Walking the borders

A FUNDRAISING walk of the ACT border will be held next month in aid of the Conservation Council ACT Region, the peak conservation organisation for Canberra and the Capital region.

The ACT’s 306-kilometre border crosses a variety of the ACT’s ecosystems, from alpine forests to diverse wooded and grassy lowlands.

Walk the Border ACT is being led

by Conservation Council president Rod Griffiths, who will be joined by other walkers for one or more stages of the walk.

“The walk will be exciting, challenging, and will allow those participating to experience parts of the ACT less travelled”, Mr Griffiths said.

“It will take 21 days commencing on October 7 from Hall, following the border in a clockwise direction.

The route will take in some of the ACT’s roughest and most beautiful country, including the source of the ACT’s water supply. But it is not all hard and many stages cater to a range of walking abilities.”

Walkers will help bring sponsorship to the event and funds raised will assist the Conservation Council’s ongoing environmental work.

THE days of typing your health condition into Google may be over with the creation of Health Horizon, a free website that keeps consumers and clinicians up-todate on health innovations around the world.

“You might see a small news story about the discovery of a new chemical that has good results for Parkinson’s patients and they have to say something like, ‘this might be available in 10 years’ time’ – and then it disappears into the ether,” says co-founder Mathew McGann.

“That’s what we want to solve. People hear about these things and actually want to know if it succeeds or how it goes, or go on a trial, or even to invest or well-wish the innovators to let them know they’ve got a following.”

Co-founder Marcus Dawe says the Health Horizon platform is a bit like Allhomes, a place you can go to see all things related to health innovations.

“It’s a showcase of all the different innovations right across the health sector, nationally and internationally,” he says.

“We’re not focused just on medicines or devices, it’s everything and it’s born global although we’re operating from Canberra.

“We look around the world, monitor the places where innovations happen,

Mathew says he was completing his PhD in physics and when they met they started talking about the inkling of the problem they wanted to solve – that innovators were coming up with new ideas that couldn’t readily be seen by the people who needed them or could help them progress.

Mathew says that Health Horizon has hundreds of thousands of data points

that it monitors so they can track how the innovations are progressing and how real it’s becoming – but the kicker is that it’s available for anyone to access.

“We believe we cover what’s missing in all the other attempts in improving collaboration online, by bringing consumers in and making the website aimed at their level you capture everyone above that level,” he says.

“We’re giving all innovators the opportunity to link with what they need – whether it’s money, collaborators, trial participants, or consumers to do surveys on.”

Marcus says that on the public site there are about 1500 innovations, but their data set is watching around 200,000.

“All the information about progress out there is available on the internet but it’s not structured – it’s a news article here, a patent registration here, a trial test in a database there,” says Mathew.

“We then convert it into an event on a timeline that also points to resources, such as it made FDA approval and you can click the report. We don’t invent new information, we collect trustworthy reports around them.”

Marcus says Health Horizon is about understanding what your options are.

“It’s time we had a credible place we can go to find out, not just what your doctor is telling you right now but what’s coming up in the future.”

Populist dangers to feeling safe at school

A PETITION from close to a thousand people in the ACT was a catalyst for a debate on defending minorities within our community. The real challenge for democracy is looking after minorities, for even some of the most atrocious dictatorships have looked after their majority.

The petition presented in August by MLA Andrew Wall, shadow minister for Education, called on the government “to stop any and all current and future ACT government support and funding to the Safe Schools Coalition program”. It also called for “the removal of the SSP and associated resources from ACT schools where it may already be in use”.

Education Minister Yvette Berry immediately lashed out at Wall with “I am appalled” and “he should be ashamed of himself”. She was “deeply saddened” pointing out Wall had initiated the petition as well as presenting it to the Assembly. She argued the petition will say to LGBTIQ young people: “There is something wrong with you, you are not welcome, you are not to be included in our schools”.

The petition identified “families have serious concerns about the political and social agenda of Safe Schools Coalition, the Safe Schools Program”. It went on to express serious apprehension about “materials and associated resources” being “inappropriate” leading to “identity confusion and anxiety in developing children”.

There is no question about the right of Wall to initiate or to present a petition. Nor is there doubt about his petitioners’ right to make a request of the Legislative Assembly. There are genuine concerns regarding this program right across Australia. Putting such concerns to the Assembly is an appropriate and effective tool in the democratic process.

However, such petitions also provide an insight into where different members of the Assembly stand on social issues, on equity and the rights of the vulnerable and minorities.

The terms of the petition identify the discomfort felt by just 998 conservative members of the community who had signed the petition.

No doubt there are many others who would have supported the approach had they known about the petition.

Greens MLA Caroline Le Couteur decried

The danger of conservative politics is the inclination to support majorities at the expense of minorities. the timing as “very unfortunate” being at “the time of the same-sex marriage voluntary postal survey”.

Conservative MLA Elizabeth Kikkert probably thought she had a debating triumph by quoting a student: “I have been told my whole life that people don’t have a right to touch my body in a way that makes me feel uncomfortable, so why is it okay for a teacher to touch my mind in a way that makes me feel uncomfortable in the exact same way?”

The quote backfires. The very point of the Safe Schools Program is, first, to reinforce the importance of this concept of the right to feel comfortable. Then, more importantly, to have such students put themselves in the shoes of another, a more vulnerable person – thereby understanding what makes the “other” feel uncomfortable.

The Safe Schools Coalition website reveals issues such as alcohol and other drugs, online safety bullying and diversity at the primary school level as well as safe and responsible choices and healthy minds and bodies at the secondary level.

The site itself states: “The national program resources do not include posters related to uniforms or include role play activities. Nor do our resources discuss sex education.”

Minister Berry said: “The ACT government will not be changing its mind about Safe Schools. I will make sure that the duty of care that each of us has in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of every child is met”.

The danger of conservative politics is the inclination to support majorities at the expense of minorities. This concept is sometimes called “populism” and the last thing we need is a populist government.

Time to grow up, Michael MICHAEL Attwell, of Dunlop (CN, September 7), says he is sick of LGBTIQ people “crying discrimination” and complains that it is really motorsport fans being discriminated against.

Evidently the ACT government hasn’t given them enough buckets of taxpayer money.

Since when has being a motorsport fan stopped you from getting a job, or got you fired from one? Since when is motorsport something that could get you sacked from a career in the military or the police force?

Since when have motorsport followers been criminalised with a blanket ban attached to a jail term of 10-14 years’ hard labour? Since when have motorsports fans endured systemic and organised bashing by gangs of thugs? Since when did being a motorsport fan get you refused service at a commercial business?

I have lived half my life under threat of imprisonment because of repressive laws against same-sex relationships.

Some of those closest to me spent most of their military or police careers having to actively disguise their sexuality to avoid being dismissed. I have experienced being targeted by a gang of cowards with baseball bats (in Canberra), and got away only because I was quicker than them.

These anti-gay laws and attitudes have only changed in very recent times, and only because people with balls have stood up to the bullies who wanted to keep decent people living in fear.

Mr Attwell has experienced no such hardships. Yet he whines like a crybaby because his chosen recreation isn’t getting special treatment. Time to grow up, pal.

WHERE do fashion designers get their inspiration? The answer, for young designer Charly Thorn and her new spring-summer collection, is lazy summer days in the Whitsundays sailing with her family.

Charly is just 17 and has already showcased her first full collection – on the catwalk at Fashfest last year – which included a spectacular gown worn by supermodel Anneliese Seubert. She’s now in Canada showcasing her latest tropicalinspired designs at Vancouver Fashion Week. Then it’s Fashfest 2017 and then LA Fashion Week.

Designer Charly Thorn… “I want people to say ‘wow, I never thought of fine wool as a fabric for resort wear’.”

“It’s been a whirlwind,” says Charly, who describes her latest collection as “modern, romantic and strong”.

“It’s high-end resort wear that will look fabulous worn by a confident woman lounging on a superyacht,” says the young designer.

“The colour scheme is aqua, teal green and white, with gold accessories. And the shoes are amazing. I’m so thrilled about the shoes, but won’t say anything before they’re seen on the catwalk.”

The fabrics are just as inspirational to the designer.

Charly, who grew up in the Snowy Mountains and now lives in Cooma, naturally loves Merino wool.

“Even though this is a summer collection, I’ve used wool.

It’s so breathable,” she says.

“And I want people to say ‘wow, I never thought of fine wool as a fabric for resort wear’.”

Charly is also using a transparent, light silk chiffon and a 100 per cent linen.

“I adapted a tropical image to make an original design and then had it printed on linen in Sydney,” says Charly.

“It’s super exciting to see it all come together.”

This new collection mixes many separates – skirts, tops, dresses, pants, culottes, undergarments and a couple of amazing gowns. It’s working hard for the designer with the Vancouver, Canberra and LA fashion shows.

“Vancouver discovered me after Fashfest 2016,” says Charly. “They spotted the media coverage and images of my garments online. I was also approached by Milan Fashion Week after Fashfest, too, but can’t fit it all in this year. But I almost jumped out of my skin when I saw the words ‘Milan Fashion Week’ on my email.”

GET up close and personal with a range of birds at the Canberra Walk-in Aviary.

The aviary is a 1000sqm planted walk-in enclosure that has about 550 birds from about 60 different species.

“The aviary is great fun for all ages. You have the chance to get up close and personal with a range of birds,” says Mick Logan, owner and manager of the aviary.

“While not all birds will interact with you, you get the chance to observe, up close, species of birds that otherwise would be hard to see in the wild.

“We give you a small plate of food and a tub of mealworms and you can wander around and feed the birds.”

Mick says that people are welcome to take photos of the birds.

“Providing the weather is fine you can have a great time feeding the birds or just observing our feathered friends,” Mick says.

CHILD Players, a family-run theatre group which gives children aged 10-16 the opportunity to learn all aspects of theatre, will be presenting “The Snow Queen” over the holidays.

Its director Kitty Malan, 21, was a former “child player” and loves being able to pass on her positive and supportive experience from when she was in the program.

“It’s a wonderful experience and is the only place that gives young people the theatre experience backstage and on the stage,” she says.

The Snow Queen is a story Kitty read as a child and thought it would be interesting to explore theatrically.

It’s a tale about friendship and growing up as Gerda goes on a mission to save her best friend, Kai, from the icy Snow Queen.

“It’s a great show to engage young people and engage them with new ideas and show them a love of theatre,” she says.

“I think the Snow Queen is going to look magnificent and larger than life.

“There’s also a lot of odd characters that people are going to fall in love with.”

CHILDREN aren’t the only ones who will get to play at the National Film and Sound Archive these holidays, adults will too, but rather than games they’ll be playing music.

With the fourth anniversary of The Vinyl Lounge approaching on October 6, music-lovers can expect some fun surprises, says publicity co-ordinator Amanda Diaz.

“People can bring their most beloved vinyl records and they’ll be played on an analogue sound system, which plays them with amazing quality,” she says.

“If you love music there’s no better place than to enjoy it with other music lovers.”

As for the children, the National Film and Sound Archive has its “Book Heroes on the Big Screen” program, which will feature three Roald Dahl inspired films including “The BFG”, “James and the Giant Peach” and “Fantastic Mr Fox”.

A further three films will be played that aren’t Roald Dahl related including “The Golden Compass”, “Legends of the Guardians” and “Where the Wild Things Are”.

“Every school holidays we offer affordable tickets ($8) and kids under three can come along for free,” she says.

“Not only are our prices affordable but our venue is historic and attractive to help keep people entertained.”

LEADING LAWYERS ‘Biased’ process threatens everyone’s compensation rights, says lawyer PEOPLE’s rights are in jeopardy, says Maliganis Edwards Johnson’s partner James Treloar, following the ACT government announcement to refer the issue of compensation claims to a citizens’ jury.

“The ACT government has announced it is establishing a jury to lead a ‘review’ into the rights of Canberrans to claim compensation for injuries they sustain in a motor accident,” James says.

“I’m concerned this biased and secretive process has been designed to strip away the rights of Canberrans unnecessarily.”

James says the current Compulsory Third Party regime in Canberra already benefits all road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists and passengers, not just drivers of vehicles.

“It is those Canberrans who are most at risk under the changes favoured by the government,” he says.

James wants people to ask themselves, why should they be short-changed when injured in an accident that isn’t their fault?

“Why should my family’s livelihood be put at risk when I have suffered injury or loss due to another driver’s negligence, including the drunk, careless or drug-affected driver?” James says.

“I invite all Canberrans to voice their concerns on the government’s proposed attack on your rights.

“It is important that your voice be heard, by the politicians and by the citizens’ ‘jury’.”

Spring brings a new tipple Richard Calver

Liz dives in with a joyous message of hope

“LET’S care about what’s happening under the sea and how that affects you and me – oh, that rhymes,” says happy Canberra choreographer Liz Lea of her coming show, “Reef UP!” “CityNews” catches up with Lea by phone to the Brisbane Powerhouse, where she’s starting rehearsals with fellow dancers Michael Smith and Liesel Zink on the new show, which will have its world premiere in Canberra early next month.

The production will then tour to 35 schools in regional Queensland in a venture co-commissioned by the Queensland Music Festival and the Canberra Theatre Centre.

It’s set to be a joyous production and though it deals with a serious subject, the Great Barrier Reef, in Canberra it will be aimed at very little people. We’ll be getting a neon-lit, “underwater” disco dance, the sort of thing you can’t really do in schools.

Combining science and dance has become something of a specialty for Lea. Trained in classical ballet and the equally demanding Indian tradition of Bharatanatyam, Lea’s leap into science only began in 2013 when the then director of the CSIRO Discovery Centre, Cris Kennedy, invited her to become choreographer-in-residence there.

Armed with advice from former theatre director Robert Bunzli, then working at Questacon, she headed to the National Library and the National Film and Sound Archive to research the science of flight.

When Kennedy offered her the use of the theatre at CSIRO Discovery for National Science Week, the DANscienCE Festival was born, with the highlight a production featuring indigenous dancer Tammi Gissell of

The event has since seen a second edition in Brisbane where Lea worked with psychologist, Prof Gene Moyle and the next will be in April in Parramatta, where she’ll be working with FORM dance project and the Riverside Theatres.

In between she has choreographed kids’ shows such as “Flying Facts”, a show about the history and science of flight, and “Star Struck”, a dance response to astronomy and the science of the Big Bang, as well as doing dance and science research.

When she was a young dancer, Lea had no idea she’d end up getting so deep into science.

“The level of research I’m involved with really appeals to me… I get to touch upon different projects and meet incredible scientists – it’s a great honour,” she says. Her scientific collaborators on “Reef UP!” include people recently featured on David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef documentary.

But when it comes to “Reef UP!” it’s time for enjoyment.

“But there’s a joyous message – what we can do about it.”

That’s where the fun part comes in, for while during the schools tour in Queensland educational material will be circulated, here in the Canberra premiere, there’ll be bright costumes and happy pop music to please little audience members.

Living with the oddities of a new life

SHAUN Tan is one of that rare breed of artist who is equally adept at telling stories in words and pictures, but a production adapted from his book “The Arrival” has no words at all.

by Lee Buddle, young audiences during the ACT school holidays will be invited into the shoes of middle-aged immigrant Aki, who leaves his wife and child to seek better prospects, finding himself on the other side of an ocean in a place not unlike the Perth of Tan’s birth, with odd customs, odder animals and weird objects.

He survives through the kindness of strangers, as so many before him have done.

It’s a timely show, dealing as it does with what a migrant faces, a perennial issue.

In writing his novel, Tan drew on stories from his dad, who migrated from Malaysia in the early ‘60s and never stopped complaining about “the unpalatable food, too cold or too hot weather, amusing misunderstandings, difficult isolation, odd student jobs and so on”.

And, as a half-Chinese boy, he was constantly being asked: “Where are you from?”

A DECADE ago, a notebook compiled during the last 15 years of Queen Victoria’s reign again saw the light of day.

Indian journalist Shrabani Basu used it as the foundation for a 2011 book subtitled “The True Story of the Queen’s Closest Confidant”. Lee Hall drew on Basu’s book for the screenplay of director Stephen Frears’ film.

“Victoria and Abdul” is new history, previously suppressed by Victoria’s successor Edward VII (Eddie Izzard playing Prince Albert with vitriolic intensity) and the palace establishment.

Its tangled origin leads to a felicitous outcome for filmgoers with predilections for historical drama.

Reflecting an era when tradition was choking the Royal household, Frears’ film may well equally please and dismay Australia’s monarchist and republican supporters. Tradition’s panoply gets a royal serve faithfully staged, hilarious in its profligacies. The political infighting at court is often furious. And above it all stands the dumpy figure of the “Widow of Windsor”, bored, unhappy, devoted to her duties both household and public, no matter how punctilious and meaningless their form.

Boring? Not for an instant. Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal) came to England by default, charged with delivering a rajah’s gift to the Queen, an Indian coin, small potatoes compared with the Koh-I-Noor diamond that she often wore as a brooch. Abdul’s sole qualification was his physical height. His day job was recording new arrivals at Agra prison.

Much of the film depicts the growth of a close, platonic friendship between the Queen and Abdul, whom she styled her “munshi” or teacher when she decided to learn “the” Indian language. And this brings us to a great moment in cinema history.

For Judi Dench playing Victoria, the only adequate word is “sublime”. Would any other octogenarian actress allow close-ups faithfully recording every line, wrinkle, blotch and stray hair, and deliver complex dialogue with such vigour and conviction?

A peerless portrayal.

FOR this multi-award-winning documentary, Haiti-born Raoul Peck drew on the 30 pages of “Remember This House” that James Baldwin actually finished writing before his death.

And it’s a 94-minute cracker of a movie, crammed with social history depicted in media of every kind created by whites who thought their view of racial issues in the US was sympathetic toward the non-white population.

Built out of archival footage in every medium – movies, newspaper reports, TV and radio series, print and electronic media advertising – and narrated by actor Samuel L Jackson, it resurrects three black activists who each died from an assassin’s bullet – Malcolm X, Medgar Evers and Martin Luther King.

A shocker constructed around talking heads, most notably that of Evers delivering not oratory but a black man’s informed explanation of the real attitudes of black people, interspersed with the archival material, the result may be selective but its effectiveness is unarguable.

While things may have apparently changed in the half-century since the three men’s deaths, underlying issues still fester.

Many of the main icons of the civil rights conflict are absent from the film. Visual images of “Strange Fruit” take the place of Billie Holiday’s recording of Abel Meeropol’s tragic song. Clips from movies demonstrate the shallowness of Hollywood’s treatment in films directed by famous white directors. Black filmmakers aren’t represented because in the 1960s there were none. The list goes on.

Documentaries aren’t generally regarded as front-line cinema entertainment. This one breaks that rule. Watching it reminded me of the late, wonderful Les Blank whose docos were at the forefront of that rule-breaking. I think he’d have found much to praise here.

IN a return to independent filmmaking, writer/ director Darren Aronofsky asks his audience to discover its own explanation for what he’s trying to say.

In a dilapidated house in the middle of a field, writer (poetry? fiction?)

He (Javier Bardem) is trying to discover the muse that has deserted him. She (Jennifer Lawrence) Jennifer Lawrence as She is testing colour in “mother!” schemes for the renovation for which the house is crying out.

Man (Ed Harris) knocks on the door. He’s an orthopaedic surgeon with cancer. Can He and She give him a bed? She’s doubtful. He welcomes the diversion of a stranger in their midst. Next day Woman (Michelle Pfeiffer) arrives to join her husband. Man and Woman begin to take over the house. Their two sons arrive. Woman asks She why she has no children. She says it’s because He isn’t giving her any. He gives her one. He finds his muse.

Celebrity-seekers take over the house. Chaos develops. She delivers a son. The revellers begin to wreck the building, which shows no signs of any renovation. Things get worse.

Running for two hours, the dialogue in ”mother!” frequently goes one way while the images go in another, generating a growing sense of Aronofsky scrabbling around searching for a metaphor that he’s trying to justify. And not succeeding.

Playing She, Jennifer Lawrence deploys screamqueen skills more impressive than the piece deserves. But Aronofsky’s quest for a horror story comes up empty, not horrifying, just horribly unsatisfying.

Sharing a tasty secret TUCKED away in the heart of Manuka Village is a secret garden that is a very special spot indeed.

When I first heard Secret Garden was opening I crossed my fingers and toes that it wouldn’t just take over the existing space configuration, with its tired-looking colour scheme and old-fashioned seating.

The space has been home to many eateries over the years, including Paysan Bakery (many moons ago), Francisco’s Mexican and Peppermint Cafe.

The Secret Garden was smart enough to know that a transformation was badly needed and now the area is modern, more spacious and more inviting with its perky yellow chairs, communal and individual wooden tables and greenery that thrives happily in the light-filled atrium.

Highly experienced hospitality veteran, Jack Zhong, co-owns Secret Garden (and the well-established and amazing Wild Duck at the Foreshore). With Bill Wu, Jack has also transformed the food offering and so off to lunch we went.

Poke bowls seem to be all the rage these days. I adore them (at least a good one) and Secret Garden’s salmon variety didn’t disappoint ($22 and gluten free).

Sitting pretty on the rice cake was smashed avo, tomato, eschallots and baby capers. On top of that was a generous serve of cured salmon with a bit of crispy salmon skin delicately balanced and adding lovely crunch. What a wonderful combo of textures and flavours. And the dish was also a feast for the eyes.

My friend ordered the fish and chips, inspired by the promise of smoky kale batter ($22). The three pieces of fish were served with a fresh garden salad, preserved lemon and creamy tartare sauce made in house. The batter was light and the fish beautifully moist.

peas, avo, spinach, pearl barley, quinoa and a soft-boiled egg ($19).

Big tick for being healthy.

During our visit, lunch specials included a rice congee ($16), pork boa ($18) and a pork katsu burger ($18). If you prefer, you can have a good old steak burger and chips or a chicken bacon deluxe roll with chips (both $22).

Spring brings a new tipple SPRING has arrived. It is teasing us with tickles of warmth and blue sky.

And then the clear skies leave Canberra bitter overnight. The season gives with one hand, takes with the other. The trees are carrying lovely blossoms and the sap is rising (when he’s not writing a wine column).

In Canberra’s wineries, the level of activity is also rising.

I spoke with Fergus McGhie from Mount Majura Vineyard about the tasks they are undertaking. He said they are bottling the 2017 riesling and pinot gris, as these varieties don’t spend any time on oak. They are blending their chardonnay and “looking at barrels” for this variety. They are examining (tirage) the Silurian that is barrel fermented and also in stainless steel. This is the Mount Majura sparkling wine that takes its name from the geological period (430 million years ago) that provided the limestone and volcanic rock that has now produced the soils so suitable for growing grape vines.

Spring is the time for repairs and maintenance so there is an air of heightened activity. There is also grafting of riesling to pinot gris stock because there is such a high demand for their riesling. Out with the old, in with the new: especially if the old isn’t selling as well.

The vines are making buds, a process that starts as soon as the green shoots emerge in spring. The bare look of the vineyards changes in September and the new shoots bring the hope of a bountiful crop.

Spring brings the promise of new beginnings that signal renewal. There is also a change in my drink of choice, a new beginning of appreciation. In my risotto, I pour sauvignon blanc. It is particularly efficacious in pork and fennel risotto where the acid cuts down

the fatty pork flavour. And this time the savvie is worthwhile drinking on its own. K1 by Geoff Hardy is a 2017 sauvignon blanc. Geoff planted the first commercial planting of vines in the Kuitpo region in the southern Adelaide Hills in 1987 and named it K1. Since then, the K1 website says, Geoff has been involved in the planting of more than 3000 hectares of vines and has consulted to more than 200 different vineyards in Australia, France and Italy.

The K1 sauvignon blanc is extraordinary and intense.

The flavours of lemon and passionfruit stand out and the wine has a very clean finish. It is the sort of wine I can see you would put in a bucket of ice and sit where the sun is shining, just absorbing the much-needed warmth we seem to have been denied endlessly. Trouble is with the way the weather is producing pockets of warmth in the sun and cold in the shade you would be chasing the sun to keep up the illusion. Perhaps spring has both inveigled and disappointed? Perhaps there is too much store in new beginnings?

To clarify a few expressions of gardening jargon: •A nnuals are planted for flowering during one season only. Typical annuals include pansies and violas, which will come to the end of their peak winter flowering period sometime in October. As we go into spring and summer, petunias are the great favourite, lasting into autumn. Punnets of petunias will appear in garden centres any time now.

• Then there are the champions of any garden, the perennials, which can be planted almost any time and will last in most gardens for years.

PERENNIALS have the added advantage of being propagated in ways to give extra plants at no cost.

Once flowering has finished seeds can be gathered by placing a brown paper bag over the flower head just before it dies down and secure it around the stalk. It’s a good idea to use a waterproof Texta pen to write the name on the bag. Don’t use a plastic bag as this will sweat and send the seeds mouldy. Shake the bag occasionally and if the seeds have separated from the flower head it will rattle.

Cuttings can be taken from many perennial plants, but the quickest way to have extra plants is by digging up and dividing the roots.

Lightly trim any scraggy roots and pot up in a premium-grade potting mix. In a few months the roots will be sufficiently established

One important point is to continually dead head the plants to encourage more flowers.

ENGLISH gardening magazines often feature pictures of magnificent flowering borders and one may wonder how such gardening masterpieces are created.

The answer is by mainly using perennials, which are selected for their size to provide colour almost all the year round. The high plants at the back of the border graduating to low or even ground cover plants at the front.

While many varieties of perennials seen in overseas magazines are not available here, there is still a wide range of local perennials from which to choose.

The Victorian wholesale nursery Plant Growers Australia’s current catalogue lists more than 300 varieties of perennial plants all grown in a similar climate to Canberra.

• For existing perennials in your garden, it’s not too late to dig and divide for either potting up or filling gaps.
