Acting 101”, which looks at different ways things are filmed, such as television advertising.

Or, new to CADA is “Dance for Actors”, which teaches basic dance for budding actors and for nonactors who just want an introductory dance course.

The Place away from the madding crowd SITUATED in the Dairy Road complex, away from the busy centre of Fyshwick, is the funky, family-run cafe, The Public Place.

Previously called Station Bar and Cafe, the cafe was refurbished and relaunched more than a year ago and now falls under the same name of its sister cafe in Chisholm.

The Public Place is a true family affair with Sandra, her husband and their two teenagers running both cafes.

But, the family has definitely grown over time and Sandra says most of their customers become a part of it after visiting their cozy and inviting space.

“Here, you get to escape the chaos and sit out on the deck, which overlooks the Brindabellas,” she says.

“It feels like you’re miles away from anywhere but really

you’re just five minutes from the chaos of Fyshwick.

“We’ve got loads of front door parking and there’s a conference room inside the cafe, which can be booked out, not only for conferences but also for events.”

Sandra describes the menu as “funky” and says there’s a lot of gluten-free (about 70 per cent of the menu), paleo and vegan options.

Their schnitzel wrap is a customer favourite but there’s also “a mixture of everything” on the menu from burgers to salads and quiches on the all-day breakfast and all-day lunch menu.

HE’S the quintessential Canberra-boymade-good so there’ll be smiles all round at the news cellist Julian Smiles has been chosen as Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s inaugural Artist in Focus.

That means we’ll see him playing his 1827 Lorenzo Ventapane cello, first as part of the Llewellyn Series performing with pianist Piers Lane and violinist Dimity Hall in the fearsome “Triple Concerto for Cello, Violin and Piano” by Beethoven. CSO chief conductor Nick Milton describes the piece being like “a combination of chamber music and orchestral music together”.

After that, Smiles will play with Hall in the CSO’s intimate Recital Series at Wesley, and with another former Canberra pianist Bernadette Harvey in its Australian Series at the National Portrait Gallery.

Smiles took time out from his packed schedule as a soloist, a member of the Goldner String Quartet and the Australia Ensemble@UNSW and as cello lecturer for Sydney Conservatorium to chat to “CityNews.”

He’s tickled pink to be returning to his hometown, where, although his parents are no longer living, he has a brother and extended family.

“I feel that living in Canberra is a much more manageable size and I still feel happy coming here,” he says.

“I was at Canberra School of Music for a long time. I studied there with Nelson Cooke from the age of seven when I was in primary school, then did my degree there around 1987 and 1988, then I left in 1989.”

He hasn’t looked back. After a stint with teacher Janos Starker at Indiana University, at age 19, he was

time and in the Piano Trio we all function together.”

Of the fearsome “Piano Trio Concerto”, he observes that Beethoven wrote it for well-known solo cello virtuoso Anton Kraft, “so it’s very challenging and goes very high, although it’s still very well written, like all Beethoven.”

Although the cello was well-established, he says “we don’t have a Beethoven cello concerto, which is ridiculous.” Legend has it that Beethoven approached admired cellist Bernhard Romberg and said: “I’d like to write a concerto for you,” but the reply was, “No, thank you, I compose all my own pieces”. Bad answer.

So, no cello concerto but as Smiles says: “I’m very happy to have the ‘Triple Concerto’, it gives you a sense of how it might have been”. And anyway, there’s plenty of other repertoire for cellists.

His role as inaugural Artist in Focus means “a largerthan-usual profile for a performer.”

After playing the “Triple Concerto” on the Wednesday and Thursday, he and Dimity will perform cello and Cellist Julian Smiles… “I feel that living in Canberra violin pieces on the Sunday at Wesley in a program of is a much more manageable size and I still feel “firsts”, including Bach’s “Suite for Solo Cello No. 1” in happy coming here.”

The young curator who asks: ‘Why?’

IT’S one thing to be a talented artist creating beautiful or provocative work, but it’s quite another to get work seen by the viewing public in a cogent, comprehensible exhibition – you need a curator.

With this in mind, the Capital Arts Patrons’ Organisation has, for the fourth year running, awarded an art history and curatorship graduate from the ANU the chance to curate an exhibition highlighting the talent of young graduate artists, one of whom will win a $500 cash prize donated by CAPO and judged by Peter Jones and Alex Martinis Roe. Angus (“Gus”) McGrath is the latest curator-recipient and he has plenty of street cred. By the time he graduated with “firsts” in art history and curatorship from the ANU School of Art late last year, he’d chalked up an impressive list of shows, curating “We Collapse, We Build New Cities” at ANCA, “Beat” Angus (“Gus”) McGrath. at Tributary Projects with Peter Maloney and “Styling the Distributed Body” at Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Manuka.

He’d also written a swag of catalogue essays, volunteered at the NGA and been an intern at PhotoAccess.

And he’s won another graduate prize, the EASS Canberra Grammar School Curatorial Award.

After years of hard work, McGrath heard he’d won CAPO’s Curatorial Internship Award in December, so enjoyed a bit of a breather over Christmas to work out what the parameters might be and to ask himself: “What am I doing?”

“I’m young but I’m not super-young,” McGrath tells “CityNews”.

“It’s hard to get work after a degree.”

It’s hardly surprising to learn that the title of his coming CAPO exhibition of work by six emerging artists (Jeremy Brown, Dean Cross, Bryan Foong, Alex Hobba, Skye Jamieson and Nyx Mathews) is “Why?” “As it’s an emerging curator’s prize you’d expect most of the artists to be emerging, but actually I picked the artists I wanted, a mix of graduates and emerging artists,” he says.

And no, they’re not all his best mates. In fact he met lots of new people in the process.

A well-curated show, he believes, “gives people access, creates ambiguity, and gives spaces to people.

“I might enjoy theory but I understand that most people don’t, there’s a physical, practical aspect to curating, you have to select, you’ve got to have an eye.”

The six artists he’s selected explore a range of materials, but McGrath hasn’t forced an overarching theme on the show.

Jeremy Brown is a furniture-maker known for his “meditative” benches, but they interact with textiles. Dean Cross is an indigenous artist, best-known here as a dancer, who nowadays challenges notions of painting. Bryan Foong’s paintings are deeply romantic yet non-pictorial.

STUDENTS of cinema’s horror genre may well know the debt they owe to Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (née Godwin) for her winning (after much travail and frustration) entry in a contest that the literary glitterati used to divert the discomfort of a Swiss winter in 1816.

The film bearing her name purports to tell the story of her affair with married poet Percy Bysshe Shelley whom, after the suicide of his first wife in a short-lived marriage, she married and bore three children before Shelley died six years later.

We might wonder how correctly it describes the Swiss house party forming its dramatic core. Wonder no more. The bulk of Emma Jensen’s debut feature screenplay from which Saudi director Haifaa Al-Mansour has constructed this interesting film depends on John Polidori’s diary, which forms the foundation of the scholarship that subsequently told the world what happened.

Polidari was personal physician to Lord George (“mad, bad and dangerous to know”) Byron who had wealth enough to host that house party where great shenanigans unfolded amid poetry which endures to this day. The film implies rather than depicts guests’ erotic cavortings although it is acceptably frank when necessary.

THE English-speaking title of writer/director Stephane Robelin’s romantic fable doesn’t exactly reflect its French original – “Un Profil Pour Deux”. A more apt English name might draw inspiration from the aphorism about the tangled webs we weave when first we practise to deceive.

“Back to Burgundy” (M) FEW films have charmed and satisfied me more than this family saga set in a winemaking domain in France’s Burgundy region.

Writer/director Cédric Klapisch is in no hurry to tell about a vigneron father’s three adult children who inherit the land, vines, equipment, cellars, debts and business obligations. A perceptive screenplay goes among the relationships within the family and with their neighbours, sequences telling how the French make wine and depictions of the seasons and what they purport for an arduous and technically complex business.

Returning after a decade’s absence to farewell his dying father, elder son Jean (Pio Marmai) arrives just as sister Juliette (Ana Girardot) and younger brother Jérémie (François Civil) are wondering whether harvesting the white grapes should start next Monday or this Wednesday. Decisions of such importance have hitherto been taken by their dying father. Now the children must decide that and every other matter concerning the business. It’s not straightforward. They have only what they have learned from him.

There’s a brief sequence purporting to have been shot in Australia. Jean’s decision, after two vintages back in Burgundy, to return here strikes me as a respectful homage to Australian wine.

And overlaying the whole of the film’s 113 minutes is a sense of deep affection for the myriad of details that wine-making involves.

When replanting with new stock it’s important to replace all the soil in the bed or, better still, find a new spot for them. In replacing the soil, replace it to at least 30 centimetres deep, ideally with soil from your own compost heap mixed with new soil.

The soil should be slightly acid and to achieve this simply dig in plenty of organic matter, such as those fallen leaves now starting to rot. A handful of blood and bone fertiliser to each square metre is also beneficial.

Equally important is to only buy certified virus-free plants from a garden centre, which means not accepting specimens from wellmeaning friends who may be thinning out their plants. Virus-free plants will have a government certification tag plus the name of the grower.

Ideally, make mounds of soil to form a ridge about 50 centimetres wide and flattened on the top. If space allows, form a series of these ridges about two metres long parallel to each other.

Cover the ridges with black plastic stretched tight and held down along the edges with soil.

Next cut a series of crosses in the plastic about 10 centimetres across with the plants spaced about 20 centimetres apart down the centre of each ridge. I use a flat-bladed knife laid across the roots and gently push them through the plastic into the soil. The alleys between the ridges must be kept weed free, ideally with a mulch of lucerne hay, straw or pea straw.
